I hired a woman for senior quality assurance two weeks ago. Impressive resume, great interview, but I was met with some pseudo-sexist puzzled looks in the dev team.
Meeting today. Boss: "Why is the database cluster not working properly?"
Team devs: "We've tried diagnosing the problem, but we can't really find it. It keeps being under high load."
New QA: "It might have something to do with the way you developers write queries".
She pulls up a bunch of code examples with dozens of joins and orderings on unindexed columns, explains that you shouldn't call queries from within looping constructs, that it's smart to limit the data with constraints and aggregations, hints at where to actually place indexes, how not to drag the whole DB to the frontend and process it in VueJS, etc...
New QA: "I've already put the tasks for refactoring the queries in Asana"
I'm grinning, because finally... finally I'm not alone in my crusade anymore.
Boss: "Yeah but that's just that code quality nonsense Bittersweet always keeps nagging about. Why is the database not working? Can't we just add more thingies to the cluster? That would be easier than rewriting the code, right?"
Dev team: "Yes... yes. We could try a few more of these aws rds db.m4.10xlarge thingies. That will solve it."
QA looks pissed off, stands up: "No. These queries... they touch the database in so many places, and so violently, that it has to go to therapy. That's why it's down. It just can't take the abuse anymore. You could add more little brothers and sisters to the equation, but damn that would be cruel right? Not to mention that therapy isn't exactly cheap!"
Dev team looks annoyed at me. My boss looks even more annoyed at me. "You hired this one?"
I keep grinning, and I nod.
"I might have offered her a permanent contract"46 -
What. The. Fuck. Did. Just. Happen.
A random girl followed me on social media. She looked nice and intelligent so I followed her back.
Started to chat about some random stuff. She told me she works at the HR department of an international company and asked me what's my job. Told her I'm a software developer.
Right after that she sent me a selfie. Obviously I said she looks nice, she thanked it and asked some more about my job. After a short discussion I received another selfie but somewhere in between she lost the outer layer of her clothing.
She still looks nice but now I'm sitting here utterly confused and cant tell whether it was my sarcastic humour and moderately handsome facial features which charmed her or she just needs to recruit someone for a new project and willing to do everything to reach the quota.67 -
1. The quality of the coffee and toilet paper you encounter during an interview tells you more than promises about table tennis or fruit baskets.
2. Try to determine who their primary client is: subscribers, app buyers, advertisers, etc. It's a major influence on the company dynamic.
3. Before an interview, you can just say: "I would like to sit down with a PO and run through one backlog feature and one bug, to get a feel for the type of tasks at the company". Such an activity immediately reveals team structure, whether they have product owners & scrum masters, what a sprint looks like, how they prioritize tasks, and how organized/chaotic your work experience will be.16 -
Bruteforce IRL
So I recently bought my first house (yay!).
Whilst doing the initial viewings I saw the below on the backyard and thought "hey that's neat, I can leave a key in there for when I come in late and my fiancée is asleep.
Fast forward to moving in day and the previous owners hand me the keys so I ask "oh yeah, what's the code for the keysafe" and he just looks at me completely blank, so I'm just like "the box on the wall out back" and he's just like "oh! So that's what that is. No we've never had the code for that, bye."
Being a pen tester I'm just stood there dumbfounded thinking "How the hell can you have a locked box attached to your house and not want to know what is inside!"
Anyway, that brings us to now where I'm stood outside in December on a Sunday morning brute forcing my way into my own keysafe.
I wish this didn't run so many parallels with my work life 😂52 -
When I finished my studies, I was looking for a job and had an interview at a smallish company.
Boss: can you do C?
Me: yes, I have already done some stuff in C.
Boss: I mean, are you really good in C?
Me, growing suspicious: well yes I already have been using it - but anyway, there's also the project documentation for looking up, right?
Boss: uhm, the code IS the documentation.
I envisioned myself being drowned in undocumented spaghetti code and wasn't really keen on that job anymore, but my following question pretty much ended the interview:
Me: oh, I see. Do you have any roadmap for getting your development to a more professional base?
His looks, priceless! He was just shocked when he realised that he had failed my interview, and that I was a fresher made it even harder to digest for him.30 -
One of my worst meetings, as the sheer rage was unbelievable.
Backstory:
Architect: "Stop duplicating code", "stop copy pasting code", "We need to reuse code more", "We need to look at a new pattern for unit tests" etc.
Meeting:
Architect: What did you want to talk about?
Me: I built a really simple lightweight library to solve a lot of our problems. Its built to make unit testing our code much easier, devs only need to change a small bit of how they work.
Architect: I like the pattern a lot, looks great ... but why a library? can we not just copy the code from project to project?
... do you have a twin or something?2 -
When I was a kid, I used Dreamweaver and my mother would watch me doing things and she used to say "Oh, my dear there are lots of icons and buttons!!! How do you manage that? How do you know which one is for what purpose? You are really brilliant."
And now I use Atom IDE and she says "This looks very easy. Technology has evolved so much that you don't have to click so many buttons and just write simple lines, just as simple as writing letters and the software does the rest of the things. These softwares have done a brilliant job."
Seriously the technology has changed (and my mother too) !!!12 -
Receives email from warranty guy in work.
Warranty: "Hi, see attached scan in PDF form.
I normally fill the boxes in manually, scan as pdf to myself and then email it on to the higher ups, but they now say they need it in excel form from now on! Can you convert it for me?"
Me: "It looks like your scan's quality isn't good enough for a convert to excel.
Where do you get the original form?
Is it from a website?"
Warranty: "Hang on and ill send you an email with the file and give you a call"
*receives email and a phone call"
Warranty:
"There you go. Theres an excel sheet in that email. what do i do?"
Me: "So.... just so I understand the question... you just fill in this excel sheet, scan as pdf and send it on... but they want it sent as an excel form and not a pdf?"
"Yes."
"So.... Could you not just fill in the excel sheet and email it to them?"
"What do you mean?"
"....fill in the excel sheet as normal, and go to file, share and email... send the original one on."
"And what would that do?"
"...you... you'd be sending the form as an excel sheet, as requested??"
Warranty: *silence for 10 seconds* Oh, i see now. I get you! You're a genius! Well done for figuring it out. Thanks a million!!"

I fucking hate CNET already. I mean who likes a website which autoplays a video everytime you visit them, with 200% volume.
But this time, I am just so fucking annoyed. Here is the title of an article:
"iPhone 8, X's wireless charging is a game changer for Android"
And the subtitle:
"When it comes to Apple, plenty of Android phone makers are monkey see, monkey do."
FUck you motherfucker. "Monkey see, monkey do". Are you fucking kidding me you cunt?
Remeber your 3D touch bullshit? Your fucking wireless charging will be bullshit too.
"the rest of the phone users make do with messy cables."
Maybe you're a fucking imbecile who doesn't know how to manage simple cables and ends up with broken wires.
You know who looks like a monkey? Some apple users who uses that shitty looking wireless earphone, which looks like monkey's dick you asshole.
Fuck off!18 -
I made a Trello board and listed some tasks for me and my team.
My boss comes in, I show him the trello board to show how I organized our tasks.
He liked it, so I asked him if we can use it more frequently.
He replied: this is your code, do whatever you want.
I asked: my code?
He replied: yah didn't just build this webpage? This interactive task manager.
Me in shock: hold on you think I built trello?
Boss: oh ... You didn't ? It looks like something you'd do for your "front end masterbaution".
Me: oh wow, well... If that was the case I would've made $425 million on top of my salary.
Boss: looked at me like meh ~ and walked away...7 -
Just did some initial programming of my Arduino to run the alcohol sensor.. seems to be working well. So, looks like it's time for testing 🤤 cheers!32

Swift, oh my god, why do you have to be like this?
I'm looking to write a simple for loop like this one in java
for(int i = 5; i > 0; i--) {
// do shit
}
Thats it, simple, go from 5 to 1 (inclusive), I saw that to iterate over a range in a for loop (increasing ordeR) I can do this
for i in 0...5 {
// do shit.
}
So I thought maybe I could do this to go in reverse (which seems logical when you think about it doesn't it?)
for i in 5..<0 {
// do shit
}
But no, this compiles FINE (THIS IS THE FUCKING KICKER IT COMPILES), alright, when you the code runs you get a fucking exception that crashes the mother fucking application, and you know what the problem is?? This dogshit, shitStain of a language doesn't like it when integer that the for loop starts with is larger than the integer that the for loop ends with MOTHERFUCKER ATLEAST TELL ME THAT AT COMPILE TIME AS A MOTHERFUCKING WARNING YOU PIECE OF SHIT!!
Alright *deep breathing*, now we can't just be stuck on this raging, we're developers need to move forward, so I google this, "Swift for loop in reverse" fair enough I get a straight forward answer that tells me to use the `stride` functionality. The relevant code for it
for i in stride(from:5 to:1 by:-1) {
// do shit
}
Wow looks fine and simple right?? (looks like god damn any other language if you ask me, no innovations here piece of shit apple!) WRONG BITCHES !!! In the latest version of Swift THE FUCKING DEVELOPERS DECIDED TO REMOVE STRIDE ALTOGETHER, WITHOUT ADDING IN A GOOD REPLACEMENT FOR THAT SHIT!
Alright NOW IM FUCKING MAD, I got rage on stackoverflow chat, a guy who's been working on ios for quite a while comes up n says and I quote
"I can sort of figure it out, but besides that, iterating in reverse is uncommon enough that it probably hasn't crossed anyone's mind."
Now hope you guys understand my frustration, and send me cookies to calm me down.
Thank you for listening to me !27 -
Interviewing a candidate for a dev position.
Interview is over and handshakes commence.
After the interview we have a debrief in a room that has hand sanitizer in it (just coincidence).
I squirt some and it comes out like a rocket ship; getting all over one of his resumes we printed. It looks like jizz...
One of the head guys walks in a says:
“I hope he didn’t hand you the resume like that.”
To which one of our ops people, let’s call her Sara, says...
“No, leanrob just REALLY likes his resume!!!”
> I almost fucking died from laughter3 -
Exp. that made me doubt my skills?
My non programming sister managed to find a bug I was looking for...
I couldn't find the problem for hours and she just looks at the screen and goes "That looks odd!"8 -
Before iPads took over the general population of home computing, I used to do house calls to help people with their computers for some extra folding money. One day I get a call from a regular saying that ever since I last worked on his computer it won't stay on.
He says it comes on for a few seconds, then just shuts down. It never did that before I upgraded the RAM.
So I drive over to his house and turn on the computer. He says, "See, it starts fine, but in a few seconds it'll just shut off. Just watch"
The computer boots up without any issues.
He says, "Well, of course it doesn't do it now that you're here!"
I reboot it a few times, boots fine every time. Suddenly I realize what's going on. I say to him, "Hey, why don't you try turning it on for me?"
He says, "What difference will that make?"
I say, "Just trust me, turn it on."
He bends down, presses the power button, looks up at the monitor and watches it boot. But he doesn't release the button! He just keeps holding it down until it shuts off.
"See!" he says, "why does it only do that when I turn it on!"
I then have to explain to him how holding down the power button forces a shutdown.
But, it never did that before I worked on it!16 -
People will always ask us to fix their computer :/
Had a meeting with IT-director of our client.
Me: Yes, with our solution you will be sure that the details of all your 17.500 employees will be stored and accessible for all required third party systems. We will have a 6 month preliminary schedule and it will cost..
Random: Excuse me!
Random employee interrupts and has actually stepped into the meeting room.
Random: Can you take a look at my computer? Something is wrong.
IT-director: Is there noone else who can look at this?
Random: But it was working a minute ago. It probably will be a quick fix?
IT-director looks at me like "what even is this?"
IT-director: Go down to the 12th and talk to IT there, we're having a meeting here.
Random: I thought you guys who are so good with computers could fix this in a jiffy!
Me: Burning inside
IT-director: Just leave us, please.
Random leaves.
IT-director looks at me and I look knowingly back. We are both sad for a moment. Then we continue.9 -
My mother sits in front of me with her laptop. After a time she asks me, who founded Microsoft. I say: "Bill Gates but why?"
She: "Oh my god, I am winning an iPhone!!!"
I know exactly what's going on, so I go to her and show her the shitty URL and some grammar mistakes in the text and close the tab after explaining that it is phishing.
After that she just looks at me and is sooooo angry about me, because she still thinks that it was real. Only because they "knew which Internet provider we were using and that they just wanted to reward us for being customer!!!". I'm so sad now, because I never thought she would fall for sth. like this... 😔6 -
Our teacher wanted to show us a video in class so she opened Internet explorer (windows 7) used bing to search for the video and clicked on the link.
The video didn't work and instead there was an error message saying 'Your browser is too old, please use a more modern browser, for example mozilla firefox'
She looked at the error message for around 30 seconds like it had just told her that it is gonna explode in a minute. After some time one of my friends asked if she needed help. Here is what happened:
F: do you need any help?
T: No (very serious voice)
Teacher shuts down computer, stands up, looks at our class angrily and says in a very serious voice:
T: you broke the computer although you aren't allowed to touch it!
Me: mother of god...5 -
Well. My life is over. I got punchy and accidentally deleted a client’s entire site. Backups and all. Wasn’t paying attention to which specific delete feature I was using and POOF. It’s all gone.
The worst part? I was actually just trying to delete a staging site where I was trying out some stuff to try to win a site redesign contract. Now it looks like I’ll be paying THEM for damages and/or building them a new site for FREE.
I’m so done.27 -
1st post. Not sure if rant.
> Join 1st job after college.
> Desk assigned is close to a senior dev
> Random day, QA asks senior dev questions on something and coincidentally I happened to be working on the same thing.
> Senior dev borrows my system and explains qa something.
> By the end of explanation senior dev had bunch of shell commands written on notepasd on my machine.
> I don't understand jack shit of whats happening.
> QA looks at me and says, "Ping me once."
> I think, "no idea what just happened but must be something related to network ."
> I open terminal and type "ping" and quitely wait for further instructions (address to ping that is).
> Everyone starts laughing their asses off.
> QA guy opens slack, and sends himself the commands on text document.
> I realize what just happened
> Laugh awkwardly with everyone to ease the pressure

What do you do for a living?
I just write line of codes until it works and looks aesthetically pleasing.3 -
HO. LY. SHIT.
So this gig I got myself into, they have a whitelist of IP addresses that are allowed to access their web server. It's work-at-home. We just got a new internet provider, and it looks like I get a different public IP address everytime I disconnect and connect to the WIFI. And since it looks like the way they work on their codebase is that you either edit the files right on the server or you download the files that you need to work on, make the changes, and then re-upload the file back to the server and refresh the website to see the changes, now I can't access the server because I get different IP addresses. And it's highly inconvenient to keep emailing them to add IP addresses to the whitelist.
No source control, just straight-up download/upload from/to the server. Like, srsly. So that also means debugging is extremely hard for me because one, they use ColdFusion and I've never used that shit before and two, how the hell do you debug with this style of work?
I just started this last Tuesday, and I already want to call it quits. This is just a pain in the ass and not worth my time. I'll be glad to just go back to driving Lyft/Uber to make money while I look for a full-time, PROPER job.
By the way, can I do that to a contracting job? Just call it quits when you haven't even finished your first task? How does this work?17 -
We recently got a new trainee (Not sure if its correct germans correct me i mean "Praktikant"). This guy studied computer Engineering and canceld his studies to work as a developer. So this guy is working on a typo 3 Page for a Client and asks me for help because He got a follding error. Im in the last year of My studies btw. He sends me very Bad formatted HTML template file. I quickly correct the formatting and fix the 3 open Tags That He forogt to Close. send it back to him and walk to his workplace to See him integrate it to his own code again. He Double clicks the HTML file an Google Chrome opens. He then looks at me and says and Where is the code. I say to him That he just opened the HTML file with his Browser. And He responds with yes but i wanted to See the code Not this.
Im done for today 😑😑11 -
I swear to god, I'm going to track down the dipshit who just made my day hilariously painful.
So here I am, finishing up this project that's been going on for what feels like an eternity, when I get an email "why doesn't order X show up in this other system?".
I mean, it's a common thing they can take 15 minutes to push across, so the usual quick glance and what do you know, it's just sitting there as if it's waiting to be pushed through, than an hour later... it's still there, so I start digging, maybe a data issue, nope looks all good, customer details, payment details, products...
just another order, jump on the logs and all looks fi......... wait.... why does this postcode have 3 digits and not 4 , Australia has 4 digit postal codes fyi, looks at order again, 3 digits, look at log, 3....hold on why's it only 3 digits, checks code, handled as string... ok..... where the fuck would it drop a digit.... frontend requires 4 digits, validation requires 4 digits... how the fuck did you get 3 digits in... I can't see anything anywhere that logically makes sense for this🤔
Drops address into google and it's a postcode starting with 0.
Jumps on DB and the fucker is an int in the postcode table. For all you playing at home 0123 <> 123
I don't know if I should feel bad, or impressed, it's been 7 years since this table was created, and 7 years before someone managed to live in one of these parts of the country with a leading 0.
QA didn't spot this years ago,
No one tested this exact scenario,
The damn thing isn't even documented as a required delivery area, but here we are!
Kudos good sir, you broke it! 🤜 🤛
You sir may get your order now!rant cover every possibility always suspect the unexpected my problem now! not my fault 😅 data how dafuq was that even missed11 -
I have a college that never seems to answer anything fully, just the bare minimum to make it seem like he did.
Regular conversations with him goes like this:
Me: “hey, I have a problem with this feature you added, I’m getting an error *insert error*”
Him: “yeah theres a script for that...”
Me: *wait for the script he mentioned*
Me: “whats the script?”
Him: “it’s FixIssues.sh”
Me: *looks for the script in the project*
Me: “hey, I can’t find it, where is it?”
Him: “here it is” *pastes a script into chat*
Me: “Oh, where can i find that in the project?”
Him: “you can’t”
Me: “???”
Him: “I have it in my OneDrive”
WHY CAN’T YOU JUST SAY THAT IN THE FIRST PLACE? Why this song and dance every time I ask something? This conversation could have been over in 1 minute but instead we both have to waste 15 minutes of our time to get this far.6 -
When I am sitting in my school and writing a few lines of simple HTML code, people looks at my screen and more less shouting out loud "wow you are like a hacker or something? Who are you hacking and how do you do it and how did you learn it?". It happened a couple of times to me. Sometimes I just tell them it as it is and saying something like "it's simple HTML code" and a little explanation of what it is. Sometimes (depending who it is) I answer that it is a new kind of spyware I'm developing and if I'm lucky they believe in me and starts begging me for not hurting their computers.
Just a few lines of <script> and some code highlighting. How to become a hacker!8 -
Fucking evopdf, I spent 2 days trying to figure out why the fuck my js isn't rendering the html for printing. I created the structure in html already, and it's rendered perfectly with js DOM, when evopdf ran from backend it shows nothing, tried not using external script, tried to put value one by one, it works, my css is also broken, thanks fucker, the client only asked to directly download the html page instead of save as PDF. I thought why the fuck not?
evo pdf modified my CSS element for some odd reason, flex and grid got messed up, page width also fucked along with font size, doesn't support some javascript function. I shit you not the .after and let doesn't work. Fucking garbage
Edit: it worked now, but I spend hours today rewriting everything just to looks decent and it still looks like shit fml6 -
Project manager: We have 13weeks for this project. We have promised the client.
Me: okay, why wasnt I consulted on that commitment?
Project Manager: yeah.... we have to do it
Me: okay, if we have 2 dedicated backend and one full time frontend - ONLY on this project.
Project manager: (with the face of lies) yes yes sure we can do that.
6 weeks later, after continuous interruptions. Frontend is behind because he was only on the project to an amount of 2 weeks of the 6 weeks.
Project manager: Are we still on time?
Me: *looks around for prank cameras* no the f#*k we not
Project manager: can we put in weekends?
Me: its 2019 bro, that ain't happening
*But because I am a nice guy, and dont like taking Ls, we will have it ready. Just not gonna tell the project manager, he deserves a few sleepless nights *7 -
Probably the jankiest fan that I've ever built 😂
I just need it to not sweat gallons on the bus and needed it to be done quick and dirty to not miss the bus so meh.. kinda curious about the looks that I'll get for using this thing to cool myself though 🙃5 -
Why the fuck do teachers take points off for coding style. Like really placing my open house brace on the same line as an if is what looks good TO ME. And breaking from a while loop with an inverted condition is nicer than a huge if TO ME. Fuck it I like the m_ for member variables too. And yes C++ usually names functions like someFunction, but I like how c# does SomeFunction. Like shit, it's personal I don't care that I lose 5points every test I do it just to say fuck you21

Told the new hire that for the first week they can just familiarise themselves with the JS framework, do the tutorials, and read through the code / docs.

