Interviewer: So how long did you work at your last job?
Man: 30 years
Interviewer: and how old are you?
Man: 22 years
Interviewer: you're 22 and you have 30 years of experience that's not possible
Man: and you are looking for a junior dev with 5 years of experience4 -
>22 year old college student
>Apply for a QA internship
>Interview goes well, they see I have plenty of experience and doubt it's real
>Hard questions are thrown
>Answer them and they admit the position is for manual testing
I honestly don't care I need the money, plus manual testing doesn't usually strain me.
>A week goes by
>A month goes by
>Call them
>...Sorry we were looking for someone with less technical and dev experience.
My fucking face when I don't have a title, still overqualified, fighting with WordPress devs on freelancer.14 -
So that high level prank from yesterday.
Senior Linux engineer, the fucker.
He somehow installed shitloads of cron jobs onto my system.
Every few minutes it would create a new user with a freaking complicated password. Then it would install openssh server in case it wasn't installed yet. After that it'd set all iptables rules to allow incoming AND outgoing connections on port 22.
That was one badass ansible script though!
I'm not sure what more there's to it because sometimes when i removed crons, they'd magically appear again later AND i forgot to check the boot scripts so i might be fucked again when I get to work today!
Plus side, i finally fully understand cron 😅19 -
Today.
Last night someone detonated an improvised nail bomb at a concert venue in downtown Manchester. 22 dead and 59 injured (many life threatening).
I'm working from home as my home is listed as a safe haven.
I'm not sure how much, if any, work I'll get done.
If you're in Manchester and need anything let me know.
It's all very much process:
Check everyone I know is ok
List house as safe space
Buy food
Keep passing information around to those who need it
No real time to think about it, just stay in the "response" mode.12 -
So I just had an interview a couple weeks ago at one of the largest employers of software engineers in the country. After multiple stages of group interviews it came to the 2 on 1 individual interview with some project leads (picture devs using a MacBook with Github stickers - lads). Among the questions they asked me we both had a laugh at 2 of them:
Q: Explain how deadlocks work?
A: Hire me and I will explain how they work.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
A: Celebrating 22s 22m 22h 22/12/2022.
Strangely enough they hired me 😎1 -
If Stack Overflow really crashed it would never be fixed since the devs would be stuck refreshing Stack Overflow forever.2

To IT: I can no longer clone GitHub repos from the command line.
From IT… Hello DevOps engineer…. You’re no longer allowed to use port 22. It’s not safe. All traffic must be port 443.
Really!?8 -
23:04 Client: We need these changes pushed to production before morning.
06:22 Staff: Changes pushed to prod.
<Tells story to manager>
Manager: Sum up the time you've worked on it and double it.
This isn't a special thing, we however have a policy stated in our contracts that all changes must be scheduled with a minimum of 24h before the time they're needed.8 -
D: Hey, your stuff isn't working, fix your stuff or it will become a road blocker.
Me: Why it is not working?
D: Because I used the same table as you used, and I changed a few things. there are 22 reasons for it.
(polite conversation stopped and I redirected him to my manager)
WTF? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? YOU CHANGED MY STUFF WITHOUT TELLING ME AND YOU ARE NOT USING ANY SOURCE CONTROL? WTF? YOU CREATED THIS SHIT AND CALL MY STUFF NOT WORKING? ARE YOU A FUCKING IDIOT?
CUT YOUR FINGERS AND POINT TO YOURSELF.2 -
I'm so grateful DevOps is now a thing. I remember getting a phone call from a client at 2am on a Friday because their site was down and having to ssh in from a Nokia with the world's tiniest keyboard to reboot the server.
Of course that particular server only exposed port 22 on it's local network, so I had to first ssh into another server which did have its ssh port open to external connections.
Trying to remember two sets of credentials and type them in on a tiny keyboard, while so drunk you were seeing double, standing outside in the rain as it was the only place you got signal. Yeah…I'm so grateful DevOps is now a thing7 -
I was at the airport, 2AM, waiting for the plane I was supposed to board to come from another airport... Got bored, scanned the WiFi networks, found an open network with the ID of the airline I had booked with, joined, and tried port 22 on the gateway... It was a Cisco router with the default password... Needless to say, I thought I needed to teach those guys a lesson... Messed the routing table, changed its IP, disabled DHCP, and restarted the router. Needless to say, we couldn't board because they couldn't check us in...21

COVID variants should adopt a semantic versioning, rather than using greek alphabetics.

