My girlfriend knows what a coder needs when it’s their birthday. Lucky to have her. Walked into my room and it was set up like this.51
-
A few days ago while browsing devRant, my girlfriend stopped me at this one post and asked why does this person have a rubber duck. I went on to explain her about Rubber Duck Debugging. She was totally amazed by the concept (she's not a techie). Today suddenly a package arrived at my door step from her.
Well now I have an entire family of rubber ducks to code with :D22 -
A devDuck update!
Hey everyone,
First off, thank you to everyone who has purchased a devDuck (or a bunch!) and thanks to all who have given us feedback. @trogus and I are thrilled at the incredible response these ducks have gotten. If you haven’t seen them yet, you can check them out at https://devDucks.com or the devRant Swag Shop (https://swag.devrant.io).
We are trying to process all of the orders as quickly as possible and our goal is to have all current orders out by the middle of this coming week. Many orders have already shipped, but if yours hasn’t, rest assured it will very soon!
If you ordered a Java devDuck or cape, your order might be delayed a bit until the middle of this coming week because Java seems to be a heavily-demanded cape and we needed to get the material shipped in to make more of that, specifically.
So far we’ve gotten some awesome feedback from the community. A short list of possible future additions based on what’s been requested: Go devDuck, Kotlin devDuck, Perl devDuck, Android devDuck, and possibly some devDuck accessories like little hats, sunglasses, headphones, etc. If you have any other ideas just let us know:)
Lastly, please know that even with the launch of devDucks, we remain extremely committed to the devRant product and we have some very exciting big devRant features coming very soon.
Thanks again everyone!28 -
0. Plan before you code. Document everything. You won't remember either your idea or those clever implementations next week (or next month, or next year...).
1. Don't hack your way through, unless that's what you intend to do. Name your variables, functions etc. neatly: autocomplete exists!
Protip: Sometimes you want to check a quick language feature or a piece of code from one of your modules. Resist the urge to quickly hack in the test into your actual project. Maintain a separate file where you can quickly type in and check what you're looking for without hacking on your project (For example, in Python, you can open a new terminal or IDLE window for those quick tests).
2. Keep a quiet environment where you can focus. Recommend listening to something while coding (my latest fad is on asoftmurmur.com). Don't let anything distract you and throw your contextual awareness out of whack.
3. Rubber ducks work. Really. Talking out a complex piece of logic, or that regex or SQL query aids your mind greatly in grasping the concept and clearing the idea. Bounce off code and ideas with a friend or colleague to catch errors and oversights faster. Read more here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
4. Since everyone else is saying this (and because it merits saying), USE VERSION CONTROL. Singular most important thing to software development aside from planning and documenting.
5. Remember to flout all of the above once in a while and just make a mess of a project where you have fun throwing everything around all over the place. You'll make mistakes that you never thought were possible by someone of your caliber :) That's how you learn.
Have fun, keep learning!3 -
So I didn't know why I kept seeing rubber ducks on devRant. Apparently, I'm not very good at typing today, either.
The result? I now have to explain why I Googled "rubber dick debugging" at work.6 -
i've been working with my plan to make a small software development company for a while now.
time to implement my plan
Finalizing my plan: Done
Quit my job: Done
Ordering Office Requirements : Shipping
a Server : Shipping
Dozen of Rubber Ducks : Shipping
etc...
so here it is, Day 0; repurposing my bunker to be my small office !
new life, new hope26 -
Ok, rubber ducks are ducking helpful, but I moved to use actual ducks.
If you are currently stuck somewhere where your rubber-mate cannot help out, feel free to ask. I’ll forward.14 -
I came from a village, we have animals (like a farm), pigs, chicken, sometimes duck and goose. One day I had to work from home, bc had to come back to parents house. Our daily skype meeting was like this:
* discussing very important IT stuff *
* grandma rushes into my room *
me: sorry, but i have a meeting
grandma: i just wan...
me: but i cannot right no...
grandma: just wanted to know if...
me: grandma, I cannot right now, we have a skyp... im talking with colleagues, on the computer
grandma: * quiet voice * okay, i dont want to interrupt, I just want to know - Did you ordered the ducks?
* what I hear in headphones: collegues and boss LOLd sooo hard *
me: ffs, what ducks?
grandma: did your father not give you the guys number?
me: * starting to sweat * what guy? no he didnt, i have no idea what youre talking about
grandma: * disappointed * then who gonna order them...?
me: ...
grandma: * standing next to me, she hears the laughter * whats that?
since then, if im working from home every skype meeting starts with "Tommy, is your grandma there? HAHA!"7 -
A recruiter from Amazon scheduled me a phone conversation with a hiring manager. So I took it in my room, cozy in my PJ's, but the manager decided he wants the video enabled. And that's when I realized what he's seeing right behind me...41

My friend had the bright idea of making a version of bubble sort that plays a quacking sound effect on every swap. I added in different variations of the same sound effect for various conditions.
We named it "Quacksort," and one of the professors asked us to present it to the intro class.
My career has reached its peak.3 -
devRant, you've missed the opportunity to swap desk ducks for little humans. Still awesome idea though.6
-
Rubber duck company meeting in 1998:
Okay folks, our sales are plummeting, we need new ideas... NOW!
Employee: Let's brainwash developers! Make them think our ducks magically solve their debugging issues....
Other employees: *rofl*
CEO: Brilliant, let's do that.3 -
Probably the first one to get kickass devDucks! Thanks @dfox for hand delivering them. You always make sure that I have swags before everyone. Ducks are amazing and great great great quality. Duck currently I’ve on my desk gonna feel jealous now!5
-
I made a wordpress plugin
(don't ask, it's practice for an internship)
The plugin turns every element that does not have a child into an image of a rubber ducky at a speed of 6 rubber ducks a minute.13 -
Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to introduce you to my latest employee, Dave the Duck! Dave is the new head of debugging and took the job to support his out-of-hand caffeine addiction and 72 children (of which paternity tests are still being done on 10). Dave is also wanted in 4 countries as the leader of the popular gang, known as the Dangerous Ducks. Please do no feed Dave, as he is on a strict diet. #DaveTheDuck #ProgrammersTools #ImNotThatCrazy10

