A client refused to pay for a hybrid mobile app because he said that he only needed the android version.
After publishing the app he asked if we could submit it on the Apple store because he now wanted the iOS version as well.11 -

--- New API allows developers to update Android Apps while using them ---
Today, at the Android Dev Summit, Google announced a new API which allows developers to update an app while using it.
Until now, you were forced to close the app and were locked out of it until the update has finished.
This new API adds two different options:
1.) A Full-Screen experience which locks the user out of the app which should be used for critical updates when you expect the user to wait for the update to be applied immediately. This option is very similar to how the update flow worked until now.
2.) A flexible update so users can keep using the app while it's updating. Google also said that you can completely customize the update flow so it feels like part of your app!
For now, the API is only available for early-access partners, but it will be released for everyone soon!

I had an intern in for VBA programming on day one they realized that they were in need of an android dev, so the boss came to me and asked if I had any experience with android. I replied with yes a little, I had begun multiple projects but never finished only one of them. After 4 weeks of developing I presented my progress a pretty ugly but working app, after the meeting the boss told me that a other team of devs were building the same app but didn't made any progress in 1.5 years.
Ps: sry 4 my English.4 -
After continuously trying to approve my Unity app on app store. I was finally able to do it in just 6 months. Thanks to the 'robust and fast' process of Apple.
If only Android could learn from from them. They took only an hour.4 -
I've recently red a blog post stating 'Google leaves x Million Android devices vulnerable to a new Exploit'
I don't really sympathize with Google, but it's simply the wrong message... It should be more like FUCK VENDORS, WHO WON'T SUPPLY UPDATES TO DEVICES OLDER THAN 1.5 YEARS
Seriously, it's them who make you stuck on outdated OS versions... Just imagine you could only install Windows Vista on your 2014 Lenovo ThinkPad, because it's considered outdated...
FUCK VENDORS (again, just in case)8 -
So this was only a few weeks ago. A client told us to turn our Android/iOS app into an app compatible with his phone - it needed to work online/offline and it needed to be able to take photographs. We didn't have much to go on but after a few calls we figured out he was using a very old Nokia (Snake era) that didn't even have a camera.
The hardest part was getting him to understand why we couldn't make the app.7 -
"Your resumé looks really good. We would really like to hire you. But you need to do this completly job unrelated test/coding challenge first."

*Scrolls*
"Implement algorithm xyz in Go lang"
*Closes test and breaks something*

"OK, how much time will i need to plan for it?"
"Our lead dev decided to make it small so its only 4-5 days."

What is it with all this stupid hiring test these days? And what do these recruiter think?8 -

[Senior developer] * drops on the floor in an attempt to hide his laughter *2 -
> Gradle build finished in 32 seconds
As if you did, fucking cunt. I've only watched half an anime episode and commented here and there in the meantime. Surely that'd be 30 seconds. Perhaps Gradle, you could've taken all that extra time to learn how to fucking count.
Android development, what hell am I getting myself into...5 -
I am a student but I make Android apps and have them up on Play Store (only 2 different apps), and they bring in little money. 😅13

devRant++ badges and extended rants and comments editing time (up to 30 mins for subscribers) are available also on Windows 10.
To subscribe you still need (I hope only for now) the official Android or iOS app.
But if someone is using also the PC Windows 10 version maybe is happy to see that. 😉

When will Linux shall triumph over the desktop market?
I hate to see games and software being developed only for Winblows and MacPrison.
Why don't some company make a normie-friendly distro and heavily support it, same as Google did with Android, but for desktops?11 -
I got a callback for mobile app development, I told them I had only worked in Android. When I got to the actual interview, "ok, your Resume and all is fine and all, but we are actually looking for an iOS developer" I stood up and walked out. I mean what in the name of holy fucking hell were you thinking you miserable son of a bitch.3

Several rants ago I promised to drop a bombshell about Android. What took me so long was my research.
I wanted to measure the extent of Google’s background data mining. I put Android at a significant disadvantage — it was Redmi 6, a device with a 5-year-old half-dead battery that was heavily used by my partner. The only change was me installing Lineage OS + microG — a private, degoogled combo that has no quality of life ramifications. Google Play Store opens, apps download. MicroG emulates Google Play Services — maps, banking and other Play Services-dependent apps work flawlessly. This made a huge difference.
Before degoogling, this phone lasted one day tops on standby. Now, with Wi-Fi connection enabled, apps auto-update working (one game I had installed auto-updated during the test), and no battery saver engaged, I was able to pull ELEVEN DAYS on full charge. Battery saver promised even more uptime, but I considered that cheating.
Modern phones have modern screens that drain battery quickly. Yet, they also have 4000+ mAh batteries. If your Android smartphone performs worse than mine in a test like this that doesn't use screen, kiss your privacy goodbye.24 -
Yahoo, Kotlin is the first class language for android. So no more fucking Java codes. No more 100 lines for basic configurations. No more null pointer exceptions.
Only beautiful code and fun.14 -

When you develop and test your (Android) app on lower end devices, thinking that if it works on low end devices, it will work on higher end devices too.
And you get crash reports from the higher end (huh! Flagship grade) devices only.3 -

Why don't people like Java? With only a year of AP comp sci for experience, I don't know enough about it to say I do or don't like it. But it's widely used, and is an official language of Android. Are the people hating on Java just people that don't use it? Or is there something about Java that people just genuinely despise?35
-
First rant.
Why do people need to bother about my phone? I have a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 and I am perfectly ok with it. You don't have to shove your iPhone to my face and tell me to try iOS. Acting like iOS is the only shit matters. I am perfectly ok with my 230 SGD phone, the customisability of Android and not having to worry about my credit bills.19 -
Just spent an hour trying to fix a bug on my Xamarin app that only affected the android project. Finally decided to Google it and figured out it's a Xamarin bug. FUCK YOU XAMARIN GO FUCK YOURSELF WITH A BROOMSTICK WITH NO LUBE.7

We needed a design for our Android and iOS App, everything should be done by an award-winning design agency. What we received was only a design for iPhone X. Only mockups as PDF, no icons, nothing. So we requested the Android design and an iPhone 8 one including icons, color codes and whatnot.
1 FUCKING MONTH LATER we got the new designs... They are all the FUCKING SAME DESIGN where some mockups were "displayed" on an android phone, and some on an iPhone. Still no icons though.
3 weeks pass and we geht FUCKING sketch files, to extract the shit ourselves. Thank you for nothing.
It took again nearly 3 month to get a "proper" Android design and all the assets. You could clearly see, that they never did anything for Android but well, we had to work with it. Award-winning design agancy my ass.5 -
Is it only me who gets screwed up by such silly little things?

3) voting option for selecting king/queen of the night.
Oh and the event is in next two weeks. You can just modify the Facebook and the instagram app right?
Speechless....2 -
Okay this is it; FUCK java on android. You need so many fucking workarounds, its insane. Im tryna merge to bmps together, one on top, and the helper class is at 400 lines already and its only kinda working. If you gonna abstract things away, then fucking abstract them well (ocaml) or not at all (c).16

Bought an ebook that turned out to be a .DRM file
...that only worked with that publisher's Android app
......that only works with Android versions < 6.0 (I use Android 9)
Tried it anyway, which among incompatibility issues, was raising a certificate error. I contacted the publisher about it
..."sorry, the author did not give us permission to sell this. You can have your money back"
What
Why are you even advertising it on your website as a publisher then??7 -
Fuck Android Oreo and everyone who thought that the following ideas are useful:
- xy app is running in the background notification, which can't be disabled
- xy app is overlaying other apps, click here if you wish to disable it. But you can't disable the notification, you can only disable the app.
- the un-zeroable data limit. It can't be disabled, you can only set it to a retarded high number to avoid annoying notifications
Go suck a veiny one Android devs. Fucking cunt faces.13 -

Reinstalling Android Studio.
It takes a while.
So you take a rest, exercise a little. Sure, it will installed when you'll come back ready to throw yourself into deep work, with fresh energy.
You come back.
There is a pop up: Do you want to send usage data to google ? Nothing installed yet.
Only Yes/No option. Where is the "Fuck you" option?12 -
Android docs suck so hard 😇
Google sucks so hard at making APIs 😄
Wraps everything in libraries, whose only purpose is to hide their incompetence 😛13 -
I once had to deal with GoDaddy customer support telling me their servers only support putty for SSH.
Well, fuck you! I use Linux and I SSH with a single command in terminal, no doubt putty is great but get your senses straight that putty is not the only way to SSH when you are being customer support for a tech company, don't just fucking recite a phrase list. Besides, they should understand Windows with putty is not the only way to SSH into servers, juicessh via Android, openssh via Linux, etc...
*btw, before you all rant about me buying from GoDaddy, I was lead dev for a startup few years back and they had already bought it from GoDaddy. Ofcourse they also provide free offers along with an order, which often includes email addresses, annoying support, gut-wrenching quality of service access...1 -
Everytime I open Android Studio for the first time. I look at my code and I'm like "What is this? What was I thinking?". But 30 minutes later I'm so deep into the code I'm almost in a trance. Tell me I'm not the only one.5

