Sister-in-law, PhD: What about pumpkin or courgette and salmon?
Me: ...
SIL: ...
Me: Could you add some parentheses?
SIL: (Pumpkin) or (courgette and salmon)?
Me: Much clearer, thanks! Go for courgette and salmon.6 -

Whenever I find a good github project I go straight for the "utils" folder to see if I can steal anything useful5

Woke up early. Feel great. Even office coffee tastes great. Today is going to be a good day.
Lead QA: - Hey I'm fixing some stuff in production, and now I can't reach it. Do you have the same problem?
TODAY IS A GOOD DAY, GO FIX YOUR OWN PROBLEM CUNT.
COFFEE TASTES FUCKING GREAT.2 -

Often saying fuck it when I've got a project and I kind of really need to use git but I'm not good with it so I just go back to good old scp again 😅11

Work has been very stressful lately...
But after one week of vacation (and two in front of me) I am ready to get back to my side-projects again...

Lets GO! This feels so good! I am glad to be back ;-)19 -
So you build a beautiful site; you spend good time on UX, refactoring, server optimisation, getting good page load speeds, SQL all optimised - life is good.
Commercial team comes in and slaps clickbait, generic advertising, tracking scrips over the lot.
Page loads go from a second to 30 seconds and even though you made sure all those crappy ad scripts are asynchronous pages still hang most times. PingdomTools lists your page scripts as going from 40 files to over 900... now users are ringing me up giving me grief about how slow this new company website is...5 -
I just implemented parallelism in one of my major data collection tools for work, and cut the tool's run duration by 90%. That seems like as good a time as any to go to sleep.2

Dev: …8 -
QA: You need to write a test script for your new web app before it can go live
Me: ok, I'll write some tests in PHP unit and automate the tests.
QA: Oh, can you do that? We just normally write a list in excel then go through each line and write pass or fail at the end.
Me: yeah, good one.
QA: Umm, I'm not joking.
Queue awkward silence...4 -

Lesson learned from wk111:
We gotta get out of the fucking house more guys and girls!
Go code on a fucking beach or a park or something. Drink some beers and wine. Smoke a couple of joints with good friends.6 -
Well that was a good little time off :)
Decided to go offline for a little and that was a good one, hello again.
Wrote a geoip service because I hate rate limits and such so fuck it, why not write one myself (data is not that accurate as it's free but quite alright if you ask me) (front end still fucking sucks).
So yes, that's I guess :P13 -
I don't understand unit testing, you won't explain it to me and I will never use it properly.
Go fuck yourself, internet of modules and node.js and fucktards who think they write good code but suddenly my simple webapp is 200mb big without even adding any content yet.16 -
The live devRant AMA/event thingy is in a few hours I think?
Gotta go to sleep right fucking now.
Don't want to get spoiled by the rants tomorrow morning.
This means nearly a whole day of no devRant 😫.
Anyways, good luck dfox and trogus!8 -
I resigned today 😍
No more dealing with shit architecture and experimental beta technologies being used in production which went down constantly 😎

I've just come back from a business networking event. There was a speaker who gave a talk about not wasting time.
On of her points was catching up on emails, from your smart whilst waiting to go into meetings, as that's apparently wasted time.
All I do whilst waiting to go into meetings is read devrant :)
It puts me in s good mood :)3 -
Yo, is this devrant or spamspace???
Like, do you even fucking work, mates? Are you a dev? How doesn't a fucking legacy code piss you off on a daily basis? What are all the ways you want to respond to your customer's/PM's abuse? Does your lead dev even know jackshit?
Where did all your quality rants go? Why do you all sound like second graders writing essays for school? Have some passion for your job, and hatred for the incompetence for others!
Now, go produce some quality rants! Funny ones too! Bonus points if it's angry-funny.20 -
I asked a question at stackoverflow related to MySQL. I tried to explain everything a good as I could.
Now i go for a cigarette and expect a -5 when I come back....5 -

Moved in with my SO. No not Stack Overflow. Anyway. The hardest part about it is choosing a good Wifi name. We acctually need two names.

Edit: the perfect name would have a Star Wars reference in it.33 -
"It's just a tiny change in one function. What can go wrong? I don't need to test, I'm not that stupid to mess this up". Apparently I am. Pushed the changes, and the [Firefox] extension basically stopped working. Lost about 1.5k users in 2 days. Good times ;)2

Doesn't matter how good u are or how long you've been doing it
Anything that can go wrong WILL go wrong -
sometimes in my head i go through code i wrote some time ago and think: "did i think of this case? if that happens something could go very wrong." when i look at the code i see that i already thought about it and catched the case back then. then i am like "daaaamn i am good".
do you know that feel? :D1 -
do you have a GREAT eye for design?!
can you write a bubble sort algorithm in binary?!
do you know native, desktop, embedded, AND web programming languages?!
do you know you can go fuck yourselves?!
good luck unicorn searching 🤡 companies. there is no human that can do all of those on a level that you want. but, go ahead and set yourself up for failure. i'll remain firmly grounded on planet earth 🌎6 -
Nobody with more then 10 brain cells would look at this and go, "yeah, that looks like good design!"13