Rant 2/n; 😎 = me, 💩 = client
The (brief but comprehensive) docs I sent my client contained the following line: "Any text that has not been translated will be highlighted yellow for the admins".
A day later:
💩: "Hey, I like the new design, but why are the titles yellow?"
😎: "They aren't actually yellow. You just see that because you're logged in and they aren't translated"
💩: "But the yellow doesn't look good with the design. Visitors will think it looks unprofessional. Make them not yellow!"
😎: "They won't see the yellow! Only you can see it so you don't miss any translations"
💩: "Hi, I just noticed some of the titles aren't in English. How do I translate them? And they're still yellow."

I check the code in the editor and everything looks fine except he saved his php code with an extension .txt 😑 😑2 -
Not only do I write software, but now I help the managers view and understand our analytics, just like in kindergarten.
Now I'm forced to help them essentially fake data so investors are satisfied 🤡🔫
"Delete metrics X, Y, and Z for now, we don't want anyone to see them!"
"Change the label of this metric to 'unique user' views! (not total!)"
"Set all charts to cumulative so it looks like they are all up and to the right!"
Sigh.

This afternoon:
OH GOD THIS THEME MAKES ME WANT TO SCOOP THE EYES OUT OF MY SOCKETS THE FONT LOOKS UGLIER THAN THE PILE OF SKINFAT I SCRAPED OFF MY MOUSE ITS AWFUL I NEED HUGS SEND HELP
Thanks, companies, for trying, I guess.
I love dark themes, but the ones provided are often even worse than the light themes.
They go overboard with extreme black/white contrasts, pick a super weird hue of puke-gray, or certain elements are unreadable.
So, please, instead of wasting the time of your designers on something that's clearly too difficult for them.... how about just making it easy to create community themes for your app?
Especially if it's an electron app, how hard is it to add a config option to import a CSS file, and provide one template as an example?7 -
This happened sometime back..
A guy came to our university with a social network that he created. It was for students and professors to interact, to form study groups and earn points as they mark done topic as "studied". He made a deal with our university, so everyone was forced to sign up for this.
While he was giving a demo of the website, me and my friend started ranting.
"This website is shit. Why are we forced to use this?"
"This UI looks just like LinkedIn"
"This top bar is right out of bootstrap"
"I have seen that graph in one of the libraries. He didn't even change the defaults."
Another friend who was sitting besides us was hearing all this.
"I don't understand a word you guys are talking. It is too high level for me"
We replied, "Don't worry. We will talk in low level. 00101110010101..."4 -

To the left, a conventional circuit board design done by a human. To the right, a design done by TopoR, a software that designs circuits automatically.
It looks absolutely alien, yet beautiful. It doesn't care about how it looks, it doesn't care about angles and alignment. It only cares about efficiency and designs every connection to be as short as possible. It can even account for electric interference.
Humans just cannot compete.25 -

This happened via mail thread today.
Boss: we need this new brilliant feature I just made up and running asap! Top priority, it has to be done well, for my reputation is on the line!
Me: *looks at the specifics* 'kay, looks easy enough, this evening max and it will be ready. I just nees some extra info about what kind of data validations (I speak no accountant) are needed, and some other details (a total of 3 questiona).
B: Sure! Remember, it needs to be perfect, as my reputation is at stake. Call me on the phone and I'll give you the details!
M: Can't you answer via mail? Thua way both me and the other devs will have clewr guidelines
B: Just call me! Why do you need it to be written down? It's faster this way!
...Fine. I'll keep asking until you're ready to give me a written answer to my questions. No way I'll take security details via phone for something you want in production this evening. No chance in Hell I'll take responsibility for "misunderstanding" what you said on the phone. Why does it always has to be like that?8 -

Here’s the funny part - he has 2 YEO building on top of freelance dev. code base’s on wordpress… Just fucking yesterday he told me, that Angular 10 framework is simillar to Jquery. Fucking dipshit, his code is so fucking bad it looks like italian sausage made out of spaghetti.
Not sure if I hate him more than ours truly cheapest CTO or him for being ridiculously incompetent and arrogant young asshole.
I’m in charge of him.
Help me.10 -

*me trying to add one more field to a SQL request*
*asks coworker* Hey, do you know how I'd get this field? You have to go through 4 tables just to find it because of the way the tables are related.
*coworker looks for a bit* Oh. That's crazy. We should ask the DBA.
*we ask our 60 year old DBA for some help.*
He walks us through a minefield of inner and outer joins and selects and we finally arrive at a solution. Kudos to our DBA, who in the eyes of us young devs is a wizard.3 -
*receives an old business laptop as payment for refurbishing another one*
Hmm, this thing doesn't have a charger with it.. looks like it's taking 18.5V.. my HP laptop's charger supplies that but its barrel connector doesn't fit 🤔
Regular users: oh dear now I have to buy a charger with a fitting connector for this.. where do I even start?!
Me: Well I guess I could just remove the charging port and solder some wires straight into the board instead 🤔
But that voltage.. my HP laptop's charger is still in use and I don't really want to fuck around with that one.
Regular users: oh dear oh dear, shouldn't I just throw this laptop away?
Me: well I guess that I could just use one of the rails of my upgraded lab bench power supply for it?
Lab electronics saving the day, every day, time and time again.. fuck yeah 😎6 -

Just finished making the interface for my app in WPF only to find out that it will be waaay harder to plug it to WPF than I thought.
In fact, it would be easier to just remake it from scratch in WPF - which I'm planning on doing when I get some free time.
Don't you just hate when that happens?
..eh, at least it looks somewhat good.8 -
I just launched a small web service/app. I know this looks like a promo thing, but it's completely non-profit, open source and I'm only in it for the experience. So...
Introducing: https://gol.li
All this little app offers is a personal micro site that lists all your social network profiles. Basically share one link for all your different profiles. And yes, it includes DevRant of course. :)
There's also an iframe template for easy integration into other web apps and for the devs there's a super simple REST GET endpoint for inclusion of the data in your own apps.
The whole thing is on GitHub and I'd be more than happy for any kind of contribution. I'm looking forward to adding features like more personalization, optimizing stuff and fixing things. Also any suggestions on services you'd like see. Pretty much anything that involves a public profile goes.
I know this isn't exactly world changing, but it's just a thing I wanted to do for some time now, getting my own little app out there.9 -
When you're sitting in front of a problem the whole day and cannot put your finger on a solution. Stay 45m longer than necessary, implement and push - yet something tickles your brain - something's just not ... right ... although it works .. but
Get out, walk to the subway, wait for your train - and immediately see the solution as clear as day. Hammer perfect Pseudocode in your phone, get strange looks as you laugh out loud - it was soooo easy and right there in front of you the whole time. You even have already used the exact same function today.
So happy, now you can sleep without a brain-tickle2 -
My place of work just put on the World Cup live stream. I'm not even a huge fan but it looks nicer than my current code, so I'll live in denial for a bit2

Got an email earlier this week. It went something like this:
"It looks like your team still hasn't delivered the logging and monitoring solution that we asked for. Can you get it done in time for our production deployment next Friday?"
Um, wait, excuse me, WHAT?
1. You never actually asked for the thing you claim we didn't deliver. In fact, when we brought up the fact that you should probably have some monitoring set up for your servers, you said it would be handled entirely by your own team.
2. I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON THIS PROJECT FOR SIX MONTHS WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME YOUR DEADLINE UNTIL NOW
3. I won't even have time to start working on this until the Monday after your prod deployment date. Sorrynotsorry.
I really shouldn't be surprised though. This project has been a clusterfuck from the very beginning so this is just par for the course.2 -
Designer: in an effort to create our brand identity we've come up with a design pattern to use across Android, iOS, and web.
Me: this design goes against material design principles which we agreed we'd use. Also it looks like a mashup of iOS and Windows 10
Designer: just because it looks like an iOS/Windows 10 mashup doesn't mean it was designed for those platforms; it was designed as our brand for all platforms. We feel very strongly about keeping it, specifically the pieces that make you feel uncomfortable as an Android developer
Me: 🙄😑😣😒7 -
I'm a lead engineer, I design, I code, I debug, I test, I struggle, I deliver, I'm just a basic building block in my company, hardly involve in product roadmap planning. This is pretty clear in my LinkedIn profile. Jp Morgan recruiter called me for Vice president role. VP? Seriously? me skipping 4-5 levels, just with an interview process? Are you kidding me?
I asked her two times "...are you sure?", I lost my words, somehow gathered courage and asked, "what's the portfolio looks like, how many people will report to me?" Then she, calmly revealed that it's just an ic dev role and they name it that ways in their company.
What the actual ducking-duck-duckkk!
P.s. not sure about jpmc rest of the world but that's how it is in jp Morgan india.8 -
Since fucking when did "bare metal" mean just running on an OS?? At a conference and literally everyone is like "we got kubernetes running on bare metal", got super excited for a bit because just the idea of that sounds amazing but they're using it as slang for "basically not in a container or vm."
Nothing exciting at all. Now we're patting ourselves on the back for getting software working without it being preconfigured as a container or a VM image. No one knows how to do anything any more. MUCH too much abstraction going on.
I guess it keeps me more employable, but the state of the world from a developer standpoint is just sad.
(For reference, this is what the first sentence of "Bare Metal" looks like on wikipedia "In computer science, bare machine (or bare metal) refers to a computer executing instructions directly on logic hardware without an intervening operating system.")4 -

Hey fam, first post in devrant!
Possible client comes up to me and asks me what my mockup for his app looks like. I show it to him on running on my Android device.
Him: where are all the images and descriptions/info?
Me: you didn't give me any. I just made what it could look like if we had images and descriptions.
Him: well talk to some people in the departments and put it in.
Me: but that's not my job. You wanted me to make what it could look like if we actually went through with this project.
Him: okay. How hard would it be to make it for Apple?
Noooooooooo... I'm out.8 -
Sports commenter at AI vs AI deathmatches.
It would probably go like this:
- UltimateGod the Second launches half of the US nuclear missiles to NorthernEurope!
I guess that's it for the poor bugger.
- WankerBot69 tries to delay its doom by channeling old 4chan archives into a devastating ddos attack. UGtS' logic processe go down for a few nanoseconds... Ugh, that's NASTY! It doesn't even have a mother
- Missiles still going up. Looks like UGtS confused the imperial and metric system just like its predecessor.
- WB69 is now has the upper hand. It just used a SMB exploit and is bow encrypting UGtS's storage.
- UGtS is down. We all hope UltimateGod the third will do better. For now, all hail our catevolent overlord WankerBot69.
- See you next time on Bot Armaggedon folks! -
I am a people people pleaser.
Especially when it comes to deadlines. I struggle heavily with them. For example:
My boss: 'Will the app be done by Friday?'
Me: 'well some features won't be ready but overall yes.'
The truth: "No even if I work on it 24/7 there are just so many things in the background that are too technical to explain to my boss that it will be impossible for me to hit that deadline. It will most likely take over a month to be ready for beta testing...."
I just don't know how to deal with those kinds of questions. I don't want to say 'most likely over a month' because it makes me look like a bad dev but at the same time I know that that is way more realistic than 'it will be done by Friday'
The truth is: even if it just looks like 3 buttons to you, in reality I need to change thousands of lines of code to accomplish the expected goals...
P.S:
I wanted to write this rant for a long time. Now I am drunk. There will be a sober more ordered version of this rant.11 -
Conversation between my husband and myself.

Was just thinking of building a command line tool's to ease development of some of my games assets (Just packing them all together) and seeing as I want to use gamemaker studio 2 thought that my obsession with JSON would be perfect for use with it's ds_map functions so lets start understanding the backend of these functions to tie them with my CL tool...
*See's ds_map_secure_save*
Oh this might be helpful, easily save a data structure with decent encryption...
*Looks at saved output and starts noticing some patterns*
Hmm, this looks kinda familiar... Hmmm using UTF-8, always ends with =, seems to always have 8 random numbers at the start.. almost like padding... Wait... this is just base64!
Now yoyogames, I understand encryption can be hard but calling base64 'secure' is like me flopping my knob on the table and calling it a subtle flirt...6 -
kinda coding i guess, company specialising in making statistics for other companies, analytic stuff or such, wanted stack: php, mysql

Interviewer: * looks at me too *
me (learning inner, outer, left, right joins and transactions yesterday): * am i a joke to you? *
also me: * they must be making fun of me or something * well the query should be SELECT * FROM tableName; but one should really not use that, as * in theory really slows things down, because it loads unnecessary meta data bla bla
they: * look at each other * You're really good young man! Yes of course we know that, haha!
Interviewer: You said you just finished Uni, you doesn't seem like a junior to me! good job!
techGuy: so how would you LIMIT your results to 100 rows?
me: sigh * looks at door without turning head, so they wont notice *4 -
I may cool off a little bit after this rant:
One of my junior coworkers weirdly peeks into my screen while I code or do any stuffs - this is what I hate the most.
Also whenever we discuss something by my desk, he looks for the opportunity to touch my Mac every goddamn time. Even after I told that shitwit several times about it.
Once, I went to have a conversation with a senior engineer just a few desks away only to come by and see that fuckface peeking into my project.
I had to tell him off with my absolute verbal retaliation.2 -

I spent 4 hours finding a good way to instanciate golang structures. Came up with a function that returned a value or pointer and I just kept reusing the nomenclature for an entire project. Then my buddy looks over and goes, "Ethan, you're a f****** idiot", and shows me the standard nomenclature. Now I have to refactor my entire project. FML.

Need to add instructions (on readme) for installing pnmp, or if possible, have the top-level npm i install it (lol).
Also, it looks like we are no longer using lerna? If that's right, let's remove the dependency; its dependencies give some security audit messages at install.
Me:
it's good enough for now. Added a new ticket to resolve package manager confusions. (Migrate to pnpm workspaces)
Reviewer:
I will probably be responsible for automating deployment of this (I deployed the webapp on cloudflare pages and there is no work that needs to be done. "automating deployment" literally means replacing npm with pnpm). I disagree that it's good enough for now.
Imagine all readmes on github document how to install yarn/pnpm.
Lesson learned:
If you think an OOP static site developer can't handle modern JS framework, you are probably right.2 -
I'm starting to think we might need a global union for developers. I have been reading the comments today and it looks like a lot us getting way underpaid.
New features should be a moment of joy if they are released. So far so good. People really liked the idea of working together on opensource project. The app is updated. But then we encountered a major problem. It looks like some of us are getting so underpaid that they can't pay for the 14 dollar it cost to start the opensource project they want. We must rebel against this.
14 dollar, how much is 14 dollar. How many hobbies cost 14 dollar to start up. From running to collecting stamps. Its going to cost you more And how many hobbies are you as passionate about as your own open source project.
The next great thing is that it is show in the place where developers are eagerly looking to join a opensource project. And will probably join you're product because I'm sure between all of us there are tons of wonderfull ideas just waiting to be build.
And for me personal I do not mind supporting an app that I use almost every day. And just keeps growing without annoying ads.
So you should be more then willing to pay 14 dollars. And are ready to start recruiting your team.
And if you really can't pay. Your house burned down, you needed it for food. Your only pc is beyond saving. You can be a positive force in this community and do pay with upvotes.
But if you are to much a cheapskate to pay 14 dollars well, I think I was clear enough.5 -
I don't get it. Bethesda managed to make the best temporal antialiasing solution to ever grace this planet with TSSAA in Doom 2016 and then manage to fuck it up by removing it in favor of forced TAA in Doom Eternal which looks like complete dogshit
WHYYYYYYYY
The graphics were /literally/ the reason I bought the damn game. I just finished Doom 2016 and it was so inspirational for my own game engine, giving me motivation by seen what I can achieve. Doom Eternal is fucking depressing from a technical standpoint
Well at least I know now that my own AA solution is viable and that I can do better than a AAA studio :emotionless-shrug-guy:8 -
I've just closed a shitload of issues on three different projects.. my head is exploding and I just want to relax a bit.. So while I was sitting on my regular private place, sipping on my beer... I was checking my Projects folder and found old personal project of mine from before 4 years or so.. its been an hour and 3 beers.. It looks so much easier now than when I began it.. and yeah.. Somehow maybe useful some day.. app that gathers my emails and checks for bills for electricity and etc. Just to sort all this stuff out you know. Well who knew that it could be so relaxing?16

Boss: Alright so after lunch can you show me all the changes you've made for project x?
Me: there haven't been any visible changes to it so it looks exactly the same as when I showed you at the end of the day yesterday. Just reorganised the code a bit.
Boss: Well, refresh my memory anyway.