More like a sub company/department inside a company: Android.
I still use it as my main driver, but every time I try to get back into development with it(did it professionally for 2 years nearing on 3 and was a lead Android dev, mind you not necessarily by merit....) I end up hating everything about it.
The tooling is meh, the API is hideous and even with the addition of Kotlin, which I do find a nicer language over Java I still dislike it. The ammount of shit needed to make something as simple as store data, manage fragments, integrate with the NDK, make JSON API calls or even shake motions is just ludicrous and counter intuitive. I can see why people would hate Java based on Android, a language that I generally love and defend.
I firmly believe that people extend frameworks or tooling for 2 reasons only:
1 the stack is so awesome that you just want to create packages and libraries to extend the functionality of a powerful environment, like gems for Ruby, python packages, Node packages, php composer, nuget etc
2 the stack is so fucking hideous that people need to fix shit: the entire android square utility framework, butterknife, flutter, react native, codenameone, etc etc
The case with Android is the second. I have not met a professional Android developer that completely likes everything about Android, but will seldom find people that HATE other frameworks or environments.
Android it is for me. Still my daily driver and I love every Android phone I have ever owned. It just makes me feel lots of more compassion for fellow Android devs.4 -
I work in a bitcoin startup , my fucking boss really wants everyone to use ubuntu because of security and all , the bad thing is i am the only guy who knows how to install and deal with it , so when any one joins or has some problem he always bugs me and the thing is i am an android developer not a sys admin and now he fucking want to get 2 factor in ubuntu desktops when they log in16

Slack's android app crashes if I hold a message to put my emoji reaction on it.
A Microsoft Teams call link needs to be opened in 4-5 tabs only one of which works and actually lets you join the call.
Droidcam's Ubuntu client suddenly stops working even when you're using a wired connection instead of WiFi.
Modern software is in the gutter. Change my mind.4 -
Oh my motherfucking God...
How the fuck can a dumb IDE be so fucking slow? I entered the office at 8:15. And I am still unable to checkout a motherfucking previous version of an android app in git and get Android studio to build it, because the fucking gradle is so damn slow it freezes the GUI. WHAT. THE. FUCK. Android studio get you shit together and maybe, just maybe don't be such a dick!!!
You need 5 min to open that project and another 10 to build it ONLY FOR ME TO REALIZE THAT I HAVE TO REPEAT THAT WHOLE PROCEDURE BECAUSE I NEED A DIFFERENT APP VERSION FROM THE GIT REPO FUCK YOU YOU SHITFACED STUPID COCKSUCKING CUNT, SHIT FUCK ARRRRGH!!!
Sincerely,
Me.
Edit: now it's 9:35 btw6 -
I decided to quit my job. I was supposedly hired as an Android developer, but during the past few months I found myself doing everything except Android development: SQL scritps, frontend web development, backend web development, RESTful API's, DBA, release engineering... There's nothig wrong about being versatile, it's actually fun, but I wasn't doing what I really wanted to do and, most importantly, the manager didn't appreciate the fact that I was doing things that I'm not supposed to do, and not only that, I was doing it just as good as some full time web devs who do nothing but web development in the company. I'm pissed off. They probably believe the next Android dev they hire will do all the shit I was doing, accepting the same pay. Fuck them.2

fuck google! fuck the people updating the android OS! fuck android!
first you guys removed the feature to connect wifi using WPS and then promised to bring it back but instead brought a completely different feature
then you make all the clipboard manager apps obsolete. only keyboard apps can be clipboard manager otherwise the rest of them are screwed.
app needs my location permission just so that it can turn on my wifi! wtf!
app needs bluetooth, wifi & location just so that it can send data from one device to another device offline? why bluetooth? are we going back to 1970s?
fuck you google! fuck android!
I really wish some other companies fork it and removes all the clutters and makes it better.19 -
Okay, I usually don't rant about Windows.
But why the flying fuck does it automatically pick a driver for RNDIS5 for a RNDIS6 device (USB tethering on Android devices)? It's hanging many parts of the systems until I change it to the right driver (which is not shown as compatible and warned against whilst being the only one that works). Seriously, I usually never have problems with Windows, but this is the only thing that annoys the fuck out of me with it.6 -

Had a really slow Android programmer at my last job.
It took him over two weeks to add a slider to a screen, the boss comes over and asks why he isn't finished. The coder responded: I'm sorry! I'm bad at using the keyboard!

I don't get it.
I tried Kotlin on Android just for fun, and it doesn't support binary data handling, not even unsigned types until the newest version. Java suffers from the same disease.
How does one parse and process binary data streams on such a high end system? Not everything is highlevel XML or JSON today.
And it's not only an Android issue.
Python has some support for binary data, and it's powerful, but not comfortable.
I tried Ruby, Groovy, TCL, Perl and Lua, and only Lua let's you access data directly without unnecessary overhead.
C# is also akward when it comes to data types less than the processer register width.
How hard can it be to access and manipulate data in its natural and purest form?
Why do the so called modern programming language ignore this simple aspect that is needed on an everyday basis?11 -

I was hired to make a little app, alone, for iOS, Android and I had to code the server and the database. At first it was only à little app on Android and I had to do it in one month and go back school after.
Finally, the client was upset that the app was buggy and asked me to stop school because it was my duty because he paid me1 -
When i first got introduced to programming in highschool, java was the only thing offered. years later i picked up java again to throw together my first project. a 100 lvl java android phone game on my own. needless to say lol it was my utter failure! i remember my phone acting like it was on heroin constantly after install lol fuck that game

First experience with Android: our professor of Software Engineering gave us a project about building an app for University indoor geolocation using BLE beacons.

My PM wants to take the current website, which really sucks on mobile (one of the worst mobile viewports I have seen) and put in an iOS/Android app.
So basically he wants an iOS/Android app which contains only 1 activity/viewcontroller which contains a webview...
My goodness...
Tried to talk him out of it, but I can't even get him to consider using a hybrid framework.
He doesn't appear to care very much about performance of the app neither does the PM care much about UX.
What the PM does care about is this thing called : ONE CODEBASE.
Any tips how I can try to persuade him to atleast consider a hybrid framework? Any requirements that will force the PM to abandon this stupid idea are extremly welcome!14 -
I need a project. I am on holidays, I don't have a computer at hand and can only code small things on my phone, mainly in python... Sad thing is I don't have any idea what to code.

P.S: if anyone has a working way to use Node.js on Android, I'd be glad to take it :)13 -
Xiaomi's bootloader unlock procedure is So. Fucking. Tedious. I have no words... oh wait, I do. HIDING THE PERMISSION BEHIND A HUNDRED DEVICE-SIDE SWITCHES WON'T MAKE IT ANY SAFER, IT WILL ONLY MAKE MODDERS ANGRY. Why do you need a third switch besides OEM unlock and USB debugging anyway? If I toggled OEM unlock it's obvious what I'm trying to do and every other option should change to comply with that intent. Don't roll your own Android if you know fuckall about UX.9

The only technology that has updates more than microsoft windows--> android studio...Like the dev team gets a eureka moment everyday1

Give up. Share Target API is already on Android, even in garbage like Samsung Internet. Desktop native apps are already history, mobile apps are sure to follow. Led by Apple Silicon, we will add JS-specific hardware to the CPUs and conquer the world. JavaScript will be the only language, with an exception being C and Lisp.9
-
It only took me a day to figure out how to get an overflow button on Android to show up. Can you tell I'm new?2
-
Follow up to previous rant:
Now after I realised that I'm a stupid motherfucker, today was release day. Or so it was planned.
Because turned out my colleagues/supervisors didn't tell me to test the app on Android 6 devices and I was sure that if it ran on the device they gave me (which I assumed was the only device of our clients) it'd be sufficient.
Now it was tested on an android 6 device and crashed constantly.
Wow... I mean... Just wow... Now because I don't have a working android 6 device (a colleague of mine is on vacation and locked our development devices for a different app into a drawer) I have to get the emulator working which took me about 2 hours because that dumb shit face of a laptop first didn't have the android-sdk-root set (took me a good hour to realise) and then the kernel for the avds was missing.
Also: windows updates.
FUUUUUUUUUUUU....
(PS: yeah I should have tested it on various devices and made sure it worked on at least most of them without being told so. Another example for my stupidity.)
EDIT: Now I don't have enough disc space for the kernel I need to install. Absofuckingfantastic1 -

Android development is unnecessarily complex. To the core. Rant #371651681324
Only being few months in to android development, I can say that using too many functions and classes for doing something silly is very illogical. I mean -
Livedata, think about it, if some data is shown on the UI, it must mean the UI be updated instantly on data change, but the concept of Livedata was introduced only few years back.Which again, needs an observer and we actually have to ask it to observe changes.
Android development is a mess. More and more updates to the architecture and code is to cover up the problems that shouldn't have existed in the first place. A simple Spinner with custom object will require more time in stackoverflow rather than actual coding. Very counter-intuitive, inefficient, time-consuming and exhaustive.4 -
I was kinda proud, when I released a new test version of my android app, since I had a couple of new features and bug fixes. As soon as I told a friend of mine about it he found a error that has never occured before in the method. This only happens in the release build. Why does it happen? BECAUSE SOME DAMM VIEWS WANT TO BE INITIALIZED AFTER DAMM THE APP HAS BEEN PAUSED/MINIMIZED1