COVID v.22 release 1 (being tested somewhere in London)
COVID v.22 nightly builds (still brewing in China)6 -

Is it normal my boss want me to pay for the coffee I drink at work? 🤔
He asks me €1 for 2 coffee capsules for his coffee machine, while each costs only 22 cents… fucking bastard.
And it doesn't even taste good…24 -
HoD in my college is a "22 year experienced C programmer" with a PhD in CS.
One day I went to him and told, it is very hard to work with TurboC, and it isn't needed as we can easily migrate to GCC.
He asked me why was I complaining. No other student has any problem. They have been using it ever since the college started and everyone was "comfortable" with it.
I stood silent. He then went on to say, even JVM was coded in TurboC. I nodded and left the office as i didn't have an argument.
He's the same guy who had earlier said, "printf returns an array of characters printed", so I guess everything works here.11 -
*tries to SSH into my laptop to see how that third kernel compilation attempt went*
… From my Windows box.
Windows: aah nope.
"Oh God maybe the bloody HP thing overheated again"
*takes laptop from beneath the desk indent*
… Logs in perfectly. What the hell... Maybe it's SSH service went down?
$ systemctl status sshd
> active (running)
Well.. okay. Can I log in from my phone?
*fires up Termux*
*logs in just fine*
What the fuck... Literally just now I added the laptop's ECDSA key into the WSL known_hosts by trying to log into it, so it can't be blocked by that shitty firewall (come to think of it, did I disable that featureful piece of junk yet? A NAT router * takes care of that shit just fine Redmond certified mofos).. so what is it again.. yet another one of those fucking WanBLowS features?!!
condor@desktop $ nc -vz 192.168.10.30 22
Connection to 192.168.10.30 22 port [tcp/ssh] succeeded!
ARE YOU FUCKING FOR REAL?!
Fucking Heisen-feature-infested piece of garbage!!! Good for gaming and that's fucking it!
Edit: (*) this assumes that your internal network doesn't have any untrusted hosts. Public networks or home networks from regular users that don't audit their hosts all the time might very well need a firewall to be present on the host itself as well.17 -
I recently filled out an e-form that asked you to fill out your birthday in the format of:
DD/MM/YY

I was confused at first. I'm over 18 what's the issue?
Turns out it would only accept 22/9/1997
What sort of monster does that?11 -

My daughter made me two things:
1) She found a rock in the shape of an “alien” head. Knowing I love to research UFOs, she used nail polish to decorate the rock like an alien. And I just love it!
2) I have a reputation for being just like Charlie Brown with my luck in life. I also suck at math. Like, really, really bad. I was diagnosed with dyscalculia 22 years ago. It’s a running joke at our house such that I even have the t-shirt she depicts me wearing in this painting of “me” she did for my birthday.3 -
I'm afraid that the wanketeers got a hold of this one.. as if I care how fast or slow your browser is, as long as it isn't completely shit like pre-Quantum Firefox used to be! Hi guys

I hate devRant. Since morning I am suffering from diarrhoea and vomiting. My stomach aches bad and I have a complete bed rest. I had nothing good to do, so I went through the play store searching for new apps. I came across devRant which seem interesting to me. I downloaded and went through the app. I read posts straight for four hours and couldn't resist LMAO. I've been constantly laughing (literally constantly) and now my stomach aches so bad. Its 22:00 and I fear I might have to catch a doctor soon. I know devRant is the culprit and yet I have it open, in my phone, typing a useless non-humorous post. Freaking addictive. Ah my stomach..6

