Overheard a phone call of a collegue:
Person on phone (P): okay so how do I upload the code?
Colleague (C): well you could use filezilla for example
P: oh... okay... yeah.... So how does that work?
C: you said earlier that you were going to hire a more technical person, a developer, to develop this wordpress side, maybe he/she could help you out with this?
P: I am that developer.
C: 😶😐10 -
I have a friend that does 3D Modeling and asked my permission to use my room where i work for a scene on his next project. I said sure and he gave me this. I like it 👌11

In networking class today:
Student - "But this is just in theory, how does it work in practice?"
Lecturer - "In theory, theory and practice are the same thing."15 -
Recruiter: This is a 100% remote position
Dev: Good! That’s what I’m looking for.
Recruiter: But the company does require you to come into the office “on occasion”
Dev: I live 5 hours away from your office so that would be not a good fit
Recruiter: And once covid is over the ability to work remotely will be getting reconsidered. You’ll likely need to move cities in order to continue your employment with them.
Dev: Yeah I’m looking for 100% remote work
Recruit: This is 100% remote! Just with the need to come into the office sometimes now and potentially more later.
Dev: …15 -

Every time I code, my programmer boyfriend has to be near me. Why, you may ask? Because this happens too often:
me: *yells bf name*, why does this not work?????
bf: here, lemme see
*code mysteriously works when bf comes to see*
bf: what, theres nothing wrong with that

This is just my token of appreciation for the Skype devs. Can't begin to say how much I hate it. Your android app is a joke even after a host of updates, your desktop client is an even bigger joke (atleast Linux Beta version, I know betas aren't supposed to be stable but this is ridiculous).
You have reinvented chat clients to be extremely bulky, cumbersome and very hard to sync across devices. And you have managed to make it "buffer" more than a YouTube video does on a 2G network. I for one, am blown over by how you did that. And to top it all, you can't close the client on Linux atleast! All you did is just override the close button so that it only minimises it. Brilliant piece of work right there!
Why the hell can't you just close the client and run it in the background the proper way like everyone else does? Why does it have to take 20 *** seconds to open a message? The only reason I am stuck with this is some wierdos in the office still only use this. Get your shit together 😡
Ahh.. I feel much better now.18 -
drunk me: "let's just code a bit right before going to bed!"

sober me: "when and what did i do here?"

also sober me: "how the hell does this work?!"9 -
This one colleague at my work.
I'm pretty new to a lot stuff and I stress out about some stuff a lot more than the other guys, mostly because I'm scared I might not be able to fix it.
But whenever that happens, I explain this guy what's going on and then, while making jokes, talking in a very calming way, he always knows to fix it in no time!
For everyone who does this, thanks for being there for the little/new guys :)1 -
So this morning my girlfriend just woke up and pressed the hue "lights off" button over and over again and yelled: "The fuckin light switch does not work". Then she realized, that the light comes from the sun.1

$sis: hey $me, can you help me?
$me: Uhm, sure, what's wrong?
$sis. The printer doesn't work..
$me: what does it say?
$sis: what do you mean?
$me: like, when you try to print something, what does it say?
$sis: uhm... idk...where should it say something
$me: On your screen you should be getting an error message right?
$sis (now getting irritated for some reason): no it doesn't..
$me: okay, let me check it out
*I walk to the printer with my sister's laptop and plug in the usb*
*Select printer > click print*
"Printer offline"
$me: was it also saying this before
$sis: uhm...yes
$me: ok
At this point im already getting a bit fed up
$me: are you sure this port is working
$sis: yes, I am sure
Okay, check other ports just to be sure, also don't work.
After about 15 minutes of debugging, turns out she managed to unplug the cable on the printer...
And all I got was a "o thanks"

When you receive a new task to disable a feature that hasn’t been used for months and deploy the changes to production, the last thing you expect is:
> deployment successful
> 5 seconds pass

>
> you got mail
> why does this no work anymore
Are you fucking kidding me!1 -
TL;DR they blocked github
I work remotely, that means every once in a while I take my laptop and travel somewhere, work and have fun. This week I am visiting Turkey, they just blocked github 2 days ago... Freaking github... who does that?! and why?!7 -
All my unit tests work, all my component tests work, why the FUCK does it give me a 'Verification Failed' error?
1 hour later:

GUI user: "How can you work from such a basic text interface like that terminal?"
Me: "How can you work with all those stupid buttons that more often than not can't do jack shit?"
Being a Powerline user, I do think that design matters a lot. But so does usability (I don't want my programs to take half a minute to load their bloated UI's) and the ability to use every feature that this or that piece of software has in its command line arguments but not necessarily as a GUI option.9 -
*Doing a Peer Code Review of someone senior to me*
Me: This fix doesn't look like it will work, but maybe I don't understand. How does this fix the defect?
Senior Dev: *Blinks* It works on my machine
Me: But how does it work?
Senior Dev: It works when I run it on my machine...
Me: Do you know if this will fix the issue?
*Silence*
Never seen QA punt an issue back to development so fast.7 -
Me: Listen dude, the code worked perfectly and all the test cases passed so I'm done here.
Also me: What is this? What the fuck is this? Why does this work? What witchcraft is this?
*Screams internally*1 -
I see this is true.
I am learning software development I understand what the code does but the most difficult part is to think and think and think what code to implement and how you're going to code it to make the program work.6 -
My boss, delusional as always and getting worse every week, conveys the news that eight interns have been taken on. Without asking us seniors if that would be a good idea.
Us: ”who should, you know, actually help these good people out?”
Boss: ”we will have to work that out”
Us: ”we don’t have the time actually to do this without seriously pushing deadlines forward”
Boss: ”we will have to work something out so that this does not happen”
Us: ”soo, we don’t have to actually help these guys and girls once they are here?”
Boss: ”no, they obviously need a lot of help. What we do here are really complex”
Us: 😬8 -
Does anyone else have this? I always try to adjust the way I say things to non-hostile/aggressive (talking about things I have very specific opinions on) because I'm somehow afraid of starting a heated argument. On here, at work, everywhere.
Going to try to just speak my mind, even if that would get me into more fights etc 😅11 -
1825. Leaving work. Today sucks. My coworker is out and she normally does this weekly report. I need her. I don't like this.26

- If I buy x amount of ram | hard drive space | cpu power I will never need more.
- No need for version control | Tests. This is a small project
- git commit -m "changes" (its a small change. I will remember why I did it)
- It is too obvious that I put a lot of personal time in this so my boss will definitely notice!
- Why comment this simple method? Anyone should know what it does. Especially me!
- "this should never happen"
- This call can't be from work. Everyone knows I am on vacation.
- I will back up next week. It's not like it is going to crush today.
- It’s 11:30 already? I will work on this for only a half hour more and then I will definitely go to bed!
- This project will take x amount of time!2 -
Me: "What a stupid piece of shit documentation and software, it does not work!!!!!!!"

Client : hey why does your app minimize once I receive a call? Fix this ASAP! Also why does it show *that*? I have not turned anything on!
Me : Sorry, not possible (explains), you might want to contact Google (for the lolz). Also, the feature is shown by default, you can turn it off via Menu - Settings - Navigation - xxx.
Client : Can you make the incoming call popup smaller when using your app?
Me : Unfortunately no, that's not something I can do. Contact LG.
Client : I have been to Menu - Settings - Map - XXX and the feature is still shown, why does your software not work? Also *this and that* is not shown anymore!
Me : You turned off the wrong thing... *jumps out of the window* *contemplates life* *cries* *dies*1 -
when your first try to learn a new programming language, for example c++ and you are still new to coding:
"Wtf does it behave this way. How dafuq do pointers work...argh"
and then years later, you come back to c++, do a little revision and it all starts to fall into place and make sense. Man. That feeling.3 -

WHAT THE FUCK? IS THIS REAL?
I got a call from a managment institute asking me if I have any MBA plans after graduation.
I said no and asked the person where did he get my number.
He said: Google