I was developing an Android app during college training. I made the app in three days, actually, three nights.
Three consecutive nights of only coding had its toll on me. I got burned out.
I couldn't even look at my laptop. Every code I looked made me want to throw up. That's how much burned out I was.
Well, after three more days, the feelings of throwing up receded, and I was back on track.
This was my second worst burned out experience. -
So I was looking for a way to easily take android screenshots in a lossless image format, since my OEM only does jpeg.
Didn't want to install another adware and wound up with the adb shell screencap command since I need the pictures on my PC anyways.
But instead of a nice one-liner like
adb shell screencap -p > screenshot.png
I need 3 lines in a bash script.
Can we please just end the line ending wars?5 -
I never had a good boss, I've got two of the worst stereotypes of boss :
- the exigeant non-tech thinking he knows tech that asked to make an Android app for 1000€ and forgot to say he wanted an iOS app also
- The typical "fonctionnaire" (don't know if there is an equivalent in English, it's a state worker in France) manager, who thought his work was the only important work, who made me do a work I would have done in two weeks in 6 month1 -
Trying to explain to people why 6GB of RAM on a phone is overkill.
Seriously, you do know your phone can only do one thing at a time right?
And Android still shuts down the app after certain amount of time even if there is enough RAM.16 -
I've had a Xiaomi Mi 8 for a few months now. Although I'm impressed by what I got for the amount I paid (a phone that cost about $250 for 6GB RAM, Snapdragon 845, Android 9 and premium build quality is quite a steal), it definitely comes with a consequence.
MIUI (specifically MIUI 11) is godawful. It is single-handedly the worst Android ROM I've ever used since my shitty Android 2.2 phone back around 2010. If you're gonna buy a Xiaomi phone, plan to install Lineage OS on it (but even that's a pain which I'll explain why later).
- Navigation buttons don't hide while watching a video.
Why? God only knows. The ONLY way to bypass without root this is to use its garbage fullscreen mode with gestures, which is annoying as all hell.
- 2 app info pages?
Yeah, the first one you can access just by going to its disaster of a settings app, apps, manage apps and tap on any one.
The 2nd one you can access through the app info button in any 3rd party launcher. Try this: Download Nova launcher, go to the app drawer, hold on any app and tap "app info", and you'll see the 2nd one.
Basically, instead of modifying Android's FOSS source code, they made a shitty overlay. These people are really ahead of their time.
- Can only set lock screen wallpapers using the stock Gallery app
It's not that big an issue, until it is, when whatever wallpaper app you're using only allows you to set the wallpaper and not download them. I think this is both a fuckup on Xiaomi and (insert wallpaper app name here), but why Xiaomi can't include this basic essential feature that every other Android ROM ever made has is beyond me.
- Theming on MIUI 11 is broken
Why do they even bother having a section to customize the boot animation and status bar when there's not one goddamn theme that supports it? At this point you're only changing the wallpaper and icon pack which you can do on any Android phone ever. Why even bother?
They really, REALLY want to be Apple.
Just look at their phones. They're well designed and got good specs, but they don't even care anymore about being original. The notch and lack of a headphone jack aren't features, they're tremendous fuckups by the dead rotting horse known as Apple that died when Steve Jobs did.
Xiaomi tries to build a walled garden around an inherently customizable OS, and the end result is a warzone of an Android ROM that begs for mercy from its creator. Launchers integrate horribly (Does any power user actually use anything that isn't Nova or Microsoft launcher?), 3rd party themes and customization apps need workarounds, some apps don't work at all. People buy from Xiaomi to get a high end budget Android phone at the price of some ads and data collection, not a shitter iOS wannabe.
They really, REALLY want you to have a sim card
If you don't have a sim card and you're using your phone for dev stuff, you're a 2nd class citizen to Xiaomi. Without one, you can't:
- Install adb through adb
- Write to secure settings
- Unlock your bootloader and get away from this trash Android ROM
What's the point? Are they gonna shadow ban you? Does anyone contact them to unlock their bootloader saying "yeah I wanna use a custom rom to pirate lizard porn and buy drugs"? They made this 1000000000x harder than it needs to be for no reason whatsoever. Oh yeah and you gotta wait like a week or something for them to unlock it. How they fucked up this bad is beyond me.
So yeah. Xiaomi. Great phones, atrocious OS.11 -
My friend is talking to someone else in the computer lab about a project we're working on for class, and they are telling him that we can't build our app in Java because it can only be used for android and web apps 🤦♂️
-
Am I the only one pressing the report problem instead of reply in the Android app?
I'm right handed and report is closest and gets pressed...
Can we do an A/B experiment with switching them? Or maybe a setting?

Craziest deadline: job processing system for a manufacturing company, Android app, live updating web interface, integration with 3 existing systems, custom/new database and workflow... 9 days from concept to prototype. I was the only dev on it.
Yes, the product sucked, and no, I didn't really sleep. -
fucking flutter.
i'm trying to make a simple app. it would be an easier to do both natively.
for fucks sake flutter, add some functionality. flutter recently got out of beta but it's not fucking done. no native webviews, no native push notifications. fuck that.
however, i do have to give credit where credit is due. coming into flutter i expected a different feel of the app on iphone and android. it was exactly the same, and it was smooth too. in that respect, i love flutter.
also guys, i have an app (not finished yet) i built with flutter and i would like some constructive criticism for changing the ui. only android right now though, i can't afford ios.
dictive.app/download6 -
Made my own "devRant" ("inspired hehe") Android app/socialmedia^^
(still in BETA) Not targeting a specific area though. http://stardash.de:4000/
And no not a devRant replacement cuzz its not soo much dev Related :)
Layout has no similarities aT aLl :D
App can only be downloaded on my website cuzz im not 18 yet so i cant publish to the playstore (and also i kinda dislike Google and using anything Google connected in a app e.g. Firebase)
There is a build in update center in the app though.
Server:
My Pc (Linux)
Nodejs with Express
Mysql
App:
Android Studio mostly with Retrofit13 -
Fuck apple, and fuck xcode.
Making and running android app was a breeze.
Making and running ios app was hell.
Expectation : I should have gotten everything I need just by installing xcode and flutter.
Reality : I need to install these from the terminal : xcode command line tools, homebrew, ruby, cocoapods, firebase-cli. Also I need to manually add many stuffs, such as google login url into xcode project settings. Also we can simply test run our app or install to our device, and iphone we owned, we need to register in apple developer program, fill a full form, blah blah blah.
When it comes to android, I only need to register an account much much later, when I want to publish it to the playstore.5 -
Today in office one lady came to me and asked "how to reboot iPhone when it stuck?"
I'm android guy and using iPhone only for Dev purposes. So I never encountered such issues and was a bit confused.
Then I were smoking on the roof with coworker and asked:
- When last time you seen unresponsive android device?
- Hmm... I dunno
- And what about iPhone?
- Yeah, my wife's iPhone 7+ and daughter's iPhone 6 stuck regularly.
We laughed, but wtf?
Then I've tried to remember when Linux or Mac were stuck. Nothing.
Don't start holy war, please. Just noticed that.13 -
Why can’t i permanently turn off Bluetooth on an iPad? I swipe down, tap ‘Bluetooth’ and instead of turning it off permanently like any sane design decision (as in, how Android does it) it decides to only turn it off for a day? Why??? Who wants that??16
-
Am i the only person complaining about Android being a fucking irritating load of bloatware, which you cant escape from. I just cant understand how we are being Okay with such a huge bloated OS which doesnt do any justice to the hardware. Views ?8

Developing on Android and came across an issue that only seemed to be happening on one of our devices.
A fair bit of time was spent trying to figure out why the hell one resource (image) wasn't available even though it was clearly there in the project and was working on all other devices.
Turns out the image in question was in the drawable-v24 folder on accident so of course wasn't working on the one device running Android version 21 🤦 at least it was an easy fix -
UI design android
Back in college we were taught the principle of KISS (Keeping it simple stupid) and experienced it first hand today.Been struggling with a layout design from our designer and had cursed him a lot earlier.
Turns out I only needed few attributes:
android:clipChidren="false"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_gravity="center_horizontal" -
Worst: Spending a week in npm, node, react hell trying to triage a ReactNative iOS/Android app that even the OG dev couldn't fix and FAILING.
This is the only code in like 20 fuckin years that beat me.
Best: Watching the fall of western democracy with a giant shit eating "I told you so" grin.6 -
I swear devRant must use a custom keyboard parameter on android because it is the only place I have aggressive auto correction... I look at half the stuff I posted and it's just filled with broken English 0.o
-
Why is Google so annoying? Download the latest version of Android Studio,, create an empty application from their template, build the empty APK and try to upload it to Google Play. Turns out the template for new app in Android Studio is set to use Experimental SDK, not accepted by Play Console.
Am I the only one who thinks this is dumb and left hand needs to talk to right hand?3 -
Definitely andOTP, my two-factor authentication app for Android: https://github.com/andOTP/andOTP
The only thing cooler will be once I finished to rewrite it from scratch to get rid of the legacy code from before I forked it.6 -
How did I not know there was a devrant website. Literally thought it was only an Android/iPhone app.3

