I like backend development because I love how rewarding it feels to write systems that are consumed by multiple frontends. It always feels like a lot is at stake and small optimization can make a lot of user experiences faster.4

When you've got 4 personal projects to finish, 2 computers to build, 1 full-time job to wrap up, an online course to complete, Uni starts in two weeks and your family decided it's the perfect time to go on vacation.
It's 2:30 am and this is my life.6 -
Had an interview this morning..
Interviewer - have you used github?
Me - yes
Intw - so, you have a profile on github?
Me - yes (** in mind, I don't think github will allow me without that **)
Intw - how many commits have you done?
Me - ** what kinda qust is this ** well,... Yeah... Umm.. A lot! 🙄
Intw - how much is a lot for you?
Me - umm... Well... A lot lot... So many... I mean a lot of... **Long pause** .... You see, I'm a commitment type of guy. ** Wtf did i just say?**
Intw - Whattt!! Then he laughed.
... and I used to think that my days of embarrassing interviews are over. I'm not going to that company doesn't matter what happens. Shitt 😐10 -

Fuck China.
Fuck the U.S. government.
Fuck the UK and Australia and all the other governments for taking advantage of the crisis of the last two years to get more power and money for their elites.
Fuck them all for starting COVID with their unsanctioned and unethical “gain of function” lab experiments and creating so much chaos that nobody really has a chance anymore at living the life they had dreamed of or so carefully planned for.
Fuck them for the out of control spending and money printing and inflation and even messing around with trying to regulate and tax crypto so we don’t have any kind of escape valve to live a normal, happy life.
Because of them, I can’t even enjoy my time off work. Even if I could plan a vacation that wouldn’t have to be canceled due to an outbreak or resultant supply chain issues, I can’t travel without severe restrictions that make it miserable and not worth the trouble.
Fuck them for making everyone into stupid monkeys fighting over opinions about data that is incomplete, misunderstood, misrepresented, or downright fixed toward a specific pharma-fascist authoritarian outcome.
And fuck them especially for being hypocrites and going to parties and generally not following their own rules they made for us when they think we’re not watching, and then persecuting and prosecuting us when we dare do the same.
Fuck ‘em all. I’m so done.20 -
Come to think of it, Java really reminds me of fidget spinners.
A lot of people love it.
A lot of people hate it.
And then there's me who just doesn't give a fuck.3 -
If programming languages had honest slogans, what would they be?
C: If you want a horse, make sure you feed it, clean it and secure it yourself. No warranties.
C++: If you want a horse, you need to buy a circus along with it.
Java: Before you buy a horse - buy a piece of land, build a house in that land, build a barn beside the house & if you are not bankrupt yet, buy the horse and then put the horse in the barn.
C#: You don’t want a horse, but Microsoft wants you to have a horse. Now it’s up to you if you want Microsoft or not.
Swift: Don’t buy an overpriced Unicorn if all you wanted was a horse.
JavaScript: If you want to buy a horse & confidently ride it, make sure you read a book named "You don't know horse".
PHP: After enough optimization, your horse can compete the top most horses in the world; but deep down, you'll always know it's an ass.
Hack: Let's face it, even if you take the ass from the ass lovers and give them back a horse in exchange, not many will ride it.
Ruby: If you want a horse, make sure you ride it on top of rail roads, even if the horse can't run fast on rails.
Python: Don't ride your horse and eat your sandwich on the same line, until you indent it on the next line.
Bash: Your horse may shit everywhere, but at least it gets the job done.
R: You are the horse. R will ride you.
Got this from Quora.

Guys, unlike a lot of fresh and volatile developers here, i don't get angry at a lot of stuff
but people who play the "I'm older than you" card really really r e a l l y make me upset.4 -
I'M TIRED OF HEARING THAT DEVELOPMENT IS NOT A CREATIVE FIELD! Creativity is emerging new ideas from non-existent ones. It is not confined to pretty designs or well-written copy. Sure, devs are logical problem solvers – but not a single dev will solve those problems the same way. Code is like the paint on our dark-themed canvases and you can see yourself out if you think devs are just robotic coding machines8

Just to add to the chrome memory wastage.
Chrome out consumes everything else running, and Virtual box has a full blown LAMP server running.4 -
Why are so much software developers working on open-source projects, but only so few designers?
A proper UI could increase the userbase a lot. I am quite sure that a lot of projects could benefit from good designers.14 -

You know it's gonna be a good Friday when the dev team takes a work trip to the store to get beer.
Happy Friday everyone!2 -
New discovery: The best way to deal with tight deadlines is to work no more than 4 hours a day, sleep a lot, vibe a lot and using the newfound energy make the client move the deadline.3

There’s no better feeling then doing a full server rebuild, modifying several projects heavily to be portable and keep working under new infrastructure and loosing access to dependent systems.
Migrating everything across, firing up Apache.... and BAM the fucker just works and ssl labs gives it an A (it was a giant F with multiple vulnerabilities yesterday on the old server)7 -
i came to workspace, my boss said:
"wtf are you doing at here?
u know, we got new big project!!"
and continued:
"why you wasting your time by coming here? and why you are not drunk already?!!"4 -
Just had a customer warn me he has "made" a lot of people, but also "broken" a lot of people... Okay then!5