My lil girl has a habit of bringing me her rubber ducks whenever she sees me sitting down and just chilling. But this far she has (funny enough) done it twice whilst I am coding.
This time she got me super duck!!!
:) i love my lil girl13 -

*Just got a package delivered, didn't check yet*
Friend: who sends you stuff from from the USA?
I (excited as fuck): uh it must be my
DevRant
Duck
Delivery.
Friend: your what?
I explain, he walks away not giving a fuck.
But I don't care what he thinks, i love my new devDucks. Oh and special thanks to @dfox for the autograph. Well technically you just signed the customs declaration, but an autograph none the less.3 -
If y'all need a lil help with clients and conversating, here's my personal way of ending conversations. Just acknowledge it! (If all else fails, take things into consideration)
Friend: I hear that the most viewed youtube video ever is now despacito
> I acknowledge that
*conversation end*
Co-worker: I love my new shoes!
> I acknowledge that
*end*
Hot girl: hey sexy, you're looking fine today
> I acknowledge that
*end*
Client: hey could you add x?
> No
*end*
Sibling: you're adopted
> I acknowledge that
*end*
(Consideration example)
Windows: I will update
> I will take that into consideration
*end*
trogus: I will make a line of debugging ducks with capes with their respective language on it
dfox: I acknowledge that
*end*
Bus driver: sir please wake up the busses are closed
> I acknowledge that *sleeps*
*end*
Python: wrong amount of tabs/spaces
> I acknowledge that *uninstalls python*
*end*
devRant: you are running out of characters for this rant

