Never make -j8 when compiling anything substantial unless you enjoy suffering.

    Uh, I just compiled Chromium with that while watching YouTube on the same machine.
    Where's the issue?

    I do that in linux all the time. Is it on hdd or ssd? Is it a 4 logical core system (too many threads)? Exclude directory from anti virus?

    I was doing some buildroot nonsense today using all my cores and it made life hell.

    @RocketSurgeon Did doing -j7 help? Was it possible it was IO bound?

    Compilation should have low priority so you can do anything at the same time normally. Sounds like it drained resources elsewhere than the cpu. Maybe you were running out of ram or disk io as mentioned.
