*Me Coding with a laptop and desktop when friends enter *
Friends : u r a coder right? Hack something in front of me.
Me : *sick of explaining ppl*
*SSHs into lap from desktop and shuts it down*
See. I hacked my lap
Friends : whoa! Cool man8 -
Me: Wanna see this website I built this weekend?
Friend: Yeah, sure.
Me: I connected a bunch of APIs so you can snap a photo of yourself and get a recommended song based on your facial expression. Pretty cool, right?
Friend: *thinking* ... I think you should change the size of that button, and the colors are pretty bad, dude.
Every time I show my non-tech friends anything I get this kind of feedback :/19 -
How do you tell your family that you are currently developing a PornSite for a Client?
*Asking for a friend*
Note: I don't have friends40 -
Fixing family / friends technical problems, episode 2.
Problem: "I lost my iPhone, I know there's a thing that lets you find it. Can you help?"
Debugging:
Me: sure, it's called "find my iPhone"
Friend: ah yes that's it. How do I use it?
Me: I'll show you, just login here and ... oh you didn't set it up?
Friend: Probably not, I don't know much about this computer stuff.
Me: ... when you setup your phone for the first time, it's a full screen thing that says "do you want us to locate your phone if it's lost. Yes / No". It's hardly writing an encryption algorithm now is it?
Friend: no it's not, but still I just didn't know. I probably clicked no for everything.
Me: ... says here you clicked yes for iCould ... and yes for photo sync ... so you read the one about your pictures but not about lost or stolen property ... nice.
Friend: ... so you can't find it then.
Me: No, natural selection took it away from you.
Friend: oh **** off.6 -
Anyone else getting used to seeing certain usernames in devRant? We may not have "friends" like Facebook, but is still a kick ass community 😃190

This rant is devoted to my study friends. You see, I never knew what it was to not have people making fun of you/bullying you until I started my study.
Elementary school + highschool was one big mess of bullying, being made fun of and hardly having any friends.
At highschool I decided I wanted to go into IT. Especially programming. Programming in particular because when I was programming, I, for once, was the one in control. The code listened to me and for that tiny moment I was god.
Never really had much friends though and when I told my parents I wanted to do an MBO study (application development), my mother warned me that although she and my dad supported me with whatever my decision would be, MBO level studies were rough because of the general mindset/atmosphere there.
I thought fuck it, I want to do programming because that seems awesome and maybe I'll even make some friends with the same interests!
Then study arrived. Met a few guys with similar interests and we started hanging out together.
And then it came back just like before. Two guys who loved bullying and I was still a quite easy target because I couldn't stand up for myself.
But, then something happened. I liked a girl, she was in the hallway and two of the bullies (there were about 4-5 in total) got up and started fucking around with me (about her) and I just sat there, not daring to do anything with tears in my eyes.
Then two of my classmates noticed it, quickly came to my desk and started pushing the guys away with 'back the fuck off, what the fuck has he done to you?!'. Then one of those guys (now still about my best friend) came to me to see if I was alright.
We started talking. Then at some point, another bully had a go at me. This would be the final time. He was about 2 meters tall (I was about 160cm or something) and stood there in the door opening with a very nasty smile saying all nasty stuff, trying to intimidate me and probably tried to make me feel like crap again.
Nice guy on my right asked me to step to the left. Gave that guy a huge fucking foot in his chest and he smacked onto the ground. Made a gentleman's sign like 'go ahead, sir!' while gesturing towards the door.
From that moment on the bullying stopped. Throughout my study, some other bad things happened but those guys were always there for me.
Although I've lost touch with most of the guys (they're on social media, I'm not really), we still meet up once in a while and have a lot of beers while talking and laughing and thinking back to the good times we had together.
The study wasn't the best for what we were taught as in studying but it's the best choice I've ever made nonetheless.
Oh and that best friend and I still have loads of contact!13 -
And when I was busy wasting my time on my girlfriend who is my ex now, my friends were busy coding an AI chat-bot. Now, I use their chat-bot to talk to when lonely.
Moral :
Girlfriends ditch you.... code doesn't. Love code.15 -
Friend(non dev): Hey. Do you know how much it costs to maintain an app?
Me : Well that depends. What are you planning to do?
Friend: Something like Trivago. But small.
Me: That still doesn't tell me anything
Friend: Come on. Just give a number. How hard can it be?
Me: 42. *facepalm*
Friend: See wasn't that hard. Was it?
Me: *thinking* Don't correct him. Just let him be.19 -
Story time:
I was hanging around with my friend:
Me: Gosh, this waiting is killing me!
Friend: You're programmer - aren't you used to waiting?
Me: :|

