Mom : My washing machine is not working.
Please fix it.
Me : I am a computer engineer.
Mom : You are an engineer though.
Me : That's not how it works.

2 hours and many YouTube tutorials later
Me : It's done.
Mom : Didn't I tell you you can do it.24 -
Normal devRant user:
- Look, the algo it's awesome, it matches similar content posts, it's so funny!
Meanwhile at devRant Headquarters:
trogus: When are you telling them?
dfox: Ignorance is bliss, my friend
trogus: Well, at least we know the random number generator it's not coded by Sony though, otherwise they would suspect12 -
I have the best gf in the world.
She tries to understand what I spend so many hours working on, even though she has little interest in it. She is seriously patient with me and lets me do my thing just because she knows it makes me happy.6 -
🦫Me a kid: I hope some day I will earn enough $ to by a cool-ass PC and play games on highest graphics presets
🤡Me an adult: I sure did earn enough $ to afford a cool-ass PC though it is a shame that I cannot find time & energy to play games9 -
GUYS WE HAVE BEEN WRITING FOR LOOPS IN JAVA WRONG THE WHOLE TIME. Here is how it should be done correctly...
int i = 0;
for(;(i<10) ? true : false;)
{
i++;
System.out.println(i);
}
Jokes aside though does anyone have any more horrid ways to write this?20 -
Pranks again today. Mother of God the level of those pranks is becoming high as fuck.
Define high?
Having to debug shit at system (cron, firewalling, users, sometimes even digging through logs/dmesg) level because weird shit happens all day long.
This is upping my Linux skills a lot though! I love it 😍9 -
Made myself a little sparker :3 judging from the spark gap, the output is about 6-7kV I guess. Can't measure it though, it's way too high for my multimeters to handle. Taser, beefed up bugzapper module, electronic cigarette lighter, so many possible uses for this thing 😋49

The dutch referendum against the new mass surveillance is going to happen and one politician said that he'll continue with it no matter what the outcome is.
We've got a dutch version of john oliver over here (Arjen Lubach).
Man, how he burned that politician into the ground, it was nearly painful to watch! (The video is in dutch though)7 -
So... m starting my internship tomorrow. 4 months, 6-8 hours a day, 5 days a week.
M VERY anxious and quite frightened to b honest.
Wish me luck guys 😨😨😅😅
It is kinda what I wanted though... contains web parts but also C++ 😍
Tech stack: c++, JS, Python 😅26 -
TLDR: Fuck you, Client A
1. Want to change the business flow during UAT and decide the deadline to be less than 4 weeks, even though that's how the business flow stated on the docs
2. He threatening us not to pay if it isn't done, even though he's not the one paying us
3. He said time isn't a problem because he can provide a table and chair that is put in front of his table
Fuck you, Client A12 -
Firefox Quantum is the only software in beta stage I know of, that is more stable than the release one. I have to admit that I am somewhat of a fanboy when it comes to Firefox since I have been using it for the past 12 years. I never admitted it's quirks even though I secretly knew chrome had a better performance and stability lately. This rebirth gives me so much hope! YES! Firefox is not dieing!8

Refactored a legacy source file and reduced it from 2.8k lines to 300 lines.
Mixed feelings: happy that it is much simpler now and sad that my current project team members never go back to delete unused code.
Testing pending though 😜7 -
Hi everyone! Progress is slow for the game development.
I'm finally (and hopefully) done character design though I have a fuckton to do for 10+ characters.
Tbh it was my first time but got the help from the art community to give me a lot of feedback!20 -
This is more on work and life balance.
1. Don't do hard work, but do 'Smart work', else you will end up burn yourself 100%.
2. Don't think your manager is your guardian angel, even though it seems like sometimes. He has his own goals to achieve.
3. Spend considerable time daily in and out of office/work, for your own development/improvement.
4. Learn new languages and technologies.
5. Stop making things perfect, 'good' is enough.
and it goes on ............3 -
Found this in my dad's house.
Looks as if he didn't used it.
Any one know how to install this somehow? (Even though it is impossible, probably)37 -
Ah... The satisfying feeling when you close a ticket with Not an Issue aka the User is Dumb...
Though it took a long time to get the evidence I needed...3 -

There are some extremely competent, blind developers where I work. They have a tool that read screen elements out loud to them.
At first it was chocking to see they work with the screen off. It makes total sense though, however this thought never crossed my mind before. Their headphones serve as screen to them, which is pretty cool.9 -
Atom please!
Why does it have to be so slow? It's so pretty though. Mesmerizing even and I can never go back to sublime now.
The lag and crashes is killing me slowly, like a hot girlfriend that is somewhat crazy..29 -

This meme is not that funny, but after long day of coding when your brain turns into potato, it becomes hilarious.. why though? 😂4

Deepin is sexy. Made me horney
Who want a Mac now
Though I did had trouble with my PppoE internet connection, which wasn't working in ubuntu and in Deepin majority of sites were not loading, but I had fixed it (MTU )15 -

I'm just amazed what 512MB of RAM can do :O
That's htop from my VPS I feel sorry for the CPU though.
It is running three docker containers:
1. Dotnet Core
2. MySQL
3. OpenVPN26 -
One of the main reasons I completely left windows and osx for Linux is the fact that Linux is open source. In an era of mass surveillance, secret court orders ordering companies to build in backdoors into their products, companies building in tracking into their software and so on, I find it irresponsible to use closed source software.
Only my personal opinion though.8 -
Me:
* I wanna make a website
* I'm good at backend
* I suck at frontend
Friend:
* I wanna make a website
* I suck at backend
* I'm good at frontend
Initial though: Match made in heaven
Now: FFS Wordpress is not the kind of frontend I had in mind.

I wonder why stack overflow gets so much hate on here. To me, it is a tremendously helpful community. People are usually pleasant and forthcoming.
I sometimes see questions closed as "not constructive", even though it has thousands of upvotes, but generally, if you follow the rules, you'll have a good time.
Maybe people want SO to be something it is not, or maybe people behave differently around different technologies. I mostly find Python, Djang and general web answers, and they are fine5 -
What. The. Actual. Fuck.
My co-workers just tried to convince me that the following is a secure password:
"ThisIsASecurePassword2018"
Just... I mean... Why? *sigh*
Their argumentation is based on the new NIST guidelines.
If they've read these guidelines CAREFULLY though... (not only the appendix) it actually states "Don't use words from the dictionary". Passwords like these should even be rejected right away.15 -

Is it just me or does being a programmer sometimes feel like being a magician. It's such a weird profession. You're living in a bubble, nothing you create is physically tangible, yet anything is possible, and there is always more learn.
Most of the time it's art. Commenting out dead or obsolete code instead of removing it just because it feels like you put a little bit of yourself into it, even though it has no use anymore.
I sometimes wonder if there is any other profession out there that makes you ride the same rollercoaster of satisfaction, frustration, glory and defeat we've all been on.3 -
Devoloping and running a simulator for iOS is so smooth experience I am in love with it. Though I am an android user developing for android is such a pain sometime. Android studio needs more improvement.13

I really need to learn to think through how many stitches I’m putting into the first row of a project.
- Takes over an hour to do one row
- Already used more than 2k yards on it and it’s not even short blanket length yet (though width is ridiculous)11 -
I spent three hours making a custom color scheme for my instance of visual studio. Almost every color in it is a variation on hot pink. I've used it every day for the last three years.

