Hey everyone! As many of you have already seen, @trogus and I are happy to announce the release of devRant++, also know as the devRant supporter program!

devRant++ is a monthly subscription ($1.99 USD) that gives you some cool extra features while also contributing to covering some of our ever-increasing server costs.

Subscribers get:
- a badge that shows up on all of their rants and comments
- ability to edit rants and comments for up to 30 minutes (instead of the usual 5)
- ability to post unlimited collabs for free (so keep an eye out for new collabs, hopefully!)
- a reserved spot on the devRant++ supporter list (you can only move up higher or stay in the same position through the life of your subscription)
- more benefits coming soon!

Why did devRant++ come to be? Basically, we have the most awesome community members and we kept getting extremely generous requests from members asking how they could help devRant stay afloat. Instead of taking donations and not giving anything directly in return, we wanted to give supporters a little extra something to hopefully make the program kind of special.

We greatly appreciate everyone who has joined the supporter program so far. We also realize not everyone has the money to spend or wants to spend, and that's perfectly fine. We also greatly appreciate everyone here who posts great rants and comments, helps spread the word about devRant, votes on stuff, or is just a valuable member of the community in general. @trogus and I value all contributions and we want to make that clear!

Another reason we decided to go ahead with the program is, as I mentioned towards the beginning, our server/technology costs are increasing and we're kind of at a point where we can't afford all of the upgrades we'd like to make. At the same time while we need more hardware, we're trying to get the app to a place where we're not losing money every month, hopefully to the point where we can break even soon.

Anyway, thank you to everyone again for the amazing support and early interest in devRant++. We would love to hear feedback and stuff you would like to see added to supporter benefits, so just let us know!

    Nice!
    I'll definitely go and buy a playstore card for this!

    A dollar a day keeps the servers awake (:
  • 11
    It would be awesome to have special avatar items for the supporters!
  • 10
    @dfox take my 2 dollars anytime! Found internet in Venice just so I could get on the ++ hype train, keep up the awesome work!
  • 16
    @Skayo thanks!

    @dzil123 thank you! And yes, gifting subscriptions and maybe avatar items too is definitely in the plans. There's no exact timeframe - I think we want to get back to finishing a few usability features before that but will hopefully be soon!

    @d3xt0r unfortunately we need a number of dollars a day to keep the severed awake :)

    @Skayo good idea and something we're thinking about. Feel free to suggest items you think would fit well with the program.

    @jschmold thank you!! We really appreciate that.

    @diadev haha, thanks so much!

    Verry nice idea! I wa very sceptical about having to pay money for devRant, but the advantages are only se much, that you dount have to buy devRant++. Stay codin :)
  • 16
    @linuxer4fun thanks, and definitely - we will never charge for the fore devRant experience. We want to make sure devRant++ is premium for special features not core to the basic devRant experience. That's one of the reasons we'd like to here some more ideas of what some of that stuff might be (add-on features). We have a lot of ideas, but curious what everyone else thinks :)
  • 6
    @dfox you could add a feature like "watch three ads in order to get it for one day" this vay, people who really want devrant++ can get it without paying.

    Or, you can allow multiple rants in 1h.like 5/h
  • 6
    Even if it was just for support and not the features, I'd be glad to support my online family. 😁

    ( as soon as you fix ios payment. I know apple support delay sucks 😛)
  • 14
    @dfox and @trogus, just tell me if you want any help. I can sponsor with servers (both VPS and physical machines, even IF they are a couple of years old).
  • 10
    @linuxer4fun hell no!
  • 5
    I know a lot of people disagreed with me previously, I still think collabs should cost $1.99. People would actually buy collab more if it's not that expensive.
  • 10
    @jschmold could be interesting

    @linuxer4fun increased post rate could be good

    @tarstrong do you have any other details? I assume the Google Play store works OK for you and you're signed in and everything?

    @mcraz thank you! Yeah, fucking Apple. I'm really upset this happened. Mostly their fault but I also could have checked. I just thought it was guaranteed that if the build was approved, then that also meant the IAP's were also approved. Apparently not :/

    @Linux thanks for the offer! Can we deploy you? :) Right now all of our main stuff is hosted on DigitalOcean and the single biggest reason we haven't moved elsewhere to cut costs is because DigitalOcean reliability has been by far the best of any of the hosts we've used. At our size, we can't have a lot of redundancy, so the reliability of each server is very important. I will let you know though if we decide to investigate physical machines (I have considered) or anything else. We appreciate the offer.