I posted a "Periodic Table of Human Intellect" I created today, and thought it was worth sharing.
Ages:
0-14 = Dumb as fuck.
15-21 = Learning useless shit.
22-28 = Claiming to know everything. *
29-35 = Reality sets in.
36-48 = Fuuuuuuuuu...
48-59 = Deal with it and watch your step.
60+ = ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Of course, I'm still in the process of testing the predicted results of 48+ - but, I'm looking forward to no longer giving even half a shit.
(* Based on everything useless that they've learned.)16 -

22:00 - Get into bed and put on audiobook
23:00 - "Alright I'm getting sleepy now, I should fall asleep soon :)"
00:00 - "Must be soon now"
01:00 - "Maybe in 15 minutes"
02:00 - "Still got 6 hours to sleep, plenty of time"
03:00 - "My body is tired, my mind is not"
04:00 - "RIP"
It's safe to say that my sleep rhythm is utterly fucked.14 -

Today was my first day at work after Easter break...
It's 22:00 and my head is buried in my pillow filled by random thoughts of violence, rm -rf / schemes and questions about where my life is going!

Or something involving waffles...

Setup my port honeypot today finally, including port 22, then wrote a custom dashboard for some data tracking, feels great to have it open on my screen seeing the bans just roll in every 2 seconds of refresh, the highest hits are as expected from china, russia and india, also filed ~700 reports and already got 300 banned from their service. (mainly Microsoft Azure for whatever reason)
I wanted to first automate that (or atleast blacklist report to various IP lists via API), but then I was afraid that I'll be one day stupid enough to somehow get banned - don't want myself to get reported lol5 -
Put in 22 hours of work (straight through) and an end user requested changes the next day.
Fuck you, I'm out. -
So I just made a throwaway SO account because I had a 'risky' question and I don't wanna loose my 22 hard earned reputation points on my main account.
Maybe it's just me but I think it's very sad that asking a question on SO that doesn't get downvotes is so difficult.
Anyways, if anyone knows about UMDF drivers, here's the question: https://stackoverflow.com/q/...5 -

Might be a loose interpretation of 'vacation', but I was running a marathon using my phone for tunes, when suddenly I got a call from my boss; our application server had died and he had no idea how to restart it. So while running the race I was timing my exhales to give him the step-by-step instructions for reset-to-restart. The good news is that the miles just flew by as he read the logs, and I responded with commands. Suddenly I was at mile 22 and was actually feeling pretty good; didn't finish the race with a PR but was happy with the result and did get the server back up.2

Here’s how you deploy changes in Soviet Russia.
“Dear subscriber of the Great Soviet Encyclopedia
The government scientific publisher “The Great Soviet Encyclopedia” recommends you remove pages 21, 22, 23 and 24 from book 5, as well as the portrait in between pages 23 and 24. Replacement pages containing new text will be sent to you.
You have to cut those pages off with scissors or razor, keeping a small area you have to glue the new pages to.

Context: this happened after Lavrentiy Beria, the man who carried on the great terror after Ezhov, was declared the enemy of the state and executed.7 -

How Bad I'm at frontend Development: about 3 year ago i accidentally wrote </from> instead of </form> while working on the frontend of a website, everything just went bonkers. Took me 10+ hours to realize my mistake.
In my opinion frontend devs are real hero they have to learn multiple frameworks, and make website respinsive and work on IE at the same time. Idk Why the fuck clients still want their website to work on IE (fuck you Carl, your users are of age group 15-22 they don't even know wtf IE is)
P. S. At that time i didn't knew HTML validators are a thing.6 -
Last week my university decided to give away old hardware to students (CPUs, displays, keyboard, mouse, speakers, printers etc.). My roommate got me this beast. I was so excited and decided to boot it up only see to GRUB error 22 :( I think the hard drives were wiped before handing it out.
I've never set up a server before and I've been trying to boot up an Ubuntu server via USB drive but it's not detecting the OS installation files. I've been searching all around to make this work but it's not fucking working. I don't have any other cables or CD drive to try something else. I want to make this work. I have exams next week and I can't stop thinking about this. Godammit8 -

