Sometimes when I'm writing Javascript I want to throw up my hands and say "this is bullshit!" but I can never remember what "this" refers to
#oldbutgold10 -
*This morning*
HR Lady: we saw your profile and we think it fits what we're looking for, I just need to know what you use for front-end programming
Me: I use ReactJs, AngularJs and for backend NodeJs
HR Lady: Hmm, so you don't use Javascript
Me: ... (unhandled exception in my head)
Me: M'am everything I mentioned is using Javascript
HR Lady: oh! ok.9 -
Our dev team got a new manager. On our first face 2 face meeting:
Manager: So, what technology are we using for web apps?
Me: TypeScript.
Manager: What is TypeScript?
Me: It's a superset of JavaScript.
Manager: Oh I know JavaScript, it's the latest version of Java, right?
Me thinking: He is joking. He tries to be the fun guy. Everyone knows the Java-JavaScript, ham-hamster joke.
Me later, also thinking: No he is not joking. Oh God, this is the end. We are all f*cked!8 -
Random Guy: So you wrote all this in Java?
Me: JavaScript
Random Guy: Yea. What i said. It's the same!
Me: *triggered*11 -
Person: HTML is a programming language
Me: No it's not
Person: Yes it is it can compute things
Me: No it can't, and what do you mean?
Person: Have you ever heard of a script tag
Me: That's not fucking HTML that's JavaScript.15 -
Job opening tells us that they want someone who knows:
C, C++, C#, Java, VB, PHP, HTML, Javascript, MySql, Postgree, windows, Linux, Mac OS, a degree in computer science and a few years of experience.
What you'll actually do in most of those jobs: Deal with Excel spreadsheets.10 -
Took an interview today.
Me - What do you think JavaScript is interpreted or compiled.
Guy(5+ years of UI exp) - It's neither of them. It just runs on browser.
At that moment I slowly started fading away into a black hole for the absolute peace and embrace death.15 -
Just got asked "How much experience do you have with the current JavaScript standards? I'm talking ES6 and ES7" in an interview with what I assumed were technical people.
I chuckled and said "I'm comfortable with ES8" as a joke but everyone just nodded and moved on..7 -
I hate everybody who says JavaScript is the best language because of loose typing and its easy to learn, YES OF COURSE IT IS EASY!
ITS FUCKING JAVASCRIPT! IT WAS MEANT TO BE EASY! AND THEN SOME ASSHOLE CAME ALONG, CREATED NODE AND THOUGHT THAT IT WAS A GOOD IDEA!
NOW WE HAVE TO DEAL WITH THIS SHIT EVERYWHERE BECAUSE PEOPLE WHO WROTE CODE FOR UX NOW THINK THEY KNOW WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN ON THE SERVERSIDE!!
GOD FUCKING DAMNIT I HATE THIS ANALTOY OF A LANGUAGE.
YOU THINK JAVASCRIPT IS THE BEST?! DO YOU REALLY??!!! OH YEAH!?!
WELL FUCK YOU AND GO TO HELL, YOU ARE NOT A DEVELOPER IN MY EYES, GO HOME KIDDO, LEARN C OR ASM OR HOW A FUCKING COMPUTER ACTUALLY WORKS!!
AND THEN TELL ME AGAIN JAVASCRIPT IS A WELL DESIGNED AND PROPER LANGUAGE!!
I'M OUT!32 -

