My mom never touched a PC or smartphone. Well, most people didn't back then, because it was the early 90s.
But I brought a borrowed SNES to the hospital and taught her to blow on the Zelda cartridge if it didn't work. She died after we finished the game.
After that my dad bought me a commodore 64, the machine that taught me about electronics and programming, and molded me into who I am today.
On the first date with my girlfriend (now 12y together) we just sat talking for hours in her room, playing Zelda on her SNES taking turns, and I told her my mom would have liked her.14 -
My girlfriend's dad asked me to fix his printer.
I open it up, pulled the cartridge, blowed some air and put it back again.
It worked.
He now thinks I am a genius.15 -
So my actual job is being a nurse at the local hospital, with coding being just a hobby. However, the way some IT–Related things are treated here are just mind-blowing. Here are some examples:
Issue: Printer is not recognized by network anymore due to not being properly plugged in
Solution: Someone has to tell the house technician, if the house technician is currently not available, ask his assistant who only works part time and like twice a week. House technician took the printer (God knows why), came back 2 days later and plugged it back in.
Issue: Printer 1 of 2 on ICU has run out of ink and since all computers default to printer 1, nobody can print.
Solution: Call the house technician, blah blah, house technician comes, takes ink cartridge of printer 2 and puts it into printer 1.
Issue: Public WiFi is broken, can be connected to but internet access is missing. Probably config issue as a result of a recent blackout.
Solution: Buy a new router, spend 5 days configuring it and complain about how hard networking is.
Issue: Computer is broken, needs to be exchanged with a new one, but how do we transfer the data?
Solution: Instead of just keeping the old hard drive, make a 182GB backup, upload it to the main file server and then download it again on the new computer.
Issue: Nurse returns from vacation, forgot the password to her network account.
Solution: Call the technician who then proceeds to open a new account, copies all the files from the old one and tells her to pick an easier password this time. She chooses "121213".12 -
Fucking printers are made by satan himself.
My printer apparently needs cyan, yellow and magenta for printing grayscale.
So suddenly my colours are empty
Bullshit but whatever, I used ducktape to tape of the little glas place where it checks inkt levels.
My printer thinks they are full and prints again. Booyah.
About 200 pages further it says they are empty again.
BULL FUCKING SHIT
The satan spawn that made my printer must have made the cartridges with a chip that has a maximum of pages. So even if the cartridge is FULL, the chip says its empty and so the printer thinks that as well
If i find the demon spawn that programmed the printers, I will make you program in brainfuck or whitespace for the rest of your life!!!!!!9 -
Random fact #0
Back in the days of SEGA Saturn, SEGA was really picky in terms of the game stability. All the games that we're about to be released had to pass a series of tests, like for instance they had to run for almost a week without any crash non stop on a real hardware, or withstand cartridge tilting. If it failed, SEGA wouldn't license it and developer had to fix the bugs and re-send it again.
To fool SEGA testers, game devs we're adding exception screens with the fake "hidden content". Like in Sonic 3D Blast, it presented a screen in the image below and then the level select screen.
So yeah, it's not a bug - it's a feature11 -
Satoru Iwata.
You might remember it as the former president of Nintendo, but he was also a very impressive programmer. As he was president of HAL Laboratories, he helped with the development of Pokémon Stadium for the Nintendo 64 by porting the Pokémon Red/Blue battle system not by having any sort of documentation, but by reading the assembly source code.
He did so to allow Game Freak's developers (who were only a team of 4 at the time) to focus on their work on Pokémon Gold/Silver. But he did more: when they had to localize Red/Blue for America, they couldn't fit everything in a cartridge. They had the same problem while developing Gold/Silver, since cartridges had at most 8 Mb of storage capacity back then, and they had to fit not only the Johto region but the Kanto one as well! So Iwata stepped in, and created a graphics compression tool which managed to make everything fit in the cartridges.
He did this while not even being part of Nintendo, and the work was so impressive that the Pokémon devs thought it was "a waste to just have [him] as president!" (ie. why not make use of such programming skills).
Truly someone I look up to.8 -
"PLEASE COME QUICKLY OUR INTERNAL NETWORK IS FUCKED!
-Uh, mam', could you describe the problem?"
Spent an hour, trying to fix this "network issue". Basic level 1 and 2 support. Can't connect using RDP on the server. No teamviewer either. Unplug, replug everything. Restart the server, the router, the switches. I knew that it was something dumb. I spent 3h on the highway.
To find.
That the fucking.
Ethernet cable.
Was plugged oN THE MOTHER FUCKING ILO PORT! FUCK HP, FUCK THIS, FUCK ME BECAUSE I SHOULD'VE ASKED FOR A PHOTO.
"It's fixed, mam'. Did you touch something when it was working?
-Uh, no, I swear. Also, could you please take a look at our printer? It's not working. It was out of ink so I changed the cartridge yesterday, but today it's not working!"
The cartridge was not inserted correctly.
Then she nicely made me a coffee, thanking me for the fix and asking what the problems were.
Just kidding.4 -
That moment when you realise your console is just a pc and the days of fast cartridge in and load game as gone and with that statement I also feel old.20

