@mellowmymind it's not a simple kind of REST api that everyone uses, they literally made their own encryption algo for this, and you have to comply with all of that endless key generation and checks and shit

    > "Security by obscurity."

    In other words:

    > "If no one can figure out how it works, no one can hack it."

@frogstair Yeah the own encryption is the main reason I refuse to use it hahaha

@linuxxx It does seem to be secure enough to not let them peek on your data, and besides, they are non-profit, they can't sell any of your data
I mean encryption is the whole salepoint of telegram

@frogstair What they advertise themselves as has nothing to do with what they really are like. WhatsApp also advertises itself as encrypted, except they own the client and would rather die than show you the source.

@Lor-inc telegram has an open source client, and as it turns out a pre-made tool to make it easier to interact with the api

@frogstair Over all I agree with you, I was just saying that the manufacturer's claim isn't proof of anything.a

It's a Russian app so I suspect copious amounts of Vodka were the issue instead.

@hashedram true, the creator of telegram sold his social media site, VK, which is the most visited, largest site in Russia, to a giant russian corporation for 1 billion roubles (not a hyperbole, this is 100% real), so he had money to buy all the Vodka in russia and still have some money left

@frogstair > they are a non-profit, they can't sell any of your data

Hooo boy, have you ever heard of people doing shady deals out of sight? You think just because they promote their open source product, that they cannot sell you off to the highest bidder and pocket the money?

@endor one of those non profits where the company doesn’t take any profit, but everyone on the board takes home 7 figures
