Something which I felt inspirational.. As a programmer or as a Human being, it's our duty to teach others what we know well !
(My Personal opinion)36 -
My views on the github/MS thingy.
I've had to explain in at least 20+ rants that some people might have legitimate reasons/opinions for disagreeing with this deal. I find it quite bad that I even have to say this but that aside for this rant.
Microsoft is a commercial company which does a lot for open source, that's a fact.
In my case, I mostly look at the part of Microsoft in regard to how they treat users and user privacy as this, in my opinion, shows for a great deal how trustworthy a company is.
It's publicly known that Microsoft joined the prism surveillance program in 2007 which in my opinion also meant selling out all users.
Next to that, through at least windows 10 it has done quite intrusive user tracking which I also see as a betrayal to its users.
I could go on and on about cases but I've made my point on at least microsoft.
As for github selling itself to Microsoft, this most likely means that it'll also be integrated within the prism network. That's my main point of concern as to why I disagree of this deal and have lost my trust in github for selling to a company which, imo, has absolutely no respect for its users' privacy and has ethics I entirely disagree with.
I still haven't formed an opinion on the rest of arguments out there as, due to a medical thing, I'm hardly able to focus right now.
You might agree or disagree, that's your very right and that's perfectly fine. Just don't say that I haven't come with an actual argument/opinion as for why I disagree with this deal.20 -
If you come to me, and ask for my opinion about something, then you throw “You’re wrong” at my face. Then why the fuck did you ask me in the first place? Fucking cunt21
-
Anyone who creates a Facebook Libra account and puts money in it and uses it to buy stuff/for transactions should have their fucking voting rights removed and be submitted to a mental health institution.
Just my personal opinion.27 -
I've had this twice in a very short period of time now and it really pisses me the fuck off.
Sitting in the train (I think the grammatically correct version is on the train but no that would be a little too dangerous for me I think), on my phone devRanting/Signalling/Rioting around when an an elderly person says (aiming towards me):
"Oh, youngsters and their technology, where has socializing gone? Why are you people always on your phones? Go socialize sometimes!"
Excuse me but fuck right off.
Because you know what, I am currently socializing.
Just not in the way you are used to or maybe even 'okay with'.
I'm talking with friends from all around the world (Signal + Riot), participating in interesting discussions (on here) and what not.
I do have very strict rules for myself though. When in company with people I am actually going to socialize with or when hanging out with friends, the phone goes the fuck away unless I NEED to be reachable.
But I'm on a fucking train with people I don't know and frankly I'm done with socializing for the day as I've had to hear (often stupid) people asking for help all day long.
Next to that, I don't know you, you don't know me, who am I to judge you? I'm not going to socialize with anyone here anyways and even if they'd like to, I'm fucking done with people for to-fucking-day.
Sincerely fuck off please.11 -
Her: What do you do?
Me: I'm writing my thesis on bringing AI to smartphones.
Her: I think AI is terrible!
Me: oh, you are an engineer too?
Her: No
Me: oh, you've studied economics and or ethics and are worried about its implications on society?
Her: No, but have you?
Me: I have a degree in economics, an MBA and an now about to get my BSc in CS.
Her: well, regardless I still think it's terrible.
Me: well in that case how about you shove your unfounded opinion where the sun don't shine!18 -
Unpopular opinion:
The "I hate everyone" mentality doesn't make you quirky or unique, it likely just means you're a real pain in the ass to deal with and/or have the social skills of a rock.
My name's Stux, and thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.40 -
With the wake of some rants shouting at Linuxers who express their opinion in a considered to be very not good way, I decided to make such a rant. Not to be annoying but because, although I get that fanboyism in that way isn't even good in MY opinion, I do think that one should be able to express their opinion.
But, If you'd like to express your opinion, I think you at least should do that with some good arguments. Not everyone might agree with those arguments but hey, that's the point of opinions sometimes :)
I don't hate windows/mac for being windows or mac. Nope.
I hate the systems for not giving the user freedom to do what they wish with the system but more importantly, for integrating their users in worlds biggest mass surveillance program AND on top of fucking that, not giving peoples the option to look at the source code aka at what's ACTUALLY going on in the system. Next to that, Windows 10's data collection is officially not legal in the netherlands so don't even try justifying their fucking data slurping.
Of course there's a chance that they don't contain any bad stuffs but since the Snowden revelations I don't trust those commercial companies anymore on their 'blue' eyes.
Yeah, I've ranted about this before, I know, felt like doing it again in combination with my reason above. I also know that I will probs receive hate for this but oh well, i'm used to that by now.
So yeah, windows and osx: go fuck yourself.21 -
Dear senior developer with xx years of development experience, please, I BEG OF YOU hear my humble unprofessional opinion.
Not every junior is a inexperienced low life.
Even though I'm glad that I'm working with someone of your wide skill set and expertise, I'm not working with you by choice nor it is my intention to distract or "steal" your knowledge.
When I suggested using a newer version of jQuery for this new project that didn't mean I'm challenging you to work on something new for your domain, I'm merely suggesting this change because jQuery 1.2 is just old and a big portion of it is deprecated.
When I suggest some changes on your CSS selectors that doesn't mean I'm acting out of place, it is my genuine interest of having effecient css where possible.
I know you (in your opinion) are the best full stack developer in the industry, but maaaan you kill me when you use js and regex to validate input type=email (table filp) ... Haalllloooo it's 2017 this Sunday aren't we supposed to progress instead of remaining in the same old same ?
RANT!!!10 -
Small update on my UWP File Explorer:
Got some nice work done on the Navigation Box. A right click (Or long tap on touch displays) gives a context menu with subfolders, as opposed to the Classic application which had a drop-down button (This is not as friendly for touch, in my opinion)
A left click navigates to that folder.
Been a bit sick from my surgery, so not much progress these past few days, but I'm still happy with this.14 -
got a mail 10 minutes after I finished a 10h shift that my contract won't be refreshed after 4 years ripping my ass off for this fucked up organization. apparently not because of lack of competence but of personal reasons. that's what you get for not being a sheep and having an opinion. my (ex)boss didn't even have the balls to say it to my face.
fuck them! I don't need people like that around me - neither in my spare time nor at work - and I wish them all the worst.
happy holidays motherfuckers!5 -
Today I told my lead developer that I liked star wars episode 8.
I got grilled pretty hard.
Like, I can drop a db and the motherfucker ain't gon give a fuck. But God forbid a mofocka likes episode 8.
That is a big no no to him.
Manager had told me that I should keep that opinion of the movie to myself.
Lesson learned.13 -
So making a website for my best friend who soon to be my girlfriend.. I sort of had this idea where I'm going to ask her out and the links are the letters that I wrote to her when we first met. Cheesy I know but give me your thoughts and opinion. #noobwork. About it. Or what should I add or take away.. kinda nervous.22