Is anybody using skype on android. Recently it got updated and is bloody useless, can't even share stuff over it anymore. While having a video call, rotating to landscape doesn't work most of the time. This is the only fucking app from MS I am still using, only because of my family.3
-
Has anyone tried the "Connect app" on windows? To be able to screen cast for example android screen to windows.
What in the fucking fuck are those guys in Microsoft smoking? It fucking hijacks your mouse and keyboard with no way to control your PC. Only thing that works to go back to your PC is ctrl+alt+delete. Wanna close it? Alt+F4. No fucking UI except some broken pseudo setting. Srsly it seems like some intern did it. WHAT THE SHIT??1 -
I should invest in Apple again... Google keeps doing things in Android that keep pissing me off.... And probably others too and well the only alternative is iOS...
GOOD JOB... your killing your own brand and ecosystem....23 -
I have been using android studio for almost 3 years now, and I think I only use 0.00342 of the features1

Motorola:
It was the only company which used to provide great budget android smartphone with stock android and regular updates. (ranting this on my Moto G3) But from moto G3, they fucked up with promised android OS upgrade (shitty Lenovo)
Microsoft (for fucking with windows 10):
Still remember that first stable build of windows 10 released in 2015. After the first update they never stopped fucking with user's computer with different bugs. Still I haven't seen any build as stable as first one.1 -
Lets talk about our dream phone!
Here's what mine would be...
Screen: 1440p AMOLED highly saturated screen.
CPU: Snapdragon 845 (Or whatever is on top)
RAM: 4-6 GB
Storage: 16 GB internal OS reserved storage for the OS only but on the side would have 2 slots with the same locking mechanism as the sim tray to hold 2 hot swapable storage or battery modules.
OS: A modular version of stock android (By modular i mean a version of stock android that is designed to be installed on any device)
Speaker: Dual front facing stereo
Ports: 2 usb-c ports on the bottom.
Special features: A portable desktop experience that when plugged into a monitor would give a chromeOS style experience with the phone acting as a touchpad.7 -
Question here - what do you guys think of Kotlin?
Do you also think it'll be sufficient to learn Kotlin and not java to programm for Android?
I just began the transition, it's fun playing around with it, but a friend of mine wants to learn Kotlin to learn Android programming (and not java, he only has java basics).
What's your opinion on all this?12 -
It could just be me, but I feel lime I have an extreme lack of money to pursue projects. I know java really well, but I want to develop android apps. That's fine until you consider the fact that the only computers I have available to me at my house are very old. A gradle build in android studio on my PC takes <10min. So I just really need a better computer which means I need money which means I need a job which is unlikely because not many people hire 15 year olds. In fact, my parents bought a laptop last year for me to use, but my older sister fried the video out component on the motherboard so it needs a new one which is ~$3001
-
Just started an android O development course on Udemy and decided to use my Arch installation (surprisingly Linux was the easiest one to set up) even though the course said Mac or windows only..
But holy fuck does android studio fly on Linux, it's so fast compared to being run on the same machine under windows...3 -
can anyone guess who said the following?
"Titanium allows us to launch new features really quickly and have an immediate impact. For example, we added an avatar builder with millions of configuration options, yet it only required a few lines of code to be different between iOS and Android."8 -
I developed an Android app that authenticates users via HTTP. Because it's an internal use app for employees only, we are in charge of unsubscribe the users that have access to the app in case they leave the company; all we have to do is update a bit column in one DB table and that's it, nothing complicated. My manager thought it was a good idea to develop an entire "front-end" website to make this task "easier", and yes, I am the one he put in charge of doing this, even though I work in the company as an Android dev, not a web dev. Making this site would be really simple and it'd only take a few hours of effort, but I find it really stupid and a waste of time coding a whole website to achieve a goal that only takes one freaking SQL sentence and no real clients using it. I don't know if, in fact, this is a stupid and useless idea, or I'm being a dick and have no reasons to blame my manager and bitch about it.4
-
Definitely the first Android app I decided to fork.
It was an open source OTP authenticator which hadn't been actively developed for 2 years at that point. At first I only did some small fixes and minor visual improvements but by now it's evolved into its own project with a lot of contributores and users on both Google Play and F-Droid.
When I started I had no knowledge of Java or Android development what so ever. So it basically forced me to learn lots of new stuff, especially once issues started to come in. By now I learned so much on this project that I'm thinking about re-writing the whole thing from scratch because I question some of the design choices from the original app I forked...
Github: https://github.com/andOTP/andOTP1 -
Every. Single. Time. I've tried to learn and implement proper Unit/Instrumentation testing, the main Android devs decide to go for something else or introduce some feature or Gradle plugin that breaks every tutorial out there. I find it way easier to just test everything manually than learning the new yearly trend. Am I the only one?1

Trying to install Linux on an HP Stream 7 has been way more difficult than it should have been, even when you take into account that it's a 32-bit processor with a 32-bit EFI!
First off, the only thing I've been able to get it to boot right of the bat is Android x86 and BlissOS... kind of. You would think that Android x86 would be perfect for a tablet, right? Nope, performance sucked sooooo bad.
After reading some forums, I was finally able to get Ubuntus to load up... with the limiting factor being no on-screen keyboard.
So... at the moment I guess I'm stuck with a useless Windows tablet, and probably will be for a long time (you know, since 32-bit architecture is being dropped)6 -
When Icriticize a paid service for taking away or not providing functionality for all users equally but then a user comes back defending them with some BS reason...
Ok... I'll just continue helping myself only...
@nnee
Me:
1. Can you put the New books tab with back in the bottom, scrolling down into the New section in the front page is annoying. At least make it a setting?
2. Where's the # of books read stat in Android?
Blinkist: Hi thanks for your message! The best way to view the newest titles on Android is to do just as you mention – scroll down to reveal the New section. As for BiB stats on Android, we're working on releasing this feature (it's only live on iOS at the moment).
Me: Hm... I liked the older way better. Faster and can tell when it was added. The problem is sometimes still new books don't refresh and I need to login out to get it to update. Also I notice sometimes the list changes randomly I think. One day a new book is there. The next day it's gone.
BiB stats have been in iOS for a year now? How hard is it to put it in Android. Personally it only took me a day to find out what my total is as I can write a program to do it so to me I don't understand how this could be taking so
Some user: Priorities and often it’s strategy for future features...
Me: you take away useful functionality and and can't release a feature that's been on the iOS version for a year already... fine,,, I'll just take it as a challenge... that I've mostly solved... for myself...3 -

Oh, Only 1 bug. exterminate.
99 bugs.
Inserted 100 rows of wrong data into tables in a Loop.
RaspberryPi Burnt due to electrical feedback from the sensors.
Android phone froze.
Wow. I still have my sensors fine though. -
What are some good android developer communities? Looking for somewhere to learn and ask questions that might not be code related, so can't be on stack overflow. What do you use? I use android for hobby projects only.5

I was Noob af in my first year of engg!
My school friends and I decided to make a website.A website which will be a one stop shop for sports news, movies etc etc.
We took a week to make a logo and decide website's name. Before writing a single line of code we fought with one of group members and he left the project.😂
In the name of website we didn't do anything other than logo and name and the semester got over.I failed in two subjects in that semester.
In third semester i realized nothing gonna happen if i stay with these people so i started with Android on my own and I'm an android dev now.
Ps:I was the only from that group that actually made a website. It was E-commerce website that i made in sem 4 -
!rant, but friendly advice.
I see all those jokes about Android Studio being too heavy, and while I completely agree, want to ask you guys something:
Have you increased the memory it can use in .vmoptions?
Mine lagged as hell, but was using only about 1GB of ram.
After slight change in that file, it finally started working like it should from the beginning.6 -
Being the only Android dev in the company, I felt very lonely. Google is the only friend I have during work.1

Question & Android
Is there a way on android to limit what apps are allowed to use mobile data and what are only allowed to use wifi?11 -
I just wished my previous alma mater treated CS students well like damn shitty teachers only teaching them Word and Excel (which is basically already taught in junior high).
Meanwhile my current alma mater is taking C# and Android development.
I pity those fools. -
So what do you call people who like Apple devices only or Android devices only? Or someone who thinks Apple devices are superior only or Android devices are superior only ?
Devicist ???12 -
Another try to optimize app for Android Go.
For those, who doesn't know, app will be featured in special Google Play section if it fits some restrictions.
And one of thhose restrictions - app must use less then 50Mb of RAM.
So, I've decided to start from scratch.
Hello world activity without appcompat library, only Anko and Kotlin support.
32Mb of RAM
SERIOUSLY?? What the flying fuck, Google?
I hope some of you will point me, what I'm doing wrong.6 -
Only now just discovered Termux for android... How have i not known of this?!
My Chromebook just got a million times more useful! :-D
Now to learn about vim and start hating myself :-34 -
I just found out YouTube ReVanced now has a kind of working patcher for android. It was easy to use and I don't have to use outdated vanced anymore. I can also choose which individual patches I want to used.
It's really nice. Even for people who don't want adblock and only want dislikes back since you can just disable that patch. I don't get why anyone wouldn't want to use it.13 -
Woo... A present from Google http://ai.googleblog.com/2019/02/...
Now I don't have a reason to work for Google though... Not that I could get in but...
Is it a bit ironic that my first and only native Android app ~10 years ago was to solve the same problem?1 -
For an exam we have to develop an app starting from the documentation (still the hardest part), like risk plain, timing projection ecc. we did all this stuff in time, except for the app. At the ending of time the professor ask to us how the app was going, and well... we bluffed, we said that we only need more time (at that point we have only installed Android Studio and JFK) but the prof give us an other month for the app, so we decide (me and my friend because in my team (4students) only 2 of us want to do something.. btw we learn how to work on Android Studio an develop a ugly, tiny but working app (the app consists in a remainder for your pet stuff like give it food, water or take it out ecc..). We took the max vote -1 because u know, timing is important ;) and yes, this is the story of my first, ugly, app :D My friend an I are so proud of that tiny shit 😄1