First (working) attempts at writing a proxy that rewrites live requests from the devrant app, right now it only rewrites all notifications to be unread

Just made the shift to a Linux development environment from a windows one... Gotta say it feels so much better (love Ubuntu's interface)
Miss the use of photoshop though (I Know gimp exists... But photoshop is just so much better)
Any tips for a linux/ubuntu newbie??36 -
Nice, apparently Kingston isn't just selling storage anymore.. and it turns out that it's even legal as long as the 2 brands don't enter the same market and the brand name is a generic English word (not sure if Kingston is one of those though). Who knew?
Also, cheers!17 -
FUCK Windows 10 and it's HATEFUL tendency to open everything with FACKING Edge even though it overrides that the default browser is chrome. Especially fucking Skype for business.
Fack Skype too10 -
I'm a die hard ViM user and throughout the years I managed to put ViM key bindings in everything, from browser to even my cell phone for some reason (back in the day if I had the opportunity to put them in the fridge, I would have put them - people would have a hard time closing the door, though)
The thing is that it had become a liability because I see that, even though I "work really fast and efficiently" using this tool, when I have to use other things, like a different shell (I use zsh with some ViM sauce) or type in another editor, it sucks so hard.
Everything is wrong, nothing works, the typing is a mess.
Now I'm trying to force myself to use Vscode and I removed all those extensions from my browser and shell. It is uncomfortable, but the idea is to "rewire my muscle memory", if there is such thing.
Yeah.8 -
Definitely a rant.
I mean you've gotta love how samsung does not allow you to remove facebook and its derivates: insta, whatsapp and some other junk. Yeah, it allows you to "disable" them. But today I found whatsapp running and consuming >50M of storage even though it was DISABLED
precious, ain't it..? Facebook is a system app.
...18 -
Apparently color pair 0 is reserved in curses.
So modifying it will never work.
Even though that's not in the documentation.
I've wasted hours.
I finally changed the color pair to 1 and everything worked.
God.
Kill me now.2 -
Our team is developing a online e-commerce application. Since the owner uses Last Pass and doesn't like the extension icon in input fields, he asks the developer team to install the extension and ensure Last Pass was disabled for all input fields, password and usernames included, across the site. It was unacceptable to ask him to disable it though the extension menu.6

In the Vietnam War, soldiers called M16A1 "Mattel 16" because of its plastic parts and it being notoriously unreliable.
Though, Eugene Stoner didn't design a bad weapon. M16A1 passed the test phase perfectly, but it was tested by experienced marine soldiers who knew what they were doing. Eugene and Armalite didn't realize that even though the weapon worked reliably for marines didn't mean it would still be reliable in the hands of inexperienced privates.
This is why you should always account for proficiency and experience of your users.8 -
Who in their right mind though it would be a good idea to move the web development team to a new office without checking that the internet is connected.
What a waste of three working days.
And of course the project needs to be delivered by Sunday...3 -
colleague: AWS is facing some network issue.

me: ec2_prod ~# netstat | grep node

Made a website that can make images like this
Basically you just keep splitting the rectangle and color them
https://txstc55.github.io/draw-rect...
It’s very mobile unfriendly though

I found university very worthwhile, mainly for what it exposed me to that I wouldn’t have necessarily learned otherwise. University exposed me to a lot of knowledge which allowed me to discover the fields and concepts that really interested me. It also forced me to learn math, and I’ve come to really love mathematics, even though my knowledge is still not that deep. I really respect and appreciate math now that I have more than a superficial understanding of it.
CS-wise, the things that have been most useful in practice have been complexity, data structures, concurrency, and others, but complexity is probably the absolute most important thing to at least learn the basics of.
I would not say that university is a necessity though. You can absolutely get by teaching yourself, especially if you are disciplined/interested enough to keep doing it. The important thing is to learn *what* to learn.2 -
A very rudimentary bedroom project management system. Each note is a different section of the program I'm working on.
I do this at night to make extra money, so it's not exactly the best system. It works though.
Have a visual representation of progress somehow motivates me.7 -

It's been said before but devRant is the best. It's one of the only places I can talk with other devs. Even though they're surly. So many people on here who know so much more than me. I can learn and be motivated to get better. This is a great community. I'm genuinely thankful for it.4 -
AOSP
Even though Googles decisions around it are questionable most of the time, I love that we have an (almost) completely open ecosystem for smartphones.
And the thing about it I love the most is the amazing modding community around it. -

Setup git push notifications (to each of their own channels), together with automatic deployment via webhook, though I'll add notifications to that too, as it currently doesn't have any besides the log file.
Gitea really has been a blast for me to finally get all things git - done, maybe because it is just so lightweight.6 -

The life of a dyslexic developer is hard sometimes. Today really got me though when I was reading some developer docs and an example said:

For the next two minutes I was very puzzled and confused because I read it as "testicle"1 -
Finished my internship today, turns out I won't be getting hired because upper management is cutting back due to COVID.
Fuck fuck fuckity fuck, compared to the horror stories I've read here, it was beautiful. The work experience was super worth it though, despite the intern pay. Time to start looking for a real job I guess.2 -
React developers, What do you think about the new hooks api?
Will you refactor your codebases to use functional components or just stick with classes (even though the react community is moving towards removing classes completely)?
I think its awesome as it reduces the bundle sizes if you use function components though. I have been working on an awesome project for a while and I'm being tempted to refactor the whole codebase to use functions instead of classes. What do you think?19 -
Mac suddenly stopped working. Came to know motherboard is gone & the price to get it changed is around 60k.
Fuck you Apple. Never buying the shit again. Though one good thing came out of it ;it used to be my work machine too & now I'm chilling from last 4 days.13 -
I love Unix, Linux all that shit (macOS can fuck off though). But why WHY WHY does every pissing update have to break something?! Guys I need fucking networking, not even intertubes just basic networking.
Anyway, I've come up with a solution. It is quicker for me to install a new OS and restore files from backup than to fix it, so that's what I do.10 -
The performance is based on how much code you wrote that day.
Not mine though, i heard/read it from somewhere else.
But that’s fucked up, right?20 -
"Hey I wanted to show you a first version. We got the code working, all the data is coming in and being sorted properly!"
Boss: "it's ugly though, I can't show anyone that".

Because of some theft this year and even though we already have security cameras, my apartment building decided to check the front door locks so it's more secure.
This key looks very high tech... Only issue though is I never use the key anyway... I just entered the door code...
So what is the point of changing the locks? I'm going to guess whoever is stealing isn't picking the lock... People would notice... They must know the code.
Also it seems most of the apartment locks are digital key card/pins too. Wondering if this just means most owners are young or just are techies/devs...10 -
I hereby officially revoke my rant on Paint.NET:
https://devrant.com/rants/2393372/...
After some review I've gotta say, despite its shortcomings it is pretty good for what it is.
So yeah, gonna own that error in judgement.
(Eclipse still sucks though. No error there.)2 -
So someone posted their btc wallet details (system automated message through a custom tool) to a paste in alternative.
Was the login for an ssh. Wont confirm or deny ssh-ing into it, but another guy who saw the same thing messaged me, sent a screenshot. Account had 127k usd worth of btc in it.
Called the radio station it belonged to and gave them a heads up. Probably should reported it as well but people already seen it so it'll get taken down soon enough.
Here I am broke, busting my ass and reality throws this in my lap. But I ain't never been no god damn thief. Hope the radio station it belongs to doesnt get robbed by someone less honest though.
Honesty is probably half the reason I've spent half my life broke trying to find or make opportunities.
And frankly I've heard real horror stories of good faith reports (whitehat style pentesting, etc) and the people that report it get fucked hard by authorities. What can you do though.
Enough navel gazing though.
What the fuck is wrong with the people who build these sort of account reset tools anyway?12 -
Being mocked by the chef because I am "almost a week on a task"... Yeah dude, if a script which should update hundred thousands of main entities in production with a 45 min duration even though it is already paralleled is a half day job why don't you do it fucking yourself?4

I received a call from my boss saying I was laid off while I was out.
Wait a minute... I actually just woke up... This was all a dream...
Wonder if it is a message from my subconscious though...
Anyone else dream they get fired?5 -
Recently I came across a job advert that literally said:
"If you're still full of ideals and will to work, go look for a job elsewhere!!!"
Man, how fucked up is your company if this is how you promote it? Sad thing is that even though their website looked like shit, they boasted about big government projects there.2 -
That awkward moment when I was one step way from buying a program for 49$ and ending up using GitBook editor for markdown files for free.
Ya I know, but I suck at markdown files and I needed a decent editor lol
it is a nice editor though: https://www.gitbook.com/editor -
Reading about Lua, see this:
"Lua arrays are 1-based: the first index is 1 rather than 0 as it is for many other programming languages (though an explicit index of 0 is allowed)."