me: Better check my phone for texts from friends
me: *checks phone*
me: Better get some friends

me: Better go back to terminal2 -
Friend: Hi! Can you create a car rental website for me?
Me: hmmm... yeah, we need to define some..
Friend: I will pay you in beer! 😉
Me: We need to define how you want to die.
Why some people try to ignore the fact that programming is a fucking job?7 -
Made a list of all my friends in Java.
then I run:
list.get(0);
I get: Index out of bound exception.
What is the problem, send help10 -
That time when you code up something really cool (to you, that is...) and none of your friends understand.
Me: "Look at this cool thing!"
Them: "Looks like a bunch of numbers."
Me: "But they mean foo, bar, and baz!"
Them: "Whatever."
:(3 -
Just deleted my Facebook and github account (after migrating over to bitBucket) and realised.
I had more followers on github than friends on Facebook. Feels bad man..3 -
I HATE it when I give my phone to my friends for like 2 mins and they clear my notifications and recent apps while giving back!
Why bro?12 -
6:30pm: "You programmers have no life at all. Spending the whole day infront of a computer! "
6:31pm: "Hey could you please loan me some money, I am so broke right now"
*Me singing in my head*: 🎵🎵Young, dumb and broke4 -
This might come off like i'm so full of myself, but its just true.
This probably happens to so many other girl devs as well, so this might be relatable.
Why can't guys at school, work, etc. just be friends with me? They often start liking me as more than a friend, causing me to disappoint them that I don't, and then they don't want to be friends anymore.
I get it, there aren't many developer, 'gamer', reasonably attractive girls out there, but damn it kinda sucks :/.31 -
How to be the Dev with no friends
Say:
"DevRant is shit"
"SO is shit!! "
" Quora is shit"
"I dont need Friends"
Voila: ur life is ruined now14 -
Freinds/Family: You study computer science?
Me: Yeah
Friends/Family: so you write in 1s and 0s all day? How do you do it?
Me: *Rethinking choice in friends*9 -
You know, sometimes I wish I had friends who knew how to code or new a bit about the programming world. Then I could show them my projects and they could help out of they wanted. I could also get them to properly criticize my designs and script. Instead of the ones that just scroll past your shit and say nothing at all, you know, people who would actually give a little bit of a shit. Sigh.4

To everyone in hurricane war path...
YOUR WONDERFUL STUBBORN ASSES BETTER LET ME KNOW YOU'RE OK. I'M GOING TO BE WORRIED SICK UNTIL ALL THESE FUCKING WATER TORNADOES ARE DONE.32 -
It's going to be Instagram, but better. I have lots of friends so it'll have lots of users.
Okay.... You have how many friends?2 -
I have a whatsapp group with my friends, none of which are techies. A while ago one of them was looking for a phone to buy, so he started looking at models, specs and all that, but got pretty confused and asked a pretty well-informed question to the group:
"Guys, what is that quad core thing?
And what is a RAM? Is it something like the processor of the phone or what? "
OK, pretty typical stuff up until this point. The guy knows nothing about this sort of things, I wouldn't criticize him or insult him or anything like that. No, that's not the problem. The problem is the person that responded to him. This... This melted my brain so much I will never forget:
"Don't worry about that, you only have to look at how many gigahertz does the processor run at. Don't worry about the number of cores or ram. The GHz are the result of the amount of ram and cores, so the more the gigahertz, the better the phone."
PD: "Also take a look at how many megapixels does the camera have if you want to take photos".
Some people just talk out of their ass and pretend like they're experts on any topic they've read about for 5 minutes on the Internet7 -
My relatives: "Can you fix my computer/ipad/etc..."
Me: "Sure why not. I'l take a look when I have the time"
Lesson: Don't be so arrogant.2 -
Had a couple of beers with some non-terminal friends, started talking about devRant.conf.
Started explaining why some post was funny.
Don't make that mistake, friends.5 -
There are so many awesome dev jokes and puns here, i want to share them all with my friends. But i know none of them would understand whats so hilarious about them :(4

FUCKING USELESS 'FRIENDS' WHO ONLY CALL/MESSAGE FOR HELPING THEM TO CHOOSE TO SELECT APPROPRIATE LAPTOP FOR THEIR 'PURPOSE'. IM FUCKING DONE. THIS IS the THIRD TIME IN THIS WEEK. STOP GETTING ON MY GODDAMN NERVES. VISIT AMAZON FOR FUCKS SAKE, APPLY FILTERS AND BOOYAH MAGIC. YOU GET A FUCKING VARIETY OF LAPTOPS TO CHOOSE FROM. BUT NO YOU WON'T, BECAUSE YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO FUCKING USE AMAZON.6

