Haxk20

Haxk20 uses ZRAM.
Not enough money to buy more RAM.
HDD is slow as fuck as swap.
SSD is fast but hell no.
ZRAM is love <3

    Sweet.

Why wouldn't you put Swap on the SSD? After all fast access is what they are made for and with modern SSDs wear is a non-issue.

    *walks in hater*

I didn't know about ZRAM at all, will look into it!

@TobiSGD He might not have lots of spare space on it.

@TobiSGD SSD wear is still terrible at best. I have 150gb left on it still so thats not an issue. Its just really the wear.
  • 1
Wait, you're an Android porter and you've never heard of ZRAM before? 🤔
  • 1
@Condor Last time I've heard of it was when my phone was below 1 GB of RAM. I guess it's not a necessity nowadays.

@Haxk20 Nah, wear isn't an issue anymore. The German magazine c't ran a longtime endurance test of several SSDs back in 2017, and the winner lasted an astonishing 9.1 PetaBytes written to it, with the worst competitor going for "only" 2.2 PetaBytes.
So even in the worst case and with a really high assumption of 1 TeraBytes of writes a day (you would have serious swapping problems) the SSD would still last 2,200 days, more than 6 years.

@TobiSGD How large was the sample?
  • 1
@TobiSGD Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm interesting. Maybe i will add 8Gb swap partition but only maybe. I need my pretty space on my SSD. I have a rule. If you have 250Gb SSd never go below 150Gb. On system data at least.

@gronostaj The had 12 different SSDs with two examples per type. The conclusion can be read here: https://heise.de/newsticker/...

    @TobiSGD That's far from a representative sample.
  • 1
@gronostaj Maybe, but given that across the range of all the SSDs even the worst ones consistently outlast pretty much everything you throw at them, I think it is safe to say: On modern SSDs wear is not an issue anymore.

@gronostaj looks like it's not being used on fajita anymore (obviously, given the oodles of RAM it has)

.. but it is on angler (dark theme, yada yada, I know.. couldn't enable it without having to buy the premium features yet again)

@Haxk20 been using SSD as main drive for heavy Windows use for 2+ years, no issues yet. Windows is pretty heavy on the drive, also given that it didn't have much RAM so was paging all the time.
SSD wear is basically a non-issue now unless you want your SSDs to last for 5+ years.

Time and frustration saved by SSDs is worth more to me than cost of one over 5 years, also I don't keep any major data on the SSD, it's just to accelerate the OS and software, so that works out.

dedicate a 4GB or so USB 2.0 flashdrive entirely as one big swap partition. Cheap, faster than a normal HDD, lasts a while if it's brand new when you first set it up.
  • 1
@Parzi Have you actually tried that? From my experience reliability of flash in in flashdrive is far from reasonable, same with real throughput.

@gronostaj Raspi's been doing that for about 6 months now, still going strong.