The tour provided with Golang is really nice for learning the basics..
Just doing
go get golang.org/x/tour/gotour
go tool tour
starts a local webserver with the tour. The lessons and the exercises at the end of certain chapters are really easily understandable.
I think it might also be a good tool to refresh the knowledge about Golang for those that haven't used it in a while.1 -
This is the type of coding that makes you go insane. It may be good for beginners but that's it. Also we have to use this because it's for a competition.10

PM, on kickoff meeting: good code speaks for itself, need no documentation
PM, on UAT day: how does this features work, where is the documentation for it?
Dev: Just do me a favor and go fuck yourself.1 -
Went outside for a jobintervju ...
Isn't it just horrible to go outside and meet something called other people? My GF said it could be good for me, yeah right!
I even saw something called a sun. It was really bright, must be awful to have to watch that thing everyday.8 -
"Hmm, I have a meeting with a few of the executives today to go over that new feature... I'd better wear my good t-shirt and jeans today."
I love working at a place where there is no dress code for devs!4 -
Won a new job; 50% payrise which, for a junior, is a pretty big deal.
A bigger team, with more established practices, a commitment to testing and code coverage, code reviews, and a smaller learning surface area as I go forward (focusing entirely on the js ecosystem, 80% frontend).
So this is all good.
But I *have* to go back to Windows. Windows *7*. Their infosec practices move at a glacial pace. After two glorious years on mac/linux I feel like being sick.7 -
My mentor at my current internship helped me improve my debugging skills. He's a great dev and has really good debugging skills. He showed me his ways of approaching things and how I should go about solving difficult problems.
I think he never directly helped me when I got stuck. I ask him like 'I have this confusing problem, can you help me out?' and he's like 'well yes, but actually no" and he almost always tells me that I can figure it out myself. And I do figure it out, eventually.
Now, I seldom feel the need to go to him. I guess that's a good improvement. :)3 -
>Partners grandad gets new phone
>Partner calls me at work to tell me she's going to set it up

Yesterday was a good day. -

Once you've been writing code for so long, being excited writing code can go away. I still find that I get the rush when working with a new language or technology. It feels good to be a beginner again 🙂3

Me: *Gives second round in an interview, didn’t go as expected, waits for the result (at this moment we can’t go further with your profile kinda result)*
HR: *calls after 2 weeks* Hi, hope you’re doing good, your last round was declared CNS (Candidate no show)
Me: was it this bad, that the guy interviewing me simply wiped off my existence?
HR: let me figure out something. *Calls back after 5 mins* since it was a no show, we’ve decided to not go with your profile further.
Me: 🥲 it didn’t have to be this brutal of a rejection6 -
I've had my wallet for a good 5/6 years. I love it. It's getting old. So much so I was about to go look for a new trusty pocket friend, however, thanks to devRant it now has a new lease of life... Well, hopefully for a few more months at least. 😪4

Still wondering when I'll have a laptop good enough to run Android Studio with ease.
The lag makes me go ughhh6 -
I have a bit strange personal rule - If I encounter something more than three times during 3hrs period, I certainly must learn as much as possible about it. Last night I've stumbled upon few listings in Go language.
So, starting this morning, decided to learn Go. So far, so good.
P.S. Is it just me or Go really does have strong C/C++ vibe (but is, indeed, higher level language)? Old guy like me, must like that.12 -
Having a healthy body is good. I go trail running on the weekends usually 1200+ above Sea Level.
On weekdays I just go home and play video games or watch TV. On Friday nights, party with friends in the city.4 -
Really good when you cant connect your pc with a 100€ os to the internet and you click on "show more solutions" and it only offers you online support and, even dumber, "ask a friend". Thanks, great work everybody, really good. Why don't you just write "sorry our os is too shity, but we don't want to care about it anymore, go fuck yourself in the corner over there"5

