When you are a Dev but you don't want to be single
Girl: what's your profession?
Me: I am a writer
Girl: Cool! What do you write?
Me: I write code😎18 -
Am I the only one who learns more on my own than at university? It really annoys me when I come here to study but all I do is read devRant posts all day, they are good tho.19

1024 points of soldering !!
Wasn't expecting that when I began, but it's quite interesting and the result will look amazing ^^
I'm making a LED matrix from 0, controlled by an Arduino, it will look really good when it's finished, I plan to use it to display notifications, clock, sound spectrum etc...
What do you think of it ? 😇15 -
On my annoying radar today - devs who learn one language and then *insist* on using it for everything, even when it makes absolutely zero sense.
"Ooh I'd like to do some microcontroller development. But I only know Java. How do you run Java on a microcontroller?"
"...You don't."
"...but I heard a talk where someone did it. Look, there's this microjava page. How do I use it?"
"It's an interesting technical demo, but that's it. Dude, just learn C. It's not hard, Java has C style syntax anyway and this way you can...."
"...but I only want to use modern programming languages. C is irrelevant these days, it's pointless me learning it."
"It's definitely still relevant if you want to program a microcontroller."
"...but I want to do that in Java."

Simply curious, but why do people use Vim when they can use a proper IDE like VS code?
I was never a fan of Vim. I simply liked it for the keyboard shortcuts, but in VS code, you can use a Vim extension and still have the keyboard shortcuts :/
I don't see the point in Vim.48 -
Ubbhhhh <<-- me when I realized I put gmail.con instead of gmail.com for my devRant account.
It's been actually quite a while since I'm here but couldn't do anything but read others rants since I never got the confirmation email because of that silly mistake.
It's now my chance to say hi to everyone 🤗10 -
When I'm coding, I often come up with some cool algos and when I do, I feel pretty good.
But the next second, I get this feeling that I know there are a million other people in the world who have solved the same problem with the same or better algorithm and I feel like shit. Like all the work I put in is somehow redundant.
Like finding answers on StackOverflow... When you do, you know the person who answered has already done it. You're just repeating it. But again, the fact that I'm looking for answers from other people in the first place is ....
I don't know. I guess I need to change the way I code from now on....3 -
How do you survive those days of pure despair, when you just want to hide or run away, when everything you do seems meaningless? How do you find the strength to keep moving forward when the voice in your head keeps asking "what's the point?"
I hoped this would go away (or at least get easier) with age, but here I am, almost in my thirties and still haunted by the same thoughts I've had since I was a teenager.12 -
When project manager is talking about things that I have no idea but I just keep saying "Yes, I can do it"1
-
It makes me feel like a whore when looking for jobs.
I don't really wanna do it, but I'm in a situation where i have to do it to survive.6 -
My girlfriend has no idea what I do at work, but apparently she thinks I'm the best "computer guy" ever when I can plug in a Chromecast to her TV2
-
I've got an Arduino now and I was building lights the last weeks to understand the coding. But when it comes to use full stuff I could do my mind is empty. Do you have any suggestions for me?
.
.
I know there have to be FUCKs in a good rant. So I will miss use the tags...13 -
Ok google, set an alarm in 20min works great but when you say ok google, cancel my alarm it just says you can do that in the app. I know I can do it in the alarm app, but I am a lazy piece of shit, that's why I asked you to do it!4

Do you code in your dream too?
Cuz, I do. Mostly it's about some functionality I am not able to implement in real life, at the end of my dream I feel like I have got a really great logical solution but when I wake up it doesn't make any sense.
(Excuse me if the image is a repost)8 -
Unfortunately I don't have a laptop, but my raspberryPi will do just fine (I will use other stickers when I get a laptop). Thanks for the stickers :)1

