I'm a game designer student in a Brazilian university. In my class I'm the only one who likes code and made the secure choice to be a future game programmer.

But recently some dudes on my class started to discourage me and telling me to give up that course and change to a computer science course.

I didn't feel that way... I think game programmers who know all the stuff and process of game development( modelling, concepts etc) are better professionals than the ones who just knows the scripting process. But sometimes their opinion flows up my head and I feel so unknown if I staying in the right way or not.

(Sry if my english still bad..hope you all understand anyway)

    @Null-Device yes I'm not so much of conventional software or app development..unless if it be part of the learning process

    @Null-Device knowledge is not bad. You can be a game developer being a CS student, but you can't be a CS engineer being a game developer.

    @Null-Device I don't regret my 12+4+2 years of education. My problem solving methods has diversity.

    @Null-Device who said you can't purse self learning with your proper graduation? When we get into the company our salaries and promotions depends on our education qualification apart from our performance.

    @Null-Device 😂
    Agree with you. Thanks for the enlightenment.

    @ExcellentSP some companies have requirements based on our educational qualification for the promotions

    I think I'm gonna continue in my actual course. Like I said, a more detailed and focused area at all sectors (3D, design, script, plot) will help me for a more complete professional in the gamedev area, even when I want to focus on the tech way. Imagine if some 3D guy or concept have trouble in ideas. Then, the programmer as anyone in a gamedev team can support it.

    Besides that, everyone in my class hates code as I hate design and concept. So I think I can be a light in the dark for them and get my own respect not being an useless student.

    I thank everyone who joins this post taking your time to comment on it and help my decision.

    I got confused in the part in which you mentioned that game devs thst learn everything in their area are better than the oned that just know the scripting process. Is that a comparison between CS?

    For the record. If your passion is im game dev and that is what you want to do then fuck everyone else and do what makes you happy. At the end of the day the only person that is going to be responsible for your career happiness is you.

    @rookiemaverick I like the two ones even I don't know so much C# and C++ yet. Both are great for every kind of possibility and I don't understand why people turns to hate one or another.

    @rookiemaverick in a cs engineer with a game development background. It helped me a ton.