~2 years ago:
Me: Managed to figure out how to port that library. Just need designs and then we can build feature X. I've tested it in ugly developer-y screens. It works fully
Boss: Thats awesome, saw the video, looks great. This is a really important feature, thanks for looking into this
~1.5 years ago:
Me: Ok i've started working on the designs, just FYI we don't have designs for feature X
Boss: Ok, must have slipped, noted
~1 year ago:
Me: I've seen more posts about users wanting apps with features X in it. Still don't have designs, we working on that?
Boss: I'll check with design
~3 Months ago:
Boss: Ok were going to have to get serious about pulling features out and reducing MVP so we can get this out there. I think feature A, D, Y and X have to be dropped for v1. Theres too much left to do on them
Me: sure
~1 week ago:
Boss: We need to start getting ready for xxxxx. Can you do me a favour and start writing up some developer docs etc, kind of like this one we did for this other project
This morning opening my emails from last night:
Boss: I've reviewed the doc, looks good, only minor things need tweaking. Let me ask you something though, you said feature X was pulled out and its "pending design work". Its not only pending design work is it? Is it that far along?
==========
What I actually replied:
Yes ... i've sent you videos of it functional in the past, and discussed this ... more than once. Just design ... and some testing of the new designs obviously
==========
What that meant:
Yes. May god have mercy on your soul if you reply anything even remotely close to "oh I had no idea, lets revisit adding this to v1". I will not be held accountable for my actions1 -
This is how Pokémon Go shows errors to its users. It says a generic „Error“ in German with different numbers for different errors.
I am not an UX expert, but isn’t this a really bad practice? The error number has no meaning to the user, so why displaying it? I think it is just confusing and looks ugly 😐8 -
There. I fixed the bug. Tested every way possible 10 times and it won’t break. I’m awesome.
Tells a tester I have a phone with the new app-version installed for testing on my desk when he has time.
He just... came to my room. I gave him the phone. He looks at it, does SOMETHING and just ”Ya man, I broke it”.... whaaaat O.o2 -
I am completely exhausted in every regard possible. Been working between 14 and 18 hours 7 days for about 3 months for a fucking stupid uni project. Amazingly, my phisical health has more or less kept up with that. The deadline is next friday and it looks like we're going to make it, but at this point I feel like an empty bag of flesh moving around. After the deadline I have 6 days to study for an extremely hard exam and I hate every single moment if this all. This morning I nearly cried just because I missed a bus that comes every 20 min. Please send endurance!!11

A morbid realization (I am just wasting your time keep scrolling)
Unless someone takes a stand for the user, and their comfort and requirements, unless someone looks a client straight in the eye and says "no, I will not do that, and neither will my team" and denies them their request, nothing will change, good devs will keep losing their spark to save themselves frustration, good people will walk away and the tyranny that we face daily grows... unless someone stands up, someone who cannot be knocked down, or reprimanded and told they're wrong for fighting for what's right.. unless someone stands up for what is right and fair... nothing changes... and nothing ever will... poor programs, bad games and content, lower standards, frustrated users, annoyance that you don't matter as a user or a dev will never go away... unless someone says enough. But no one will, money is the boss, morality a liability, and people an abundant resource. This world is backwards, devs are carrying the blame and no one who is able, cares enough to say "that's enough!".13 -
Since apparently lots of you are into Linux, I would like some advice.
I'm wanting to install a distro to use as my main OS, but there is just too much choice.
I'm coming from Windows 10 so I read that KDE is a good choice for a desktop environment and the Plasma version looks pretty good.
Yesterday I've tried Deepin OS but I'm not a huge fan, looks good but not enough content / customization.
So right now I'm hesitating between Manjaro (with KDE) and Elementary OS.
Would you recommend any of these, and why ?
Btw, this is my first rant 😎18 -
Me setting up Webpack for a project
Error: can't resolve ./src
Guess what? ./src exists. So I go searching for an answer, and it turns out webpack looks for ./src/index.js and if it can't find it then it throws an error.
But the error message is: can't resolve ./src
The issue was reported ages ago but webpack devs never improved the error message
THIS IS WHY WEBPACK SUCKS 💩
Yes it might seem like a little detail but it just makes it all the more obvious that Webpack sucks right from the start when you set up a project the error message is stupid and unspecific3 -
I use this timer app... probably more than most people (for food). It works fine and looks nice but the undismissable warning message is a real eyesore. Why not just let me dismiss the message.... why...2

With the winter months fast approaching I am putting serious consideration into smuggling a blanket into my desk drawer after hours so that when it gets really cold due to the a/c, I can just whip out the blanket and code at work wrapped up like a burrito.
Yes, for sure, there will be looks, but I don't much care and it'll also be the day remembered as the day someone brought blankets into work.3 -
APPLE IM GONNA BURN YOU WITH GASOLINE.
So i want to send my build to app store, from my iphone.
I want to log into iTunesConnect.
"It just works"
Yeah, right. Login page for itunesconnect does not render correctly on Safari web browser, on iphone, login arrow is not visible, and elements are scattered around.
Grrrrrrr.
On Google Chrome, it looks okay!!!!!!!!!!!
Spartaaaaaaaaaa.
After some tapping on screen, and rotating the device, i somehow found invisible arrow and managed to sign in.
BUT. Once inside i was unable to complete the process because UI refuses to scroll down :(

Whats the big appeal of macs. I know there good for graphical use and social media but Linux looks just as good and it dosent cost a few thousand. And then there's windows.33

Will try to keep that one short.
So we have internal system for active QR codes, nothing really special, as you could imagine. I wrote it when I was beginner but it works and is heavly battle-tested.
Today JBOG (just bunch of guys) come in and try to BS me that something is showing up wrongly for someone.
I check things up, nothing looks out of the order, I go there, everything looks fine too, and they say that yeah but this printed certificate's QR dosen't match what some QR with this name is within the system...
Short invastigation. TL;DR, someone who was rendering/printing these certificates had bunch of these codes with names like
30. ABC
31. ABC
32. ABC
And just casually missclicked...
And to come to that conclusion they need fucking backend dev to confirm that code last 1.5 year didnt magically change, and to destroy their magical belief that it's code's fault.
No, someone fucking missclicked. Whole magic. Usually problem is between chair and keyboard, get fucking used to it. Now, having that settled, let me get back to my work. -
For fucking fuck sake I fucking hate those dense motherfuckers with professor degrees from university. Lazy shmucks.
How, HOW, can you, as a sentient human being, force anybody to use Netbeans for the fucking final project? Two SOAP services, two REST services and PHP for communication? In Netbeans!? WTF. You didn't even teach us PHP for fuck sake. Why can't I choose technology I'm using!?
And to top it all of, Netbeans is the worst IDE I've ever used. I'd rather kill myself with a spoon than use for even one more project. How can ANY TEACHER use it for lectures and tasks? Using it teaches you fucking nothing, because it's generating code for you. It makes you braindead when you just look at it. It's works like shit and looks like shit.
P.S.
I hope that devTea's swear-words blocker will have some fun with this rant.16 -
The worst interview . . . .
So I wasn't looking for a job, but I wasn't happy in mine, and I would listen to pitches. Recruiter calls me about a Java job. I tell him I know JS and it's probably not a good fit. He insists my resume looks good and that they are happy to train. I know just enough Java to relent. Eventually we set up an phone interview for a day I happen to have off anyway because I'm going out of town. Morning of, I'm waiting around for the call. An hour after the scheduled time, the recruiter calls and tells me they had an "emergency" and wouldn't be able to speak today. One whole hour of my day, making me late to leave town: no one anywhere in the whole company could give me a call, no explanation, no apologies, for a job I had told them I wouldn't be a good fit for anyway.
I left them hanging the rest of the weekend and then take my name out of the running on Monday. Respect people's time and lives!4 -

Ughhh
I hate fucking school books,
My students get their books from the school, they got a 2014 edition, I got them from my employer, I got the 2019 edition.
"How different could they be?"
Totally different, the chapters are in a different order(Who learns classes before loops and conditions???) everything is different. "Okay", you might say, "surely it's just just a few pages prior or later right?"
No!
"So open your books on page 69(lol)" *Starts explaining*
Students: *Look confused* "ehm, Soldier? Are you sure that's the right page? I don't see the table"
Me: "Lemme check I'm not wrong" *Looks at the book* "Yeah, page 69, you see the table at the bottom?"
Student: "No?" *Shows me book*
Me: "Wait, that's not what I have, can you show me the book?"
*Looks at book, it's a completely different subject and chapter*
*Goes to ToC, finds the place where the table is*
It's on page fucking 98, this happens for a few more times.
"Okay forget the book, I guess I'l just draw everything on the board for now."
Fuck you book publishers or whoever is responsible for this cashgrab of planned obsolescence.5 -
Does anybody else think the new expressions are nice and all, but most of them are not really made for those small avatars we have?
most often it looks like the person is about to ask me about how they got their scars or they are making fun of asian eyes while laughing about it
it looks great once you zoom in on the profile, but on the smaller size version it just looks odd
there is some exceptions that actually look great on the small avatars too, but most of them don't8 -
Got an assignment in school to make an easy project in c for embedded real time processors with a free complexity level (it was really early in the course and many had never been programming before).
Since I've been working a few years in development I decided to create an own transmitter and receiver for an own protocol between processors (we had just spent a week to understand how to use existing protocols, but I made my own).
The protocol used only 1 line to communicate with half-duplex and we're self adjusting the syncing frequency during the transmission. I managed to transmit data up to 1 kbps after tweaking it a bit (the only holdback was the processors clock frequency).
Then I got the feedback from our teacher, which basically said:
"Your protocol looks like any other protocol out there. Have you considered using an UART?"
Like yeah, I see the car you built there looks like any other car out there, have you considered using a Volvo instead?1 -
"So the client just asked when we will have [feature] ready for testing."
*Confused looks*
Turns out the project/account *forgot* to tell us about a major feature that the client wanted. I should get paid extras for miracles.1 -
So I mentioned before that I managed to beat the ATS system for one job posting and got an immediate interview invite.
They one upped me by sending me to a video interview with an AI. It's supposed to analyze my facial expressions and determine if I'm worthy of being hired.
Got a rejection email just now.
So after all that hard work, looks like Skynet didn't like me very much 😛.6 -
(On the phone)
Internet Provider Support: "Hello, how can I help you?"
Me: "Hi, I've been unable to connect to internet for the past few hours and-
IPS: "Haven't you heard the pre-recorded message?!"
Me: "Uh... No? I'm sorry, but no message was played before you answered."
ISP: "Well, internet services are experiencing technical issues in your whole area. We'll contact you soon as it's resolved." *Hangs up*
...The company then proceeded to state that everything was fine, after a few hours. On their website. Without specifying how to manually restore the connection at all, since apparently this was needed.
...Great job?
This looks kinda dumb to me but... Is it just me?6 -
Yes this is a rant about parents and work but I don't care!
So looks like my parents are going to kick me out because I don't have a full time job and according to them, I'm not looking...
I currently work in retail and have for the past 5 years and started working day 1 that I could have, been applying for IT positions when I'm one of the highest qualified on my area but get turned down so they can pay a teenager half the amount, apply for big retail chains that are "always hiring" like Coles, woolies and Kmart, get turned fucking down.
Don't qualify for government assistance as I'm just out of the earnings bracket, can't afford my own places, don't have my licence yet so I'm fucked...
But hey, atleast my parents will be rid of me and just dis-own me like my middle brother until I have a kid or they need tech support.
Why is getting work so fucking hard when you're qualified, I'm willing to even be a call centre guy but as soon as job possibilities come up I get fucked over time and time again -,-2 -
I prefer functional style programming because it is easier to me to think in modules and functional hierarchies than it is object style shierarchies.
All in all, languages like F# and Clojure have always been fascinating to me. I wish I could find a use case for Haskell, but I can't. If anything F# is awesome to me because I already know .NET and really dig the entire framework, the strides made by Core are outstanding.
I had tried Scala before and just couldn't get into it. Far easier to just stick to Java even if I hate the idea of extending classes all over the place.
Ocaml is interesting too, but I know little to nothing about it, and Elixir looks far too much like Ruby for my taste even if I do like Ruby.
Choice is good, but sometimes overwhelming14 -
Anyone else hate their Macbook Pro 2018? RIGHT after the return policy the speakers start acting like it has fucking tourette's, plus my machine randomly SHUTS DOWN.
Apple Store "Genius": "Yup, we gotta send it in for repair, 10 business days."
10 business days without my work laptop, gee thanks asshole, at least be a little more empathetic about it.
My 2015 Macbook Pro gave me ZERO problems. The only reason why I upgraded was that compiling took forever (React Native).
If I didn't have to work with Xcode I would just sell this thing and buy a PC laptop. (The Surface book looks nice =))10 -
Just switched to Kotlin.. For the first like 10 minutes I was like "What is this shit?!" and then I found Java to Kotlin converter and docs. Yay! Looks like it´s not gonna be that hard to do some apps in it.. Hopefully4

People calling themselves "Thought Leaders" on LinkedIn.
Torn between wanting to know what the fuck this means and knowing that the answer will doubtless make me lose even more faith in humanity.
The one I just saw referred to as such (probably by himself) is that Simon Sinek goof who went viral a while back for saying that all millennials are useless lazy dopamine junkies because their parents spoiled them beyond repair. He looks like the kind of gold-plated twat who would definitely consider himself a Thought Leader, even though 'millennials are a bit lazy' is the kind of insight you can get down your local pub from the guy who'd otherwise be trying to sell you tickets to a dog fight.
How do you qualify as a Thought Leader? Do you just need to dress like salesman of the month, or do you actually need to be good at anything?
I love LinkedIn.10 -

It looks surprisingly simple to get up and running for a no-code automation tool, just wondering if there's any communal reviews on them before I jump deep inside.question automation tool maybe i can get commissions out of them seriously - anyone use this? n8n.io this is not a sponsored ad sorry floyd no code7 -

Hey there 👋
I am more or less throwing any burden (WhatsApp, Facebook, Google etc.) out of my life. Of course I will continue using the Google account for YouTube and some games that need it.
That's what it looks like right now:
Raspberry Pi 3B+
✅ webserver
- forum - complete (atm just for me)
- blog - no ideas and just installed october cms and nothing done yet
- nextcloud - complete and filled with my porn... eeh... data
✅ mailserver
(missing spamassassin, clam or sth. like this but it's working 😂)
✅ matrix-synapse
(as an additional alternative to messengers)
______________
Raspberry Pi 2
✅ catches dust
(any ideas?)
Of course, many more configurations and the like are necessary before everything is ready... but what then or what else is there?
At the moment I still use WhatsApp. Just wanna take time before sending everyone a message about changing the messenger and that it should be important for thinking about the own privacy, which alternatives there are bla...
Edit: For passwords I'm using Myki - didn't hear anything bad about it yet and it's very easy to use (Firefox add-on, Android app).
I love my passwords with 200 characters 😂
Maybe someone's knowing more about them?
Hope I didn't forget a thing... thanks in advance aaaaaaand... I'm gone. ☺23 -
Oops, looks like "Benedict Cumberbatch" just broke your unrealistic design specs and spotlights your non-inclusive cognitive bias, designer. Maybe stop using "John Smith" as mock design data for users' names and design things for real people.
Developers should not be paying down your design debts. Fix this!
Sincerely, the UI developer doing your job6 -
Just when I was getting used to working from home, my stupid friend made my life even more hell.
I live in a 1 bhk apartment. It's just enough for 3 guys to live comfortably. Now this stupid friend has brought in 3 of his friends since lockdown started and it looks like they are here to stay unless offices start functioning again.
I'm not a smoker and I don't like drinking every other day. Ever since his friend's moved in, it smells like I'm living in a chimney and they drink evey other day.
I don't like their lifestyle or work ethics. I try to blend in but it's a hell here for me trying to focus on my work and goals.
I'm just lucky they haven't brought in any corona yet.
I'm currently interviewing for a new job and I hope it will help me get out of this shit hole as soon as possible.
I have declined their offer for me to drink because I really want this new job. Now, I'm that odd guy in the group who doesn't drink or smoke.