Criteria : programming language on left , analog on right15 -
This one tops the pile for best ... err worst security feature.
<script type = "text/JavaScript">
If( userType != "admin" )
window.location.href = "http://www.example.com";
</script>
What could possibly go wrong?2 -
Even JavaScript doesn't misbehave when a semicolon is missing. What the hell does CSS think of itself?9
-
I once had Javascript and jQuery on the same line in my resume (no longer the case).
Was told I clearly didn't know what I was talking about because "Javascript and jQuery are two completely different languages"7 -
Me teaching a co-worker programming.
Him:"So what exactly is the difference between Java and JavaScript?"
Me:"About the same as the difference between cars and carpets."
Thank you guys for teaching me how to answer that.2 -
What a nice fucking tutorial.
Clicked an articles which says How to Implement X feature in Vanilla JavaScript.
They used a vanilla javascript library.
What a fucking idiot.7 -
JavaScript is like lego, you can build almost anything with it. But if you don't know what you're doing, the result will be just a nonsensical bunch of fragments.4
-
Here's how a client does "double murder"
-----------------------------
Client to designer: So you can make it run on IE 6,7,8 right?
---------------------------------
Turns to a web Dev who just mastered Node, React, angular: What if user disables JavaScript? It'll still work right?5 -
Yes, you fucking retards, I will read this article about logging in NodeJS when the cover photo
- Isn't JavaScript
- Isn't about logging
You really seem to know what you're talking about!14 -
What a wonderful language JavaScript is. It's the only language where "(+(+!+[]+[+!+[]]+(!![]+[])[!+[]+!+[]+!+[]]+[!+[]+!+[]]+[+[]])+[])[+!+[]]" is equal to just simple "." character.6
-
while we were in the car...
mom: so what are u doing in your new job? you code in java?
me: no, i code in javascript, html, css and php..
mom: so thats java. how nice.
me: no, its javaSCRIPT.
mom: theyre still the same.
me: java and javascript are not the same
mom: but most people use java so why dont u just do it in java?
me: thats what ive been asking myself too in the past few weeks, why did i even accept this job3 -
Hey, thanks for teaching me JavaScript and HTML. I almost feel like a web developer now.
What about the REST?4 -
Did an interview this morning. Candidate had JavaScript on their resume but was mostly backend. Called themselves "senior" after 3.5 years of doing CMS upgrades and no coding.
Since JavaScript was on the resume I asked "what is the difference between == and === in JavaScript?" candidate completely failed.
Please offshore devs, don't put tech on your resume if you can't answer the most basic of questions. Don't call yourself senior when you've never even coded anything from scratch yourself.20 -
Real story at a screening interview:
Me(interviewer): how do you convert a string into a number in Javascript?
Candidate: what do you mean?
Me: (writes "123" -> 123 on paper) How do you convert "123" to 123 in JS?
Candidate: (starts writing program on paper)
str.replace(/\"/g, '"")
mind==blown!!12 -
Me - I want to work on Java.
Boss - you are working on Java right?
Me - no, just Angular JS
Boss - yes it's the same right... Angular Js, JavaScript, java
Me - (hmmmm, what if I had just said angular, would he assume I was doing geometry?) -
Javascript makes me want to flip
the table and say "Fuck this shit", but
I can never be sure what "this" refers
to.5 -
What do you call it when you type a script? A TypeScript. Then you spill coffee on it...
now it's a JavaScript.5 -
so heres to all the fucking programming teachers who use incorrectly terminology when explaining shit. now i gotta go tell my friend that he should ignore what the teacher said and ill tell her how to myself. also fuck javascript and code.org's terrible implementation of an environment for it.4
-
I learnt programming by making cheats for games and reverse engineering them. It was a fun experience as it wasn't always easy to start with C++ and assembly but it was definitely worth it. Though when you come from a low level language such as C++, looking at highly abstract languages such as Javascript makes everything feel wrong in Javascript, especially when it comes to types and how you can just switch types in the middle of the code :D. But it also gives you an understanding of how Javascript could be implemented, what the engine is doing in the background when you create an object etc..
-
The amount of much political correctness in the dev community just pisses me off sometimes.
I've watched "Use the right tool / language for the job" has become *THE* excuse for shitty tools and languages.
Case in point -- JavaScript. If you want to make a website that interacts with the end user, the right tool is JavaScript. But that's because IT'S THE ONLY TOOL. Does that make it a *good* tool?
HELL NO.
/midranttimeout
Brendan Eich, I forgive you. You had 10 days and a corporation on your case.
That's not saying JavaScript doesn't have some good things in it. It does. But "Javascript the good parts" is a fucking thin book.
Sure, some amazing things have been written in JavaScript. Great communities have coalesced around this cancer.
BUT THATS IN SPITE OF JAVASCRIPT, NOT BECAUSE OF IT. AS A LANGAUGE IT'S STILL A STEAMING PILE OF DOGSHIT.
A master can draw great art with a shitty piece of charcoal. That doesn't make charcoal THE BEST DRAWING TOOL EVARRR. It's just a testament to the master's craft.
If you started your programming journey with JavaScript, do expand your horizons.
Break free from Stockholm's syndrome.
Discard your cognitive dissonance.
See JavaScript for what it is -- a shitty language everyone was forced to use.
PS: Don't even get me started on Java ...24 -
Seriously, wtf is with the new "make-everything-in-javascript" thing?
JavaScript is a terrible language. The type safety, or rather lack of it, gives me nightmares about debugging. The standards are always different. It's way too flexible. Ugh.
I'm tired of all the awesome services that I'd love to use being centralized over Node and JS. I don't want to use your stupid fucking language. Who does?
Also what happened to that dart thing that was supposed to replace JS?11 -
So my colleague today was writing some javascript to multiple numbers, and he was getting very frustrated after a while trying to debug the code. the problem was he wrote the following:
AxB
but what he actually meant is
A*B
So yea @_@ ...4 -
Team: Qt doesn’t let us build the UX we have in mind. Web is the future.
Me: what do you guys recommend ?
Team: Electron! We vote for Electron!
Me: Alright, who know JavaScript here?
Team: ...9 -
Javascript! What a fucking horrible language it is.
I just wonder why this fucking language became this popular nowadays just performance is not a good reason to use this fucking language everywhere.14 -
As a Java guy starting to learn about JavaScript I have one question.
WHY ARE THERE 20,000 VERSIONS OF JAVASCRIPT???! WHAT MAD GOD APPROVED OF THIS AND HOW DO WE KILL HIM?
...I don't actually think it's that bad of a language though. :^)13 -
I don't know what it is but, isnit just me or does anyone else just find writing JavaScript really fun?
No... Just me? Ok cool14 -
Over the past few years I've tried to start learning JavaScript, only to become annoyed and move on. In my latest effort, I finally hit that "aha!" milestone. Turns out that the tutorial books and videos everybody said we're the ideal way to learn weren't so ideal for me. What ended up working:
1. Find a project tutorial.
2. Understand maybe 5% of what I'm doing.
3. Alter the project, ultimately breaking it.
4. Spend the few hours Googling.
5. Scrap it.
6. Redo it, exactly the same. It works this time.
7. Bask in my glory. For I am a JavaScript master.
I'll get there eventually. I think.5 -
!rant
When people listen to a complete story and then ask who the villian was..
DEVS : It's like reading JavaScript and then asking what is "this"2 -
I like how I transitioned from learning Java to Javascript because I thought they were related in sone way.
When my teacher first introduced Javascript, he told us this is NOT your grandfather's javascript. Next thing he told us was 'What is this?' My seatmate and I looked at each other perplexed. My teacher once again said 'What IS this?'. It turns out we needed to first learn about the context of 'this' -_-
That moment when you discover Java was a lie o_o3 -
Drinking is all fun and games until you need to come in to work next morning." The fuck is a JavaScript" is what my brain is at the moment.7