Supervisor: so you're going to write a perl script that will compile a jar that will be used to invoke a web service
Me: okay. What does the web service do?...
Supervisor: I'm not sure how it works. It'll just return a success or error code
Me: so I'm just going to invoke a black box?
Supervisor: that's a good way to think of it
Me: so how does the qa process work with this black box/how can we debug?
Supervisor: we don't have qa for it and we can't debug
What the fuck?!?!? You expect me to call a literal fucking black fucking box?!?! This isn't lambda calc you jabroni.2 -

there's this thing I've noticed...
º the more interesting DEV task I'm working on, the more I forget to eat (sometimes at all @9-5)
º the more boring/repelling DEV task I'm working on, the more snack breaks I take
Am I alone here?
Does that mean exciting DEV (only?) work is more likely to keep you fit and boring tasks are dragging you to obesity?2 -
Who else does this?
>Work on a website for weeks without taking a break.
>Really enjoy the outcome, take a deserved 2 days off.
>Come back to your code, suddenly you don't know where to start, you feel disgusted by your code and you totally change your idea on how your website should look in the first place.
>Delete it, start from scratch.6 -
Me: Boss, i am not qualified for this. This is something totally different that what i do.
Boss: Just do what you can.
* Me does something which seems to work*
-- A few months or even years later:
Boss: Our distributed systems don't longer work. What happened?
Me, after checking different system: Oh, there is a key that expired. I didn't know this key had an expire date. So they can no longer connect.
Turns out we have to visit every remote system (driving distance of a few 100's km) and set a new key. We couldn't do it remotely since we lost access.
Maybe, just maybe, when your employee says he isn't qualified for a task, listen and search someone that know what he is doing.2 -
Every time I see this picture here on devRant I think of my annoying ass for a co-worker.
Not only does he refuse to listen to me and whines all the time, but when I show him a solution he copies my work right to the last semicolon. And proclaims himself to be God for "coming up with the solution".

Friend : I will do this when I get back from work.
Me : But you are working from home, aren't you?
Friend : Yes, but I am at work, right now.
Me: And how does your route back home look like?
Friend : I switch input source from my work's laptop to gaming rig.6 -
I should not have looked at this really interesting Chrome extension.
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/...
It tries to prevent phishing links from working by adding attributes to change the behaviour of the browser.
HOW DOES THIS WORK?
Just one simple line:
$('[target="_blank"]').attr("rel", "noopener noreferrer");
But why is this extension so bloated?
It loads the full jQuery library. For an attribute change!

Guys, does anyone promise himself to work on a personal project on the weekend which he really is excited about working on. Then he ends up having done nothing but play a game or go out?

My company just got a new developer to work on a legacy PHP app.
My boss was boasting about how this guy has more years of professional experience than me ( I have 9 months of experience and he has been working for 4 years on PHP).
Today was one week since he started and I had him set up a REST API, I had to explain to him what json_encode does and how http requests work.6 -

Tip: Find the email of a github user.
Github user page > choose a repository > view code > click commits > click on a commit > add .patch at the end of the url.
This shows email adres of github user who did the commit.
Note: does not work with forked repo’s.

I recently joined a new company where work is quite different than my previous company.
Every day at work is challenging for me. There is good exposure to learn technology in depth. But time constraint to deliver module like under 3 days does not let me learn my work, also I am not satisfy with the quality of my code that I provide, it more looks like a patch. In my previous company I was favorite developer of my team but here I feel like a fresher who doesn't know from where to start.
Even I feel like my presence does not make any impact in office as I am just like an extra player of the team. I am slow at my work because I learn then I code due to which my manager does not consider me for any new work. I feel like left out in my team.
Once I overheard one of my colleague he called me helpless and were making fun of me. With every passing day I am losing my confidence.
I have no github reputation. It's like I am jack of all trades but master of none.
Every day is like big fight day in office.
I know our only way to survive in this industry is to keep on learning but in smart way. I am not sure what's that smart way?
Any advice would be helpful.4 -
Does this happen to someone else? She actively seeks that spot. I love her and I love to spend time with her and share the space, but I have to work, dear...6

When I got to learn about json yesterday I hate it cause I need to do extra work to MVC project. But after today the instructor told us what it does, and I love it. Gonna start learning this stuff more tomorrow1

One of my coworkers just had a baby, so he left work today and won't be back for a month or more.
We (accidentally) took the client's website down for 3 hours, messed up our git repo and when we finally fixed both things, I had to spend the rest of the day editing fucking vector graphics (which I had never done before and completely suck at).
I never realized how much work this guy does or how important he is until now.14 -
😸:oh hi, i came in early to checkout this game, but i was just about to get off and start work.

👺:I am your boss, and as long as you get the work done, on time, and done well, I don't care if it looks lie you are doing nothing but being paid to play games. If anyone does bother you about playing games at work let me and I will let them know to leave you alone.3 -
Online applications are so much worse than the classic snail mail ones, because some companies just don't seem to give a single fuck about the quality of their application application (hehe).
This results in such joyous things like:
• "Allowed file types: doc, docx, pdf, jpg, zip"
• "Max filesize 3mb"
• "One of your files does not meet the requirements" (doesn't tell you which)
• "Upload timed out, please try again"
• 403 forbidden
• "Your account does not have the necessary permissions to upload more than 4 files at once"
• clicking the submit button leads to a 404
• "Please explain why you want to work for us." 500 character limit
• Google forms2 -

I starting to think, that I may actually be addicted to learning 😅 sound completely stupid, but I'm kinda stressed lately, so I wanted to take a day off, and not do anything.

COBOL is something I use at work. Typically, you see IF blocks like this
IF condition
Stuff
END-IF.
But the END-IF part if actually optional. You can just use a period and it does the same thing.
IF condition
Stuff.

Building a wheel is great.
Building a steering wheel is also great
Building a brakes pedal is amazing.
Making them work asynchronously - not that good of an idea is it...
Who the fuck thought separating data stream (copying bytes) from stream control (when does the stream start/end) is a good idea...?
- open a connection
- send data to the stream
- send() returns
- close the connection
Apparently, the send() does not copy the data and returns. Instead, it enqueues the data copying task end returns. When does the actual copying start? IDK. When does it end? IDK. Can I close the conn? NO!
This thing is UNUSABLE. And I'd riddle it with reflection-based workarounds if it weren't for the static methods.
Fuck!3 -
One shitty thing about working in a Japanese company is that they make you write personal goals/targets (目標). These goals they expect you to achieve don't actually relate to your work most of the time and it's not about personal growth, but more about what you did to improve the company.
Another thing is their expectations that you can achieve all this within a year on top of your work is kind of unrealistic. Plus even if you achieve such goals, it does not equate to good performance review and/or salary increases.8 -

SOM: Actually let's have a meeting instead and all discuss this.

Y U NOT WORKING RIGHT?
How do you guys make really complex websites when I can even center an unordered list without the first child...
I write something like align-vertically: center;
And what does it do? NOTHING!
And if it does something, it mirrors the whole page, makes it all bright pink and then everything explodes and I'm alone in a dark void, only me and my PC are there and somehow I have access to the internet.
And then I look it up at stackoverflow and I'm like: Oh, ok, I'll do it this way then.
And it still doesn't work and does absolutly nothing!
So I'm trapped in this void of nothingness till the end of my days.
At least that's what it feels like.9 -

Today I had what might have been my worst job interview to date. It had many different technical, cultural, and business red flags. One that really stuck out to me was when I asked my interviewer why he loves his job, he went on about how great the benefits and events are. Not a single word about the work he does or his teammates. A younger me would have seen this as an opportunity to put in some hard work and contribute to something great. Older me knows to avoid this dumpster fire like the goddamn plague.6

Why does it have to be Men Vs Women, why does there have to be any comparison at all, except the question that how does this individual compare to the rest.
I really don't care whether one is old, young, male or female or whatever other factor that can be used to separate humans into groups. Why can't it simply be: Does this individual produce the end result required? Period.6 -

So that's where the W3C ivory tower clique ended up this year, as rubberstamping secretary for the WHATWG: https://w3.org/blog/2019/...
Well at least, the W3C got the grounding they clearly were lacking over many years!
Recap: the W3C went totally out of touch with reality and wanted an HTML incompatible successor that neither browser vendors nor web authors were interested in. They wasted years on XHTML and drafted specs into the void.
15 years ago, Mozilla and Opera said "fuck this shit" and founded the WHATWG which would work on HTML5. Apple and Google joined in later.
And now the W3C does ground-breaking work like providing the recommendation texts in different formatting, LOL!10 -
Does anyone else feel you have to do the coding part of development outside of office hours, because the interruptions + even anxiety of being interrupted prevents you from getting into the zone? If I have free time at the weekend I can get into work coding and it's great - I'm so productive - isn't this how work would want me to be 5 days a week? And yet, somehow, the work environment doesn't allow it.7

Boss: Why are you trying to build the old program?
Me: Because I need to determine behavior of why old program works with data that new program does not.
Boss: Does it affect the output?
Me: No, but...
Boss: STOP! Just filter it.
Me: Okay.
Boss: Go write new fun code, not work on old shit.
Me: Thank you for saving me from myself.

