WTF ?
Compiling kernel on HDD: 3.34 minutes.
Compiling on SSD: 4.25 minutes.

Am i blind or it takes actually longer ?

WTF ????????????
This is fucking M.2 SSD.
And that HDD is 5400RPM. IDK what the fuck is happening but this is fucking weird.

    You have broken logic 🤔
  • 8
    What have you done!?!??! 😂🤷🏻‍♂️
  • 12
Depends on whether the hard drive is the bottleneck... If not than this must be arbitrariness
  • 4
@wholl0p The HDD is the bottleneck for compiling. But when i try on SSD it slower in time LOL
  • 5
@Stuxnet NOTHING. IDK wtf is wrong with it. But this is fucking crazy
  • 7
@Haxk20 what tells you that the hard drive is the bottleneck?
  • 5
@wholl0p Because when done in ramdisk its much much faster. Like i get 2 minutes
  • 3
But even if HDD wasnt the bottleneck i should still see a great improvment in time over HDD.
  • 5
@wholl0p Sorry my mistake ramdisk is 3.49 minutes. But now this becomes ridicilus. HDD faster then fucking RAM ?
  • 10
All you've really proven is file IO isn't the reason for slow builds
  • 3
@njpugh90 Yeah i fucking see that but why the fuck is still HDD fucking faster ? Even if File IO isnt the issue then i should get the same time. But i fucking dont.
  • 8
    Are you Gordon Ramsay? Jesus.
  • 1
@JohnDoesNot No. Not as far as i know. Or am i ????????????? No im not LOL
  • 3
Fuck it i will compile on HDD and done. Even after that i have more space on HDD
  • 3
    This is illegal.
  • 1
    @Haxk20 what that's weird...
I compile Linux kernel on nvme 3 to 4 times faster than on my hdd...
  • 1
@git-fuckyou Yeah thats whats weird to me. It doesnt make any fucking sense to me at all. Even ramdisk is slow. I think that its compiling something else because the end of compilation looks totally different. But the kernel still works. But when compiling x86 kernel for my machine it seems faster on SSD. Its most likely just something wrong set or IDK. But the system is blazing fast with SSD. But this is some weird SSD indeed because i had some issues with it. Will switch to samsung SSD when i get the money.
  • 3
@Haxk20 when I compile on ramdisk it's even faster... Buuut, not when you make the ramdisk to big, ran out of ram and then swap out, that makes it even worse.
  • 5
What kind of SSD? Also how full is that SSD? There needs to be room for caching stuff on there - also the ssd might get slow when getting full.
  • 3
More import than the disk speed is your io buffers capacity. If everything fits into the ram, it's irrelevant which is faster. Have you checked actual IO load, did a clear sync and dropped caches before measuring the process?
  • 1
Hmmmm yeah its possible that its on ram all the time. Ram isnt full.
  • 1
    @fml89 120gb/250gb
  • 5
Are you sure that you've eliminated all other factors? Like background processes, kernel version etc. Seems weird to me that a hard drive with all its seek times (kind of an issue when dealing with lots of small files) would be faster. I reckon that perhaps something else was taking up e.g. CPU time during the SSD build.
  • 3
Another thing besides making sure the buffers are empty: "make mrproper"
Your measurement only counts if you really do the same work each time.
Backup your .config before doing this!
  • 2
@JohnDoesNot He swears in every single rant. Choleric
  • 1
@wholl0p You know thats kind of my own thing that i swear in each rant. If you had to port android to 2012 device then trust me you will swear a lot too.
  • 2
@Condor Well i didnt do make mrproper. I did make clean only. Maybe there is the issue. Will try with make mrproper. but i have to fix display on android pie because for some fucking reason its not using hwc2on1 even when i tell it to do so.
  • 1
@wholl0p Also i kind of didnt read that choleric part before. How the fuck you even dare to say that to me ? You know me from devRant. Where i express my anger at tech stuff. Thats what its about. Its the purpuse of devRant. And im not choleric. I just have bad days and good days as every other person. You come here get some ++ and just talk shit about somebody. Oh and read AlexDeLarge rants. Maybe you will change your mind after you read those.