Uno Questione:
I "Bought" a copy of O'reilly's Learning Python. How much of the 1200 page monster is actually necessary/good learning material? Anyway, have a snek.2 -
It's the start of my career - I got an exciting internship offer. There is a lot of work though. I must say, devRant is helping a lot ;-)

self-appointed managers during daily :
SAM : a lot of meetings
SAM : a lot of code review
SAM : a lot of team management
Actual manager : But on what task have you been working?
SAM : a lot of meetings2 -
Not only coding, but studying Computer Science has changed a lot in my life. For example, learning about CPU scheduling algorithms made me manage time for my personal tasks a lot better. Earlier I used to waste a lot of time by doing tasks in out of sync order. Also coding made me realize how dumb most people are!3
-
Thanks a lot guys! You are really awesome! :')
I promise (in a non-js way) I will use that stressball and take a lot of care with it.
Thanks to all the 203 cool devs that ++ my rant!! -
I still wonder why people go to programming classes thinking a dev is paid a lot. Not all devs are paid a lot and it takes passion and hard work to be a good dev. Don't just go there for the money. You'll regret wasting your life.4

"The word ‘tokenizer’ makes a lot more sense, but ‘lexer’ is so much fun to say that I use it anyway."
No wonders people think a lot of programming subjects are intimidating.3 -
When you put a lot of time and effort into writing intricate code, and after a lot of work, the finished project is a beutiful creation.3
-
I won't talk shit about frameworks and libraries anymore, tried to make mine myself and it's damn hard, needs to pour a lot of time in the making, a lot of research, etc.5
-
Learned basic Java syntax and created an Android app by reading a lot of posts on stackoverflow
Also a lot of trial and error... -
When you set up a process and find out a co-worker has been ignoring said process for weeks resulting in a lot of the wrong computers being replaced with new ones and leaving a lot of old computers out in the wild.

Why you would sell your company to Microsoft too!
1. Your company is so succesful, the valuation is so high, only a handful of companies could buy it.
2. Running a company takes a shit load of energy, and most normal people hope to relax at one point in their life.
3. People at the head of major international companies are not normal humans. They like do over work and they have one goal. Be number 1.
So good successful people sell to evil and more succesful people.
And when i say evil, i really just mean that being number 1 is more important than ethics.
Edit: spelling.7 -
the coolest project was mine: a dynamic DNS like dyndns, wrote in scala, an API layer in ruby and a lot of sysadmin stuff like ospf any cast. A big technical success, a total financial failure... but I enjoyed and I learned a lot!

Working with acutal BigData. Will be ''promoted'' to a new team where I will work on a system wrote in php+mysql with literal millions of requests and database rows. We are currently seeing server crashes around once a week on peak usage. Stack is a vps 64gb ram server + i dont know how many cpu/ cores. Apache, php, mysql.Best ways to optimise and adapt in this case? Kafka? Rabbitmq?ngnix? More hardware?21

that awesome moment when you get back from holiday and resolve all the issue the team had while you were gone :)5

If you plan to learn a framework, type his name into job search engines to know if there is a lot of demand ... You'll save a lot of time and energy !2

We bought an expensive middleware which helped development speed and stability a lot. Something did not work and after a week I located the bug in the middleware. Support was adequate and the bug got fixed after my report.
I'm not mad at the developers, because bugs happen, and this one was hard to catch, even with tests.
On the other hand I have to explain my boss what took so much time.
It really wasn't my fault, but I also don't want to shame the middleware company, because it will make it harder for me to buy their stuff (and I quite like their products) or even any software at all. -
I'm addicted to world of warships right now😫
Which game you guys plays a lot ?
Used to play cs 1.6 a lot too 😝
Yeah I know 1600 BC Game but it's still really fun😄17 -
Hello to everyone. Im new here , but i heard a lot of great things about dev rant and i hope i will learn a lot of new things and solve a lot of problems i have with your help.5

In 2019 I want to get better at PHP & React & stop being afraid to try & fail! I do a lot of front end work, backend still baffles me a lot. Time to get uncomfortable! 👩🏼💻🤓3

Client be like:
Hello,
could you please restore our database from today's backup?
At a first glance - nothing out of the ordinary. Daily backups are standard...
Until we get the backed up snapshot running.
MySQLDump is somehow... Stuck. It... Doesn't seem to be doing... Like, anything. For ages. Wtf.
So we check the database. Connect, change scheme and... The commandline tool gets stuck, too. Weird.
So a layer lower, we check the datadir and... ls... After also getting stuck for a bit, lists about 500k files O_o
Yea, dumping a database with roughly ~250k tables is not fun. No wonder it takes ages.8 -
First month at the new job and it's alright. Fine. Totally O-K. And you know what? I'm happy with that. Like, happy-in-general happy. Yikes! I've got a good routine going where I actually do stuff that matter to me and I can also see some opportunities on the horizon; a bit like a Choose Your Own Adventure kind of thing. I've also got this thing - a date? - planned with someone I bumped into while running an errand. What the fuck is happening... 😅✌️1