Doing linguistic research where I need to parse 2000 files of a total of 36 GB. Since we are using python the first thing I thought was to implement multi threading. Now I changed the total runtime from three days to like one day and a half. But then when I checked the activity monitor I saw only 20 percent of the CPU usage. After a searching process I started to understand how multi threading and multi processing works. Moral of the story: if you want to ping a website till they block you or do easy tasks that will not use up all power of one core, do multi thrading. If you need to do something complicated that can easily consume all the powers of a single CPU core, split up the work and do multi processing. In my case, when I tried to grab information from a website, I did multi thrading since the work is easy and I really wanted to pin the website 16 times simultaneously but only have 4 cores. But when it come to text processing which a single file will take 80 percent of cpu, split it up and do multi processing.
This is just a post for those who are confused with when to use which.12 -
Friend : I will do this when I get back from work.
Me : But you are working from home, aren't you?
Friend : Yes, but I am at work, right now.
Me: And how does your route back home look like?
Friend : I switch input source from my work's laptop to gaming rig.6 -
I honestly don't get too mad when people aks me to do things like install programs for them. This is not my dayjob, but when you think of it, they're right when they say "you are a programmer so you must know how to do that". We do know how to do that. When you have a question about plants and you know a farmer, you are going to ask the farmer, even though he is not a gardener. He will know. Just as we know how to use computers very well.2
-
I don't always leave my job..
But when I do, I leave a bunch of shitty code that will make the next developer suffer.
That's what they get if they keep asking 'We need it now/today'4 -
This is a ways out because I can't find LED filaments thin enough to simulate this, but if/when I find them, how difficult would it be to program a controller to have them map my circulatory system, with them pulsing in time to my pulse? I want to do something cool with my arm, and this keeps coming into my head, but I'm freaking out over how difficult I'm thinking this is going to be.
Ideas? Either on how to do this, or what else I can (reasonably) do? Friends irl want a rocket punch, I want a flamethrower, but anything else?72 -
I dont hate PHP, but I do hate when lazy admins do stupid things.
Why can't the PHP-maintainers do a proper website? Why the fuck can't I subscribe to mailing lists?
Well, it seems like when I do a request, the webserver sends a email with MY EMAIL. And guess what, the listserver REJECTS it because it fails DMARC.
They also refer to the manpage of ezman, but they have disable ALL the functions there too.
What kind of retards is doing that shit. I completely understand why people hate on PHP now.6 -
When you do something not part of your job but you were feeling nice today. Then it sets in that you just inherited that task. What have I done...3
-
Just blowing off steam with y'all. It will sound confused, but it's just all of my depressive thoughts mashed up in a rant.
So, here I am.
Surrounded by incompetent professors who are unable to point me in the right direction, that rarely even know what they are 'teaching'. In a moment of total loss, that has been lasting for months. Totally lost my motivation and my will to pursue a career in IT. All I do is game, eat, sleep, repeat. I am exhausted mentally. When I get back from school, I can't think of anything else but to relax and do nothing. I am frustrated. I care about becoming a programmer, but I can't find my inner strenght. School draws all of my strenght and willpower away from me, and therefore I get distracted very easily. I just do not know what to do anymore. I want to keep going, but I am stuck, unable to do so. "Perhaps this is just not for me" is what keeps resounding inside my head, but I do not truly believe it. I just wish that all of this stress would just disappear, and allow me to do what I care about. I need help to find the needed focus to continue.21 -
Not sure what I'd do when it happens but from the looks of it Amazon want to start the AI takeover.
I guess I'll still develop games as a hobby :D -
Literally anything but work with computers, I think. They ask my brother to fix anything technical in the house and ignore it when he fails. They haven't been able to watch TV in six months. When I suggest that my (well-intentioned but mostly nonverbal) sibling probably shouldn't go into development, they tell me I don't know my own job. I suspect they're convinced I do graphic design.
I write C++ applications that run physical simulations and sometimes train AI models for pattern recognition and highlighting unusual incoming files.
They suggested I go to an undergrad program for data science. I already *do* data science for money and I already have an undergrad degree. 🙄4 -
Mom: what is it you do exactly?
Me: I make web sites and test computers for bugs.
Mom: What is a bug?
Me: it is when a program does something you do not want it to do.
Mom: k, I don't understand how money is made in that. But, you know (random store) is hiring.2 -
Do anyone else have major focus issues? When I'm enjoying something, I can focus completely for a long time. But when I'm miserable, 15 minutes seems to be the maximum I can focus.
It's really hard when you have long passages to read for class and are unable to focus long enough to actually absorb the material.
I really want to try ADHD medicine, but I don't want to rely on it to focus.8 -
Am I the only one that gets fucking pissed when others write unnecessary <div>s?
I know sometimes it's necessary for styling, but my coworkers do it because it's easier to add a new div than extending the style of an existing element.
What's worst, when I do it they reject my PR saying to create a new div instead. Fucking fuck off.5 -
They call it “Personalization”, “Analytics” and “Customer Success Research”. But back in time when I was using Alcohol 120 and StarFuck just to play games we called it “Spyware”.
Like it’s only spyware when you do it, but when we do it it’s “Research”.3 -
Why do I have no problems writing code and designing databases, but draw a complete blank when trying to come up with a good database username for the code to use?3
-
i kinda feel embarrassed all the time. i feel like it's never enough, i don't know enough, there's so much i don't know. i do enjoy my work and sometimes there are moments where i'm proud of what i've done, or these "i'm a fucking genious" moments when i solve a bug or a certain problem or when something finally works. but if i have to do something new, i tend to panic a bit, as long as i do not yet have a concrete solution in mind.
my perception contrasts with the feedback people give me, but even when i'm happy about the positive feedback, i tend to think to myself, "they're wrong, it's not that great"..4 -
When I got to learn about json yesterday I hate it cause I need to do extra work to MVC project. But after today the instructor told us what it does, and I love it. Gonna start learning this stuff more tomorrow1
-
I starting to think, that I may actually be addicted to learning 😅 sound completely stupid, but I'm kinda stressed lately, so I wanted to take a day off, and not do anything.
But my mind kept being like "how does this work, how does that work, how do they fit together". I've never really tried before, to not research something, when I wanted to know how it worked, but Damn it's actually been hard not to...7 -
Mom: "so... you do things with the computer, but what do those things do?" or "I have no clue what you just said, but good luck with that"
Father: "couldn't you have gotten a real job? Like machining or warehouse management, where actual work can be seen rather than sitting on your &ss all day, typing on that keyboard"
- he changed his view real quick when I showed him my paycheck. ($3/ hr more than him)
Brother: "cool"
Ex-gf: "I hate you" (more because of my starting pay)3 -
You will have a first phase when you will do everything on your own.
Then you will have a second phase when you will totally rely on external libraries found on the internet.
Then you will have a phase when you will use libraries only for the stuff you don’t want to bother because, never reinvent the wheel but do not get too much tech debt.
Then the hyper simplification phase when you will refuse modern solutions for good old robust stuff as they used to do back then
Then I don’t know… but I am getting interested in agriculture
Anyway try always to learn new stuff and don’t be afraid of change as it is normal. And learn other skills not related to code, those will keep you alive1 -
How do you guys program when you don't feel like it especially for school? I've fallen a bit behind in my classes and the programs are really easy to write but they're time consuming to do and sometimes (most of the time) I honestly just don't feel like doing them. How do you get yourself motivated?10
-
I was browsing through xkcd when I came across this comic. Then I realised that a line break after every sentence is actually what I do when writing something in LaTeX. It has no effect in the end but I feel like it makes the document clearer while working with it. Anyone else who does this? ^^'1
-
I usually never had like a serious fight with a other dev I have a really good team but occasionally when I do this is my response. 🙂2

I think,
Every programmer when Starts learning programming:-
'I am the one who is gonna lead the world'
But ends up saying:-
'What the fuck I was supposed to do?'🙃4 -
I dont always comment but when i do, its because i have written some code that may seem like i am a retard on first look.2
-
Did an app for my college.
Everyone liked the features in it.
But when it came to the money part, (I didn't ask the actual cost, I only asked then 10% of actual standard cost) they were like improve it more, do this do that ("for free").
I held onto "If you're good at something, don't do it for free".
Just wasted my time in developing that.2 -
Arguing with my girlfriend (recalled from my mind, not 100% accurate)
she: What do you expect when you buy an android?
Me: sure thing apple is more "unpack it, use it", easy to use - but android is more like an empty canvas. The first thing when I buy it is setting it up to my needs.
she: You don't understand, what do you expect from your android device?
me: It has to be affordable and work for a certain time
she: No I mean, do you.. when you unpack your phone, expect it TO WORK?
me: Sure, it's not like I buy a pile of trash, I expect it to work
she: you're too stupid, baka
me: ... ? *confused*
she: When you say it is like a canvas, isn't a canvas someday full?
me: yes, every phone, iPhone, Pixel, Samsung, every phone has a limited memory
she: *mad* you don't get it, silly
me: I want to but heh, I don't get it10 -
I don't downvote much, but I definitely do when someone replies to an, "I'm back" post with, "LoL WhO tF r U?"
Don't be an asshole.15 -
When I see a space after opening bracket but none prior to the closing one... *fugly*
void func( int x);
/me hates! Do it one way or the other pleez!1 -
FUCK YOU PHP, WHY THE FUCK DO YOU GIVE ME DECEMBER 1ST WHEN I DO
strtotime('-1 month', '12/31/2015)
USING DateTime PRODUCES THE SAME FUCKING RESULT. ARE YOU FUCKING RETARDED OR WHAT?
YEAH I KNOW NOVEMBER DOESN'T HAVE 31ST BUT YOU COULD AT LEAST RETURN 30TH OR EVEN RAISE A WARNING, YOU FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT.10 -
How do you deal with a problem that feels completely over your head? I want to develop side projects but sometimes I have trouble starting/continuing when I feel like I can’t find a solution after hours of research.
Who/where do you turn to to find solutions when you run into this problem? I feel like I lose determination when I run into a wall I can’t get around.12 -
I don't generally do Javascript,... But when i do, I make sure to check its latest frameworks in last 48 hours -_- !6
-
Just love when I wake up with answers. I was trying to do this (Rant text loads -> Image place holder -> Image loads -> Image replaces placeholder) for hours last night but couldn't figure it out. Today, I did it over lunch.
-
Slack is cool and all... But do we really have to have an "account per team" ? Damn I cringed so hard when I was setting up two-factor authentication and realized it was this way... Wtf...6