It drives me nuts when people compare iPhones to Samsung, not realizing that Samsung did not invent Android, nor are they the only phone manufacturer or Android OS distributor.
If you're comparing iOS to Android, that's one thing. Or if you are comparing iPhone's hardware to a specific Samsung phone's hardware, I get it. Heck, I'm cool if you compare the iPhone X to the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, because they're similar in price. But don't say that Apple is better than Samsung when you mean you have an issue with Android, or your battery life on your $300 Android device wasn't as good as your $700 iPhone. Apples to oranges guys! It's like comparing Visual Studio 2015 to Python.
I don't care who is right or which is better. At least know what you're comparing!
Thanks.2 -

Hey guys i relased a new app called: SaleMonkey. Im currently working on the next update an would like to get some serious feedback from people who look at the app with a developer mindset to spot some Problems.
I hope its not Bad if i poste a linkt to my app. You can get it here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...
Currently only on Android. Ios Version is planed for next year.
Thanks20 -
(Yes, another one of these)
Can someone please explain why android studio (including emulator, but still) plus a couple of firefox tabs and windows 10 occupy the ~8.7GB of RAM that are 74% of the 12 gigs I have? Especially since summing up the ram in use by applications according to task manager makes it look like only 3gb. Is Android Studio using some dark magic to conceal its RAM usage? What the hell!2 -
Android Studio upgrade
Over the weekend I upgraded my android studio and the project files of my current project and all went smoothly (as far as I thought).
I did not touch the project till today as was implementing some few features only for some few unexpected bugs to creap in.Been implementing that feature for some time and thought would be done in a flash only to my disappointment.
Turns after upgrading my SDK they were some conflicting dependencies that had no idea of.
To make it worse my fall to branch was way behind the active one and had to create a new project from scratch and copy paste files.
All this after spending hours in Stack
Overflow and scratching my head.
Lesson learnt to commit more frequently.1 -
My teacher wants me to run HelloWorld Application made in Android Studio ._.
First of all, its f**king huge in size
Second, we thought that only Chrome was notorious for being ram hungry.
ERRRR MAAAAH GAAAWD CRINGE!!5 -
Today i faced a "bug" which caused an element not to trigger a Bootstrap 3 accordion by klicking on it. Only on iOS/iPhone - Desktop and Android worked fine.
The actual problem was that almost the same structure worked fine on another website...
took me about 3 hours to figure out that the element which was supposed to trigger the accordion needs the css property 'cursor: pointer;'.
why the hell does a touch device, which got no coursor, need this property?!3 -
TIL google calendar app on Android doesn't let you change a reminder's reminding time.
There is edit but it only let you change title and date time and repeated options.
I can't find an option to postpone the reminder to next hour or something.
With that said, if you know how to do it, please share.9 -
I posted a few weeks ago about how I started my own mobile app development business. Today, I released its first app. It's a turn by turn navigation app for amusement parks, right now it's only featuring Walt Disney World. If you have an Android the app is called AmuseGO. I'm waiting for apple to approve it.2
-
TIL that in iOS, when you select text with double tap, it usually selects one word, but if that word is a part of a full name, it will select the full name. For example, tapping on “react” in “react sucks” will only select “react”, but tapping on “Howard” in “Howard Lovecraft” will select the entire thing.
Now that’s attention to detail. Android will never get this kind of care, pixel or not.13 -
I just downloaded battery monitor app to figure out why my new phones battery is draining so quickly...
The app says though it's best to charge only up to 80%.
But logically if this were true, shouldn't the manufacturer adjust for it themselves so that when Android says 100... In reality it's actually 80?15 -
So apparently the Android emulator only works well on Intel processors
And there was me trying to be the good guy and buy AMD5 -
Apparently my OP1 can also run Android 10 now...
https://forum.xda-developers.com/on...
And I upgraded my OP6 to LineageOS 17.1 a few weeks ago.
So the only reason I now have a Pixel 2 is because I need a non-rooted phone to access work emails... -
Imagine being so rich that you're too lazy to implement payment methods for countries where you product is popular. Microsoft (one drive) and Android (play) was like that for years. I want to pay for openai but it doesn't support ideal/paypal which is the payment method in the Netherlands. Credit card only. Credit cards is so unsafe, I don't understand it's the standard. I won't get one. Is there an api for generating content besides openai?6

No better way to start off a new year than to wake up to message from the boss telling you that you need to start to work even harder because there are projects overdue and clients has started charging penalties.
Of course he doesn't care that there are only two of us (me, a Junior Android Dev and he iOS Dev) and there are 3 projects, all with deadlines in December 2017 or January 2018.1 -
Today I will talk about Android OS being stupid.
Android lets u as a user move installed apps to external storage = microSD card.
However what is stupid about it is that only a small part of the app will be moved. For example, if you have an app taking 400 MB of storage, then "moving" it will move only about 100 MB of data to microSD card, while the remaining 300 MB of data will remain on the internal storage...
In Android 11 this is still not improved. Imagine having 11 versions of OS over 11 years and never making a crucial feature work properly. Meanwhile app sizes grow ever larger
Disappointing.5 -
Last night I was up until 3am because the fucking unity and the fucking Android SDK can't put together an structure without mi intervention.
It appears that since SDK 23 Google decided to move some libraries from tools to build-tools, but unity keeps trying to find that library in tools, obviously this error doesn't have any specific documentation and i spend around 5 hours downloading SDKs and trying to figure out what happen, till I found one tiny post in unity forum with only one answer.
I mean, on one side, this has changed since android 23 and the folks in unity can't change his fucking compiler yet, and on the other side, why the fuck Google change libraries from one place to another
Also, as a note to Google, your new system for SDK-only download its super shitty and full of problems, I don't know why you change it.1 -
Android force-updated itself without my permission and it appears they've removed the "open applications" menu altogether. If not, it's well and completely hidden.
Getting fucking sick of my phone and other devices being at the mercy of Mommy Microsoft, Daddy Google and Auntie Apple. Fuck them. I have zero control over my electronics anymore.
EDIT: It's there, but it only works if you're already in an app - not from the home screen. Because that makes fucking sense.3 -
Was really motivated and started out with Android development.
Android studio is sick as fuck.I am struck in the second step. The only solution I can find is "try restarting your system".
Like wtf arrrgh!!
After gazillion times of restarts later. Finally, I am giving up.
Thank you google, now go f*ck yourself.9 -
For those wanting split screen to work on android. Go to settings -> developer options -> "Force activities to be re-sizable"
And just like that. It works. (Only problem I've seen is the + button to post isn't there6 -
It's 2016 and Android still doesn't support ODBC (let alone OLEDB). Every time somebody asks how to connect their app to a database directly, the groupthink brigade goes "dur hur, use JSON/SOAP/XML services cuz raisins!1one*." That wasn't the fucking question. I don't want your framework-cobbling make-work dependencies. Even the cretins at Xamarin, trying desperately to hook Windows C# programmers, only have SQL Server support because Microsoft fucking did it for them. WTF have Android developers done over 7 OS versions if basic features like database access are still fucking missing? No wonder the App Stores are full of Mickey Mouse garbage.
*raisins!1one = "I don't know how to secure a database so I'll just yell 'security!1one' so people think I r smrt"5 -

Why Android uses so many quirky features in Java, like inner and anonymous classes, callbacks and nested generics?
I searched everywhere for the reason but can't find why, only how.
I rarely use these features outside of Android development.4 -
In the saga of the unnamed SAAS I've talked about before, LOOK AT THEM USER-SESSIONS XD
And this is only from Android-App embeds since web-embed isnt even open to public yet, so no google-crawller false-positives
The country I'm in, has only 8 sessions waayyyy down below so my code isn't messing up the numbers :3
I'm still too much of a bitch to face this product head-on and "launch" it damn this feels good 😤🤘3 -
For some weeks now I've been having strange compilation issues with Android Studio on Windows 10. Some of my builds fail with funny errors that have only 1-3 StackOverflow entries. When I switch to Linux (Pop!OS) it complies without errors apk gets installed on device. At some point I was frustrated where I spent a whole day trying to figure what's wrong only at night to code using Linux and it compiled. What's up with Android Dev on Windows?3

I've been investigating an android app that should handle gcm messages but somehow didn't do it after the app closed.
Used android studio to start debugging the app setup of gcm worked, closed the app - message was not processed by app.
Tried it again and started the app from phone closed it. Now the message gets processed.
Tried this for four days with workarounds, intensive researches even opened a ticket with Google for this but no luck.
... effin gcm ...
Today I eventually realized that when I started the app from android studio for debugging and closed the app then gcm apparently breaks and cannot handle messages anymore...
So I essentially wasted 4 days debugging a bug that only occurred because I debugged the app... *argh*

Wen I got my first Android phone I came across a make your own Android app ad with one of those "no programing experience needed drag and drop interface" I made a few news feed apps then got completely hooked, then I thought "I want to control everything within the app and not only drag and drop stuff" that thought changed my life.I started learning phonegap and started making Android apps with html5 ,put ADs on and published them to the play store.I then expanded my knowledge learnt Java, mysql, php, wordpress.