You all complaining about shit code from coworkers and about fucking WordPress. Looks different, but know what? Answer is the same.
Money.
Let me explain.
For example, you were born in USA. You can choose any profession, and if you became pro - you will be payed great. Looks nice, isn't it?
But if you were born in Russia, India, somewhere in Africa, whatever, you can be businessman, coder or you can suck a dick to the end of you life.
Not that great, yeah?
You are looking around and see great people with their own dreams and talents. But then you ask them "to which faculty are you going?" Answer is obvious. And that's how shitcoders are born.
And yeah, about WordPress. I'm mobile developer, I just can't understand how awful it is (or not, idunno). The only thing I know - if I were PHP developer, I could earn twice more than now. But why I didn't choose that way? Because I REALLY LOVE MY WORK. Everyday is good, I'm working at weekends often, because I want.
So please, shut up. You could never work with WordPress, but you motherfucker CHOOSE IT. You could switch to node, go, Java. Why the flying fuck you didn't? Oh yeah, MONEY. So please, shut up.
Devrant isn't for crying girls complaining about shit they did themselves. (No sexism, just metaphor, sorry girls)10 -
Automation always fascinated me. Not only it looks and behaves like a life form, it also can perform billions of calculations without making a single mistake while I can’t even multiply double-digit numbers with my double-digit IQ.
If you pick the right components, you can make an immortal, perfect machine that can do its job for centuries, even millennia without a single mistake. There is nothing else on earth that can do this.
There is a robot surgeon and its hands never shake. It’s just flawless. If it fucks up, there is only you to blame, the flawed, pathetic operator.
And now it’s time to remember that it was just a 40s technology all along. And now it’s time to remember that now there is machine learning. A whole new perspective isn’t it. All the mistakes that machines make are sitting in front of the monitors.
No wonder I decided to be an engineer.17 -
Today the struggle was real.
But damn if it isn't days like this where you learn real shit.
Fighting with a debian VM for half the day to make a local development environment. I'm tired, but everything works, the project looks good, and I'm just sorta angry/tired/proud now.
I learned so much, and now want pie. I am going to go eat some pie.3 -
PCs are a clusterfuck these days. Microsoft has abandoned the niceness of Win-7 and opted for Win-10 - with spyware, untested forced updates and forced online licence checks to make sure you have to get the shit. Macs are total crap, and Apple doesn't care because they instead prefer to milk customers with overpriced iShit. Linux sucks and looks like a Soviet tractor, but at least, it doesn't fuck up itself just by switching it on.
I had Linux as only OS from 2001 to 2010, and while I obviously can deal with it, I finally hated it enough to switch over to Win-7. From 2020 on, it looks like I will be back because Microsoft has managed to fuck up Windows even worse (and then these suckers wonder why Github users don't trust them). Maybe I'll buy a Tux when I install Linux so that I can punch it in the face.
Progress was yesterday - today it's about damage control. Welcome to a world where the brightest CS guys are thinking about how not only to shove up even more ads into peoples' asses, but how to also transmit lab data of the poo.7 -
Microsoft, do you even care what your shitty updates are doing or have you just given up?
Not only did the update start immediately after waking up from standby, it also had to brighten up my day by deleting everything afterwards.
Turns out the anniversary update gets confused by dual boot systems and then just deletes all partitions. And apparently they didn't manage to fix this for months now.
Can't wait for the coming "Creator's update", always wanted to see how an exploding PC looks.1 -
We spent a lot of time creating these CSS animated pop-ups that described parts of the product. They looked great, but the client called and said they were "flickering" on her computer. We debugged and could not for the life of us figure out what she meant by flicker. The code was so simple that we couldn't imagine how it could be flickering. It was just a jQuery fadeIn(). It worked fine for us in every browser we tried. So we just gave up. The next day, the client called back and said,"Hey, it looks great. You fixed the flickering. How did you do it?" And our dev replied, "Uh, we set the flicker to 0".6

"What's the best browser that doesn't devour all of my HW resources?"
Seriously guys, Opera GX. You can set how much ram and cpu it eats, and it only eats that much. Yes, even to the point of it being unresponsive and laggy, because it keeps itself within the boundaries you set.
Seriously. Regardless of the number of tabs.
Also, it looks nice.
Downsides: You forget WHY it lags sometimes, so you get irritated, but when you remember, the irritation turns to smile.

Here I am just tryna browse a site and this stupid attempt to trick me into falling for a scam pops up. There is no way to stop the pop up because I can’t tap anything fast enough. Not even restarting the browser because it remembers this as the last URL it had accessed. Looks like I have to uninstall and reinstall chrome. Honestly, if you’re a scammer, what the hell is the point of doing this? What idiot is going to call the number? All it does is annoy you to the point of suspicion. Mgr: composer require. That's all you're allowed to do. I want you to manually go through our word press site, check which ones need an update. And do a composer require in the command line for each to update them.
Me: wouldn't it make more sense to just increment the version in the composer.json and then run update?
Mgr: no, you don't understand how composer works, it's very complicated. Just do require. Don't ever do update.
Me: *does it anyway (reverting later of course) and compares update vs require and their differences in the lock file*
I mean it looks like 'update' is updating important dependencies for each of the packages as well as the package itself... The 'require' just seems to download the package itself but no updates to dependencies for those packages.
But seriously is composer that complicated that I can't just do an 'update'?
I've been reading the composer documentation and it seems to be saying that update is the better way to go...
I'm doubting myself these days...12 -
So I was planning on a single page website for my relatives hotel websitte and offered to make it for free ( as an offer for other huge project i was doing for same person )
But just got told that one of my uncle told to tell me that website design should like the website design of another hotel xyz.
For second, I thought that other would be very nice. So I checked it out.
Guess what! That other site looks like it hasn't updated since 2005! No HTTPS. No responsive design. Looks like fugly crap from 2005 to me. Has a huge Click to enable Adobe Flash banner on homepage.
I lost my hope in humanity and I quoted a price for making that. I guess I just gotta do a shit job and will get paid for it now 😂2 -

Our investor has "ideas" on features and things that will significantly change the information we have to include in our code.
We are suppose to launch Jan,1 2019
He says I'll Call you tonight to give you the details so you will be ready for tomorrows meeting. .........

yep never calls.
Fucking Awesome! can't wait to tell my team tomorrow. "glad you all came in today, looks like we have to change somethings I'm just not sure what yet."
Maybe I'll order pizza and beer to the office and we will all play video games until he shows up. and say if you aren't going to take this seriously why should we.

Here's how it usually goes:
1) I estimate the different aspects of the assignment to the best of my abillities, based on customer criteria and information. I come up with an realistic estimate for development and testing.
2) My PM runs the numbers through an algorithm. It adds time for other stuff, but its all still very fair and in tune.
Now to the fucked up part.
3) My ceo and cto looks at the estimate, and he will just turn on every possible button and twist the estimate into what he thinks he can get the customer to pay🤢🤮
This ends in the customer saying - no thank you.
He comes back to us and does not understand why they declined.
Idiot! -
Ahh.. there is nothing like the joyous feeling of writing a working piece of code for your own personal projects.
I spent several weeks and a few hours today to finally get my Python automation script working and I am very proud of myself.
Here's what it does:
* open a text file, extract a specific string from it using rather complicated xpath
* open another text file and do the same
* replace result 1 with result 2
* log results
* close file
* automate the process
Even though it looks easy, I had to mess around with a lot of problems such as permissions, indentation, stream writing, file status, etc.
Now, instead of having to manually do this job, I can just let my machine do it!1 -
So it looks like my 80+ yr old grandma finally managed to get hang of her touch screen smartphone. She was recently set up with WhatsApp.
She has called me quite a few times today and when i ask what's up, she says she is just testing it out. It's so cute *-* and makes me happy to know she has learned to use it and called me.
I wonder how it must feel for her to be able to use this technology which was probably never even imagined during her young age. -
Today we launched the website that I’ve been working on for months. But the stress and fatigue of everything else (my personal life, the sleepless nights) got to me. Even though I got it done and it looks great, all I can focus on is how I ended the project. How I let the frustration of everything get to me. I just needed to get that off my chest.1

Alrighty, saturday morning rant time!
I just recieved a mail from one of my not-so-much-loved colleagues.
Now Background first: I work in IT-Support. We provide services for other companies. One of those services is monitoring servers and clients for various things. I recently took over the project (was assigned to do it) and restructured everything, wrote new scripts to test more stuff, successfully tested it internally and rolled it out over the last 2 weeks.
Now one of these scripts hooks into the Windows Update API and looks at the update history. It filters for known Windows Update Agent strings (UpdateOrchestrator, AutomaticUpdates and AutomaticUpdatesWuApp in case you also want to do something like this) and then looks for installation errors over the last 24 hours and wherever there have even been any successful updates over the last one and a half months.
Back to that mail.
My colleague sent me this lovely mail about a ticket i opened about his customers servers beeing all out-of-date on updates.
"This is all wrong, everything's fine. I disabled the checks."
...
It's on bitch.
So i logged on to my work PC via TeamViewer, opened my script, connected to the customer and was ready to debug the shit out of my script, knowing i probably won't even need to.
I looked at the update history via Windows Update itself and behold: 1st April. That's almost 50 days in the past.
So the script works, go figure.
Great, so search for new Updates then.
>None found.
Hm. What could it be? Did my super special colleague forget to care about his very special totally-needs-WSUS-customer WSUS again?
Yup.
Online-Search finds a ton of new Updates.
Screenshot, write pissed mail to colleague, re-enable checks, breakfast.1 -
Guess what guys, I'm installing Ubuntu over Arch, because I need change and I just don't give a shit about distro elitism. Like many others, I got my start on Ubuntu (was probably Hardy Heron), and then I have done some hoppin' ever since. I never wanted to go back to plain Ubuntu because you know.., but fuck that, its perfect for what I need on my shitty laptop which I do nothing more than watch shitty livestreams on.
I also need something which looks vaguely caught up to 2019 GUI standards while expending max 13 kcal in the process (already spent a fair share with KDE). The 13 is for deleting the Amazon shortcut.9 -
So, today in the office we all decided chipotle for lunch. We create the team order and sent it out to the entire office.
First thing we noticed: online ordering looks really good and has finally been updated.
Second thing we noticed: it never got tested and it doesn't work
Result: 7 angry developers who just wanted some burrito bowls start emailing chipotle tech support3 -
How on earth are there people in their second year of a computer science course who are unable to understand how to read build errors. It's honestly not that hard, just look at the fucking build log and see where the error is and what type of error it is, but yet they don't bother reading the log and say that their "compiler is broken" when their 5 line code won't work.
If this was still first year I'd understand since many of the class didn't have much programming knowledge, but if you're in your second year and you struggle with this (that too for a Hello World script) it looks like you aren't even bothered and just expect the computer to magically understand what you mean.3 -
Why the hell are they teaching Python for web backend purposes at my school??? PHP ist just faster, needs less ressources and looks syntacially like a beast.4

So I was just informed I have 40 tickets with my name on them. No big deal normally except that I had no idea and was scheduling based on the fact that I knew I had 25 on my plate and most of them were OBE. How did I find this out you ask? Well rather than updating the tickets in our ticket tracking system, my PM updated a spreadsheet that is out in no man's land. So it looks like I have been doing no work for the last 3 months when in reality I have been busting my ass to get shut done and fixed. Why even have a ticket tracking system?

I've spent many years in a bubble of 1 backend lang.. but when i started checking out other langs, I got very annoyed that each one has same basic stuff but with different syntax... Can we just agree on something? Ffs!
We really couldnt come up with unified syntax for -
false, False FALSE
OR or ||
def func function
And dont get me started on all the variations of for loops... Its like we are trying make our life hard
Looking at new versions of some langs, looks like they are copying new stuff from one another.. with different syntax.. thanks!
Nodejs trying to look more like she doesnt have callbacks.. while other langs adding callback functionality... Why why why?!2 -
Boss needs certain stats pulled from database once a year for board meeting. This time I delegate it to a junior dba/sysadmin. He looks at my 3-year-old docs that I hastily jotted down and pasted and included my rambling notes with results from way back then. Mostly they were just to jog my own memory, not to be a really neat, clean instruction guide. He does the queries correctly, but in ticket for boss he pastes also all my notes from the docs. boss gets confused, "what is this other number, I don't get it?!" We have to have a meeting of the 3 of us and waste an hour or so just to figure out what went wrong, finally I realize what junior guy accidentally did. Moral of story: to avoid baffling the nontechs, always simplify, simplify, simplify. Alternate moral of story: before delegating a task that seems old hat to you, always review your notes/docs and make sure they're ready for someone else to use them.1

Wouldn't say our teamwork failed we just sucked that day.
I had a ticket to fix a SQL sp and then correct some data afterwards. As this was the typical "urgent fix need now" we went through a different process for fixing it.
Me: Just sent you some scripts can you check them over before we apply it to uat?
Boss: let's go through it together.
5 mins later
Boss: looks fine I'll apply the scripts.
2 minutes later
Me: did you apply the scripts to uat?
Boss: No I applied them to live.
Me: oh ... oh no.
At this point I realized I was missing a critical where clause so yup my update was applied against all of the data.
Boss: oh
Yup he just spotted my error.
Helpdesk phones start ringing
Boss: you pick it up it's your code
Me: hey you applied its your problem now.
One db restore and several incident meetings later we fixed it. Twas a fun day.1 -
Alright, it looks like everyone at this bank, a client, I work for will now start avoiding me. I'm usually the only person that takes the time to review PRs and give a feedback. Everyone just seem to click accept because they can't be bothered.
A few months down the line, they begin to wonder why there is so many tech all over the place.
Good luck to anyone that wants me to review their PRs. I pledge to continue to take the time to review PRs and give feedback. I will not be pressured to click the accept button on what I perceive to be sub-optimal code. So help me God.2 -
After all those years, I finally understood what makes Half-Life 2 so immersive.
From the very beginning, as the game teaches you things about itself, you discover that every model is made with you in mind. The barrel is just tall enough to jump on it, but not taller. The big crate's size is calculated precisely for you to jump onto it from a small crate. Ladders are comfortable for you to climb on. Everything in this game world designed around you, the human.
…except for combine constructions.
They're awkward to walk around. You keep lowkey clipping into them. Half-transparent armor fence looks like you can jump over it, but you can't. It's just a bit taller than that, on purpose. Combine towers are hard to climb onto. You keep bumping into things. Once you locate the ladder and climb all the way up, you bump your head into the ceiling. You don't have much room for movement on top. Combine walls have an inconclusive, uncomfortable physics model that is very annoying to interact with. If you run into it and jump, you clip into it just enough to stop your movement instantly.
This hammers in the message — combines aren't human. Their constructions aren't meant for humans. This was my biggest discovery the last time I played Half-Life 2.
HL2 is a strong contender to be my favorite game of all time.11 -

I just spent a whole day learning wordpress cause it's mandatory for my graduation project and I'm still not quite sure what I'm doing.

I hate React. I keep reading that people have problem of grasping it, but that's not the case for me. I get it, I understand it, but I hate with passion HOW it's done knowing how nice it's done elsewhere. What really triggers me is how ugly it looks, both from architecture and code level. To me it really say a lot when even code shown in documentation looks ugly, and while reading it you ask ourself constantly "why it's done this way?". When I read React being called an "elegant" solution something explodes in me. Did you saw Svelte? Vue? Damn, even Alpine.js?
I just cannot how overengineered this API is. Even doing simplest things there produces so much junk code written only because this is what library requires. Why? I feel like working with it is a punishment.
And scalability and maintainability? I've never seen large-scale projects more messed up than those wrote with React. And yes, you can blame teams working on them for lack of skills, but it is the library which encourages or not good practices also, and I've never seen such bad situation with other libraries/frameworks.8 -
Somebody is onto me.
This week, I received a suspicious email claiming to reset my apple account password.

Some cheapskate insists on writing a guide to selfhost <software> on Heroku and wants to add it to the official documentation, promising to maintain it (since none of the other devs are using or planning to use Heroku). I volunteer to give them a chance on grounds of it being high quality and maintained by that person in the future which they both promise.
Our docs are written as markdown files on github.
So here we go:
Starts a pull request: uploads their """guide""" as a docx. The content is completely unformatted, basically just an enumerated list.
Tell them to format it as markdown, suggest using github gists.
They go ahead and copy pasta their unformatted list into a gist.txt "allright i made it into gist for ya"
Tell them that they did not format it as markdown.
"sorry updated it in markdown :P"
I look at the file, it is still raw text in a gist.txt. Maybe a bit more spaced out, not that I would care to notice any changes at this point.
Tell them it is still not markdown and link them to a perfect example of another guide that takes advantage of code fragments for commands etc and is properly rendered since it uses .md
"I updated it to the markdown this time XP Can you give me some suggestions on how it looks?"
"How it looks"... "how it LOOKS"... I click the link for the 5th time and IT IS STILL JUST A RAW FUCKING GIST.
Jfc that person has some serious reading/thinking disability. To imagine them to be proactively keeping their guide up to date in the future is absolutely impossible. At that point I pulled out my support for the request since it was already taking more effort to even get a readable version of guide than I estimated for the whole process of adding it.
Oh, and one of the steps originally suggested in the """guide""" was adding the credentials file into the vcs.2 -

I think I may be ending my distro hopping here (for a while anyway). Linux Lite looks pretty good, seems stable, isn't bloated af, works good OOTB (finally, a distro other than Ubuntu in which WiFi works just fine), and is decently hackable. I've been using it on and off for a bit, finally replaced Manjaro with it.7 -
I administer Atlassian stack instance (among zillion other things, of course). Once I've got an issue about login problem:
"I can login to Confluence, but not to Jira, could you help me?"
Looking into projects configuration, into user's permission groups in Crowd (both apps are connected, it will be important in a moment)... Everything looks good. Wtf?
Suddenly, I've got this idea:
"What username do you use in Jira?"
"My username."
"What about Confluence login?"
"My email."
Realization in 3... 2... 1...
Wait for it...
Just a little more tension...
"Nevermind, thank you!"
Remember, guys, always give them a chance. Plan for the worst, but hope for the best. And I wish you all only such issues! :-D -
After previous rant (https://lynkz.me/9xAFVZ9) he told me to be as close as possible to the design from the designer. There was on the left side a BarCode, which made no sense. So I didn’t add it. Now today (saturday) he told me I need to add the barcode because it looks classy. I told him we had a QR code already with same data. His anwser, yeah but it looks better with Barcode added too. Just f*** off! Your classy, shitty barcode will have a great price as it’s weekend. Thanks @linuxxx for the url shortner, it’s awesome!9