I know we havent gave you any specification, documentation and not a single design but when do you think this will be done?
- Every fucking PM un the world -
I don't know why things work when I do but not for other people. 😓
Request to reset password. I did.
Said still cannot login.
I double check. Reset again and try to login. Success.
Said still cannot login with a screenshot.
😓 I think my projects hate me.2 -
Where do you go/what do you do when you need to think out a problem?
Me, I take a drive. I'm not sure why but I seem to achieve maximum clairvoyance while driving around. Moreso at night than during the day, but the effect is still there when the sun is up. It's kind of weirdly meditative, to drive autonomously, only hearing the drone of the engine and whisper of the tires.
I know a lot of people resort to showers, or straight meditation, but I was curious if there were other, quirkier things people do to arouse their mind.7 -
Thought I would only do frontend-stuff when I started working. Boy I was wrong. I thought it would be easy coding in a real company and not just in schoolprojects, boy I was way out in the blue. But when your code works and is actually used by people, I never could've imagined that would feel so good!4
-
HOW. IN THE WORLD. COULD IT BE SO DIFFICULT TO COMMENT THE CODE I WRITE MYSELF ?
After my first project (you know, the "Working project I made for fun long ago" code everyone did once, but when you look at it again it looks like sorcery and there's no way to understand it ?), I decided that I'd comment almost everything I'd do... But...
When I begin a project, it's fiiiine and I do my comments the way they should be... AND THEN, WHEN DIFFICULTIES ARRIVES AND I START TO BE TIRED (ie : always) THEY START TO INCLUDE INSULTS OR WEIRD JOKES ABOUT THE PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE, MOVIES REFERENCES, AND SOMETIMES THEIR LANGUAGE VARIES. (Like, that project you're doing in English and suddenly there's a comment written in French in the middle of that)
Soo, yeah, even if I do comment my shit now, it isn't more helpful, lol. Maybe I should listen to relaxing music when I code err.
Oh, comments. Damn comments. Someday I'll do those correctly. Maybe.8 -
I hate when I'm getting in my flow and everything starts clicking, but I have to stop to go do something else. It sucks having something almost completely solved but not having enough time to finish it.1
-
phpMyAdmin
Well, it is not my favorite open source project... I almost never have to use DBs, but when I do, it just saves my life. I can create the tables, keys without worring about any SQL command.
But day to day life is GNU/Linux, Firefox, bash/zsh, git... There are lots of opensource tools that I use, and love, everyday. :)2 -
When they introduce you to someone else who works in a completely different field of IT. "Hey, this guy works with computers as well". I do, but not in the way you think I do.
-
Don't remember who but someone here told me once, when I mentioned that I do java now, "wait till you get to reflection..."
Well it's time to suffer5 -
The president and manager where I work always say: "We have to defy the status quo". But when I say "we don't need to do that in this way, we can do it this way which is more efficient". Then they say, "We can't because we have to do everything in the same way". You are just making yourself look stupid.
-
Aw.. The face of the intern when I magically scp'd a 3 GB file to his download folder in 30 seconds... But I'm still wondering why he didn't ask anything like: coll, how can I do that too?4
-
I really feel like coding right now, but I don't have time. Problem is: when I do have time and I have to code I probably don't want to anymore.
-
When there were some coding questions to solve that I thought I can do but can't do more than 50% of them! It hurts to heart and I felt so gloomy.
-
I'm fucking frustrated.
Almost Every project, almost every task I did in the past 6 months has been a failure or partly done. Even the most trivial of tasks take me hours to complete, after immense googling and copypasting.
I know that I'm a junior with less than a year of dev experience but it feels I'm traversing through hell itself. I truly love to program, have tremendous passion and want to be a professional dev but it seems destiny itself wants me to keep doing what I do best but hate(Sysadmining).
When will this nightmare end? When will I be able to accomplish anything I need with code with so much ease, like my dev friends do? How many more courses, bootcamps should I fucking attend and how many more tutorials to watch? When will be able to work at nights without falling asleep? When will I have a fucking dev job and freelance projects instead of being a goddamn server-managing monkey?14 -
Which PC / Mobile Games you guys are playing?
I was playing League of Legends till last month but it's too TOXIC and Riot doesn't care.
So I stopped playing it from last month and started 100daysofcode challenge but as a gamer I can't survive without good game (lame).
Now I think I lost my habit of playing game like drug addict( but Still when I am bored with coding I prefer to watch YouTube).
What you guys do when you are bored with coding??16 -
When you are involved in a conflict of interest project and its kept under wraps ...but your IT director still wants you to do it because his friend needs something done but don't want to pay for it
Who else has faced this? Or am I the only one...?3 -
Logging into my school website when... WHY DO YOU USE 🤬 FRNCH FOR BOOLEAN IN THE URL M🤬F
Ok, I know this is a francophone college, but come on!5 -
The panic when I overhear my colleague in a meeting "sure I can test it in prod but we normally don't do that..."5

Not anti-man, curious about this particular problem:
Females have unique problems in the workplace and personal life yes, because of stereotypes.
I agree, I am a female. But when i read those articles about what we really go through, I really feel weak. I think if these many obstacles are present how am I supposed to do something without instinctively being influenced by the society.
It really felt better when I consider myself human not female.
What do you people do when you feel weakened by these impositions?9 -
Being on personal leave for a funeral but can't stop thinking of what I have to do when I get back to work 😣
-
It's not every day that a client reports his Website as completely down. But when they do, it's always just as I was walking out the door...3
-
Look, normally I don't give a shit how others code, but when the company's style guide is literally just the statement "use eslint", and I have to do code reviews...we will start to have problems.1
-
Idk why but when I act like a fucking loser and watch YouTube and not exercise and eat junk food all day, I do better as a developer. Why?!?!2

Hi friends.
I'm 19 years old programmer and working already. My father is 47 years old. He don't know anything about programming yet. When he was young he was good in math.
Today when I came home he said that he would like to learn programming too and help me to do some projects in the future. I know it's kind of late for him to start learning something new, but what do you think, what can I do to help him start programming? What's the startpoint for 47 years old man in the world of programming.
P.S. He tried to learn Java watching online tutorials but couldn't understand anything.10 -
Sometimes i want to erase all my programing skills to learn it all over again, it felt great when i instructed computer to do something, rather these days i'm asked to make computer do something, first hello world was nothing but that i what i wanted to do 😊1

Windows Updates...
I know, this topic is as old as the human race, but still.
Yesterday Windows kept whining about updates. When I went to bed I allowed windows to finally do it's updates. Now I'm back from work and the machine isn't running anymore. I thought, OK, it won't annoy me this evening.
But I overlooked the one essential thing about windows updates.
IT WILL DO THE MAIN WORK WHEN IT BOOTS THE NEXT TIME!
When I explicitly tell you to do the updates, you will barely do anything but turning off! And the next time I'm trying to use you, you will do a shit ton of things and lock me out while doing so.
When it says that it'll update, shouldn't it install and reboot until it's done? Am I the one who's crazy?
Instead of "working" with the computer, I'm stuck with this shit.2 -
I feel so much better when I actually talk through problems I’m having with a project with someone that can help me brainstorm. It sometimes makes me feel bad because I didn’t do it myself, but there’s also a lot of things that I learn through the process.2
-
I enjoy helping people but jez, just learn to read. Why do I need to explain to 15 people what to do, when there's a document with simple instructions to follow ?
How the fuck do you think I do ? I am not a genius, you are just dumb3 -
I love it when a friend calls for help... i really do. But why the fuck it's all about hacking someone's account.2
-
So, spent half a night setting up Travis CI. Just couldn't understand how CI will improve productivity...? But man when it worked... I wondered why I did not do it early... It even sends notification to my Slack channel...!!3

