Arghhh, rant time :|
So yesterday I completed a database migration of 167,000 products from an old ecommerce system to a new one. Everything was brought over, orders, customer addresses, everything, really chuffed :)
The only thing the client picked up on was the lack of his spammy "meta keywords" data that I intentionally did not import. I mean the tag isn't used and a list of 40 comma separated random words you'd like to rank for isn;t going to help the sites SEO on bit.
Anyway, the client is now moaning a lot and insisting I add them in. Even after I explained that the meta keywords is gone for good reasons he insists on keeping the data.
Soooo, pointless :|
(note the tags for the sake of satire :) )undefined meta keyword meta-key-words key-words keywords best meta keyw word meta keyword seo m-e-t-a words k-e-ywords meta key4 -
Boss:(pastes a bunch of Python code in Slack)
Boss: Need to convert a long list of ints to a comma separated string. Can you finish it for me? Need it now, I'm in a hurry!!
Me : (Delete all boss's code)
Me : input=[1,2,3,4,5,6,....] output=",".join(str(e) for e in input)
Boss: Damn you! Thanks. Brunch on me today.5 -
Whoever implemented the data import in Numbers on Mac needs to be lined up against a wall and shot with needles until they wish they were dead.
Why on all of gods unholy green and shitty earth would i want data i import (EVEN IN CSV FOR FUCK SAKE) to be delimited by an arbitrary text width? WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK
WHY WHY why would I EVER want to delimit my carefully structured data by fucking text width instead of new line or comma? AAAAARRRHHH
And what fucking big brain genius made this the DEFAULT SETTING for imported text AND CSV FILES. IT STANDS FOR COMMA SEPARATED FILE YOU FUCK BOI MAYBE JUST MAYBE I WANT IT SEPARATED BY FUCKING COMMMMMMMAAAAASSSSSS9 -
I just got four CSV reports sent to me by our audit team, one of them zipped because it was too large to attach to email.
I open the three smaller ones and it turns out they copied all the (comma separated) data into the first column of an Excel document.
It gets better.
I unzip the "big" one. It's just a shortcut to the report, on a network share I don't have access to.
They zipped a shortcut.
Sigh. This'll be a fun exchange.3 -
Funny thing just happened. I called my bank to verify my card with Apple Pay. Here’s how it went:
> Calls bank with number supplied by phone.
> “Thank you for calling [Bank] Bank!”
> ...
> A minute passes and still ringing
> wtf.jpg
> About thirty seconds in and the ring seems fainter than before.
> [2:00] is it just me or is my speaker dying...
> [3:00] no, it’s definitely getting quieter.
> [3:30] why is no one picking up???
> [4:00] now it’s so bad I have to hold it to my ear
> [4:30] now it’s blending in with the white noise
> [4:45] yeah, no. This is only static now.
> [5:00] this’ll be good for DevRant...
> calls again
> same thing happens
> ohwell.mov
Let’s try again tomorrow, I guess.
Edit: like always, I forgot the picture9 -
So I started in a new job a week ago for a two weeks probation period, im getting payed double than my last job but it's so professionally frustrating.
They use a full php stack with a framework called tinymvc that I never heard of and the last commit is from 2009.
Beside this they implement some sort of "flexible" MVC where a great amount of the logic are inside the views. They have one model for each entity (in theory) but in reality one model have methods for a lot of tables.
Beside this the i18n is done by querying the database for all the translation strings and copying it in every user session, so every session file it's about 400kb where around 380 are duplicated translations.
The views folder is empty because they decided to modify the framework to look for the views in another folder called resource's and the development must be done connected directly to the production database
Above all this shit all the many-to-many relations in the database (MySQL) are handled creating a comma separated field on one of the tables, completely breaking the reference integrity.
So, after a week of work I can't stop thinking who the fuck developed this? In which world this shit is okay? How can I work around this big lake of shit?7 -
Working with atlassian products....
Possibility 1
You can either use exactly this one way and only with these specific instructions ...
Which will certainly not work for the project you have.
Possibility 2
There is an feature request which gets ignored for years, someone made a plugin...
But plugin was removed as inactive. :-)
Possibility 3
Atlassian provided in their endless graciousness a plugin.
After hours of deciphering Kotlin / Java code as the documentation is either useless or lacking details...
You did it. You got the REST shit working.
Well.
You just needed a script which wraps the underlying command, parses the commands well defined format like XML with specification.... To a completely gobbled up JSON, that looks like undecipherable shit.
I really hate Atlassian.
https://bitbucket.org/atlassian/...
I just wanted to add code coverage via the REST API by the way.
A really unnecessary and seldomly used future as it seems.
And yeah... The JSON contains a coverage element which contains a semicolon separated key value store, value being a comma separated list of line numbers....4 -
Has anyone ever wanted to be ignored? Like talking to an empty void, not wanting a response? Just want to be alone?11