GitHub
This repo contains the following languages:
- PHP 58%
- HTML 34%
- Javascript 5%
- CSS 2%
- Ruby 0.6%
- Hack 0.3%
- NASL 0.1%
The last 3 are not in this repo.
Don't fear about AI taking our jobs, it still can't identify what languages it's looking at.18 -

A kid in highschool asked what are the similarities between Java and Javascript. I told him:
"Java is to JavaScript what Car is to Carpet."6 -
I saw an article saying, What Programming Language Should I Learn First? 2017
It suggested, JavaScript!
😏 hmmm....
What do you think, yes or no?

My department boss
Boss: Explain to me what your working on.
Me: Just this thing in JavaScript.
Boss: Whats JavaScript ?

Teaching JavaScript to a master of classical programming (only uses C++, Python, Ruby, etc.). Here are the results:

Everyday I see on DevRant people hating Java, PHP, JavaScript, .NET, C++, C#... Then what do you like ??26
-
Everyone says "don't lie, don't bluff", but all those years ago I put my foot in the door and got my first ever dev job by pretending I knew what JavaScript was. It all worked out in the end.2
-
I don't know if it's the new generation of programmers or what but it irritates me how people recommend JavaScript/Node for solving almost any type of problem these days. JavaScript is nice, but come on...12
-
It’s almost 2019 and I still get called by recruiters offering java gigs cause they read JavaScript on my profile 😶

So started job hunting and stumbled upon this
1. Skill required in PHP, Laravel, CakePHP, Wordpress, Opencart.
2. Bootstrap, CSS3 and HTML5 experience preferred.
3. JQuery, Vue.js, Angular.js, JavaScript, AJAX, HTML experience highly preferred.
and will pay 8000Rs/Month (112.88 USD)
Do they even know what they want? and at what cost they want to hire?15 -
Why do people like non typed languages like php or javascript? Besides from a giant pile of possible security problems what do you get out of it?27
-
At many places, first programming course is Python or JavaScript. Our university first teaches C. I feel its a great language to build up programming skills. Tough then formers and that's what makes it more beneficial.10
-
You know what I realized something. And im gonna brag about it. I taught myself laravel, vue, JavaScript, basic Unix server admin stuff and more all without every asking a single question on a forum.
Basically out of laziness, and impatience, though.
Still, go me.4 -
“I need one fullstack engineer”
“Ok, what exactly do you need?”
“Javascript, Nodejs, C/C++, CUDA, Andible, RabbitMQ. Oh, and I need him/her now until end of February”
Don’t we all just love these kind of discussions?1 -
Created a variable in the middle of a rant with JavaScript and named it as an acronym for "mother fucker", it actually worked what I tried to do with it... "mother fucker" is in production now2
-
I love to write vanilla JavaScript questions, hand them to full stack devs during and interview and watch them struggle trying to explain what it’s doing. 😈16
-
I friend of mine was looking for an internship. I asked him what he wanted to do, he said frontend. I said do you know JavaScript. He said that's a long name I like to just call it Java.1

What were your #FirstSevenLanguages? Mine were:
- C++ 😮
- Python 😊
- Ruby 😉
- Java 🙃
- PHP (ugh that was painful) 😢
- Javascript 😍

Just JavaScript things:

Node: Will you go out on a date with me ?
JavaScript: Where?
Node: Outside the browser.
JavaScript and Node lived together happily ever after.