I just saw this job opening for visual artists (not me at all, but still curious what kind of person they are looking for).
https://artstation.com/jobs/J1OY/
It's so detailed, a person applying would immediately know what is expected of them and what their role will be. Why isnt this like this for most programming jobs?
Example of programming job opening descriptions:
Knowledge of a backend language (ex: python, java, C++)
Experience with databases
Experience with making and using APIs
This does not in any way describe what I will do at all. (yes this is a copy of most useful information of a job offer I recently got). It does not state which language to work with (I know none of the listed ones, but I do know PHP, C# and javascript/typescript (yes I know) for backend languages.
What kind of database experience? I have worked as supermarket employee and when I had to order new things I had to use a application to update the database. (Ive done more, but who does not have experience with any kind of database in any way)
TL;DR The artist job opening description is so well described. Why isnt it that way for programmers more often -
Holy crap, I can't take it anymore.
I know that user acceptance testing is supposed to be done by the end user but it's as if they entirely skipped UNIT TESTING and QUALITY ENGINEERING.
Does their API work? Yes. It does.
Are their endpoints working? Sort of... why are query parameters required again?
Is it good overall? No, there are CORNER CASES ALL OVER THE PLACE (are they even still corner cases at this point?). It feels like it was made by amateurs!
Why am I doing quality testing on their services??? holy crap, they should pay ME for doing this1 -
I do not usually shit on operating systems or participate on hate discussions about tech and what not.
But boy, Windows 11 does fucking suck and it is giving me Vista vibes regarding how much I fucking hate it. And no, unfortunately I cannot change this PC to Linux (as I have before with other work computers) since I need Windows for it.25 -
If linux is used and maintained by professional power users mostly, why on earth does it never gets good support for basic things Windows does?
Screen dims while playing video, configuring lock screen to work with DM sucks as hell, you even have to define most keyboard shortcuts manually, Optimus GPU setup always buggy, you have to spend some time just configuring power management to work just fine.
We really need to fix this. I mean I am a Linux addict but time is money too.8 -
<rant>So I'm new to the having-meetings-every-waking-moment-of-the-day thing... Just wondering if anyone is supposed to get anything done??
Or are we supposed to gather more and more work to do during each meeting?
The only times I've been able to do work is when I can mute the mic or say I'm in a "lunch meeting"!!
Does this happen to everybody???

This just came up in GitHub.
I guess my browser isn’t up to date??
And a second thing. Why does it even say that? GitHub seems to work perfectly fine.6 -
Come into work, 5 of our 18 employees have been fired. The boss stares at you with a gleam in his eye. This makes me want to program incredibly technical shizzle. Of course it does. There's nothing like a supportive work life balance :/6

Just found out today that may FINALLY be able to start charging for the development work our team does. 😎
Just have to wonder why this could have happened ages ago.
**Spoilers**
It was the sales team. That's why! -
I'm absolutely amazed this business keeps going. I've been fighting with an upgrade process (for a product I don't usually work on) for two full days now and every. single. thing. has a million specific workarounds. HOW DOES THIS EVEN GO?1

tell my boss on Friday that I'll work through the weekend to get done work done on some python code.
he doesn't give out vpn access so I can't use our company git so I put the project on a flash drive to work on.
come into work and I have an email. on Sunday he did everything I said I was doing (and had done) and then refactors the entire repo so even if he hadn't done the work, all of what I did became useless.
His way is the only way. but good luck getting him to tell you how he wants it. you just have to do a bunch of work only for him to tell you he doesn't like the way you did things and then he does it himself.
makes me realize why their other programmers didn't stick around. because they had to work so closely with this guy.
glad I started looking for other jobs sooner then later.1 -

sales-managers: How long do you need to implement feature X ?
software-dev: Hmmm, that's nothing we have in our default-packages ... could be nasty, because it won't work without feature Y, which also does not exist in the current version 3 of our system.
I need to investigate this issue.
... 2 days later:
software-dev: This is really a nasty problem - to make X work, we've to reimplement Y for our system version 3, but this won't work with feature Z.
If we do this, it may take several weeks.
sales-manager: we need to go live in 2 months.
software-dev: might work.
------
1 week before go-live:
sales-manager: The customer saw us testing feature X. He does not like it. Could we just do it in ... blabla ... this way?
software-dev: This would work out of the box with feature Z, yes - we've to remove feature Y and X for that. But be warned - this might work next week without testing only.
sales-mamanger: do it now!
day of go live:
The customer tried the new feature X - it won't work.
software-dev: But it's not there, was removed, instead he has to use feature Z.
...
sales-guy comes back: He does not like it.
software-dev: why not? its working!
sales-guy: Yes, but he still wants it to work like feature X as he ordered.
software-dev: according to the specs, its exactly what he ordered. look at that: (showing the general specifications of project, showing feature Z).
...
sales-guy: The customer did not review this new document since last week.... Its still feature X
...
dev: really? why? I sent that version to you the day, he said, he doesn't like feature X, and you said I've to change that just urgently.
sales-guy: Please switch back to the version with X of last week. - could you. please ?
me: This won't work, because the other colleagues already finished their stuff on that currently running system - we'll lose all the optimations we've done to make this and other stuff work.
----- FAIL ------- NEVER DO ANYTHING WITHOUT SIGNATURE OF THE CUSTOMER !!!
One week onsite and rescheduled go-live is just so-what expensive.
Today (some weeks later) ... I saw someone else sitting in sales-guys office.1 -

Why does Linux Bluetooth audio not work properly!!!!
I have been using Linux on my laptop (moving from macOS). I got so used to Linux, and I love it so much at this point, but I really wanna use my Bluetooth speakers (subwoofer ❤️❤️).

The only type of client I like being, is a hostile one.
That's why I intend to answer every question of the dev team, with a question.
"So would you like this banner to be blue, or green?"
Does green evoke the same emotions as blue?
"Probably not, but we're asking you so we know how to finish the design..."
Does a design have a will of its own?
"Ok... What do you think about the new e-mail feature?"
Does anyone use e-mail nowadays?

Are you a professional?
"I don't think this collaboration is going to work out"

Business Continuity / DR 101...
How could GitLab go down? A deleted directory? What!
A tired sysadmin should not be able to cause this much damage.
Did they have a TESTED dr plan? An untested plan is no plan. An untested plan does not count. An untested plan is an invitation to what occurred.
That the backups did not work does not cut it - sorry GitLab. Thorough testing is required before a disruptive event.
Did they do a thorough risk assessment?
We call this a 'lesson learned' in my BC/DR profession. Everyone please learn by it.
I hope GitLab is ok.2 -
My GOTOs are:
- Check if focus on teamwork is emphasized. Does the company state themselves? Spend a day with the team if possible, see how they work together.
- What tools do they use? Sometimes this will hint you towards whether or not you will encounter a good environment or a jumbled mess.
- Is there organized communication? I know, sometimes there are too many meetings, but that is better than too vew. How often does the team meet, even if just for 10mins? How does management communicate with the team? What ways are provided to give feedback? Are suggestions to improve practices welcome?
I left my last company and joined my current one, where these things work out the way they should. While I liked both projects with respect to development, my mental state has improved dramatically in the new environment. Stress is down, productivity is up. I love my job. -
"Hey, this developer does some good work, I think I'll follow them to keep up... Oh, their online presence is consumed in identity politics? Damn."1

So ya its almost mid April, deadline is end of April and 20% of APIs are not yet ready and mobile app has barely 50% of pages done.
This is going to be a fun project to work on, I was asked to join the team couple of weeks ago
What is even more funny I still have no clue what this project does, I'm just creating UI based on what the designer (that started a month ago) delivered just a week ago -- Three weeks before final deadline -
My team now does daily mini-standups: what you did, what you will do, what's blocking u
But with this wfh, I feel like slacking more or just seen to have less critical work to do... but not sure if the other guys are just "padding their list" or actually really busy.
So wondering when I have nothing to do for work/no defined deadlines or deliverables... How do you look busy?
I do have a lot of optional tech debt improvement work I could do but basically these are like backlog... And not really fun.6 -
Am I the only one that goes crazy when I have to use a low-code system? It makes no sense to me. The abstractions that help an average schmuck make a feedback loop of abstractions in my brain.
How do I loop over this collection. Is this a collection or a single thing? How does a variable work? Logic doesn't work the same? How do I know what is actually coming into this little port? When does the database get this? Can I see a debug log somewhere? Why can't I see the code behind this little popup window?
I ask someone that isn't a developer and they say, "You are overthinking it."
Fuck that. You pay me to overthink things and describe them in excruciating detail. You wouldn't hand an illustrator three wax crayons and ask them to make a photo-realistic picture.7 -
Maybe people have not been around a long time here. But this JS bashing has been going on for half a decade. I honestly don't care about the merits of the language. It does what I need it to for my work. If I need more performance I drop to the C++ anyway. I like a lot of the functionality especially for arrays/lists. I love the ... operator for dynamic lists. It is very useful in the my GUI work. As a scripting language it is pretty nice.
But know this, the bashings will continue until morale improves...12 -