I was talking to a friend of mine(more of an acquaintance really) about our shared interest in Go and how I am trying to see if I can implement it more and more into my daily activities(simple CLI utilities, maybe a web app or two) and he mentioned how much he likes it after being part of a Java shop for such a long time. He said that he got tired of the verbosity of Java and how Go was such a "breath of fresh air"
var i SomeShit
do.SomeShit(&i)
if do.Error != nil {
panic(do.Error)
}
fmt.Println("Could not agree at all")
On how bullshitty it is to say that one switched over to Golang because of the verbosity of other languages, specially when anything meaningful that you might do with the code requires constant checking.
And let us not
forget := lol.bullshit(); forget != nil {
about some of the other bs you get to do
oh look scoped errors
}
.....like I get it man. I like the language, no, It ain't replacing C or C++ for low level shit, not with a garbage collector are you fucking high?
But yes, I do like the language, they got a lot of shit right, the thing is, I feel like I know everything about it already since A) shit is way too simple, simple enough to be used by anyone really and B) other than goroutines this language does not really bring anything new to the table, far as I can tell.
I mean shit. I thought I was at odds with Python disliking syntactical whitespace enough to make me try and not use an otherwise perfectly good lang(Python I love you but hate syntactical whitespace) but Golang really puts me at odds. I love it but dislike it at the same time.8 -
Is it just me or do you guys sometimes go like "Ah fuck it, haven't had a good night's sleep in so long, I guess I should sleep early tonight" and then you look at your watch and its already late?
God what I would give to get up early for once.7 -
Two years ago I said good riddance and go fucking die to everything Microsoft and I haven't looked back since.
I can work completely on my Mac. Life is now stress free.13 -
This is a good Experience -
I used to go to a class to learn C++(was a kid back then).
One of the sir there told me -
"Anybody can write code, just knowing coding is not enough, idea is more important. You should have good ideas and solutions, you can alaways find people to code for you"
This has stuck with me till this day.1 -

I bitch a lot about the complexity of Rust. But every time I do it I go ahead and applaud just how fucking good the compiler messages are.
A fucking thing of beauty.2 -

So I let myself go by all of this talk about giving more freedom and autonomy to your team. "Don't micro-manage them", they said. "Trust them," they said. And that's the way I wish to be treated. That's how I personally work best.
Alas, this only works only when they're truly good at what they're doing. Sometimes I feel like we'd go faster if I did everything myself. These baby devs must be taken by the hand every damn step of the way.5 -
I still wonder why people go to programming classes thinking a dev is paid a lot. Not all devs are paid a lot and it takes passion and hard work to be a good dev. Don't just go there for the money. You'll regret wasting your life.4

I got my dirty fingers on this leak of an AMAZING ML model capable of pondering EVERY PARAMETER IN THE UNIVERSE and saying if your business idea needs improvement or is good to go.

To all the developers with a permanent job:

Please everybody, go to your Project/Product Manager, Product Owner or whoever thinks it is a good idea to sacrify the usability and speed of the software/product for sake of faster updates, solutions that are easier/simpler to develop and implement, or new features not even the users itself could think of. Thanks.2 -
I really like to use PHP. It's not so interesting language as C# is, but I like it. But every now and them I read someone complaining about PHP.
So let's go: as PHP is not an exactly good language to backend, what would be a good one to use with my personal projects?
Thanks!17 -

M: C++, but if you want to make apps, go with unity
F: yeah I want to make an android app
M: sounds good, but I'd try out renderscript if I were you
F: yeah I've used that before
M: oh really? What does it do?
F: I don't know
M: its for gpgpu because android game devs needed better performance
F: yeah I've used that
M: what does gpgpu stand for?
F: umm… i know what gpu stands for

Websphere...what a piece of shit! IBM, you really should be embarrassed. Dependency injections stops working when the injected bean is in another jar (even though it's on the class path). Works great in JBoss.

I have nothing but good things to say about the book “Building Microservices” by Sam Newman.
Very well written, high-level look at Microservices. It took a lot of the assumptions I had built and dissected the different options and approaches with drawback included.
Now, onto “Building Microservices With Go” by Nic Jackson!1 -

First time posting. But I need an advice, I want to learn a programming language to get a better job. I have just the basics of C#, should I keep going with C# or go with F#? I heard a lot of good thing about F#. Thanks. You guys are awesome!6

Rant
Wtf are you taking man?
You’re supposed to be an experienced engineer but what the fuck are you doing leaking null pointer exceptions everywhere you go?
Just 1 more month. Good thing my manager isn’t renewing your contract.
Fuck!!!! -
As far as mobile games go I am never to interested in or really bother much with some of them. But Honkai Impact 3rd really makes me go woaaah every time I play it. The graphics are absolutely stunning and so is the gameplay. Damned game looks absolutely gorgeous and it makes me think or xbox360 graphics. I do not have a good eye for graphics at all and I am not much of a pc or console gamer. So take that with a grain of salt.4

LinkedIn sends me notif about an InMail. I open it via the notif. I close the app. The notif count badge is still on the app icon. I open the app again. Go back to the message. Close the app. Now the badge is gone.
Good going LinkedIn 👌2 -
Have you ever done tab (thinking that the text will indent) and enter to go to new line in Outlook and sent email by accident ? I have done couple of times now ! Not good .1

So stress is back on. Justed wanted to work. Computer crashed.
Deadlines with Windows 10 isn’t a good combo. Booting takes between 15 and 30 minutes ofcourse. Site needs to go live monday.