That moment when you've been slaving away after hours and before work and you decide to push all your local code (at least only the last week's worth) to BitBucket. But because everything you know about Android Development and SourceTree is self taught you manage to delete not only your online repository but all your local code as well. fml6

Android emulator would be the worst one for me. To be honest, I haven't used that many dev tech yet, but this thing gave me nightmares.
The one provided by Android Studio sucked ass horribly, and it didn't let me use my dedicated graphics chip (nVidia 740m). If I used it the emulator either my apps would crash or not start at all. After some googling, I found out that this was a common thing more or less...Using virtual graphics on it was slow, sluggish and rubbish with ~1 second delay with clicks and scrolling and shitty screen changes proccessing.
Using Genymotion was no better so I just stuck with the one provided by Google for the time being.
I have to add that most of those apps were tutorial apps, and only 2 were semi-serious. -
I feel bad for Monkey X, I've never used it, but it sounds like a good language. You've probably never used it - it's a cross platform language that compiles natively to iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, and more. It also can be exported into an HTML5 game. There's only been one successful app made with it. I feel so bad for it...1

Yo, i have a course where i have to build an android app, and we can make what the fuckever we want. Can you give me some interesting APIs, that are publicly available? It doesnt have to make sense, everything is better than using the anidb api, and thats the only thing that comes to mind.2

So here is an interesting story.
The company that I work went in collaboration with another company and as my company is a small startup we had only 2 employees. We had to do 2 different projects during the collaboration period.
I was put in-charge of an android application (At that time I had no experience of android development and it was one of their most important project without any guidance)
I was doing work of two companies and getting paid by one and I was getting shit from the company that we were collaborating with.
As a developer I value tasks and deadline but the company issued a new rule that I should stay in the office from 9-6 (strictly) which I didn't oppose. But the senior developers here stay strictly 9-6 but work only for about less 2 hours a day and get valued more.
I used to love working on weekends improving myself in the process but working over time is not valued by the company.
( BTW I completed their project in about 1.5 months ) -
Every internship i am doing, i somehow end up being the only person working on the android, with no other person remotely knowing any stuff about it, even though the company's only user related product is an android app.
I want to have some fucking mentor or senior damn it to give me *some* tasks, why are you asking me to make everythin?
Damn , what have i gotten myself into3 -
Looks like Android studio's artificial java to kotlin converter learned faster to write better kotlin than my shitty brain :/
People from java background, where did you learned to write efficient kotlin code and how?
Where to learn how to write that famous "kotlin's super precise and small , ugly ass anonymous looking code full of keywords , that only work when arranged in a particular pattern and defies my all previous knowledge of oop , java and good practices " code?
I really wish to learn, since android and google seems to be heading towards this beautiful new shit1 -
I noticed a bug on devrant app on Android. Or is it a feature? Haha.
When you comment on a rant and then press Modify to change your comment, when you edit and save the edited comment you get to the updated one. If you press back you get to the previous one (not updated comment). If you try to reopen the rant you commented you see only the updated one.
So....here's a bug. What do I win?4 -
I have always had android phones but after 18 month into 2 year contracts the batteries always become crap and last about 18 hours. Is this just an android thing or does it happen to iPhones as well?
I was thinking of going on the iPhone upgrade program to get a new phone each year and just getting a simple only deal.
Any advice welcome!13 -
Every time I try to use Android Studio in any linux distribution it makes file system read only mode and I have to use fsck command every time. Is there anybody who have the same problem as me 😐😐3

I was hired as an Android Developer. Now, being a Windows Phone/Mobile User but coming from Android this wasn't a problem.
Working with Android really convinced me what a piece of garbage that OS is. 50% of the code are fixes for stuff that SHOULD work and DO work on other OSes just not on Android. Often times I got in trouble for Apps crashing due to the Android Phone itself failing it's job which I of course can't fix. Sadly, I'm only trained in Android and Windows Development and no one wants a Windows App, so I'm still stuck with this underpayed job which makes me sad! -
I've noticed two things with the app after I went to Android P/9:
1. The constant freezing where only killing helps, which I had in Android 8.0.1 is now gone.
2. The app doesn't go to main page and I accidentally remove updoots from people.1 -
I work as android dev for the past year and a half, this week in my startup I started doing some backend (it consists of microservices, codebase is written in python. were using rabbitmq for queuing and for http our framework is falcon).
At first I was very adamant to learn new stuff but now that Im getting deeeper into backend I started to really enjoy it!
Its still lots of new information but at the same time it feels soo refreshing to have two experienced mentors who can guide you, since Ive spent last year and half working on android completely by myself and relying only on myself. Also im very lucky that codebase is clean. -
Joined a company 7 months back, was told they would be hiring other Android developers; a prospect I was excited by as I have not had the chance to work alongside my own kind.
Still no one hired, I'm the only Android dev and I'm still teach and working by myself. What should I do?!3 -
Needed to create an app for android for a school project so we tried xamarin because c#. After 2 weeks of crying and breaking we decided to switch java. Now we only hate programming in java but at least we it works5
-
Whelp, I made the switch to android about a week ago. Didn't go two days without getting malware on it. I only browse hacker news and used devRant, standard messaging app, no root, so no shady things, just fairly standard things besides devRant. When I called Samsung support, they said it was a known issue and sent me some links to some forums where people were having the same issues. After digging through those threads, there was an official answer from Samsung saying they weren't going to fix the issue (at least in any foreseeable future). That's unacceptable for a phone that was released less than a year ago.
I'm done with Samsung phones for good. I might come back to Android on a google phone.
I hate how Android is distributed and the manufacturers don't take ownership of their issues. They just work on the new phone without caring for anything older than 6 months. If I had to get a new phone every time a major security issue was found and the company refused to fix it, I'd spend more money than on an iPhone.
It seems like Google keeps their devices up to date better, presumably because they have better control of OS releases. But non-google Android devices are dead to me.
Back to my iPhone for now...

First run of Android-Studio after installation on a new Pop-OS! machine -> START FAILED!
Welcome back to hell Francois!
How many devices running Java today? Only once on one machineI have understood !
It is largely enough to show how LAME! you have been GOGOLE (in French-> IDIOTS!) to have chosen the worse technology, already worse at the beginning of Android.

When rage turns to sadness :
With great frustration wrote and debugged android code since morning , so as a reward , I thought about rebooting my laptop once the code was working and committing it later. Code ran , rebooted my laptop and went to get some coffee, only to find that bodhi crashed and wouldn't run without live usb. No commit, no backup, all went down the drain1 -
Why, Google? WHY?
My wife was annoyed, that her android image gallery showed the images she has sent via telegram, but not the ones, that she had received.
Stupidity no. 1: telegram puts received pictures into Pictures/Telegram on the internal memory. It seems like the default gallery apps don't take nested image-containing directories. As Pictures only contained the default Sony dummy images I moved them away.
Stupidity no. 2: both the receiving and sending image directory of Telegram is named "Telegram" and guess what... Android does not like that. Only the first ist shown (sent images).
Stupidity no. 3: to work around that, I installed the emulated shell to make a symlink named "Telegram-Received". Aaaand that requires root access.
Goddammit Google! She just wants to see our couple selfies that I sent her in her gallery!6 -
Just got added to a few repos of iOS/Android apps that I'll be working on for a new client. All of which only have 2-3 commits and no further history. Guessing the previous dev was using drop box or something, I'm a little concerned.