Why is it so hard to remember, that devs need an error message if they should help you. just saying "it does not work" is not helping.
I even wrote you a checklist. so f*ing use it! I'm not there to be called every time just to tell you to do something that's already on this list.
Every. F**ing. Time.2 -
Teammate has been slacking since a week: not joining standups, not joining calls, stuff like that. Upon asking , he does give info which is needed from him, over slack. He is a pretty good engineer and has won a company award this year.
Today manager scolded him pretty harshly. No direct slangs, but very rude tone and sentences like ‘do you need special invitation to your house to join this meeting?’ , ‘If you don’t want to work, just fuck all this shit’ and things along this line for 10 mins. Basically manager lost his shit completely.
I didn’t like the way he was treated. What options does my teammate have ? We’re based out of Hyderabad, India.6 -
Does anyone else here have coding-fatigue?
Like if someone gives me a problem (BIG or small), I can chalk out an architecture or "oh you can use this-n-this-n-this"
But if you ask me to code it, though it's easy as fuck, I dont want to and will drag it until I gush 2 coffees to force myself to do it.
You give me a junior dev who knows NOTHING and does the typing and I can guide him and make him do it all, but by myself? nah
PS: this only applies to work-code that isnt "fun" per-se. My own projects? no issues at all12 -
With the invention of pip every project done with python just fucken angers me. Like mostly nothing fucken works if there is a single .py file in there. You can put your easy-install.sh up your ass if it just ~tries~ to install shit via pip before because IT WONT WORK FUCK THIS SHIT!
STOP USING PYTHON FOR PROJECTS YOU RELEASE PLS CUS SHITS UNREADABLE AND WONT WORK ON MY MACHINE. MAKE ROOM FOR PROJECTS MANAGED BY NPM OR SHIT LIKE THAT WHERE `npm install` ACTUALLY DOES IT'S JOB THANKS I'M ANGRY AF.

I know we do asynchronous communication where I work, but boy does my blood SUBLIMATE when people take half a fucking day or MORE to answer a question without the answer to which I cannot progress at my work
And they're like "sorry, I was out for a little while"
If only the fucking tasks were actually refined and discussed on planning, if only people wouldn't shut me down for "trying to discuss technical details" during it, maybe this wouldn't fucking happen and I wouldn't be feeling so fucking stressed out with work pending for the weekend
Jesus fucking Christ, I need to change jobs, this company pays me peanuts anyway4 -
How do you feel with not having motivation to work on/finish your personal projects?
I'm working 9 to 5 plus commute and at the end of the day I just want to eat some food and chill. But I keep beating myself up over not working on things that will improve myself.
Does anyone else feel like this while working full time?3 -
Does anyone else question their career in programming from time to time?
I've been around this line of work for almost 7 years now and I still get these doubts once or twice a year.
Be it unreasonable deadlines, horrible people that I'm forced to work with or just outright incompetence.
My latest occurence of doubt was when getting assigned a task that initially didn't seem like a big deal, but it turned out to be months and months of custom work instead of going along with the standard components and design guidelines.
This was somehow missed in the estimate phase and once I got assigned to it a hard deadline was already set, to top it off the features was non-negotiable.
These kind of things really makes me feel helpless and really depressed. My work is all I have, and I don't really know what I would do if I'd change career path today.3 -
So here I'm, going for an interview but I'm not allowed to show my previous work, since it might give compatitive edge to the organisation interviewing me. But still it does not matter if my supervisor boasts about the work in public forums like conferences.....what kind of secrecy is this :'(3

So, whenever I delay windows 10 update restart a few times, things start breaking. Wifi doesn't work, 100% cpu, ram or mem usage, sound problems etc. And all this goes away once I submit my soul and update. I'm sick of this shit 😡. Today I got a BSOD after which it updated and things seem fine FOR NOW.
Does this happen to other Win 10 users?8 -
I am currently working as a consultant and I like it. It also makes upset/happy/schadenfroh (not entirely sure how I feel about it) when we tell the client what work needs to be done in which order and why just so they can throw it all overboard and we do it the way they want it and it bites them in the ass a few month down the line.
They hire us for the external professional experience that we bring, so listen to us. We did this before, we know what works, and we know way your way does not work.13 -
This is incredibly interesting. How the frikkin-frik did the WiFi and Bluetooth die on my Raspberry Pi 3. Yes, I realize they work in tandem but how does something like this just die after just sitting around and performing light duty tasks for just a few months.
Reinstalled Rasbpain 2 times, nothing. USB WiFi dingle works great.
Not really a rant but I wonder how shit like this happens.
The Pi is in a case away from my cats, in a temperature controlled environment and adorned with the official power adapter.
Things that make you go hmmmmmmm. -
@allBeginners:
It's not about which language to pick or which problem to solve. It starts with thinking like a programmer.
I think that this guy educates quite well: https://youtu.be/azcrPFhaY9k
TLDW: Write your problem in English first and then translate that into simple code, not the other way around. If it does not work, you told the wrong things to the computer; its not the computer failing.4 -
When I was 8, I was just casually using the computer I had, and then I suddenly started asking these questions in my head, “how does all of this work? How does the computer know when I press that key on the keyboard? How does it know I moved the mouse to the right?” And so on and so on. So I started searching for answers. Then I saw code examples and stuff and I told myself that I want to understand this and just started learning. Hooked ever since!!

I read this rant on Quora. Is this true ?
“The IT industry has devolved into a gigantic ponzi scam built on exploitation and BS. Quality of solution and quality of work was replaced with a ‘Does it work now?’ approach with zero contingency.
And the fact that geeks and nerds are naive only helps the white collar crooks to exploit them as code monkeys.”9 -

Need opinions on testing as a career:
- is it good?
- Do you find your work interesting?
- Is it rewarding(in terms of salary/timings/other stuff)?
- Does it has a good career growth?
- How hard is the work for a fresher in this?
- How much mentor support does a fresher gets in this?
- How much salaries are there in this?
- how true do you find the believe that software testing will get automated and jobs in this area will get reduced in future?

Fun fact. I work for a 20-year old company that does software which mostly does print outputs. 95% of our clients actually use it specifically and exclusively to print their invoice runs. There are over 25 printers in this office, 5 of which are within chair-rolling distance of my desk.
I don't know how to use or fix any of them. I must be a *really bad* developer. >.<3 -
A brain whenever someone is working on a project:
Does the person I control have motivation? If so, I remember the person of another task so he/she/helicopter can't work on it.
Does the person I control have time?
If so, I set the person's motivation level to zero.
After this extremely accurate research I think we are better of by removing our brain.
BTW, I publish this research here under the MIT license.3 -
Is part of being intermediate/fluent in a tool, language or framework that you've just unwillingly memorized all the error messages you've come across?
'Hey I got error X' -> Just change Z and C and it will work
'Do you know what this stacktrace is trying to tell me?' -> Yeah you forgot a space
'What does this mean?' -> Just add the host to the hostfile
Not that it immediately makes you an expert ofcourse2 -
Manager does nothing but give me more work. Can't code. doesn't even get git issues. Last in first out yet I'm first in last out. At end of meeting he says, "great job but one comment, you should say 'We' not 'I', cuz this is a team effort"
Are you fucking kidding me dude? Add it as another issue.... Oh wait -
It's Friday, I just want to go home and work on my side project.
At the end of the day some co-workers ask me to join for a beer. It's too hard to resist, it's just one beer. Just one beer? Who am I lying to? Its probably going to end the same way as last friday and the friday before that.
This is why I don't have time to work on my side projects.
I don't look forward to the headache tomorrow.
It's too hard to say no.
Does anyone of you feel the same way?4 -
I *hate* it when a senior asks me to write a functional test report. Like I thought we hired functional testers to do that sort of stuff? I'm a programmer, I only write 3 things: code, documentation, and more code. Not freaking reports about how something did not work before, and after this 1-line fix does work. Oh and don't forget to include screenshots and a description of the issue. Arghhh4