I scored a GBA sp (with Super Mario Bros 3) at my local Goodwill today for $20. I always wanted one as a kid, but I almost didn't get it cause some asshole found it first. I saw him fumble with it for a solid 3 minutes before he could get it to turn on. Finally he put the cartridge in the right way and flicked the power switch. I thought it was all over. At that point the dumbass realized it worth something but instead of buying it HE HID THE GAMEBOY AND LEFT. I wasn't going to wait for him so I bought it myself 😂.6

I want my relationship to be like a Nintendo DS cartridge. If we have any problems, take it out, blow on it, and put it back in.1

Printers come straight from hell!
I visited my grandma. She told me that she has a problem with her printer. I printed something (b/w) and looked at it. It looked really bad. The printer showed an error message saying that there's a problem with the color cartridge. I took it out, put it back in and printed again. It looked perfect. But the message appeared again.
Every time my grandma wants print or copy something (even in black and white) she needs to take out this cartridge, put it back in and pray.
One time I printed something with my paper. I have the right paper for it (A4). The printer scaled it down...
IT PRINTED A VERSION FOR ANTS!
It took several attempts and wasted paper and ink but FINALLY it came out nearly perfect.
Printers are the worst devices I've ever worked with.3 -
Fuck HP!
They make worst fucking printers in the universe. Just because I don’t have color cartridge doesn’t mean I can’t print anything in monochrome! Also apparently my black cartridge is broken, even tho it worked just a minute ago.4 -
Sometimes I wonder how software development in (bigger) teams worked in the 90s.
Take the first Pokémon games for example. It was the mid-90s and the final product would be Assembler code that goes onto a cartridge with limited space.
I believe version control systems didn't really exist back then (Git & Mercurial: 2005, SVN: 2004). So probably people took backups of the chunks of code they worked on, copied around a stitched-together code, threw everything together at the end of the day, etc. etc. ...
Does anyone here know if there is some kind of documentary about that topic or did anyone here experience that first-hand?
It would be really interesting to see how that stuff worked back then 😊4 -
I never dream about tech (at least not specific) but recently I had a dream rotating around the fact that terminators (e.g. T-800) are safe to be stored on Windows 95 as they can only boot from NES cartridge.5

I've been feeling very bad because I don't think I've been making good use of my free time. So I decided to change.
Looked at my goals, first in line, getting a driver license.
For that, I need to arrange times for practice with my dad.
For that, I need a clean timetable. I had one but teachers are lame and don't respect the times of course.
So, I need to print the new one I already had done.
So I went to the printer.
And it prints awful, everything is pink because it doesn't print yellow.
Fine, let's change the cartridge.
Printer refuses to work, it throws a stuck paper error.
My dad tries to fix it putting fingers inside. Nothing.
We suspect it's the new cartridge, change the new cartridge chip with the one the old one had. Printer fooled.
It still doesn't work. Stuck paper.
My dad admits he felt he broke something when he reached inside the printer..
We had to disassemble it and fix the broken part.
Now it works again.
It still doesn't print yellow.
We'll have get it fixed or get a new one.
I guess I have to draw my timetable by hand...
Sucks, I made it using html and flex. Every 1fr was 5'.
I'll make a gist if anyone is curious about it.1 -
ERRORS: HAIR JAM. COLOR-SAFE CONDITIONER CARTRIDGE RUNNING LOW. LEGAL-SIZE HAIR TRAY EMPTY, USING LETTER-SIZE HAIR ONLY.