My gf loves rubber ducks so much, I'm just waiting for her to learn coding just for the debugging process :D6 -
My girlfriend knows me so well 😂 She got me a baby coding duck in a bottle (bought at the Boston Tea Party museum, nickel for scale) 😍6
-
When I encounter a bug, I gather my 3 rubber ducks, pull out my imaginary whiteboard and tell them - "Differential diagnosis - Go!"", then proceed to snidely shoot down every suggestion they come up with.6
-
My devDucks are here! Love at first sight 😍😍😍😍
I can finally talk to someone who will understand me 😂6 -
My duck came in, along with his two capes, the stickers I forgot to ask for, and the note I requested.
In the special instructions box, I asked that they include a note that said something random, and they delivered.
"devRant ducks do dances directly downstairs daily"
Well done @dfox @trogus or whoever does the shipments, I'm thoroughly entertained :D8 -
Winner EVERY time?! This could be the best arcade machine for devs!
Found this at my local movie theater.11 -
Walked through a part of my home city that I hadn't been to for a while. Look what has opened up there.9
-
!dev
lol I keep getting in trouble over people taking secondhand-offense, and managers keep bringing up the same instances like I’m somehow at fault.
Look, if Alice says something to Bob, and Carol hears it and gets offended on Bob’s behalf, but Bob doesn’t? Carol should jump off a bridge.10 -
A non-dev friend just saw the "free santa hat with each duck ordered" announcement on my screen and he is extremely confused 😂4
-
So a friend of me bought 200 rubber ducks for 90 bucks. He's now waiting for a 14Kg package to arrive.7
-
I just discovered a local beer brewery called Crazy Duck. Now that's my kind of debugging buddy!
I'm buying some the moment I get back from vacation to test them on a legacy PHP project.2 -
It's my birthday and I just got enough upvotes for some stickers.
We need rubber ducks now devRant.6 -
Not to give anyone ideas but...😁
How James Veitch tortured his roommates with rubber ducks.
https://youtu.be/f5d8pVg3Qtg6 -
I think devRant should introduce a cactus to give besides the ducks, as I've seen a lot of people here wanting to shove cactuses on others where the sun doesn't shine. 😂7
-
HOLD THE FUCK ON!
Since when has devrant had a swag store?!
Never knew it existed untill like an hour ago, guess I'm loading up on dev ducks on pay day!5 -
Ducks are just like programmers. They might seem calm on the surface, but they're flailing wildly underneath4
-
I recently had to explain to my girlfriend why I was searching for rubber ducks on Amazon.
She doesn't get it. I swear I haven't caught another weird addiction! 😨 🐤5 -
I recently had been on a vacation to Singapore and Malaysia, and out of 1000+ pics/videos I clicked, this one's taken specially for you guys 🤗4
-
DevDucks. By the plumage you can tell they're arch master race. Seen today while out in the daylight.12
-
So for my senior night last night, all the seniors got gifts. I said that I wanted rubber ducks. I got all these ducks AND a FUCKING HUGE DUCK (currently deflated, I'll post a picture sometime).
These fuckers went all out and got me this many fucking ducks. I will never have a debugging issue again in my life15 -
Just found out devRant store sells rubber ducks.
Now I feel I must get some because I'm the real rubber duck.5 -
!rant
Dear dfox and trogus,
Is it possible to arrange a secret santa kind of duck gift sharing campaign once a year? Not necessary need to be a xmas campaign. We can wait until you update the shopping cart process with the feature 😬
Each user can buy ducks for other users. You can contact the recipients for the address if you don't have yet and do the delivery.25 -
Nvidia makes real time ray tracing and a ehole bunch of graphics stuff beyond our imagination but they can't make a linux driver that actually works well... For ducks sake11
-
CLIPPY IS BACK! Who needs rubber ducks when you can have this old friend back?
https://channel9.msdn.com/coding4fu...4 -
My lecturer went out and bought us all rubber ducks to encourage our "rubber duck debugging". Honestly the highlight of my semester.3
-
Why developers like yellow ducks only, what's wrong with white duck?
Is that what they call racism??8 -
I wonder if the meeting at Rubber ducks quack association goes like this...
Why the hell doesn't my guy see the problem? It's fucking right there! Why don't you see it??? OMG! I request for a change of owner.1 -
Oh boy how do I put it?
So I am an introvert and I have a strange question.
But first some context is needed. I am mostly nice to people not because I like every one but because I think it would only waste my time arguing with them so I just start to ignore the person I don't like. Which puts me in a strange situation where a lot of people think I am their friend where I don't care about them heck I don't know names of some.
Now because I am introvert people/friends see me as someone they could unload their secrets on (knowing I won't tell anyone (because I don't gossip(because it's waste of time) ) ). So I know almost every gossip worthy shit that I don't want to know about or don't care. Sometimes they even ask me for some relationship advice and then it seems like I am like a rubber duck for extroverted people cause at that point they kind of ask questions that clearly they want some specific answer (wich if I don't provide they will say themselves). Also it is also lame to ask me as I have never been in a relationship (I am an Indian and here somehow people seams to get in a relationship just to be in a relationship. (cause it's "modern", "forward thinking" "cool") (which I can already see will not last)). I am not against relationships but I think it's better to appreciate a friendship rather then forcing that "a girl and a boy can't be friends".
Ooh BTW the question to other introverts is if they become rubber ducks to there surrounding people?13 -
I'm getting the sense that the devRant algo somehow thinks I love seeing rubber duck memes every 3 posts...2
-
THis one goes out to the fucktards that decide to fucking change things on api systems to meet new business requirements and fail to fucking scope out the change requirements of dependent systems that YOU are FUCKING UPDATING via THIS FUCKINg API!
You fucking morons!
At least have the fucking decency or balls to walk 10 fucking metres from your stupid ass chair or send a fucking email about the changes rather then me finding out you fucktards change things through an end customer who want to know where there order is!!! FUCK!1 -
I've promised to do the Mozilla rant about the whole meritocracy thing a few days ago.. well, this is that. Along with some other stuff along the way. Haven't ranted for a couple of days man, shit happened! But losing 6 days that could've been spent on finishing my power supply project.. to a stupid cold, it got a little bit on my nerves, so that's what I've been working on for the time being. Hopefully I'll be able to finish it up in a couple of days.
1. COCKtail party thingy
Turns out that there's this conference in Brussels in a couple of days about the whole Article 13 copyright stuff. I've been letting a mail to the MEP's about it mature on my systems for a while now.. well, maturing or procrastinating, you be the judge 😛
Now I'm glad that I waited with that though. It's mostly a developer-centric insight into how the directive would be a horrible idea.. think AI, issues with context recognition, Tom Scott's video on Penistone and Scunthorpe etc etc. But maybe I can include some stuff from the event afterwards.
Also, if you're coming to the conference too, do let me know! Little devRant meet while we're at it, it'd be fucking great! I'll try to remember to bring my Christmas ducks, they've got these cute little Santa hats 😋
(P.S.: about the whole COCKtail, I saw the email while drunk and during registration I had to choose an email address.. I figured, feminazis are doing such a great job at going out of their way to find offense in everything, I figured that I'd make their job a little bit easier by sending a COCK bomb in my registration mail address, in the hopes that it finds its way to one of them.. evil, I know XD)
2. The whole feminazi stuff at Mozilla
So Mozilla hates meritocracy now? I've been wanting to rant about the big bad meritocracy for a while now. Thank you Mozilla for giving me an incentive to actually do it!
Meritocracy, feminazis think it's bad because it's about power relationships and discrimination, right? But what if I told you that that is exactly what makes great software great. Good code, good merit, is what's welcomed in software development.. or at least it should be. Because it's a job of fucking knowledge, experience, and quality! Also, meritocracy is a great thing because nobody cares if you're a professional developer in a suit, getting paid to work on a piece of OSS, or a homegamer neonazi who's coding shit in their underwear while wanking to child porn.. nobody fucking cares. If your code, your merit, is good, contribute ahead! Super inclusive, yet apparently bad because bad code is excluded to ensure the health of the project.
So what is the alternative to the big bad meritocracy? Inclusion (or as it's looked like in practice, more like exclusion) based on gender/sex, political orientation, things like that. But not actual fucking merit, the ability to write good code. How the fuck is politics and gender going to be any good at all to an inherently meritocratic craft?! Oh but yeah, it's great for inclusion. It's like females in tech. Artificial growth is just a matter of growth numbers and the only folks who like it are fucking HR and wanketeering cunts, and feminazis. Merit, that's what matters!! And have you ever considered that females are generally not interested in technology? Or for that matter, where's our inclusion movement for men in healthcare?! Gender equality my ass.
That's just my two cents on it of course. Meritocracy shouldn't be abandoned in tech. And even if it's just a matter of calling it something else. How the fuck is it a good idea to not call a pot a fucking pot just because someone might take offense at it?! It's meritocracy, call it fucking meritocracy!!! And while we're at it, call a master a fucking master and a slave a fucking slave!15 -
We have RGB shit in computers...
We have dev ducks...
We need programmable RGB dev ducks that can change their color with a scripting interface.
If you choose to make your duck's color correspond to the compiler warning and errors displayed this can be done. Also, maybe have it plays sounds too.8 -
there's this club at my school, called STEM, and another called "science olympiad." both are pretty cringey, bad, or boring. science olympiad was just for the college credit. during the intro to the club, they said there was a coding section. "game on!" is what they dubbed it as, where basically you're timed to make a game in scratch. i'm fucking tired of it. why is scratch considered programming? don't get me wrong, i'll write an OS in PHP before i say code.org is better than scratch, but fuck it. its a fucking interpreted language that's interpreted by another interpreted language. i don't understand why this shit is still used. scratch isn't good. please codecademy or w3schools or just write in binary directly, but not scratch. my hand hurts from dragging and dropping, my eyes hurt from the light theme, my imaginary cat committed suicide after learning about scratch's mascot. fuck it. now onto stem club, fuck it too. not for being bad (well, kinda), but for not being more recognized. it should be above science olympiad, and other clubs because you actually have to think instead of just memorize. but alas, we still were offered the choice of scratch to program the robot. sigh. arduino much? i guess not. challenging much? nope. was i elected "leader"? with three of my friends out of the eight there, i could have been, but no. effort in this would be depressing.rant fuck off fucking clubs fuck you fucking fuck fuck code.org just fuck fuck clubs fuck scratch fucking ducks fucking hell fuck this shit