1. I'm lazy

"Mh, I should just write a short comment instead of writing a novel"
// This is a fucking detailed explaination of this shit, even though you can clearly see what it does because I usually write clean code. Also, it's a one-line comment, so have fun side-scrolling -
One thing I will never be able to stop is asking "why" if somebody tells me "X doesn't work", even though every second asshole takes it literal and tells me "I don't know why it doesn't work", instead of just mentally giving it a second and telling "why it doesn't work" by showing a screenshot or a message, because that's more likely what I meant.6

Is it just me or devrant has a bug of showing false notification badge?
It's stuck on this number even though I don't have any new notifications6 -
That's a question I found today at stackoverflow, though it was deleted when I tried to read and the user was deleted as well.
What do you people think?
I think the person who wrote this is one of those people who think that stackoverflow is a place to find someone else to do your homework...9 -
I recently got a project for scaling multiple wordpress sites for around 5k req/s
The biggest mistake I made is that even though it's wordpress I accepted it, fml!
Even aws load balancer gave up.5 -
i really wish Python would not have the presence it has on Machine Learning. I can think of a handful of languages that would be better suited for it and even though I don't hate Python it has a lot of things that just make me say uuuuuuugh when writing it. It al comes down from this: treating syntactic whitespace in a special way is fucking retarded.11

When reading through someone else's code, what about it made you think "Damn this is well written" or similar?
Any language - I have a bias towards PHP, C++ and C though.9 -
How hard is it for people to wait for a couple of seconds to allow the person inside the elevator to exit before they start entering in?
I feel like pushing them outside as soon as they start entering it but then again, i have to act professionally at work even though the other person is a douche.4 -
People who tell me they hate PHP, though when I ask said person whether he's used PHP all he can answer is "maybe once".
Don't hate on a language if you have barely even used it3 -
Wtf is wrong with me? Last night, I had a very hard time falling asleep even though it was 3am.
Today, I've now been laying in my bed for over 2 hours, and I'm not even close to falling asleep. It feels like my brain wants to think over every possible scenario of what could happen tomorrow...
Please send help...9 -
My dad let me use how computer and have me a VB6 book when I was like 5.

I'm a Dev
My younger brother is also a Dev
My mom is QA, though used to be maintenance dev I think2 -
Google, I can understand why you would want to translate the change logs to my language, but THIS IS NOT MY LANGUAGE! I am very curious what language it is though.15

Has anyone else noticed that the notifications screen's title is just "Notifs" even though it could've been "Notifications"?2

Ranters!
A couple of days ago I started development on a cross platform command line tool to read and post rants from terminal, but other devs were working on it too.
I haven't seen anything on here about those though, so I wondered: Is there any need for me? Aka, should I resume development?10 -
My most successful project is unsurprisingly the first and only project I ever made public. It's a very simple TweetDeck wrapper based on Electron. It was featured on some tech site and as far as I can tell quite some people actually use it. Feels kind of nice even though I'm anxious about people hating it.1
-
Just an suggestion. It has 90% possibility that this is a repost, but...
Can we have the post rant/comment to markdown? So that we can make the editor to markdown and view the rants in markdown.
Doesnt really need to be implemented though.2 -
I think subscribe to user rants is broken? It's been a week since I last saw a notification from any of the ranters I subscribe to, even though at least one of them posted a rant today that I saw.
Is it only me? Do I need to report it?19 -
I really couldn't help but laugh when I found this gem of an error message. I mean, I'd literally know just as much if it served me a blank page.
If you can't describe your own god damned error message without calling it 'generic', IT IS NOT A GOOD ERROR MESSAGE!
I'm glad they informed me it's an application error though. HERE I WAS THINKING MY TOASTER WAS THE PROBLEM.2 -
We get an email from the customer that a feature they “are using every day” is broken and it needs to be fixed ASAP. Sure, seems to be broken in current build. Run git blame to see when it stopped working. Last change may of last year. It’s been broken for almost a year and it took them until now to notice even though they “use it every day”.1

I hate that I have to have windows for my music production hobby. Does anyone know about any good DAWs for Linux?
Maybe I'll need a new audio interface as well though. Yamaha is about as bad as Nvidia when it comes to drivers for Linux.8 -
@jenochi this is for you
Due to a recent suggestion by the above-mentioned @jenochi, I though that this deserved to be a rant.

Person :"No, that won't work. How will get my stuff back?"
Me: "Nvm..."2 -
Working on my personal projects really shows me how rushed the work is were I work, and it drives me crazy.
I know my code works 100% in my current project as it is unit and e2e tested, so I can edit it until the cows come home.. at work though, different story. -
Recently I tried implementing a 2d grid you could drag (for performance I decided it would auto genetate new grid tiles)
Gotta say, I have a lot more respect for people who try to build this without a framework, I am building it using JavaScript and pixi.js
But man, drawing graphics is hard 😅
It's worth it though, performance is mad 💪3 -
Brazil is the country where companies spend the most to find out how much tax they should pay on a product. This process is so complicated that it consumes more than half of all software development professionals available. I'm one of them, and I can't stand working with this shit anymore. I have other projects, but I can never get rid of this niche that is more profitable. It sucks when even though you do what you love, you use it for such a stupid purpose, which is to calculate how much you should give to the government.10

When you have a great idea for an app, then find out that someone already done it and with the same name.
My idea is way better than the existing one though... I just need to think of another name.1 -
I always feel like a fool when I accidentally rubber duck someone - at least when I do it on purpose I've warned them first! What often happens though is I ask a question I think I need the answer to and then make the connection while they're trying to help me5

Constraint Layout is the best thing Google has ever made for responsive Android design, when it works.
Half the time it suddenly stops finding any elements I want to attach my selected one to, so it can't constrain what I want it to constrain.
A restart fixes it though...1 -
A week with flutter:
1. I like how simple it is compared to React Native
2. Same issues as react, want platform specific, good luck writing plugins. Though the upside is I can use Swift and Kotlin with it, but still mixed code is bad7 -
Legit my only answer to fixing shit code for a nursing app at work is.....
Writing more shit code. Man the dude that developed this before had 0 clue what he was doing.....and because shit grew out of control there is shitcode everywhere.
I like writing shit code though. It is good practice.
Writing shit code without knowing is one thing. You really do reach expert level when you write shit code WHILE being fully aware of it.1 -
Damn people are hostile today... I wonder why. Could it be the heat?
I suppose that this is one of the reasons why I like working at night, alone, at my desk though. No people to worry about.2 -
2007. I was four. We had a dell pc as the family computer. My dad and mom borh had laptops for themselves and their work. It ran windows xp I think and I used it to cartoonnetwork.com and play games on it. We still have the PC so that is cool. The first time I programmed though was 5 years later on my dad's laptop when he started teaching me c#.1

There are two kinds op people. People who like to help because they feel sorry for you, and people who want to help to proof themselves.
The second one is annoying as fuck. Even though i asked for help, it doesn’t mean you are better in it then me.
You should listen to what i have to say. Stuck up anti social asshole.7 -
Saw a counting variable in code. It was a necessary counting variable, so that is not what this is about.
However, this is a US based company that has a somewhat PC (no cursing) and professional cultural facade.
This variable was called "cnt". How the hell did that one not get caught in peer review? I have gotten dinged for having "possibly offensive" variable names (think Point5Hit though I have never written that as a variable name). It was funny. But I have changed it because that's just lazy.9 -
I am able to work 15 hours on my pet project then take a short walk outside and feel like a balanced man, but even just an hour on a commercial project is a massive effort even though the code is clean, the stack is modern, I'm good friends with the client and I also like the concept. The mere fact that I'm doing it for money takes the fun out of it.3
-
Seriously though.
Why use Arch. It sounds like headaches.
What is the benefit. Like, I used to have fun with
tweaking systems and so forth, until it became
not so fun when I had to actually do it to make
money, like server admin on my websites.
From the sounds of it, setting it up takes hours, none of the packages are quite ready, it takes google research and troubleshooting for common tasks, etc.
Why not say, Ubuntu, kde? Or whatever.13 -
Official Release of Meme Bot is here, Though it's a meme bot, it can be used as any image bot, since it googles the text. For better results, give proper description.
The script runs on a cron job, checking for mentions every minute, so, it will reply within 1 minute.