Does anyone else feel bored of sleeping ?
Purposely closing my eyes and dozing off to sleep is something I cannot do... It's just boring.
I tire myself out until my weakness kicks in to give me a couple hours of sleep. This has been affecting my health, concentration and ultimately work and I don't know how to tackle this problem.
Trying to sleep is easier said than done, staring into a blank empty space is a huge anxiety trigger for me on top of being a less exciting thing to do.23 -
!rant I need a TL:DR for custom ROMS, I already know what they are, what they do, I need to know how useful they are and where I can start!
Thanks!8 -
This story was related to me while I was in university.
So a long time ago, (in a galaxy far far away). This student was working as an intern at some tech company. He was running some queries, everything was fine. He decides that's good enough and heads for lunch.
When he comes back the query does not work. He notices the others around him start to stand up asking if anyone has a connection.
Turns out that an intern, at another building, basically deleted everything. I'm guessing they did not add this internship to their resume. -
Reminded again why every professional developer should at least read and understand basic algorithms...
Colleague: I don't understand why this agregation query is so slow, the counting is on the DB.
This function used to work fine... Now it sometimes hangs.
Me thinking: why does everyone assume db has unlimited resources and computing power so everything should be quick (no time or space complexity)...
Maybe if everyone understood this stuff our code base wouldn't be so shitty from the start...8 -
I suggested we make a feature that has a checkbox that is greyed out and always selected. It would have words describing what the checkbox does. This would inform the user about how the feature works, but won't allow them to change that behavior.
So I am ready and willing to create user hostile software features. I am ready to work for Microsoft.1 -
I think I used to identify myself heavily by my work, career and so felt very dissatisfied I wasn't living up to my potential and getting the chances I deserved. I just couldn't get my dream job...
But now it feels like I've sorta split into Work and Life. Work does whatever is needed to pay the bills and is pretty satisfied now. Still gotta deal with monkeys but maybe devRant has helped provide an outlet to unleash the stress... and maybe sorta made it fun...
But Life juggles among different things, some time wasters, but seems now not so coding heavy anymore unless it's really inspired. And doesn't like putting aside time to prepare for interviews anymore or even actively seek out the latest tech news...
I sorta forgot what I was saying but does anyone else feel they used to have one identity but now split into 2 or more?
Actually I think this is what triggered it. Read this awhile ago but suddenly had this thought in my mind...

The whole thing is a giant hack parsing dates to and from strings, switching locales, setting months and days and using the month as a daypicker as this fucking component does not allow me display day names in it, only month names. Such a mess... at least now I can work on the stuff that matters.
Actually though about making this open source... I reconsidered.8 -
Working on something...
-Hun?! Why the hell doesn't it work?
Attempt a few fixes...
-Still doesn't work? Damn what am i doing wrong?
Attempt other changes...
-Why is it still not working!?
Debug step by step, validate my values are fine...
-Why does my output not correspond to my values!?! What the hell is this black magic!?
Rebuild the same solution for the 5th time...
-...Why does it work now... -

How is C and C++ development done in reallife ffs?
Like, you got no ecosystem whatsoever, just thousands of build chains. How does this work?25 -
I could use some advice. Immagine this: you recently started a new job where the people are great, the product is pretty cool and pay is good. But the code you have to work with is the biggest pile of shite you've ever seen and your manager does not want to change any of this, even after you suggest you would build something that would be a thousand times better, not only "code wise" but for the users too. What would you do?9

Changed db host from sles 11 to sles 12...
Users had to set a new pw...
And there is this guy, who is longer in this business, than i am on this world...
Yet i had to show him passwd...
And now he gets back to me with the following:
C: "since the pw reset my password doesn't work"
> Cutout from the error message, which clearly says ssh algorithm negotiation failed
Me: "just to be sure, are your pws set correctly? And what client do you have, where does this message come from?"
C:"i checked the pws, they match. I still get the error."
...
Me: "... And whats your client? Does putty/cygwin still work"
C:"yeah they still work"
...
Me:"and what throws this error?"
C:"uhm Ant"
*Fyi: some version as old as the brown coals used to do some shady db2 and java stuff"
*Me doin a quick googleing for the error and Ant"
Me:"yup... It appears, that the java lib has some problems with the ssh algorithms.. here are some stackoverflow links, which described your problem." *at least make me try, please*
*Waiting for his response, which will surely result in pure enlightenment and bliss for me...*
Seriously... How dares java to fuck this up... -
How often does this happen to you?
Hmm I need to install the nodemon package, ok so I enter:
npm install -g nodemon
Result:
npm WARN
npm WARN
npm ERR
npm ERR
npm ERR....
I then wonder why would it not work??? Then after looking at the errors I realise ohh:
sudo npm install -g nodemon
This literally happens to me almost every single time I install a package.8 -

I remember when first iPhone came out, The only broken shit while browsing was panning and pinching(most of the pages did not have responsive design) but they worked. Now every fucking webpage is mobile friendly, except all of them are fucking broken! You don't have safari or Chrome? Then fuck you! Here you have this BIG fucking button that does not work. So I was compiling Resurrection Remix, Android 10. And I'm making some commits here and there, and my friend looks over and asks me "so how does this work?" And I briefly explain about device tree, vendor and kernel. So he says "oh okay, so basically it's like copy and paste?"
I've never been so offended in my life 😐rant kernel developer roms offensive android vendors pissed off kernel development mad angry dev angry3 -
Joined a new company and the first few weeks were a complete bore (didn't have access to anything). Ended up wasting time instead of using it elsewhere. Now that I am swamped with work I've the sudden spark to learn every skill I thought I should pick up. Does this happen to anyone else? Motivation comes only on busy days.1

I don't know if my boss just wants me to learn how to use a new internal deployment process or just likes giving me unnecessary low-value work to take up time...
I could and have just copied the program via SFTP and unzip it to set it up....
(This is a testing and does not need to be in production...)
I have better things I could be doing and just want to get this done and closed but ... -
Been meaning to rant about this for awhile. Currently in college and in this class we have to write BASH scripts which isn't ever that hard. Except for the fact that everything is checked against a pre-written script. FUCK I just wrote a complex script that does work but because it's not EXACT its coming back failed even tho it prints everything correct and works.
So now instead of fixing the script I'm back on DevRant wasting more time.1 -
Am I the only one wondering when the IT bubble is going to burst? I mean, I'm getting paid ridiculous money for things that could be done by trained monkey, I barely work more than 4h per contract and every year I either get a raise or swap job for one that gives it to me. How long can this go on? When the big tech layoffs started I though that's it, but nope. How the hell does this function12

Wrote a whole http request script to do direct calls to google woth the whole oauth, which where successfull, and after all this work the request responds with a fuck you, the account does not exists response. Apparently it does not give authorization for service accounts and i will be forced to use the google api request to make this fucking thing work. Fuck google.

Am I the only one who feels like morning scrum meetings are a complete waste of time? At least in the way that my team does them. It's 30 minutes of "I did this thing yesterday, and I will continue to do that same thing today." All of this information can be sent in an email, but we insist on meeting every morning to say the same exact things.
For the past 3 weeks, the majority of the team has said the same exact things during scrum: "I continued to work on this big feature yesterday. Thank you." Like how does a detailed retelling of what this person did yesterday pertain to the rest of the team? It's just meeting for the sake of meeting, and talking for the sake of talking.
If you have this little technical issue that only pertains to work that this single person is doing, then meet with that person separately and discuss it. There's no reason to make everybody else sit and listen to information that will never be useful to them.
And most of the time, this scrum stems into spontaneous unplanned longer meetings afterwards. So suddenly this "quick" 30 minute scrum turns in 2-hours of meetings and a morning wasted on information that could've easily been discussed over email instead5 -
Status: Got off hour+ long call with provider teir2 tech support because their "sync service" isn't syncing. "It's all cloud controlled" they tell me. Whatever.
It does have the ability to install a Windows service to do the needful! 🎉
However the program that does the actual syncing is the "launcher" application, and the service's only job is to tell the launcher to run. 🤦♂️
Their assumption is that there will be a user that gets smacked in the face with a UAC prompt when they first log in and just shrug it away. Which is the Launcher application.
The sync service is not capable of running the sync application without a desktop session I guess?
MOTHERTRUCKERS do you understand what the point of a Windows Service is?!?
I tried relating this situation to how Windows Update works: It will update whenever the fuck it wants without the user doing anything because of the Service, and you only configure the service with the Control Panel/Settings App. You don't need the Control Panel/Settings App running in order for Windows Update to work, but it's there for status info and configuration.
Anyways, this software does not do that. It apparently *requires* both the service AND the launcher program running in order to work. Not work properly, to work *at all*.
Anyways, It's installed on a computer that's not normally logged into, but is always on (where other "always needs to be running" programs live). Normally the hackaround would be to launch the program via Scheduled Task.
This program apparently does not want to run as a scheduled task, or the Task Scheduler is being stupid and can't figure out "Hey, it's time to run this program. Do it!". Naturally it runs if told manually.
The fact that I'm even doing this at all is stupid, but even more infuriating is that it's just not working unattended. You know, what the service should be doing. But no, the service runs happily all alone, doing nothing of note, while Task Scheduler sucks its stick running OneDrive installer but not the launcher program.

