Asus introduces dual screen laptop with touchscreen instead of keyboard. Just imaging programming with that
DISCLAIMER: it’s just a concept39 -
- Take a course called "Mobile Application Development"
- Teacher is new and is thus lost on how things work because there is no formal training for them
- Teacher only knows Objective-C so that's all we're allowed to use
- Nobody owns a Mac and I think one or two people had an iPhone/iPad
- Only 4 public Mac computers are available to the school
- One to two people are on them frequently, limiting our time on them as well
- Not a part of the schools normal imaging and updating system, so we get to do it ourselves, which takes up like a week or two of classes (4 classes)
- This includes installing XCode and getting Apple IDs
- No real instructions are given besides "implement the APIs for Facebook, Twitter, and Google Maps into an app"
- Being an ass, for the final day instead of showing off the app we made I made a PowerPoint of my dislike of Objective-C and various struggles I ran into and how I decided not to make the app at all.

Many years ago at school the machines were imaged using Norton Ghost. A floppy disk containing Norton Ghost and it's configuration would be put into the machine, which would automatically start the imaging process.
When these floppy disks inevitably started erroring they'd be tossed into the rubbish bin. I grabbed one of these broken disks, inserted it a few times until my machine would recognise it, and hey presto, the config file along with the domain admin password were now visible.1 -
About 3 years ago, my girlfriend had this laptop that she got from her University. She had to give the laptop back to get reset, but didn't want to lose all of her data on it, and a backup would be around 750GB.
So I suggested that I would backup the laptop (was thinking to just dd an image and go from there). So I plugged in my mobile USB and external hard drive, and started the imaging process. Given the amount of data and setup, the process should have taken about 5hours. So we left it there for 5h.
Please be mindful that at this stage in my life I knew very little about boot processes, oses, and hardware.
5h after. The laptop screen is black and it ain't responsive. Not sure what happened, the dd process was completed, but the laptop refused to boot into windows. Tried a number of boot tools, and spent a crazy night hacking at the machine. But the university had some of sort of fail safe to not allow anyone to boot into windows if someone opened bios without entering a password. Whatever this was, I spent over 12h trying to either open mount the windows partition with a Ubuntu usb or mount the corrupt dd image on my laptop.
Long story short, after throwing at it a number of fixes. I was able to mount the image, copy out all of her personal data, and reinstall a new version of Windows on her laptop. The university didnt understand why the laptop was already reset. She still mentions this to me anytime I want to take a "custom approach" to software lol2 -
If you are more interested in “being right” (aka winning an argument) than learning from experiences (both your own and others), then I will not waste my time on you.
Story time:
As a member of a startup accelerator I had the privilege to run into many types of people.
There were 2 entrepreneurs who liked to argue a lot. They would argue not just with other members but with advisors, investors, EIRs, everyone. They were much more interested in “being right” than learning from the experiences of those around them.
They flustered many people, but sometime we would have REALLY seasoned investors or entrepreneurs speak to us. Those folks never got flustered.
I needed to know why...
So I pulled aside one of the bigger investors and asked him why. This was his response.
“I’ve invested and advised on every type of company you can imaging, with every type of entrepreneur. There is a lot to be learned from that experience. But if you are more interested in winning and argument than learning from experiences and creating a good business then you are not worth my time.”
He would give his advice and then go right back to his email for those folks.
Smart
1 of the 2 entrepreneur I mentioned actually turned it around. Once he found out that the investor had invested in and almost identical company in the same space and that they had sold for 100M+ he finally started to listen. You could see him really fighting the urge to argue, but he did it. That guy ended up being successful and is on track growing a company today.
The other guy had no success and is still on the Slack group of the co-working space arguing with anyone who will engage him.
I know which one of those I would want to be.
PS. If this hurts your feeling and you feel like commenting. Feel free. You’ll look very cute.2 -
I'm a bit confused as to why people are re-imaging their machines from one OS to another?
Use Vagrant (or Docker) and just set up an OS in a Virtual Machine? Then if you break it you just destroy it and provision it again. You don't destroy your whole machine.14 -
Finally got fed up with nvm and npm being messed up somehow and decided to reinstall it. It’s finally finished after 84 years and more text than the Bible and the complete works of William Shakespeare has been scrolling in my terminal as it installs.
Aaaand it’s still just as broken as before. I’m now considering re-imaging the entire machine and starting over again.
I know all the “right answers” as to why and how we use Node but I sometimes wonder how much of that is sunk-cost groupthink as well as “we’ve always done it this way”.