You know it's a damn good day at work when you show up and they tell you to go break into the sheriff's department computers.2
-
I just spent 4 hours troubleshooting 2 pcs, neither of them working yet. I'm way too tired, and I'm not even sure what I'm saying is correct English but I don't care. Man, fuck my life. I just wanna go to bed, but my brain doesn't think that's a good idea1
-
When you type 'git facebook' in your browser and need a couple of seconds to figure out what's wrong with it, it might be a sign to take a break and go on a holiday far from any computers. Good thing I have next week off...

Fuck Emby and their decision to go proprietary. A lot of good folks worked their asses off helping make Emby what it is today and they turn around and fuck the open source community.
I'm glad Jellyfin decided to fork them and continue the work there.
LukePulverenti you can go fuck yourself!1 -
After hassling and saying all the benefits of Linux finally we agreed that she'd give Linux a go on her old laptop and after all the set ups she changes the background picture to windows xp's landscape just to feel good. Change never comes with some people.

Sometimes I want to go against my ethics principle and just use my skills to create a PONZI website or a scam site. I am a full stack developer, I can create one within two months.
However the financial strain I am having, I just want to so good 🤦♂️2 -
Python trusts you. It says "hey, if you want
to go poking around in dark places, I'm gonna trust that you've got
a good reason and you're not making trouble."
After all, we're all consenting adults here.5 -
Finished writing code for a feature. Begins code analysis. "Analysing code" moments later "Build Failed". Really?! fucking really?! you tell me that now?
Ok granted it is nearly 1AM here I should go to bed. Good night guys!1 -
Anyone know a good site to ask programming questions that are more on the looking for suggestions side of things rather than explicit answers? Apparently Stackoverflow mods would rather wave there mighty e-peen and close a thread if your looking for suggestions on how to go about something... 😕7

Yep....nothing wrong here.
Seems like a good time calculation.
Just Origin being Origin.
And that's when you know it time to go back to Steam :) -

I wonder would it be good if while replying a comment of a rant show the comment we are replying to.
Sometimes i just forget what i want to write, so i need to go back to see the comment.3 -
Not a rant, just a depressive thought.
I earn $135k USD a year(plus benefits) and haven't done anything useful in the last 2 months, most of the time I go to the bathroom or the coffee shop to play Disney Tsum Tsum.
Feel empty inside.
Good thing is about to end9 -
Hey guys! Finally decided to jump on board! This is my first rant so go easy.
Working on a project were some freedom of choice is allowed and thinking about using polymer to create a wordpress theme... Is this a good idea or a terrible one?

All my resolutions:
- Finish my fully FOSS gamedev workflow and start working on my game by March, have a concept demo by May when my matura exams come round.
- Do good on said exams and get into a good university.
- Do some political or social activism
- Learn the guitar to a campfire level
- Drink til I pass out if trump wins again.
- Make close friends with at least 10 new people
- Go on at least 6 dates2 -
That moment when I start to finish my project and after 4 hours playing games I realize that is time to go in bed!!
Good night to all.undefined ghost warrior need for speed chilling nothing to do with programming good night open xcode and close after game finish -
Going on a object orientated software development course today.
Ive done some, not alot, im mainly powershell fanatic since im automating alot as Server admin.
If the course is good/i enjoy developing like this, i leave the army and go for "development school" at summertime ! Super excited!!1 -
At this point, honestly, just to change to a business degree and work on being content instead. I have to go a good 20 years back tho, and change all my childhood dreams and aspirations too.

1 year a go i took angular js 1 tutorials and I was good at it then . I start working with c# and asp a lot. And when I started learning angularjs 4 it was like learning another language WTF9

today is one of those days were work is just a grind
that moment you are interested in nothing, can't find a good tune either and just want to go home and sleep (although you fear even that might not work)3 -
I'm intrigued, what are you all trying to learn in your spare time and how?
I'll go first, brushing up on maths by reading K A Stroud advanced engineering mathematics.
He's got an intro level book that's also very good.5 -
I am having a hard time to find a good chat for my work environment (Slack sucks). Since we have Office 365 subscription I thought to give Teams another go after 3 years.
Well, looks like it is going to wait another 3 years.15 -
Anyone working remotely here? What kind of work do you do? I have been doing gamedev for 4.5years and want to go remote, thinking of transition to webdev/backend, good idea?4

It took me literally 2 hours to implement a reset password function.
I should go to bed.. But I hop to catch a good friend of mine when she wakes up and exchange some messages, but who knows.. -
Got a new job. Its all good. Fun work, great colleagues and good pay. However, last week they mandated some new surveillance tech so all network traffic is unencrypted, logged, stored and analyzed.
Should I stay or should I go? I am big into privacy. What would you do?26 -
Is there a good offline C# compiler for iOS? I want to program on the go as I am not by my pc a lot.2