*sigh*
I got rejected today by a company I really wanted to work at. In my opinion the interview went great, but now I feel terrible and defeated.
I keep trying to keep a tough act around my girlfriend..but I feel like crying, so I decided to share this with you guys..12 -
When a normal person says "IMHO", it means "In my humble opinion"
When a programmer says "IMHO", its means "You are wrong".6 -
*team convo*
Dev: We will create another branch for the changes and merge them when required.
Director: Can we not do the changes in the current branch and comment them out until required? I think that’s cleaner and not confusing in my opinion.
Beautiful mf!6 -
Unpopular dev opinion:
I like ending lines of code with semicolons. It helps add structure and organization. My code feels naked without them. After learning to code in JavaScript and Java, it's force of habit to put them, and python's lack of them is one of the reasons I hate it's syntax
Maybe I'm old fashioned. All the hipster languages either make semicolons optional or usually actively discourage them
Idk I like them though13 -
Dear self,
If you start a statement with “I think”, you do not have to also edit statement to add “in my opinion”. This is redundant and silly.
Sincerely,
Why are you so freaking timid?14 -
I actually like Microsoft these days. Despite developing on Mac machines, we use VSTS for code repo, build/release pipelines and work item tracking, and Azure for all things cloud. It all works incredibly well together and at low cost.
Microsoft has changed ethos massively in the last few years. In my opinion, the classic dev mantra of “Microsoft is shit and evil, Linux is flawless” is outdated and getting kind of boring.6 -
DISCLAIMER: UNPOPULAR OPINION
I'm tired of the Linux community, they effectively discourage me of taking part in any discussion online
I'm currently making Windows-only soft, some game stuff, some legacy DirectX stuff you got it.
Everytime I go online, this shitty pattern happens, when I stumble upon a problem in project I don't know how to fix and I ask for help
These are responses
- HA, HA, WINDOWS BAD, HA, HA, GET REAL SYSTEM
- In Linux, we can do X too. I mean it has 4x less functionality and way shittier UX and is even harder to implement but it can probably work on too Linux, so it's better, yes, just move to Linux
- btw you didn't like Linux before? Try this distro man, it's better <links random distro>
Is there anything valuable in the Linux community? I feel like these people don't like Linux anyway, they just hate Windows. Every opinion, tip is always opinion based. Anyone who works on internals knows how much better and how well thought is Windows kernel compared to Linux kernel. Also, if someone unironically uses Linux distro on desktop PC then he's a masochist because desktop Linux is dieing. So many distros ceased work only this year.
Is it a good tool for servers and docker containers? I don't have my head stuck up my ass to admit that yes, it's much better than Windows here.
This community got me stressed right now, I fear that when I go to bathroom or open my microwave there's gonna be a Linux distro recommendation there
😠😡😠😴48 -
Somewhat unpopular opinion time. I don’t 100% hate Facebook.
I do not support their data collection, but my biggest problem with FB is the users. My connections are inherently idiots because I’m in high school with people who are way too narcissistic and full of drama. I left FB because of the toxicity, and the data protection as a result was a bonus.
I support the original mission of Facebook, to connect people. I just wish it was still about that.4 -
One of the main reasons I completely left windows and osx for Linux is the fact that Linux is open source. In an era of mass surveillance, secret court orders ordering companies to build in backdoors into their products, companies building in tracking into their software and so on, I find it irresponsible to use closed source software.
Only my personal opinion though.8 -
One of my favorite things on vacation is to lazily read through work e-mails, spot threads where my opinion/decision is required, and completely ignore them as my boss spirals into utter panic.1
-
I was curious what's the current demand ranking of programming languages and found this. Calling SQL a programming language and putting iOS instead of Swift makes the ranking not credible in my opinion.20
-
Stackoverflow is an awesome way to find answers to programming problems. It can also be a toxic place in my opinion. I quit posting questions a few years ago. Whenever I posted a question after searching everywhere for hours and trying to be as constructive and everything as possible and making sure it wasn't a duplicate question, it would still be closed as non constructive or down voted or something else. This is why I also dislike stackoverflow next to it being really helpful very often.11