Why the fuck am I - who never had a girlfriend in his life - the person my friends come to to get relationship advice?
Well, I can tell them what no to do...12 -
I don't have a ton of friends, but I do have a few. None of them can code (one has tried HTML/CSS and didn't get past the fundamentals). When I make something cool, and show it off to my friends they just don't understand the struggles and triumphs that were involved in that project. As a beginner/intermediate dev, feedback is huge and no one I know in person can give it to me. There are a couple people I chat with online that help me with my projects, but that's nothing like sitting down with someone and listening to their feedback, suggestions, ect.
Why do my friends have to be so non-techy?17 -
Devs are my closest friends and I have learned so much from you all.
They ask some of the best questions, their skill set is ever evolving, they have the real problem solving mindset, they are critical towards any and everything in a good way, and so much more.
There was this thread asking what a bad Product Manager is and this answer takes the cake.
The point highlighted in red is the ultimate truth.
Devs are most innovative people of our times. Big shout-out to you all and thank you for making me who I am today :)16 -
I already wrote one rant about how my family deals with me being a developer, but this rant I wanna dedicate to people close to my family and what they actually think...
Earlier this year I ended school, so I was supposed to find a job. Well...I live in region where only small IT "companies" exist. It is really hard to find job as a developer around here. These small companies either do not want to hire anyone or they just hire people with super amazing university or just family members and friends. Anyway, I did not want to move to the capital city, so I just kept seraching...and that is how this family friends started to be fucking toxic.
While searching for job everyone just kept telling me how am I lazy as fuck and will not just go digging fucking drains or work for minimum wage to some korean shit company around here. Of course not literally, but I can see when someone starts to look at me as I am completely crazy. Our family lost many fake friends who just do not understand because of this. But it did not ended here...
When I finally found a job 1.5 month earlier, I was so happy. Job from home in relative good company. Ho Lee Fuk! Nobody believes me I am actually working. People look at me as I am a lazy fuck laying all day in bed and watching fucking TV. I am done with these dick people.
End of story.2 -
Me: I wanna talk to my friends!
Non-dev friends: hey! We're on facebook!/instagram
Dev-friends: Maybe slack? Telegram?
Others: Whatsapp! Skype!
Result: lots of social media apps and considering new friendships15 -

Hey, I had a question. How social are you all IRL?
I'll explain myself. IRL, I don't talk to anyone unless they talk to me (which I don't seek) for example. And regarding friends, I've never had more than one "buddy" each school year, unconsciously dropping them once we weren't linked by school anymore. There is only two people I have kept throughout the years and that I'd call friends, one of them is my girlfriend.
That being said, I know I'm especially asocial, but I'm curious how everyone is here :)
We often hear "Computer people don't have many friends blabla" but I'm curious about that ^^29 -
My dev mates are all gone for Xmas
Before one of them left we hugged.
He said:gonna get laid tonight, I'm going to be all out of orgasms
Me:YOU CANT SAY THAT WHILST YOUR HUGGING ANOTHER MAN!
Wtf is wrong with my friends
They like to freak me out by saying awkward things in uncomfortable situations
PS I don't hug people like ever I was trying to be nice 😕14 -
Online friends: "So what's your plan for new years?"
Me: "We will do some amazing stuff! This will be fun"
Online friends: "Great!"
*Real condition: alone, no plan, and miserable*
Who else having the same?17 -
I just started to use
"titties" for success message
and
"no titties" for error message
... I need friends... and titties obviously4 -
A good friend of mine turned 38 yesterday. It will be his last birthday. Last month was his last Christmas and New Years. He entered hospice care this month. His doctors have said he's only got a few weeks left, so he's come off the treatment for his brain tumour. His kids are old enough to understand he won't be here much longer. A bunch of us, friends from high school, flew up to see him in the fall. It's hard to believe someone our age won't be with us to see another year. It puts things in perspective.5