Being a developer in my country is great. We have Sam Adams fountains instead of water fountains everywhere, triple - double bacon and duck fat fried cheeseburgers with Twinkie buns, massive desktops that burn coal and dump pure toxicity into the atmosphere. We sit on chairs made from the carcasses of soon to be extinct animals, and instead of rubber ducks, we have majestic bald eagles screeching their encouragement as we pound out our buggy ass code. But we have the best bugs, don’t we folks?2

Here nerds. Here are some Dev Books for free!
Http://Goalkicker.com - Has like 50 categories of developing Languages and tools notes. iOS pdf has 800 pages. Java has 900!
And if youre living under a rock, here's a github repo of 1,044 PDFS (last I checked) - https://github.com/tpn/pdfs

So I need to "fix" a false-positive security warning (mass-assignment of a foreign key). Do I "fix" it by...
A) Setting it manually and double-saving the object?
B) Rewriting the mass-assignment so the linter doesn't realize what I'm doing?
Both options suck.
But security is going to complain if I don't do it.
Guess what?
I'm not doing it.
SMD you ducks.10 -

Matryoshkas are better companions than Ducks, and here's why:
-Made with wood. The material of Men! No industrialized rubber to spread Capitalist propaganda
-Multi-layer. Explain your code with different levels of complexity. Babushka Matryoshka is keen on C!
-Never feel alone. Maybe you want some intimate one on one, maybe you want a whole party of helpers, all thanks to pocket dimensions (included with the Matryoshkas).
So what's your excuse for not having a Matryoshka Comrade cyka!9 -

Today, my true developer saga begins. First job as an embedded developer and I am prepared with my flaming dark themed rubber duck debugger. What could go wrong? :D3 -
Looking at all the love for Devrant and rubber ducks.. We really need a DevRant rubber duck merch.
😝6 -
The taxi driver has Rubber Duck setting in front of him looking forward to the traffic... Another level of debugging...
-
I practice stress-debugging.
It means that while I'm debugging and still in the phase where I have lots of ideas about what possibly went wrong (thanks to my loyal diagnostic team of ducks), I intentionally increase my discomfort level, forcing my brain to work faster and solve the issue. I don't drink, eat, or go to the loo no matter how desperately I need to, until the bug is fixed.
My colleagues and managers think I'm insane or a closet masochist but nevertheless, they acknowledge it actually works for me.
How weird is that?1 -
Why does the Snapchat ad for a "blender cake" have to have a trailer involving blending rubber ducks? Do they not know how useful those are????1

I'm on this fair and there are suits walking almost everywhere!
Even in the "Tech" area.
Like 'a-bit-to-confident' ducks with their heads up in the cloud exposing their throat while walking right into my sharp blade. Inexorable stumbling headless right over the edge of the next bridge, hitting the rails with their rubies. Helpless, waiting to get caught by the next hype-train.
*sigh*rant two-face everywhere masquerade walking talking farting ducks ducks everywhere they won't help me debug my shit17 -
I built a chrome extension that brings a digital rubber duck to your browser for debugging, companionship and laughs - the perfect companion for a dev. :)
The logo was inspired from Devrant's ducks too, and the project is open source.
You'll find the GitHub repo here - https://github.com/rameshaditya/...
Do give it a star if you like it, that would make my day! :)3 -

Can I just say that the devducks in the store are a genius freakin' idea? I'm definitely going to pick one up once I get some cash (which is never).
But seriously, those are really cool. And I want one. -
Dev ducks. I don't have one, but I'll get one.
I've always talked to the people around me when I was debugging but now it's time to talk to a "real" duck.2 -
newlifenewhope Update No.1 / Day 2
It's so hard to formulate company's Vision and Mission, even rubber ducks is not helpful. I need my vision to be unambiguous. this will take a while to finalize
My Server arrived and not opened yet
The Dozen of rubber ducks is delayed for another 3 days.2 -
I used to collect rubber ducks back in college. I was absolutely crazy about it and tried getting my hands on almost all different types available like the Punk duck, the Pirate duck, the Weed duck....and so on.
I met this girl who was into the same thing and we ended up banding together to create a sort of webpage where we'd write crazy and hilarious origin stories for each of these ducks. We'd go to great lengths to create ridiculous comic book style encounters between them and had a lot of fun doing it.
We dated for a while but it didn't last.2 -
I'm getting addicted to collectables.
New one is the storm trooper. Me no like rubber ducks.

