A request to all of you posting these feel-good rants about your past teachers.
Maybe shoot them a message to tell them how much you appreciated them, teaching is a very rough and thankless job for the most part.
It's funny how much it meant to some of my past teachers...4 -

One thing i haven't told them is my username 🤣6 -
I love it when companies expect you to care about their vision and act like the work is 100x more important than it is.

People who think software development is not a creative job are wrong. It is very much similar to other creative jobs. It is logic based creativity.
Ain't it? 😛9 -

Me: nothing much, saving a document.
Boss: is that the best way to save it?

Boss: ... ... ... fair enough.5 -
I know the hate for Facebook is strong here, but I was just approached to work on their eCrimes team... Catching online predators and the like... I'm honestly considering it, given how much evidence is posted. But it requires so much more programming knowledge than I have... I don't know where to start...27

As devs we like to complain about our jobs. But I just want to take a moment and acknowledge how truly amazing writing software is. Nothing else has given me so much joy and happiness. The endless stream of new things to learn, the elusive art of clean code, and deep understanding of systems required for architecture. There is so much depth to this career we have all chosen and I hope you guys love it just as much as I do.5

devRant is the only social media I like and use regularly.
It certainly has it faults, as any network of people will, but overall I think it provides a much needed conversation between like-minded people.3 -
Just spent 20 minutes implementing a utility class.... then realized I don't need it...
The solution is actually much simpler... only takes 1 line of code...7 -
The best feeling is writing some software and then random strangers telling you how much they love it. So satisfying.3

Boss: "How much time do you get this bug fixed?"

Linux vs Microsoft
Well, this war is certainly one of the oldest. IMO,
Linux - great for automating stuff, free, and customisable.
Windows - user friendly, softwares much more easily available, much easier to use.
Frankly, I have tried using Linux a lot of times, but never liked it one bit. I am a GUI fan and hate to type commands for every little thing. Plus installing Ubuntu wiped out my disk once and I lost all my school memories ( this was in 2008, I didn't know much about backups, was quite young) ,so I am quite vary of it. I just don't feel it to be intuitive. Just to do a simple task, I loathe to learn difficult commands, and just read the syntax.
However, I have no bias against people who use Linux.
It is like religion, live and let live, follow whatever suits you.
On devrant, why's there so much hate for Windows? Because it is paid? Because it has updates? So what!
I never had a problem with it, I update once a month, takes 10 mins. If you set up your active hours correctly, it works great, you can disable updates also. Windows 10 is highly stable. It is paid, but in my country almost all laptops come with windows preinstalled. The OS-less laptops are about $10 cheaper, which is not that much to freak about.
Would love to hear your views and logical arguments.
Please be polite.36 -

It has happened again. The EU has passed article 11 and 13 which has now doomed the internet for all EU Citizens.
After GDPR passed, tons of people became more aware that the EU parliament has that much control over everyday life things. Thus there was much more scrutiny over what else they may pass.
Despite expert testimony on why the articles are bad, they rejected all amendments and passed it as is.
It is no longer worth it to serve EU customers. I’m sorry guys, but I’m out.

What really grinds my gears.
When a co-worker gives me feedback from a review of my code be like "you should use if..elseif..else instead of switch, because it performs much better.
in this case performing much better means it is only 25 pikosecond instead of 30 pikosecond in a function which is called apprx. 3 times a month in production *facepalm*
I'm always with "let's get maximum performance from our software", but c'mon... really?!???4 -
You know what Linux has taught me? That above anything, a computer is just a tool. There is a lot you can do with the tool, but do not depend on it so much that you fear losing it.1

Do you think I should give Atom another shot or stick with VSCode?
I've tried it several times but I always found it sluggish, slow in everything and bugged. VSCode is so much smoother and fast.
But damn Atom is so much more good looking, especially with nebula theme.