While I'm still struggling with Webpack and Babel. There's one light in the end of this abyss. Dear @AlexDeLarge is reaching out and helps me with all his experience. devRant, what a wonderful place.7
-
So this happened some time ago but I didn't know devRant back then.
In school we had to write some code in Java and before the lessen one of my friends said to me that he already knew Java and that it was like a very easy coding language.
Then, when we actually had to code, he was complaining that his code didn't work.
So I stopped coding, stood up and walked over to him. He had only very few lines of code and after reading the error message I told him that he was missing a semicolon in line X.
He then asked me what a semicolon was. At that moment I thought: Oh, it's just that one thing that you put after ALMOST EVERY LINE OF CODE IN JAVA. I showed him where I find it on the keyboard and then I fixed his code (it had way more errors than just a missing semicolon).
I have no problem with helping other people but if that person brags about how well they know Java and then not knowing what a semicolon was, that's just not ok.2 -
Him: Coding is completed. Just have to compile it.
You dumb fuck, go fuck yourself. Don't redefine meaning of complete. Get yourself a dictionary.1 -
!rant
> Joins voice chat with friends
> They're talking about virtual data quantities.
> One of them mentions petabyte.
> Everybody except me proceeds by making jokes about how "petabyte" sounds like dog food and other miscellaneous things.2 -
DevRant vs Facebook:
Devrant : the place where you will find intellectual friends
Facebook: the place where you will find friends who procrastinate4 -
My friends just got me the best birthday present ever. Always wanted a rubber duckie, never thought I'll have something even better, my own Tux - will call him Tuxy 😊🐧8
-
The awkward moments when you've been laughing too much from most of these rants and your non programming friends wonder what's funny about them after showing them and trying to explain but they look at you all like...
-
You’re my friends! Right?
… right? 🥺
But in all honesty, it’s this and Virtual Coffee for me. I’ve made so many friends from Virtual Coffee (https://virtualcoffee.io). ❤️11 -
That moment when your developer friends talk about some new programming language and all you can do is just nod your head because you don't have a clue.
PS. They will definitely read this rant and know the next time, I just nod my head :D1 -
I've forgotten how to make friends.
I think I've grown to the point where I can barely tolerate myself, let alone somebody else on a regular basis. Plus, being busy makes it hard to be decent to people and actually get back to their messages and calls.
Plus, I don't code anymore...
*Starts making another cocktail before the supervisor starts yelling*7 -
Warning: I code just for fun.
Today I finished a website and I asked to my friends to tell me what they think about it saying that it wasn't yet properly responsive and that could be some error, so I asked if they could use the computer to view it and all of them sent to me screenshots of the website on mobile.
I hate them.
P.S. Sorry for my english...8 -
Sitting here with my friends. They are drinking and having a blast... I am on devRant and thinking to start a new project.10
-
My internet went out the other day and I genuinely didn't know what to do with myself! Pacing around my apartment until it came back 2 hours later.
I think I need to get out more or at least get some friends but, you know... people.4 -
Hey Guys,
I just started work on a new (personal) project for my portfolio and I don't know too much about design, so I'm hoping you guys can give me some feedback.
The project is going to be an app that the user can use to create a Poule (basically something like this but smaller: https://poules.com/us).
Any feedback is greatly appreciated!
Also tell me if you'd want to use this type of app with your friends!6 -

Chilled out with one of my non-programmer friends over the weekend. We were talking about various projects I had worked on, and he became interested. He started learning js that night, and I was proud.
Cut to today, he sends me a message complaining about some of the weird syntaxes in python. Super proud moment. -
So I've realized how socially awkward I am. I've had a goal for a few weeks now to get a few new friends online a few in 2 different categories. Programming friends, and foreign language friends but it's so hard and I dont know how to initiate it on social media or on shit like discord and reddit8

