Looking for advice. I am really somehow tired of having to code on phone l. Any idea of a software people will want to buy that will make enough money to buy a Mac 😖

You code on your phone? Am I reading this right?
  • 2
    Like, how?
  • 1
@rutee07 yeah I code on it. Life is not easy 😂. But I am hobbyist and learning
  • 7
Have you considered a cheaper regular laptop. Its ok if you want a mac, but anything is better then a phone
  • 4
@JosiasAurel Damn. I have an extra Linux laptop here. I'll donate it to you if you lived close.

@rutee07 if I did but it's not the case
  • 0
@24th-Dragon that's all I want. Linux is even ok for me
  • 1
    Oh, you're using termux?
Nice, works like a charm most of the time.
  • 1
    @Ranchu yeah it's cool 👍👍
  • 3
You might want to consider cutting some other expense and use the savings to buy an affordable or 2nd hand computer.
  • 8
Has smart phone, does not have a pc/laptop. I see where your financial priorities lie.

Hell, even a Rpi + wireless keyboard would be better then this.
  • 1
There are some charities you could ask. Google „Laptop Computer for Africa“ That way you could get a used computer for free.
    example...
    https://eauc.org.uk/computers_4_afr...
  • 1
@heyheni will check that out thanks
  • 2
@C0D4 I was thinking in the same lines. I wanted to say he might have an expensive phone so he could consider selling it, buy an inexpensive computer and get a cheaper bar type phone, but it would just be a further lost due to sunk cost from reselling.

Cutting expenses seems more reasonable next steps, if he has the will to do it.
  • 1
@JosiasAurel and two years later of doing Freelance work with that used laptop, you can afford to fly to Paris for vacation and buy yourself a brand new Apple MacBook. 😁
  • 2
@heyheni don't want to be unthankful but the pictures look like they are laptops that can't even run vscode descently or a JetBrains editor. Will still look forward
  • 1
@JosiasAurel Can your phone run vscode or jetbrains decently?
  • 1
@Creep of course it can't (when running normal android) . But using andronix , I can do install arm64 (moded) vscode version. JetBrains too.
  • 2
@Creep the phone is very powerful (1.5GHz Octa core) enough 🤷
  • 1
@Creep and 3gb ram . Don't know what to do
  • 0
@JosiasAurel yeah that could well be the case. 😟 But give it a try. If it doesn‘t work for you, you could sell it on the street market or so.

What‘s your economic situation what can you afford? How long would you need until you‘d gathered 250’000 Xaf / $400?
  • 2
@heyheni currently I am not at the age of getting a job. But I will not be given a pc. So I am looking for a way to get one. I am currently not having a 1XAF 😂. So I try to look for what I can do to get some that can get me buy a laptop that can atleast run a Linux distro like Ubuntu (I really like it)
  • 0
@heyheni and also run Android studio as well
  • 2
I used to do that until this year. My biggest protip would be get an OTG cable/hub and hook your keyboard to phone.
  • 1
Could have a look at a PineBook? Lightweight and very affordable Linux laptops! Feel free to go for a Mac of course but since this is a reliable and way cheaper option...
  • 1
  • 1
    @melezorus34 will look at that
  • 2
@JosiasAurel do you have presentable ideas for apps? If so you could write handwritten letters to NGOs / charities / rich people and present your situation and how your ideas will improve the lives of your community with apps. And to do so you’re in need a capable Laptop as an investment in your future.

You could even spread it by writing many charities and using something like go fund me so that each ngo donate you 100 Euros and in the end you’ll get 1500€ together to buy you a a shiny brand new MacBook Pro.
  • 2
Offer to put stickers with the logos of the ngos on the laptop.
  • 1
@heyheni @heyheni that looks good advice. I indeed have projects that once finished can get me money but without a descent PC. It's hard to do them
  • 0
@JosiasAurel if you write ngos it’s not about how much money you will make, it’s about the social impact that your app will make that’s what they’re interested in. Ideas and passion matter - cash will follow automatically later.

    @heyheni ok 👍👍

@heyheni Looking around again this morning I could get around making this page => https://donate-jos.now.sh/
Using my phone. Just thought if you knew anyone or place you could share just to help 🤷

Have offered people tons of stuff but never been able to afford shipping.

Plenty of people can afford shipping but have nothing to offer.

Theres demand, and supply, but no mechanism to bridge them.

What we really need is an exchange site where membership fees pay the cost of shipping.

Every time you donate something to the site (to be claimed by someone else) you get a token or credit for shipping more things. This helps to prevent gaming the system and rewards those who actually contribute.