Node: What is wrong with you? Why don’t you let me EXPRESS my feeling?
JavaScript: Stop overREACTing.
Node: You never want to understand my point of Vue.14 -
Friend learning typescript: JavaScript is easy, you do exactly opposite of what you did in java. Typescript is a half baked mess.

First post, woo!
So I just decided to create a simple coming soon page, slowly getting to grips with javascript finally (I think) but I like just diving into the code and see what comes out at the end of it.

interviewee : *Appeared for JavaScript interview, in shorts with messy hair *
interviewer : why are you like this *with disgust feeling*
interviewee : I exactly don't know what this refers to
interviewer : can we talk about package2 -
Let's create mentally what should never be, something with so ridiculously bad performance, even the devil wouldn't let someone use it.
My idea: a JVM emulator written in JavaScript.
What can you come up with?7 -
What was the most stupid thing interview ever do to you?
My side of story. He (interviewer, also a developer) try to convince me that JavaScript and Java are the same thing. Which we all know that is not...
He said "I can't hire someone who don't know basic of computer science , this is basic that JavaScript is from Java"
(Isn't ecmascript or something?)
Saying JavaScript is From Java is a wrong statement. There are differences between having a DICK and Being a DICK.5 -
When someone asks you what programming language they should learn, don't tell them the one you prefer.
Instead, ask them what area they plan to focus on, like,
Web frontend: javascript
Web backend: javascript
Mobile apps: javascript
Games: javascript
AI: javascript6 -
Need to learn JavaScript.
My question is: What good books/websites/ youtubers etc are out there that have good explanations.
Thx in advance.64 -
I think JavaScript is an addictive language... That is the reason it is most used language. It's like humanity never liked strict things at all 😋... What do ya think?5
-
What if we were in an alternate universe where Java was a scripting language and therefore was the same as JavaScript, and all non-programmers thought they were different.2
-
"fullstackcircus! he doesn't know what he's doing!"
how's that pure HTML / javascript monstrosity you've built going for you? can you repeat it for any site you need?
gatsby FTW
get rekt scrubs -
"So, coder huh. What languages do you use? HTML, CSS, JavaScript? That type of stuff?"
"No. I use React. You see... with hooks... "
"Well, can you change some of the CSS on my website for me?"
"Is it React?"6 -
Attended a webinar today, about "modern javascript". Missed half of it due to technical difficulties, the main issue being that they used Flash for the webinar...Yes, Flash! What a very modern technology to use for a webinar with the word "modern" in it...Not!3

It's computer science college, and yet :
Them : ... so thats how my project goes ! it's fun!
Me : whoa that's cool, do you use javascript?
Them : ... umm
Me : ...I suppose??
Them : uh, i use node and bulma actually.
WHAT THE FUCK?11 -
I am yet to see a javascript tutorial which explains what I'm looking for without having to first explain me another javascript framework.2
-
First day of web server programming class. The teacher clearly doesn't know anything. He doesn't even know what the course is about! When someone asks him what it is, he mumbles about "dynamic" something... Then he says we will be using the languages JavaScript, MVC, and PHP. What the fuck. MVC? LANGUAGE?
He then tries to come up with some project we could make, and is not going to teach anything apparently. Keep in mind, most people in this class have very little previous experience with programming.
After not saying anything for a long time, he finally tells us to make a clock in JavaScript. A CLOCK. He is supposed to teach how to make Web APIs and such, but instead, he tells us to make a clock in JavaScript, and that's it.
What. The. Fuck.10 -
I’ve been seeing a lot of developers claiming “JavaScript sucks” because they do stuff like:
10 + window * [“JS sucks lol”] / {a: []}
What do you expect?2 -
At work they assigned me to another project.
Now I need to work with JS instead of Java.
Plot twist: I have 0 experience with JS and about the same amount of knowledge.
GL to me5 -
What is your OWN opinion on these new Javascript XMR-Miners?
I personally like them. I only want to be asked nicely to enable them so they don't cause problems. I would kindly do it.5 -
no matter what fucking framework you use, or what shitty thing you build with your stupid framework, if you don't have a sound knowledge of Javascript, you are just a FUCKING ASSHOLE AND A DUMB SCAMMER. YOU WOULD BE USELESS AND JOBLESS IF NOT FOR THE ASSHOLES WHO HELPED YOUR HOPELESS LAZY LIFE3
-
My non-techie girlfriend tends to get a tad pissed at me when she understands what people are talking about when she overhears them talking about programming stuff, e.g. "website with Python backend" or "differences between JavaScript and EcmaScript"... what can I say, she's the best rubber duck there is!1