Is it because people believe it doesn’t act according to the spirit of the Linux community (whatever that is) or are their technical reasons?16 -

I kind of just came to an insight that my computer is sort of my partner in crime.
I "teach" it how to do something that I'm probably better of not doing or should do in moderation... But then it gives me access to so much of the stuff, I spend a lot more time doing it... more effectively.
So I actually don't save much time because it makes it easier so I now do even more...
I would post some screenshots but its uhh..... NSFW... at least this one is.25 -

I recently got into an argument with some people, and I want your opinion. I did a speed code in Java (just sped up clip of programming, because it looks cool lol), and someone commented:
"Way too much static abuse here. Jesus"
In which I replied:
"Actually, sir. There is near none at all, just because I use static methods does not make it static abuse. A static method belongs to the class, and is somewhat permanent. It is not a type (instance, cat, dog, animal, etc.) class, it is a Utility class, much like other dependencies you'd use are Utilities and not types."
To which they reply:
"Getting and setting is a Utility?"
Boi. If it is a static variable, yes. Like, what?5 -
Friend: "what is it, you love so much about being a developer?"
Me: "The feeling & satisfaction of writing something better & prettier than my past self."
Friend: "Oh. You sound like a Manga writer, I understand about as much about their mind as yours.."
Me: "Yeaah.. Can't argue there.. Can I? *chuckles*" -
Brazil is the country where companies spend the most to find out how much tax they should pay on a product. This process is so complicated that it consumes more than half of all software development professionals available. I'm one of them, and I can't stand working with this shit anymore. I have other projects, but I can never get rid of this niche that is more profitable. It sucks when even though you do what you love, you use it for such a stupid purpose, which is to calculate how much you should give to the government.10

Update to https://devrant.com/rants/1415880/...
After numerous emails back and forth my colleague finally came to the conclusion that the customers WSUS is responsible (i might accidentally forgot to mention that in my original mail, oops :) ) but also blamed one of my other colleagues for enabling deduplication on the servers so he can't reliably tell wherever a hard drive is full. (??!?)
But anyway, no beeing sorry for him beeing wrong and impulsively blaming and disabling my scripts, because of course he's not.
I really god damn hate this guy. Were it not for this beeing devRant with a focus on devs i'd have a lot more stories of this special snowflake.1 -

Any other people here that find Python to be actually a harder language than Java? With Java it's much easier to keep track of your code and to track what variables refer to certain object types.
It feels like Python has much more quirks and feels therefore much more inconsistent as a language. Object oriented programming is more verbose with static methods and decorators being vague for example. This makes it harder to grasp concepts like design patterns and SOLID principles in Python imo.7 -

As much as I love CodeIgniter, it is really showing its age (I know v4 is in progress). Most of the extensions and libraries are really old (4,5 years of no activity on GitHub) or abandoned, feeling like one is visiting 2008, it makes me sad.
-
Just installed Signal. Now what? No one I know uses it or has reason to since I'd be the only one they talk to on it. Any cool groups to join or something?
Dark theme on it is much appreciated!17 -
The secondary access point stopped working, turns out the date/time is wrong. You guessed it, the ntp server is hard-coded in the firmware (last version), no option to change it, it a linksys but not supported by openwrt.
Grabbed a second one, flashed with openwrt, same shit, and can't access by ssh because it's an old dropbear build.
Hate trashing things, but sometimes too much is too much 🍺2 -
The hardest part about having stickers on my laptop ,is when it stops working and I have to get a new one from IT. So much for sticker collecting.1

It drives me crazy when there are unclosed parens or quotes anywhere.
Is it too much to ask for people to run their Facebook posts through a compiler first? -
Why is it so hard to find backend Java developers?
So much work to do... so few people to do it with... -_-11 -
How much of development is commenting out sections of code because the client hasn't sent you the data and next release uncommenting it?5

Is SVN still acceptable and how much worse is it compared to git? I was just transferred to a team which still uses it and I am debating whether I should just comply and learn it or to push for git.15

Anyone able to tell me why people hate so much on PHP and still do? Is it really that bad a language?5

Just gotta say, YouTube videos that show connecting a form to MySQL make it so much more complicated than it is...

Doesn't it happen to you that you examine too much stock code photos?
"'new Mail()'? Now I want to know what library that is."

