Since I am vain as fuck but also lazy, I check my appearance in the webcam instead of walking to the bathroom and using the the mirror. As I am also technologically challenged, I'm still not sure how to open the webcam on Ubuntu, I wrote a 10 lines c++ program (OpenCV) to do it for me. Yeah...

    Wow, that is some dedication.
    I googled "webcam app Linux".

Not sure what Ubuntu uses by default, but a program called Cheese should be at least available in the standard repos.

You could automate it further to point out if there are any problems. It could monitor you real time during the meeting and sound an alarm if something has gone wrong.

    It's called cheese

@electrineer *DANGER DANGER; You're rolling your eyes again*

@electrineer An app that recognizes objects through my webcam while another program is using it and warns if something inappropriate is visible or there's too much trash in view would actually be amazing.

I would even consider remote analytics for a guarantee never to be embarrassed by something in my room during a call.

@homo-lorens train an AI to recognize bad hair and add automaticly a bad connection blur on the webcam stream and post a notification ;)

@Jedidja I was more thinking about random clothes and dishes lying around. Stuff I don't necessarily notice in the feedback window because to me it's a natural part of my environment.

Heh, reminds me of another story. Friend of mine used a Mac for the first time on holiday (,bought it just before he went) and had no internet when he was there. Didn't know backspace deleted files. Turns out he was just doing it in the terminal whenever he needed to.

This guy writes 10 lines for webcam.
    Webcam PPAs>
Chesse: Am I a joke to you?
    Kamoso: Hold my beer!
    Ochi: Ouchi
QtCam: I feel my heart crack
    Ekiga: Sad noises

@bittersweet These two can coexist. My colleague finishes his PhD in robotics soon, and still doesn't understand how to use our Moodle after 5 years of TAing.

@NickyBones does anyone really understand how to use Moodle, though
  • 2
@electrineer I have some Moodle skills
  • 3
    @electrineer I don't even know what a Moodle is 🤷

Is it like a moody poodle? A cow-shaped pasta noodle?

Anyway, I do have noticed that as I get older I give less of a crap about understanding certain technological things. I installed Snapchat at some point for example, and found it infuriating and confusing. When I was younger, I would have completely learned the manual and all settings of the LG C9 TV I bought. Now... Meh, I know how to switch between Netflix and Kodi, so I'm good.

@bittersweet Actually, that cow-shaped pasta noodle sounds pretty dope. I could really go for some Moodles and cheese right about now...