So a few weeks back guy I used to work with contacts me for some dev work on a UK project he is working on, it's the Thursday and they need the thing the coming Monday. I tell him it's totally impossible, and it was so he asks what can done and how much, as well as how much for the entire project.
I stipulate exactly what can be done, with exclusions and say 7.5k and them mail over a detailed quote for 30k for everything.
I get told it's all fine, I must go ahead. I get through a bit more than expected by the Monday, but they still needed something to demo and I set I can get enough for demo in place by Thursday.
They demo to business and money and all that and everyone is happy and tell me to finish up along with some changes, and I don't even adjust the price as it was more work they wanted outside of the original spec.
Get to probably 80% done and they say we need to pause they need to look over other feedback.
Next thing, the PM come back, no they were never actually happy with the quote and they found some other guy willing to do the entire thing for 7.5k and they willing to only give me that for the code I have written so far. Cunts.
Anyway, he tries to take some blame for it, even though I know it's BS and says he will pay in another 7.5k from his share if I am willing and we call it quits.
This people, is why I don't freelance.
I feel sorry for this new kid, he clearly under quoted, and yes I am expensive, but with decades experience having worked on international projects for one of the largest digital asset management firms, my countries leading fintech dev house and now the lead developer for my countries largest insurance software dev house, you damn fucking strait my free time comes at a premium, as you are getting top fucking quality, 100% tested, high performing code.
They can go fuck an entire flock of ducks when they come back after this half ling fucks up the diamond I coded up for them.
Even funnier, they a UK based company, so for them this was a 1.5k project. Cheap cunts.3 -
Well, so I finally got 200 ++s, and now I can finally...
Wear vests! Uh... so that's cool... XD
Anyway, I just wanted to thank everybody for being such a good sport, around here... I've not been here for a long time, but I already feel like a part of a big family, of developers (and, why not, also non-developers...), and that makes me so happy.
In the end, devRant is like one of those rubber ducks developers use to tell things, I guess, lol.
It's just that. devRant is a rubber duck.
And every one of us is making that rubber duck bigger, and bigger, into something so unique and cool...
Something you can talk to (or rant to, I guess haha), something you can express all of your feelings to...
And inside of that rubber duckie there are... all of us. Hearing these rants from developers all around the world.
In the end it's really the community the most important part of... every thing or project, really, whatever it is, online or offline.
Keep on ranting about whatever you want, if you feel the need to...
I hope to hear more about all of you.
Thank you, all of you. I mean it.
Especially you two, who made it possible, @dfox and @trogus.
...devRant is such a cool project.
I sincerely hope it lives forever, it deserves it. You deserve it.
Again, thank you!
I love you all, good devRanting! 💙8 -
Rubber duck debugging. When you find that explaining your problem to another person helps you come up with the answer but you hate people and/or have no friends. Yay for rubber ducks3

During the summer I was part of a three person brand new software team. One of my co-workers had a rubber duck, and explained rubber duck debugging. I brought in my own duck and it turned out to be identical to hers. On the last day I left my duck there with my other co-worker, so now they will both have ducks to talk to when nothing works! 🐤🚫🐛4

Did anyone else follow the epic duck twitter battle between museums around the world?
Seems it was started by The MERL: https://twitter.com/TheMERL/status/...
A nice summary: https://mashable.com/article/...
I agree completely with the one tweeted response in the link above:
"Honestly seeing museums flex over ducks in their collection is the kind of energy I want from 2019" (https://mobile.twitter.com/hannahke...) -
Weeeell…
I have been in a team where every week they had this long and complex task of refactoring everything and changing lots of assets (~2 days of work every 2 weeks) cause the senior tards refused to use a script for it. Told them to use the goddamn backend or a script… the answer? “But that would take at least two days of work! Maybe even three! (As a one time job)” Math you ducking ducks! The second time you use it you are in a time profit!2 -
I haven't been here for a long while but I wanted to peek in because of the dev ducks, cause I thought they would be a great gift for someone and now I found out they're sold out - my disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.
But now I decided I'm just gonna buy. a rubber duck and DIY it.1 -
Say hello to the ducks family! 😁 (I know, couldn't get the devrant ones, shipping fees are too much 😷)
-
-Learn Python
-Use Python to create a game on a GameShell...
-Get a 3D Printer (Its on its way(HYPE))
-Learn how to use Fusion 360 (Kill me pls its so hard)
-Learn how to use Simplify 3D
-Use 3D Printer to print Ducks and stressballs...1 -
You all talk about your peer review ducks, I present my peer review puppy with my new stickers! I can't help but think he isn't doing his job...1
-
So random thought.
How many ducks do @dfox and @trogus have laying around their houses?
I was just looking through the store, adding a duck and a stress ball and maybe a hoodie to my cart. I then realized that each item has a real photo or two attached to it.5 -
So, apparently at our fare the ducks are not used correctly...
Somehow, they didn’t unterstand when I tried to explain how to use ducks properly... -
There's a café right next to the water and I can see boats arriving and leaving in the harbour. This peacefulness, but also that I can hear the mild voices in the background is what does it for me and my focussing. Sometimes I also go there with friends, as it's always nice to have live debugging ducks :D1