Why is it fast to search using Google than to search a file on my computer using Cortana or File explorer and my hard drive is just about 200GB full yet the Internet is far much bigger?3

Play Picross.
...Pretty much that's how I come up with the "bright" idea of making a generator for it. It works but it generates valid hard-to-solve maps (I like randomized Picross but my script's is...hurrgghh....)2 -
Question: can I describe OOP as "not in a loop, doesn't use interrupts" ?
I don't know much outside of OOP so describing it is like describing life, hard.9 -
Visual Studio causes Covid!
Well, not really, but it surely disrupts life!
It is a damned shame that a product that promises so much is so flaky!
I have abandoned attempts to use it.
-loses form design
-fails to recognise break points
-changes target configuration on it’s own
-JUST PLAIN SUCKS!!!!
NOT USESBLE6 -
Not sure an anti social bunch as us developers are would make too much use of it, but is there a PM feature planned for devRant?10
-
Why would anyone want to run Laravel when it runs so much slower than raw PHP? Surely the development time saved is negated by the amount of optimisation work required?4
-
Feeling smug tweaking the customer's website while doing some changes they ordered. It is SO MUCH BETTER, but they will never notice. Hopefully their customers will.

Not so much a rant or a dev thing. What is the quote that drives you?
For me it is: "Those who don't have discipline, don't deserve to dream" -unknown4 -
React + Redux + Router is do fucking awesome stack. Love It much more than angular 1.x. App works so fast, is scalable and easy to maintain.
Reactive paradigm for the winner!2 -
Is looking for the string "cv" too much for a folder with 962 files and 116 folders having a total of 753MB?
Apparently, it is for the Windows Explorer.
Come on...10 -
Do you guys have any passive or semi-passive income going ? How much and what is it ?
Looking to build myself a safe situation, any advice is worth taking, cheers.12 -
So I found put what is maladaptive daydream is. I always had it. Recently when I experienced it again, I tried to understand, and I got to a lot of things about it. Researches on handling it are very new and doesn't provide much support but I will deal with it. This podcast talks about it, I can relate to everything but the suicide part:
https://podcasts.google.com/feed/...
In short, when you daydream so much that you have very detailed daydreams and it interrupts your work, your relationships etc. that's when daydreaming becomes maladaptive. As so many people have it but it is not talked about it much, I wanted to put this post on.
I will try to control it with mindfulness and taking care of my body. I hope it will work.4 -
How much of ur job is spent actually innovating and designing new architecture and how much of it is just copy pasting libraries and preexisting APIs?6
-
My writing is so bad that usually I'm the only one that understands it
My excuse is that as a programmer I won't be writing by hand that much2 -
My rant yesterday or whenever it was.
Dumbass tier 2 support staff told me i didn't know what i was doing and i had to do it his way while my way is pretty much the standard -
It is quite disappointing when some developers only rely on using libraries / dependencies(or whatever you call it) rather than do it manually. I know it can make the work faster but still using too much libraries will make it worst. It’s not bad using libraries, but if you use too much libraries it doesn’t degrade the performance of the app ( too much memory space when you only need that certain action and you include the whole library) but when the library becomes deprecated and no updates that might cause a problem.
It’s not bad using libraries, but not too much.2 -
Why can't developers get dark themes right, or at least let me stylize it the way I want it? If you are only changing the background, black is *never* a good choice because it contrasts too much with the other default (and still bright) colors. Dark gray works much better.2
-
Today is going to be a shitty day, I can already tell!
As much as I want to love cpanel as it makes things easy, it just gets so hard to make things awkward! -
My parents know that I work with "codes" in computers to make all sort of things 😁. My siblings have some idea of what programming and software engineering is. They tell me that it is fun (they have tried it), but they still don't value it that much 😕
-
I have never used Docker and/or Kubernetes. Motivate me to use it by telling me how cool it is.
I want to build a complete ci-pipeline but am too lazy to start... there is so much to do, and I don't know where to start.6 -
I thought it would be nice of me to take my fellow Developers for lunch. One of them is total bitch. She ate almost all my fries that I ordered. She ordered Chicken Chopsuey and was not able to that much because had to much fries.
Fuck man!6 -
I don’t get why ARM assembly is so much clunkier than it should be. It could’ve been so much more readable and easy to write in if more dev-friendliness was built into the syntax.14