Tips n' Tricks #1: how to distinguish real friends from fake ones
Answer: with a real one you don't end up talking about their last computer issues each time you interact with them1 -
Ever noticed whenever you actually need a friend, none of them can be reached?
Technology has failed me. Where is my robot companion?17 -
I got a dayjob in a company. I got an error. I cannot solve it and I am so desperate. So I go to stackoverflow, nobody answers. I post on git issue, but nobody solves the problem. So, I pay someone to solve it, like Hackhands.com to find a mentor. There is no mentor that can help. So I pay more, hired a peer, and finally a development team just to help me. They get paid only if they solved it.
But each of my folks repeat my same steps, asking on stackoverflows or github, and none of these help. So, they end up hiring their own friends and mentors. Their friends also end up paying (pay before problem solved) someone to help them.
their friends pay for friends of friends, then friends of friends of friends
And all of a sudden it becomes a giant MLM scheme.
And those people they paid for actually work for a company behind the scene which I am a founder of 😁
Multi billions startup idea, is it?4 -
Breaking news!
An anomaly in human communications was discovered!! It appears that when a person asks a tech oriented friend "can you help me with my computer?" And receives a positive response, what he actually hears is "yes, I agree to be your slave for any technical issue you have from now and until the end of time"!
Scientists are investigating...2 -
No rant here but just wanted to remind the ladies and gentlemen to take that break and spend time with your family or friends, girlfriends, boyfriends, and pets. If someone s been meaning to do it and got bogged down by work, I hope this serves as a reminder.3
-
Am I the only one that lives in fear of friends/colleagues finding out I'm on devrant?
I've already deleted a few rants in which I described something that happened between me and someone else in fear that they might find out.14 -
Switching to linux soon.. C is too limited on windows. I also need to find more programming friends :/ but I dont know how to make programming friends /:17
-
One of my ex-trainees, mid-level dev at the time of the story, from the previous job asked me and insisted to work with me and if it's possible to open a position for him at my new employer (i was a team lead). We were also somehow friends, spending a lot of time together - including our girlfriends - outside of work.
He went to the interview, passed it and he received an approx. 1500 euros salary, jumping from around 1k euros. He was very happy with it and accepted the offer.
One week before starting his new job, my manager came to me and asked: "hey what happened with X?". I was like: "what happened?". "Don't you know? He sent an SMS this morning to announce us that he doesn't want the job anymore."
I had absolutely no idea about that. The second thing that I did was to give him a call and ask him about his decision. His argue was that "my current employer made my another offer: 1550 euros". I said something like "ok, have fun".
I got back to the manager to tell him about that. He offered to make another offer of almost 2000 euros to the guy, but I refused.3 -
I knew I had found the right group of friends when one of them suggested we try SQL Injection on the instant messaging feature of the bowling alley console.
Unrelated, do people not think, "hmm, that seems like an unnecessary feature?"2 -
My non-coding friends think i am an amazing developers as i can create landing pages and small websites and they sometimes come to me with stupid ideas for websites.3
-
Friend: So, are you studying computer engineering?
Me: Yes
Friend: Woow cool, and do you make also games?
Me: Not now, there will be a separated module...
Friend: Awasome, if you will frequent that module, can you make for me an economic version of GTA but with a better interface and in little time?
Me: Fuuu...... 😑😑😑2 -
I was using chrome + Android studio simultaneously on my windows. I saw 3 episodes of 'friends' while my Gradle build finished.2
-
Me and my friends are having a all nighter coding sesh, because the presention day was near, then my friend's mom ordered some pizza. We had set a rule where, everytime someone finish a functionality/module, that someone can get one pizza. I can totally say it was a productive night, and the presentation went unexpectedly well.1
-
Me: I hate Windows/PHP/Gradle builds/etc
Other devRanters: Did we just became friends?
Me: friends is undefined. Please go to StackOverflow for undefined error.
*I'm still socially awkward* -
I actually enjoy helping out my non-IT friends with IT related problems from time to time. I feel useful when I do so :/3

C++ tough me that having 2 or 3 friends is ok in some situations, but its best to avoid them when possible.
Also, you cannot have friends outside of class.4 -
Drinking alcohol is soo good for my social life because my autopilot is far better with people.
Somehow people can actually really get to know and like me then.
Will this ever change for normal me (22 yo) or should I just keep going out?12 -
This is why you should NEVER do tech favours for friends...
As a Christmas present I setup a WiFi router for a friend (Natted to the ip it acquires through DHCP). Since then I have had numerous messages from her because her brothers are blaming the WiFi for any internet issue they have.
I told her they need to check their cables since they looked quite dodgy when I installed the router.
Today they discovered they have a termite infestation. Her father is losing his shit with her and wants her to remove the router because he is adamant that the WiFi attracted the termites and they would not have an infestation without it.
FML... I just can't.... any fucking issue in that house is going to be blamed on the WiFi router as long as it exists.4 -
This was a much needed vacation.
Was working non stop for last 6 moth. Went to my native place, enjoyed time with my parents and frienss.4 -