After the servers got shut down because someone used them for illegal advertisement, after me putting in 30-35 hours a week on the side of my studies. Since it was my job to keep them running and doing DevOps work, they just slowly froze me out of the company without even firing me. I even asked them what I should be working on then. Their answer was of course: you can make us some advertising landing pages. Can you make one that looks like Facebook?
Nope, just fucking nope. -
Looks like Google forgot how to do good UX / UI design.
1.
Why is the text in the appbar black, but all other icons (including the lock inside the textview) white. It would make sense, if the lock would be black too (as the textview is abit lighter than the appbar).
2.
Maps was way easier to use, before they invented MD Refresh. When you tap on a point on the map you get that info view at the bottom of the screen. Before it was a draggable window, which could be maximized with a swipe. Now you have to tap it, the box goes away and a new window appears, which is just the same as before MD-Refresh.
3.
In "Google Tasks" the activity title is not centered for some reason.12 -
sitting at work handjamming xml, turn around and tell my senior dev"it would be great if i could write a program to just search this folder and grab all the names for me..." he looks at me like like i have about 20 heads and am an idiot, after about 2 minutes of staring at me he remembers im fairly new and just tells me its super easy in C#... so i learned C# real quick. Anything to make my job easier right?2

Who the duck designed the common app interface? It's bloody awful just straight up awful. Why do you have to click out and then click back in to delete your previous search? Like wtf. Also when they ask for parents' country of birth but it isn't on the drop-down lousy because it didn't exist. It just looks like some lazy programmers did the bars minimum not caring about how it'd look or be to use because yknow duck that. Wow ok I'm done.1

From perfectly working scrum team to... Don't know what it is now...
Long story short - our SM left company and our team have ongoing "reorganization", our tester leaving at the end of this month, probably we will be out of tester for next month...
I don't mean reorganization, it's normal thing, but... It looks like it's slowly collapsing under bad head decisions (one of them is the reason why our tester is leaving)... Multiple "side" projects / tasks for ppl in team and problems with delivering sprint tasks on time because of it, context switching etc.
I fucking like this project, it gives me much opportunities to learn new things and design new features - it's up to us how we will implement it. Client is satisfied with our work and we worked for their trust for long time. But if things will be going same way as now, we will probably lose it.
How do you think, is it worth to try stay with this project? Or should I update CV just in case?6 -
This might just be me and my OCD talking, but am I the only one who gets super annoyed with sloppy CSS formatting?
So like, if somebody writes a sloppily formatted rule like this without spacing out each property and value:
#signUpButton {color:#FFF;background:#000;float:right;clear:both;padding:5px;position:absolute;top:5px;right:20px;height:100px;width:45px;}
As opposed to something like this, which just looks much cleaner:
#signUpButton { color: #FFF; background; #000; float: right; clear: both; padding: 5px; }
The formatting makes no difference in how the CSS is evaluated and rendered, but I find the spaceless style so ugly and difficult to read/edit, whereas the spaced out style is much more appealing to the eyes and easier to read
I find myself reformatting other people's CSS that works perfectly fine just so it will be easier to read/edit for anybody else that looks at it in the future8 -
Anyone else ever been through an identity crisis? This shit is intense. For the first time in over a decade I'm questioning who I really am and how to be happy while interacting with the world around me.
I used to not give a fuck what people thought about me, my semi-haggard appearance was just part of my persona, but as time marched on and my hair got longer, I get nothing but shitty looks from people 40+. I feel like nobody takes me seriously anymore. I'm honestly debating just chopping off most of my hair and dressing nicer, essentially 'growing up'. Just kind of rolling over and blending in with everyone else. "The nail that sticks out gets hammered down." - I'm tired of getting hammered. I just want to retreat to my quiet little corner of newfound adulthood.4 -
Hey guys and girls, quick question.
Im currently writing my own collection-framework in Go.
It has a Collection-Interface, that looks like this:
Clear()
Size() int
ToSlice() []interface{}
Add(...interface{}) error
Remove(...interface{}) error
Contains(...interface{}) (bool, error)
The library should also contains stuff like stacks and queues, so datastructures, that dont fit that interface perfectly.
So should i write a weird implementation of the interface for them, like Remove for stacks (high pitched internal screaming), or should i just say fuck it, and dont implement the Collection-Interface for these specific types ?3 -
Doing the deployment to production, and towards the end one of the support guys looks over at me;
"So, the website in prod is throwing some errors"
Followed by another guy:
"Yeah I'm getting the same, SQL exceptions on the page"
I stare at them panicked for a moment, when one of them goes "just kidding!". Like dude, my heart just skipped several beats!
Any one here ever had something cruel happen to them during a deployment?3 -
*laughing maniacally*
Okidoky you lil fucker where you've been hiding...
*streaming tcpdump via SSH to other box, feeding tshark with input filters*
Finally finding a request with an ominous dissector warning about headers...
Not finding anything with silversearcher / ag in the project...
*getting even more pissed causr I've been looking for lil fucker since 2 days*
*generating possible splits of the header name, piping to silversearcher*
*I/O looks like clusterfuck*
Common, it are just dozen gigabytes of text, don't choke just because you have to suck on all the sucking projects this company owns... Don't drown now, lil bukkake princess.
*half an hour later*
Oh... Interesting. Bukkake princess survived and even spilled the tea.
Someone was trying to be overly "eager" to avoid magic numbers...
They concatenated a header name out of several const vars which stem from a static class with like... 300? 400? vars of which I can make no fucking sense at all.
Class literally looks like the most braindamaged thing one could imagine.
And yes... Coming back to the network error I'm debugging since 2 days as it is occuring at erratic intervals and noone knew of course why...
One of the devs changed the const value of one of the variables to have UTF 8 characters. For "cleaner meaning".
Sometimes I just want to electrocute people ...
The reason this didn't pop up all the time was because the test system triggered one call with the header - whenever said dev pushed changes...
And yeah. Test failures can be ignored.
Why bother? Just continue meddling in shit.
I'm glad for the dev that I'm in home office... :@
TLDR: Dev changed const value without thinking, ignoring test failures and I had the fun of debunking for 2 days a mysterious HAProxy failure due to HTTP header validation... -

And this is how it starts. I bought a Raspberry Pi 3 B+, quite some time ago. Plain board, just the board and a case. Why? Well, I have no idea. I always wanted one for some reason... and finally got one.
I got a good sd card for it, and flashed raspbian and... now what? What should I do with this?
*Looks up "Cool RPi projects"*
*Nah, I already have a NAS... No, wouldn't really use a media center... play games?*
*Well, let me just install sshd and come back to it later.*
Today, I run pi-hole, jekyll, node, gitd, a ton of other things that ends with d... I am even considering buying an extra one (maybe two).
Now I'm really afraid of what would happen if I give in to the urge of buying sensors and add-on boards.2 -
So the company I work at is moving to a new location. We are a small company, so we were all talking about potential problems with the move - network, internet, firewalls, access to servers and so on. Us trying to cover all possible scenarios.
Our CTO looks up and says: “or we could just cross our fingers and hope for best”.
WTF🤯2 -
Today, my fellows not a rant, but a glimp of blissfully sent client from heaven. Doesn't complain at all. He is not a fuckin jerk, he just trusts my judgment both in code and looks. No one will ask me to adjust some petty thing for some obscure mental fixations! Join me in this party!4

Been interested in trying Polymer for a while so gave it a try today, two hours later now and about to dropkick my laptop!
Followed the "this-looks-super-easy-guide" but that kinda turned into shit when it was time to run gulp!
How the f#*k can it be so hard to find information and get this to work!
Guess I'll just stick with my Android development and forget about this side project because it affects my mood in a bad f#*king way👹5 -
So I work at a startup working on “cutting edge” technology with two other devs. Our lead engineer is an interesting fellow. The guy never ever writes a single line of code, just looks for similar projects online and receives a lot of credit for it, I have to hand it to him though, he has an ability to scheme through information and pick the gist of what’s going on but when it comes to detail, he’s seriously lacking. We recently started a projects a couple of weeks back and it was supposed to be an easy two days of hacking and we would be done but instead the guy looks for code online copies it I change the necessary variables to match the use case then it doesn’t work. So we’ve spent weeks debugging this code because someone is afraid to get their hands dirty. I can’t complain to the bosses because they’re not techies and the trust him more since I’m still new to the company.
I love their attitude though, they honestly believe they have a chance against some giants in tech and from the actual talent I’ve witnessed they’ll only get there through sheer luck.
I have to sit there and listen to them shit on more successful tech companies and that they have better ideas.
Maybe someone can change my mind on this issue as I’m still young and new to this industry.8 -
If you look at the "lightweight business laptops" or business netbooks section of the market you'll notice almost all of them seem to have 4gb
Bitch, thats barely enough to run windows 10.
Looks like a market opening. If I were still doing upgrades and repairs I'd blame everything on low memory (well, a lot of slowness can loosely be attributed to lack of memory) and upsell new machines with more and better ram. Target 6gb, which is cheaper than 8 and offers a minor but noticeable boost, just enough to passably justify the increased cost to whoever is responsible for authorizing the upgrade.
I don't understand whats so hard to grasp about this. It's like companies trip over dollars to pick up dimes.4 -
So, it looks like I'll be hitting age 30 when I finish college, and my heart is torn in two places. On the one hand, a part of me wants to say fuck it and look for a job outside the US, maybe take up a second language. I have the spare time to work at it a couple of hours per day while in school and working on my capstone projects.
But, there's another part of me that says just stay in the homeland and just find a job somewhere in America. This is a huge country with a lot of options for backend/frontend/fullstack development. But I've been doing the same thing and seeing the same sights forever and I'd like something new. But I'm still relatively young and ignorant of countries outside the US. I could end up in more hot water then I bargained for leaving.
I don't know, and that's in a way okay. All I know is I want something different from my status quo. Something that justifies all the education I had to go through.11 -
God damnit!!
Just got a team assigned for the course I follow and the codebase they work looks like someone shit on the floor and dragged it all over place. No consistency, no clear structure.
The project has to be built in PHP (which is fine by the way) following the principles of MVC. Did I say the codebase looks like shit all over the place? Well that's exactly what it is!!
They use $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'] everywhere!! In every fucking file!! Why the FUCK would someone possibly want to do that??
I know I'm not perfect, but what the fuck!!
Now comes the most weird thing. They have to work on a remote server without SSH access, so working with FTP is mandatory. This is because the school won't setup ssh. That's fine by me, but because of that they don't use git!! They upload files directly to the production server. They merge everything manually. I asked why they didn't use git and the answer was so fucking SHIT!! "Because the teacher wants to see who uploaded to the server.."
First off all: what happened to git blame? Second: Later I heard that there is only one FTP account, so all the things they said where just bullshit!!
The fuck.
Tomorrow I'm going to try and convince them to use git..1 -
android development is shitty af, it will make you super zombie computer nerd that sit on his chair for fking several hours just to find the where the fk is null pointer exception is coming from not only this but for all kind of errors, logcat looks like someone just hacking nasa, you know what im the one who is shitty af i would have opt web dev instead of android dev , this retarded studio and emulator takes too much time to just load a simple fking thing & if i make some change in it i've to install that application again ,it's so pathetic and horse shit thing i've ever encountered , kotlin is fun it's actually great language most of the features are so helpful in it,but the google codelabs,it's all documentation , adding dependencies whole concepts are trash imo, why can't we install the dependencies using terminal what's problem in that ,but no they chose the hard way for no fuking reason, i've successfully wasted a year learning this shitty tech stack, hopefully this NY i will choose different stack , will work till ass off .gonna build some cool projects and will eventually try for internships and all. done with android dev, idk how senior dev's are alive in this field6

So,
Im coming from PHP. I feel comfy around PHP.
I needed for other project GO lang (there is no library for what I need to do in PHP, and it's low level thing anyway)
I need dependency that is in form of modules.
Okay, so importing it (just writing import "github.com/blah/blah/v3/blah" as suggested in docs did not work. something something, not found)
Some googling later, I created go.mod file.
And all the hell broke lose. So I am trying to fix that using random stack overflow, IDE highlights entire project on red, go complains it can't find "./" while it looks for it in gopath not project files and claims it's remote repository.
Among other WTFnessness after adding go.mod it suddenly stopped fetching ANY dependencies (including stuff like github.com/pkg/errors ), so, that's fun...
I added go.mod before 9 AM.
It's 13 and Im still wrestling with this
I fail to connect the dots why go lang get's so much praise for it's apparently awesome or something package managment... I find "composer install", and have pretty much guarantee it will work, much easier to wrap my head around.
[edit]
forgot to mention that Im literally starting to learn go. Just cherry on top5 -
BACKLOG REFINEMENT
TeamLeader2: why did you rate this task so high? It should be easy enough
TeamLeader1: you guys have never worked with Angular. We have just started using it seriously and it's really complicated, I know it looks easy from the outside but trust me this whole framework requires a lot of work even for trivial tasks
What's that I hear in the distance? A phone ringing? Someone better pick that up, because I FUCKING CALLED IT

Sometimes Im pretty impressed and envious by the skills of my fellow students.
Usually it looks like this:
me: So Uhm what u got for the <insert class here>?
him/her: Well its pretty simple algorithm which has big O of (Log(n)/1000000) which also mines bitcoin in the meanwhile and yeah, last night I figured out that it now generates electricity...
me: Uhm... My program prints Hello world... But backwards...
Like for real, sometimes I wish I find the motivation, to be awake 2 days straight just bursting with ideas of some crazy shit. Right now Im like 'You see that star behind that cloud? Jup it shines too bright, gotta get some sleep' -> Browsing devrant...2 -
I was on glassdoor today, and a survey came up. The survey looks like market research for a product that sounds like it will be exactly like one of my side projects... Deciding if it's worth scrambling to beat them to market with what's barely a MVP and no marketing resources, or just chalking it up as fun and good experience.6

Just watched Zombieland 2 in the cinema and the dumb blonde girl in the movie was so fucking sweet and adorable and NOT TO EVEN MENTION HOW HOT SHE WAS, but i fucking fell in love with her PERSONALITY, i know its an act but i also know there are people who exist with that personality, this is very weird to me because i fall in love by the looks, rarely by the behavior but i this time i love her because of her personality lol what the fuck is this
I didnt know it was possible to fall in love with someones personality like i dont even have the urge to fuck her just to love her for personality lmao
Aight im talking about this like we are exclusive but it was just a dumb but chill movie10 -

Ok so I keep obsessing over RE2 because the game is just so fucking cool. But one thing that I want to make notice for us computer nerds:
In the police station, when you see the computers there that are on, you see a very 90's interface, and of course you will, the game takes place in 1998.
When you are at the Umbrella NEST facility, there are computers there, the interface looks TODAY modern. Meaning that(and I know we all fans of the games knew this already) Umbrella's tech is far beyond what common civilian entities have. I know this is done intentionally and I know people are aware of it, but I just think that it is a really really REALLY cool element to the story to have something like this.
On another note, I want to get excited about Kingdom Hearts 3. But fuck this it has been so long and I had already forgotten everything about 1 and 2 and I am not really a fan of the series anymore. A friend is coming over to play it, I just wish I was more hyped for it.5 -
so I'm a level developer and I haven't really worked with WordPress that much however I am experienced in HTML CSS PHP JavaScript xcetera and I'm looking to get into WordPress cuz I don't really want to make a cms through laravel Paloma tutorials I found on making more precise of way to beginner and don't really explain a lot. What I don't understand is how the pages work. I'm using a basic bootstrap theme. However I am unaware how to just make a basic home page using HTML it looks like it's using posts and stuff. so my question is is there a tutorial online either video or written meant for people who have already done web development and want to move over to wordpress.3

I’m not a web programmer; I’m an application and SQL developer. So when I’m tasked with scrapping a web site for an ETL feed, I thought it would just be a ton of substring and Post/Get calls.
Nope! There is this garbage called JBOSS.A4J where the page isn’t a page but a bunch of files that are merged together and then it isn’t “real” but like a bunch of Photoshop layers that “look” like a page. JavaScript functions based on key press and things like Select/Option that looks like an element but Selenium/PhantomJS (C#) can’t find it. Or my Google-Fu isn’t working. -
This is not a happy rant...
Got a new well paying job. Moving up in life. But my wife is not in the same place... She had quite a few career struggles and just lost her current job... It wasn't even a job she went to school for, just whatever she could find...
Now she's getting quite depressed. Luckily she's not envious at me, but does keep saying how lucky she is to have me.
I really want to help her somehow, but this is really a thing I just don't know how... And it just looks like she's not handling it too well. Joking about suicide and crying about being useless... She also keeps saying that all she can do now is be a housewife. We did seek out help for her. But still... I really want to give her better support. I feel useless here.18 -
Just found out that android looks for new SSIDs even when wifi is off...
Why does it do that?
Isn't that a waste of battery?
Well since I use the SSIDs of my company to save the time of entry and leaving I don't need to have wifi on now, but still... Why?2 -
Just finished making an ER diagram for the 5th time now.
It was less painful this time. (Thanks draw.io)
(About the 4th ER diagram - le professor says "It looks like a flow chart, that's not right", but it's clearly not?)
I'll have to submit the draft tomorrow to the professor, I just hope that he green lights it so I could finalize the project report.
I hate making ER diagrams now. -
So I got the LSTM working in keras.
Working from a glorified tutorial.
Why the fuck do people let their github pages go down with no other backup?
Especially if its a link in your blog?
Why would you do that and not post the full script (instead of bits and pieces interspersed with *partial* explanations)?
In any case, its working and training on a test set and examples just to debug my own understanding of the process.
Once thats done I can generate some training data and try training on a small set. If that goes smoothly and the loss looks like it is heading in the right direction, then I'll setup the hardware for the private cloud and start writing the parallel computing component.2 -
I have co workers who laugh at me everytime I discuss to them how we should create clean code. (create functions for repeating code, naming conventions, generic code).
They would brag instead how they make another javascript ui library/plugin work(we are web developers by the way). Looks good in the front end but a mess in the backend.
I already created generic classes, generic database views that can be used by them if they want. But they create a new one with the same functionality.
I am a bit of a shy guy, and they are bit of loud, and I don't want to look like a know-it-all-guy, so I just let them do what they want.
I am just concerned how we can work easier by easily reading each others code.5 -
The longer I work in my department, the more I grow to appreciate clients that actually know what they are doing. Or clients who have been communicating with us for so long that the emails got a little less strict and formal.
Having a client write something like "I know this mail looks scary long, but trust me, its just a few domain edits, nothing horrible" (freely-translated from my native language) just kinda... Sets me at ease and makes me chuckle.1 -
I'm working on a report, i have been working on it for three months with incremental feedback meeting sessions. 'It looks great'! 'What we wanted', with detailed notes at each session. So confirmed as complete last fortnight. Today - email out of the blue - we need these major things fixed, why is it doing that, the report has to go to the printers tomorrow! Argh! It is doing that because that's how you asked it to be! And if it was so important, why are you only just looking at it now?3