Should _setting up_ to write code and release software take longer than it does to write code and release software?3 -
imaging getting organic traffic.
but
Hugeeeee but.
you pay for the ads which redirects to the search keyword that ranks your site to the top.1 -
I am honestly flattered by the fact that @scor really, unironically thinks that “by the frequency and varsity and depth you post and comment and self imaging”, I can't be a single person, and there is a whole TEAM behind me!
Honestly, I don't care about insults. Neither yours, nor of that schmuck that is salty because he posted some stupid misogynic shit a while ago, I reposted it as a screenshot, and he was obliterated by the community.
I'm only posting this because people out there legitimately think I'm a hive mind. It's not every day that you're told whatever you do cannot be done by one person. To me, this is more of a compliment.
Looking past devRant, I would like to meet @scor and other haters IRL. I have no hard feelings. I'm just an autistic person with bipolar disorder. I post whatever I want, as it's somewhat therapeutic.
You don't have to acknowledge it, but here's an honest, personal message: if you at any point compare yourself to me and lose, remember, my personality and creativity is a negligent, slight payoff for a literal hell that is a mental disorder. My thoughts are thinking themselves. I can't control them. My body is twitching constantly. I'm both actively anxious and always tired. My intellect suffers a massive penalty in a depressive phase, like now.
Finding at least some positive side to that hellscape is absolutely vital, and any person with a disorder can tell you that.
The fact that I'm social, I have friends and a job is a miracle. I'm privileged. I've seen a lot of people less lucky than me. They weren't able to monetize their troubled, sharp brain. I was.21 -
literally the last fucking thing i need to work for my mvp is ffmpeg to fucking work. i literally need to add audio at various start times in the video, sounds so easy right? too bad its a complex, cryptic, and horrible peice of shit.
no wonder stackoverflow is full of ffmpeg garbage

So i'm currently working on my PiStation..
(look at my previous post if you're interested)
I'm imaging over RetroPie over to the SD card, screw back together the housing, and it boots up fine. As soon as i configured my XBOX-controller i got to the wifi-settings. And when i try to access my wifi, guess what, it doesn't connect to my f**kin wifi. So i double check my wifi-settings in the router i just bought to get over my roommates paranoia (that's a whole another story. Just in short, he's got no idea of IT-security and tries to be an admin, which results in a HUGE amount of bulls**t), confirm that the settings are alright, double check the PSK too, anything is fine. So i go through the whole process again, download the image (from their goddamn slow servers), open up the PiStation, image it over to the SD card, close it back up, anything boots up fine and works, except this f**king wifi. And the thing is, i COULD connect it with a patchcable, but i dont want cables going anywhere through my room. Currently imaging over recalbox OS, will keep you updated. I just want to play some old retro games ._.2 -
So I believe in replicated effort.
I like the idea of multiple groups of people creating or engaging in the very same endeavor at any moment as long as intermediaries between these people visit on each project and determine its merits.
Examples could be data gathering, or development or research.
Example maybe being multiple people operating methods of altitude heightmap gathers or canvas imaging and publishing the data.
Or canvassing neighborhoods for new construction.
Or as in my case creating a nice handy dandy file types database for use as lookup table values in my application.
You know what I hate however ?
HAVING TO DO IT ALL THE HELL OVER AGAIN NO MATTER HOW QUICK OF A TASK ONCE I'VE DONE THE TASK ITS LIKELY NOT GOING TO GET MUCH BETTER THE SECOND OR THIRD GODDAMN TIME AROUND !!!!4 -
So I'm sitting here reexamining the prototext file of the densenet model and i'm confused by what i'm seeing.
I realize its a fancy 'convolutional network' but how do you pretrain a model with what looks like a whollllleee bunch of complex programmatic procedures in between input and output ?
I thought each layer was just an activation code, bias and so many connected weights which act as coefficents to the last layers output ?
how is gradient descent performed where you have imaging procedures being performed ?1 -
Fellow Ansible developers. I'm talking to you.
Are you freaking high or simply your morning pills have some serious side effects?
How do you manage to introduce a number of regressions in every fucking major release? How on earth you feel comfortable in breaking API in a minor and even bug fix releases?
You need to get me right. I really like Ansible project but those things... I imaging you every other day as a bunch of hamsters trying to find an exit in a shitty labyrinth which you call the codebase.
If you will not stop to eat and smoke those things this would became a lot worse indeed.3