Met up with a good friend today we go off roaring all the time since we both own hooked up Jeep wranglers. Well we got together and after a fun day of crawling (no coding 😞) lol, We went to eat and I pulled up devRant and kind of mentioned how much I loved this little app and stuff and why it was about. Well turns out that I’ve been friends with this guy for sometime and we never talked profession. This guy is the Vice President to a large scale software development company here in my state!
I was dumbfounded ! Lol all this time this dude has been in the same field and I had no clue.
(I don’t get out much) 😅8 -
Damn, help me guys. Tomorrow I'm invited to a "friends" party.
Don't want to go, but have to. I hate partys. I hate all this shit, alcohol, drunk people. Have to stay there for at least 6h, until 1am or so. I hate drinking alcohol, doing stupid alcohol drinking games.
And I don't like this friend. I don't have much contact with him in the last few months. I thought he would understand that I don't like him. But no - he never lets me alone. Don't want this.
Let me fucking code - I want to have my free time, let me alone. Don't need that friends. The school mates on my apprenticeship are good enough for me, they are friendly, thinking the same way and don't drink alcohol all the time.
I hate this. Damn. Hopefully I will survive this fucking party. Maybe I can browse devRant half time of the party.
Am I the only one who doesn't need all that shit? Partys, alcohol, social interaction all the time?19 -
Okay so I jumped on this app because I would ideally want to make friends interested in the stuff I am.
Using this app has really made me realise how much of a noob I am though. I feel like I'm doomed to never find the kinda people I wanna know.4 -

"Hm, must have changed the thumbnail..."
*Clicks first lecture and is greeted with "Hello friends!"*
Yep, got the wrong fucking course didn't I ;-;
Here hoping Udemy may offer a refund seeing as I hadn't started the course till now... Fuck1 -

(not really dev related, but a rant nonetheless)
I just got a new 3D printer, and all of a sudden, people are giving me print requests. I don't think that they realize that I don't just tell the printer that I want whatever, but that I have to either find the model online or design it myself.
Also, I have more friends now. Yay?5 -

Trying to make friends is hard.
Anyone else here that does c#? It would be great with some people to cooperate with. I got some projects currently going. (On my github. Link can be found in my bio)
Tell me i you’re interested :)19 -
Has anyone else built any websites or apps for friends or family for free? Is it just me, or is free work always the least appreciated? The demands are also unrealistic. Meanwhile my full-time employers charges over $6000 for a week of work for the client which on some weeks is things like adjusting some styles and changing some config, and they are appreciative every time.7

My colleague had to build an inventory application with MS access. He did it in 6 months without no manual and then quit :D