bugfixing quiz:
What is wrong in that Java code:
I would say that happens when developers frequently switch between Java and JavaScript3 -
So today when I was testing my new website I learned that IE/Edge does not support smooth scrolling with JavaScript.
I get why it doesn't work in IE but Edge... like what? Edge is supposed to be a modern browser... No?8 -
What seemed like a simple task of upgrading our angular project and adding universal to it, is slowly beginning to feel like an impossible mission.
Fuck you npm, fuck windows and fuck whoever thinks javascript/typescript can be used for every god damn thing.
I fucking give up -
What if we reinvented javascript written in javascript? Would that be js.js? Xd
Sorry for this one...3 -
I thought I at least was OK at JavaScript, but today I looked at a tictactoe implementation, and with all the fancy new syntax I have no clue what most of it is doing.2
-
"I hate this in javascript, because I never know what it is referring to."
Read this joke here some months ago. Today i learned why it's so funny -
If you like PHP in the back-end, you're gonna LOOOVE it in the front-end!
Hahaha guys look what I've just found:
https://github.com/oraoto/pib
Who needs javascript am I right?5 -
What do you think of LinkedIn's quizzes? I passed the JavaScript one but failed JSON... JSON!! Are you fucking serious! How is that even possible!!!10
-
Today I learned that for boolean HTML attributes, they are considered true if they're present on the element at all, regardless of their value. And that as a rule, you should specify the empty string("") in value.
This wounds me on a logic level since everywhere else in JS, "" is false.
What.
The.
Fuck.
Seriously. Why?14 -
I HATE javascript syntax like this: `${this.props.app.listingObj.property.id}` What idiot thought this crappy syntax would make things run smoother?
Keep in mind I've been hired as a tester, hence the rants. Were this my own app I'd burn it to the ground and rewrite it.4 -
While taking the basic JS interview:
Me: what are the different data types in JavaScript
Candidate: We have a 'var' keyword
Me: :|2 -
@skayo are you still around?

Working on Django as a server side programming, and having a little bit work with htmls and JavaScript.

ESNext (next version of JavaScript) — because no matter what I do, as long as I'm working with web technologies, JavaScript is king. My career has evolved from UI-focused work, primarily working with JavaScript, yet I've also worked on embedded platforms and even operating systems! JavaScript is my foundation and you must always remember your roots!1

what do you guys use to keep track of all the rapid tech changes, esp. in web development (javascript, react blabla).
any suggestions? news sites? blogs?8 -
Took 6 months off from coding...
sat in a JavaScript class today and couldn’t remember what a base case for recursion was...
Dear tutor,
I swear I can be stupid but please bear with me, I try really hard
😭😭😭8 -
What the fuck is so bad about JavaScript??? Like really. Everyone hates it but why? Developers HEAR JavaScript mentioned and immediately throw shit. Why?? JS is my go-to.28
-
So what do you all believe the best first language is and why? I personally say Python or JavaScript because they are simple, and easy to understand8
-
Started my summer internship at a company working on their codebase about two weeks ago. I expected a lot of differences from school, but not this much. I still have no clue what I'm doing. Don't get me wrong, I'm getting stuff done, and it's helping out, but I still have no idea what is going on.
Oh, also, we use outdated Javascript frameworks... I don't actually know Javascript yet but we're just gonna roll with it2 -
TIL that in JavaScript [1, 2, ] gives you a 2 elements array, while [, 1, 2] gives you a 3 elements array
WTF JavaScript???7 -
I was given two lists of values in an excel spreadsheet and I needed to compare/find duplicates. I wrote some JavaScript to handle it. I don't know how to use fucking Excel.
-
WTF?! I just dunno how to handle this error message.
Are you trying to tell me that 'oops that C written Javascript library just crashed by a WTFCrash within a Java VM'?
Eh What!? I mean what?!
Will someone please catch that? I'll throw it to you...5 -
WHAT COCKSUCKING LUNATICS DECIDED TO MAKE A PDF ONLY ABLE TO DOWNLOAD WITH JAVASCRIPT.
I CANT DOWNLOAD YOUR FUCKING PDFS TO SIGN BY TONIGHT BECAUSE ALL I HAVE IS MY IPad. WHICH DOESNT FUCKING HAVE JAVASCRIPT
THERE IS A TIME AND A PLACE TO USE JAVASCRIPT AND THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM. GO CASTRATE YOURSELF WITH A RUSTY KNIFE5 -
It's official. I've hit javascript ~fatigue~. *Burnout*. STAAAAHP with all the frameworks and libraries and weirdly named stuff. To quote Abe Simpson: "I used to be with it, but then they changed what *it* was. Now what I'm with isn't *it*, and what's *it* seems weird and scary to me. It'll happen to you...".
I need to switch gears.1 -
Guess what below if condition evaluates to true in javascript
-- and they say Javascript is beautiful 🙃🙃
if(test == 7 && test == 9 && test == 11) {
console.log('Hello World!');
}4 -
Stack Overflow is like a re-run of the Milgram experiment. Give a bunch of devs authority over their peers and watch the horror unfold.
Think I'll nip over there and ask what the best JavaScript framework is just to stir them up.4 -
I dislike Google page speed. I understand their intention but sometimes it's just stupid, like inclining critical CSS and loading in the rest of the CSS using JavaScript.
What happens if the user has JavaScript disabled? They get a half rendered site they can't use that looks broken, but hey, at least the crappy site loads quickly.5 -
What popular tooth grinder are you happy you don't use? I have a couple, so I will start.
javascript or a js framework
windows
a desktop IDE
google chrome9 -
Final year of my diploma in Information Tech, I overhear a coursemate, well-known know-it-all, explaining what Javascript is:
"It's somewhat like Java but it's used for scripting purposes."
I swear to the Lord Almighty, I wish I could drive my palm through my face.1 -
"C# is better than JavaScript"
I only see ruminations of people who are so far gone mentally they can't even see the forest from the trees anymore:

Imagine having 100s of garbage ways to choose from for something that should have trivial built-in functionality.

Flutter help please.
When creating a new website, code has the following:
MyHomePage({Key key, this.title}) : super(key: key);
What does {} content mean? Is it like Javascript, that there is an object passed and we take only those two params?
Because this is how they use it:

CSS! after days thinking about this and using chrome dev tools to find the magic numbers ( thank arrow keys) i finally made this thing responsive. The magic is in 53px. Thanks to javascript i also did what seemed almost impossible for me in CSS. Phew!!!2

After reading this post, I am so confused what to with this life. I thought of becoming a full stack developer. After reading it, I am thinking, is this I want to do with my life. How many libraries, frameworks, technologies and languages should I learn.
Getting confused what to do now. Grrrr...2 -
After 2 interviews and a complex case study made to apply for Javascript Architect I was asked to travel from Brazil to Germany for final interview. First question:
Interviewer: what are things that you want to learn next.
Me (dumb): Maybe some functional language like Erlang
Interviewer: why not Javascript?
Me (dumber): Javascript is not that good for functional
Man, I WAS nervous that day 😭3 -

When you take a break from JavaScript and invest your time on other stuff, you'll realise how paper-thin it is. Java is to JavaScript what Car is to Carpet?1

A new JavaScript framework you're saying?
I was working on a dashboard website, and when I was deciding what to use (plain JS, Angular...) I've decided to make my own, lightweight routing framework.
It's on GitHub (https://github.com/Kamebase/Kame)
What do you think about it?6 -
if null was the billion dollar mistake https://hackernoon.com/null-the-bil...

Looking at vacancies and the JS build tools asked (Babel, Gulp) and then visiting their websites I notice that I don't understand what they are going on about.
"Leverage gulp and the flexibility of JavaScript to automate slow, repetitive workflows and compose them into efficient build pipelines."
What the actual corpo fuck?
The "get started" page expects you already know npm, typescript, and when you look at their pages, well... Where does the circlejerk end and the actual Javascript start?
I've been out of the corporate loop for a few years, seems it's all about build tools these days. I need to get out of this industry pronto.3 -
Was trying getting started with javascript(actually web dev) by creating a simple app.
All i saw in tutorials were dozens of *JS and *CSS frameworks. What are the web guys upto?7 -
What are the odds that Java and Javascript are released within months of each other with such similar names? I think James Gosling and Brendan Eich were just messing with everyone secretly.3

Recently south Indians are furious because of hindi language used (along with English and Kannad(one of the languages used in south India) ) on metro station board.
What if programmers also starts protesting. Isn't JavaScript shoved into every web developer without any alternative.5 -
I work with Rails on the back end. And React/angular.js on the front end. I am wondering if it would be worth to learn node. I mean, I like Ruby on Rails a lot. But I’m in love with JavaScript ..

