It's now officially free !

https://pcgamer.com/uk/gta-5-free/

And my rant..

It will take a week to download !

So, if you code your own game, don't make it 100Gb, think of us less than rich folk on less than a fibre connection..

I hope it bloody well works after all this !

( Not the first time I've spent ages downloading something to find out it doesn't run.. )

A colleague sent me this. First thing I saw is Epic Games went down.

I was there at 1AM (local time) damn thing was down quicker then I could hit the GeT button.

But have it now, although I already paid for it on steam 😅

That starter pack is enough for me to grab it though.

Of that 100GB probably less than 1GB is executable game code.

The rest will be assets and art, a large portion of it will likely be audio given how varied and numerous the dialogs and radio stations are.

It sucks for you your internet has not advanced into the 21st century, but there is very little options for engineering around that in big games.

Now on the other hand, if they'd fix the fact it takes 5-10min for a multiplayer session to load with my NVMe SSD, that would be great.

At 100GB many will also have to puchase an extra disk just to install the game…

If you have a problem with the _size_ of the game, large open-world games aren't for you.
  • 4
@Lor-inc Don't even need open world for large games nowadays. I think the last Call of Duty is the biggest one with more than 150GB on disk.

@Lor-inc we all know the scam of No Man's Sky with open world

It took about 4 hours to download for me but only because the download speed was capped by the epic launcher. Given the full capacity of my 500mbps line it would’ve been downloaded much faster.

    @dsteiner Good lord !
    Where are you from ?
500 mbps I struggle for 10 mbps here

@kindawonderful Look at the game now. It is finally what was promised, and more.
  • 2
@Catastrophe Vienna, the Capital of Austria. I could also have 1GBPS but that’s at about 90€/ month which is a bit to much.

You could just get it and leave it for a later time to download.

A week? Laughts in gigabit fibre connection
  • 0
Wait till GTA VI shows up with 140gb hidden in it's cellar
  • 0
Around 15 minutes in giga fiber for me.
  • 2
Had it on Steam for forever when they gave it away there. Can't play it as I can walk faster than the maploader on a 7200RPM drive. GTA:SA streamed the map faster off a 1x DVD on fucking PS2 ffs

    Took 10 hours for me.

@kwilliams 100 GB is roughly 10 whole days' worth of lossless audio. I doubt it's that.
  • 0
    @kamen Only if it's uncompressed ;)
  • 1
@kescherRant I measured that against my FLAC collection, most of it is 16/44.1. Uncompressed it would be about double the size per unit of time.
  • 0
@kamen Oh, so there's a fellow FLAC collector.
