responsive design technically is just playing hide and show using media queries. Nothing fancy about that.

    Actually, most of the time I just resize/move the elements - rarely hide them completely.

    Nope!!!! That is the bootstrap way. And technically that is adaptive not responsive.
    Responsive takes a lot more than that, unless you don't mind double markup and horrible SEO.

    Adaptive is when the ui serves up different elements based on the media query or browser string. Sometimes even a whole different web page.

    Responsive is when it is the same elements that re arrange themselves and stack accordingly.