  • 2
@Condor And hey look at you. Already ahead of me in ++. Its true i wasnt as active in few weeks as i used to be. But damn good job.
  • 2
@Haxk20 Blablabla. It is even more choleric to nearly explode because I called you a choleric person
  • 3
@Haxk20 Haha, thanks. Rant moar and you'll catch up in no time! 😁
  • 3
@wholl0p Sure Sure but you dont ask why i swear in each rant. @Condor could you join and tell him how it goes when porting android ? Condor Tried to compile just boot image and well it wasnt easy. Thats not even telling how hard it is to get old blobs to work with new software. To put that in normal language. Imagine you are running Windows 3.1 and you try to run DOOM 2016 on it. And on top of that on hardware that is from 2012.
  • 2
Now imagine you are doing that everyday. For 2 years now. With some small breaks of course.
  • 3
@Haxk20 seems not easy, I know exactly how it is to run intensive stuff on limited hardware, but it's still called "devRant" and not "fuckingDevSwear" ^^
  • 3
@wholl0p Yeah its not. Now even google decided to drop support for old hardware and now display doesnt work in latest android because of them. Noooooooo why would we leave HWcomposer1 support in when 20% of devices still use it right ?
  • 2
@Haxk20 I feel with you, the worst is possibly that it's not in your hands what Google adds or remove to/from Android...
  • 2
@wholl0p Yeah it not called like that but you know you have to have some person like that in comunnity. Then it woudlnt be fun. And i posted quite nice rants when i had a break from android porting. Without swearing actually. That was half year ago. Yeah i should take a break actually. But first i need to port Pie to that damn device. Ohhhhhhh should really change my dev device already. Its quite old and its not fun to port to it already because of that. The blobs are too old and the device runs latest android just because of hacks around stuff. Its not properly done because if i had done it properly android 20 would be released by then.
  • 1
@Haxk20 Even fetching the Android sources brought my server to its knees once.. and its load of 12 for what was explicitly put in a command-line switch to only use 4 threads.. that got me to curse quite frantically on its own already, so I can't even imagine how infuriating the whole process of porting Android would be. Even if I wasn't an alcoholic already, I'd turn very longingly at my favourite booze like that... I mean just the idea that you have to do hex editing to fix shit in Android.. just, why? Why should you even have to do that?
  • 2
@Condor Because google is fucking terrible to old devices.
  • 2
@Condor But on the bright side im switching to new device in near future. So thats good. No more hacks around things to get it working ohhhh it will feel nice.
  • 2
@Haxk20 Oh, which one are you getting?
  • 2
    @Condor Sony Xperia Z1 compact.

Still will be running my xperia SP as my daily but this will be my development device.
  • 3
@Haxk20 Ooh, I had an Xperia SP too, until a year ago
  • 1
@redpolygon yeah running 9.0 on it
  • 1
    Everything working
  • 3
My point is: swearing in every sentence makes it less powerful. And make you look a bit like the average twelve year old fuckface on Call of Duty.
  • 2
@johndoesnot you got a point. Here take my ++

I got Win7 to boot in 27 seconds on a 5400 RPM drive with 2GB RAM, 1.3GHz dual-core CPU the other day. Sure, it was a reasonably fresh install, but still...
  • 0
@parzi and my arch linux booted up in 7 seconds on SSD.
  • 1
@Haxk20 that's on an SSD. Try getting that under 30 seconds on a 5400RPM drive!
  • 0
@Parzi On clean Arch install ? No problem what so ever.
  • 0
@Parzi But dont expect me right now to actually repartition my HDD just to test this crap. No fucking way ! Im happy that my install is totally stable with all those bleeding edge packages.
  • 1
@Haxk20 did I mention I didn't have more than generic drivers loaded yet?