My setup: AMD Phenom-2 1100T with fat cooler for silent PC, 16 GB ECC RAM, AMD Radeon HD-6850 passively cooled, WD Blue 1 TB HDD. One 22 inch monitor with 1650 x 1050.
The mouse is a bit broken because the click switch under the mouse wheel doesn't work anymore. The empty bottle in front of the PC is necessary for lying on the room light switch, or else it won't work. And the black/yellow tape is a fix for the worn out seat cover.
But the best, under the monitor, is the little green troll that serves as rubber duck. -

I wrote my last exam on the 22, took the train home on 23, spent Christmas and the 25 with my family, searched for a new apartment for 3 days, had two days left to do an assignment due to the 30, was packing till 3 in the morning today and will have my first day of work tomorrow. An example of today's generation:
My little cousin 22 years old wants to get into BI Dev. I tell him to read a certain book. The book has practice examples and various things that are hands on.
What does he do?
He READS the book and is like, "ask me any question and I know the answer". So I'm like, "fine, what's the structure of a basic SQL statement?", after some hard thought he's like, "SELECT * FROM?" I'm like, "ok.....how would you filter that?" and he's like, "you got me man........no clue".
What didn't he do?
Practice.
I mean.........come on.3 -

Super angry and thought I would let it out here, even though its not related to coding.
So we had an assignment at school "Make a 10 minutes long radio report about montreal".
I teamed up with a "friend" and two gals.
First of all everything was fine.
but then, the "friend", last sunday, told me to translate 22 pages until the monday after and invited himself to my house. Those 22 pages, he should have written in english, but because hes too bad he didnt and wanted me to translate em. Even worse: He fought me with bad arguments and by swearing me in order not to have to do it in english.
So he invited himself and his gf to my home to work on that. I didnt want that, so I told em we could mee up in the school.
But then, he continued to annoy me with making me to translate them as fast as possible, he told me how he didnt believe in the excuse I made for not being able to invite them.
SO I just scrapped the meeting, without telling them, I didnt answer on the phone.
Now, hes super salty and wants me to do everything. LITTERALLY!
I have about 40h of work in front of me because he made many bad desicions.
What do you think?
Is he correct with that? Should I have gone to that meeting?
Have I made an error?18 -

My biggest personal challenge as a dev is learning and retaining, as well as keeping current, any particular language. I swear I really did build a career as an HTML/JS/CSS programmer. I have a resume that shows I did. But for some reason, lately, every time I open an editor I feel like I'm starting over from 22 years ago. Everything I do nowadays is copy/paste from StackOverflow, hiring another dev to help out, or cribbing code from past projects. I'd love to be able to just open Sublime and start coding like a badass like I imagine other coders do, but I just can't even get started. WTF is wrong with me?

Frist time poster & 22 y.o. junior dev here.
I just wanted to get advice in which direction I should start my career.
I just finished my education last year as a Software Engineer and am now undecided if I should more go into Front- ore Backend.
I‘m currently doing mostly Python as a allrounder but am really intrested in React.
Is there a big difference in sallary (if that maters, I‘m from switzerland) or career oportunitys? How do I figure out the correct way I should go?
Thanks you so much for your help!17 -
Don't forget, docker desktop will require paid licenses after 31/1/22
Docker Desktop remains free for small businesses (fewer than 250 employees AND less than $10 million in annual revenue), personal use, education, and non-commercial open source projects.
Just a friendly reminder to fuck docker and migrate to a better solution.27 -
How bad is it for a fortune 500 company to open port 22 over the internet for all its linux servers?? Today, I reported this to my boss and he said "it won't be a problem, no one can login without a password".8