I have a PHP related question.
I noticed a few frameworks make use of this structure of code and it makes absolutely no sense to me. There would be a PHP file, and the contents of the file would be as follows:
<?php
return [
‘a’ => ‘b’
];
My only understanding is that this is an array/object but I have no idea how these values would even be accessed.
Like, there is no array variable, how can a php file simply return something into a void? There isn’t a function or variable to catch that array.
How does this even work?23 -

First, follow the tutorial and don't try to do anything fancy, finish it and have it in a working state
Second, start experimenting, can this be improved? How? Does it still work?
Last, transcend. Develop your own way of doing it.
If you don't go through these stages properly you might get stuck and frustrated and never get whatever you're working on in a working state, resulting in hating the technology.2 -
I’m a mobile developer, iOS is my main platform. When I work for local clients, from Serbia and region, in most cases I get design by Android standards, Android native features etc, and they usually don’t have understanding for changing to iOS native features and that is just ugly, less quality UX and frustrating. In my region Android is main platform. Does anyone have this kind of problems? Is this happening at your place? Please share your experience, it will help me a lot with mine fights with windmills!5

My coworker cannot log in to his company email account. So I contacted the guys in charge of this by email, asking if they could help and asked whats the process now or how does this work. I assume if his email is not working, they cannot send him a password reset link.
their answer: yeah, sure, we reseted the password of the mentioned user, here is his new password5 -
So there's this remote guy on my team that basically doesn't do much and when it does fucks up. This is a guy with a lot experience but it doesn't seem even give a fuck. He doesn't pay attention to standups and he has more time than me in the project but doesn't know that much about it. There are rare times when he gives good ideas. However this happena so rarely that it is awful to work with him.1

Has this ever happened to you? Some code you're trying to execute does not work at home. Then the next day when you're showing it to the team it works perfectly (yes, I know I'm a bad coder). 😁 programming: the art of creating things without knowing how you did it3

I am in this weird situation, where I work with a pretty cool team and have an awesome commute to work, and a nice salary. But I don't like the actual work that I am doing, nor the why I our team is run. Due to some personal events coming up and being still fairly new in the job I also don't want to switch (yet). Does somebody have/had similar experiences?

This weekend, I bought a mechanical keyboard to use at work. I'm worried the clicking sound will bother my co-workers around me. Does anybody know if bringing the keyboard to work will make people hate me?
It's a Logitech G610 with Cherry MX Red switches. I ordered some rubber o-rings on Amazon to dampen the keys. They should be coming in tomorrow. Should I risk bringing the keyboard into work before I dampen the keys?7 -

for the life of me I cannot figure out in my mind how to structure this project I want to start, and jumping right into coding does not improve this mental block.
At work this Golang code base has a clean architecture, so easy to maintain and extend, and I'm unable to replicate it on my own project(s). It sucks to be an ignorant.2 -
Ok, so we know you've not had any work to do for a week. Here's what we'll do - pick up this task to copy & paste shit code from one project to another. Don't worry yourself with what it does.

When your frontend does not really get what your backend is trying to say...
This is oalley.net. Apart from the fact that their frontend and backend do not work together very well, it is a nice tool to mark reachable areas on a map based on the starting point, the means of transportation and the maximum time.5 -
hey guys, im a total noob and new to this field. this post is open for criticism and suggestions.
so i wanna forecast slippage (dependent) using the % WT Plan (planned work, the predictor).

how does this look to you? insights and comments are appreciated. thanks!43 -
This Capstone group blows. There’s five of us in total, and only two of us are actually doing work on this fucking Django application.
Seriously, how hard is it to use Git and GitHub? I assigned a single page to a group member.. and what does this fucker do? Sends me the .html file on Slack.
And all that page consisted of was TWO JUMBOTRONS. None of the functionality I asked for was there whatsoever.
These people are seniors in an engineering school. Fuckssake, get your shit together.

I have a job with health insurance but I’m so stressed out that I overeat and so busy that I don’t have time for prolonged exercise to burn more calories. Ironic that I was healthier when I worked for a diet and exercise company 100% remote that didn’t have a health plan vs driving to work for one that does have a health plan. This feels really upside down.3

I'm kinda amazed at how simple it is to host my private git server on my raspberry pi. That being said I couldn't get it to work well as an access point with hostapd. Therefore pushing and pulling while on my home wifi works like a charm, but doing this in public requires ethernet. Having an Ethernet run from outside my backpack really does make me look like some hacker terrorist person, especially in NYC7

So we now answer IT support calls. I’m a developer that does help desk support work. Is it just me, or does anyone else find that extremely fucking annoying? I don’t want to spend my day being interrupted all the time to solve an IT problem when I’m employed as a developer. Fuck sake. The worst bit about all of this is I can’t find another job because there aren’t any. Glorious.1

Poor specifications are the worst..
I developed an application for a client of the Company i work at.
Everything done according to what i was told, but since they cant keep/remember the specifications we agreed upon, i keep getting contacted about stuff that does not work. And everytime its because they changed something and is now not using the program as intended... anyone been in this situation?
i mean i account for the hours spent modifying, but it pisses me off..2 -

So, I am doing a complete burn and rebuild of a C++ library into a C# library. My question: this thing uses GDI/OpenGL to do graphics things (Mostly rendering lines and shapes over images). Is it worth trying to use WPF for that, or does GDI/OpenGL work in C#?2 -
Have to work on Windows for a DLL integration project, how does Microsoft managed to build something so disgusting to human eyes for all these years?
Dark mode in Visual Studio Installer is actually pitch black, hello? Common sense? Basic human-computer interfacing? Basic color scheming?
All these installations, frameworks, version management...
Why am I dipping myself into this bloatware shitshow?3 -
I was invited to on-site interview with Amazon, but the more I think about this opportunity the more doubts I have. After reading a lot of reviews, it is expected to be the hardest job with a lot of pressure and overtime. My biggest concern - the poor work life balance. Spending all my life at work is not what I really want.
Should I give it up or does it still worth trying?5 -
Why are hooks so awful?
What justifies having everyone using React relearn how to do things when hooks do not bring any new features to React?
Why does getting setInterval to work with hooks require a ~3000 word blog post by a maintainer which constantly assures you this IS a step forward?
Is scrolling up and down a class component really so hard that this clusterfuck is worth it?

Just spent 3 fucking hours trying to find out why my tests are failing. I'm mocking ef with an in memory sqlite dB as THE FUCKING. Net docs say to.
My code does a simple decimal comparison in a linq statement and returns bullshit. Why? Sqlite does not have a decimal type, it does some sort of BULLSHIT to convert it into some sort of text value.
I change all my models to use doubles instead of decimals and all my tests turn green.
WTF IS THIS SHIT. If it doesn't work don't tell me to use it. I expect better of the. Net docs. Wtf are they doing.3 -
Seriously, wtf give the work to someone else, claiming that "I'm too busy to do this", when all that other person does is come asking you for help, and not only do you have to figure out what needs to be done, you need to figure out how the other person fucked it up and try to fix it without hurting any feelings. Oh, and, yes, I was too busy for doing what is essentially double work.

Stuck between: raging because the entire team lacks solid leadership which pisses me off. Makes it completely inefficient. I can't tell the boss about this because he'll just make me the lead and I'll end up having to do more fucking work.