When you tell someone not to download unauthorised apps on work devices for fear of malware and they do it anyway, and malware appears and they say:
"But I thought apps on the Play Store are safe!"7 -
Things I get paid for but shouldn't:
Yesterday afternoon with an extra half hour staying late trying to work out why my code doesn't do what I think it should be doing.
Things I don't get paid for but should:
The 5 minutes in the shower this morning when I worked out what I'd fucked up.1 -
I hate it when people use like 7 "if" statements instead of like.. 2? And when they do not nest "if"s.
For ex. :
if(condition1 && condition2){
}
if(condition1 && condition3){
}
.....
" But I am writing it out longer to understand better! "
Yet it eventually stays that way with like 50 lines of "if"s..1 -
Why do I have a hard time finding a new job when senior devs are not only changing the data model, but naming keys "key" and "value"!?
"Oh look, a SQL error."2 -
My team now does daily mini-standups: what you did, what you will do, what's blocking u
But with this wfh, I feel like slacking more or just seen to have less critical work to do... but not sure if the other guys are just "padding their list" or actually really busy.
So wondering when I have nothing to do for work/no defined deadlines or deliverables... How do you look busy?
I do have a lot of optional tech debt improvement work I could do but basically these are like backlog... And not really fun.6 -
Somehow I keep thinging that dyson is judging my cooking skills when I see this, all I smell is spices and herbs but nooooooo
Mr air quality do not approve4 -
What do you do when you don't feel like doing anything?
Suddenly can't think of anything I want to do... But can't sleep either...4 -
fucking T_PAAMAYIM_NEKUDOTAYIM when you want to reproduce it to someone, who does't believe this, I simply cannot do it, but if you want to just do your thing, it gets you on every corner6

I remember the promise I made to myself when I dropped out of university to look for work.
"I'll explore different areas of software engineering since I like a number of them. But never shall I ever do backend web development"
Guess what job I landed.1 -
Just when i somehow accepted that Austrian part of team is naming theirs methods in Deutch, i almost got heart attack when i saw this. They're combining english with deutch, for example isOffen(), isLoeschenAllowed(), isEinsichtHinzufuegenAllowed() and so on... And most of the time these assholes even dont add javadoc, but when they do it something like: "Checks if *curentClass* is offen". Thanks a fucking ton.3
-
I don't always commit the changes in SQL, but when I do, I commit more than 3 times just to make sure.1
-
Just wondering, what kind of music do you listen to when you're programming ?
I usually listen to trance when I really have to focus on coding, helps to clear my head, but I do listen to other stuff when i'm working at a more relaxed pace.10 -
man this google android documentation fuckin sucks shit
i have NO idea in what order to read the document
they did a great job separating components into each different category but there are a lot of categories that use the knowledge of other categories so all of them are dependent on one another
and even when i read the documentation, they explain it like this in steps:
1. do this
2. do this
3. do this
7. do this
8. do this
45. do this
83. do this
84. do this
85. do this
and for the last step, step 2357 do this3 -
I was probably about 5 when I got this. It took 8 AA batteries and all I knew was how to get it to do tic tac toe. All other games confused me but I loved it. I wanted more.1

!rant but a question
Anyone has a dumb/plain explanation of these?
I was like WTF is that when I discovered those options.. I googled and it's connected to arabic language.. but I cannot find any explanations what each of those options do..
So if anyone know and has the time and patience to clarify, please do! Thanks in advance!3 -
Been a really long time since I posted on here. Sucks when you get stuck in a lab that bans cellphones.
BUT I got a new job now. No classified stuff. I can actually talk about what I do specifically now!!! And after a week I can almost maybe do my job one day.7 -
when a senior and tech lead write conflicting PR comments ~1 week apart

I'm typically very humble about my work. There's a certain project that I enjoy a lot. It is challenging to me, which is something important to me. I learn a lot.
Colleagues do not enjoy the project in the way that I do. In fact, most of them don't like it or try to avoid when they can. When they can't, they often consult with me about the project. I have a genuine curiosity and interest in it.
However, there is one aspect of it that I don't like at all, but I deal with it. It comes with the territory, I guess. What IS discouraging and turns me away from it though, is when colleagues "get the better end of the deal" when it comes to making special arrangements for this project. Sure, make me dedicated to it for a period of time so that I stay focused on the topic, but yet, kind of do the same for another team member but reward the other person with not having to also deal with the particular task I don't enjoy. Give them the pieces I enjoy and stick me on the pieces I don't.
I know this is a very general post and it probably makes no sense, but I needed to let off some steam and still keep it somewhat anonymous. I work hard for this project and I often don't take credit when it's given to me / when I should be taking it. It's just discouraging how things are arranged sometimes.2 -
I'm the kind of person that can type without looking at the keyboard. But... I don't really know how to type, I just do it unconsciously. But when someone reminds me of the keyboard, or I think on the keyboard. I can't stop looking at it when typing. Suddenly I forget how to type. fuck fuck fuck now I can't stop looking at it.l ksajfn;laksj fpdsbaf;dsajfn4

alert("Really bad english here");
I need to study.
I want to study.
But I can't.
I am 16 year old and I am in school. When I'm not studying for tests, I am programming something. I'm not finding time to do anything else. Just getting stressed.
Anyone in here started coding early too?
How do you separate time for school and for coding?8 -
Project isn’t motivating me but I want to finish it but I can’t finish it because I’m not motivated to do it.
Should I keep going and come back when I feel motivated, or just keep going even though it’s a tough one.6 -
How do you guys like my new sticker. It came directly from china as a freebie with a phone case i ordered. When looking at my laptop i'm super cringing but also smiling xD.2

I don't like it when guys use emojis when chatting with me. I find it weird.
But when girls do it, I like it. It's hot.🔥9 -
Do you have to be a math genius to program?
I myself hate math but have been programming for a hobby in about 3 years now.
I keep hearing that you have to know a lot of math to program even though i usually only use basic math when i do.9 -

I need help, I have a very small attention span and motivation in general, I only do stuff when under pressure. Does anyone have any tangible suggestion on how to improve that, generally but even more so in coding, I'm at the beginning still but I do have a learning appetite but I just can't get myself to do shit!
Share some of that super motivation and learning tips!
Thx!18 -
Sometimes when I think to myself "I got this deadline but I have to do my job the right way" I remember that I'm opposing craftsmanship to economics. And sadly, economics always wins.
-
Quick question. How do i get myself to believe that I am good enough. I am good at what I do people tell me and i really want to move towards part time lecturing but the idea terrifies me... But i really want to help others and currently just being needed when others need me doesnt make me feel i am able to help others enough..
In short, how do you deal with an internal problem with wanting to help but being afraid others wont take ke seriously.4 -
Finally have some side project in mind but now I don't have the time. When I had time I was not well mentally to do anything. When is the cycle going to break? Work - burnout - recover - repeat 😣2

I dont get it... I dont understand what my manager expects me to do when I am not really allowed to make design decisions, but there is no design at all! What are we doing here, manufacturing spaghetti? Today I asked my co-worker what our product should actually do exactly when its finished. He said he is not so sure either. And our manager is now on vacation so we cant ask what exactly he wants...