So I was working on a website for a club in my college. I designed a pretty decent UI and at first everyone accepted it. So I made a working website with my friend, made backend with node and all was set.
After that, the fucking member of club brought in another graphic designer for changes. And they literally made the whole website with heavy images. The designer made heavy neon backgrounds in Adobe Illustrator and didn't even compressed it.
They made the whole fucking website with images and they ran it all on localhost and were happy with the speeds! ಠ_ಠ
They even put an image in fucking Navbar!
And then I left that project, I could not see more destruction.1 -

Stack Overflow is a great resource for all sorts of programming hints and tips, information and...sadly, desinformation. But if you want to comment on something someone's said you need 50 reputation points. How to achieve that when you need rep points to do anything that could earn you rep points? It's a catch 22 for newcomers that are like totally excluded from any discussions at SO which is more sort of a read-only community to me. This is where devRant shines. Anyone can rant about anything and comment on anyone's rant. Some rants and comments are stupid, and some are great. In the end of the day, freedom of speech is a great thing.9

[No spoilers, Mr. Robot, I hope] I saw this screen, and I'm truly curious about one thing:
What does line 21 and 22 do (double print statement)?
Is it an error or is it actually doing something that I don't understand?
I saw he is redirecting stdout to the file, but why the "print out" and "print(out)", does it make anything different that I'm not aware of??19 -

So I'm looking at the jobs available and the jobs I'm applying for and realizing that even though I'm never gonna use the 70+ languages (exaggeration) in daily work for any of these prospective employers, I'd better have those languages (and 5+ years of experience in each) just because HR is keyword happy about stuff they know nothing about.
So how do you manage to get 5+ years of experience in something you don't have 5+ years of experience in so that you can get a job where you don't actually need 5+ years of experience in those things anyway? Do I just hit up LinkedIn Learning and start grinding away on tutorials, then stick their "certifications" on my resume? For what purpose if it's stuff I can't get the needed experience in because I don't already have 5+ years of it?
How did I ever get a job in my field if, according to HR drones, I don't have any experience in what I'm doing now?12 -

On a project that will crash and burn due to a badly projected date given to the business. I'm team lead and the Developement manager. I'm not sure how to save my career from this one. 22 years at this company and this may end my employment.
Can't change the date because the business has had it with deployment failures. Not enough time to do any of the technical debt and I'm not sure one if the issues has a solution.
Time to create a resume I guess. Been a really long time.

Can someone tell me why C++ and python are so widely used in the AI department? I kind of understand… you want maximum performance (plus GPU) with C++ or easy logic with Python but still, it seems like other languages would still have there benefits in AI. It just doesn't make sense to me, why isnt it like every single other part of computer science where everyone under 22 thinks "now this is what JavaScript was made for!" (I mean js is used so much in other parts of cs, why not AI). Am I missing something? Maybe the resources are missing for AI in other languages? Can someone please expand12

How did your quest into the dev world look like? That's mine:
First time: Age 12, was in a C++ evening class for like 2 weeks, I undetstood nothing.
Second time: Age 16-18
Fiddled with scripts for steam games and jailbroken my iPhone while fiddling with aystem configs. Nothing major.
Third time: Age 19, learned Python in a Cybersecurity course. Failed miserably because the tutors were shit, thought I hated programming.
Fourth time: Age 21, developed a lot of scripts in my sysadmin job, one of them needed a GUI so I leanred C# and WPF. Enjoyed it so much I eventually enrolled in a Java 10 month course.
Fifth time: Now, age 22, learning Android and Fullstack javascript by myself. Enjoying every moment.
I still work as a sysadmin though.3 -
I did some general searches in the actual project. The names of 22 variables and attributes I created contain the word 'shit', and 5 contain 'fuck'.4

Development: we need Nginx installed on *insert server list*
Me: ok, let me get in tough with the platform team.
Platform team: This should be installed in the userspace, Unix teams don't support this.
And here I am, trying to get a reverse proxy running on servers on which I do not have sudo rights.
Since it doesn't work, it's my fault, both sides block the door.
I installed it locally on a virtual machine, but the compiled or installed code doesn't work once copied.