Do you use any other IDEs as Android Studio or Eclipse? I dont wanna use Eclipse and AS is to buggy :(. I only search an good ide for Android dev (using java)13

So.. currently working on updating some hybrid mobile apps. Major updates, so requires drastic measures..
anyway, over in my Nx workspace now, I generate a new Angular app, add Capacitor and generate a new Android project.
Then when I open my new project in Android Studio, it recommends updating AGP from 8.0.0 to 8.1.1.
Waiting for the new packages to download, AS shows an orange warning message popup that reads "sync is taking an unusually long time", or something like that.
Software development from a third world country sucks donkey dick. Because I've "only" got a 20Mbps connection. 🤔5 -

Hello. (Android) dev here contemplating about the future of my profession.
I am looking for a specialization or a field in my profession where i can be free of dependencies from GAFAM (The big five)
Basically software development is me only using dependencies and stuff they and 3rdparty people have created and then it works or it doesnt. Or if you dont keep it up2date it wont work because deprecation and breaking changes. I was web developer before and changed to android because of all the libs and frameworks one needed to wield for proper development. And now android has mostly become the same. Vanilla android is easy, but u start using google apis or 3rdparty services u quickly realize how far u get away from your actual usecase. Usermanagement, oauth, 2fa, userdatamanagement, crossplattform, offline, syncing etc.
I am pretty sure the topic came up before (dev fatigue, dependency fatigue) and most of you know what i mean but i might be the recent casualty here.2 -

Fucked up my old phone (picked up an overheating phone with super cold hands and the screen exploded) and my new one is way faster despite having almost exactly 1/2 the CPU power (8-core 2.13GHz in old, 4-core 1.4GHz in this one) due entirely to the Android build not being dogshit. They both only have 2GB of RAM, so i'm still sitting at like 300MB of free RAM with nothing running, but it's a start.7

Question for Droid gurus here.
Is there any way to use different fonts in android for different languages ?
I have changed ttf to add urdu fonts but then I'm seeing boxes instead of emoji and symbols. Can I add it to urdu only.
On web we have CSS unicode-range in @font-face which sets a boundary for different fonts to be used for different unicode characters/ranges.
Can this be done in android system some way ?
I'm not talking about using it in an app but in whole droid.1 -
🤤🤤🤤I seriously just spent the whole day trying to fix something that looked like it was ProGuards fault, but it turns out fuckimg Gradle plugin and android studio shat all over every version of every project on my home.
Literally 15 hours wasted.
Defeated in an Uber going back home direct to bed with only a single meal today
Tomorrow can't go worse I guess.
At least I get that going for me.
Hope your day was better -

My week is up with Linux , im back on windows I tried about 10 variations 🙄
Best I could get was manjaro with KDE
It was pretty close to what I was looking for but I still have to install some of the programs I need using command line 🙄 how do they not have installers for them yet ... Crazy maybe they do.
I need a virtual machine which is fine I can still use my graphics so it's fast! Play games etc
But it crashed and died.
Not only that but every version of Linux.. it felt 🤔 shitty like the mouse was bolted tight to the screen and only heavy movement would do anything . Yes I have high mouse sensitivity (very high) but it feels sooooo rigid
Here's the thing I like what Linux is trying to do... It's just horrifically executed the learning curve to extreme and there is no central this is how you do it. With good reason yes but if you give someone to many choices they can't decide and give up and I think that's the only reason Linux isn't winning . It's to complicated.
Android is the only Linux OS I love manjaro did well .
But android is simple effective and does what it's meant to without any help
All other Linux os' are .. developerised as in only a developer really truly stand a chance to grasp it no normal folk out in the world.
People say Linux doesn't have long left to go... To me it seems like they are still miles off no closer then 5 years ago.
That was my experience at least ...7 -
Yesterday my phone decided not to boot anymore. I needed some of the data that is in there, but I can't take the phone to samsung support to bring it back because it is highly sensible and TOP SECRET data.
So I was all on my own. I have never done anything similar to this so it was all shitty guides and forum post I had.
2 hours of researching pass.
I installed a software called Odin to reinstall android and maybe get my data back (better lost than in someone' else hands).
Not only did I have to fucking wait 3 hours of downloading android because my samsung account is free and thus samsung gives limited download speed, it didn't even fuckking work!
Now my phone is even more fucked and I don't know what to do3 -
PhoenixOS (Android) in Windows
--booting from usb
1. Success
Boots well, with secure boot off, and legacy boot on
http://metroize.com/usb-boot-linux-...
2. Crash
google play store and other google services keeps crashes, but other apps doesn't
when ignoring error popups, the app doesn't actually crash
3. storage
the memory is only allocated to the system, which means no user file storage
have to find a way to fix that3 -
Im not a thumbnail maker but what does this look like? im using scratch btw lol has a lot of block lag that when u play projects you freeze for a bit , same with blocks , the only thing that kills lag is something better than chromebook or my pc definetly run 3d scratch games on that xD includeing an android emulator so i can go back to scripting!, (what does this look like tho?)22

Android + servers
Hey guys
So cause I barely have time to code I mounted a server with my old cellphone, so I can advance one of my projects at work (it's a helper with stuff like tables and calculators for work [CNC machine] )
The cell phone is a meizu m2 with android 6 (don't buy one, has lots of stupid bugs)
My problem: android terminates the server and a app I use to copy files from Dropbox to the server folder (only work arround the home rooter)
F king meizu bugs : resets lots of definitions to default, like I give permition to the server app to always be on and it changes back to default when I turn off the screen.
So when I turn of the screen the server goes down
Solutions to keep the server always awake?
Also better solution to change /upload the files without Dropbox as an intermediary
Btw the app that syncs also turns off every fucking time (so no updates till I get home)1 -
help with the ui for my app?
it pretty much just gives you a word a day. they frontend is functionally complete, but it looks pretty ugly. any ui ideas? (the backend isn't complete so only test data is being returned by the server)
it's android only right now, because i cannot afford to compile it on ios
i'll put the download link in the comments8 -
In android 7.1, I've seen a lot of conflicting reports about crypto security.
If I do something like the following in the default android 7.1 browser...
var array = new Uint32Array(n);
window.crypto.getRandomValues(array);
How secure would the resulting numbers be overall? I'm asking because I've seen a lot of articles talking about it, but they never specifically mention the default 7.1 android *browser* and what or how it obtains secure random numbers. They only ever talk about the api, sdk, and developers working in java.4 -

Think you've mastered abstraction /seperation of what should be Android classes versus what should be Android resources?
Decompile the Gmail app and check all the xml tags you might have missed.
Remember: UI and most application properties are loaded on the xml codes first (during inflation), then on activities or fragments last (especially if the views are only instantiated).
I just realized that I need to learn a lot of tags today. -

I was talking with a few people from college recently and we all had a good laugh at the fact, That a lot of job postings for mobile developers state that they are looking for an senior/intermediate android developer that has anywhere from 10 -15 years experience.
I even had an interview and in it they stated that they are heart set on finding someone with 12+ years of experience.
but Android was only release 9 years ago... SO HOW ARE YOU SUPPOSE TO HAVE 10+ YEARS EXPERIENCE -
I am looking to create a cool little 2D platformer for Android. The thing is I've mostly only worked on utility applications and haven't had to deal much with animations and physics etc. I feel like unity is over the top but I don't really know of any proper alternative. Any recommendations for a terminal app for iPad? I only need it to ssh into Linux servers and run stuff/vim/htop/etc., don't really care about fancy features or local device access. Good performance and security would be pluses. I don't mind paying if it's worth it. Coming from Termux on Android the ones I've tried so far (Termius, Shelly, LibTerm) have felt pretty crap so far, though I guess Shelly is the best one out of them.1

Hi guys, I need your help. Mostly those who use MacBook for development. I'm looking to buy a new laptop and was thinking of getting a MacBook. This will be my first time owning one. I always used Windows but for almost over a year now, I've been on Elementary OS. I do programming on my current laptop in Eclipse, IntelliJ and mostly, Android development in Android Studio. Also, I'm learning HTML and CSS. The battery of my current HP laptop has degraded to the point this thing only last 30 - 40mins when unplugged. Because of this, I can't do much on-the-go. Buying a new windows laptop, I know I will definitely dual boot with another Linux distro or better full boot Linux and get rid of Windows. My question is, how is programming or development on a MacBook. How's does Android studio perform? Are there anything that MacBook users wished worked better on Macs which involves Development? Please help because I can't decide and since I haven't used a MacBook as my daily driver, I'm not sure how it will affect my work writing code in there.
Thanks I'm advance for your answers. 😁4 -
I hate tooling around Scala with libGDX so much - Gradle, Gradle Android plugin and ProGuard are just awful.
For example today I got during compilation: "Warning: Exception while processing task java.io.IOException: Please correct the above warnings first."
Grepping build log for (case insensitive) "warn" returns only the message above to correct warnings.
What the hell? I am required to correct not existing or invisible warnings or what? I hate you Gradle and ProGuard, I really do! >:( -
Is there an Android media player that doesn't take over headset buttons, doesn't store a history, doesn't search for media to play, and doesn't do shit when off when you accidentally hit your headset button?
Is the headset button thing just an Android 11 problem?
I use vlc for the desktop and it does exactly what I want. On Android it takes over headset buttons and plays last file even after being completely shutdown and history is disabled. I HATE apps that do shit without you telling them to. The only way to fix this in vlc is to clear its cache and history manually in its settings and then forcing it to restart the app. Another thing vlc did was have full screen controls when I swiped right when the phone was fucking locked! I cannot remember what I did to disable that, but that was not cool at all. I think that was some fucked up android 11 feature.
I tried MX Player and it has zero options for disabling history.
So I figured I would ask here. Are there any non-shitty media players for Android?
I am so close to saying fuck you android 11 and sending the damn phone back. I hate the automatic shit I have to figure out how to turn off every time I do something. Leave me the fuck alone until I tell you to do something you pos phone.8 -

I prefer to write desktop applications or mobile applications (android). Only time I touched web-applications so far was for school.
Tbh, I hate it the way have to do it in school. vanilla js, no css framework, JSP backend (sometimes php 5.4) and that rounded up with eclipse indigo.
Let's not even talk about the fact that we never really talked about js or css in school, so that was even harder for me too begin with (still suck at both of them imo)
I can't express my gratitude for js and css frameworks. They make web development much more fun for me.