What hours do you work?
I work 9-6, most people at my office work 7-4 or 8-5. I have the flexibility to work when I want, but never get to bed early enough to start earlier than 9. I feel behind when I get in the office because most of my coworkers and clients have already been at for an hour or 2.
When do you work and why? Can you tell if it’s impacted your career at all?16 -
Help me out,
Being a front end dev I suck at back end. I can do some stuff but some of the concepts and other things I really struggle to grasp.
Sometimes when I’m real clueless or have no idea how to do a task the best thing to do is ask one of the senior roles but whenever I ask him he rolls his eyes and huffs and puffs. I get it dev is quite a independent thing and you should do research etc. But it makes me feel so bad and I suck as if I don’t get the question he asked correct or I don’t understand he gets real impatient. I really do try I don’t want people to do it for me of course so I want to to understand but I just get moaned at. What do I do???4 -
when the job requirement says AngularJS or ReactJS but interviewer wants you to provide solution using ReactJS which you have never worked in.

Dad: Hey, how do I make a program work when it's not working?
Me: Guess what, I've looking for the answer to that exact same question for a while now, but I still haven't found it. I'll make sure to tell you when I do.
(Clarification: He's not a dev, he was actually talking about some 10 year old version of some program not launching in Windows 10) -
How do you guys get better at programming?
I'm very new to this sphere and currently I'm learning C++ (think strings, bools and early stages of if/else) due to university course and I have fun with it during labs, but when I have to do something by myself from scratch, I reach a certain point and then I get stuck. I try re-reading the lectures but I can't find appropriate solution for the issues I face.
Do I keep doing simple tasks or do I just watch/read guides or tutorials? What is your input on the matter, fellows? :)4 -
Love it when I try to find a free Web hosting to do a little testing online... But All of them have a broken PhpMyAdmin panel. >.<12

!rant.. When the client makes you do something stupid, and you try to tell them, but they still want it, so you give it to them, and weeks later, they come back asking you to revert it.... ugh!!
I wanna comment on the jira "I hate to say I told you so, but I told you so!!!" so bad..6 -
Okay so Im just stuck. Ive not programmed in a few weeks I wanna say, and when I do I go on the binge and then I "take breaks" to relieve the stress because I want to just relax but I dont force programming out of my life I also think about better ways to do stuff but I feel like shit because I want to just enjoy and relax with some games but I enjoy and LOVE programming but I just dont know what to do. because I want to enjoy some of the games I got for christmas but I want to keep improving and I feel if I go a day without it just that much shittier for not. and I cant see how much Ive improved. I just cant relax and feel good about it.

How do i handle code review as a junior developer?
I understand its need and I don't want to skip it.
But I feel under confident after code review when my mistakes are pointed out. They always seem so trivial and wonder how did I even miss them. How should I handle such situations? And how do I improve from here?6 -
I dunno for you guys and I am sorry in advance but what is jira? "a proprietary issue tracking product providing bug tracking, issue tracking and project management functions" right?
so why the fuck do I need to write a fucking "Log Work" when I pee, when I poop, when I go out taking a break, when I drink coffee...2 -

When everything kind of just clicked.
I was struggling with learning how to program for quite some time when I first started, but one day I'm not sure what happened but everything clicked. It all started making sense and I felt like I could do anything with code. It was on that day that I knew I was going to be a dev for life. -
Errh... I'm sick as fuck, just the day when we should begin the C++ inheritance. I stay at home today so that's good but I would like to work on the C++ concepts, I don't want to be late...
Anyway, I can do the exercises at home but like I said, I'm sick as fuck so, I don't know what I should do : rest or work?1 -
I don't get annoyed so easily I think.. but when it comes to HTML... why the f*** do the comments have to look like something the cat just shat out?? Why doesn't it support one-line comment?? It's such a struggle to type...2

Need some advice.
A few programmers told me when I started programming that instead of learning many languages, just focus on one that I am comfortable with and try to get really good at it.
But when I look at other people's resumes or Devrant profiles, most of them have multiple languages in their skill set.
That's why I have been exploring different languages but haven't found the one yet that I think I like the best.
What should I do now? Explore more?6 -
Sometimes i feel bored of developing but i wan't to, i don't know how to explain this feeling. Do you guys sometimes feel the same ? Like i have a lot of things to do, i would like to learn new things but when i launch Unity for example i feel lazy, bored of it.
I'm stressing about my further carier, will i feel the same and so, stop developing as a job ?
I don't know if i'm the right post subject, and sorry for my english btw.2 -
I don't usually tell my extended family that I work remotely but when I do, I have to explain what I do, how I do it and how did I get it.
Working remotely is very rare where I'm from. I only know one other guy does work remotely and thats it. -
I'm at that point again where I question whether I want to still do computer stuff for work, but this time I kinda want to do part-time computer work and part-time physical work instead..
If my body is this bad when I'm not even 30, I wonder how I can do this sedentary job until retirement..3 -
What do devs here do when lack of motivation strikes hard? I have lots of projects in Swift and RN in progress but zero drive to touch them.
Asking for a friend ... 😂7 -
I have a strong web dev background so um doing a bit of logical programming now...
Reading those tutorial I got sooo excited because of how they always say
"Programming is when you give a computer instructions what to do and how to do it"
But the truth is Its when a computer tells you how to tell it what to do and how to tell it how to do it....
SO WHO IS CONTROLLING WHO??1 -
TL;DR Asus is a scumbag company when it comes to software.
I love Asus, they make awesome hardware but man do they blow ass when it comes to software and their customer support. They had perfectly working Link To MyAsus app (on Windows and Android) but no no no, we have to release updates and break this shit. Now I cannot use my phone as a webcam.
Fuck this shit.5 -
Hi everyone... Great to be back but not feeling so great. I keep feeling... "tired", "bored", like everything I do has no fucking meaning. Like I lost all of that fun I had when I was making my own projects. I get home at 6PM from work and it feels like time passes by so fast. I can't even muster up the enthusiasm to start my own personal projects.
What do you do when you feel like this? How can I get back my enthusiasm?8 -
How do you deal when people ignore you avoid you but didn't understood you??? I explained over and over and over again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😤😤😤😤😖😖3

Been programming Java for like 20 years. I mean, not like constantly throughout, but a fair amount.
Still, even knowing the exact answer, when that damn Java Updater pops up I'm like "why the fuck do I need this???"1 -
I really shouldn't use devRant before going to sleep, but that's at least currently the only own and peaceful time I have during week days because of really busy school and work schedule. (Yey, it's weekend!)
If I don't realize that I should stop using devRant at night it moves my sleeping time so that I don't get enough sleep or I won't be able to wake up in a timely manner.
I just immerse in the reading, commenting or even ranting so that I forget the passing of time. Making thing worse is that when I'm writing something my inner perfectionism wakes up and I try to make the text as good as possible and so I get more and more active when I should be relaxing and getting ready to sleep.
Do not worry about my sleep. I'll probably just start to read a book instead. But when it's a good time to use devRant then... 🤔
When or how do you use devRant?
What kind of sleep routines do you have? -
So I have an important decision... Do I stay up late to watch the Google Hardware Conference Stream... I love sleep... But I want to know some of that sweet juicy hardware...
And when I can buy my pixel 2 XL boiiiiiiiiiiiiii1 -
How does everyone get their team members to shut the fuck up and use IRC once in a while? I don't mind talking but if you're doing it *all* the time, *even when I have headphones on* I don't have any time to do actual work.1