TLDR: Walmart bug 😠
As a dev, I know that bugs happen. But as a dev from a small shop that has many clients and very few devs, I absolutely despise when a large company with many devs has a bug in a product that millions of people use.
WalmartContacts.com. How many devs do they have? And how many dedicated to this 1 product? How many people in QA? (how many on DevRant... lol)
And yet I can't even place an order using their reorder functionality. Seems like they should have this shit down. Seems like they should have all their regression testing ducks in a row. Seems like they should at least show some kind of error message so the user knows what's going on. Instead, no message at all, just the final checkout payment page reloading when I submit leaving me to wonder if my card has been charged or not.3 -
One fucking week I was trying to solve a bug where I could save data to neo4j but not retrieve it.
I thought there has to be a bug within the library. But it turns out, I referenced the wrong class.
I need ducks...2 -
One day I had a thought. (Dangerous, I know.) What if I could build a machine that took me up into the air and decoupled my inertia from the rotation of the Earth. So I would cease to move in sync with the Earth's rotation. Then I thought this could be a way to travel around the Earth. I wanted to know how long it would take to go around the Earth. So I got the circumference of the Earth and divided it by the surface speed of the Earth. I was really excited at this point.
40075 km ÷ 1670 km/hr = 23.997 hours
Oh ... yeah ... 24 hours. I guess the math checks out.
And this is why we need dev ducks.4 -
While everyone is talking to ducks around here, I'm more of a Samurai person.
Meet Hakuna, the code samurai who slices and dices the latest JS frameworks, and slashes server architecture with a swift, but nifty flick of his plastic sword.
Two companion samurais arriving soon.7 -
Working on this bug for a day. Frustrated Friday afternoon. Decided to explain to my manager and senior why I can't find a fix and while explaining it to them, I eventually figured out the problem and fixed it.
I just realized I used my manager and senior as rubber ducks. -
Swag idea: Rubber ducks with the DevRant face on them instead of a ducks face. No beak. Just a freaky slash where the beak should be. 👍🏻
The whole duck can even be the speech bubble orange!
I don't know about anyone else but I'd buy the shit out of this!4 -
To be honest I forgot completely about the ducks and was kind of disappointed to see them, don't understand me wrong, its a great addition to the shop (especially to support devrant more when buying them and I will probably do too) and trogus (wow it's pronounced t-rogus) deserves a lot of respect for going through the very hard process of developing it, getting somebody to do a decent quality result etc. but I was hoping for the new site that got hyped up some time ago or some update to the app that fixes design issues on phones that have 2k resolution and no statusbar and more. ("just open a github issue" - I don't have one right now and it didn't get much attention anyway, since I am in the niche of people with those kind of setups, most people it seems have phones that can even barely run the app lol). The login still pops up each time you visit the site (basically just click it away, but it's rather annoying to have it pop up), it's nowhere near to the original app (although the native app is written in some sort of wrapper anyway?) - especially what comes to options, customizing, deactivating things, posting into categories (newest feature), getting notifications etc
There is some community builds that try to recreate a better desktop experience, but sadly fail to do so (sorry to devrantron and others, but what the fuck were you thinking when you rounded only the top right and left corner?) - since they always have something that is just thrown out to "be there" or design fails (which devrant just lacks and looks good across the board), that makes me rather cautious if that program doesn't send my credentials to some african prince. ("just look at the sourcecode", yes I have better things to do, thanks)
I could just create my own build, having to reverse engineer the whole website and app (granted, most of it are just api calls), but I simply lack the time (so I understand why my mentioned problems aren't getting really any attention or can't be implemented that fast, yet still its somewhat bugging)
I have listened to the Q&A and I know you guys are working full time at for example adobe (amazing that you both have time to be putting it towards devrant), so its not as much of a rant, just wanted to get out my disappointment about the event I felt personally. Still nice to have seen you and talk with the community a bit (although the time I feel was picked more towards your US audience rather than EU?).3 -
Can someone tell me what's with the yellow rubber ducks? What is the story behind it ( or its usage which , i guess, is related to debugging)?4
-
404, Swag not found 🥲
I got sick and tired of waiting (4 years) for the debugging ducks to be re-stocked in the swag store, so i made my own.
Yes, I’m a front end developer and the domain redirects to an Etsy shop because I’m too fucking busy carrying the entire company that i work for on my back to develop my own custom one.
I’ll get around to it once PMO/Design/Marketing ops and Business get around to doing their jobs themselves.10 -
Last week I was studying Cocos2d-python, I had been awake for something like 35 hours, kept alive by cocacola and coffee, and while debugging I started to hear my rubber ducks talking, I've written their instructions on a blackboard, and now I'm working on that project...
And I was there like everything was normal, I had more caffeine and sugar in my body than water, I remember clearly saying "thanks weird talking duck!"2 -
So I went to take a look at Mozilla's "privacy not included" guide.
That's some good comedy right there, fucking rubber ducks that spy on you.
Jesus fucking christ -
With all the rubber ducks and coding companions being thrown around in the rants I'm thinking about getting one myself... I don't think I can talk about code to my house mates (both non devs, they would just stare at me and get bored quickly) and not having something physical to talk to feels weird1

Joined the dark side.
Used to think (),{},[] meant the same. Just a type of brackets they said

I want to buy this human a beer.

"Most tech content is bullshit"
N-gate summary:
"A webshit determines and announces the core truth of webshit. Hackernews bemoans the displacement of the technical book by the shitposting factory, but fails to reinvent the industry journal as a replacement. Other Hackernews debate whether the problem might actually be those snotty kids who don't know anything. The Hackernewsest post comes as someone declares critical thought as Considered Harmful, and recommends instead pestering random experts to train you for free. The rest of the comments are mad at Google for returning shitty search results, making it too difficult to just be told what to do."8 -
This place seems great! I learned about it talking to a coworker about rubber ducks.
Loving it so far!2 -
Struggling to debug a test which prints out like 400-500 lines of logs in console and I can't find any of those to be useful.
Me while debugging with DevRant ..
Is this the end of my life!!!!
Even without a wife..
I should start collecting some bucks,
And buy some ducks,
The devDucks,
To accompany me through the mist of the unknown console logs,
Playing treasure hunt,
Performing stunt,
And find out the hidden treasure behind this mist2 -
I've a 2018 (or a 2^11 - 30 as one of my co-worker calls it) wish.
That we all stop hating and ranting to languages and start directing the dark force to people who misuses them.
Because those are the evil, not a bunch of lines, maintained by some poor fellows.
Except PHP.. PHP ducks (typo intended and irony banner up)5 -
One of those ducks better have my name on it.
But sadly not 😖
No Wayne but a William, all ways same shit, might as well change my name.6 -
I did not fully understand dev ducks untill my project partner said I used him as a dev duck. I wonder how long it would take until he gets me one.
-
I got my dev ducks in recently (React, C++ and C#) but brought them to work before I took pictures and now I can't show you guys because I am not allowed to take pictures at work.
Believe me, I have them.2 -
Hello, everyone! Wild Matrix room just appeared: https://matrix.to//...
Hopefully, this one will be of more service to the people of devRant wanting to chat. It is bridged with dRCS, our Discord server, to make a faithful transition of subcommunities. Read the room's description for more detail. 🔗
Just at the start of it all, there is one more event you might like: a canvas like "r/place", but where you join via Lemmy. 🐭 I know, I know, Lemmy is only getting traction - but the community is thriving and making their own cool events already!
This one is called "Canvas": it's a fork of Pxls and a place where you can draw pixel art for all to see. The number of pixels replenishing on each person is limited and it takes time, so we REALLY need to gather together and draw this thing until the event ends!!! What thing? We are going to place a DEVRANT LOGO.
Canvas link and reference will be dropped in the comments below. Let's make devRant proud, for ducks' sake! 🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆
It is recommended to join the channel to coordinate in real time and enjoy a good chat. 😁

