    @justin-tamblyn If you know your colleagues salary then you know if you're getting fucked over in comparison and vice versa.

    Great point. I agree. What would you say about not sharing your salary with the person interviewing you?

    @justin-tamblyn Depends, if you do then the interviewer knows he can hire you for cheaper than expected. If you share then he also knows he will have to go higher than your current salary. If you don't then you could possibly be able to negotiate a much higher salary thus it really depends on luck.

    A lot of employment contracts will specifically state that you can't discuss your salary with anyone @LinuxUser0001. Obviously, it's pretty tough to enforce so it's sort of up to the individual. As a contractor I'm happy to discuss my rate with other contractors, but not so much full time employees because they tend to feel undervalued as a result (despite all the perks and security they enjoy that I don't).

    @LinuxUser0001 my thoughts exactly. It really comes down to a social dynamic, and who holds the position of power. In a software team, that's typically the manager so it's in their best interest to keep team members in the dark about each other. In an interview it really depends, are you the pretty girl at the dance? You can sometimes disclose your salary to play two parties off one another and get more for yourself.