NextJS.. WAY too fucking fast!! not only is this bullshit loading the whole website super fucking fast, it loads all pages of all sizes in milliseconds, and even SEO optimizes the whole ass website SO fucking good the website ALWAYS ranks #1. This is insane. Even sublinks in SEO are working. Whenever i open a website and it loads super fucking fast i immediately know it's built in nextjs. When i inspect element it i am always right, it is indeed built in "/_next/" nextjs! Learning this bullshit framework makes me start loving it more. So much shit got so much simpler especially the SEO because this bullshit uses SSR!9
-
Anyone using Kubernetes? Just want to know how much many people actually you it vs the actual hype there is around it8

Yanno, would be awesome if everything wasn't tied to one main thread. Why is it so much effort to have your ai just run in a separate thread huh4

Is it worthy to spend so much time solving hacker rank, codility, code chef challenges or just learning new technologies and becoming good a t it? At the end, where should we put our energy on?2

Quite frankly im embarrassed to say how much time i wasted having no idea why my pipeline is failing because it cant login to my aws account3

So this one is more for web devs out there, but is Adobe Experience Manager as popular in the enterprise works as my boss claims? I've never heard of it getting used much, and I don't hear about it in web development circles.2

How much of a red flag is it if a programmer gets concepts like interfaces and classes, but when asked what an interface is, can't give me a straight answer?8

Woow I am amazed. Just started learning c# in combination with Unity and I am already loving it. It is much like Java so for me it is easy to understand and it works increddibly well with callbacks and getters / setters!1 -

Got the update to Android Oreo on my S7 edge yesterday.
I love it. It made my phone work so much faster(really, so much!). Everything is smoother and new cool featured have been added, the UI looks incredybly modern and nice.
But there is one BIG disadvantage.
The batteryusage is terrible now. In bad times my phone lost 7%-8% in a half an our. I heard that they had the same issue when the s8 got the update to android oreo.
Pls samsung you are my favourite phone company. Fix it, it is driving me crazy!!!1 -
Our new project manager is super cringe. It's made daily stands just horrible. It turns out he's come schooled. Oh man ... that explains so much.3
-
We hired a new project manager and he decided that we should document our whole platform which was very lacking.
But now, for every minor feature/rework, he expects that it should also be documented. Currently, it feels we have too much documentation that is not easily searchable... Half our time is maintaining Jira and the other 40% is maintaining the code and 10% is developing new features....
Is there a thing as too much documentation?9 -
Anyone else feels like the Github mobile app is pretty much useless and its existence proved why they didn’t create it sooner in the first place?2

I’m applying at Alorica to find out how much pain it is to be that guy at CSR

For me, the biggest distraction is definitely hunger. It just pops up sometimes and overtime it gets unbearable. And then I need to cook something. So much wasted time.

why is kotlin picking up so much hype is it actually completely stable now? Would it be better to develop android apps in kotlin rather than Java for my next app? Is java going to become obsolete/deprecated for android?1
-
How is it possible that nextjs developers could build a much more sophisticated web platforms than i do, much faster much more rapidly and easily and ship it to production for almost no costs, not even using any devops pipeline, unit or untegration testing, while i do all of that + devops and it costs me to pay for servers on aws?????
Literally what a nextjs developer can build in 1 month it would take me at least 3-4 months11 -
Why does Python get so much hate? It is literally like a Basic programming language. Easy to learn and guaranteed to get a job because of massive demand.10

I just start reading about tensorflow.
Is it a crazy idea to train a model with about 40 classes?
How much images should I use at least for one class?4 -

You know what is awesome. React with Redux. It is such a clean and scalable pattern for building UI. Conceptually not that easy but on once you have it. So much better than any other pattern I have seen.
But what fucks me off is working with other librarys with it not hard just fucking annoying.2 -
I have published my app, it is stable and functional. Design is simple but not ugly. I do not have much downloads. What can I do to make users to try it?4

Symfony is a mess. The source code is a mess with classes that are never in the right place. The book is a mess. It skips over things that pretty much break the project it's supposed to build.
Not only they haven't fixed it (current book is pretty much a rehash of last book), they think they can actually sell that crap.2 -
It’s frustrating when an issue is so much bigger than you can control and people in IT that should understand don’t get it.