Why is it that when someone mentions they really like windows or that someone should/might want to install windows, hardly anything happens (maybe some funny comments from linuxers but no hate or anything) (same goes for OSX) but when someone makes the same comment about linux, they get burned into the ground as a 'Linux nazi'? I am not only talking about devRant (it happens here sometimes as well) but also about my study and real life.
If someone would mention that it might be useful to install windows or OSX over Linux, it was all good but the FUCKING SECOND I mention it might be useful (or other linuxers) to use/install Linux, we are immediately put away as Linux nazi's.
On devRant I've tried to keep this shit to myself because I don't want to start wars but I think I am going to quit doing that and actually show my fucking opinion. Yes, that might also result in some people seeing me as a fucking linux nazi but fuck being burned into the ground every time I give my opinion regarding this.
Fucking hell. (nothing personal to any devRanters by the way but I am starting to get really tired of this shit).40 -

Guy using VPN:
why would anybody use tor unless he hides something?
Me (using Tor):
why would anyone use VPN unless he hides something?
In my opinion there is no difference in using Tor than in using VPN, it's all about privacy. I would consider Tor as an free alternative for your everyday privacy needs, if you can't afford VPN, or am I wrong?22 -
Hello everyone,
I am a french student and I was wondering if college sucks everywhere ...
This is my third college year and I have the feeling that I am wasting my time.
I am in a quite good engineering school but most of the programming courses suck because «teachers» are clueless about the course that they give.
I am not here to tell that «I am better than them blabla» but I just wanted to know if the quality of education has slightly dropped not only in France.
I am really interested in your opinion, feel free to debate in the comments :)21 -
I recently received a 1 star review in the App Store. I have answered him twice to ask about which issues he had and what features were missing to him.
He responded really aggressively by posting this:
I purchased this app for my Sonos and found it very simple for an app I had to pay for. I gave it a 1 star and wrote why. Since then the designer has contacted me twice complaining about my review. Sorry, but I am entitled to my opinion and I want you to stop harrassing me because I think your app is basic and doesn't always work right.
DO NOT WRITE ME AGAIN. Suck it up and let me have my own opinion for what I paid for. If you don't like it, make the app free in exchange for 5 ego stars.7 -
Reading books, not sure if you can even call it a non-dev activity since it is essential in my opinion but reading improves my programming skills everyday!