    So, I want to support you guys, but the google play dialog opens, fixated on the first email in alphabetical order and so i can't switch to my email with the banking options. Could you gix this, so that I'm litterally able to support you guys?

    (Sorry, I know that API is a pain in the but)

    Question - what exactly do the colors represent?
  • 8
    subscribed yesterday. thanks for making devRant!

    @AngryDev the background color from your avatar
  • 6
    @thoxx well that makes sense and now that you say it I feel stupid for not noticing lol 😅
  • 5
    I want to participate, but I am kinda broke:/
  • 4
    But I started working on Fiverr, so hopefully something rolls in. If it does, you know where it will end:D
  • 6
    @dfox a mate of me and I are starting an hosting company with good prices competitive with digital ocean. Maybe I can get him to make deals for Devrant members as an gift to this awesome community
  • 5
  • 4
    Great idea. I already subscribed yesterday as 2$ isn't much money and helps you guys out to keep this place going.
  • 5
    One of the reasons why I love this app: The developers are not jackasses. You could've easily limited the basic devrant to make it hardly usable for the people who don't pay the premium service, but you didn't. You guys are awesome, and that's why I'll subscribe to the service.

    Keep up the good job
  • 3
    @dfox if you're looking for physical server, I'd totally recommend Nocix, based in US https://www.nocix.net/

    Or if you want a server in Europe, you can look at Scaleway (tiny dedicated servers) https://www.scaleway.com/

    Or a larger server (performance and physical size) take a look at Hetzner https://www.hetzner.de/ (use their Server Auction for cheaper servers)
  • 10
    Can I buy 10 subscriptions to be allowed to edit my posts 300 minutes after I publish them?
  • 4
    @dfox thanks for doing this. Any plans to become transparent with what the costs actually are? The more the community knows, the more support you'd receive.

    Also, a few thoughts:

    - I'd pay more for devRant++ if it gave me a store discount. You would need to keep adding store items to make this work. Laptop covers, pens, notebooks, fidget items, coffee cups, etc. are all things devs use on a daily basis

    - Why no kickstarter? You're scaling, and need funds to do so. Reward levels wouldn't be difficult to come up with. When you do this, a product hunt would significantly boost campaign visibility

    - Lift the rant limit for supporters. I understand the limit does a lot to keep costs down, but supporters are likely to hold the same values as founders (quality content, no reposts, etc.) so it doesn't make sense to restrict them. Make another (higher) devRant++ tier if you really need to, just make it possible for this to be attained by a user
  • 2
    - Increase the comment character limit for devRant++ supporters. I had to post this in multiple comments and it's relevant, quality discussion contribution

    - No job postings yet? Still working on this? I think collabs are cool and all, but you'd make money with job postings. Devs have things that need done, too. I have 2 jobs right now that I'd pay to be able to post in some dedicated place besides the rant or collab wall. If you do this, include some type of bi-directional rating system. Can elaborate if necessary

    - Lastly, I'd like to donate more than a couple dollars a month. This would be awesome if, in exchange, I could contribute to the direction of devRant, and it would probably alleviate some real financial stress. Let me know when something like this is available
  • 3
    Oh, @trogus can you be a hero and make more skin tones for avatars? The one I have chosen is too dark, and the next lighter one isn't the right color. Picky request, so I'll gladly pay for it. I hate my avatar and have been waiting patiently forever for this.

    Thanks again and good luck guys, devRant++ is a great step in an awesome direction. Glad to be a supporter.

    @dfox I was thinking a live chat lobby and a few sub-rooms by category (Python, supporter room, etc). It could be entirely socket-based and not rely on server storage to save server resources. Very attractive quality for what could be a very small investment!