I want to start another project but I have no idea what the hell to create. I was thinking of a Twitter Bot but idk what to make it do. I just want to make something.
One of the worst programming feelings is the feeling you get when you want to make something but have no inspiration or drive to even think of a good objective (whether it’s something I get hyped about or not)1 -
Why do I keep on gaming when I know I should be coding and improving! Frustrates me but I keep on doing it.5

Google made sure that devs understand Layout Editor has lots of bug fixes in AS 3.4,
I'm now at 3.4.1 and that thing still crashes (stops responding to changes unless I do them in XML) when I just add a damn new control in an empty window!
I hope they get it right anytime soon.
So my situation right now:
XCode shit when writing code but has some robust Layout Editor
Android Studio: Amazing when writing code but shit when using Layout Editor
Guess one can't get the best in at least one of them :\3 -
When and how do you improve documentation?
I dont mean "added new/refactored code, gotta document it" but active improvement.
Which feeback channels do you have for your docs?3 -
working in a single file, not separating stuff properly. I don't do that for work related stuff, but I'm very lazy when it's a personal project4

was developing a custom website for a friend, coz i primised him id do so.
but when i actually developed it i felt lazy midway so i made one table store json strings and used it for every type of data he has on his website.
everything works fine and fast, its nothing he would notice but...
am I going to hell?9 -
My project will persist anything.
Anything I input in a form.
Anything

How do you boomerang a PC ? -
Ok so I love being a programmer, but I've been programming for about 6-7 years now and to this day, have nothing to show for it.
I hate that I'm a no compromise sort of person but it means I just can't settle for something, I want to deliver a flawless and engaging product with plenty of polished features, but I'm 1 person trying to do what teams of devs do.
I even have a couple programmer friends that a couple years ago were begging to collaborate with me for there project but as soon as I ask them about collaborating they suddenly have a different view -,-
What do you guys do when motivation and moral starts wearing thin? :-/
Not having anything get completed is really bringing me down!2 -
I work on my high school's tech team but all we do is hardware replacement work which I've been doing since I know how to read disassembly instructions. (I was a bored destructive kid)
I thought I was going to enjoy work and learn. Now all I do is work with immature children who know nothing and learn programming on my own when we don't have parts in
Also attempt to educate my 'coworkers' when we do have software issues I know about -
I keep my desk at work uncluttered, and I haven't set up a workspace at home yet, but when I do, the pride of my desk will definitely be my namesake.

I just spent an hour researching about how to do this thing in a particular JavaScript framework when I remembered I can do it in CSS 🤣 I'm so embarrassed I really need to practice my vanilla
Worst of all I did find StackOverflow answers with the framework solution but it's so easy in CSS -
So this is just something I'm curious of, but when following guides/tutorials how do you challenge the information you're learning? like how do you retain the information.
I typically take notes and make something different with the information but Ive just always wondered how others go about it.15 -

But it's new and fancy.
But unreadable..
What should I do?3 -
Hey guys,
I'm trying to convert a SVN repository to Git and I want to keep the history. Installation instruction for a program written in Python:
> pip install MyProgram
Ok but I do not have pip, so I install it... Oops, needs Python 3 but linux has Python 2 installed by default. I try to start the program; it crashes.,...
People using Python, are you serious??????????? 👏👏😳 So it is possible to install a program written in Python only if I f*ck around with Python versions? I have both 2 and 3 installed but how the hell do I know what version is used when I run pip? I set global alias python=python3 but it did not help. RIP.8 -
A few people have posted about their Linux teachers/classes. Please excuse my ignorance, but what do you learn in these classes?

Practice, practice, practice. Was 20 when I learned programming in uni. I found it so hard. But I created the time to do all the homework and did as many stupidly difficult side projects as I could of. I probably never finished one since I could barely nest an if-statement in a loop, so forget that homebuilt pension calculator.
But... I learned so much by failing all those projects. Still try to do as much stupid stuff as I have time for and I heartily recommend every programmer to do the same.
Start 100 projects, maybe 10 of them are viable. And of those 10 only 1 will work. But you'll learn the most from the other 99. -
In the time between my 1st and 2nd semesters I had this course to help develop our soft skills. In one of the classes the teacher asks what we wanted to do when we finish our courses and when I said I wanted to make games someone snickered behind me 😒 maybe I was a bit too enthusiastic (I'm super pumped about it, I just wanna be out there and make games and make people happy. It may sound childish but it's what I want to do. After all, I'm still 14 😜 (jk, people look at me and think I'm younger than I really am. I've been even "put" in 5th-8th (12-15) grade once, when I was in xmas vacations from uni, early this year)) but no need to be rude 😒
-
Best part for me is when you see the final product. I do not mean once you're done working on the entire project (which is never true, always more to do! xD) but when you add a feature and it works.
Actually seeing it work, that gives me such a good, fulfilling feeling.
That has always been what attracted me to programming, or.. the main thing. -
My friends don't understand what it's like to be a dev so when I ask for times/arrangements they think I'm just being a prick about it. Sometimes I ask for specific times because I have to do pull requests and what not and I want to arrange it to maximize little downtime but because none of these guys are Devs they don't understand. How do I help these guys understand that me asking for specific times isn't about me being a prick, it just has to do with work because when I tell them that they don't get it3
-
When you guys are learning something/learning to make something, are you usually looking it up, watching a video, or reading a book? Or are you trying it on your own without knowledge on how?
I tend to either learn to do something from tutorials or books. But if I feel like I have an idea I’ll try it but then hit the books or internet if not.
How do you guys tackle learning something you haven’t before?8 -
I get the point of a daily check in meeting for the team. I really do. But when all it is is pushing pet projects and bitching about shit that has nothing to do with the entire team, it gets tedious. Also, why are product managers so needlessly optimistic and peppy? It's early in the morning. Stop it.2

Alright so I’ve already made a few posts about this but this time I kinda just want a general discussion and these are some questions I have.
So when you look at a open source project or just any project that you haven’t messed with, how do you start,
How do you handle messy code,
How do you know how to navigate the project or get around the confusion on the layout of the file,
How do you make sense of how/why the project is organized the way it is,
There have been times where I’ve tried and used one of the projects but it doesn’t work when it is supposed to already be working how do you handle those moments when there’s no error messages,
and (if you’re me) how to build/run the project
These are some of the major problems I run into when I try to start and they intimidate me heavily when I start to try to contribute to a project. I know I can just adjust the documentation or spell check which I will, but I also want to fix some bugs or add sumn. But yeah these are just things that I have problems with because I’ve only really ever worked with my code and projects so this is all still new to me and I’d like to hear your thoughts20 -