I feel like most people on here specialize in Javascript since that's what seems to be discussed the most here.6

Does this book worth reading?
Hello I've finished several books about JavaScript already and many of them mention this one
JavaScript: The Definitive Guide, 6th Edition [2011]
I am a bit embarrassed, because despite it looks like a thorough 1000 pages guide, its last edition dates 2011 year.
From one point of view, it should contain core concepts that still remain the same, from the other, reading 2011 book in 2018 sounds like a not very good decision.
What would you say?8 -
What is the framework you use to generate front end ui
Javascript vanilla, vue.js, angular ? And why you use it9 -
Quick javascript question:
let a = .............
Make a == a always return false.
What would a be? One solution is to let a = NaN. Anything fancier? :>4 -
Microsoft buys JavaScript developer platform npm; plans to integrate it with GitHub.

Now it's npm. MS is taking on the open source world slowly. What if later they change their motto of "Microsoft loves open source".5 -

Needed to help a friend with her Bachelor Thesis. She writes in Javascript and needs to synchronously use the result of a postgresql query. The query call is asynchronous.
We did what any person that searches for a dirty solution would do.
We saved the result of a query in a file and load the file when we need it.
Why is Javascript a thing?6 -

I feel like I know typescript a lot better than JavaScript... Is that strange? 😂
I mean after studying languages like C#, I feel like JavaScript is so random, I feel like it has no structure and that I don't know how to code in JavaScript. However when I start using typescript I just feel like I can understand what I am doing on another level. I would like to learn JS more in depth, anyone that has any tips?1 -
I remember when i was first deciding whether to do web programming or desktop applications, i chose java/C/C++ mainly because I already had experience. Back then when i was researching web stuff it was HTML + CSS + javascript and something called jquery, ok cool seems like I can pick it up in the future. Fastforward to 2018 and i was looking to get into it, BUT holy fucking shit what a confusing minefield and cesspool of javascript horror and frameworks and bloat, wtf happened??
-
Was interested to learn React native, started with the demo project too. But then *bam* Flutter shows up with butter smooth UI and it's all new features.
Well, now I'm in a dilemma as to where I need to direct my 'learning bandwidth'. I'm a huge fan of JavaScript, it's my fav language. Also Dart feels lot like JavaScript.
What do you guys think? Any suggestions and experience are welcome..2 -

What is your opinion on best text editor for HTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP and SQL and with built in FTP?
Seriously in need of a good editor 😑31 -
When you are trying to write event handlers in JavaScript and nothing is working so you spend hours and hours trying to figure out what the fuck is wrong with your js code only for it to be a duplicate id. Fuck sake. I really wish JavaScript warned you about duplicate ids, but then again that's what you get for using such a weakly typed language.

Wanted to benchmark some Javascript yesterday. Stayed up all night making a Javascript benchmarker and now I can't remember what I wanted to benchmark 😿 (I know jsperf exists but I wanted my own)

What do you guys think about Java Spring STOMP? A Socket Based Backend.. Any experiences using that backend with Android? As a Java developer (mainly Android) I would Prefer continue writing backends in Java, I hate Javascript

"Take this test," they said.
I did, and scored 81/100. Not great, but not bad.
"Not bad," they said. "But you took too much time and didn't show us experience in JavaScript."

Besides all the other problems with js, I have to ask the experts:
What is the error or error classes commonly caused in javascript by conceptually treating prototypes or dictionaries as objects proper?
How or in what way does this hurt development as opposed to languages that make distinctions between prototypes and objects?8 -
Any javascript nerds what to come play with me in a devrant-related project? I need help with cross-origin JSON.9

Last fight was with a teammate. He turned so paranoic about using JavaScript. He says that using tools from the browser like localStorage id a risk and can fail easily. (The detail here is: if you ask him what is ES6, you blow his mind)

NEED AN URGENT HELP HERE!!!
As much as I try to stay away from the satanic language that is javascript, I have to read up on it if I need to pass this semester.
Guide me towards the different types of objects in javascript, anyone?
Here's what I know so far- js treats everything as an object, but what I don't know is that are there categories? [the "everything" referring to the primitive data types]14 -
I want to be a better coder and what better way to improve, than look at how the best does it right? 😁
So do any of you guys know a JavaScript/TypeScript project that is commonly known to be a masterpiece in the art of coding?5 -
prediction question: how long do you think until JavaScript goes away, and what language do you think will replace it as the de facto web language? I know Dart is aiming to fill that niche, as well as even Kotlin/JS and/or Kotlin/WebAssembly7

How many languages do you really know... I'd say 7 for myself
"Html" "CSS" JavaScript php "SQL" c# Julia c++ python

Had to add some affiliate JS with a fallback pixel. Put it between noscript tags since thats what the fallback is meant for.
Affiliate Guy: did you implement the fallback?
Me: Did you turn of javascript?
AG: I've just talked to our developers, they say we can't turn of javascript or something
Me: <headdesk>
Are these people retarded -
That part of life when you screwed up a good interview. Took forever to solve an easy question. And guess what.. I thought I will be given freedom to select language. But had to stick to JavaScript.. I know JavaScript but having been doing Java lately .. interviewer was debugging with me.. 😞😞😞

I've been hearing about material design, and wanted to check up on it. Does it specify some good UI guidelines, or is it more JavaScript framework hipe?
Their website didn't load on my browser. I guess I know what it is now2 -

Say what you will about javascript... but if it weren't for javascript, I wouldn't have all my money and upgrades safe with xena.defender.