God damn stupid piece of shit Glide library doesn't work for shit. Who wrote this garbage? I did everything correctly but the fucking image still doesn't get displayed. You won't believe this fucking bullshit I saw in a site right now.
My mom is trying to setup a something from work and the sysadmin guy asked to download a remote desktop software called "ammyy". As I try to help her download the software in Google Chrome, the site says "Google Chrome or Firefox does not support this download. Use internet explorer to download".
Wtf is this bullshit?!
To make matters worse, that site does not even have HTTPS enabled!
I'm speechless. -
Found this in one of the group's I'm in on Facebook. When everyone called him out on scamming people into helping him mine Etherium, he responded with so much word salad about entrepreneurship and blockchain he could open up a vegetarian eatery.
Very professional. I'm sure someone is gonna land a dream job on this one.1 -
Me every time I get an email from recruiters:

"* Is the word " + taboo + " even in the job specs?\n";

How does on-call work for your company? Our product is mostly used in the US so any pages we get are mostly in the US time. Despite that, our team has US and EU folk and me (an EU folk) am expected to wake up middle of the night for any pages that occur. I consider this a really shit model not just for employees but for the business, but I wanted to know if this is common and I'm just not seeing the point of this.20

That moment when you need to add a functionality to your program (coded months ago), and go "Why does my head work this way...", after seeing the complex code that needs to be sorted & fit with the new function.
-
This may be wrong, but I've come to see, that it's really easy to find out, who programs because they like it, and who does it for the work. Simply ask: "if you had a really great idea for a program, would you make it open-source?"
Most of the time, people who want to make it open-source, are the people who genuinely like to code. At least that's the observation I've made.1 -
Last week a client had a meeting regarding an app I built for them for this one time project. This meeting occurred Monday.
Thursday I get a call at 8 am where they ask if they can get some fixups regarding the UI by Friday.
This despite the client knowing I work more than full time at another company and only take his business on the side.
Why does this always happen? You deliver a product and don't hear from the clients for days or weeks and suddenly they pop up and ask for a fix by the next day?
Ugh...4 -
How would you call this role? Product Owner? Graphics Designer?, Both? Neither?
I work for a small startup besides university and we do need a person responsible for how site looks. But then again we also need a product owner for the frontend. So why not combine these roles? A person who's responsable as product owner for all the frontend related bits plus does the designing. Initially this person would work with just one frontend dev, possibly more over time.
Question:
- How would you call this role/job?
- What would be an appropriate salary?
- How would you evaluate an application to this role?3 -
How does this function not work??? It worked TWO phucking days ago... WHYYYYYY??? I hate compilerbuilding4

Other dev in my department thought it was okay to comment out the latest version of jquery lib that was used in the project and replace it with about 2 year old version to make his feature work. He did not informed anybody about this and today when build was tested, blame was on me because the feature i implemented does not work. I found issue was because of old jquery lib he put.
Funny thing is, his feature does not work with latest jquery version.
I guess it's gotta be either me or him. -

Why is it that windows 10's network adapter takes so fucking long in order to work and connect to the internet!!
Does anyone know a way to trace back what's causing it? And why it takes like full 15 minutes for the Ethernet or wifi drivers to even work? (I'm not even sure if this is something with the drivers or the way windows's network adapter way of working)
I couldn't find Jack shit on the internet (most of them are ghetto do this and that and hope it works) I want something more advanced so I can figure out for once why this happens on numerous windows computers
(Linux people, I understand you, please don't rant your stuff here, this is a bit serious issue, thx)6 -
So, I just downloaded Enki, and I love it. It is like the duoLingo of coding. Most other platforms don't hold you to a regimen, but Enki does. My favorite is the "Does it work in IE8" game! I really hope to sharpen my skills with this app.

Wait. Why does this work? It doesn't copy any of the frontend code into the deploy location.
I'm not sure how this works, but it does. Crap, there goes my morning tracking down this wretched spaghetti deploy code.
At least I understand how it works in production. Shit, why is it different between production and our integ servers ,that isn't good. Maybe I can just refactor it.
That was all on Monday. It's now Wednesday and I'm still fucking refactoring something that wasn't actually broken. It just didn't make sense.
Maybe I should just revert my last three days of work on this branch and move on. No! It's too late, I've invested way too much time into this project...
... and I'm almost done, just a few more commits right? -
While being an intern I had to make a finance system, no requirements except for the fact that it has to invoice the right person...
As soon as it was seemingly done, I'd go to the customer and he'd just say "why isn't x in there? This isn't what I meant! Where is y feature? Why does it work like this and not like that?" etc...
I had 0 experience, and was just told to make stuff as I went, horrible experience and truly the most frustrating project I've ever done. -
So I have to mimic some codes that I was not given any explanation because it's from a team that is, like, the only one that does not like the others and we have to work with them.
All the teams do codes with similar coding rules
and then there is this team. Weirdly enough, they are the most strict on their rules. -
Literally can't afford to sleep less than 6 hours two nights in a row. If I do, like I did last night, my dumb tired sleepwalking ass will just turn off my two alarms and be late for work by like an hour.
How does something like this happen? I have no recollection of waking up even briefly to turn off my alarms but I know I wouldn't sleep in consciously on a work day, so whom can I even blame?3 -
Why does it have to be so incredibly hard to get an nvidia card to work under Linux? The driver is in available, we have the technology but every time I try to get this damned thing to work I end up in front of a fucked XServer and this stupid "Something went wrong" gdm screen only to apt-purge nvidia from my drive and start from the beginning once more.5

This isn't so much of a rant, but it is about interviews.
I have interviews in the coming weeks for internships/work experience with local game studios and software companies
Does anybody have any tips for a newbie to working in the industry. What I should expect from the interview what they might be looking for and so on.
Thanks6 -
Me: Why is the record not there? Why? Why? Does this database even work?
2 mins later: Damn. I had a "limit 10" at the end of the SQL. -
Some people have this attitude of not giving a fuck. Like if something does not work, they'll be like "yeah" and move on.
If I can't perform some task at my work, I get crazy but for some it's just nothing. Like yeah so it happened.2 -
<ideaForTheFutureOfProgramming>
I wish there was a way for PROgrammers with Jobs to share their work with someone who does not have a job, but yet need practise. I think in the future someone could post a part of a project to a website and someone could finish IT and return it to them. The person posting the project could also optionaly give something in return. (money, money on steam) This way newbies get practise and experience, while people can get work done. This was thought up by a 15 years old boy.

Does anyone have experience with bad engineering coaches?
We have a new guy who came in to my team as a coach, and it has made my work life so much more stressful.
It’s hard to put my finger on what is wrong, but this guy seems to lack a bit of perspective on his role at the company.
He is not a manager — he does not have any formal power — yet talks as if he were in charge of the team.
This goes from changing the way we do stand up, to inserting himself into any technical discussion going on in the office. It has gotten to the point where I will hold technical discussions in other parts of the office to avoid him.3 -
My work does not use fucking version control of any kind.... Today I had to look over some old report I did, which contained a few errors, the script to create this report I have since modified so I have no idea when this went wrong and the script now is also not functioning properly for this task...
I know it's my own fault but fucking goddammit why don't we just use git?!!?!5 -
I need to figure out a way uniquely identify each computer which visits the web site I am creating. Does anybody have any advice on how to achieve this?

"Come on, people! Engage with my post!"
It does not works like that, obviously.
And yet every single fucker who comes to give some mandatory training says something like this.
Bitch, if no one engages with your "chair safety PowerPoint", it is because it sucks. Not necessarily due to your delivery, the material itself sucks.
So stop asking for engagement and just give us the quizz and we can all get back to work already!1 -
Yesterday, I performed an experiment on myself.
I have heard pretty much that a cup of strong black coffee at night keeps you awake the entire night. Newbie here when it comes to staying up all night ( I mean I stay up late but never all night) so I decided to give it a go.
I'm unsure about the results though.
First off, how strong is a strong coffee? One teaspoon coffee per cup? Am I allowed to add a teaspoon of sugar?
Next, I think it kinda also have to do with me. I mean, I have heard it doesn't give me sleep so my personal bias affected it. I wanted it to be true. To be a life hack for that huge ass paper due by tomorrow.
Maybe it does work. At around 4 in the morning I was too tired with the shit I was doing so I decided to finally lay down. I recall this brief moment when I was in my bed all ready to sleep and the sleep wouldn't come. Maybe that's the coffee working. But again, it could just be normal.
Does it not work? If it does, how do I make it work? 😣9 -
People thinking their computer problem justifies them being rude.
I've literally been in the middle of a conversation and someone walks up and hands me their computer and says "can you fix this?". Just because you work 20 feet away from me does not mean I'm your personal IT help.4 -
Does anyone work with EditorConfig files in VS?
dotnet_naming_rule.Variable_bool.symbols = Variable_bool

dotnet_naming_style.Variable_bool.required_prefix = b
dotnet_naming_style.Variable_bool.capitalization = camel_case
dotnet_naming_rule.Variable_bool.severity = suggestion
this is part of one i'm currently working on. My intention is to let it detect every boolean variable that is not named correctly. Am i doing this right? Am I missing something? (Because at the moment it doesn't work).9 -
So an update to this