IntelliJ!! In my opinion its the best IDE for Java and Kotlin and it supports you to code better

In my opinion during the past 18 hours devRant has gone from a great resource - to a must have indispensable developer community. It shows the power of Internet communication.
So many new developers arriving are making it so much more fun and valuable. I enjoyed devRant before but now it is amazing.
I am having a tough time keeping up - which is great.4 -
Eclipse is in my opinion one of the worst IDE's EVER!!!!11!

I really miss Visual Studio :(23 -
In my opinion flutter is the best for cross platform mobile applications
Better than ionic, nativescript and xamarin for now14 -
No crazy prep, ever.
I always go in with a 'this is me, these are my skills, that's all you're going to get' mindset.
I of course do some research (about the company, their culture, technologies and stuff like that) but I find it kinda weird to spend a big amount of time on interview prep when there is a chance of rejection. (personal opinion)4 -
I have finally started to work on my personal site, just made the best photo for the background in my opinion
Any tips of what I should add or remove on the photo and any tips of what sections to add on the website27 -
"We don't use a VCS like git, what are you opinions on this?" This is great in my opinion. You get to see some people sheepishly agree and say it's fine and try back it up, or people put valid points why they think it's wrong. You can start to gauge a person's personality after a few of those kinds of questions.4
-
You know what really grinds my gears? When new employees start shouting out suggestions of what feature we should do.. and how stupid this/that thing now.. or how slow that page is.. or how there's a bug somewhere.
WHAT WOULD'VE WE DONE WITHOUT YOUR OPINION?! thank you so much!!!
+10 points if their job has nothing to do with product or development
SHUT. THE. FUCK. UP

Some of the guys in our team like to throw pranks once in a while. So they printed a version of my ID with Mr. Putin's face instead of mine (a decent upgrade in my opinion) and put the paper on top of my ID. I was walking with it around the office for God knows how long until I noticed.2

I got a little pissed over the quality of a website. They asked me for my opinion and they had the gall to try and skew that opinion. Not very truthful, and if anything says a great deal about what this company stands for.undefined fix your fucking website it's a disaster you say you can manage but you manage shit fuck mml1

I'm a game designer student in a Brazilian university. In my class I'm the only one who likes code and made the secure choice to be a future game programmer.
But recently some dudes on my class started to discourage me and telling me to give up that course and change to a computer science course.
I didn't feel that way... I think game programmers who know all the stuff and process of game development( modelling, concepts etc) are better professionals than the ones who just knows the scripting process. But sometimes their opinion flows up my head and I feel so unknown if I staying in the right way or not.
(Sry if my english still bad..hope you all understand anyway)17 -
Sometimes I see advice given to others that is either clearly wrong or even dangerous, but it's not socially acceptable to call them out on it because 'everyone is entitled to their opinion'.
Yes, you're right. I'm entitled to my opinion based on doing this for 20 years and facing your exact, usually "junior" situation a hundred times. You did a code camp earlier this year and still think JSX is part of the Ecmascript standard.
There is a difference, and not being able to point it out without being scolded for being "entitled" (ironically) is slowly draining me of any interest in helping others.
How the fuck do you cope with this?18 -
Super trivial but who ships a laptop to a new employee with random software on that is clearly for their own preferences? I don't use classic shell, I don't like classic shell, and it hugely fucked with both my opinion of the new place (an IT company, ffs) and my estimation of the person who configured it. Do whatever shit you must on your own machine but get out of my way and let me use the fucking os without more pointless shit! I wouldn't do this to you, no matter how much I might love some obscure additional layer for primarily nostalgic reasons. Raging!7

Best of both Worlds: Android on Phone, OS X for working. In my opinion everyone should use what he/she likes best. So no offense to anyone :) btw: I know that the Android Sticker doesn't look 100% like the original one.. it's all about the message behind it :)2