I don’t want to come across as entitled, but what kind of person gets a software internship in California?
I go to university in California, I’m a junior CS student, I have 8 public ios apps (2 charted in US, 1 acquired small sum [5k]), I completely designed the blockchain parameters and built multiple front-end apps for a new cryptocurrency (it hit 3mil$ market cap).
And I applied to 22 tech companies. Rejected from pretty much all (waiting on my dream company still). Do they just not even get to some applications or do I literally have to be superhuman?5 -
So I started this morning with 22 emails from an automated system at my university thanking me for signing up for every single fitness class being offered this semester and asking me to fill out a health information form and waiver. (22 emails, one for each course.) Because the semester started last week, and I had added a class (after some drama with the system not behaving correctly at first), I spent a few minutes making sure I had not accidentally signed up for something I had not intended to.
Later in the day, the school sent out an email apologizing for their script which had sent an email for each class to every student on campus. (So each of several thousand students got 22 emails this morning, most of them unnecessary.) To compound the problem (at least in my opinion) they asked the students who should have gotten the message to treat the email barrage as their legitimate notification, and everyone else to ignore the messages. (They should have invalidated all the messages and re-sent the legitimate ones. Never treat erroneous messages as a legitimate notice. Separate the two and do things properly.)

After doubting Deepin OS for 4 days and slangs to Windows, it turns out, ISP is blocking the port 22, which is why I was not able to communicate to my instance through SSH.
One of the major Cellular company and Fastest 4G in the whole country, 'Idea', is blocking the vital port 22. I keep seeing news story after news story talking about the progress we’re making in AI and how there are not enough developers to fill the jobs in demand for it. I tossed my alternate career choice of aerospace over two decades ago because there were no interesting career paths in what I was capable of doing (not much because I suck at math). And here I am 22 years deep into a Web Dev career that I feel is going to be completely obsolete well before my retirement age. I either need to do the impossible and get good at advanced math so I can even understand the very basics of AI or I need to win the lottery.1

If you ever have the pleasure of teaching kids (perhaps because they chose to stay home and pretend to be sick) teach them math.
Specifically teach them division. Have them divide 22/7.
Let them keep going until they ask 'when do we stop?'

I was just thinking about this.
How old was everyone when they first go into IT? Something along the lines of when you wrote your first program or script, or when you first started a programming course, etc. And what was the reason?
I was 22. First proper start was through an Intro to Information Technology course as part of my current degree. I was working a dead-end, depressing callcentre job. I was thinking what my life was going to be like, so I made a concious decision to start my degree and make something of myself. It's, of course, a bit more detailed but I am more interested in what others have to share.15 -

I was under fire right now.
One cellular company, Idea, whose Internet service works really good, was blocking port 22.
And other, BSNL, which works terrible at my home, and is not working recently, since last few days( Maybe be data pack was over ), atleast support port 22.
Just got the call from client who has to send sms to all its clients, immediately. So BSNL was not working. And Idea was not supporting port 22.
Still, I gave IDEA Cellular, a try, and luckily it worked today. They started supporting port 22, at the right time.