post != rant #sorry
Just curious. How would one go about programming something like this? Do you guys think this machine just displays a fullscreen web app made in html/css or is there another approach with an actual programming language, not markup language that one can take? I heard it uses RFID technology to show cartridge levels, and records the time dispensed, alerts store owner when low, and brand dispensed alongside just dispensing drinks.17 -
Follow up on my printer rant.
(Quick recap: my printer uses all colours when printing black and white, and it says the cartridge is empty when it isnt at all)
I finally have it figured out.
The current cartridges dont get used (for some reason) and i bought a chip resetter. I just reset the chip of the colour cartridges and I buy a black cartridge every now and then. Essentially making my printer black and white only, just how I like it.1 -
I'm making a booklet of some handy notes. So, the old trick is print in pages of 4, to make binding easier. I spool about 60 of those and then it starts printing in my manual duplex until
*a wild blank line has been spotted*
`wat?`
I go back and see that I've not noticed a trail of white blanks that had been slowly creepily increasing in the print space where the text should be. Almost 20 of my pages are wasted. I take out the print cartridge and wipe the drum, run the cleaning sequence on a clean sheet and try to print.
Presto! good as new!
Sippin some coffee, browsing the web.. oh and woah! The blank reappears and it is now bigger. The previous 12 pages are not affected? wth
I do this whole thing again. Wipe and print. It works. And along the lines of 15 or so prints, the blank appears again, bigger and bolder. wth. I really need those prints now.
If it was broken, I'd have fixed it in the afternoon, but it is evening now. No one opens at this hour. Why is y printer fucking with me? -
<p>Do you know how clean tap water is? The answer to that question largely depends on where you live, but thinking about it is always a good idea. Drinking water is often contaminated with organic compounds, minerals, chlorine, and chemicals left over from the water treatment process. If you need cleaner water, the easiest way to do this is to get a filtered jug. This guide of <a href="https://womenselections.com/best-wa...">what is the best water filter pitcher</a> will help you find the best water filter jug for your needs and budget.</p>
<p>Filtered launchers are very diverse. To help the reader, we limit ourselves to a few outbreaks through testing and research. We tested various models ourselves, we examined a large number of launcher classifications and confirmed our own findings.</p>
<p><a href="https://ibb.co/19CRS7S"><img src="https://i.ibb.co/55Qs7G7/..." alt="best-water-filter-pitcher" border="0" /></a></p>
<p><strong>Water filter pitcher filter type</strong><br />The filter jug comes with various types of cartridges. Typically, only one type of cartridge can be used, so you cannot select the desired cartridge. The exception is if you select a brand that offers a choice between two cartridges. Each of these cases has its advantages.</p>
<p><strong>Carbon filtration</strong><br />Most cartridges use carbon and are particularly effective at filtering chlorine and its by-products, such as TTHM. These cartridges contain blocks of solid carbon or granular activated carbon (also called activated carbon). In both cases, carbon usually comes from coconut shells, but it can also be made from coal, brown coal, wood, or oil pitch. Carbon can be physically or chemically activated.</p>
<p>There are two ways to physically activate carbon. One is to heat the carbonized material to 450-900 degrees Celsius in an inert atmosphere. Usually nitrogen or argon is present. Alternatively, the manufacturer may use oxidation. In this case, the material is typically heated to 1200 degrees Celsius and exposed to oxygen.</p>
<p>Chemical activation involves the injection of various chemicals into the material. The most common chemicals are hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, zinc chloride, calcium chloride. These chemicals facilitate carbon activation. This means that the process takes less time. However, the material must be heated to 450-900 degrees Celsius.</p>
<p>As the water passes through the cartridge filter, the carbon absorbs liquid and gaseous impurities. Due to the highly porous surface and physical form of activated carbon, one gram has an absorbent surface of 32,000 square feet. Still, it becomes saturated with impurities. If this occurs, you will need to replace the cartridge.</p>
<p><strong>In the conclusion</strong><br />If you are considering buying a pitcher filter as the only filter in your home, you should know what your water contains before you buy it. Today, many launchers have successfully removed most of the harmful contaminants. On the other hand, there are still bottles that can only filter out basic contaminants. As always, I recommend that you test your water before purchasing a pitcher.</p>
<p>Whatever it is, healthy water should always be a priority. I hope my comments, suggestions and guidelines will help you buy the best <a href="https://arizonawet.arizona.edu/user...">water filter pitcher review</a>. However, if you don't think the launcher is a viable option and have considered all of the options, please feel free to visit our website. He uploaded many other honest reviews like this. I am sure you will find the best option.</p>