@zlice I am going to ...subtweet you? (Screenshot included)
Basically, so much what you said. 100%.
You stumble your way around different companies until you find something that sits right with you.
There are so many contributing factors to the "good company" and as many definitions as everyone will value different aspects of work. Good management? Tech stack to your liking? Kick ass colleagues? Interesting product? Good work life balance? Company contributing to world's welfare?
I can go on. Each of you will decide what is good, good enough, or decent and what sacrifices and tradeoffs are acceptable.2 -
SO sucks.
I'm looking for a community there I can learn good code practices through code review, but getting into a huge established open source project is really intimidating. Anyone have any good suggestions? My skill set is mostly Java and go2 -
So, I was using YT on my phone now since I'm at my family over the holidays. So far so good.
I just noticed, that google apparently cant even make apps good. FFS, I'm playing a YT vid (fullscreen, landscape) and then close fullscreen.
Guess how it looks now:
a) landscape mode
b) portrait mode
c) locked portrait mode until you go back to the fuckin homescreen where it rotates again
WTF YT5 -
There's a humble bumble special Python with a 6-month Pycharm pro + 50$ in digital ocean + Fluent Python + talk.python classes + more at 25$.
A portion of the sales go to the Python foundation, it's a super good deal!!!1 -
Is it a good idea to go to a coding bootcamp and shell out thousands of dollars? How about a college? I know some devs think it’s best to self learn and pay no one. I’m currently trying to make a big decision and looking for pointers.3
-
Be good at your job and go just that bit beyond. It can be simple as that in a non-hostile environment.1

Day 4 of devWholesome...
Lets try and do something good today! Exercise and eating healthy is important. Go for a walk with your dog today or go on the treadmill. Any amount of exercise is good for you! Make sure you are also eating healthy and eating all 3 meals of the day. Make sure you are keeping up with your hygiene and making sure your body is healthy. And as always, make the most of your day!1 -
I feel like a good rule of thumb of how good a developer is (or how senior are they) is whether they know when a question should go in stackover and when it should go in softwareengineerin.stackexchange.
Do anybody agree?1 -
Am I wrong if I say that I'm fed up with working for startups and that I don't want to go back for a long time. Feeling so good now!6

Its FRIDAY and soon to have weekend!! Lets get such a healing weekend by having some stretches even you can go jogging or gym. Have a healthy food, watching movie, go dating (if you have one) and get sleeping time enough. You have to live in your good life !!25

So at work, I was trying to convince a senior programmer to adopt Golang for a new project that would need to handle large amount of throughput as oppose to Django with gunicorn and other optimizations (which is what we usually do).
The response was "we'd have a hard maintaining it, as no one really knows Go and it will be hard to hire people with Go knowledge".
So my question: "in your opinion, is that a good reason?" I have some go experience from other jobs, it seems like a superior solution for this problem.6 -
This is the link that has brought me the most joy acceleration in my life.
Go see what it does yourself.
I love adminer so much.
Hyper recommended.
Screw MySQL Workbench.

Was spending good 20 minutes trying to understand why by bind was not working, its time to go home...3

Thinking about dropping Google cloud console and Google domains and just go back to namecheap, just pay the $80 a year to have them host it and not have to worry about the server's and databases personally...
Anyone else got good recommendations other than namecheap?6 -
!dev related, kinda
Why did the devs think it was a good idea for the iPhone to have the flash go off as a notification, I feel like the person opposite me was having a strobe light show5 -
TLDR: Decision making is hard...
Get up at 7am, weather looks crappy but need go to the Drs today in NYC.
Original plan was to spend the morning in the park catching up on my reading list. Don't really want to goto the park now but lunch is still good? (Appt at 4pm, was only one left)
Walk into train station, pay for ticket. Get email from Drs saying he's sick...
Oh good... Except I already paid for the ticket.
Decide it's not worth it since weather is crap.
Walk out the station and... it's sunny... Fck...
Now what.... I can either go home and code or go shopping locally and eat out.
Currently decisions these and well shopping and eating out are also hard decisions... -
Hey, want to start deeper learning in c++. Do you know any good free resources, tutorials etc. And if I then use an IDE with which should I go. Currently installing eclipse for c and c++6
-
Which php framework is worth getting into? Laravel seems to have most market or should I go with CakePHP or even something else? any info is appreciated (how are the docs, is it hard to find solutions, how is the error handler, how hard is it to learn etc), I am sure people around here have used a good amount of them and can tell their rage or good things about it. 😳8
-
Hey, go and buy yourself a good flash drive. Usb 3.2, SanDisk with the mechanism of an automatic switchblade, you know, all the good stuff. You deserve it.8
-
I tried...
I failed...
I give up...
Just going to go back to being selfish now... trying to change others and rally support just ain't my thing and isn't worth my time or energy.
Guess good thing I didn't start on the Collab idea... Not many people would use it...7 -
Is it a good idea to go everything Sony? Like a vaio laptop, an Xperia phone, Sony earphones, maybe psvita for games (I rarely play anyway and it’s hackable for retro stuff)? I generally like their aesthetics.9