How many of you have managers who grill their employees for coming late?
Maybe it's just me being downright lazy but I've always had this idea that working for a tech company would mean flexible timings and no fixed minimum working hours (as long as you meet your deadlines and get the job done).
I've been working for this small AI/CV startup for about 10 months now and my manager/founder's nephew, who is my age(22) keeps grinding me for not coming on time. I'm not really a morning person (and my productivity decreases significantly whenever I wake up early) but I make sure I meet my deadlines.
Initially, I used to avoid all this BS but now it has started to annoy me. Suggestions?10 -

I spend the day trying to setup a shared git repository. Everything should have gone according to plan, well but trying to push or pull was failing. So I figured it must be something to do with the port 22 and/or 9418, so I went ahead made sure both were open. Port 22 was already open since I could ssh into the box. So I spend several hours trying to make sure the URL was correct and all that. Here's the kicker, I somehow didn't "git init --bare ." In my defense I ran a pre-prepared script by copying and pasting. The last line didn't execute it seems. I figured this out by "cd repo.git && ls -as". Does "ls" qualify as a function, cause this baby is my hero.

I don't want to go to SO, that place is toxic, and asking a dumb question on devrant feels like a waste of peoples time as well. Is there a platform for alone-ish developers to ask more experienced devs questions? without being shamed to death?5

It was a weird day today, overall good. My web development books arrived by courier and I got started straight away with them, Thought I was reluctant at first to learn HTML all over again and try JS or CSS, Completed 3 projects by 22:00 and now can't hold myself together and now I falling apart to sleeping state. (No caffeine) Perhaps, I should continue Learning Python along with Web.

While investigating alternatives for translating a query string to a dotnet expression I discovered that roslyn has runtime eval of string as verbatim code.
I had no idea a feature could make me this uncomfortable. It's like discovering an armed bomb under your bed that's "there if you want - it has its uses, just be careful".
At least you have to explicitly reference a package for it. Promise to kill me if I ever am tempted by it. -
"Please provide steps to reproduce" seems to be the catch-22 when people try and kick up a fuss about a bug I'm certain doesn't exist.
It's funny because then they report the bug, they word it like I've ruined their life, that can simply cannot continue to function until this error is fixed, yet those simple magic words "Provide steps to reproduce" seems to put their prioritise back into perspective or at the least scares them back into the void from which they came. -

People, have you tried the new board system on GitLab's issues?
I use Gitlab in my company (because it's awesome), but my personal projects are in GitHub. I'm thinking about moving some of them to GitLab because of this feature (I really like to organize things and really hate to use multiple services to run a project, so this new board/kanban system makes Taiga, which I am currently using to run things, kind of redundant).
About the new GitLab's feature

The downside of this is that I don't see GL as a social experience like GH.
Any avice? Thank you.

If your manager asks you to write a raw algorithm based on raw data in order to properly structure, sort and filter that data, how long do you take on average to complete said task?
Example:
Here's a text file with a bunch of continuous data like: john doe 5555 my street 123 karen wiscott 12347 her street 22 peter wright
..and then you first have to start identifying boundaries for each data entry (which is a task on its own, with comparators and shit), solve its bugs.. then you have to make sure it's properly getting sorted.. sort those bugs.. Yeah, it just takes a long time for me to figure all that out.
It takes me 4-5 days on average since I'm a junior but managers expect it to only take 1-4 hours.. madness..4 -
I try to be conservative and only use my phone a little, I didn't even play games/videos and still it went from 100-22% in under 6 hours... like how did it even?3

Google thinks that TRIAC was invented on Dec 19, 1963 by General Electric, but in reality the first TRIAC patent was filed on June 22, 1963 by Russian scientists from Saransk.5

Bought a cheap coffee maker a few weeks ago (only 22 bucks). Worked just fine.
Now it stopped working and I debugged it, the thermal fuse is blown and the warranty is gone too..
A small price to pay for knowing what the problem is though 😅2 -
My head of products idea of an urgent bug is a feature that he really wants in the app.

