So today I worked with a drill (and actually managed to do what I intended). Where do I collect my trophy and "alpha male" certificate?
This is as far from software as I ever strayed...

I took on retro speakers renovation. It takes much longer than I thought, but the hardware feel is a nice one. And I learnt CAD to have wooden parts CNC milled!

@HCC5GDKc7 I use OpenSCAD for 3D printing, but CNCing is next level :D

Whenever I pick up a drill I send a warning to my friends that If I don't send an status update the next hour they should call an ambulance.

Me not good with stuff like that...

When I studied EE, 3 months of craftsman internship were required, ideally before starting studies. Sawing, filing, drilling, cutting threads, lathing, engraving, soldering, work safety, all of that was mandatory.

It was really awesome to learn that on a fast track. Not as good as real craftsmen, but sufficient for prototypes and DIY.

Fun fact: it was rather difficult to even get such an internship. I snail-mailed to about a hundred places. Luckily, Word Perfect offered macros that I programmed to spit out the letters one by one plus address stickers while I left the room because my matrix printer was so freaking loud.

Your (new?) employer sounds like they are making you go through an apprenticeship.
If that's ok with you, it's perfectly fine.
German apprenticeships are very valuable.
Of not.. You said something something PhD,
then run!

@scor I'm doing a PhD in robotics. In labs with a lot of budget you have technical people dedicated to tasks like that. But since we don't have a mechanic, we need to do all the tweaking.

I want to build a boat from scratch like Gibbs from NCIS 🤠