A bit dishearted here!

How do you guys sync your music library on your linux PC on your android phone. For apple products there is iTunes. I know about a deprecated tool for samsung phones called Samsung Kies. Also, no, google music is not an option. Any suggestions?16

Apparently Android Pay released for Canadians some time ago, because it's on the front page of the google play store. I really want to use it cause remembering to carry a card around is tough work, but I'm failing the safetynet check.
My only choice, it seems is to revert to a system where I don't have root. I was thinking of installing lineageos, but I'd be giving up some pretty serious things that I've gotten into with Resurrection Remix.
The fling navbar would be gone, I'd probably be able to deal with that but I just find it a way nicer experience than the traditional android navbar.
I might not be able to use Google Assistant, not sure if Lineage has it
And (worst of all), if I revert to a system without root, I won't be able to use my system-wide dark mode from substratum (I'd also be losing battery optimizing features from greenify, which is just another downside)
Existing Android Pay users, is this worth it?10 -
Trying to configure a smartphone which was already optimized for elderly users, with a more simplistic launcher, larger font size etc.
But the underlying Android 7 and its apps still keep showing up with their inconsistent UI and nagging messages and suggestions.
Is it even possible to configure any Android device to make it really simplistic and distraction free like, say, a classic NOKIA before the age of smartphones?
Culprit no. 1 Google and Android system. Suggestions about features keep recurring, even after stating that we are not interested in the feature.
Culprit no. 2 WhatsApp, unfortunately still the most popular messaging app in Germany, so this crappy bullshit software by Mark Fuckerberg's company has to be installed. Even to me as a tech savy developer, WhatsApp has a confusing user interface that tries to promote features like status (their versions of stories) without any option to hide / turn off.
How shall an 80 year old senior learn to use the app when they previously only used SMS and voice calls? I don't know.7 -
Where is the mac vs ubuntu vs windows war for developers? I am a Windows user (on a dell latitude e5570), but I am considering a new laptop because everyone says macbooks are great and outperform windows (which on gradle builds is true).
I mainly use my laptop only for developing and programming things like: full-stack, Android and a little bit of deeplearning/ML.
So which one would you recommend and why? These are pretty heavy tasks, from my opinion.10 -

Would you guys recommend anything I should look into to make this process easier, without having to develop 3 separate versions for each platform?7 -

Has anyone experience with NativeScript with or without Angular? I‘m currently planning for a new project and I want it to run on multiple devices. Especially I want it to run native on iOS and Android and (maybe with Electron) on desktop.
Currently I have only experience with Angular in the Web and inside Electron. -
So I have some android device experience as well as scala with Play framework and someone has asked if I can build them and android and iOS for their business. Mainly information with a few tools for using their companies methodologies. I have never created an iOS app before only Android.
So my question is what should I do, write both natively or do hybrid using PhoneGap or alike (recommendations welcome)3 -
Am I the only to have bad mojo with Android 7? It loses 4g network all the time, restarts, is generally slow... It's like they follow the Microsoft release model, one version stable (4), next one buggy and bad (5), then nice again (6), and now bad (7)...

Another severe UI fail by Google:
On stock Android 7, the expanded system control menu only shows FOUR controls per page in horizontal view.
Compare that to superior TouchWiz (by Samsung), which showed all 23 controls at once, as seen in the screenshot attached in a comment.
In addition, on TouchWiz, the user could tap multiple options at once. Tapping on a toggle would just turn a feature on or off, and opening a menu would require holding the toggle for a second.
On stock Android, tapping opens the menu, so turning a feature off requires three more taps to reach a toggle located inside the submenu and to then go back.
This makes deactivating multiple features on stock Android a finger workout.
I am not sure which other stock Android versions are like that because I couldn't find horizontal screenshots of the system control menu (or toggle menu, or whatever it is called).
Only four controls per page? Seriously, Google?

I hate the android development website. I'm trying to learn android development since two weeks and I didn't understand anything even though I was following everything the "Training" section said... Only yesterday I discovered that the "API Guides" section provides all the informations I need. Come on, why the hell is this se second section on the website??
This seems to be a user experience error to me.

@dfox I cannot scroll down the list of somebody's or my own rants on the profile screen. I use the Android app, and scrolling after a point becomes a tedious process only allowing a millimeter at a time. Could you please fix this?5

Jira on Android 🙄
I had an overview of the backlog, blocked, active issues, could see who works on what and so on ...
Accidentally pressed the back button, returned to the project. Now it's a single big list with only issue type, description and deadline. It's pretty much a guessing game, which feature is open. Their seems to be no way to change that, not even deleting any data.
How did this happen?? Let me change it back!6 -

I declared a boolean variable to be public static in my android activity and assigned a false value to it outside the onCreate.
only one method can change its value to true, so once its executed
the value of the boolean variable was set to true even on a new launch after finishing the activity.
didn't know why but it happened.
solved it by assigning a false value in the onCreate method. -
Fucking android...
Spent my whole day trying to tint (i.e. alter the image color) some svg with a PictureDrawable in an ImageView.
Went android underground, thought it had something to do with LAYER_TYPE_SOFTWARE (since this was required to render the underlying svg), tried my way through ColorFilters and ColorStateLists...
8 hours later I discovered that apparently YOU CANNOT TINT a PICTUREDRAWABLE - this only works with BitmapDrawable. *argh*
And not a word of mention in the fucking documentation *tit*1 -
Has anyone done client side validation of subscriptions in Android? Or atleast just figure if it's expired or not?
I've spent my whole day trying to do this without a server and no, Google only has API for servers.
SO working answers are like 3-5 years old after which the API were changed. New answers simply ignore the part 'client side'1 -
Hello devs! My first time here! I'll share a doubt with you: today I have a team with mobile and Internet together (2 iOS + 2 Android + 3 Internet fullstack) and others. Is it a common layout having team mixed like that? Or you have separate teams for Internet and other for Mobile only? Thanks!! 😃3

How does one convert an .img system image for Android to the format readable by Heimdall on Linux... Only thing I found so far requires Windows... Been programming on Android for quite a while now and I'm having this feeling to dig into a new side project, however I need some kind of backend, what's the most simpliest/best/reliable backend language to learn, I only need the ability to have a API (auth, getters, posts, etc) thanks !4 -

Android 13 will Unlock Certain Device Controls even when Locked
Android 13 is the newest operating system that will be available soon. The OS comes with a range of new features, one of which is unlocking certain device controls even when the device is locked. This is a game-changer that will significantly enhance the user experience.
Introduction
The Android operating system has undergone numerous changes since its inception. With every new release, users are treated to new features that enhance the overall user experience. Android 13 is no different, and it promises to revolutionize the way we interact with our devices. One of the most exciting features of Android 13 is unlocking certain device controls even when the device is locked. In this article, we'll take a closer look at this feature and explore its implications for users.
What is Android 13?
Before we delve into the details of Android 13, let's take a moment to understand what it is. Android is an operating system designed primarily for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. It was developed by Google and is currently the most widely used mobile operating system in the world. Android 13 is the latest version of this operating system, and it comes with a range of new features that will make it even more user-friendly.
Device Control Access
One of the most exciting features of Android 13 is the ability to access certain device controls even when the device is locked. This means that users will be able to control various functions of their device without having to unlock it. Some of the controls that will be accessible include the flashlight, camera, and voice assistant.
How will it work?
The process of accessing device controls when the device is locked will be straightforward. Users will only need to swipe left on the lock screen to access a new panel that will display the controls. The controls will be easy to use, and users will be able to activate or deactivate them with a single tap. This feature will make it easier for users to perform certain tasks without having to unlock their device.
Implications for Users
The ability to access certain device controls when the device is locked will have several implications for users. Firstly, it will make it easier for users to perform certain tasks quickly. For example, if you need to use the flashlight, you won't have to go through the process of unlocking your device and navigating to the flashlight app. Instead, you can simply access the flashlight control from the lock screen.
Secondly, this feature will enhance the security of the device. By limiting access to certain controls, users can ensure that their device remains secure even when it is locked. For example, the camera control will only be accessible when the device is unlocked, which will prevent unauthorized users from taking pictures or videos.
Other Features of Android 13
Apart from the device control access feature, Android 13 comes with several other exciting features. These include:
Improved Privacy Controls
Android 13 comes with improved privacy controls that give users more control over their data. Users will be able to decide which apps have access to their location, contacts, and other sensitive data.
Enhanced Multitasking
Multitasking has always been a key feature of Android, and Android 13 takes it to the next level. Users will be able to view multiple apps at the same time, making it easier to switch between them.
New Messaging Features
Android 13 comes with new messaging features that will make it easier for users to communicate with their friends and family. These include the ability to react to messages with emojis and the ability to schedule messages.2