Dear Contractor,
Please understand that the reason I have hired you is so I could offload fairly marginal tasks and projects to someone else so that my work queue stops being a constipated mess of things that need done. HOWEVER, if you continue to freaking need constant hand holding I'll do the damn project myself. STOP ASKING ME EVERY 30 SECONDS IF I HAVE AN OPINION ON WHAT FUCKING TEXT EDITOR YOU SHOULD BE USING.
Good help is so hard to find.
Sincerely,
Sr. Developer -
How Bad I'm at frontend Development: about 3 year ago i accidentally wrote </from> instead of </form> while working on the frontend of a website, everything just went bonkers. Took me 10+ hours to realize my mistake.
In my opinion frontend devs are real hero they have to learn multiple frameworks, and make website respinsive and work on IE at the same time. Idk Why the fuck clients still want their website to work on IE (fuck you Carl, your users are of age group 15-22 they don't even know wtf IE is)
P. S. At that time i didn't knew HTML validators are a thing.6 -
STOP FUCKING TYPING FOR 5 FUCKING MINUTES YOU FUCKING TORTOISE FINGERED FUCK. I DO NOT WANT TO STARE AT MY CHAT WINDOW WAITING FOR YOUR FUCKING ENLIGHTENED OPINION ON WHICH FUCKING FOLDER TO PUT YOUR BUG IN.4

Unpopular opinion:
I currently work remotely, but as it's my first job I would love to work locally with other devs in a room... Motivating can be quite hard sometimes when you're alone.
(And I know this attitude will probably change once I worked locally some time)3 -
What kind of developer are you and what is your opinion on other development areas?
Me: Junior dev, oriented towards full stack and Android(with a sysadmin background):
-Low-level(kernel development, embedded, drivers, operating systems, reverse engineers)- Badass, I wish I could do that.
-Mobile apps- awesome but too high level sometimes.
-Full stack/Backend- awesome.
-Web Frontend- fuck HTML+CSS. JS is cool I guess.
-Enterprise applications(e.g SAP) Pajeet, my son.
-Malware development- Holy shit that is awesome.
-Video Game development- was my dream since childhood.
-Desktop apps- No opinion.4 -
I try to convince my boss to choose Slack and not Microsoft teams.
What's your opinion on these apps ?14 -
It might be a stupid question, but:
Do the full-stack devs of you actually have that function in the job contract or does it just say "(junior/senior) software developer"?
Mine says just "Software Developer" and in my opinion it sounds just too generic and undervalued for what I'm actually doing...22 -
GIT IS TRASH
WHAT'S THAT, YOU SAY? I'M JUST BEING AN IDIOT WHO ISN'T GOOD AT USING GIT? I DON'T GIVE A CRAP ABOUT YOUR OPINION, I SAY! (eventhoughitstrue). I NEED TO VENT MY ANGER, AND GIT SHALL BE MY VICTIM.

After using linux as the main os for the last two weeks, here are the biggest drawbacks of linux in my opinion.
1. AMD hybird apus are not supported by linux kernal and it's very lousy.
2. Cannot do any graphics related work without having my screen going black several times.
3. Using dual screen is not reliable, and black screen occurs in one or both screens.
4. The computer goes crazy after waking up from suspend mode and gets overheated!
5. Kernal updates! Is much worse than Windows updates. At least after the painful windows update restart you know everything will be ok, but with linux good luck!!!
6. Realtek Wifi dongles still suffering since 2010.
In my opinion, if you are going to use linux for the first time make sure your hardware is compatible with linux, else be ready for a fight of unstable hardware problems.17 -
tldr; devRant is great
My favorite part of devRant is I ask an opinion on a technology and so many people give me alternatives or ideas to look into and learn about instead. This is why I enjoy this community I'm always learning about new things i probably wouldn't have heard about otherwise. Or at least wouldn't have run into for a long while. Thank you all1 -
Ahhh yes Prof, because I really want to be doing more work than I need to be...
// Tedious string concatenation.
System.out.println("a: " + a + " b: " + b);
// Output using string formatting.
System.out.printf("a: %d b: %d\n", a, b);
But, hey that's just my opinion.3 -
HAHA! Google just got fined 4.34bn EUR by the EU! According to the EU they forced manufacturers to preinstall their search app and browser. In my opinion, a fine like this is a nice statement, but doesn't really affect a company that makes 111bn US$ per year. I think there needs to be proper taxation for GAFA!
What do you guys think?10 -
Honestly, mentoring is in my opinion the best part of the job. My firts mentee was a student in my last job, smart af but lazy and unable to trust in herself. I wasn't really too sure in myself at the time either but since I had to teach hery craft there was no place for me to doubt myself.
So I taught her everything I knew and in turn I learned to trust myself and once I had mastered the art of self confidence I could make her believe in herself. Since then I trained five more test automation engineers, some of them might be close to surpassing their 'master' (though won't make it easy for them 😏) and with every Single one I've developed a deeper understanding of my craft by explaining. I needed to research stuff I never questioned to answer their questions and therefor became better at what I do.
Three weeks ago I got an email from the girl I first mentored, she's in another company now and she thanked me for what I taught her. In my opinion I did a rwally Bad job at it (it was my first time teaching) but reading someone actually believing that one made an impact in their life is something special.
I always loved talking about my craft and I love sharing the knowledge I aquired. Test automation is not a thankfull craft but I'm always happy whenever I can interest someone in it and I fully enjoy seeing them grow and improve into fully fledged TAEs. -

