I wish people would stop claiming their product is an AI when it isn’t.
Guy on product hunt today says his name generator is an AI. This is how he describes the process:
- first it passes your input keywords through fasttext
- we get a random sampling of the top 100 or so words most related to your input keywords
- the top words are used as the dictionary input to a markov chain word generator, which generates 10~15000 random words
- the results are passed again through fasttext, we take the cosine distance of the resulting word to your input keywords (by using the out-of-vocab feature of fasttext)
- the top 100 most relevant results are returned6 -
Phish everyone's slack tokens, make markov chain bots that immitate everyone and delete any messages not coming from the bots.
Have the entire company chatting with itself nonsensically without allowing any human interaction for a whole day.
Then buy the sysadmin their favorite bottle of alochol for the trouble I put them through.1 -
This week I reached a major milestone in a Machine Learning/Music Analysis project that I've been working on for a long time!!
I'm really proud to launch 'The Harmonic Algorithm' as an open source project! It represents the evolution of something that's grown with me through two thesis' (initially in music analysis and later in creative computation) and has been a vessel for my passion in both Music and Computation/Machine Learning for a number of years.
For more info, detailed usage examples (with video clips) and installation instructions for anyone inclined to try it out, have a look at the GitHub repo for the project:

"The Harmonic Algorithm, written in Haskell and R, generates musical domain specific data inside user defined constraints then filters it down and deterministically ranks it using a tailored Markov Chain model trained on ingested musical data. This presents a unique tool in the hands of the composer or performer which can be used as a writing aid, analysis device, for instrumental study or even in live performance."1 -
A beautiful gem ticket from a manager today:
Title: "Check Stripe "Snippet APK" that might help for integration into the app to track pricing easily."
Alright, it's very clear this particular individual has no idea what they are talking about, but, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and read the ticket description!
Description: "I think stripe offers some sort of snippet that can be implemented into the app similar to FB pixel. (I could be wrong here..) let’s briefly check this, if it’s of value for our A/B-Tests → e.g. if it makes your life easier = good otherwise it’s not important."
...
I might as well replace the management team with GPT-3 at this point.
Or even just a simple Markov chain; that'd probably be more accurate if you want to match the ticket quality more exactly of this ABSOLUTE PILE OF HORSESHIT WASTE OF TIME I GET FED EVERY SINGLE FUCKING DAY.
