Technology never stops to amaze me.
I bought hdmi stick with nes emulator, connected it to power using usb on my tv directly no power adapter needed - only cable, it has 2 remote pads powered by batteries, all fits into my pocket and it has removable sdcard that I can connect to my computer and upload games.
I can go to someone’s house, bring up this little fella and we can play games together. It only took 40 years to do it.
Damn I remember playing, mario, contra or micro machines as a kid.
Spent 8+ hours playing great old games already lol.
I just need portable 60 inch tv screen or projection screen and battery that would power it for at least 8 hours and fit to my pocket and my life is complete.
Imagine you go to the bar, sit, grab a beer and play mario with random people all night.6 -

I'm hosting dancers for BluesShout! a dance festival in Chicago. Three of the people I'm hosting are developers (two girls, one guy). There are a lot of engineering types that dance. If you haven't done any social dancing, you should really give it a shot. Find a Lindy/Swing, Blues or Contra group and take a class. You might love it. 💃💜3

Should I change my Job?
# Pro current job
- extremly convinient in terms of family compatibility
- low stress
- awesome boss
- I worked on this software for years and can see it gaining maturity
- can not complain about salary
# Contra current job
- always the same boring tech stack, little development as programmer and none beyond that
- I can't see any greater good or social added value in what I do!
- small team and very little opportunities to meat new poeple from other departements or what
- colleagues are okay but conservative and boring, also they do a lot of wfh (take in consideration i am rather extrovert so this is an issue)
- no work trips (see above)18 -
We had a dispute @ work yesterday on this topic :
aproach 1 :
$res = getSomeData( [ 'filter_1' => 'str_1', 'filter_2' => 'str_2', ... 'limit' => 10 );
with
function getSomeData( $data )
{
...
}
VS
aproach 2 :
$res = getSomeData( 'str_1', 'str_2', ... 10 );
with
function getSomeData( $filter_1 = '', $filter_2 = 'default_str', ... $limit = 20 )
{
...
}
I had used 1-st b/c IMHO it's more dynamic and easy to maintain and call ( especially when there are many params, most of which not used on each call )
and my colleague didn't liked it w/h his main arguments that one can not easily see the needed params and no default vals for them ( the latest could be easily corrected in the function body ). I'm curious to read your opinions, arguments & contra arguments for each aproach12 -
#define SOAPBOX
Data will contain errors and inconsistencies, and the only player that can detect them is: the computer itself.
if the computer detects that it is in a situation where it cannot meaningfully continue, it should not allow itself to continue.
Only the computer can make that determination.
If the software does not aggressively test its data, it is usually impossible to determine whether the problem is with the software or with the data or both.
Per contra, if it does do so, it becomes impossible to assert that the input data does not contain the issues that are being tested for ... a very important thing to be able to say in a real-world production setting, where hundred-megabyte input files are common.
#undef SOAPBOX -
I want to learn a new front and back end webdev language. So far, I've found Dart and TypeScript (though this one is not completely new to me) on the front end side, and Go, Elixir and Rust on the back end side. As I don't have too much free time, I can choose one of both sides for now, but I can't decide which ones to go with, since I can read so many pro-contra opinions.
I only need to choose for the skill, I don't have any specific target, I just want to learn new stuff.
Which ones do you suggest? -
This year I and two friends joined modelling competition for uni students called SCUDEM. We are modelling refugee settlements and the crime rate in Uganda. I try to lead the group as the previous year and we changed one team member. The model is written in Julia and it is 2k of working lines after week, we work on it in our spare time.
However, one friend who hasn’t done any bigger project in the past or wasn’t programming for money disagree with the workflow. He prefers doing some small models separately. He doesn’t write clear code and it is difficult to read it afterwards. His ideas are good, but he likes more to talk about the problems than straight code them down in the way that we can use it in the bigger structure.
Do you any ideas on how to motivate him to take part in the collective workflow? I feel that working separately is rather contra-productive.2