Never go live without legit scrutiny! If you are freelancing, ask a good friend who codes or someone you trust.
But never go live without code reviews!!!3 -
tl;dr:
What is a good start in go?
My wife wants to upgrade her coding skills from „I heard it at college“ to „I actually did something with it“.
I want to learn Go and start coding a bit more. My background is mostly C++ (Backend) and a bit Java (Fronted) some years ago before I went more into testing. For test automation I always use the language that makes the project happy, often Java.
We want want to join forces now, take a vacation and implement a small microservice in Go for my wife’s product (she is a PO) using pair programming.
I want to prepare that a bit. What is a good course or web tutorial to start, that some of you took and can recommend?
Thank you very much!!6 -
Got new isp, 200 200 very good speed yet the routers wireless doesn't go through a fucking brick wall urgh. Can't watch video from the other side off the wall xD3
-
Sometimes it's hard to go well in job interview because not always the HR person knows about programming enough to let you show off a little bit with some interesting questions and then you end the interview at if you didn't leave a good impression.7
-
Best place to get developer/programmer HD backgrounds? My go-to for Gaming backgrounds is Wallpaper Abyss, but no coding/minimalist ones there (good ones at least)2

Wow Go is awesome, throwing some of its magic and making data ingestion that took one minute plus and make it run under 3 seconds.

0. They will welcome it
They will make it bigger

Wondering where people find good paid coding gigs(like freelance or contacts)
Debated it instead of trying to go into a company but all I see is like code me an aimbot or farm bot for a game5 -
I like how hiring managers want everyone to have 5 years of Golang experience. I've been writing go since 2014. There were hardly any Golang jobs in the market 4 years ago. Where would be getting this enterprise Golang experience from? The only big companies that had full systems written in Go 4 years ago was Google and DropBox.
My year of extensive Golang isnt good enough. I feel year after year manager's expectations move further and further from reality.1 -
Finally go around to de-Googling my phone:

About to start writing a report for my programming languages course, I’m writing it over GoLang, If anybody has any good resources for any information on Go, let me know!
The report extends into the history, paradigms, features, memory management system, and anything else I can possibly find on this language. I can find some pretty decent references on the footer of Wikipedia, but I wanted to see if anybody who actually used Go had anything they’d like to share.
Thanks :)1 -
So because @QuanticoCEO said devs should go deep and learn low level.
How many years did it take you until you thought you'd be/you're a good senior developer?
I think I learned a lot but I also think it's just a fraction of how much I'd have to learn to understand the bigger picture.
And do you have any recommandations on material which made you go "OHHHHHHH"?
(My new discovery was the YT-channel of "thechernoproject" who made me rethink some things)3 -
Where do you guys go to learn new languages and frameworks?
Curious if there are any good premium services I’m not aware about?5 -
Do you know any android-phones that go good with custom ROMs and aren't that expensive?
My trusty Moto Z Play doesn't seem to be supported by Lineage anymore, so I might need to get a new one.5 -
First time using Expo in an already built React Native project. Good thing makes project lighter and easier to work with on slow devices.
However:
Bye bye Gradle build

One hour to go and our plane will set off.
It wasn't a good idea to read Homo Faber before this flight.
My German Teacher says he's waiting for a new Film of the book. Instead of this "engineer" back in 1954, you should just a computer nerd xD
I wanna see that1 -
Sadly took me a little longer than I’d like to admit to go from well placed print statements to using a debugger. Granted there are times when print statements are needed, but for all the devs out there who are using an IDE with a perfectly good debugger and yet doesn’t use it... please use it. It literally gives you a mapping of all objects and data types around a break point that you can easily glance at to speed up debugging. Go figure!9

I keep on checking if there are recruiters messaging me in LinkedIn,
but I am not actively looking.
and even if something is looking good to me, I feel so rusty on my CS I won't even give it a go... -
To my review of 2021 ... a good lesson was learned.
I was doing so much for my company.. late night workings.. team handling.. client handline.. to name a few.. But in december they broke my heart.. Altough after little negotiation I was able to get a good package but somehow I Realized this is the time to switch.
But am at good position in my current company so I just cant go away for few pennies. I have to check for company's culture.. my tech stack.. etc too..
But I am determined to get a good job and packge with Challeging tech stack in 2022.
Hope this 2022 Bring brighter future to all of you .. Happy New year -

