There's a lot of buzz floating around about women finding tech very discouraging. Generally the specifics I found were talking down, feeling threatened (for being the only female in the room), etc.

So, my question. How accurate is this buzz? Is it actually a big deal?

Redoing this question because @Codex404 made a solid point.

    Tagging you because I reconsidered my objective and realized you made a point. Observation is observation

    Is there any stuff that women are not being discouraged about ? Also be it any feild,we find the toxic assholes every where!!!
    And all the commentary is bullshit. what is this about ? Being a labour on a construction site or something ? That you aren't gonna take the women seriously ? No actual basis on which we can be discriminated against.
    Just gotta learn how to dodge the bullshit 🤩
    As a student I'd say " ok,I've finished two years of engineering and ain't nobody's toxic ass going to discourage me from doing what I am doing. "
    Tbh I think IT is one feild where women are being encouraged a lot.
    Also the wage gap in this field is not as much as in other fields, and I believe it'll diminish soon. I don't find a reason why programming is discouraging.

    @ceee
    I am curious about your first sentence. Do you have any examples off the top of your head?
  • 4
    @ceee you will find "toxic" assholes or just assholes anywhere you go regardless of your gender, I've yet to find someone who tells me he/she is 100% comfy in their job and never bothered.

    People point out no one is complaining about representation in construction, sewage, plumbing, mining, welding, etc, because they are low earning high risk jobs in which 90%+ of the workforce are male (toxic masculinity?).

    I agree if you want to do something do it and don't mind what other people think, that's what successful people do.

    @ceee sound like the same shit everybody deals with, toxic assholes are assholes to everyone, but I agree toxic + gender biased is even worse.

    I think the main difference is men are told to though it up, but that is changing too.. so now we get proper wining from everyone.

    I believe in fixing issues, but generalizing, wining and complaining to the air will not do.

    Using the law and processes is always the way to go.

    @JKyll @mundo03 yeah toxic assholes are a general thing. And women discourage women just as much a man can.

    @jschmold in my country, a lot women are discouraged from doing *any sort of work*. Shits changing, but I've seen highly educated women,sitting at home doing chores and not working , because they are being discouraged or forced not to.

    @ceee what country are we talking about?
  • 3
    @JKyll
    India

    @ceee
    Yeah, it's a common trait across a significant portion of the middle east. Can't say I'm a fan
  • 2
    @jschmold middle eastern cultures tend to be sexist. @ceee As I've told other Indians you should seek to move to a country you wish to adapt to, one you appreciate their culture and fits your growth and freedom standards if yours doesn't.

    @JKyll not a bad option, maybe. Or we cd stay here and try to make things change for better.
  • 2
    @ceee wouldn't Rob you of your choice to, after all I believe an individual holds free will to do as they see fit.
  • 2
    It's definitely something I honestly thought I would ever have to deal with, bc society seemed to be chilling out on the sexism when I started my CS degree. Many years into the field now and it's rampant! It's not just CS women either. Any woman who wishes to make their opinions known is taken as bitchy. I could take an IM conversation where a man was talking down to me, and the CEO would say it was fine. If I switch the names where I was saying the things to the guy and showed it to him, I'd get reprimanded as having an attitude. It's a battle that I'm so damn tired of fighting. I just want to fucking do my job and go the fuck home.

    I cant speak for the rest of the world, but here in my CS Engg class, the girls don't really care about tech and certainly not about d CSE subjects they've taken. To be fair most boys are alike. When i say most, I mean that outta 40 boys I can point out max 3 who might amount to something cuz they have interest in these things.
    I think incompetency comes into picture here. A large number of people are fkin incompetent.

    @yatanvesh yeah what you are pointing out ,isn't gender based. I have an all women class at max 20-30 /60 people give actual fuck about the study. This count will probably be the same for any class regardless of the sex ratio.

    Wow this rant I stumbled upon.

    @ceee That's actually the rant that sparked the question

    @C6583S
    That's rather alarming. I get excited when I see women go into tech because it's no common. Hell, have you seen @Root 's logging? Better than anything I've ever done.

    @ceee
    Well, here's a question that will come across offensive, but I mean it with genuine curiosity.

    Why does this happen? Is there something that was or is trending that causes women to not be taken seriously as often? Is there a form of behavior that's common? Is there a common trait among the men, such as exposure to women, intellect, insecurity, etc? Is there a social divide in general mentality?

    And thanks @jschmold 😊

    In my experience so far, at each new job, colleagues and even some managers were obviously very skeptical of my skills or what I had to offer. After a while, it would blow over, and they’d have faith in my abilities. That’s without me trying to force it, like proving myself. As projects come and go, I just do them like anyone else. I suppose I’ve had it easy in that regard. The hardest part was trying to find spots that would “take the chance” on me to begin with.
