Switched my remaining Debian servers to devuan. I highly recommend it, the team has done a great job

One of the few remaining Linux distros I will use

    Great, next job would be switching to a non-systemd + musl distro.

    How do you even say it's name?

    Systemd seems to be evil. What exactly is it used for?
  • 1
    @nitwhiz DevOne apparently

    How's the package repo? Any incompatible packages or lack of packages you've encountered as compared to debian?
  • 6
    @nitwhiz
    It's pronounced "templeOS"

    So just Debian without systemd? How much does systemd impact server performance, have you taken any benchmarks?
  • 3
    @matt-jd they patched packages that depended on systemd. Seems flawless so far. I migrated real debian systems to Devuan without reinstalling and it worked like a charm.

    @owenw it performs mostly the same, in some cases better without systemd. The real difference is you don’t run into unexpected downtimes due to systemd bugs

    I was using sysvinit in debian but even more shit than before depends on it starting in buster so I had been avoiding upgrading.

    @Wombat it’s a terribly written init system with a very poor design vision and tons of bugs.

    @FrodoSwaggins
    I'm pretty sure it's a
    DNS-resolver
    Boot-,session-,device-manager
    syslog-,ntp-daemon
    With limited services supervision capabilities.

    I always pronounced it, "dev-yoo-wan." Apparently I was wrong.

    Openrc is nice.

    *laughs in OpenBSD*
    But getting that up and getting stuff running on it is such a gigantic pain.

    @Wombat everything, and that's the problem