Do any of you have any good resources at hand on good ways of managing Docker deploys? I don't want to use something as overkill as Kubernetes. In the end I want to be able to spin up the application on a $5 DigitalOcean droplet if need be.
I need to figure out a good way of managing, deploying and rolling back a live application. Perhaps just using docker-compose is the way to go. Though I want your ideas.
Thanks8 -
ok, I think I'm good to go now,
the shitposts are too much,
the devs don't give 2 shits about the apps
i guess bye, it was fun7 -
So I have a pretty decent job on a more than good wage working for a larger company... I have my own team and get a good bit of responsibility with the role..... But the culture outside of my team is non existent....business is a mess and everything is a war to get anything done... I wish I could just take my team and do my own thing.... So.....
An old colleague and a great friend wants us to do our own thing... The money looks good... There is great demand... She is already doing it and making great money and turning down work and wants an equal partner in the business idea.. Equal equity split...
.... Why am I so worried about leaving a job I don't really have much loyalty too? Ironically the friend wanting me to go do our own thing with hired me here and got me promoted!
I want to go do it but something is keeping me here and I don't know what.... Am I just making excuses not to go?
Am I being rational wanting to stay or tricked of this false security a big firm offers?
Thoughts in the comments plz4 -
Just discovered a public API that support perpage parameter.

Continuing to talk about my previous post:
https://devrant.io/rants/814261/ -> link to the posting.
This weekend I've been sending some resumes to see if I can get a good spot, I still keep looking for a good remote spot, because here companies are not accustomed to paying well and not to pay their passage to the workplace (but they require you to go there to do Something you can do from your home, much less your feeding cost.
In this previous post some colleagues of profession gave me tips for I got good remote jobs being from my country, I hope it all works out. -
By making badly optimized code that takes forever to run, I have a good reason to do nothing but feel like I'm achieving something by glancing at the progress bar every so often. "Still rolling, way to go my little rock with lightnings. You can do it!"

What are some good books to learn C# and the.net framework(newest)?
I found a cool project on github I'm interested in learning about, and sadly don't know those yet but I do have a few months before I go back to school. Learning time
Thanks In advance :)2 -
I have a teaching side gig and got a course assigned on "designing and implementing cloud solutions". So I started with teaching Go, which some IT professionals consider a fairly good pick for cloud applications.
Now I get complaints from people that think I'm not allowed to teach programming in general and Go in particular in this course, which is about "designing and implementing cloud solutions".
We live in interesting times.8 -

Good news! I didn't shave my beard, but talked things over with my wife. Turns out we were just lost in communication due to all of the time I spend on my computer.
We had passionate love making and planned a trip with the kids to go to 30A over the summer.
Life's good.3 -
At my boarding school the admins are too bad : all the 5 min the internet go out for 30s because of overload (when too many computers are downloading) and now when we must work the internet go out so we can't work....
Windows says that the proxy is not responding so it's again a big overload and the internet came back the next day thank of reboot ...
This system is soooo shity.....
And my school want to have a good image of technology....... WOW ! -
while I can appreciate good process I sometimes miss the thrill of pushing code from my dev machine to production. hey it works at my desk what could go wrong?

One good thing about the rona I'm guessing is employers would be more willing to let top performers go full blown remote.

Is it something like, with a great salary band you don't need to go to US? I'm a software developer, I get good money, in India.
There are a lot of people moving to US, the people I think can only take right decisions.14 -
Can't find a good dev internship here, sure imma move out. Trying to move out, nuuh u uh, you need a years experience to get a resident-work permit in any good country that's got dev internships. Now do I go in as a master's student or what now :(4

I hate it when colleagues name their commits with a non descriptive name like "minor changes", "minor fixes", "small changes" and so on. I know that good naming is a difficult task in software development, but do I expect to much when I want them to explain shortly what exactly they changed since the last commit?
Good commit messages are always helpful if you want to do good PR reviews and furthermore if you want to go back to an older commit because someone fucked something up.
Don't get me wrong, my colleagues are great people and great developers, but some of them ignore the fact that good commit messages might be useful in the future for others and themselves -
Bought top tier Asus ROG phone 3. Good decision than iPhone 12 pro max. Just half the price of that iPhone. I love YouTube Vanced and Max call of duty mobile max settings 😀

I often get posed the option of using Go or Node, personally I think they’re both good languages and that they both have different purposes. But I was just wondering, what’s the sentiment on DevRant?9

Does anyone know how Go, the programming language is working?
People likes it, is it useful, is it good or there are better alternatives?
Would like to know the opinions of those who know about it :]7 -
Sublime text. Just last week I had to implement Java batch with 60+ vars. Without sublime text to edit multiple lines to handle these vars I would go crazy.