I've been working for two days (after work) on my blog idea...
Man I forgot how fun it is to work on your own projects, and the stuff I learn at the moment... It is insane!
I am currently a very happy developer, hopefully I can keep this up.
I still have to look into automated unit testing and code formatting checks with github though, cant wait! -
I am seeing a trend on here, where people dismiss a technology based upon their experience that they cannot use it first try, even though they clearly lack experience or knowledge about the proper usage.
Also people seemingly tend to imply self explanatory at various topics ranging from relatable broadly known experiences to small nieche opinions.
How is that? Since when do people, especially programmers, think they do not need to explain their viewpoint, even though there is not a clear indicator as to why? Stating an opinion without any backup to the claim is just a void call in the wind. Of course i know that user X thinks that Y is his or her opinion. But what good does it do when i can't relate / understand or discuss this opinion?3 -
The moment when your CEO freaks out because he can’t login and starts insulting your architecture because he thinks its a caching issue even though it is a cookie issue because his CTO changed the domain on your cookie for no reason.2

My favorite method is the .split() method in Java. It simplifies things so much for so many situations for me even though it would be trivial to write this method on my own, I still love this method!

My spouse is my project manager which is ironic since I normally seethe with anger when around project managers. It works though.4

Am thinking about giving a class on "How to waste time". You should attend it. It is not going to be free though. Otherwise, it would be a waste of my time.4

Continuing my rant from Yesterday....
As I was strolling though Walmart yesterday...
Tech Support 1: $Customer is having issues with their tablet they bought from us.
Tech Support 2: tell them to shut it off and shut it back on
Me: ❓4 -
So looking at React/Node and all the GitHub projects etc. It seems JS/Node is the current/next big language like Java, C++. Runs on everything, can build anything with it, and is well supported.
Sorta crazy thinking about it though since JS is old and used to be shit used by script kiddies...20 -

As a company director that’s just starting out down my freelance journey, I still find it so scary taking money out of the business, even though I know I have the money to replace it.
The spectre of getting my taxes wrong even though I’ve got established accountants looking out for me is insane. -
Did anyone else grow up using shitty laptops and cheap hard disks with just not enough space and now that they are adulting and have access to money, have this random, uncontrollable urge to keep buying more SSD's even though they already have more than they'll ever need or is it just me?11

Trying brave browser. So far so good. A few buts though.
Importing bookmarks, saved passwords and such works fine but you can't import stuff saved in the storage, which is a bummer.
Also, advertising it as a browser where you get paid/rewarded for viewing ads is a bit disingenuous. At a rate of 2 cents per ad (max 5 per day), it's like saying a breadcrumb is equivalent to half a slice of white bread.
Haven't been able to enable picture in picture mode, which is also a bummer.
An integrated torrent client inside the browser is kinda cool though!
That aside, it does run faster overall.8 -
Coding is my life duh... Actually, though, it showed me that with just a computer I can make anything without raw materials - websites, programs and lots of tears1

Sometimes I feel I should switch to android from web even though I don't know anything about it but just feels that it's interesting morebthen web.
But then again I have those thoughts that jack of all and king of nothing is pretty hurtful in career building. Isn't it?5 -
For years I've been saying software is "depreciated" , today I just noticed that the term is "deprecated".
Not sure either term really means what we think it does when talking about old software though.

It’s 1am, I’m pretty sure that even though I’m in my bed now I’m also standing on the stage telling a hostile community “and now with the help of tiny hacks we...” I can’t finish the sentence because the whole mob is screaming at me and the worst part of it is that I don’t care about them. Shame is an emotion. To feel shame you have to be alive, you have to have a personality. I don’t feel shame. It scares me.2

Resume question:
I have knowledge of the tools and languages used where I'm applying. But my experience is in a completely different area (still CS though).
Any thoughts how I can let the employer know that I am skilled? Even if my experience doesn't show it.6 -
ChatGPT has an "interactive speech mode" in their app so you can use just bidirectional audio to chat and it's incredible.
I had a deep and pivoting discussion on how data is stored/formatted at disk level for each database type and it responded wonderfully.
It even sounded annoyed when I was 😅
It probably will sell my voice data now though...3 -
Learning to code is like learning to write when you were younger. It can be sloppy or clean but if you keep at it it'll probably become clean. But, with these sites like code academy that accept only one solution to the problems they present it's as though you're being told that everything you're doing is wrong eventhough you get a solution to the problem in the end. It bugs me that these sites want people to code the exact same way.

I truly hate PHP because I know nothing about it. I thought writing an API would be cool and it was until PHP stopped cooperating. Why won't my API communicate with my app WTF!? It's like it's not even there even though Apache is clearly serving the page.7

Mobile phone.
With our without internet it is still one of the biggest distractions I have. I keep checking it even though there is nothing.2 -
RTFM, seriously. I'm assigned to document the git-system even though all it takes is "RTFM" and a link to the official docs. It's even the second time i do this because my last attempt at documentation got lost...2

When you are very busy and got a tight schedule but some other team complains to their boss that your changes to a shared library completely broke their work and that is a "showstopper". They say it worked before so it must be their code.
So you try to figure out what happened because you sometimes make mistakes even though you took precautions. It takes almost 3 days of your time because you dive into your commits and into their messy codebase.
Turns out the fucking thing never worked in the first place and nobody took the time to validate this. Worst thing is I found the bug with someone else even though it's not even my job to do it. I wasted my fucking time.
I swear if I was not working remote I would have started a fistfight in the office. -
This appears to be a service designed for idiots. $89 a month for ho-hum specs. What strikes me more though is that with CentOS selected, it still gives me MSSQL options. Learn to js, n00bs!7

My 2013 rMBP's battery just died at 56%, even though iStat reports that the health is still at 75%. May have to take it in to the shop for a new battery soon...5

I had the "pleasure" of working with someone who though that it would be a good idea to create random strings and check if they were in a database, to ensure they are unique. What's even better, is that this was being used for batch generation of up to 100 such strings at a time!
-
What to do if someone asks for your help with problem X, but then you figure out they originally tried to fix problem A and recursively came up with bad solutions until they got at X at which point the entire codebase overlaps responsibilities, implementations leak, concrete instances are created in controllers ignoring DI and you just can't say ANYTHING nice about it?
Also does not follow a methodology and just does whatever, thinks singletonning a database context is a good option because stuff isn't saved, says they will 'refactor later' even though it should have been done last week and just doesn't seem to get it?
I've told them that what they're doing is plain wrong and they're making it harder for themselves than it needs to be, but they just seem to not get it, even though at this point basic stuff like that shouldn't be an issue.
Posted this in rant since it became kind of a rant instead of a question6 -
Stock Android rant

Everyone here complaining about Windows updates...
Your not forced to use it at gun point.
Windows is garbage, end of story. So either stop fucking using such garbage or stop fucking complaining about it!
I get the feeling you all like complaining more than you like having a good computer though...6 -
Built a pFSense box for home with said proxy. Even though my internet connection is slow it seems fast now thanks to squids MITM https proxy and http proxy. Plus a little QoS helps. And it has so many more features than a regular router.... WTF didn't I do this sooner?4

When you have two managers and one of them is trying to screw you into a position on his team even though you have made it clear that you want nothing to do with that type of development.
I am looking for a new job now...3 -
Current boss is best boss.
Seriously though, he's a great guy. He has a lot of knowledge technology-wise, especially in electronics and will explain things to you without tiring if you don't understand them.
He lets me run my thing which is cool and letting me run too freely/not taking enough time is probably the only thing I'd criticize.
He seems to have a similar mindset to mine which makes it (most times) enjoyable to work with him. I like him personally - though I'm sometimes not sure whether he gets my somewhat weird humour. -
Came to devRant to Rant about react, And then rant about devRant. Is it just me or getting to ‘my rant collection page ‘seems like extra steps than needed? Other than that, i really like this app though :D1

Had an interview the other day for a fullstack role. They told me I'd have to whiteboard stuff, of course. No big deal.
They had me whiteboard css though. Totally off guard. Pretty sure I got it, but WTF. Is this normal?5 -
Has anyone here ever created fonts? specifically cursive fonts?
If so, comment here. I have an idea. Yes this should be collab, but not really, b/c it is just an idea.
And I need clarification on it. So, yes, technically, a question. Seriously though, font person, I'm talking to you, easy money.
(Sorry for using the word easy money, except it is apt)13 -
I signed up for a trial of some time tracking software. Apparently the company that owns it is incredibly aggressive with their sales department. They sent me 10 emails within the first week (still sending even though I unsubscribed) and have started calling me every day. What have I gotten myself into.2

