3 years ago, when I was 12, I told my family that I started programming and that it was my passion. My mum wasn't interested too much about it, but my dad was, and he encouraged me. He told me that he wanted me to become a great programmer.
He died about one year ago, and I stopped coding because I felt bad; every time I opened my IDE I couldn't type anything.
Idk why, some weeks ago I reinstalled devRant, and, idk why (again), I instantly felt good. Maybe because I understood a lot of people had my same passion.
Two days ago, I finally wrote new lines of code.
❤ you guys.18 -
"Got a cool idea! Need to check if it is possible. "
*Proceeds to do some research on the internet*
"Oh great! A thread about it from two years ago! It must have the solution there!"

Spent a good 7 minutes wondering what 18. Ago was in a date field.
Minutes ago?
Hours ago?
Days ago?
Turns out my browser was set to Spanish and it's the short format for 18 August....
I guess it's been a long week.1 -

Client, two months ago: "Where is the new and complicated custom software?! We needed this a week ago!"
Also client three weeks after delivery: "We still don't have time to test the new and complicated custom software. You'll have to wait for payment a little longer."6 -
Came across this gem a few months ago ago. The only thing I can think of is the recruiter had his favorite pornsearch phrase in his clipboard manager and hit the wrong hotkey.7

I'm in my second call from hell today. Passed off first to a teammate to run a meeting. First one started 10 hours ago, this started 5 hours ago. Neither are related. Neither show signs of resolving.
Other teammate is on the same call that started 2 days ago.

Usually when you ask "I have a problem with service X, who wrote it?".
The answer is "Y wrote it but he left the company XYZ years ago".
In company I currently work the the answer is "Oh yes X wrote it 20 years ago, go ask him"11 -

Was wondering when the stickers would come in when low and behold, my wife and I were packing up for a move and the stickers were just there in my sock/underwear drawer...
Confused as all hell I ask my wife, "Did you put these here?"
Turns out the letter arrived ages ago and she wanted to surprise me by opening it up and hide the stickers!
I mostly wear sandals so I had no need for socks and never moved them around to find the stickers underneath...
So here they are and thank you @dfox and @trogus for making this awesome community!!!devrant big thank you! _stickers arrived @trogus wife is a cruel prankster apparently forever ago @dfox6 -

Had a guy test an iOS app for me several months ago. Couple of days ago he messages me asking me if I can give him my code because and I quote...
"I'd like to create the same app"
I (as politely as possible) told him no & why.3 -
Story time!
I moved from React Dev to fullstack like halve a year ago. Three months ago I became project lead and now I will start to become a team lead.
Holy shit I'm growing fast2 -
A year ago I posted on here about me going to an interview for my first co-op position.
It's been a year now, and I was hired full time as an associate software engineer a few months ago, while still going to school. I'd say that interview a year ago worked out for me.2 -
wow, to think i joined devRant 3 years ago when i was fourteen
that was so long ago i used to think the phrase "calm your titties" was funny8 -
Rediscovering the wonderful Devrant community and reading through old rants. So much fun to see where I was just a few years ago and where I am now. Feels like a lifetime ago. Glad to be back!1

A question here reminded me of how websites were made long ago. Frames! Remember those little jewels? <frameset> and <iframe>, I still remember them. Man, even then it felt terribly wrong to use them. I remember using them to create web pages with header and side bar.
The only alternative was using <tables>, which, well, we know how they ended up. Frames today have been silently forgotten, but tables have been loudly hated for many years!
Ahhh, those were the times. So much has happened since then.
(Is "website" still a word today, btw?)7 -
This moment you find a library/software on GitHub which actually does exactly what you looked for/tried to implement by yourself... Then you notice the last commit was in 2010 and there are 3000 open issues... Not a single one contains a response... the typical github repository...6

Pm: Hey we need you to add this feature to client ABC and we need it in 3 weeks.

Me(inside): Really you could give me some information about this 3 weeks ago. Even 2 weeks ago would have been find. AHHHHHHHHHHH!😡😡😡😤.2 -

Powershell. Using classes. Can't create class libraries using regular .ps1 files (this way this **sort** of work). Using modules then. Can't easily refresh modules cache after any change to a class. Need restarting powrshell each time. Looking for more information. The issue is open since 2016 (just after the release of PS 5 that introduced classes). Once again, a Microsoft product turns out to be shiny at the beginning, but rusty when you go beyond the surface. Classes seem to be second class citizens in powershell. I feel frustrated and I would like to put pressure on microsoft but nobody seems to care. I'm stuck.3