What IDE to use on Ubuntu?
Hey guys, just recently started getting into Ubuntu & Linux, and I need some recommendations for a good IDE (or just an editor). I want to program C, C++ as main priorities, but want an IDE that isn't locked to only one language :) Been looking at Sublime Text, and while it looks cool and easy to use, I'd prefer something that didn't require a license..
Hope you guys can help out, any help is appreciated :)20 -
I fucking love my SD card reader driver fucking up my whole system. How did that driver even pass BayHub's fucking QA, causing a bluescreen of death right during reboot of Windows? Anyways thanks Microsoft for that nice new bluescreen not telling me anything about the fucking problem why Windows just crashed. But at least it looks nice, so that it's more fun working all night and half a day to find the fucking problem myself. Fuck this.1

Recruiter: I just had a look through your skillset and experience and wow - I am impressed. Looks like you have worked with quite a few different languages and those 2 FAANG companies really stand out when looking through your CV. So let me tell you something.. rather than me going through the roles I had in mind for you, why don't you tell me what would be the next big thing for you?
Me: Well I've been looking into Blockchain for a few years now; specifically Solidity and Rust with web3 now. It'd be great to at least have some exposure to any of these.
Recruiter: Ah yes, these are definitely the next big things, however the roles I have here right now for Solidity, Rust or web3, require around 3 years of commercial experience. I have a lead Rust engineer role, however they need someone who has worked on NFT based projects extensively.
Me: Sounds like you have made a decision to send me to another Nodejs/React role, so what's with the big talk then?5 -

Well, it's time for a personal thing today, because I was hit with some shit today that I'm still kinda shook about.
So, as a bit of introduction (I've mentioned these in previous posts before but whatever, not everybody sees everything): I'm currently a senior in high school and I'm in the school's band (neither are too related, but a bit of setup for this story). I've been talking to a girl lately and I think I like her. She's fun to be around, kinda silly, and just great overall. She makes me happy and I like it. Her name is Grace, her sister's name is Taylor (just to avoid confusion later)
In the school's band, we play at home football and basketball games. Today was a basketball game. Normally when there's a game I just stay after school because I don't want to go home and come back a couple hours later, plus I like to hang out with some of the other people who do the same thing.
Grace was staying after for the game too. I was talking to her in the band room, kinda flirting a bit (on an unrelated side note, she's ticklish). Someone comes in the band room because he wanted to practice a bit, to get ready for the game. She's going back and forth between the band room and somewhere else (not too sure where she was). At one point I left to get a drink, come back, she's sitting next to him, just talking. I join the conversation, and her sister (Taylor) comes in, to get ready herself.
I go over to talk to Taylor for a minute. She looks at Grace and the other guy, then looks at me and just says "separate them". To which I said "...what? why? how?"
Me and her go outside the band room and she tells me that basically the guy has been cheating on his girlfriend with Grace, and it's just hurting everyone involved, except him basically. His girlfriend doesn't seem to fucking care, and he's done it before with someone else. (The other person actually like vaguely mentioned it to me a long time ago, but I didn't really know what she was talking about until now)
So basically, dude's cheating on his girlfriend with Grace. And I like Grace. Honestly don't know what the fuck to do. I want to do something because whenever something's going on with Grace, her sister always trusts me to make sure shit goes right. Some times when Grace wouldn't eat, her sister would always talk to me and ask me to make sure she actually eats.
Fuck guys. This stuff has been on my mind for the past ~4 hours and I don't know what to do, or if I even can do anything about it. I just needed to get this shit off my chest.
Sorry for the long personal story. Some parts I didn't really articulate very well. Honestly it was more of me just getting everything into words.4 -
Is there any free software or website one can use where it takes a screenshot or page and you can mark areas on it, then add comments to those areas? (kind of like powerpoint comments, but without the awkward canvas limitation)
Then later the viewer sees instead of huge message bubbles, only those marked areas on top of the screenshot and when he hovers them - sees the comment pop up somewhere.
I remember QA having something like that, but don't remember anything about it. (I think it had a palmtree logo?..)
It would be amazingly useful for clients to just go through screenshots and marking on it "that looks nasty, put ajit pai on it".8 -
Career fair update:
At the fair I bee-lined right to a company I'd talked to at a hackathon before. The person I talked to there was extremely enthusiastic, and called me a "really strong candidate," and even talked about providing housing for the summer near the workplace!
I'm contrast, AMD's interviewer looked extremely uninterested. Pretty sure they just grabbed some random engineer who didn't want to be there.
Microsoft had a line so long that the fair ended before most of the people even got to talk to Microsoft. Needless to say, I didn't even bother.
Qualcomm seemed cool, that went alright.
Overall, really happy with how the fair turned out, and really excited with how likely this job looks for me.1 -
When you're asked about your salary expectations and answer with "45k a year" and the head of engineering that's interviewing you looks like you just asked for more money than he's currently earning, then you're probably applying at a startup.2

I've been fighting with my xmlrant.com hosting provider for a good several days now regarding enabling web deploy for my account.
According to their screenshot it all works, according to my various attempts still getting either 404 or 401 with the same login / server details!
So frustrating... It almost looks as though same authentication works differently for them locally and for me externally... Maybe domain name needs to be in FQDN format... Or smth else... Either way this will probably end up with them saying fuck off, all is working on our end.
And as well it might - it just might be my incompetence... *self-doubt creeping in*
But it's still frustrating nevertheless.
So far I need to settle for unreliable FTP deploy, which introduces big overhead as always copies entire deployment folder, even is only a few files are actually changed.
*Le sigh* -
So we develop several apps for Android.
And since the whole company is full of .Net developers we´re using Xamarin.
That piece of software alone is worth more than one rant.
But today someone called and said he updated to the latest version he got from our server.
But now one of the menu points in the settings menu is opening the wrong mask.
I´m like ... what? Who fucked that one up now. Ok...
I look at the code and, I didn´t expect it to be honest, but it looks alright.
The menu point has the correct id. The function "OnOptionsItemSelected" looks for the correct id and opens the correct activity.
Just to be sure I also check the activity.
Everything good.
So I start up an emulator. Deploy the app in debug. Works correctly.
Create a self signed apk and install it on the emulator. Works.
Repeat the same with a tablet and my personal phone. It works.
Then I install the apk from the server and would you look at that.
It opens the wrong mask.
So it seems only if the app is compiled on the release server it shows that strange behaviour.
And for the love of my 1080ti I can´t figure out what causes it...
Thank you Xamarin! -
Todays "WTF Bitbucket?"
You can mark a PR with "Requesting changes" even if it was already merged but you haven't refreshed your page.
The whole PR page is loaded with a dozen independent requests but you cannot reload a single "widget" (e.g. Activity) without refreshing the page.
And then you do an API request "mark PR with request for changes" and the server accepts that, even if the PR is merged. Why? Nobody looks at a merged PR with Requested changes. You would expect a warning "cannot mark request changes, PR already merged" but no, Atlassian fucked up here again.
The new "PR experience" is shit. Just loading everything in a separate request does help nothing if I still have to reload the page to get an updated PR view.4 -
So I am a Ruby guy since I don't now when. Probably forever. Lately I have to code Groovy. People are telling me all the time that Groovy is like Ruby. Let me tell you: No! Groovy is not like Ruby. Groovy is shitty Java with a slightly more usable syntax. Nothing more. It is so so tedious to code and reminds me why I stopped coding Java like 8 years ago. The fact that some features resemble Ruby syntax makes it even harder for me because I cannot code and facepalm at the same time. And I automatically type Ruby code all the time because it looks so similar in some places. I don't have that problem with other languages. Just Groovy. And the fact that Java people like it tells me how bad Java really is. It's just dirty. Guys, I feel so dirty now. And showering this morning didn't help. Had to get that off my chest. Thanks for "listening"9

Okay. So finally I moved into a new pc. Because I never worked in a company, I have absolutely no idea what is the proper standard workflow of developing a website. My work flow was the same in past 12 years, how I have learned in the school: Used xampp, developed everything, used git only locally, when stuff was ready I fired up Filezilla and uploaded everything, and used ssh to make the final adjustments. When I have made some changes, I just uploaded the files I have touched, in the same way, optimized if it was necessary, done. I wonder if someone can clarify me how a proper workflow looks like for php/laravel, mysql, nothing fancy. Is using xampp still okay? Or what is the industry standard procedure?2

I wanted to take small loan from bank I am loyal customer for 15 years to speed up things by month. I decided to pay money for it.
They have some online form for it and I filled it.
So what happened next ?
I got call to confirm every input I filled (heard keyboard typing every time I answered question).
I asked how long I will wait and got response that it will take couple of hours, max 2 days.
Just received another call 10 days later that they need documents to prove my income.
They got 15 years history of every operation and it looks like it means nothing.
I said to person I will earn this money faster then I get it from them so at this point this conversation is just waste of my time.
It’s 10 days left till end of month and I think it will be easier to just wait or ask friend for a favor.
Yet another reason to say fuck banks.
Time is money.7 -
a perfect app name taken by some shitty LQ indian who made a shitty LQ app that doesnt even look good and is broken
i feel like punching that shitty app
and shoving it up his ass
for taking the perfect name of my app that actually looks good and gets the job done
the kid even made about 6-7 accounts on ig about the same app but just putting dashes or underscores as the username THE FUCK?
the site looks so SO goddamn shitty, a lime green color as the background and a white text on that U CANT SEE SHIT THERE
NO PADDING, 3 ITEMS IN NAVIGATION MENU, 1 CHAT MESSAGE EXAMPLE
RUINED THE PERFECT SHIT FOR ME
FUCK U
i feel like going to deepweb and renting a hacker to take down his shitty instagram pages and the domain name, srsly whats the worst thing that can happen?? -
Funny thing I like to do sometimes that I learned from the movie called Office Space:
Peter Gibbons: Yeah, I just stare at my desk, but it looks like I'm working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch too, I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work. -
So many 'my Precious' devrant stickers, but nowhere to put them.
Waiting for new laptop in three months, trade out phone every year so don't want to waist them there.
Friend: you can give one to me.
HISSSSSSSSSS!
Friend: woah, dude?
Yeah, they do look sad just sitting in the envelope they came in. Here you go.
Friend: Thanks. I don't know, still looks sad on my laptop.
Well, that's cause your laptop's shit init.1 -
So I just spent all morning struggling setting up a project and getting it to run. My colleague sent me a screenshot of the documentation wiki, but didn't give the link.
*4 hours later looks at email for the Nth time*
Wait he did... that's not a wiki, that's Readme.md... this is in the repo link right above it!
I didn't need to checkout the repo so didn't open it... -
Looks like vector drawing applications stopped at bezier curves and don’t want to progress much.
I made a inkscape vector image and I used svg patterns to draw some background, then inkscape stopped responding when I’m trying to open that file on mac.
I tried bunch of other vector drawing apps hoping that at least one know what svg vector patterns are, looks like vector drawing applications use bitmaps for patterns and own formats instead of following svg specification.
I even wanted to pay for illustrator 30$ per month but it can’t do it. It opened my svg file claiming there’s no background there just empty space.
When I open svg image from browser it renders correctly but editing with gui is impossible cause all of those great softwares like illustrator, vectronator, sketch, affinity designer can’t handle vector patterns.
I ended up installing inkscape on old laptop that’s running ubuntu desktop.
Inkscape can do everything I want but I still need to delete not used pattens by editing xml.
At least it handles svg better than others.
Seriously vector image drawing apps suck.10 -
Making a simple 2d game in unity for a friend:
Never used unity or C#, but this looks easy. Gravity is already there, background is drag and drop, etc. That shit is fucking easy.
I think the hardest thing is going to be the textures, and inkscape got my back on that!
Anyway, I really need to sleep but I’m just reading the tutorial!
LET ME SLEEP FUCKING DEV BRAIN!2 -
I'm so tired of fs issues with webpack/react. fucking useless piece of shit. I look online and it looks like it's a pain in the ass for anyone actually using a modern stack. Literally just trying to use mailjet's API to send emails from a React app and I've been solving dependency issues for fucking hours because of the MANY node modules it requires. requires fs, dns, tls, and dgram for a FUCKING post request because mailjet makes you use their node package.1

I should've tried Mint sooner the first distro that has just worked out of the box for me.
Easy to install deb packages the ui looks good built in dark theme. If it runs as well on my desktop as it is on my laptop I think I'll have a distro for life.1 -
Google should really add support for Linux on Chromebooks. I don't see a reason to pay £1k for a Pixel Book just for build quality and great looks. However, having native Linux support and being able to use something more useful than ChromeOS would be hugely attractive and I would consider buying it.4

$this->newTab->devRant->postRant();
When you use CMD+Space on your Mac to open an application, and it looks it up on Wikipedia instead.
Literally just did this. I went to open Synergy(While typing a different post on dev rant) and instead it opened the wiki link for "Synergy"2 -
Just got done watching a 2 1/2 hours of Uncle Bob on programming. I really like his style of speaking. Great data and interesting viewpoints. Really easy to follow. I'd read some of his articles, but never listened to him before. Will definitely be watching more. For those of you in organizations using "agile" development and having a tough time of it, his talk called The Land that Scrum Forgot was really interesting.
And he really looks amazingly like my uncle, Tom, who's also been a programmer for decades! So I just think of him as Uncle Tom instead.1 -
Was watching the Google live event. Must confess that I'm highly disappointed with the looks of the Pixel 2 . I guess 2017 is just not the year for Google! I mean I love the software improvements but let's admit it that inspite of us being software devs , we ourselves love good design! The pixel 2 just does not make the cut according to me. It looks like a brick. Google does need some hardware devs!10

I'm about to spend 1.5 grand for a digital piano hoping I will finally start learning to play. It just looks so nice5

Working in an expanding business is mostly fun, can be kind of challenging (for those who don't like to step in and do what's needed). One thing in particular you need to do a lot - is interviews. Lot's of them.
There are alsways two sides of the coin, for sure. But, just a little tip/hint to everyone looking for a job - please, please, please make sure your CV and letter at least makes sense for the position you're trying to get.
This (screenshot) is just one example of things in a CV which really makes me want to shout and kick people out.
It's part of the front page of a CV, for someone who is looking for a position as front-end developer / UX specialist. This person claims to be very interested in UX, and has done wome work already in this field.
Can ANYONE explain to med WHAT THE F*CK this actually means?
1) How many stars can a row have? 10, 6, 8?
2) What does it mean to have 4 starss in PHP knowledge? What's lacking to get 5?
3) What's the scale based on, at all?
And you want me to hire to to do UX of loyalty communication (e-mail, mobile apps, websites/landing pages) for our customers - who in turn have millions of customers/prospects?!?
ARE YOU F*CKING KIDDING ME?
If you can't even make a visualization of your _own_ knowledge which can be interpreted into some sort of competence matrix, but you just use something you think looks cool... Damn, you could at least have tried.1 -
Spent 2 days installing different versions of nvidia-driver, nvidia-cuda-toolkit, cudnn.
Disassembled pc due to some ram memory problems and pc not starting after freeze.
Looks like sometimes plug out and plug in various components on your motherboard fix pc lol. Destroyed PC casing that collapsed due to me sitting on it.
All of this to just find out tensorflow error and all crashes are from graphics card overheating after keeping it for some time at 82 celsius.
Added time.sleep to python code and looks like it's working, keeping temperature below 65 celsius.
Still ~100 times faster than cpu training so I can live with that.3 -
Ahh... So Black Friday looks like it's gonna be black for me.
Sale started today but turns out they misprinted the prices and I guess after some more in depth thinking plus the amount of tax id have to pay... Doesn't feel worth it.
Will just wait till my current laptop craps out. Probably can squeeze out a few more years.6 -
I spent eight years in college doing very little progress and didn't graduate in the end ("studied" CS). I'm pretty sure I have severe ADHD and can't even afford to try and treat it/medicate it.
Anyway, I understand the eight-years-in-college-without-graduating matter looks very bad on a resume, but it's a good college (one of the top in my country) that gave me invaluable knowledge in what little I managed to accomplish there.
The way in which LinkedIn allows me to put college education only allows me to input (and in fact in most websites it's kinda required) start and end years, but to be truthful I gotta set these years with their huge span and some kind of observation that I didn't graduate...
This really gives me huge anxiety, and discourages me from even applying to jobs at all, feels like I've ruined my chances at getting into the industry, feels like it locks me away from opportunities, and I know how bad it looks for the HR people, who probably just reject me outright because on top of everything I'm not even the kind of person to particularly attract positive attention from the "normies" as they say.
So, should I just not put my incomplete/dragged out "education" on LinkedIn? I'm not sure if *some* CS education with extremely poor academic results is better than showing no history of higher education at all.1 -
I've been working in web development and design since 2012 and, while I've worked with others in my field along the way, I've not forged any lasting friendships... maybe I'm just a shitty person? I've burned some bridges that's for sure. Anyway, it all boils down to: I have no one to bitch to when I want to stab someone in the abdomen over frustrations at my current job.
Enter devRant...
I'm coming up on the year anniversary at my new position and there is still a lot to take in. I replaced a "web guy" who had been doing it for 20 years. Anyway, his stuff is all a mess, and what's worse is that the problems I'm seeing stretch far beyond my own responsibilities. I'm in a group of "tech" people who have all been here for a decade or more, and they're almost all like the guy I replaced: set in their ways and years out of date.
There is one gentlemen who is managing a database application and each site links to his ASP (not .NET) pages. Each of these pages looks like the website they were linked from. He showed me how he achieves this and it's just insane - he uses a bunch of files (basically just text files) that make up different pieces of the page to recreate the look/feel of the website on this his server - just to serve the information from the database. God forbid the website changes 'cause then all his little files need to change.
When I suggested that I can just query the database myself and display all that information on the actual site instead of doing all these redundant steps, I get "I think we should stick with the way we've been doing it for now."