Fren: yo check this IC out

Is there anywhere to start with cracking/hacking? I don't have friends because the "friends" always want to feel superior towards me and I just wanna shove some shit up their asses.12
-
Gotta love having developer friends you can trust to help you out when stuck, this goes to all you unsung heroes!
-
So, I've been asked to build a tool that scrape's one's Facebook friends and their friends. I (surprisingly) managed to get it done.
I don't know what to feel about this.2 -
Two friends of mine (one of which actually introduced me to devRant) refuse to post on here.
...there's no need to explain that I want them to enjoy devRant (at it's full potential) with me but they don't see a point in writing.
Would you be so kind and give them some motivation/reasons in the comments? What's the point of dev-ranting?9 -
I've alway pronounced it sequel but everyone I know swears it's SQL, so I say that now to fit in.
I feel like a spy, lying to my closest friends everyday...2 -
Have few close friends, not a swarm of people.
Saves time.
And keeps strong bonds with people that really matter.
Spending some "quality social time" is more valuable than shitload hours of fake fuckery with dumbfucks.
Just my opinion. -
A friend of me said that intel Pentium and i3 is the same, that all laptops with intel`s logo have the same processor, you just have to view the info. of yours...2
-
I did it! I've finally figured it out!
I've always had this feeling that AvatarOfKaine reminds me of someone. Todaybit finally hit me - O know who it is!
It's mr. Heckles. Always out of context, talks about hell knows what and every time he says smth the only sensible phrase that wants to come out of your mouth is ".... Anyway...."23 -
I lost all my friends due to my lifestyle.
Like literally there is no point to use WhatsApp ever again.17 -
How many here have friends that are like
Friend:"hey, heard so much good about Linux, can you install it for me?"
Me:"sure. What do you intend to use it for? "
Friend:"Facebook. Mostly Facebook. And some Instagram."
Me:"mmm k. I'd like to show case a bunch a distros and you pick your favourite."
One week later.
Friend:"OMG Linux sucks, I bought {game} but it cannot install..."
Lesson learned?
Remember to ask about likely headache candidates (like games), before doing one such "favor"2 -
After having finished an underpayed (friend discount) project for a few friends and their organization I conclode:
Don’t work for friends.3 -
I lent money to a dev friend in need, he said "I'll pay you back when the customer pays me" ... I'm ready to forgive the debt...
-
I was Noob af in my first year of engg!
My school friends and I decided to make a website.A website which will be a one stop shop for sports news, movies etc etc.
We took a week to make a logo and decide website's name. Before writing a single line of code we fought with one of group members and he left the project.😂
In the name of website we didn't do anything other than logo and name and the semester got over.I failed in two subjects in that semester.
In third semester i realized nothing gonna happen if i stay with these people so i started with Android on my own and I'm an android dev now.
Ps:I was the only from that group that actually made a website. It was E-commerce website that i made in sem 4 -
Went to my favorite scrapyard but it's hard to catch my friends here (I worked here for 6 months, learned a lotttttt). I always leave a surprise. This time I also brought aluminum to give so I much hide the bag and I'm placing a ridle.. This bottle in the front door. Let's see if they get it3
-
I'm new here and I don't know if this is a thing -
But I wanted to know if anyone would be interested in coding with me (+_+)
I didn't know of a better approach...13 -
Normal people spend their holiday weekend with friends and family. I spent it bisecting RetroArch to figure out exactly when a Wii U crash bug started happening.
(I exaggerate. There was plenty of friends and family time)2 -
When friends ask me to do some coding...
Them: I want/need this and that and... [trillions of features and "cool" stuffs]
Me: ...okay
Them: Oh and this and that and [more "cool" stuff]
Me: Alright.. when do you need it?
Them: something around a week?
Is it just me or does everyone -not- accustomed to coding think that projects are usually done in a few days...?
Maybe the common opinion about coders is something like: They aren't humans, they are machines which convert caffeine during night time to source code3 -
Anyone else celebrating new years alone at home? My "friends" are having a party somewhere but didn't invite me cause why would they? 🤷♂️
Anyway, happy new year. Hope you're having a better time than I have.1 -
I'm in Paris this weekend, with some other developer friends!! Who is in for a Meetup!!! Let's talk code/rants!!
-
my boss on phone today, after a huge task list received these days:
- it would to build this "find my friends" feature in our existing app to boost downloads and reviews
- but i can't rebuild what Apple did.
- well why not?
- because i'm one guy, they are Apple and the rules don't apply to them
- ok but there are other apps that does this
- but they are not alone
- ok keep trying it must be a way
- is it urgent?
- no but it shall be done3 -
I’ve discovered I can almost never do business with friends or become friends with previously non-friend clients. It becomes too often an excuse not to pay me for my work.3
-
So my friend wants to learn software development. That's great and I've offered to help, but why when I ask how it's going does he say he's just been playing games? Why does he want to be a developer if he doesn't want to be a developer??4
-
My best friends from university. Somehow I ended up with friends who are all better than me in computer science. Thus, I am basically forced to work hard to keep up.
-
I don't know if this even belongs here, but lately, thinking about all the people that i used to know and how they just disappeared kinda makes me depressed. When i was a kid, i thought i was supposed to deal with loneliness, and i was very alone yet not realising the friends i had at the time and how i lost contact with all of them. So this is a rant on myself, fuck me. I had a bunch of friends online and in real life too, and all of them just vanished due to my indifference, wonder if they all are doing all right but fuck me i am a fucking moron and i absolutely desereved to be alone for like years. Take this rant with a grain of salt and approciate the people that you engage with in work or hell even online.2
-
Code/development introduced me to one of the best developers I know. I knew who he was before college, but it was the college group projects and also classes that really helped get to know him and learn from him. After college we are still pretty good friends
-
should I get a rubber duck to tell my life problems to? or are friends a better alternative to talk to? any experience? 😁5
-
Stupid project ideas pitched at me?
Well, basically everything my friends ever mentioned.
NO I don't wanna help you do shady things... and as soon as someone drops the word hacking I route the whole conversation to my inner /dev/null2 -
Started learning Python yesterday and with the help of the mighty internet I wrote a script that tells me how many lines of Java code I have written in a project. Just 9 lines of python and it works like a charm. Was so excited that I tried to tell my non Dev friends about it, but they where like "yeah, what ever"... I am always kinda sad that so many people aren't interested in programming, not even a tiny bit :/
But anyways... Python my love, where have you been all my life?2 -
My two best friends has been the most influential mentors I've ever had. One is a compiler engineer at a major computing company and the other one is a security engineer at a major company in Japan.
Both have sat down and taken the time to not only teach me different aspects of the computing environment, but empowered me to learn more on my own. One project I was working on ended up tapping into both of their teachings. I took a moment to think back on when they were teaching me and felt so grateful to have such patient teachers.
The moral here is that not everyone knows what you do. What makes a good teacher is someone who takes the time to teach and empower the individual. It really goes a long way. -
Who made friends here at devrant?
Cuz I made none and I would love to have some Dev friends over the world.... 😄11 -
I read this thing today that went like -
Your friends won't become clients. But your clients can become friends.
It struck a weird chord in me ngl.10 -
I feel like I'm making friends here but then sometimes its like gaps of hours without activity ... 🤔 ... Then ... I realize I have been lurking along too much and make some posts and comments and there it is! 🤗🔥
Activity 🤷♂️
Thank you for that :/ us devs need eachother -
I got a friend in the older class. He has C++ classes now. I’m constantly helping him, even though I don’t know C++ much 😂1