Fuck PHP, what a piece of shit language, have to add a fucking $ to every fucking variable wether declared or not, half the fucking functionality of a language such as Javascript with a 1/4 of the features and sometimes these features don't even fucking work properly!!! Like fucking functions requiring to have a function, WHAT THE FUCK? Why does something like javascript .find() HAS TO BE SO FUCKING DIFFICULT!!! Seriously, for all of you who swear by PHP, do the world a favor and dig yourselves a grave and bury yourselves in it. Fucking down syndrome motherfuckers.35

i have no idea what im doing
javascript, jsx, typescript, react have some of the ugliest and redundant syntax i have ever seen

Just wondering.. What kind of food would you serve if you'd be organizing a fairly large tech related conference.. Like a javascript conference or php conference? Most visitors would be white males doing coding..6

Dear JavaScript users,
Do you use ES6 or ES5 syntax for creating a class and adding helper functions? Node can't decypher ES6 so unsure what to do.9 -
I just wish I could determine what I want as a reference and what I want as a value in JavaScript. I hate not being able to determine it myself and be constrained by a spec while not having any other language to use (no I'm not gonna use webassembly for everything).6

Changing 1 class in EF flows down directly to front end.
It’s fucking awesome. And a big : “NEVER AGAIN in my life” to JavaScript4 -
Hi. I signed up to devrant a few months ago. I’m new to coding. What language do you recommend I should learn, Java or JavaScript? I hear JavaScript is better because it’s a full stack language whereas Java can only be run on the back office.
Also, is it even worth going down the route of programming, since the AI is supposedly taking over the industry? I mean, I feel like I can make quick progress as I’ve already learned how to inspect code in the browser and change font colors and advanced stuff like that. But seems like AI always be one step ahead of me. What do you think?20 -
Having a build check line for line, item by item what my Javascript syntax has to follow is fucking driving me nuts. A goddammn in place Javascript syntax machine nazi.

I am developing a plug-in for chrome browser using python. I was trying to interact with the html page, and it was very frustrating, now I am using switching to JavaScript.
What I don't get is how did JavaScript become this power that you must use it to interact with the html page.6 -
What the Fun Javascript Part 2
With reference to my old rant : https://devrant.com/rants/1445754/...
An explanation to this...
In JS whenever it sees '==' it has a set of rules that it follows before comparing quantities...
One such rule is...
When we compare a number with a boolean using '==' it first converts boolean into number then compares the two quantities...
So in this case..
When we convert true to number we get 1 and when we compare 1 and 2 they are obviously unequal hence we get false...1 -
What javascript framework/library should we use TO MAKE A WEBSITE?
following these days trend ?
eg, react.js , jQuery ? or normal js?

Is JavaScript the Tower of Babel? What will be the long term effects of the explosion of new frameworks. I liked it when you could use a backend server side language and had JavaScript as the special sauce that could do what the backend could not do. I am sure I will be sent to hell for blaspheming the hot, new js frameworks. Oh well better to burn out than fade away.

Stupid question but how exactly do you use javascript in an html page? What editor can you use to see a live preview as you code? Trying to make a multi-step secure form.11

Javascript is my main tool at work right now, Typescript to be precise. It never ceases to amaze me, I guess as most of you.
What I've encountered recently still doesn't make sense to me but it seemingly works:
function a(){
someString && someFunction()
// other stuff ...
}
someString can be a string or undefined, someFunction can be a function or undefined.
How is that valid Javascript, without an assignment? Haven't found any explanation yet.22 -

Hello devrant,
What are you guys thinking about applying -example- React.js job , you are already full stack and never wrote react before but you know good javascript .
What CEOs,CTOs , Team Leaders and developers think about those kind a job applications -
Javascript drama is a never ending horror. I was building an app for a client that says he want reactnative and I used The Platform module without importing guess what? I never saw an error but that part of the code didn't just work and no crashes this is crazy no wonder apps built in JavaScript don't show error in dev but crashes in production javascript is just one comedy that won't cease creating unessary bugs that should not be allowed at the first place, js is just crazy in someways3