"Hey, just scheduling in some time for a catch-up today, looks like you've just got focus time so I've scheduled it then"
"Wait, why did you decline my invite?!"
Because I actually need time to focus and do my job, and spending an hour talking to your sorry arse about something irrelevant doesn't trump time I need to focus? Bleh. People. -
I don't really remember... That can mean one of two things... It was to long ago... Or don't know how to do it yet... I do remember my first programming class, when my teacher said, "you just need to do a printf ..." And I asked, "what is that?" He looks at me, eyes wide open, for a huge amount of time, and then left without answering...
a side note, it was university class.1 -
One time, someone in my class asked for my help and sent me a file.
Pretty normal stuff, right? Well. I go to open the file. File open. It looks like a big jumble of random stuff. I looked through it, trying to figure put what it was supposed to do. No luck. So I ask him what it does. I decided while I wait I might as well try and run it to see what kind of error it gives.
It opens. And it's literally just a window that says "anime is trash".

So, for my final year project I'm tasked with creating a mobile app for iOS and Android.
A YouTuber I watch avidly decides to go with Xamarin for his next app. Cool, I think: I'll go with Xamarin for my app too (I'd like to test run the app on PCs just for fun).
Looks for Xamarin tutorials, nice, found one! Goes into VS, creates a new project. I add "Hello World" to the centre of the screen.
*F5* Build started... 5 minutes later I come back and it failed. No reason why it failed, all parentheses closed, semicolon at the end of my only line of code.
Watches YouTuber's new video, he has the same problem ( ´ ▽ ` )ノ. He adds a button, builds, build fails. Tries a second time, build succeeds. And this goes on for a couple of minutes while he's troubleshooting the problem.
Oh well. Time for hell I guess.14 -
Was doing some chill programing when all of a sudden we lose power in the entire fucking house! So not just a blown fuse or something, but looks like the entire street has it, so no telling when it'll be back on either -_- Also I reaaaallly need to buy a UPS for my server, this is happening way too fucking often.5

been exploring the options for cross platform desktop app, and i found :
java : both awt and swing look ugly, i really like OOP of java, and the way projects are organized is easy to scale, but i need to deploy the jdk, and the speed on gui apps isn't that great
C# : (.net/ mono, i can't grasp F# and vb is stupid) looks native on windows, not so much alien on both linux/mac, and being a java cousin is a pro, i found the Eto library for mono even looks more native on *ix than winforms
wxwidgets: for C/C++ so far this looks like the best option for total native feel and performance, but man i fucking hate C code, and this looks a lot like C code, even with proper native Cpp support, maybe i should dive deeper in it
GTK+ : did any one mention C code ? because this mother fucker is plain C with macros all over the place, it made me realize why wx is promoted as Cpp friendly, i doubt I'll use this
tcl/tk : even tho ive never wrote a single line of tcl in my life, the tk lib is the default ui for both python and ruby on all supported platforms,
and i really love ruby, and Python is Usually a joy to work with
Qt : this by far looks like the best option, proper OOP in C++, bindings for python (ruby binds are outdated), almost native look and feel on supported platforms, and even has a gui builder in xml or json/js (qml) however i bet I'll use such a thing, the building tho depends on an external preprocessor "moc" and some wicked macros, also makes working with templates a fucking mess, and the heavy dependence on QObject inheritance makes integrating external libraries a bit more tiring, the signal slot system makes more sense in python than in C++, since it makes me confused about the flow of the code
lazarus: is a freepascal implementation that looks and feels like delphi, not so much for native look and feel, but good performance and easy language to handle
electron : this fat mofo is fat, it's the slowest of all options, if i want an html app, I'll just compile a stripped down webkit and deploy that
what do you think ? and did i miss something ?17 -
Supposedly 2 years professional experiencd junior - console.log ("how do you like figure out what data is being passed In and what it looks like? is there some special tool you use when you are trying to get the types or correct nomenclature for the reference?") Was trying live image of nitrux os during our class break today, chilling out, eating lunch with friends. Out of nowhere THIS fkin retard comes in, looks at screen and shouts in front of d class "yo linux is trash never use linux i used zorin for a week worst fkin experience of my life" and goes away before i cud respond.
My friend signalled me to keep calm as my anger was apparent. Mf I wanted to fkin slam my laptop on dis fucker's sly face and gut d kid. Friend slowly instructs "in time, brethren, in time"
He just asked me for a windows activator. Thinking of sending a bitcoin miner virus.4 -
Why redis, why?! You run "redis-cli -h <host>" and it looks like either it cannot connect to <host> or the redis-cli is frozen.
What was the fix? Adding "--tls" to the call. Why can't you just say "You are starting a non-tls connection to a remote but the remote wants to talk TLS"? Or give any other indication that you did reach the server but did not understand what it said and hint for TLS? I was hunting non-existent connectivity issues for hours just because there wasn't a good error message...3 -
Service worker.
I've been given the task to write a website for our school, where teachers would post plans, images, polls... I decided to use this new technology called service worker. Been struggling a lot with just, but hey it looks like an app and works offline.
It's really something anyone can add to any website in a week, but the advantages are quite a lot2 -
Wasting 7 sheets of paper because of this fucking HP Officejet(6600). ALL I ASKED WAS TO PRINT THAT FREAKING 14 PAGE LONG DOCUMENT AND YOU WITH YOUR FUCKING OWN MIND LET ME UNSTUCK YOU 7 TIMES!!!
Me: Sends the document to the printer.
Printer: Let's do like I am going to print.
Printer: let's show the "document stuck" message
me: Let's open the back and remove the paper.
Printer: let's show the "document stuck" message
Me: Just pressed OK and it continues
WTF YOU AREN'T EVEN STUCK YOU FUCKING STUPID PRINTER.
Looks like every time I send a file to the printer at least the 1st sheet will troll me with that message.
Printer is asking for some free base jumping from the window lessons.1 -
One thing I realized about my workplace: when you're given a new template to be used for an existing website project, do NOT use the included CSS files. Seems like it would be better to just manually change the looks of the website to make it similar to that template, lest you want some alignment stuff to break.
Plus, it seems that I don't even need to meet all the design requirements, because whenever I try to do that, clients tend to forget the design they originally gave and request for all these changes.
One more month... One more month and I'm off to bootcamp to properly learn.1 -
Talent Acquisition for a company I previously turned down reached out to me again. Bragging about their business acquisitions and head count increase. Lol that means nothing to me unless you significantly improved your pretty shitty PTO policy, which is why I turned them down in the first place and explicitly told them that was the reason.
I guess they think I’m desperate because I haven’t updated my LinkedIn, so it looks like I’ve been unemployed for a year. Nope, not unemployed. Just don’t want my enemies to find me at new job.
I ranted about that place here: https://devrant.com/rants/4832237/...2 -
So I tried to fix an app today that we made for a client ...
It's a Cordova project that's basically jus a wrapper for a certain section of the client's website that's displayed inside an iframe inside said app (with a bit of additional CSS and such). It's all working fine.
Said section of the website offers two to four different options to choose from, then scrolls down (triggered by JavaScript, window.scrollTop or JQuery's equivalent) to the next selection panel that's dynamically added to the DOM tree, the content's depending on what the user selected before.
The problem is, said scrolling effect inside said iframe does not work inside the iOS version of the app (does, however, when the content of the iframe is viewed (by just visiting the URL) inside Safari), instead, the iframe just scrolls back to top.
So after five and a half hours of depression, anger and rage, also some repetetive cursing towards Apple (just like every time something has to do with their awful products), my boss walks in, looks at me and says:
"I'd be fine with it, if I just had to manually scroll instead".
.........
If it wasn't 5pm already (I usually go home at 6), I would've just left the room / gone home or gotten my salad from the fridge to have something to release my anger on.
Seriously though, what the fuck!? -
Any tips to stop getting pissed at your designer's design?
I was given a frontend task after so long (I'm a backend developer who has frontend experience) and the design is very good except architecture wise it's very difficult to build. It's not impossible, but it's very tricky to implement.
Our client has already approved the design, so I guess there's nothing I can do about it
But I am getting constantly annoyed when implementing the design. Whenever I look at the design, I feel like swearing all the time. I feel the designer is very inconsiderate. The design looks very good at big desktop screen, but some part looks dumb in responsive or tablet.
Does anyone ever feel the same? And maybe have tips for me to get by?
My managers have started telling me to stop saying "it's difficult" or "it's too hard". But it is difficult! And I am getting more annoyed when they tell me that.
Whenever I tell the designer that certain part is not gonna work (because we try to make things general so we can reuse), he will argue and somehow ended up saying "come on, just think how prideful you will be after implementing this".3 -
How would you call this role? Product Owner? Graphics Designer?, Both? Neither?
I work for a small startup besides university and we do need a person responsible for how site looks. But then again we also need a product owner for the frontend. So why not combine these roles? A person who's responsable as product owner for all the frontend related bits plus does the designing. Initially this person would work with just one frontend dev, possibly more over time.
Question:
- How would you call this role/job?
- What would be an appropriate salary?
- How would you evaluate an application to this role?3 -
There are two kinds of people in the world:
Type A: This has good built quality, is pretty upgradable, has reasonable specs and enough ports and doesn't break my bank. This is the right choice.
Type B: I might have to live on canned food for a while but this is the machine for professionals and I'm in the path of being a professional. Also, it just looks so good. It just feels right to buy this.3 -
The age-old question between `DD/MM/YYYY` or `MM/DD/YYYY`.
After some shower thoughts, my new preference is `YYYY/MM/DD` for Americans and Lithuanians (only 2 that I know) it just looks like the year has been placed first, otherwise, they read it as normal. To everyone else, the date is reversed and therefore will be read in reverse leading to the same answer.
In addition, `YYYY/MM/DD/some-dated-file` as a file path works exceptionally well for storing files as it uses the least amount of repetition.12 -
It looks like there aren't many great matches for your search.
Just give up and ask an AI bot to imagine some nonexisting bullshit instead.
Don't insist that there must be documents matching your search. Just accept that the age of quality is over and people must accept low-quality content as the new "information" standard.
Welcome to the age of alternative facts -
Coworker: "Hey, so I discovered this library that automatically brings up and tears down local containers to perform unit tests on data sources"
Me: "Sounds neat"
Coworker: "Yeah, I've been messing with it locally, and it means we don't need to have the data sources installed on our machines or rely on the ones in the testing environment."
Me: "That's good"
Coworker: "Just a shame I had to roll back our testing framework to a previous version and refactor the code in all our other tests as a result."
Me: "Wait what? *looks at documentation* It says they support the newer framework"
Coworker: "Yeah, but I couldn't get it to work. So I'm just gonna make a PR for it, okay?" *Proceeds to make a PR, approve and merge the code before I can comment further on the changes*
Welp, there goes all my motivation to get anything done for the rest of the day.3 -
Unpopular opinion:
No one should ever argue over ANY coding style unless they're just starting out and thus have to come up with their organization's coding standards for the first time.
Once the standards are set, everyone should just comply with it irrespective of their personal preference. Or alternatively, include back-and-forth code formatting into the development workflow.
The only thing that's important is that by the time code is pushed into the codebase, it is formatted according to the defined standards so that the whole thing looks consistently written, which is basically the point of setting a coding standard.2 -
Let me tell you about my wonderful weekend. It all started with a game that doesn't run in wine and it ended up in the biggest nightmare of Windows Update and EFI configuration.
1 - let's boot on my Windows partition to play trackmania 2.
2 - Windows Update interrupts me while driving a track.
3 - Update keep failing over and over again.
4 - I keep trying things to fix Windows Update, but with no success.
5 - Let's try system restore, failed
6 - Let's try to do a reset. "You don't have a recovery drive". Oh, right...
7 - Let's try to upgrade Windows 10 to Windows 10, just because. Nope, "we could not determine if your pc can run Windows 10". Wait what....
8 - I guess I'll be reinstalling this trash. "Nope, can't. Don't like that partition I just formatted". Of course you can't...
9 - Had to delete the partition and let it create new ones. It created a new EFI partition. Just why???
10 - Okay that worked. Let's fix grub now.
11 - Maybe not, let's try rEFInd, because it looks fancy.
12 - After rebooting on the live USB for about 50 times and reconfiguring rEFInd without any luck, I realised the install script didn't install fs drivers for ext4. Oh, right... That's why you didn't find any Linux kernel...
13 - It can't boot windows, they're using a different EFI partition. Let's move rEFInd to the new EFI partition windows created for me.
14 - Finally everything works again. So much effort to play a freaking game without being bothered by windows update. And rEFInd abience theme looks beautiful.
I've got to say though, I learned a lot and the Arch wiki is awesome!6 -
(I know this rant won't gather much attention, maybe there are just a bunch of people that know Redux and still less that used it in Angular).
I feel so bad, really, I just want to throw everything against the wall. I really hate ngrx, I hate redux and how it's de facto implemented in Angular. I talked with other developers and everyone around says that redux is hated only by people that don't understand it, and well, maybe it's stupid, but I hate it.
It's so different from Angular plain programming, why the hell I need to create a index.ts file? It looks so wrong.
Why the hell import * as reducer, why don't you just import the reducer?
Why do you need a switch statement? Really? We're in 2018, languages as python removed it, in the era of reactive programming why don't you just map a key to a function?
Why so many files? Why for a 20 rows module I've to write 5 files each of them twice longer?
Why so much boilerplate? The time spent at implementing everything will be ever gained back?
Why does everything looks so wrong?3 -
Another guy and I are each making a CMS to see who can be done first and who's looks/acts the best. He's basically done and I still have a lot to do, but I've been looking over his code and, it. is. bad. The classes are badly made and named with all lowercase. And i found this thing, he has 10 other functions just like this one.
His: https://ide.explosivenight.us/works... (I made sure sql injection isn't possible for normal users)

help with the ui for my app?
it pretty much just gives you a word a day. they frontend is functionally complete, but it looks pretty ugly. any ui ideas? (the backend isn't complete so only test data is being returned by the server)
it's android only right now, because i cannot afford to compile it on ios
i'll put the download link in the comments8 -
I do IT support for a Uni.
A ticket comes in about how the site looks weird after an update.
Spend 10 minutes looking through Chrome dev view (we don't have access to backend).
Give up and assign to web team.
... Why do the people who manage the site not know anything about web development? 99% chance it's a just a quick CSS fix. -
what do you think about the idea of... "pseudo-recursion"?
as in, language construct that looks basically like recursion except one detail that makes it translate into iterative execution where the "recursion" calls just add to the list of "execute in next layer" ...iterator-type variable(?)
also, if you understand what I mean and if it's not complete nonsense, any syntax suggestions that would seem most natural for you? (also for context tell me what language that syntax suggestion mostly draws from (and why))
just a bit of idle thought/idle talk, don't take it too seriously.5 -
Anyone ever?
Do that thing where you just obsess over how your code looks. Like "This fookin console app would look epic with boiler plates and some finesse.
Then next thing you know the thing you were trying to learn / do get waysided and you need to shoehorn it into the rest of your day / night?
In fairness I am just learning c# with the intention of following it up with unity for game development. So this might. Be a beginner thing.2 -
I think maybe I am doing something wrong.
I have this node.js application I am building with typescript and I wrote tests in mocha. Now I need to make some changes which break quite a few tests.
When I run mocha on the command line the errors whizz past. When I worked in java and .net (with junit and nunit) you could just click a test in the ide to run it. So you could 'fix' one test at a time. Also you could just double click on a fail and it would jump you to the code for that test or the exception that failed.
I found this extension for visual studio code that adds a sidebar to visual studio code. It looked good but now I spent the last hour trying to get it to run typescript tests - looks like it doesn't support the compilers argument.
Surely other developers must do this sort of stuff. I am not using an obscure technology stack right? Do you write automated tests for your codebase? What tools do you use? Should I switch ide? switch testing frameworks? -
My mom doesn't even know what I'm doing. She doesn't even asked much, cause she's from the old generation, and just accept the things as it is. My mom doesn't even send messages. She use phone just for calls.
My siblings didn't know that I am a dev, they never asked.
My other half? She always seeks my help on IT things. And I always explain to her bit by bit, and looks like she understand a bit or two. I just hope that she didn't bored. Oh yeah, we're not married yet. -
I'm a second year CS student from Spain, and I'm getting my first remote internship for 3 months with an US bussiness. It looks great and the project does as well. My mentor's experience is quite impressive. Anyway, I'm a bit concerned as long as it's a new bussiness and I don't know about the requirements to do this legally overseas/remote, and he hasn't been really clear about that (we're meeting tomorrow by Skype). I just want to be sure it's not a scam. Any advice? It will be apreciated so much.2

Got a change request today. The client had written two lines.
The first line(specs): we would another installation type something like "blabla"(an existing installation type).
The second line just ask for an time estimate...
They same client have been known to use mspaint as the visual aid of how they want things to look, and it looks ugly.
My reply for the CR: The time needed to complete the task is 5 hours + whatever amount of hours I find suitable. -
Building your e-commerce looks easy for a dev. Just build a webapp and cry over it not getting hits 🤷♂️.
-
Not completely a dev thing. But now days it seems like everyone is either an audiophile or a master at phone design. Like for REAL! What do you want???
This sounds like crap (has HD Sound)
This looks ugly (any and every phone)
It seems like there a lot of trolls that just go to events they really don't like... Why do Samsung Fans watch Apple events??
You dont see vegans going to every meet market they see.... Like for real..... -
We are supposed to make a portfolio in school explaining who we are and projects that we made. The only problem is that I have not done shit, the only thing that I've done that was only for the most part ripped from a tutorial (everything else might as well been copy pasted) was a calculator that barely works and looks like shit. So I just sat down for hours got nothing done and felt awful.
-
So this modeler on a Dev call, I have this new shiny model, let's release this to production mid November😳 (Seriously that's how he started out the first conversation).
2 min silence, everybody looks at each other for reaction, just like a TV shows !! 🤣🤣
And the my Manager lists out the things that would be required to before we ship this out.🤐
Modeler : Oh I guess we won't be able to deliver it this year.😤
I am like what were you thinking. Everything is not just import an Excel in R and crunch numbers and write reports and show graphs. is it?
There is a real development cycle that has to do all of the above on not so pretty data, at scale reliably for 100s of clients and not just your laptop. -
Hey, I wanna start developing Android apps. I'm good at java, I just need to learn how to use to make Android apps. So I looks for the books I need to read on Stack Overflow and some other sources. so now I have a bunch of different books that I don't know what book to read first. I just need someone who is experienced in mobile development to recommend for me what books or tutorials I need to go through first knowing that I already know java (for native apps) and html5 (for hyprid apps).
Thank you in advance.1 -
I just saw an ad for a "firefly" drone controlled with hand gestures and it looks really cool. I saw a video here about someone working on gesture controlled drones under an animal codename. Which one of you was it?5