New question to ask potential employers: What makes this work so difficult? is it innovative or in a challenging domain? Or is it because of a poorly documented, poorly maintained code base between multiple groups that can't agree on terminology?
Though if you ask, you should probably be more polite than I am hearing this in my head.2 -
anyone else ever focused so hard/long that they peeled an orange(mandarin) to eat, then forgot to eat it so long that it was crispy?
i mean like literally the thin skin remaining was actually crispy... this is me taking a break to remember last times i ate/etc... and hopefully not have more crispy oranges... though tbh wasnt bad10 -
Fuck OneNote. I use it at work, because I am too lazy to just download Notion, and the whole company is a Microsoft customer.
I was busy writing some pointers for a presentation just now and it decided to sync my notebook. It changed the name for some reason (maybe I changed it somewhere else, can't remember doing this though).
Fuck you Microsoft.3 -
I once used some Windows theme hack in Windows 7 to be able to get a dark background in Explorer.
As a side-effect, Microsoft Word shows me the same dark background as well for its documents even though I didn't tell it to. I didn't mind, though...
But now the fun part: When I wanted to print out the document, it prints with that same dark background... seriously, is this shit hardcoded in?! No wonder you couldn't get a proper dark theme with Windows 7!
(I hope Windows 10 full dark theme won't have this weird issue!)2 -
tl;dr: What dark theme are you using in IntelliJ?
After seeing how easy it is for my coworker to do refactoring in IntelliJ, its git integration, some Emacs-like features in it, and generally because he made me believe it's an all-in-one IDE (is that right?), I'm considering leaving Sublime for IntelliJ.
The thing that's stopping me though is that I'm not able to find a good Monokai color scheme for it. I am using Boxy Monokai theme in sublime, and it's just awesome.
What dark theme are you using in IntelliJ?12 -
Just got on a fb argument because I said something along the lines of: mfkers that throw the finger in a pic are the same mfkers that will quickly disappear from a fight
Yo, if your ass is though enough, then it is. Flipping the bird at a pic makes me think you're willing to throw hands if needed be.
Anecdotal evidence proves it ain't real3 -
Jesus fucking christ! I've been hired by this bank to improve the quality of their online banking software. Zero unit tests and I'm tasked to make it testable as much as possible.
Guess what? Almost the whole fucking codebase uses static classes everywhere!!! Good luck unit testing that.... what a bummer. It is a challenge though.2 -
Waiting for a new package to be installed on my raspberry pi takes a long time because of my poor internet connection :( But it is totally worth the long waiting time though!

When you have a bug filed for a feature you created to spec, questions it, and then they state the the bug shouldn't exist as it is "common sense" even though it's not in the spec.

Always nice when you discover that your hardware has an *ELABORATE* HARDWARE OFFLOADING ENGINE with full protocol implementation for something you spent two months writing software for...
Well, at least the current solution works like it is supposed to. Don't know that yet of the hardware implementation.
It would save 4 euro component cost though if we switch to the offloading engine -
What is the point of removing code that will literally be added back in on another story? I just don't get it. I am in the code. It took two seconds to fix it but because it is not part of the story that i am working on someone is going back and ripping it out even though the next story is to put it in. Don't fucking complain to me because we are behind on this fucking project.2

So far in 2020 the only work I’ve done is front end and even though I’ve improved (a little) It makes me sick. But today I actually get started working on backend in ASP.NET Core for the first time. I am excited.2

I bought BMW recently and the engineers who designed it did a phenomenal job. The one oddity though, there are up and down arrows on the steering wheel representing next and previous, except that down is next and up is previous. It's so counter intuitive and I wish they would standardize button interfaces or produce guidelines everyone would stick to.8
-
Every Morning I wake up with a subtle headache. It’s not as bad as with a hangover but still like a dehydration headache. I drink like 3 - 4 Liters of Water per day though so it can’t be that.
Any ideas on how to fix this? It makes getting up just even harder than it already is..26 -
I just downloaded battery monitor app to figure out why my new phones battery is draining so quickly...
The app says though it's best to charge only up to 80%.
But logically if this were true, shouldn't the manufacturer adjust for it themselves so that when Android says 100... In reality it's actually 80?15 -
Woo... A present from Google http://ai.googleblog.com/2019/02/...
Now I don't have a reason to work for Google though... Not that I could get in but...
Is it a bit ironic that my first and only native Android app ~10 years ago was to solve the same problem?1 -
my own code is confusing me so much that I can't even return what I want to return and been trying for hours
I'm going over stuff like a broken record and seems as though I'm not understanding it at all 🤷🏼♀️3 -
Alright! So this is my issue. It’s supposed to do this but it does that. Alright, see. Firstly I do this, then that. Afterwards I have this loop though ... ohhhh now I get it.
*fixes three lines of code*
Thanks! -
Don't ya just love it when someone you work with is constantly asking you to do stuff. Even though you literally ask nothing of them. Can't say no though because then they throw a gigantic 11 year old temper tantrum..1

MS Office is turning to crap. I have to use it extensively because of my job and it never fails to give me grief. Today I wasted so much time because even though excel is loading a CSV file, it still changes values (like april25 to april-25, or 1.0 to 1) without informing the user or ability to undo or disable, because it thinks it is too smart. :(1
-
Even though I like a rolling Linux install that's been working for a long time, it's always fun to set up a fresh installation. Remember back when I had more time and setting up "Linux from scratch". Then there was Gentoo. Now Arch serves that purpose. Even though there is not that much time as when I was a student it's still brings pleasure starting from a clean slate. Only setting up the things you need and keeping config files clean and a nice directory structure. Keep it simple.4

A sub company of the company I work for is about to be shut down. It makes me sad because I developed everything on the platform. All my work just gone.. at least I learned a lot about what NOT to do though

When the client gets pissed that it looks like there is no progress on their site but everything has been back-end work and front-end is only 20%.
Then they demand a refund on a holiday... in 2014... and their domain is STILL a parked page even though they were 5 days from completion in 2014. -
So I needed something to log how many volunteer hours im spending coding something for my school.... I logged 11 hours today. I have no life. Check it out though, it's called wakatime it ties into PHPStorm and everything. It really is a great "you need to go outside more" Indicator.1

Leetcode.
It doesn't matter if you've done multiple projects with different tools, languages, team sizes and requirements for ANY company / org etc.
You will feel fucking stupid while taking too long on some of these questions.
I know interview questions are mostly to test your critical thinking skills but fuck I feel so bad after 2 evenings of doing this shit.
It is addictive though...2 -
Did something happen with notifs? The app says I have 71 unread notifs, but in reality I only had 5 unreads and the rest was just old (read) stuff.
The 'comments' category is marked as if it still has some unread stuff in it, even though it doesn't.
Bug?5 -
Man using Android Studio is a love and hate situation for robotics, just hoping that it will work before competition even though half of the team is riding up my ass about everything just to make the bot work😤
-
That I take everything too serious and it keeps downing my creativity and concentration.
I simply shouldn't give a fuck and learn through failures, because that is much more effective but I got educated to blame myself for mistakes. Stupid education. Takes time to truly understand that though. -
Having a look at electron again after giving up on it months ago.
I must say, the documentation has improved a lot since then, and it looks---dare I say---intuitive to use?
The electron api demos app is surely some help, but I'm not really all that sure how much it lives up to its name. It doesn't really demonstrate anything, and it doesn't cover the whole api, just small chunks of it.
Loving the event system though!12 -
Notification icon suddenly starts showing that I have notifications to see, even though there are none. And it is same number of notifications that I had when I woke up this morning.
I'm using iOS.8 -
I want legit data on how many times your second build attempt succeeded though you made absolutely no change from the previous build and sort of hope the compiler will be merciful this time around.
It is the part of the brain that still believes in supernatural stuffs I guess.9 -
Yes, a rant
About iPhone
Not apple watch though
You can literally build a computer with far better specs with how much they are charging for it
iPhones are literally expensive PoS depencies for Apple Watches (actually tried a bunch. AppleWatch is years ahead it's competitors
Change my mind. You won't21 -
This is a good question... I really struggle to get my groove on. Starting is the worst. Once I'm in it though...