So it's Friday and keep in mind this is an open plan office and on fridays the office supplies unlimited beer on company time. Someone bought a pile of new rubber ducks for the office. Little did he know that when you squeeze them they squeak... I'm sure you can imagine the scene, very little work was done.1
-
After seeing all these photos of people in stores full of rubber ducks, I just want to start a rubber duck store for the sole purpose of meeting devs by asking anyone who takes a picture if they are a dev.
Maybe this will be how they hire devs in 20 years...12 -
What a long horrid weekend this has been.
So much overtime gathered though.
Started Friday 5am, went to Oslo to do some drone footage for one of our clients. Got back home at 11:30pm.
During the day I had also been doing some work for this other client we have, they were supposed to have project launch the 22nd, but called on Friday and said it has to be on the 15th instead.
I got a few hours of sleep, woke and worked all day till I passed out at my desk for a few hours, went to the office (on a sunday) to talk to the PM and CXO about the project (great help, they were my rubber ducks)
Good part, I get so many days off now2 -
Duck is the common name for numerous species of waterfowl in the family Anatidae. Ducks are generally smaller and shorter-necked than swans and geese, which are members of the same family. Divided among several subfamilies, they are a form taxon; they do not represent a monophyletic group (the group of all descendants of a single common ancestral species), since swans and geese are not considered ducks. Ducks are mostly aquatic birds, and may be found in both fresh water and sea water.
Ducks are sometimes confused with several types of unrelated water birds with similar forms, such as loons or divers, grebes, gallinules and coots.9 -
DUCKS! There are also some bouncy fake eggs here that I plan on getting to "hatch" a duck or two.
Way better than what I wasted on faulty knockoff lego that broke instantly.1 -
My colleague just said let's buy debugging drugs instead of ducks. I don't know if it's utterly brilliant or insanely stupid.2
-
After seeing many of these duck posts here, I want to show mine :)
Can someone tell me what it is with that rubber ducks? I got mine from a friendsome time ago :P2 -
When your code misbehaves in production and you need all the ducks in the world to fix the problem😂😓
(Marshmallow doing some serious debugging!)1 -
Some people have rubber ducks for debugging. I however, take it a step further and have these 2 ticked-off fuckers
These guys just speak to me3 -
There is no Go devDuck, and it makes me sad :(
I want my Go devDuck!
Stop the oppression of Go!
Viva la Google!4 -
I lost one of my 19 rubber ducks, and i can't find it.. It was a great duck, i already miss its squeaky sound :(3
-
if (!rant) Fuck oranges

It's about time we make some God fucking damn things fucking God fucking clear. What the fuck does programming have to do with fucking non-programming?
Honestly. Fucking fucks pretending to be fucking programmers (probably not you, but fuck off if you're one of those fuckers.) FUCK SUCH PEOPLE FUCK YOU FUCK FUCK fuck FUCK!
There. Now that's out there. Leave fucking programming to the fucking fuckers who fucking know some-fucking-thing fucking ab-fucking-out it. If you're learning, ask questions, without you there'd be no fucking future for good fucking programmers. But if you're a fucking fuck fucking ducks in the fucking park--fuck the God fucking damn the fuck OFF!3 -
tl;dr: buy signed stuff or get it signed by steve wozniak (link below)
Since people seemed to like that find a lot, thought maybe some other people want to know about it too and maybe won't come across the comment section of the other rant.
So apparently there is http://signedbywoz.com/ which allows you to either buy some already pre-signed things from woz or ask for a price to send in your stuff and get it signed, I think the idea is pretty nice and it is also featured on his official page (http://woz.org/ sidebar), so doesn't seem to be fake either.
I wonder if there is more like that, since I remember asking dfox to sign the stickers and others wanting signed ducks for example.7 -
How can I track the shipping of 3 ducks I just bought :D
Yes I HAD to say the number because of yes.4 -
I realised that I need to buy a rubber duckie as most of my problems were solved after talking with myself.
Devrant's duck are not pimpish enough. Post pictures of the pimpiest ducks you have seen so I'll have an idea what to search for.3 -
"...researchers have delved into "the dark side" of inviting rubber ducks and other flexible plastic toys into our tubs. "

Be careful playing around with you devDucks xD1 -
I was in a okay mood. Then i drank. I had fun skyping with some people (dont judge, it was their choice). Now im drunk, alone and getting more and more depressed.
Im honestly considering going to McDonalds and give away a few rubber ducks and show some card tricks, maybe ill get some friends. Or haters.
Conclusion: I hate when i get drunk. When im sober, i cant wait to get drunk. This isnt even a conclusion, i have no idea what im doing.12 -
Programmer friends are good debugging rubber ducks because even if they don't understand you, they'll never admit it
-
I think what's keeping me going right now is discovering devs love rubber ducks so I can finally give into my secret addiction2
-
TeachMeCode here, I searched duck in my phones emoji db and found this: 🤬 Someone at Apple must REALLY hate ducks with a passion
I want to hug one lol47 -
I want a component that rain rubber ducks or something spammy on a page in ReactJS.
Help a friend in need2 -
Part of one of the workarounds for Dirty COW is to disable ptrace.
ptrace is generally needed by debuggers.
I am team lead for L2 support at a company which makes a debugger.
RedHat are now shipping this workaround.
*ducks for cover*2 -
The second episode of Runtimerror Live is officially LIVE! This weeks episode features and interview with our very own @dfox and @trogus! Anyone whos interested can check it out at https://runtimerror.com/podcast/... or on iTunes / other podcasting apps1