DON’T READ IF YOU DON’T LIKE LONG STORIES. ALSO DON’T EVEN BOTHER INTERACTING IF YOU’RE JUST GOING TO BE NEGATIVE.🙂
How should I start… Because I am a socially awkward dumb a**, I have trouble talking to literally everyone, even my close friends. One of which in particular that (I think) I have liked for years, but I’m too dumb to know for sure so I confessed to them to figure it out, and, like I thought, they rejected me, but I didn’t really feel anything, so I was like, “Oh, guess I don’t like them then🤷,” and things were fine even afterwards (this was a while ago btw.) But even if I am socially awkward, I at least try to wave or say hi to my friends when I see them. In relation to this, recently I have made a habit of saying hi to that one close friend in particular, and I don’t know much about my feelings, which means I definitely won’t know much about other peoples’ feelings, but it looked to me like that friend felt a bit uncomfortable whenever I said hi. Now, hitting me like a wrecking ball (lol), I realized, I probably love them. (Which is a completely new concept for me.) Which made it hurt ALL THE MORE when I asked my friend about their apparent discomfort, and got the answer I was hoping I wouldn’t. This friend no longer felt like we would be a good fit. The friend said that they don’t feel our vibes match (something like that), which I guess makes them not want to talk to me as much either, but we could still check in with each other occasionally. I told them, and meant, that I COMPLETELY understand, because I mean, who would really want to be friends with and talk to someone that barely talks themselves and barely makes an effort to make new friends or talk to other people? A friend that never comes and hangs out at their house or that doesn’t even like going out? But it hurt nonetheless. It confuses and hurts me that this friend doesn’t really want to talk to me but also apparently cares enough to not completely cut ties with me. I’m not mad at them in the slightest, but what am I supposed to do? Completely forget my feelings for them and the, albeit meager, memories we’ve made together as friends, but also keep them close enough to be at least acquaintances? I don’t think I can or want to do that, but I guess it’s not my choice now. I have to try.34 -
when someone suggest you a project idea out of their genius mind,
and the story is either it's impossible or there are tons of implementations.
you'll be like " you are so naive, you don't know anything", but you can't say that because you wanna make friends. -
Coworkers and I go out and do some golfing or batting cage every now and then.
Old friends from school and I talk randomly. On Facebook.
Most of my social life is twitch5 -
!rant
Sooooooo just got into Discorddd looking for groups and friends? Mostly devs and dev groups and meme groups about devs lol.. any options out there? All is appreciated. Lol4 -
Telling my non-coding friends I'm working on a cool personal project that I'm really passionate about:
Friend "Oh yeah sounds good.. That's, eh, nice, (Tension is building) ..LISTEN I HAVE THIS IDEA, maybe we can work something out? (Looking at me like they have invented the light bulb)
Me: -_-1 -
It has come to my attention that an IRL acquaintance praised my constructive activity in social media, but the only substantial activity I've had for like a year was on DevRant.
I wonder if any of my friends other than Mayank are on here.
Not very worried though, I hardly ever say things about other devs that I couldn't own if they found out.2 -
I thought you had to be great in the computer fields before your friends started asking to make their idea games. Just happened to me this morning.
Friend: Hey let's make an MMORPG!
Me: Bro that would take years...
F: Hmmm... fine then just an RPG.
M: *in my head* cuz that really changes things, it's still an RPG...
M: Lemme hear your idea
F: *proceeds to describe Fallout /but better/
F: And I'm willing to learn game design an hour or two a day
Idk how to make him realize that it takes money, time and more than two people!! -
Is there a way to tell your family/friends what kinda work you are doing without boring the shit outta them ?3
-
Doesn't want to use VCS and wants to deliver a project to client.
Note to self: Don't help friends in their misadventures -
I asked my manager for a day off on 27th May to watch the friends reunion, he had no idea of what friends is, now we are on a break.1