I've steered clear from react cause I thought it was complicated to learn... but it turns out it was simpler than expected. The dev environment is a mess though...
Hell yeah React! -
It would seem that "code freeze" has become a meaningless term to our systems engineering team. Sure we can sneak in another feature or eight that you felt it beneath you to negotiate on time. That you couldn't make the decision on until now, even though your job is to make these decisions so that we can stay on schedule. This is why systems is a fucking year behind.2

I understand the desire people have to use an open source driver for their graphics card, but it feels like that's not the only reason people seem averse to using nvidia's closed-source driver on linux. I have used it for years, and never had a problem, and though I have an admittedly specific use scope, I would like to know what it is that people dislike about it. What problems do you have with it?3

I've recently launched a node js package fast-freeze. It makes an object read only by converting it into series of functions. Though it is faster but looks ugly to use. Eg giveMe("server")("port").
Any suggestion to make it less ugly?3 -
I'm supposed to write a term paper about a scrappy python/sqlite3 project I put together in a day. And even though mine is the most advanced of all the student's programs (it's cocky but it's true), I feel so ashamed... It is so scrappy and useless... Now I'm supposed to pull something out of my ass, what I did or how I did it sounding all pretentious and proud. After I get my grade I'm wiping it off my disk for sure!1

Fucking hell... If I knew that PHPStorm could display the same file over 2 screens/windows, I’d have used it sooner. 😡
It is a godsend though 🙂7 -
I've been having blackouts a lot recently which kills my desktop so thinking I should buy a UPS specifically APC UPS Battery Backup & Surge Protector with USB Charger, 600VA, APC Back-UPS (BE600M1) https://amazon.com/dp/B01FWAZEIU/...
But not sure how I would maintain it/use it.
Basically it would replace the current per strip I'm using for PC and monitor?
I don't know though how long it would last for my gaming PC though. What is the 625? I need it to last at least 5 minutes so it can shutdown properly but it's a gaming desktop... So will it be enough. I don't know what the VA means... Also I have a 4K 27in monitor...
That and I'm a bit worried this thing blows up and starts a fire...16 -
I thought the weather app I was using was hacked because because it displayed Ukranian Village as my current/default location.
Somehow this zip code though is known by that...3 -
It is quite a hard pick either generally coding with friends for fun or getting my first ever program done completely by myself (and I don't mean Hello world but rather my first small 'project') . But I'd probably go with my first ever program. Even though retrospectively the code is let's say not that great, it was still an awesome learning experience to actually create sth working out of code
-
Is there a good place to post code and have people comment on the style or the logic? I'd love to start getting feedback on my code and break bad habits before they become too ingrained. Plus, our first project is a blackjack game, I'm working through it pretty well but I'm a little stuck and I think it's completely because I'm paranoid I'm not doing it well/right (even though I probably am).2

I want a devRant iPad app.
All it really needs to be is a streaming feed with the slide-out menu static on the left. I'd be happy with that.
Pretty simple, but obviously not critical. I just hope it's on the //TODO list. I'd enjoy it (especially if it supported multitasking).
But don't feel as though you should support the 12.9-inch Pro because lol fuck that monstrosity.8 -
This indicates what I often ask myself when posting a rant.. but could be used for example for feature requests, too. 😋
The song is quite horribly though.. was kind of a running gag during my studies. A friend reminded me of it a couple of days ago and my mind directly associated it with @dfox 😛3 -
Why CMake is a steaming pile of dogshit
- Doesn't echo the command lines it is running making it hard to figure out what it is doing
- Dumps a bunch of crap all ovey my directory structure. And I thought NPM was bad
- Generates 'Makefiles' but only kinda uses Make? (I think, its confusing) WTF
At this rate I wish I could use just bash scripts. At least I could figure out why a simple thing like why my compilation fails to locate an include file even though Is is clearly specified in include_dirs() directive.
Get phucked, Cmake9 -
Currently waiting in the doctor's office and the pc on the table is making so much noise... I have an itch to fiddle with it, maybe get a can of compressed air and clean it out. Though given that it's a doctor's office, not until I get gloves and a mask.
-
Writing my first code review. Even though it really is a nice review and I'm happy with the solution code, I still somehow feel like an asshole for each critique I make. Maybe it's unavoidable with code reviews / pull requests?3

Is it a good idea to switch from learning openGL to learning Vulkan now?
I was learning openGL in the past months and now that Vulkan is out I am thinking about learning that instead. I've heard that it's harder to learn though, so roughly how long do you think it would take to learn it as a openGL novice?
In openGL I have used instanced rendering with different textures, specular maps in the shader all in perspective 3D of course.3 -
I like my job, but I will happily admit there is always something better out there, though it will be hard to find, which is fine with me. To assist with this, I made a form response for recruiters:
Is it a contract?
Is the budget for the role less than XXX a year?
Is it located in a suburban place with limited or nonexistent transit access?
If any answers are yes, I am not interested.1 -
I originally played System Shock in 1994, and I remember being rather frightened by it, but I didn't complete it. I decided to give it another go, and it still creeps me the hell out, but I didn't make a mistake by reinstalling it; I quite enjoy it -- it's up there with Quarantine. Deus Ex is still my favourite, though.3

sadly, laundry is waiting for me. A good opportunity to think why my project got an error even though i checked it multiple times. hopefully i found a piece of solution in every clothes...

Is it considered greedy when you are accepting job interviews even though you decently love your current job, have decent work balance and benefits and your boss trusts you?
I kinda feel bad being curious on what other companies have to offer for my skills but I don't necessarily plan to accept any new offer.4 -
This is how my macbook keybboard writes the letter "b" it’s not happening all the time though, sometimes it outputs b and and other times bb, wtf I only pressed it once. And it's happening randomly, fuck this shit, I cant even take it to apple customer service and leave it there for a week or more. I guess I'm living with it and don't bbother fixing it. fuck b errr6

Lisp is such a cool language, and I feel like because functional programming is becoming so popular, Lisp could end up the go-to language because it's so versatile and, though there are many parens, it's friendlier at first glance than Haskell. (And there are so many libraries for it, omg)6
-
I hate deploying this project, it's just nerve wracking. I started it when I was a newbie to web stuff so I didn't know shit. Now it's just a big project with no unit tests, I test it all by hand.
It looks professional though, but the underlying code is just a mess.5 -
Trying to install Linux off of a USB drive when motherboard flips put during boot mode and boots back into windows saying that it is not secure. Even though I've tested this drive and installed Linux on other computers. ugh1

It is surprisingly difficult to make two things equally high in css (without putting height in pixels). Like two columns of a parent div. You can't use "height: 100%;" out of the box like you can with width.
Why though? I understand that height is more difficult that width. But the parent element has a height. Not by me, but the browser figures it out. So why can't something inside it be 100 % of it. Beats me.
Well at least it works now. -
I've though about this off and on but we all know 1st and 3rd party companies. What about 2nd companies though? I mean think about it Apple is the first party company and Mojang is the third party company. What about the second company though? I know I know I just could look it up on Google but eh!3
-
Did some webdesign, not sure yet of how I want to continue, navbar is done & responsive, so that's something. The hero banner looks kinda empty though... What do you folks think of it ?5