Anyone here using couchdb? Any thoughts about it? Advice? Practical uses? Any comment is very much welcome :)2

How easy is it to change from wordpress to drupal?? Can anyone share your experience please... Thank you soo much1

I'm learning python and I feel more and more like it!
I either have too much space, or not enough. And this is screwing my chance to pick up tabs... -
!rant does anyone know what sustainable computing is? I googled it but I don't think I understand much..like, if I took this as my major for uni then what will my potential careers be like? Is it a better choice then software engineering? 😕😕😕3

It does not matter how much you try to write a clean code , there is always a room for better one ...
-
I've stumbled upon some sources (mostly C/C++ and Pascal) during reorganizing backups in home LAN from 25+ years ago. Hell, I've used to be better coder then (code is more optimized and cleaner).
Perhaps it is just hardware (much, much more powerful) and choice of languages/libraries/frameworks I use nowadays?!3 -
PHP is so much pain to configure when it comes to create an api service. Node is a much better way to go

Am I seeing multiple month old posts on my feed here because I wasn't really using devrant much till like three days ago, or is it because I've spent so much time on it that all the recent posts have been exhausted?
Deactivated instagram a few days ago and switched over to devrant as the primary procrastination social media. This is a much better place but it feels slightly odd to comment on a month old post.2 -
What i think is... Participating and securing a rank in hackathons is much easier than organising it.5

Started learning Ansible and HashiCorp's Terraform and it is really cool. I like their documentation so much!))
Are they the best for now, or there are some better similar projects?1 -
I HATE dealing with Map objects in Java. Much like everything else in Java, the API is far too verbose. What's more annoying is how Oracle seems unbothered to improve it.5

Taking a break from coding is a good thing. As much as I love it, when I do it too much, I get burned out pretty quickly.1

Why the fuck Lighthouse gives me score >90 when I run it from my laptop but ~70 when I run it from my PC? I know that variability is a thing but that's a tad bit too much.6

Is it just me... Or is there like two different scrolling behaviours in the app on android? When I've for the blue theme with white text it seems really gittery when I'm first scrolling down rant comments or the main rants feed.. Then about halfway down it goes much smoother... No idea why...

Yo.
Is it always worthwhile to learn web development?
Because of too much website builder out there
I'm feeling like my skill is now useless😟15 -
When they introduce you to an older project and before opening it up they say “well we got much better since then and do much better coding now..”
This is the moment when you know you’re f*cked -
Experience, intuition and 50-200% risk premium.
For me it is important to not put too much effort in it, as the developer estimation is usually mangled through sales and management anyway and doesn't have much to do with the final price.
And as nobody really bases internal budget and schedule on it as well, it's kind of pointless in most cases. -
Educate them about context switching and how bad it is for productivity. Also deliver high quality work, at the end you’ll earn their trust and it makes for a much better work environment.
-
last day before holidays starts. It was horrible so much to do, organizing, meetings and still no end...
but the rain is droping on the window and this sound make my feels much better1 -
Serious question here: why the discourse about spaces vs tabs? Hitting the tab key /once/ is just much more efficient than hitting the space bar /four times/, isn't it?9

I know how many people hate systemd. I started reading about it a week ago and I am enjoying it. Seems a much better alternative to previous things.

mod-php is weird and should never have existed.
I hate having to deal with it, even if it's only still in use in years old legacy systems. FPM is so much nicer. -
git commit -m "The test core dumps, I go home" && git push

Guidewire is the work of satan. It is the worst framework I have ever worked with. OOTB code is full of antipatterns, creating gui is a pain, and it has its own language that is a pure joke. Every task I had had to have some sort of workarounds. You cant junit test it. Entity builders are a mess and you cant mock gosu classes. I hate it so much.
-
Im thankful that i have work despite the epidemic and all, but work is really just too much for me, recently too much work is given and i need to squeeze in 2days of work in one work day. It can really impact your thinking. It also makes me feel less incontrol of my life.