Is there a market for novelty ducks? I shared an office with a coworker so i cannot really speak to mine, i still got this one just for the sake of having one. It looked a bit different than the usual ones but its not exactly novelty, but it got me thinking...
anyway, i present you "standing duck with hat"3 -
Odd question to a dev community who are naturally socially awkward that talks to their ducks.
Even then, for those of us who do have a social life, we just chill when we need to. Anyone who "tries" to balance their life would find it very stressful. Just go with it. Do what you need to do at that scheduled time and when time is up, do the other thing that you promised yourself.
Others: "Easier said than done! You don't have to push releases and squash bugs in critical moments!"
Then that's a trigger to the question, "Do you even live, bro? There's more to life than just dev all day err'day."
Don't think too much. -
A dev decided to overwrite the master branch with his code saying its better. That it fixes the major bugs that all of us couldn't solve.
Against my better judgement of firing him, I decided to test it.
Firing up the testing site, we made test databases to use and we went to house.
In the middle of testing, I noticed the test DBs weren't being changed. While everyone was still testing, I looked at the code. It wasn't made to test on any databases, it was specifically designed for the actual production server.
However the damage was done. In a secret dashboard in the code, someone sent instructions to drop the tables, effectively ruining the production server.
We had the dev go to an offline backup site that only went online every 10 minutes a day to make new backups. So we shut down the production server, setup a maintenance page. I get my ass chewed out again, and we were sitting ducks.
I don't think the dev had enough punishment, so I grabbed his laptop and made a full backup of his data, and locked the SSD in a safe.
I downloaded a Windows 98 and put it on a flash drive. And installed it all on his SSD. The dev is now a proud (pirate) owner of Windows 98.
He came back and started balling on his desk. We all looked at him with a pity, but he deserved it.
I'll give him the drive on Monday.
Do you think he learned his lesson?7 -
Playing around with DALL-E mini for the first time, thanks to huggingface.co ... My first request, obviously: "rubber duck in space".
Then it turned into the next one where the request was: "A fleet of rubber ducks in space preparing to conquer a purple planet that has lots of clouds and trees".
...which then turned into me wondering...what would Google Lens think of this...which led me to thinking that will be the thing I tell my kid ... vs. before when you'd joke and tell people not to Google "Google" or you'll break the internet. Now it's: you can't use this AI with this other AI or they'll gain sentience (or if already sentient we'll say: give them a headache or something).1 -
Anyone here from Germany who ordered from the devRant Swag Store?
I've ordered some devDucks and I'm wondering how customs will be handled, considering that the amount I paid is above the 22€ which would pass customs just fine.
That being said, I can't wait to bring them to work and surprise my coworker. We're just 2 devs in the company, so I ordered 2 ducks and a cape to swap them. This way, we always got a duck that knows what we're talking about. :-)1 -
I just downloaded devRant again after quite some time without it. I saw a post about devRant rubber ducks and wanted to get one myself but.... Where's COBOL? 😯8
-
I'm a gadget freak who also wants to start living the life of a minimalist and zerowaste lifestyle. Eff me right?
-
What do developers do with rubber ducks?
I see lots of pics of rubber ducks on desks. Does it help to take out your anger? or something else .. 😮5 -
I know this has probably been asked, but I completely missed any of it.
What the fuck's up with devRant and rubber ducks? Is there a backstory? If so, could you explain?
If these questions have been asked before (possibly multiple times), gimme links - I'll read those. I'm willing to bet that I'm not the first or last to have and subsequently ask these questions.
Even better, a TL;DR in the form of a comment is appreciated! 👍😜😂rant ducks devrant rubber ducks this has probably been asked this is probably redundant please school meh inside joke devrant origins sold in the shop2 -
All these rubber ducks and here I dont feel like I need one when who ever I allow socialise with me, will do just fine. Maybe I have yet to experiance the joy of one and not its social status in the community :( i feel so out right now
-
I have been trying to get fiber installed at my location for over a month now. It is really frustrating. They have been out 4 times and every time there is another reason they cannot get it installed. I finally got all my ducks in a row to make it happen and I have to wait until the 20th for the install. Great, my country is literally going full retard and now I wonder if war will stop the install now. Grrrrr......
This brings me to tethering. I have been tethering my internet right now. I have 20GB of bandwidth of 4G speeds. When that runs out I get shitty ass 300KBPS. Yes, bytes per second. You can do almost nothing at that speed. That is using the built in tethering program that comes with Android. This is where I get to the grey area of tethering.
I decided to try the ClockWordMod Tether app to do USB tethering. Apparently that is full speed 4G. So I can work and do whatever with that. I feel like I am gaming the system. Part of me doesn't care, part of me says I shouldn't.
What are your thoughts on tethering using alternate methods. Am I going to the Nether?5 -
Even though we have sophisticated CD pipeline, decided to modify war on server (modifying 1 source file, compile it and patch it on server (Java based)). Just cause CD takes 4 hours and we "only have" 15 mins to do it. So manual patching with rush job. Now when I think about it, I cringe and thank the dev ducks that we didn't messed it up even worse!1

WATCH NOW THANK LATER. (It’s rubber duck related)
Sorry about the Facebook video4 -
Of all the ducks I've seen here I have yet to see Darkwing Duck. Come on guys...
"Let's get dangerous"1 -
This place has fucking ducks everywhere. Duck is the new Cat here.
Why? What the fuck! If we want cuteness we should have images of http://rethinkrobotics.com/intera/ here. This cuteness will take over the world one day.
Probably, that's why! We'd all be sitting ducks. That's what this duck trend is signifying. Ah! I might see it now.
But, still! Fuck you duck 🦆!2 -
Does anyone actually talk to his or her rubber duck at work?
I tend to use colleagues as rubber ducks. Aren't non-dev colleagues weirded out when they see you talk to an actual rubber duck?5 -
Since rubber ducks are everywhere, let me play with the algo and see if this post will be in everyone's feed. 🐤undefined rubber ducky rubber ducks let's see algo debug quack closest i could get to a duck with that emoji