(insight: for organisational and modularity purposes we tend to cut each object (which are usually chemical reactors or unitary a operations for plants ) into classes and subclasses and such, also to provide a common guided framework to insert a new objext to expand our simulation program).
Me: should we just use a middle parent class for these objects or leave them like this. Also I believe we could do X the Y way instead of X but requires updating the user guide. I could do that as well though. Up to you.
Professor: Yes *too bad it does not comply expected answers* Also mmh can you provide me a paper for tommorow morning to explain our project and why it should be better than what other universities do need to show some friends
Me: *looks at the watch, it's 9 pm, reflects upon the fact he has to get 2 hours of travel to even get home* well it's a bit hard for tomorrow morning, can you leave me 2 days?
I rise my head and realised my professor took his things and went home in that split second of me checking the time.2 -
This happened to me sometime back.
I want to try out a WordPress plugin in my local machine before installing on a production server. It is an Ubuntu machine. Downloaded and installed Xampp, then setup WordPress with MySQL. Now tried uploading the plugin zip file, it throws some permission error, asking to fix permissions or use FTP. I thought of just chmod 777 recursively for the WordPress directory to fix this easily.
Ran the command, looks like it is hung. Terminated using Ctrl+C and then ran the same command. Again it is taking much time. It should not take so much time to recursively change the permission of just a WordPress directory. Thought something was wrong. Before I realized the damage is already done.
Looks like I ran the command
sudo chmod -R 777 /
instead of
sudo chmod -R 777 ./
Fuck, I missed a dot in the command and it is changing permissions of everything in my machine. Saw the System monitor, CPU usage spiked to 100%. I can't close or open any program. Force shutdown the machine using the power key. It didn't boot again. Recovery mode didn't help. Looks like there is no easy way to restore back from this damage. Most of the files I need are backed up in the cloud, still, need a few more personal files so that I can format and reinstall Ubuntu. Realised I have Windows in dual booting. Boot into Windows and used some ext4 reader to recover the files, formatted and reinstalled the OS. Took a few hours to get back to my previous setup.
Lesson Learned: Don't use sudo unnecessarily.
Double check the command while executing.
Running a wrong command with root permission can fuckup your entire machine. -
If I kept track of all the hours wasted on issues due to overloads of functions called ToList() it would probably make up a sizable portion of the project budgets.
If I call ToList on a query object, it looks like I'm trying to serialize the query definition into some kind of array. That's what it *should* do with that name. Bonus if the object implements some generic enumerable interface, ToList makes it call your database, you can just toss the query into some json serializer that blocks while calling ToList for you, and people end up doing exactly this because the code turned out so much neater.
Because that's the thing. It's like people implement it because it's "neat" and the user shouldn't care about its internals. How many tears would be shed by just calling it ExecuteAsync? -
Have you ever use Ubuntu (or any Linux that use Pango to render text) for a significant amount of time that you notice that text in Mac OS is just not that crisp? To the point that it looks blurry, even more so in non-retina display.
I want to justify buying new Macbook for that sweet M1 silicon, but I don't think I can live with the blurry text. I rarely use built-in display on a laptop, but it is hard to find external monitor with Retina resolution (200+ dpi) with decent size, or ultrawide for that matter.5 -
That feeling when you inherit a script to automate something that takes 10 seconds. Why would they even write this? It's not like the task is hard....
...
And why would they write it this way? I'm sure if I just move this part and ....
That feeling when you spend several hours improving and redesigning a perfectly functional script to automate a 10 second task for zero gain aside from cleaner code. "But the code for this quick-and-dirty script I'm never going to look at again looks so much better now!"
... If only it did a bunch of complicated parsing, regex matching, and error checking just so I can answer one less prompt.... Unless that parsing fails. Then it should still ask me for that prompt... And also validate that the answers I give are valid and correct....
That feeling when you spend a whole nother day starting from scratch to implement error checking and complex parsing logic knowing full well the original task takes 10 seconds to do manually and is needed at most twice a day (for a grand total of 20s a day)
WHY AM I LIKE THIS?!?!?!4 -
Static Vision.
Exactly what you think it is. But maybe lighter than that.
Basically if I unfocus my eyes every so slightly, I can see what looks like really fast drizzling rain, except it looks like light, faintly though. Like I kind of have to look for it, but it's there. Sometimes really obvious, sometimes not.
It's as though being in front of a monitor too much fucked up my eyes, or something.
More pronounced if I've been awake coding for maybe more than a day...
Just me? or anyone else?
Kind of caused me problems a few times, thinking it was something else....
I really want to know if anyone else has experienced this.5 -
!rant (am I doing this right?)
I want to dive into Python, but I read that python 2 won't be maintained by 2020. Should I pickup Python 3 or work with Python 2?
Slight background notice: I am a developer right now. I swap between Java and Javascript for most of my job. I'm familiar with the fundamentals of programming and am just looking for a language to automate some tasks or just explore. Python looks lightweight and open to a lot of potential projects, like AI (which I guarantee will take a while for me to grasp).5 -

Just came across the NERSC Docs (https://docs.nersc.gov), absolutely wonderful open source docs by the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center.
I believe they were written as a guide for people that would be using their super computers, but it's a very good linux beginners guide.
Plus, it looks nice (no visible dark mode tho...). -
WSL seems really cool from what i've been toying with it. WSL2 seems like it'll be even better and the integration with docker(another thing i'm toying with) looks interesting. as far as i can find though it's only on windows insider for now, and I don't like having telemetry on my main machine.
So i spent a good chuck of my day just setting up Hyper-v, learning about nested virtualization (so docker will work), setting up a win10pro vm, and i'm now in the process of setting this up to be a virtualized dev machine (not gonna be a one use only system cause i spent way too long on this shit) and setting up docker and wsl
I don't know much about docker or WSL beyond just some random stuff i've learned to toy with to simplify some things i do. but maybe this will give me a cool way to actively learn more about them and maybe use them as more than just boredom toys3 -
after moving back to my home country, buying an apartment and after my career started to head to nowhere because there is nothing to code for me in work, just manager stuff, I am returning to coding after work to get back into shape, practice more, learn new stuff (and the old stuff)
wanted to create a small webapp with laravel/vue, holy fucking shit how hard it is (for me) to setup your env
install composer -> command php not found
o.O im pretty sure i had php on this machine HOW THE FUCK WOULD I HAVE ALL THESE PROJECTS HERE THEN
install php8.1 -> no such package
-.-
upgraded to ubuntu 22.04, install php8.1, composer
create new laravel project -> 3 errors, missing laravel/pint, phpunit
* visible confusion * i told you to create a project, if you need it, why didn't you... oh, wait
composer install -> same
well, * looks left, looks right * --ignore-platform-reqs
but still getting the chills from a new project, now I go sleep and tomorrow I start my journey to get back to business, wish me luck -
I enjoy working through problems with friends and coworkers, teaching and learning, and generally helping get work done. I feel a bit like I'm being used as a tool and not a resource though. At first I was helping someone with code here and there, but now it's every day like clockwork, and I'm basically doing their work for them. I'm trying to guide them by explaining my thought process, but it almost seems sometimes like they're just waiting for answers to type.
On the plus side I'm getting hella practice on multiple projects and it probably looks good to higher ups being so resourceful, but can a guy get either a break or a raise? Lol -
Trying to update and add to my skills. Let's try angular,. Visual Studio sucks for this. Hey look vs code, this looks great.... Install, add some recommended extensions... Cool. Add eslint, hey look at these errors awesome I'm getting somewhere. WTF dont use var use let.. Ok why... Hours later and one drink, okay that makes sense. Change code.....
Unexpected declaration wtf why. Switch to var... Dont use var..... Fuck me... Google, read, google, read...... Wtf why why why won't this fucking work... I just want to code something using best practices2 -
I'm wanting to basically make a program or collection or scripts to automate all the boring parts of my life (cause I'm a lazy shit basically)
Any idea on what would be the best language to do this. I'm thinking python tbh. The end goal is going to be bills being payed ( I will out money manually into a PayPal account or something for this) and shopping being ordered to my house. Like I said I'm thinking python but wondering if there is anything better. I'm gonna end up having a computer or something set up just for theses scripts as will then extend into home automation or whatever I think looks fun. As the best way to learn is to try and making something fun2 -
I love how my boss wants to use libraries for everything, even the most minor task needed he looks up for a library to do it, I think that sometimes he even spends more time looking for a library than the time he would spend writing the functionality
e.g. Roles for routes permissions, dude, you have the users role in session you can just write a middleware with ~15-20 lines of code to get them rid of the route come on -
So for awhile now I’ve been preparing myself for my first dev job as a .NET dev, and I’ve mostly just been polishing my C# knowledge with OOP, Entity Framework, ASP.NET and it’s been going really well.
So my self assigned time limit (end of August-beginning of September) is coming up and that’s when I’m gonna apply, so I decided today to take some time from programming to actually make my resume.
I did not use a template so it looks boring and I don’t have a lot to put on it but what I did put on it was important and I feel is solid (for not having worked before).
I’m having a few people I know look at it from a professional stand point and gave me feed back I implemented and it is better now.
I already linked my github, should I link my LinkedIn?
will people actually care if I don’t use a template to make it visually pop because I’d honestly rather keep it how it looks as is if I can.6 -
Job interviews finished! I just kept one at Rouen (embedded systems) , and now I'm waiting the answer for Nice (Cry Engine).
Gosh I want to live in Nice and be a game developer, that looks really fun. I mean I enjoyed the test x)
Let me hope a bit guys :p -
I just had a long argument with the scrum master about my roles as a developer, and apparently it looks like, that I am a tester and a project owner too. For just one payment. FML!

I've spent the whole day writing editing a proposal a partner sent as docx. I've tested out writing revisions and saved the file to be sure, and I could re-open it just fine. After some hours, I've sent the file to the partner and he said he couldn't open it. Looks like Libreoffice broke the document.xml file beyond repair when I edited my last comments. Will need to work until midnight because this piece of shit software is incapable of handling the basic document structure it is written for. IF YOU SUPPORT DOCX FILES HOW ABOUT YOUR RELEASE VERSIONS DONT LEAVE BROKEN CORRUPTED MESSES YOU PIECE OF SHIT. HOW MANY HOURS DO YOU THINK HAVE YOU COLLECTIVELY WASTED??1
-
All you emacs cultists, share with me your wisdom. As someone who wants to learn how to use it I have a few questions.
what resources should I use to learn more about it and configuring it?
What's the difference between emacs, doom emacs and all the others I've heard about?
Are you able to and do you use the GUI or the CLI versions of it?
And are there any packages equivalent to VSCode's Intellisense?
please for the love of God don't turn this into a holy war of vim vs emacs I don't mind either I just want to try out emacs cause I think it looks awesome and something I'd be interested in.1 -
When all the feedback you get from a damned class diagram was "Ok looks good :)"
Not sure if good because it doesn't look like a complicated cobweb anymore or because the relationships established were right - though I doubt you can say that just by looking for a mere 30 seconds at a class diagram with more than 20 classes. -
Ugh, have an assignment due and just spend the last 2 hours looking for a bug that caused blocking code in one of socket threads.
Looks like it's going to be a long night -
looking for suggestions for a self hosted CMS. I tried Ghost, and it looks real nice, but there's no option to have just 1 section be private, you can only make the whole thing private. I tried Drupal but honestly it's just way too complicated for what I need, and doesn't look very aesthetically pleasing.
basically, here's the features I'm looking for:
- ability to set privacy/access control on a per-page or per-section basis
- Markdown for content editing
- ability to use regular HTML when needed
- ability to upload content via an API (so that I can publish documentation via my gitlab CI)4 -
I know there is this huge argument about whether to use tabs or 4 spaces and while I'm on neither side, just sitting there using tabs, in this new project I'm FORCED to use a 1 space indentation and no line breaks in Android layout XML files format.
I sat there for about 10 minutes trying to wrap my head around d this absurd specification they agreed upon with the client. The code looks SHIT and every time I copy some beautifully formatted reference code into this project it turns into a piece of unreadable garbage.
But since I'm just a part-timer and the senior developer working on this project for some years now is much more experienced than me, I'm hesitant to criticise it more than I already did.
Maybe I'll start arguing with industry standards and the improvement for new developer to read our code... -
I’m a full stack developer, working with React. Also before this I used to be an OK hobby artist (for sketching and painting, that is), but man I SUCK at designing websites!! I don’t have that designer’s mind at all. At work that’s not an issue because we have guidelines and such, but when I’m doing free time projects it always looks so ugly and amateurish.
How can I improve, should I take some graphic design course, or is there some specific buzz word for graphic design on the web that I should look out for? How can I learn standards of margins, buttons, text and such in a good way. Some people just seem to have it in them already!
Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated!5 -
I've spent two days of holiday to setup CircleCI. And I can't **believe** how hard they make such an essential service. I've uploaded 16 commits to Github just to fix the configuration. And what's the best part? It still doesn't work! The configuration reference is useless.
*looks at CircleCI*
Oh what's that? They're having a system slowdown? well, GOOD FOR ME... /s -
So notable international development company who promised changes by 8 days ago but halted dev 2 weeks before delivery and claimed they were shippable but need to meet with us first admits that was a lie without admitting it... Also no longer stressing us for the next payment anymore... Looks like the shit is on the other foot now bruv!
lmao
This means 2 more months of me doing analyst and QA work.... I just want to cooooooooooode. I haven't seen the code for this application and I'll have the joy of integrating all the duct tape into our ecosystem. I can hear them reeling the duct tape off all the way in India at this point.
It's probably gonna be so shit... -
I've been looking for an internship for the past couple of weeks and just had another interview today. I was given a simple code test that involved changing some of the features in a small program, nothing too challenging except that the program was insanely buggy and had a tendency to spit out the wrong result if you looked at it funny, and that was before I started touching it. I don't even want to know what production code looks like...1

I need an advise for my capstone project. I'm planning to make an online booking system for a ferry company. Planning to make it for android and ios and maybe for web too. Did some research and found about ionic. Looks amazing but not sure if it's the right tech to use for my plan. Also about the payment gateway, I want the customers to pay on the app or the website directly without redirecting them to other website. Not really sure if I can use paypal with this, also i need the system to accept mastercard and visa.
I did the research, so please no hate, I'm not asking for the code. I just want to know the right tech to use. I'm just super confused and lost right now.8 -
So I had an app idea a while back, but didn't do anything with because I couldn't tell if it was stupid or not. Maybe you all can help me with that.
My family was taking a trip to Washington D.C. I hadn't been there before, and wanted to know what it looked like, but when I searched for images of DC, all I got was images of the monuments there, and not the actual city.
So the app allows people to search and find realistic images of places (ie, Washington DC) that shows what that place really looks like, not just what it's famous for. And, now this isn't some major feature I just thought this would be convenient and cool for the user, a pop-up message of some sort that asks if they're planning a trip there, and takes them to a travel guide site, or a hotel room booking site, etc.
So what do you guys think? Yes? No? Maybe?
Also, I didn't list this as a collab because I don't know anything about actually developing an app (I mean, I'd love to learn I just don't have the time), just a bunch of high school level CS stuff.1 -
Fucking Yeoman, guys.
For a school project I thought I'd try it out to scaffold out my folder structure etc. Ran a php generator (not having commits since 2013) through npm and sipped my coffee while one node deprecation warning after the other filled my terminal.
Now I just feel like I'm sitting with my dick in my hand while staring at what looks like the fucking source code of the Matrix itself.
Does anyone use Yeoman for PHP projects anymore?
Well, at least Grunt works flawlessly 😎 -
You have an array of objects with a startIndex and endIndex representing their position in a string & you want to end up with a nested structure to represent their relation in the string (i.e., A is from 1 to 10, B from 3 to 5, C from 4 to 5, D from 7 to 9). How would you do it?
Input array looks like: https://gist.github.com/AmyShackles...
Desired output looks like: https://gist.github.com/AmyShackles...
(Though what I really have to start with is an object whose keys are the start index and whose values are values of each element in the above input array, so if you can think of a way to morph it without needing to turn it into an array first that’d also be cool)
Figured I’ve been stuck on this part of my side project for long enough that I really should just make a desperate cry for help. ❤️question please help with a little help from my friends man i hate data structures regex parser still killing me5 -
My upright A/C doesn't have both an outside intake and exhaust, just an outside exhaust, so it intakes through the back.
My cat S&D'd right next to the intake while it was on full blast.
just had to evacuate the room and pull the smell out with my grandpa's weird closed-door air purifier thing
(it goes across the entire doorgap at top and bottom and is basically a massive vacuum that sucks everything through an industrial air filter and blows it back into the room cleaner on the other side, looks and works well for being homemade)
on second thought where do all these strange gadgets my family has come from -
So... the guy from my last rant completely screwed up a site he'd been working on for our company (blaming the web hosters for their "shitty config" while it was just an error in his .htaccess).
He then proceeded to do it all from scratch (instead of using already existing stuff like he did before).
He asked me to help him out.
I put as conditions that we where going to do it "my" way, with the tools I am pushing at work (Docker, Git, CakePHP and Sass).
He rejected it (as always) saying: "I don't care if the site looks good or works good, I just want something out of the door ASAP".
So I declined because I just can't work with that mentality.
He asked an intern (of which he actually has no saying but w/e) whom barely understands the basics of HTML and CSS to help him out.
Intern agreed and they started working on it.
Two weeks in and the guy takes a nice two week holiday, leaving the intern all by himself :)
something something "I want it out of the door asap"...