Make it transparent, and maybe even setup deliveries via delivery service api.

We could canvas around for groups that NEED this sort of service, like elderly, disabled, and even just people returning books, or things like maker spaces loaning out equipment. Fuck if I know.

@Wisecrack ok that sounds good idea

    @JosiasAurel

I'm capable of coding in something like python (django or better yet flask so it's just an api) along with Onsen UI (to avoid app store competition and fees), but I have no money for hosting/domain name registration!

Theres a lot of *potential* out there that just doesn't have the right *people*. And all we have are gatekeeping VCs and guys who continually do series B because they have the network connections. But lot of good ideas are passed over constantly because they don't have the initial seed, or even the basic resources to get up and running to demonstrate the principle.

Edit: Too bad it's iphone. Got a spare android keyboard kicking around here somewhere. Cheap thing, but I think it still works.
  • 1
@Wisecrack yep that's true. You could use heroku, or netlify, or why not Zeit. (To build API server) . Then mobile app or web app - you decide (I like Django and flask but like Django admin panel 💓)

    @JosiasAurel fellow python programmer! Huzzah!

Well I'm more of a scriptjunkie but who cares.

Currently picking up javascript because thats were all the jobs are for a newbie like me.

But if you have the time it'd be kinda cool to work on something like this.

I could do the frontend (save you the headache) and you could do backend.
  • 0
@Wisecrack I still think it's worth making such a platform to help out those in need. Could just look forward
  • 2
@Wisecrack happy. Looks like we are following same path. I started learning JavaScript because it's too popular (high demand) but I keep some python (and trying to learn golang and nodejs) for backend. Python for data analysis. Python 🤤
  • 0
    @JosiasAurel tell you what.

I'll mock the api and build the frontend.

If you're willing to work on the backend as a sideproject when you're not busy, API will already be mocked via something like mirage js so it's all implementation details.

I guess it could be intimidating to say yes to something new.

FYI I'm not a slave driver startup whore and I won't promise you a pie in the sky. We'll co own it and then open source it of course.

Just something to work on as a hobby project.

It'd just be cool to work on an idea together with someone. I've never done anything except solo work in old and outdated tech.

Think about it and get back to me. Seriously, no pressure man.
  • 0
@JosiasAurel eh, est-ce que tu parle français? That would broaden your chances for finding ngos.
  • 1
@Wisecrack that's me spit it out. It would be cool to have such a project. I am happy to make backend. Frontend and me is like water and oil - I am poor at frontend design (even though I must learn it) GitHub will be a good start
  • 1
@heyheni biensur , j'ai grandi dans le français
  • 0
@JosiasAurel alright then! Cool. I bug you when I have something to post.
  • 1
@JosiasAurel bon, je vais rechercher des NGO pour toi.

Hey Wisecrack and Josias that sounds like a cool idea. Do you guys have telegram? Add me to a group chat @heyheni

Will look forward telegram for group tomorrow it's midnight here (brain frying)

@Wisecrack Also GMT +1 Central Europe

    Sorry to hear that Josias.

I'll get back to you and Heheni in 24-48 hours so we can talk and go over this.
  • 2
@Wisecrack @heyheni in case you started my telegram : https://t.me/JosiasAurel

    I've never used telegram.

    How about slack?

Also, got the core up up and running with onsen. Getting camera access/webcam access/photo upload working client side is a pain in the fucking ass if you've never dont it before and you're not working on native and dont have an ssl cert. Thats working now though.

    You can join me at

    yintercept.slack.com

    Send for an invite to

@Wisecrack ok no problem. I have slack. Amf unfortunately I jad not started anything but @heyheni and made an expose. I will start the backend as early as I can today.
  • 1
@Wisecrack check your inbox. Please use the second email with which I sent you. You could also look in your spam in case it went there
  • 2
We can discuss the details of what we're aiming for in the slack but the proposal is interesting.

The frontend doesn't change that much in that regard. Good old CRUD.

Haven't started a git repository yet because I'm just iterating and sketching out the basic functionality at the moment.

Like I said, I've no team experience prior. (okay, well thats not true. But nothing big or meaningful before now).

Will need a standard api (json) or other to retrieve

    1. users/profiles

    2. submit json-objects as user profiles.

Probably document store on that because we don't have a clean schema yet but you're the backend guy so do what you think is smart. All I know is the data we need is gonna change and it's early so the focus is on iteration, not scale so we'll optimize later when we need to optimize.

    Sound good?