Ugh. Been working on a huge React component that's now dependant on another co-workers PR, and had this one open for like a week. Go to merge and one of the fucking useless reviewers decides that *now* is the best time to flag everything wrong with my code!
I get it, it's good feedback, but uh... Could you not have done this a FUCKING WEEK AGO instead of RIGHT BEFORE I GO TO MERGE?!
Prick.2 -
Having to take Intro to programming with Python and being told I can't use tools that haven't been taught in that course yet. It's hard to go backwards. Had to do comparisons between 2 lists, can't use zip(). Things like that. It was a good class, just frustrating.1

I'm an engineer trying to become a div, but the thing is I'm having a hard time figuring out where to start!
started with android but gave up shortly, then went with web and got really good with html, css and js but I don't know where to go from here.
should I learn python or go full on js and learn angular.
guys I'm really lost and don't know where to go, any suggestions or links to help me start this journey.15 -
hey there
recently I've been thinking about a good way to deploy mass amounts of containers on kubernetes, but before I just go with docker, I want to learn about some alternatives
what are some other container softwares you guys use?2 -
Day off today, and I decide to go to Remington with my parents. However, I am working on a coding project and I'm forced to work and watch simultaneously. No problem.
However, for THE LOVE OF FUCKING GOD, my parents decide that it's not good enough, so they decide to **abandon** me at Remington and go get food elsewhere. I start calling and they don't pick up.
I'm freaking out and go over to the McDonald's and voila, they are right there eating McDonald's and calling me a bad son for not paying attention to them.
Some days I just want to snap my computer in half.2 -
they say go back to school...
well I did, the same one ( only by name ) and I remembered how good it is to sleep there ;) -
Has anyone developed websocket server in Nodejs?
I am planning to use socketcluster. Has anyone had experience using it? Is it good or should I go for something else?11 -

Data test generator tool?
I'm on my first work with a development that will go to production, and I'd like to test performance, UI and all of that with random generated data. I know about dbSchema but it's trial pulls me back -
What's a good way to learn springboot development? I know the fundamentals of java as a language but never used springboot, and I recently got an internshIp that uses it.
Also, where would I go to learn more about proper best coding practices?
Thanks everyone!6 -
Hey. I’m starting to learn web development and just wanted to get the opinion of some of you out there. Do you think it’s a good thing or should I go and learn a different thing like how to build Artificial Intelligence or something?5

Don’t be afraid to try new things & don’t wait to have a “good useful idea” or to create “something new”. You have no ideas? Create something you need! You still can’t figure out what to create? Just go for a standard project (e.g: movie list)!

does anyone here into blockchain? hows it going.. Is it good to switch from Full stack dev to blockchain . I have covered the basic.. don't know whether or not should I go into this field .. Its just am getting free learning .. but not sure whether or not I have to switch into this5

I’m not good at frontend and I’ve accepted that but it’s frustrating because I just am not good at making things look good and I hate spending the time on the looks when I want to just go have fun with the back end.
I will say though getting it to look the way I want is super satisfying as well.
Any advice or resources?2 -
Yeah they support their children. And now they saw how good I am (I'm in a project with my father and I help my mother, who is a teacher, daily) even more.
Aah but don't be in the computer so much go get fresh air. -
I'm going to have to go in and add another layer again soon into another program. I'm tired of this. Serious question, are there any good dotnet tools out there that help automatically do this? Or will I have to write my own?1

Any good tips on how to prepare for a system design technical interview?
(So for questions like "how would you go about designing and implementing an app like LinkedIn?" for example). -
Here I am doing my degree in computers. Actually it sucks to feel some things that we forget in each language. Neither can we gather up all basics in one go from anywhere. It really feels worse. I have been reading books lately but each book does not cover up all concepts. Or else I may not be reading it good enough. I am confused how should I go about any language. For now particularly java. How should I proceed with it...?3

I think I'm supposed to start this with some kind of no rant tag, but I've never been good at following the rules. I just watched the first episode of the third season of Rick and Morty. Best ep I've watched yet!
That is all, go write some awesome code.2 -

Good morning
I can't decide between react-native, flutter and ionic.
If I would go for flutter I have to learn dart, but that would be no problem.
Any recommendations?
Expierence in these technologies?
Thank you7 -
Is Kotlin the new hype? Should I go for java 8 or kotlin for development of android app? Also does anyone know any good course for ui/ux development(I am a backend developer)

Altera Quartus II. Fuck it. Fuck its licensing, its installation script, and its humongous size!!!
Seriously! It's almost impossible to install it properly on Linux in one go! 😠
And "Aborted. The application will now exit". Well, thank you my good man, for the fucking helpful error message!!! Go screw yourself!
Also, first post ^^ -