In my opinion the image feature on devRant is not very user friendly. I think following points should be changed:
- In the rant preview the image has always a 1:>=1 ratio. This means that you can't see the full image unless the image has exactly a 1:1 or smaller ratio.
- To see the image in fullscreen mode you have to tap two times. In my opinion that's just too cumbersome. Often when i browse through devRant and i see a image i just scroll along because i don't wanna tap two times to see the image.5 -
This was when I was pursuing my bachelors degree. One of the professors was of the opinion that only her code was right and anything else is wrong! For example if she did something with a for loop and I did the same with a while loop, my answer would be wrong -_- What the hell -_-
(Also, often her code would be wrong too and sometimes wouldn't even compile.. She used Notepad btw)10 -
Damn Google.
"hey my company I like diversity, and agree with our goal but think we are punishing people for voicing an opinion that we could accomplish our values of nondiscrimination using better methods"

Material Design on the web was not a good experience in my personal opinion. I see these spaces around the boxes that are too huge. The faded underlined input boxes are confusing, too. I'd rather prefer seeing a border all around the input box or something of similar representation than an underline with a distracting animation. Many also fail at placing the buttons with a transparent background on the right spot. I'd still prefer Semantic UI or something clean on my upcoming projects. To me, Material Design is really good for mobile interfaces though.5

People talk about how the Linux desktop is coming along. I don't really give a shit about Linux's viability as a desktop OS, or attempts to give it general appeal. In my opinion, that just introduces hits in performance and flexibility. It's a great desktop because I know what I'm doing. I want that. That doesn't have great appeal, but I don't care. Gnome, Unity, KDE, and Cinnamon are user friendly, but heavy as fuck.5

I don't even particularly care for C# - mostly because I don't like Pascal Case and it's a Microsoft Original and I don't want MY source code spying on ME... But still... every single one of the points that guy tries to make is either IDE-specific, not a big deal or even an advantage in my opinion!
What bothers me the most, however, is the way he subtly tries to force his own opinion upon his readers. "It doesn’t matter if you disagree with everything else in this article: case-sensitivity alone is sufficient reason to ditch C#!" - quote end!
Real sneaky fella.11 -
Last year I had to program most of my projects in Python. I like the language, don't get me wrong. But man oh man if you indent your line of code one too many fucking times, it can be such a pain in the ass to find your error...
Even if it may clutter your code (not in my opinion), that's why I love them curly brackets and languages which use them <39 -
I am seeing more and more of these political statements and politically correct bullshit on coders forums up to the point where i got to the conclusion the *phobic people are being harassed for sharing an opinion of their own and attacked most of the time.
Are the *philic people actually themselves *phobic, and thus attacking anything that might conform their uncertainties? Is that the case?
Because unless you act upon your opinions you are not guilty of anything. If another is offended by your opinion isnt that an oppression of the sort?
I fear this will one day become a standard in forums that *phobic people should be more attentive to their opinions and shit i mean we are coders if we see beautiful code who the fuck cares what the coder is or represents if ur code is good i fucking love you and thank you. Now on the other hand my opinion of what you represent or what you are offends you? Well fuck sounds like a personal issue!
Fucking twats!13 -
So the makers of Sublime Text are working on a GUI Git client now?
It looks really interesting, could be a good alternative to Gitkraken!
Here's the link btw: https://www.sublimemerge.com
What I would really like to see is a plugin support! I don't know of any Git Client that has that...
Anyways, I will try it out later and post my opinion here!4 -