Anyone here from Germany who ordered from the devRant Swag Store?
I've ordered some devDucks and I'm wondering how customs will be handled, considering that the amount I paid is above the 22€ which would pass customs just fine.
That being said, I can't wait to bring them to work and surprise my coworker. We're just 2 devs in the company, so I ordered 2 ducks and a cape to swap them. This way, we always got a duck that knows what we're talking about. :-)1 -
so one time (yesterday), I was playing phantom forces console edition (a game on Roblox) and this IDIOT started sweating with a ppsh-41, I was so pissed and angry so I started using the Beowulf ECR and I was losing, my team was losing super badly. Until the match switched to Warehouse, when it switched to Warehouse, I beat his ass like a drum. I got a 3.14 KD, 22-7.
He sucked and deserved to take that L, fuck that man. -
On Dailymotion, failed uploads count towards the 24-hour rate limit.
Dailymotion has a rate limit of somewhere between 10 to 15 videos (appears to vary). I experienced a glitch where I dragged 10 videos into the uploader (the highest number; years earlier it oddly was 22), and none of the uploads would start. However, it still counted towards the daily rate limit, immediately blocking me from uploading for 24 hours. I have a slight suspicion that this failure was deliberate.
Also, that rate limit is indiscriminate of video size. A gigabyte-sized 4K video counts equally towards the rate limit as a 7 MB 240p video.1 -

The following is a genuine error from the runtime when you give apple a "nil" date:
2012-09-19 22:40:13.972 APPNAME [4923:907] * -[__NSCFCalendar components:fromDate:]: date cannot be nil
I mean really, what do you think that operation is supposed to mean with a nil date?
An exception has been avoided for now. -
wk89 the first game I played was a fighter plane simulation game. 3D, very realistic at that time. Maybe around 2006. I just don't know the name of the game since I was a kid. The aircraft might be F-22. Anyone knows the name of the game?4

Late night thoughts: what if I write a simple script to reboot my PC and run it automatically after each start up? How do I ever stop it?
Seems quite dumb but I can't think of any easy solution..1 -
I'm currently working on a project that scrapes the SEC's EDGAR website for type 4 filings.
I currently have the required data in raw text format that somehow looks like xml, i really can't tell what it is but i'm trying to parse this data into json.
I've not parsed something as complex as this before and will appreciate any form of pointers as to how to go about this.
i have attached a screenshot of one sample.
this link fetches the data of a single filing in text format.

Not best practice whatsoever because the box was most likely owned, but...
SSH kept defaulting back to port 22 when it wasn't supposed to. So, wrote a cronjob that checked diff between SSH config and backed up SSH config. If different, reload backup. Didn't get locked out again.
Box has of course been replaced.2 -
This is a PSA in case anybody thinks of installing BitTorrent. I used it for thirty seconds and cancelled the download. Things were noticeably slufggish afterward. I ran Malwarebytes and it identified 22 viruses, all associated with BitTorrent. Before quarantining the viruses I uninstalled BT. When I quarantined the viruses I got the blue screen of death. I was able to reinstall Windows. NEVER DOWNLOAD BITTORRENT.7

I need your help. I'm currently deciding on setting up a proper multi-monitor set up (inspired by the ones you guys have) at home so I can be better productive since my current "desk" at home is actually my bed (I have a dual monitor set-up at work). I have decided on two monitor choices.
My current budget is around LKR 25,000 (USD 155) per month without it eating into my living expenses (welp, i'm poor 😢).
Do you think I should go for:
2x Dell P2214H 22" monitors in 1 month - LKR 23,600 (USD 146) (per month for one month)
https://dell.com/en-us/work/...
or ..
2x ASUS VZ249H Frameless 23.8" monitors in 2 months - LKR 25,000 (USD 155) (per month for two months)
https://asus.com/lk/Monitors/...
I would really really appreciate your opinions on this.5 -

Managed by pure chance to see (and screencap) my "score" of first 666, 777 and now 888. Was almost as fun as when my car was at 22 222. I wonder if we don't have to make computers more aware of how many weird little quirks we have for personal AI assistants to actually work well.1