When you're having such a shitty day that you're investigating why something is (obviously) wrong and after ages you find a bug that you just don't even want to admit you made, but then you realise that, even though that's there and would fit the weird behaviour, you realise there's actually a safeguard that, while it doesn't correct for the issue properly, it at least prevents the whole thing from going apeshit...
Oh gods please show me why this is behaving so wrong even though the massive bug is kind of cancelled out.... -
Well fuck you too windows, my disk is where it is suposed to be, even though the controller is broken. Even linux can still find it. Although it takes a while to load the actual transfer. Recovery of terrabites takes ages4
-
How many of you guys have an actual development life cycle at work (documenting every step, officially closing out of design, implementation, testing, etc)?
My place has a pretty stringent cycle. It is usually useful, but can occasionally just feel like paper pushing. It seems, though, that a lot of devs on here just sit down and start typing until someone says stop?4 -
Ran a test today. It was comparing whether a the reducer returned the correct state when a type and list is passed to it. The test failed. But something very curious happened. I am using webstorm and so the IDE told me 'click to see differences'. I did and the message at the top read as follows "The 2 lists are identical" (The expected and actual result). So my test worked but it didn't work. What is life!? I finally got it working though😕1
-
So I have spent some time playing with Python, but as I understand it JavaScript is the language I should learn first?
I'm a fully fledged VBA Developer of 10+ years btw
Thought I better learn a useful language now though 😂4 -
Though JS is a terrible language( as it's absolutely insane ), why do developers love it and why is it taking over the programming world?
JS is just like the C for web, but a bit weird.13 -
Quick FAQ for Wroclaw (Wroclove :D) for collaborators from around the world
Poland is in Central Europe, not Eastern (we use Central European Standard Time even). This because Russia is also partially in Europe (not European Union though).
Breslau is Pre-WW2 name for current Wroclaw in Lower Silesia. Don't use it here as it immediately brings bad emotions into the talk and it is not what you want :) Leave nazis in the past.17 -
Any thoughts on Flutter ? I'm considering using it, but from what I've seen its use case is for performance, compared to other more mature frameworks like phonegap.
Flutter looks way easier to use though.
Anyone have experience with these ? -
I just had the weirdest feeling where the word "response" completely lost all meaning to me.
I googled it, and apparently this is called semantic satiation.
Huh, never happened to me before.. I hope the memory of the word response returns to me because though I'm not sure why I feel like it's important.3 -
It is now 5PM!!! Weekend begins!!!
Now why do I feel like I need a weekend after only working 3 days this week though...1 -
Have you ever loved someone so badly that you cant forget about it even though she/he is retarded AF also no time to cringe anymore because you gotta complete this project at work before end of this weekend?2
-
! Rant
How do you guys keep from procrastinating?
When at work, I do my job, everything is well, even though sometimes I just stare into the distance for 5 minutes but it isn't hindering me. However, personal projects, studying etc... I just can't seem to keep myself focused...
Any tips? Any advice?2 -
Almost two decades of working with JavaScript, and I just got caught out by the most stupid of things..
Did you know that `["ping"] == "ping"` is `true`, whereas `["ping"] === "ping"` is `false`...? 🤔 I did, once upon a time, long ago. Apparently I forgot about it though.
Seriously, fuck you JS.. with all of the internet's 10 foot rusty barge poles.12 -
Has anyone else noticed that Inc.com article titles are extremely clickbaity? Seriously though!
Given that, I've built Wormbait for node, it "learns" from 1040 Inc.com titles and predicts if a title is clickbait or not. `npm install -g wormbait` and launch with 'wormbait "is this clickbait"'1 -
My family mostly get it because my uncle is a solution architect. They probably still dont realise just how complex it can be though.
-
If a project's structure is shit, well of course, let's continue using it because "it is known". Doing it any other way "will add complexity".
That I wasted three days making my working code adhere to the clusterfuck of a structure, nevermind that. Let's continue. And yes, colleagues do agree that the structure is shit, though let's improve it ... later.
Or in other words: Suck it up, we always have done it this way. Fuck you and your ill-advised attempts of trying to improve it. -
When the documentation suggests you use composer to install swiftmailer so I can use sendgrid.
Even though I can install composer as an extension and sendgrid is integrated within the portal it's down to me to work out the azure cli or is it a powershell cli or is it bash?
Echo gives kudu error, oh well if there's kudu why am I using composer?
Grrr azure you don't make it easy. -
What about Manjaro Linux? How many of you guys actually used this distribution? I did installed this distro on my pc. Everything's neat. Battery consumption is lower than other distro I've used before. However I'm facing an unusual behavior though. My laptops fan is making more noise than ever before. No heavy applications running. As soon as I hit the power button it seems like a fucking airplane is starting. Lmao. Is it related to os or something else?6
-
I'm a lazy piece of shit that feels backend code is more important than frontend code (it kinda is though...). But this resulted in me using bootstrap and jQuery in just about every project so I did not have to put effort into it. So this year, I'll ditch them. They've served me well, but they are so bloated and also fuck up your HTML. Removing bootstrap and jQuery for existing projects is gonna be a pain, but I'll try...7
-
Ok so my newest project is launching tonight and I feel very anxious, even though I tested everything beforehand. Is it normal?4
-
Static Vision.
Exactly what you think it is. But maybe lighter than that.
Basically if I unfocus my eyes every so slightly, I can see what looks like really fast drizzling rain, except it looks like light, faintly though. Like I kind of have to look for it, but it's there. Sometimes really obvious, sometimes not.
It's as though being in front of a monitor too much fucked up my eyes, or something.
More pronounced if I've been awake coding for maybe more than a day...
Just me? or anyone else?
Kind of caused me problems a few times, thinking it was something else....
I really want to know if anyone else has experienced this.5 -
What I own a car?!?! Where can I claim it?
Oh wait, it's probably another scam call...
The amount of detail in this one is pretty amazing though... Most just call and hang-up.2 -
The easiest way for me to get unstuck when writing a program is usually to talk to someone in the business about my problem. If I can explain what I am doing to someone else it helps me better understand where I might be going wrong. It especially helps if I am speaking to someone who is not technical because I have to explain everything without glazing over the general coding stuff.
I am sure it bores the hell out of them though.1 -
Though I don't use vim, but why all the hate when it is a widely used software?
https://hackaday.com/2019/04/...7 -
Bought a cheap coffee maker a few weeks ago (only 22 bucks). Worked just fine.
Now it stopped working and I debugged it, the thermal fuse is blown and the warranty is gone too..
A small price to pay for knowing what the problem is though 😅2 -
What is everyone's opinion on F-Droid? Just discovered it (though the site seems to be down at the time of writing this) and I want to see if it's as good as it sounds.2
-
Nothing says asshole like a guy who won't approve your MR even though the feature is working but they prefer implementing it using their preferred approach.
Different coding styles for different folks. What matters is that the approach used is efficient, working and tested. But oh no, you have to write the code exactly how they want it.
Good thing we're free to merge our own MR when the reviewer takes more than two days to merge it.4 -
Create new possibilities in the digital world, moving "everything" into the digital world, creating new solutions as a service. A more connected world. Find a problem even though it is small and make it as a service, changing lives for the better.
-
So I just got something to work the way I wanted it to as a start. But I already don’t like the result and want to change it, even though this is how I planned it to be.4
-
Why is perl soo notorious? and why do people hate it. Like I'm a networking guy and sys admin and I like to write scripts and it's really handy. Though it annoys sometimes but it still helps.5
-
Can I just assume they meant experience instead of "innovation" ?
And wtf is "captivate dorm websites" 😂
For context am job hunting and this is a reply from a company. It seems to me though that their English is weaker then my Spanish (my 4th language). Jokes.10 -
"How about we don't do it this way because I have undone what you did and have redone it in a stupid way and if we have to do it the correct way we'll have to undo MY work, so let's just keep it like it is, ok?"
Really? And one of your arguments is "because it's working now", bitch it was working before, you just didn't read my code.
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt though, I don't think you did this on purpose, you were tired yesterday, I get it. But still, could've talked to me before deleting all my code.
I'm not that mad though, I got paid the same and still found a nice pattern I can use on my own future projects, it just won't be used at work. -
So I recently installed Arch Linux... I don't get it. I got one little error... easy "fix" though :/ The minimum is up in less than half an hour... then maybe installing a desktop environment (I like MATE)... and... that's it.
What's the big thing I missed?
Is it only because "da user has da force" and "da user is da control master"?
Is it only that the user (in this case me, myself and I) is responsible for every fckin package, update whatever?
I'm sorry for my stupidity but... I'm not sorry for my intelligence 🧠 🤪
It didn't feel special in any way :(
but was a bit interesting 🤔7 -
Is it fair that oss auhtors/maintainers are not being contributed to by for-profit companies that rely on their products even though the licence allows?2
-
When you get told by the company that they don't feel like running your product anymore even though it is profitable and so they are fitting you in the middle of a pandemic.
-
Existing projects, fair enough, but why you'd start a new Java project these days and *not* use Lombok is beyond me. The amount of boilerplate cut down is staggering. Some people still seem to hate it though - the mere mention of the word sends them into tremors.
(also, in b4 the predictable smartarses come in with "why you'd use Java these days at all is beyond me" 😉)2 -
DigitalOcean, really just because of the pricing. I will say though that kubernetes in Google cloud is much better than what DO offers, so if cost wasn't an issue I'd probably prefer it
-
Had to code review a line of java with this code a while back: ServiceService.isProductProduct. Funny thing is that even though it's obviously stupid, it was in accordance with the coding standard and I couldn't really object to it (._.)
-
Coding made me who I am now. I have a much more organized mind and critical though. I have some new skills that are really useful when it comes to job hunting. I'm proud to do what I do, even if it's not that much. I love learning, coding just fits my style.
I am grateful that I started doing it, there's one big downside to coding though. We all know what it is: USERS!
Going back to drinking some coffee. Oh yea, that's how coding changed my life ;) -
It should be illegal to have a 12 year old documentation for an c++ API... even though it's my fault I suck at c++ ...
Bluesoleil , the only Bluetooth you are giving me is a rather unpleasant story.. -
How is complaining about npm install taking forever still a thing? I reinstalled my whole npm folder over cellular the other day while talking shit over coffee... relatively quick as fuck.
In saying that though, it should definitely only pull necessary requirements to run the project not every fucking thing. -
New crm system is a gem. Teaching people to use it is just so easy. Fixing and finding all the problems though... glad for the automations being done by colleuge 👍
-
If we are able to use our cars for 20 years, shouldn't smartphones and web browsers be the same way?
Even though it is better to update software, old versions should not be excluded because otherwise a digital dark age comes closer.14 -
Is it hard to write a kernel module to expose information to usee space ? I need smartctls abilitytl to specify sata being transported over. USB cable to a sata drive to pull Information like make model serial but it requires root and lsblk doesn't have the functionality to grab info on the device on the other end of the usb to sata cable
There is another way though right ?4 -
Hopefully the Google cover I ordered if worth it and won't be slippery like the Pixel 6 Pro's edges...
Weather was nice outside though cold but figured would take it out for some real world testing, vs the 4a 5g it's replacing...
Well taking it out of my pocket and holding it was scary cuz it's slippery as fuck... The cold probably made it worse.
On the other hand the 4a was fine since it has a TPU case...
I think though I'm gonna get a tempered glass screen protector after all...
Picture is from 4a3 -
spotify webplayer you're a piece of shit (ublock origin is bae for helping block ads though) that can't recognize i'm online, this is why i'm going back to youtube and searching for random songs i want to listen to
your help articles are also a piece of shit
i can't afford (don't want to pay) premium so i ain't paying for that shit either
if i had the skills and an offer for spotify i'd still take it though4 -
Why is it always the case when you give your cide to QA they find more bugs than you? Even though developers write test cases, why can't we catch them all?4
-
I've been using Firefox mobile for years and still cannot save a page as HTML
YOU ARE A F*CKING WEB BROWSER! CAN'T YOU JUST LET ME SAVE IT AS HTML! WHERE IS MY SAVE-AS BUTTON?
no problems with PC version though
*sigh* I hate it, but I'm leaving firefox mobile for Chrome2 -
I am thinking about leaving my job cause even though the work life balance is amazing and team is great, it doesn’t pay as much as tech companies around where I live (HCOL) and I feel like a terrible person for feeling that way.2
-
I like iOS human interface design much more than the Android's material design, though I am an Android user. It has some unimportant design components IMO. I feel that the default action bar title is too big. Also that floating action button is weird sometimes. It hides some important portion of the contents in poorly designed apps.
-
curse you Firefox!!
Strangle yourself and die in a corner...........
For the longest time, a div was not centered vertically in Firefox even though it worked perfectly fine in Chrome and Edge......
Set parent height (who is using flex) to 1% and boom, it works now as expected.....
WTF!1 -
Friends:
They want you to listen but they never give a shit about what you're talking themselves. This is why I have quit most of my friendships and practically replaced them with devrant, not sure if it was a good idea in the long run though...2 -
Brush up on languages/technologies the company is using/what the job post is for. Say what u like/dislike about those technologies. Most importantly, know that even though you will have many bad days, it only takes 1 good day for none of those to matter!!