My friend recently went through technical interview for a very specific position in very niche technology. Which I will call technology A.
He is an expert in technology A, but interview was in technology B. All questions were about technology B, which has very little to do with technology A.
After few days, my friend received written replay. In section about technical knowledge about technology A, interview wrote his opinion based on technology B. Even if he didn't ask any question related to technology A, because he has never heard of it. Of course my friend didn't get that job6 -

A lot of people give Google, Facebook, Microsoft, etc. shit for "selling" user data although in my opinion acting as a matchmaker between advertisers and users does not really constitute selling data.
In contrast there seem to be a lot of companies that actually do sell user data that I never hear anyone here talking about.5 -

Is it gay to like Ed Sheerans music?
He’s one of the few new people with actual talent in my opinion.
Many people say men listening to Lana del Rey are gay so I don’t give a shit anyway.
But I’m still wondering.
How many of the guys without a life (like me) here listen to and actually enjoy listening to Ed Sheraan?

Hi devRant;
What’s your opinion on ‘open source’
Pros for and cons against its use. I’m curious
Reason for my question
I just met a programmer on the bus who is vehemently against open source starting he goes out of his way to not use anything ‘open source’
I myself use open source tools everyday in both my programming classes and outside projects. I vehemently believe the global collaboration potential of the open source concept is key to building bigger and better software and hardware in the future10 -
A client asked for a tool for his website. So I built it for him and he was satisfied with the thing, cause it did what it should. Nevertheless I was not, because it kind of had a messy backend. I made it working and charged my time. Now I am wondering if I should rebuild the thing to satisfy my code quality for free, or just keep that thing as ugly as it is....
What your opinion on this?6 -
I'm looking at old code that I wrote around half a year ago, and noticed that my coding style changed over time (relying more on arguments to pass messages between commands and functions, rather than sourcing the result of a command). I feel like this old code isn't truly mine anymore. It's thousands upon thousands of lines of code though... Given that, would you rewrite it or just move along with the existing design? I mean in my opinion the current code really sucks.4
-
Just my opinion, but Code reviews are a shit practice. In my previous company, we used to have one every Saturday. I presented my code and when everyone couldn't find anything to bitch/moan about, they said my code isn't "aesthetic" to look at. It's because I wrote this
if(condition)
do_thing;
instead of
if(condition) {
do_thing;
}
I cringe everytime I remember that incident.19 -
I see lots of ranting about bosses or team members.
My boss values me a lot and my team is open to discussing amd value my opinion.
What the fuck to I rant about? fml1 -
Continuation of the issue I had yesterday, and a realization of just HOW FRICKING STUPID C++ could be. Basically, yesterday my code for class was skipping a line of user input code, I checked the code for hours to see if I missed anything, if anything was out of scope, both input's I was using were back to back and absolutely identical all the way from the implementation both equaling "\0" and I couldn't figure why only one of the input lines were being ignored. Out of desperation posted the code on here (see my last post). Welp, I finally fixed it, and BOY AM I SO SIMPLE. cin.ignore().
TL;DR
Dumb issue, dumb solution (in my opinion)2 -

my question: "what if old bug will appear in all off 100500 branches? we will need fix all the versions of bug in different copies we have modified!"
boss said:"c'mon when we will get this problem then we will think about it. all the devs in world working on many versions. its easy."
your opinion?2 -
My boss has a weird habit of asking my opinion and then proceed to choose the worst option. So one day he asked what Java for Web framework we should use I said we should use Spring, we are currently using JSF. Then he asked what version control we should use I said git. Guess what, he decided to use SVN. Next time I'm going to say the worst option maybe that will make him choose the better one.2

I am Graduate student of applied computer science. I am required to select my electives. Now i have to decide between Machine Learning (ML) and Data Visualization. My problem is Machine Learning is very theoretical subject and I have no background in ML in my undergrad. In data visualization, the course is more focused towards D3.js. Due to lack of basic knowledge i am having second thoughts of taking ML. However, this course will be offered in next Fall term. And i am also studying from Coursera to build my background till that time.
I know there is no question here but I need a second opinion from someone experienced. Also, please suggest any other resource that I should look into to build my background in ML.3 -
'Google knows everything about you.'
'Facebook records conversations.'
'Personalized ads manipulate you.'
Guess that's why YouTube showed me an ad in Spanish yesterday. Or why I never clicked on an ad. Or why only every 1 in approx. 10 ads is somewhat relevant to me (and thats with me explicitly stating my interests in ad personalization options).
I don't have anything against shielding your privacy. It's your right not to use a product if you don't want to, but I don't see how people can make these statements without providing solid proof.