I see a lot of people saying they are programmers and they can't fix other shit. But I mean, using that brain to do other things won't surely kill you. I know you don't have time, but it may be worth taking a while to focus on fixing something else. Just to know how to do it. I do a lot of electronics, but occasionally I've been a plumber, an electrician, a painter and a mechanic.
That said, I know, I'm 17 and I surely hadn't the full programmer experience yet, but I'll try to keep this attitude when I grow up.3 -
Biggest life saving difference between eclipse and IntelliJ . I don't need to do cltr + s in IntelliJ but in eclipse I need to keep saving changes .
I have lost lot of changes when working with eclipse .2 -
I never worked as freelancer, but I'm thinking to start as far as I keep studying, and I was wondering... How do freelancers charge their client when they get paid x per hour?
How do they assure the client they worked for a certain amount of hours?
Do they do it by prediction or they say they'll work y hours per day?
Feels like a dumb question...2 -
What do you mean, why have I not sent you the changes yet?
"But you said you will send the changes now"
No I said I will send the changes now now.
"When is that?"
NOW!!! NOW!!! bye.2 -
I really do like VSCode but it is still lacking some features that i find essential.
There is no intellisense when for HTML in a PHP File. Although CSS Autocompletion works in HTMl Files. Quite Annoying2 -
So I've been on vacation for a week now, still two days to go until I get back to work.
It's been super fun, but I am getting pretty stressed about the shit-ton of work I have to do when I come back.
How do you let go?2 -
I'm not lazy. If you want me to build you a typeface - I'll learn how to do it... and I'll do it ~ but when I get files like this... my brain just goes blank. I don't even know how to rename these. Even if I automate it... I don't know what any of them are. : /3

My team has a pathological need to NOT comment! What the fuck!! I think it is because a lot of it is actually magic, so they don't want to admit ignorance. My code is full of "not sure why it works, but breaks when removed." Chunks. That way, when debugging, I actually know what is going on????
I am currently going through and editing someone else's code, and I see code that has no clear purpose, even when removed! Does it do something I don't see??? Does it do nothing?? Fuck! -
What do you do when your team ignores you but they're needed because it's to clean up/change their shit?
Lately it seems I get a lot of issues and they are all caused/created by monkeys...
I now feel so unmotivated I think I'm gonna work from home for the rest of the week....1 -
What do you all do when you literally have nothing to do at work? I get ultra bored and start reading manga but I feel bad and scared that my boss might consider me useless. Just want to know if this is somewhat normal behaviour sometimes?26
-
is it better to work on a project every day even when i dont feel like it but then do like 80% of the work for the next milestone with a shitty code (done alot faster)
or
work on a project when i have the will to work on it but then do 30% of the work for the next milestone with a clean code? (done alot slower)3 -
Damn. I just noticed im getting kinda fat. My belly is bigger than before in 2020 when i used to exercise almost daily. I either need to eat less or shit more, to get the weight out. Fuck. I must start working out. But its hard to do when its cold. I only workout during summer outside. Urghv19

As free software I guess you have to not be pedantic, but still felt like this was unnecessary when I feel like I having nothing to do with this political change nor will I have the ability or inclination to actively do something about it.3
-
I know there will always be new things to learn... But...
How do you guys deal with that overwhelming feeling that strikes when you start to think about how many things are there to study/research/understand yet?
Do you even feel it at all?2 -
How do u stay civil when your code doesn't work and it's been hours? I feel like punching something but I swear I'm not really violent. I just feel like it.3
-
Every day when I wake up I thing today is the day I start to create codeignitor application but I am not do anything ?????why this happen2
-
Hope you don’t hate me, but I have a confession to make. When I’m on mobile, I like safari better than chrome. No explanation, I just do.5
-
Why do I always get errors when I am trying to learn something by following YouTube tutorials like I follow every single step, write the same code but I get errors. I feel like giving up sometimes13

That moment when you really want to try swift but Ubuntu. I can do this on Mac(in house) but I prefer laptop with Ubuntu in work 😩2
-
How many lines of code should one be looking at at any given moment? Of course you could zoom, but how many lines do you guys think is ideal?
Currently I have 33 when in full screen.3 -
! Rant
How do you guys keep from procrastinating?
When at work, I do my job, everything is well, even though sometimes I just stare into the distance for 5 minutes but it isn't hindering me. However, personal projects, studying etc... I just can't seem to keep myself focused...
Any tips? Any advice?2 -
What do you do when you're trying to push yourself further by learning new concepts and techniques but start to feel the burnout closing in?
Usually I'm useless for about week if I push myself too hard. Would love to overcome this.
How do you guys handle this?4 -
I just literally hate the situation when I know what to do, BUT! There's actually always this invisible "But". '"But" you need to configure "that" first, "but" it can't be configured because of that "but" version that we have and that "but" version is incompatible with whole project and you need to go with this whole "BUTT" hell again'. Fucking hate those buts bruh....4

I want to create a condition on my webpage that only when a user is a YouTube subscriber he/she can make downloads.
Someone have any idea how i could do that? 🤔 I tried github and stack overflow but had no success
I looked on github, but had no success.11 -
I know Windows XP is ancient, but how do people legitimately get anything developed under Windows. It's legitimately frustrating. If it weren't for my sdcard wiping itself when I shutdown I'd probably be using Debian.5
-
Is rkt worth using than docker. I do know the pros for rkt over docker, but on the long run which seems to be better. My manager is worried about the memory consumption. Docker is big obviously when compared. Am I wrong?1
-
If you need to get some chores done but you are procrastinating, just try and do some work on your side project instead. Somehow my house always ends up spotless when I am trying to focus on something else.

Does anyone know how to create a live wallpaper app in Windows 10?
I found an API for setting the wallpaper filename, but I have to imagine that would be slow. When searching I am bombarded by apps that do this, but they are all pay apps. I want to know how to program this.2 -
My Dad wanted me to become a Nurse, but he was impressed when I told him I'm going to take up Computer Science since it sounds fancy hehe But til this day he doesn't remember what I do for a living so when the topic pops up in one of our conversations, I have to explain over again. My Mom tells her friends that I am a "Computer Executive", no matter how many times I correct her. 😂
-
I always try to make problems more ... interesting, fancy, challenging. As soon as it gets boring, my mind is wandering.
Like now, when I wrote like a gazillion stored procedures, connected them to the back end classes, connected them to the new WCF service methods, connected them to the front end ... That's when I try to do anything but work.1 -
It's not often that I wonder whether Software Development was the wrong career choice. But when I do have these thoughts, it usually comes after struggling with Gradle.
-
It's 3AM and here I am trying to fix the mess that I made last night when I was drunk and the deadline is 12PM (only 9 hours left).. You don't but if you do know how do I kill my boss so that I would look like a bug from a software made by our company killed him to take revenge of killing the bugs?1
-
I love stickers but I also love my laptop lid clean. Back when I was a MacBook user, I did buy a case/cover in order to place the stickers and remove them whenever I want. Do you know anything similar for regular notebooks such as a Dell Inspiron?3

I don't know how it works with my team but almost always I'm the one who is at the frontier when there is a need to migrate to new technology or to do something that nobody in my team knows how to do including me. So usually when we have planning and nobody wants to take the task I take it because someone has to do it. I think it's not my job to only do the things that I know but I'm expected to work outside my comfort zone and I wish others did the same. What happens after I'm done reading docs, testing and learning new thing is that I have to deliver training about it. The funny thing is that I also have to train experts and I'm below expert6
-
Well I will Program ai to do another job as long as possible.
When nothing else there is to do I will either find something to do or enjoy as our goal (automate things that far that we are not needed) is fulfilled.
Don't think it will ever happen but would be quite nice. -
Helping out of goodwill with the time I have only to receive nothing but terrible attitude.
I know it can get frustrating but don't throw that frustration on me. Especially when I'm genuinely helping out and going out of the way to do so. -
Why are some js functions used with a window. prefix?
I mean I kinda get it when you want to addEventListener on the window but...
Why do people use window.setInterval?2 -
I hate when I got a workshop to sharpen my skills and my boss wants me to do nothing but sit on a chair instead of learning... taking me out of the workshop

