We had a guest lecture about computer science and gender equality, and it was exciting to see my male classmates so supportive of drawing more women into our field...They are so tired of taking biology courses just so they can look at pretty girls 😂

    So they’re drawing them into CS to object them to the male gaze? Am I reading right? if so, ironic.

    @dalastTomCruise I think that's why this whole movement is a thing. We don't need equal amounts of boys and girls in certain fields. There's no actual reason other than "it seems like it makes more sense". There's no discrimination in the hiring process, there's no discrimination in schools, there's no issue. Some fields attract males more, some fields attract females more. But I guess those horny 80 year old professors are tired of their wife and want some fresh meat to look at.

    @AlgoRythm

    I don't want to write a whole rant, but basically it comes down to equality of choice != equality of outcome. If people have the option to go into whatever field they want, they will go into the field that interests them most.

    There could also be factors of sexism in the workplace, but with my background I can't really comment on that. @Any women ranters out there, do you face sexism frequently, sometimes, or not at all?

    @RiderExMachina Sexism in the workplace is still very much a thing, and I'm always amused by men like AlgoRythm that claim discrimination does not exist.
    Not only did I face discrimination, my former TL actually tried to put his dirty hands on me. I have heard people say to my face that they throw CVs of women to the trash bin because women cry a lot and don't learn as fast as men. I have so many examples I can out-write LotR.

    @dalastTomCruise This is not the original intent, but the women that organize this "expose-girls-to-tech" campaign get surprising support from horny CS students :)

    @NickyBones

    That's awful. :/

    It's not much, but I'm doing my part where I can.

    @RiderExMachina These men were not the majority. I don't, by no means, hold all men responsible for the deeds of a few scumbags.
    I worked with good men who supported me through those horrible incidents.
    Most of the time, it's the subtle sexism. It very hard to notice when it's not aimed at you, but when you know what to look for, you cannot miss it...in this case, it is very nice to get support from men who don't think my opinion is less important because I have a vagina.

    @NickyBones Its my fault, my comment is poorly written and easily misinterpreted. Just place an "If" before that sentence.

    @NickyBones [Genuine question] Do you think that it would be supportive/beneficial to have dudes at women in tech events kinda in solidarity? Or do you think it would do more harm than good? I've gotten mixed responses on this...

    @arcsector It depends to which crowd it is intended. In the very first phase, where girls "meet" tech for the first time, and are still kind of afraid of it, and afraid of looking stupid, then having boys around them that can potentially make fun of them is not beneficial.
    But as a more mature and confident career woman, I don't see problem with having men around (nice ones, not grabby ones).