    Supporter room could be attractive because maybe the global room would be too crowded eventually during active hours
  • 4
    Just to be clear: text-based live chat
  • 3
    @darkcode ooooow yesss I need one too that is just a tad darker than what I have right now
  • 2
    @dzil123 That's sadly not the causem this is the second app where I can't support the creators because of this.
    @dfox
    Tfw when you wan't to give support, but literally can't 😳
  • 3
    @dfox
    You can have redundancy on VPS servers too :)
    I can always give you advices if you want or answer your questions :)
  • 6
    @darkcode skin tones are straightforward, I can add some more variety no problem
  • 2
    @trogus hero mode activated. Thank you!

    Thank you to everyone who has subscribed the last few days!! I'd love to thank everyone individually but I don't want to clog up this thread. We really appreciate it and love knowing that many are enjoying devRant.

    We have a bunch of cool things in the pipeline for the entire community and devRant++. Within the next few days, devRant++ subscribers will be able to post rants every hour and post comments up to 2,000 characters.

    @Awlex I will look into that, thanks for trying and sorry about that.

    @thoxx thanks!

    @inpothet thanks for the offer. We can definitely take a look when you're up and running!

    @ocab19 thanks, we appreciate the kind words!

    @ChainsawBaby thanks for the suggestions, I will check them out!
  • 4
    @darkcode thank you for the awesome list of well-thought-out suggestions. As you'll see above, we're implementing some already :) Kickstarter and donate are a possibility, we will look into more. The idea about store discount is a great idea. There's probably something we can do there. Job listings is also something we've thought about!

    @AlgoRythm @trogus really wants to do a live chat feature

    @Linux can definitely have redundancy, but I'm not sure how cost would work relative to the small instances we use for some redundancy now. I will reach out to you though if we decide to switch. One reason we've stuck with expensive DO is because with my full-time job it helps not having to deal with server emergencies during the day. We had some bad issues with some other hosts in that respect so reliability is one of our main concerns. But maybe I will make another rant about this to get some more infrastructure feedback, I appreciate the ideas!
  • 3
    @oxkipo thanks for the suggestion. We would want our servers on the U.S. though.

    @jordinebot thanks, glad you're enjoying!

    @AngryDev I really hope tomorrow. It's ridiculous how long it is taking Apple to approve it but if not tomorrow I'm going to call them and I'll be very angry. Might even record that call lol.

    @dfox I'm slapping my mate around for pricing but got the notice that all server will get custom priced so I am now slapping him around for a website

    @dfox When you do end up calling them please do record the call and post it somewhere ^_^

    Been part of this community from almost the start. I come and go due to time consuming projects. Love seeing how this place has grown over year. But seriously I'm ANGRY that u amazing developer isn't cashing in. U deserve retirement bro. So I'm now ranting WHY only $2 I want a more premium offer to put u in RETIREMENT on a luxury boat sailing into the sunset!!!!
  • 2
    @dfox
    Hi, I just wanted to tell you from my side, DigitalOcean is much pricey for such case (And ofc you know your situation and its dependencies much more than me).
    But i would recommend an awesome alternative of dedicated servers from online.net, they have the cheapest and best performance, I've been since 5 years with them and built huge racks there with the lowest down time i ever saw and just 1 of my server went down once and they called me to apologize and they fixed it in an hour, and awesome support staff too, only 1 downside is that their servers are in France/Netherlands only, and sure if you also CDN (Cloudflare) you can cut much more costs, that was my 2'cents as I'm in the same bout hosting 3 big data and high traffic apps.
  • 1
    @dfox been trying for days now to sign up...keep getting a server error
  • 3
    @ragnarr023 thanks, we really appreciate that!

    @DataWrecker haha, thank you. I think trying to cover expenses is a good first step :) We have other ideas to being in more money, but we wanted to make sure we charged an affordable price for now so people who want to help out could.

    @DonMcCoy thanks, will check them out!

    @Treighton sorry about that :/ I'm still not sure why that's happening, but it seems to be on the Google end. It was solved in this thread: https://devrant.io/rants/639842/...

    devRant++ is now working on iOS! If anyone tries it and runs into any issues just let me know, thanks!

    And once again, huge apologies for the delay.
  • 1
    Hear hear, well said @dfox we appreciate all you guys do too! You've put in some awesome work to create an awesome program vicariously through an awesome tool. Long live the rant!

    This is true, I read something similar on HostNOC's blog.