A question for people who are active on the open source community or anyone who succeeds in crwating some small personal coding projects.
How do you do it?
Do you have any advice on how to be more efficient when working on personal projects?
Each time I get an idea i try to start it but just give up or get discouraged by some related setups.
Also how do you find interesting existing projects to contribute to?
Please help. I wanna do more but never do anything. Am I alone in this situation?? I dont wanna get stuck in this loop anymore.2 -
UI/UX dev.
I've been all over the place since I started as a kid and spent the majority of last year confused as to what I really wanted to do, but it seems like ultimately I found my way back home when I met React.1 -
Yesterday I had about 50 messages come through my site's contact form, all with random (but real-looking) email addresses, but no message content. When I looked at the web stats for that day I had a big spike of about 50 visits (it's a small site) from an unknown location.
Does anyone know why someone would do this?3 -
Can someone help me I want to enjoy anime again but I can’t bring myself to watch it anymore and when I do finally put it on my passion for anime is back but I can’t bring myself to put it on I know it’s a bit crazy but can someone please help me?16

I really don't know what to do when I can't get the help that we need.
We use the initial version of Jasmine for unit testing and AngularJS (not 2, 3, 4+, but 1), so it's hard to find any good examples online to create my tests. My coworkers help, but since testing isn't something we do at all (or at least very often), they are unsure on how to help me.
I don't know what to do. I feel very unproductive and not valuable to the company at this time.2 -
Do you know something I hate? It is when you run the software it works fine in the dev environment, but then when you actually publish it outside, it just doesn't work.
That gets me so angry...1 -
I still have no idea how bit shifting and masking work. I don't have to use it in my day-to-day anymore but I briefly worked as a game developer and still occasionally do side gigs and personal game projects. When I was working on games as my day job I had to do a fair amount of masking for a bunch of different reasons. But I've never gotten the hang of it. Everytime I have to create a mask I have to Google it and then I'm like "oh yeah of course that's simple enough". But inevitably the next time I have to do it I end up back at square one.4
-
I have the weirdest mind. I cant seem to work at all or struggle alot but when it comes to after lunch walk, the hours before home. Im like a code machine and do soooo much in that time that it scares me that i can't seem to switch it on when i want1
-
I really like Linux but it makes me mad when apps I use, like Adobe XD, are available for everything but Linux.
I'm not even going to start with HBO not being able to load streams on Linux. I payed money to stare at a black screen.
I tried to use PlayOnLinux for Adobe Creative Cloud but XD doesn't even appear there.
I also hate dual booting because when I'm using Win or Linux for a bit I tend to make different desktops for different programs/IDEs/browsers and I like them to be open at all times for easy access when I want to do shit. Dual booting means having to open all this again
VMs are even worse in that they tend to be very slow and when I see choppiness when moving windows I immediately "nope" out of that shit
I can't put up with Windows's bs anymore, but not being able to use the software I need is even worse.
I don't know what to do2 -
A person calling himself a technical lead should have some knowledge about what his subordinates are doing!! It's really a mess for me when my TL says I don't know how to do it, for a problem that I have been trying for almost 4 hours, but you'll have to do it somehow!!1
-
I think I hate interfaces
I get the purpose behind them, and I understand why they're best practice in most OOP situations.
But goddamn it makes me groan when I change a parameter in a method and then find out I have go do the same in the interface as well.7 -
When I was started my journey in coding, what ever I do, I think about coding. Sleep code, eat code, dream code, dating code. Its become my usually nightmares.
Its become worst when I got stucked in coding. Ppl see me like a geek zombie.
Coding used to ruin my life.
But when my code working like charm, feel like god. I can do anything. 😂😂😂
Sometime l just love it, but most of the time I fucking hate it. -
How/when do you know that a particular programming language is correct/wrong for a particular project?
I think that language doesn't make much of a difference but again, I am new to software development. -
What are you gonna do if/when AI replaces developer/tech jobs. Not saying it'll happen but what if.
Me, I will open a convenience or drug store where I live..16 -
I don't always forget to turn off caps lock,
but when I do, it's in VIM AND WIPE OUT HALF THE FILE
you know I love you VIM1 -
I want to keep 1 year of daily indexes but for the ones older than 30 days, unloaded from memory. But accessible when needed.
So like say there's a performance issue today and I want to compare all the activity against 2 months ago. I can open the old index and search it.
Can you do that, does closing remove it from memory? Otherwise how would you do that?6 -
I think its a bit of a cliche. But when I saw "The social network" I knew this is what I was gonna do. I always loved maths, physics and logic, though. So, I guess its no surprise I ended up being a dev.2

Not a rant, but was wondering:
If I undervolt Ryzen 5 3600 using Ryzen Master from windows, do I get the changes when I boot into my Linux distro? 🤔9 -
Work on my own side projects. Even just taking notes about what to do and what to avoid. When I think my own stuff avoids the conceptual flaws which cause low motivation at work, I feel fine again! Bosses never learn, but I sure do!
-
Anyone else get janky scrolling when reading the comments on a rant? I don't know what kinda funky thing they tried to do with the scrolling but it always strongly resists me scrolling down the page.
Anyways, I have to do this in the DevTools console to stop it:
document.body.innerHTML = document.body.innerHTML.replaceAll('scroll','');4 -
To hell with this auto path rewrite VS Code, when I rename a file you find all files and rewrite the imports, but now you did it wrong
and I have a huge mess to pick, I have no idea how you did this but you wrote long paths which don't make sense
why did you put node_modules in-front of all my imports when I moved a folder which has nothing to do with node modules1 -
How I Get A Job When I Have Not Sufficient Knowledge About Backend And The JavaScript Language. JavaScript Also Very Disturbing Language, I Love To Do Programing But Sometime I'm Frustrated About How Much It Takes Time To Learn Job Ready Programming4

I could be creative but my history with certain content thieves is they adapt my ideas to glorify their weird messed up shit
Gotta do something I can’t perceive differences when all the data is the same1 -
When do you use an ExecutorService vs starting a Thread?
I tried executing a mongo.find() with service.submit() but it seems to start a new connection... or try to. The eventual error I got was something about state being closed.
Whereas thread.run() does not.2 -
Not a rant, but a question. What Spotify playlists do you guys listen to when working? Super stoked there's a community of devs that I can ask.1
-
Not exactly a tip but do you know an app for quick-testing your skills in js, for intermediate-level, but with questions that are not too complicated (not code golf, though I like that too) so one can use it when commuting for instance ?1

to method java doc or not to method java doc
i'll do whatever we're supposed to , but i dont see consistency in industry or my slave drivers
i remember when i first did i was told not to, but then a new senior hire comes in does it and nobody bats an eye1 -
How do you guys stay motivated to keep learning? I used to get existed every time I tried a new challenge, but now I just feel incredibly tired when I have to learn something to progress.1