Linux does not have drivers for the Quadro FX 1800. Linux also gives zero fucks and works anyway1 -
Every, single, time, Windows, updates, and reboot...
I do not know what I did wrong with this Mint. It works perfectly until I reboot to Windows. So Windows update itself, I have to reboot and, after finishing all Windows boots, when I come back to Linux it does not work anymore.9 -
Why does my Windows PC work fine on Weekends and slow on Weekdays. I really don't get the logic. This happening after creator update. Anyone knows what type of bug/feature this is? fuck2

I need to change how payments are applied to invoices.
ApplyPolicyPayments() looks promising! Make changes to the method to look at the bills in order of the invoice due dates.
Run a test on the DEV environment, and the system is still exhibiting the same bug.
At this point, I wrote a quick logging plugin that I could attach to the DLL and start telling me what is going on.
Turns out, payments are actually applied in a method named BalancePolicy(). So what does ApplyPolicyPayments() do? It DOES apply payments to bills, but then just doesn't save the work. Having it commit the transactions breaks the billing system. FML. -
I know it will be disturbing for a few of you, but it has to be said...

Does anybody know any good software engineering companies to work for around LA? I'm looking for an entry level software engineering position. Full stack would be ideal, but at this point I just want to get my foot in the door with a good company where I can learn a lot. Maybe even a company that knows how to have fun too (if that's not too much to ask hehe 😅).3

Sooo i made this program that uses both chromium but also is a rest server. (they need to be together for this program)
Soo the rest server requieres to be run with sudo
But the chromium Browser must not. It says must provide --no sandbox (to run as sudo)
so then i added --no sandbox
and it works like i wanted it.
However every application seems to be glitching sometimes (only ui) but no lag etc.
How can i stop it from glitching :0 i mean it does work though13 -
My dream Job Interview
Today I was interviewed by my dream company to work at. I'm still in school and it's an apprenticeship for computer science.
I had to develop a program, on a flip board which finds equilateral triangles. I was given a few points with coordinates on it and should think of something. I didn't get halfway through it.
Does anyone think that this is to much for an 17 year old still at school?
I'm so concerned that they don't take me because of this challenge.2 -
So I’m going through a CKAD course. There is a section about checking the status of our Pods or the application running in it through Readiness/Liveness Probes— they mostly use an HTTP test, but there is a TCP option as well. My question is, how will the TCP test work on HTTP/2 given that it does not have TCP (it rather uses QUIC)? Sorry if this is a dumb question.1

For a project I'm working on:
Does your work allow you to sign in to your personal accounts for i.e. Gmail or Facebook on your work device?
Do you think this should be allowed?
Do you do it yourself?
I imagine it's a gray area. I'm even thinking it could be a security risk? But maybe healthier too to keep business and private life separate? Thoughts?4 -

So there was this position in our college for part time programming/building a project. Being university students looking for part time work a lot of us applied there.
Finally the person that was selected among all of us was the person who does no work and is completely useless. If you ask her to do something she despite taking a long time doesn't produce any output.
So my question is what did the interviewers see in her that they selected her despite multiple way better people applying.4 -
Asdfghjkl keys does not work! Not git push, no save! Oh fuck my screen was locked so no on-screen keyboard! Mother fuck! Is this a quick solve for MBP? New keyboard cost £14.99 on eBay.2

So I've come to a crossroads and I'm trying to work out what the best way forward is and I have a question for y'all.
Is a university degree still worth it in this field? Should I go for it and get my degree or spend that time learning myself? How does this effect getting a job? And if you could go back, what would you do.
Thanks in advance.4 -
just found out that someone that I work with intentionally changes the priority and busy/free status of ALL meetings from management to "low" and "free" (he does this manually) just so he doesn't have to go to the meetings if he doesn't want (which is typically 2x week for 30 min)6

We've got a printer made by HP, not the newest make, but it used to work and it still does, but only when printing from Windows. MacOS and Linux printer support stopped working after a cups update some years ago. Setting up a new linux laptop, I just wanted to check, but the issue is still not fixed. HP website offers a "virtual agent" which turns out to be an unhelpful chatbot, so probably devrant is the right place to state that this still does not work. Unfortunately I live in Germany, a country that still requires some amount of paperwork.3

@all, picture the scene, your employer hired a Dev into an equal level role to you, he was running his own company, handed off to his father and brother. You now hear your employer is purchasing 40% in said company to outsource 'certain' projects too (off shore developers). You don't really rate this developers skills AND the work so far from this outsourced group has been sub par. How does this make you feel? What issues do you perceive? Am i right to feel concerned?5

So, I have this colleague (tho he is a student in my company, while I'm an employee), who wants to build a site, but doesn't want to learn how to build one...
I literally gave him everything one needs, yet he still complains about it not working the way he wants...
He literally does one out of 3 things:
- play shitty games and cheats in them
- attempt to build a site without understanding the "why does it work?"
- bother me with dumb questions that have been asked 1000000 times on StackOverflow... -
FUCKING SHIT, I HATE THIS
Does anyone have problems with axios?
I've been trying to make this work for at least 1 hour. If I use Postman, it works alright, but using axios messes it up.
Practically what happens it's that Django does not picks the foreign keys, it loads all the fields except those two.
I've been like fucking crazy trying to understand what's going on but to no avail... I want to die, it's friday and this stupid thing is delaying me more than it should3 -

Event invitations sent from other people's Google calendar to my German GMX inbox: this still does not work! Google does not let my add my German GMX e-mail address as an alternate address in my account (only a red border around email input with no error text whatsoever) and any invitations to GMX end in your 404 robot page. Seriously, Google?! Seriously, GMX?! But you both have so many customers, why care about details anymore...1

What is a good way of enforcing rules (particularly following release procedures, cut off dates) for a team?
Other than the rules need to be well defined and written down, I'm thinking there needs to be a consequence for violations....

But not sure what's a good one, does it work out is this too Draconian?9 -

I'm analyzing representatives in 20K Italian companies.
Every representative has two attributes:
* sex $RepresentativesSection.RepresentativeList.Representative.Individual.Sex
* birthLabelGenere
$RepresentativesSection.RepresentativeList.Representative.Individual.Birth.BirthLabelGenere
I made a query to find all representatives that has changed the sex.
Why I did this? Because I can.
It worked? No, the provider removed data of people that changed the sex.
I found only one person that has no BirthLabelGenere data
Fortunately it does not work, it's illegal in Italy store this kind of data
Why the hell the provider added this attribute?
RepresentativesSection.RepresentativeList.Representative.Individual.Birth.BirthLabelGenere1 -

Jesus Christ , how does one connect to a third party websocket stream in Laravel. It seems to be so damn complicated with the involvement of Pusher, Broadcast, Echo and a bunch of other useless packages. On Top of that there are no tutorials on this, everyone is busy building a chat app and even then i tried following along, it doesn't work. Does anyone know how to do this?
In python, it is as simple as this
import websocket
SOCKET = "wss://stream.binance.com/ws/..."
ws = websocket.WebSocketApp(
SOCKET, on_open=on_open, on_close=on_close, on_message=on_message
) //you get the damn data
In Laravel, it so bloody complicated. -

Does anyone know a good method, or library to match 2 gps locations based on proximity to each-other?
while being fed a few 100 GPS locations per device per hour.
I currently do it by having the client send their Geohash to a database, then request all neighboring hashes around it and all other clients in those hashes, then get their GPS to check for distance.
But this does not seem to work flawlessly, it works on tests and emulators (its for phones) but on real phones it seems to be hit an miss, but no errors, the event just does not seem to fire.4 -
SAFARI! What the hell do Apple think they are doing? This has to be the worst browser available, or I should say not available! Problem: It won't load pages; it continually freezes; it just doesn't work. And, there is no use clearing out history, resetting, etc. Apple's folly still just does not work. Every update takes it a further step backwards. If this is the best technology on offer, then it does not bode well for the future.
