Company asked me to write a small tool as a preliminary step in the hiring process.

The thing took me like 5 hours to do and it worked fine.

2 weeks later I get an automated email saying my job application was rejected.

Like wtf they basically robbed me of an evening of work and won't even let me know why it wasn't good enough. They could be using the tool for all I know.

I've actually wondered about the legality of posing actual development problems in the hiring process and not actually hire anyone, but follow what they say to solve the problem... Seems like a dick move.

I can understand automatic rejection mails in large companies, but I can not state how much I hate rejections without a proper reason. Automated or not.