Please test this web tchat application that i coded from scratch using HTML/CSS/JS/PHP/AJAX. and give me your feedback. You can leave the feedback here or on that platform itself
(It is not live though, you need to press a refresh button to be able to see content update)
Here is the link

My Snowflake Tor extension is automatically off every time I start Chrome. I have to turn it off and on for it to activate.
Works perfectly fine on Firefox though.
😕 -
Ok, long shot here. I'm doing a POC using a headless browser (Seleium/PhantomJS (C#)) and it is kicking my tail. Sometimes things work and then they don't. My login code is something like:
private IWebDriver _driver = new PhantomJSDriver();
_driver.Navigate().GoToUrl(LoginURL);
_driver.FindElement(By.Name("txtUser")).SendKeys(UserName);
_driver.FindElement(By.Name("txtPass")).SendKeys(Password);
_driver.FindElement(By.TagName("button")).Click();
and it doesn't find it even though it in in _driver.PageSource.
All the SO stuff is from 2013 and I’ve tried many, many, four days worth of many By.XPath, By.Id, By.Name combinations and it just doesn’t work.3 -
I'm doing a code review and, it's not unheard of to have lowercase SQL im our codebase even though most of it is uppercase. For this reason I decided to let the lowercase SQL slide even though it makes me cringe so much... That is, until I came to one procedure that was uppercase and in this revision it is lowercase :O I want to die a gruesome way which would be very nice compared to this :O
-
Uh... What? This is for Live Transcribe... Why would I want to hide it?
Interestingly though, I now can't uninstall it... Maybe it became a system app with the last upgrade (Pixel phone)3 -
Damn I hate Reader. Extremely counter intuitive interface, slow as hell, and bloated. Not sure if reader is common though. We use it in our uni (in Germany) for tutorials.
-
I got to a point where I have a multi-level recursive promises within loops and my mental map is by far not enough to process this. I wish there were some visualisation tools for this - though I don't even know how it could look like. All I know is that at some point I'm returning a wrong promise and the recursion is not correctly handled.7
-
I hate it when chasing deadline week is over, I slept so little and I can't sleep even though I am tired af
-
I love the feeling of producing the design specifications to a client, who is complaining that a feature doesn't work the way he expected. Even though you highlighted that it would be combersome to use before development.
-
Would it be really bad if I just straight out asked my boss if I'm the most Senior person on the team?
I'm the youngest of all Senior Devs on the team... Though actually I just turned 30... Today...
Maybe this is another one of those moments triggered by my subconscience...3 -
What do you think, is this bad practise?
boolean isNumber = true;
try {
Integer.parseInt(somestring);
} catch (NumberFormattingException e) {
isNumber = false;
}
Or is it better to create a method to check, even though I only use it at one place in 700 lines of code?6 -
Microsoft Teams login says password is incorrect then and for a captcha
I type it again but fails...
I'm like wtf... Could it be the captcha...
Which I entered in all lowercase
It doesn't say the captcha is case sensitive though..
Next few times it gives me captchas with k... Teehee me like 5 tries to login
Are we trying to verify passwords/humanness or whether I can somehow tell the difference between K and k?1 -
I made an Android app that has Root permissions but when I upgraded from 9 to 10, the OS wouldn't allow it to be installed. All my ..... Just fuck and fill it out and non-root apps were fine though.
Anyone know when changed and how the new way of getting root is?2 -
I never did get that break I wanted. Though, I did get off incident tickets.
Has been replaced with project after project though, with the emphasis being on "getting it over the wall", so as you can imagine. There is a pile of tech debt that's just being ignored. It'll blow up in production one day.
It's not all doom and gloom though. I've gotten the opportunity to write a few things, from scratch that are separate from the rest of our products. Nothing nicer than a clean slate, not built upon a steaming pile. -
I just had a long talk with Character.ai; and well what can I say. Holy crappy crapping crap...
Is it perfect? No.
Is it above the comprehensive speech level that I though would be ever possible in my lifetime if I got asked about it just 1 or 2 years ago? Yes
Either that, or it is fake and provides replies from actual humans -
My teacher just saied that C# naming conventions wan't use to always put brackets on our if statements even though their is only one line next to it.
Where did she get this from ? 😅10 -
I just thought of a potential webapp ideas while talking a shower. Still need to give it some thought but wondering how best to built it out? Sorta like a message board/kiva/change.org
I'm thinking #1 is backend + REST api. Then just create a webapp using React Native so it can be used mobile and browser?
Probably will build the first prototype though using either C# just to test the APIs...
But I guess how do you break a project up. Do you build backend first or do it feature by feature (both backend and frontend)?
And well what about hosting? Do need to decide now like AWS/Heroku... Or can I just build on local? Need a db though...1