My thumb hurts / is exhausted from lots of typing (phone) and writing (school). Any tipps besides seeing a doctor? (I will if this bug isn't fixed 'till friday or so)2

So I've noticed there's a lot of php hatred here on devRant xD Does anybody know of any modern php communities or forums to join? I've searched for a few but a lot are outdated.22

Just scrolled down my list of rants
I didn't even notice how much I've posted already
I like devrant, a lot2 -
1. Kids school compound while waiting for the kid
2. Stopping the car on the sidewalk during rush hour for a hot fix
3. Parking lot of a marriage
I do this a lot.5 -
i get a lot of anxiety if i didn't push my code or save somewhere remote, especially if i make a lot of changes
is it just me?9 -
Wonder when this will be done... seems it's going to be awhile until i restart my PC... and Windows gets to update...
-
You got it all wrong, it's being a dev that helped me a lot in a lot of domains: organization, logic, basic maths that I kept struggling with for years, and the love to learn new stuff everyday
-
I hate so much when i write a lot of number of lines in my code and when i start the debugger there are a lot of errors...... I Forget to initialize a variable 😑
-
Well can confirm after a second viewing, the new star wars is ok, not great not bad buuuuuuut, it's a lot better the second time if you start looking at the smaller details and realise a lot of new things, overall, 5/101

How to know if someone is C# ninja?
when you read his code you’ll find a lot of Foo<T> , TModel, TKey and a lot of reflection5 -
I’m being taught some network programming, and my friend/teacher is helping me on the project to teach me, and I’m learning a lot but I don’t feel like I’ve personally done a lot.
I mean I’ve debugged and asked questions and make sure I understand what’s happening but I still don’t feel like I’ve done a lot. :/5 -
Hey guys!
I have a question
When I'm coding sometimes I get sick
I mean this is getting me when I'm worried if the deadline coming day after day, I get nausea a lot
By a lot I mean a lot
I can't even look at my computer screen or even touch the keyboard
Is it only me or it's normal ?!!
I think it's stress13 -
I started writing my own programming language. It resembles LISP a lot but doesn't have a lot of features. It works and I learned a lot by creating it, but I wish I had the motivation to make it a useful language.1
-
A lot of people listen to music while coding, so do I. But what do you listen to? I listen to a lot of Linkin Park and Fall out Boy.7

Dan Abramov
He more or less invented React? Or at least he's made a lot of improvements to its state management functionality. He offers to have lunch with random people on Twitter. He probably knows a lot and reads a lot. He seems like a cool down-to-earth dude.4 -
What is the best laptop for development?
Especially if you work a lot with virtualization, containers, the cloud, and a lot of systems programming. And you like to simulate a lot of distributed environments on locally?3 -
I have 5 months working on a project that I was assigned and I have already worked with React with Redux, Sagas, Reselect, React Native, Jest, Protractor and PHP.2
-
Gotta love recruiters who add you on LinkedIn with a great opportunity to work for a lot less and a lot harder than your current job on a position not even relevant to your work.
-
The boss that had a positive impact on me was the one who was honest about the realities of our workplace. To some, his talks with me might come off as gossip. There’s some truth to that, but ultimately he was just doing me a favor. I think he also just needed someone to vent to since our roles were largely isolated from other colleagues. I appreciated not having the wool pulled over my eyes. He helped me understand the politics of our industry, like salaries and promotions.

Get a good deal with a coffee suplier, you will neeed a lot but a lot of coffee to keep working litle those humans do.1

Does anyone have a good tutorial on how to get Oracle database working on a Linux distro preferably fedora? Any help is appreciated3
-
Very specific for r, but Hadley Wickham wrote tons of stuff about how to build packages and has inspired me a lot. He uses a lot clean code practices and writes very clearly.
-
The mind of The Flash. You know, able to think quickly and fast. Then I can solve a lot problems in a nick of time, or learn a new concept or language quickly.
Yeah, that'll help me a lot.1 -
I improved a lot as a dev when I looked at code I'd written and compiled. You can learn a lot from looking hiw your habits and style affect the overall program.
-
Haskell would say from its heart:
People who don’t talk about me, don’t know me.
People who talk a lot about me a lot, don’t know me as well.1 -
Lockdown has got me reading a lot of books. Books about business or startups are a lot faster for me to read. It’s like reading a story book and I’m done in a week. But reading technical books (like I’m currently reading SICP aka wizard book) is a lot more heavy duty mental work. Y’all got any pointers for me about this?2
-
Except for meeting good people and getting a lot of time to do my own stuff, I didn't get anything from the University. Yes, grades suffered. But who gives a fuck about them? And Coursera helped a lot. So did YouTube, edX, Udacity, etc.