Wrote a SQL stored procedure today to do a complicated query. Decided to make it so that I could pass multiple records into the stored procedure in comma separated format, but the damned thing would only pull the first record. The query worked fine outside the procedure but it wouldn't pull anything more than the first record. After deleting and recreating and spending 30 minutes trying to figure out what was wrong I realized I changed the length of the wrong parameter. Set the correct one to varchar max and it was all good. 30 minutes of my life I will never get back.🐘💨1

I was gonna complain about why it is not clear how the tags should be used...
Then saw the placeholder "Tags (comma separated)" -
One of the things that I like the most regarding Clojure(and most Lisps to be honest) is how "not for beginners" the ecosystem feels.
Don't get me wrong, setting up a project in lein with dependencies(both internal and external) is a cakewalk, installing lein or boot is a cakewalk. Setting environment consts and middleware etc etc is a cakewalk.
Its just that there are no blogs about convoluted and amateurish ways of doing things. Most presentations and articles are written by really experienced and talented individuals.
I dunno, its just a nice shift in community. Its nice to see people not fucking up Object Oriented programming in java or any of the other oop languages. Its nice not seeing people giving horrible advice regarding memory management in C or c++ and it is sure as shit nice to not see spaghetti php und js code.
And my productivity levels are off the charts man. Really liking this shit and I get to stay inside my JVM -
Aight, so today hasnt been a good day so far, yesterday I stayed up late working on a side projext im getting paid for coz I had to deploy today, i didnt finish because I spent hours trying to get the crappy html with some awful jquery libraries to work with angular, seriously this guy uses the bullet character instead of <ul>, after my cellphone fell during the night and I didnt hear the alarm so I arrived 1 1/2 hrs late to work, now that Im here I cant work because my pc says
The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failedrant screw windows bad bosses tags (comma separated) useless tag dumb side projects pichardo for president another tag3 -
I'm shitting there hammering out some code butchering some real problems when I suddenly realise I'm surrounded. I look around and yes it's the bloody committee.
The committee is what I call the rest of the department and it is dominated by the old guard which comprises of the programmers that have been around for longer.
None of the old guard can program particularly well but because they had been around the longest they'd all grown senior. The committee had free reign but anyone else doing anything differently has to get approval from the committee.
The only way to code otherwise was to copy and paste existing code then to primarily rename things. If anyone did anything that hadn't been seen before then it would have to be approved by the committee. Individual action was not permitted unless you were old guard.
I swept my headphones away expecting it to be something unimportant. It was.
First things first they announce. We're going to add extraneous commas to the last element of all possible lists separated by comma including parameters or so they say. Ask but why so I do.
Because the language now supports it. They added support for it so it must be the right way someone proclaimed. Does it? I didn't realise we were waiting for it. Why do we want it though?
Didn't you hear? It's all over the blogosphere. It massively improves merge requests. But how I ask?
Five minutes later I grow tired of the chin stroking, elbow harnessing, slanted gazes into the yonder and occasionally hearing maybe its because and ask if they mean when you for example add an element the last element registers as changed from adding a comma. Turns out that's all it is.
How often do we see that tiny distraction and isn't it pointless to make the code ugly just for a tiny transient reduction in diff noise I ask. Everyone's stumped. This went on and on and got worse and worse. But it makes moving things around easy half of them say in unison like the bunch of slobs that they are. I mean really. It doesn't make expanding and contracting statements from multiline to single line easy and it's such a stupid thing. Is that all they do all day? Move multi-line method parameters up and down all day? If their coding conventions weren't totally whack they wouldn't have so many multiline method prototypes with stupid amounts of parameters with stupidly long types and names. They all use the same smart IDE which can also surely handle fixing the last comma and why is that even a concern given all the other outrageously verbose and excessive conventions for readability?
But you know what, who cares, fine, whatever. Lets put commas all over the shop and then we can all go to the pub and woo the ladies with how cool and trendy we are up to date with all the latest trends and fashions then we go home with ten babes hanging off each arm and get so laid we have to take a sick day the following to go to the STD clinic. Make way for we are conformists.
But then someone had to do it. They had to bring up PSR. Yes, another braindead committee that produces stupid decisions. Should brackets be same line or next line, I know, lets do both they decided. Now we have to do PSR and aren't allowed to use sensible conventions.
But why, I ask after explaining it's actually quite useful as a set of documents we can plagiarise as a starting point but then modify but no, we have to do exactly what PSR says. We're all too stupid apparently you see. Apparently we're not on their level. We're mere mortals. The reason or so I'm told, is so that anyone can come in and is they know PSR coding styles be able to read and write the code. That's not how it works. If you can't adjust to a different style, a more consistent style, that's not massively bizarre or atypical but rather with only minor differences from standard styles, you're useless. That's not even an argument, it's a confession that you've got a lump of coal where your brain's supposed to be.
Through all of this I don't really care because I long ago just made my own code generators or transpilers that work two ways and switch things between my shit and their shit but share my wisdom anyway because I'm a greedy scumbag like that.
Where the shit really hit the fan is that I pointed out that PSR style guide doesn't answer all questions nor covers all cases so what do we do then. If it's not in PSR? Then we're fucked.4 -
Debugger still throw an exception, you looking for a bug for hours . Couple hours later someone remands you that CSV is comma-separated but your file has semicolon!!! Wwrrrrr
When I working too long I make noobs mistakes.1 -
So i rant too
I was workink with 50y+ guy who think he knows programming
Its 1/5 rant about him
So he told he share his data through csv ( comma saparated values) but his own implementation
So he shared data in his own csv separated with sharps
I told to him about standardas. His reply was: he know lol
Its my share 1/ 10 wait for it the last will kill3 -
Commas being used as a decimal point are the absolute bane of my damn existence. And what's worse, they are used in csv files with a semicolon as a delimiter. It is comma separated values ffs not a semicolon separated comma separated random fucking shit that's against the fucking syntax of every damn language. Fuck whichever dimwit that thought using commas as a decimal separator was a good idea.7