I learned C with a K&R copy a friend gave me years ago. Now at University we in CompSci get taught in Python the first year and Java next while the engineers start with C and (I'm guessing) move on to assembly later on.
This friend comes to me all worried because he has to submit the next day a working Reversi game for the console written in C. Turns out the game was divided among two labs and he failed to submit the first one.
The guy is smart but once a week or so, when we met to smoke a joint and relax with some other friends, he was always talking about how he would prefer something like law but that would be bad business back in Egypt.
Back to the game, I get completely into it. First hour checking all the instructions he was given, then reviewing the code he wrote and copied from Internet. We decide start from scratch since he doesn't really get what the code he copied do. It took us 10 hours only stopping to eat but we get all the specifications of both labs perfectly.
A week after that he comes to me: "my TA said your code is the ugliest shit he's ever seen but he gave me a perfect score because it passed all the tests". I'm getting better (the courses I'm taking help me a lot) but what really made me happy is that he solved the next lab by himself (Reversi wasn't the first time I helped him, only the first time he was absolutely lost). Now he actually gets excited about coding and even felt confident for his programming final.
No more talking about being a lawyer after those 10 hours, totally worth it.1 -
A home designer ( a.k.a Interior Designer )
Ever since I got my home renovated 5 years ago, I love finding ways to make the houses look and feel better. -
Ran into a problem, that I recalled also having a few years ago. Couldn't recall how I fixed it, but remembered that I struggled finding a solution back then. Got a good forumhit on Google straight away this time, exact same problem. It had one reply, by the initial poster a few days later, saying he found the solution and posting how he fixed it. Great! Love that some people actually post the solution when they find it themselves! Tried registering to post a big "thank you!", but got an "email already registered"-error. Hmm... Were able to login, then realized that the poster was...me, 3 years ago! So I guess "thank me!", then...?
TL;DR:
I almost thanked myself on a 3 year old forum post I didn't realize I had posted myself... -
I got a new keyboard in my office. One hour ago i have been restarted my pc 3 times, because power button is in delete position. One more hour ago, i have returned my old keyboard.3

I just spent 4 (four) hours debugging why my perlin noise used the same gradient for every point. Turns out I forgot to assign the seed for the random generator so it defaulted to 0. (I seed it every round with the map seed and coordinates so I don't have to store anything for visited regions)

I've a collection of ViewModels:
ViewModelCollection
but there is a specialized version for model based viewmodels:
ModelBasedViewModelCollection
and from this I derived a furtherly specialized version that handles deferred adds:
ModelBasedViewModelCollectionWithDeferredAdd.
Now this is ridicously long. How would you abbreviate this?
This is the kind of questions that, if posted on stackoverflow, cause you to be downvoted to death. Maybe here we can discuss a little bit without me being banned right away :-)7 -
Even if Microsoft has done considerably steps forward in recent years with dotnet core being an open source platform, it still retains a bit of its microsoftian dna. Let me make an example. Start a new test project with xUnit. It doesn't log to console. Decide to use the standard Microsoft.Extensions.Logging that should be the new, performant way of logging. It comes with 4 providers and **it doesn't log on file system**. Bottom line: all the complexity of a complex stack without the solution you were looking at the beginning. Resorting to thirdy party tools to do the job (serilog).2

can't take this sh1t anymore, will start updating my CV today.
I have to steer wheels on this shitty php-related task with testing suites with latest guides written in 2014, code base of that suite got a shitton of changes.
When referring to original documentation and example that is not working and gives me loads of errors, community pricks just saying something like: don't use 6 year old tutorials!!! well, that is the latest I could find, so yeah -> basically go fuck yourself situation!
went alive from 1st part as I managed to make some hacky clusterfuck that works. now i had to switch library that has no documentation at all, has shitton of options and lattest update is like from 3 years ago, library that is connected had some breaking changes lately so to no surprise I can't get this shit to work!
Is whole php ecosystem just made of folks who simply doesn't give a fuck and latest knowledge update they had is like 4 years ago?
ofc I am excluding laravel community in this!2 -
Could someone explain to this old fart what the kiki and bouba thing I keep seeing around the place is all about? Is it something to do with Köhler's work, or just something the urban dictionary hasn't yet catalogued?5

this week: 1 metric still red but covered with a post it note -

Ok, we were troubleshooting a network connection problem. My boss told me: use fping, a small command line utility that gives you a timestamped ping. We can then check when did the connection go down. Ok. Since I've always advocated the importance of knowing advanced scripting tools, i tried to do it with powershell. I've been playing with Test-Connection for an hour to try to get not only the timestamp when the connection is ok, but the timestamp when the connection is down. Don't want to go into details. I've just a question. A solution that allows you to do such an easy task in say 20 lines of code is the proof that the system works or that it doesn't work? To make long story short, now i'm downloading fiping.6

I don't know if this is just YouTube or this is a feature, but there is a time bug with YouTube. Every video that is >1 week old (and younger than 2 weeks) will still using the format "... days ago" instead of "1 week ago" like how it is intended.
For example, this video is >1 week old, which means that it should show the "1 week ago", but instead, it still shows "12 days ago".9 -
When you add a new file to a project, Visual Studio shows only the types that it thinks are relevant.
It's based on a guid in the .csproj file. Yes, a guid.
A magic number, only longer.
Changed to another one that allows me to add the files, added the files, restored previous number. Project unloadable, restored with git, lost several hours of work. If only I committed before trying this. Lesson learned. Trust git. Never trust Visual Studio.3 -
Visual Studio. Slow cheetah plugin allows you to transform your app.config so to have different files for release and build. yes, because with Visual Studio 2017 we need a third-party tool to do that. Are there any vs-native alternatives? Yes. Are they good? So and so. That's what I think, but slowcheetah has 300k downloads, so many people seem to be using it.1

I've a classic class in C#: RelayCommand. It's just a general purpose ICommand implementation. I want to use a dedicated namespace for it. I cannot use MyCompany.RelayCommand because using the same-class-name as namespace causes problems. What do you suggest?2

I've created a folder called 'config' in my c# applicaiton. (VS2017). It considers it a 'hidden' folder, like obj and bin. Still it works. Am i doing something illegal? That is, Visual Studio wants to handle the content of 'config' directly?4