a "configurable" confirmation system, where page conditions (e.g. customerId=someId, etc.) are stored in the DB as a comma separated string to be run through a stack expression evaluator, so that customers can add a "confirmation" (aka just a modal dialog) with custom reminder text when a user does a certain thing on a certain page....2

"Just create a new text column on a table and store the IDs comma separated in it for many-to-many relationships!"

font-family expects a comma-separated list. Fonts haven't been displaying on my blog for months because of this issue.
Why could NONE of the browsers I tested this on give me a real syntax error instead of "invalid property value" which could mean literally anything.
Edit: Actually, why can't the CSS plugin for VSCode tell me that I'm making a syntax error in the value of a well-known property?10 -
Dear C++ / Java developers.
Please do not write Python, or do utilize helper libraries / pythonisms.
Not EVERYTHING has to be done by hand, it's not CS class anymore. Classes are fine too, not everything has to be passed as comma separated string. Python is proper Object-Oriented language, not scripting tool like Bash.4 -
Was working as the only frontend developer ona project having 4 "senior" developers. They use Laravel to make an API feeding the angular app.
Why the documentation sucked?
Half the API call params where missing, and not one time did I come across an example stating that the API expects a boolean only to find out 20 minutes later that they mean int 1 or 0 not true or false. Best part however was sending arrays in POST by sending the elements as comma separated values (e1,e2,e3...). Oh and not documentation but while at it a rant... There are other response codes except 200 for fucks sake