So I've been self teaching myself Python, which I've loved learning. However I hit a wall. I'm terrible with large project ideas, which has brought everything to a halt.
Being that I loved learning python, I'm thinking of picking up a second language to fill the void & expand my knowledge. I've dabbled a little bit in Java & Haskell. Go looks pretty interesting.
In your opinion what would be a good complementary language to Python?9 -
So Is it just me thinking that no one would pay for my work (web dev, IT stuff etc...), because it is so easy to build a website for example. I'm kinda beginner, what's your opinion on wordpress? I don't get all the hate for Javascript, or I might be spoiled with ES6 and React clouding my judgement. :P

No Rant:
I guess I will start a religous discussion with it but I want your opinion on what tool I should learn.
Vim or Emacs (or stay with my IDE)?
For all of my programmer life I used IDEs... From Eclipse over CodeBlocks over VS to IntelliJ.
But now I realized that I want to be one of the cool kids. And using plain IntelliJ is uncool. No matter how much I love this tool.
So now I want to invest some time into learning. I never managed to do much in Vim since all code-completions sucked ass, feedback on syntax errors was bad and I never saw how I could be any faster with that shit compared to what IntelliJ does for me.
Will Emacs solve all those problems? Will Emacs make me code 1000 times faster and make having a mouse useless?
Or am I just too dumb for Vim? Can Vim itself do what my IDE does for me? Will it make me look as cool as I want to be?
Or should I stick to IntelliJ and just install Vim bindings?
What is your opinion on Vim vs Emacs vs any IDE?10 -
Guys need your opinion. How bad of a thing is it if I change my job in just a year. Stuck in a toxic team. I’m a Class of 2020 undergrad, joined my current firm for the’brand’ but my experience and expectations have been polar opposites. I’m not able to put myself 100% behind to look for other jobs as I keep worrying that switching this early would hurt my profile long term.
Just wanted to hear what yall think.10 -
Start a company after finishing school for not to be a slave to other companies. (It won't be easy)
Either way, I'd like to follow a path that I genuinely feel good about. Otherwise it's soul destroying to work just for the money. You have to always believe what you're doing for achieving something serious in life in my opinion.
Oh, and stay away from Windows. -
Anyone else hates this kind of statements:
if ( doSomething() != SUCCESS ) {
//log error
}else {
//continue doing other stuff

I simply find that confusing. This is much better:
If ( doSomething == SUCCESS ){
//continue doing other stuff
}else {
//log error

Maybe just my opinion.17 -

currently thinking about asking my boss if I can make a training / qualification for scrum master.
when PM is trying so hard to shove *his* scrum down our throats and at the same time tries to block any scrum-related criticism of team members that question his behavior as SM AND PO, then maybe convincing my boss to become the new SM and shoving ALL the scrum down the PMs throat is the only chance to have a (bit more) bearable working environment in this project.
in my opinion, he has too much power.

They already have a battle mechanic, they would just need to enable ai battle algorithms and ambient encounters.

I know I'm getting old from small signs like:
- I like mentoring newcomers even fresh graduates, explaining them everything they have to know, answering all of their questions if I can (I had some really bad mentors before as newcomer)
- These newcomers always learns faster than I expect and shortly they works faster than us
- On the other hand senior members asks my opinion about some decisions or technical issues even if I barely know more about that topic. (Did I look experienced somewhat?)
- I hardly take overhours and I discourage fresh graduates to do. (I did enough overnights already in my life)1 -
Have had multiple interview rejections already at 20. Strongly feel I am bad at it.
Maybe it's because these are my first few interviews and/or that I'm still in college and don't realise how interviews work.
Really hard not to grudge the interviewer after a rejection. Cunts all of them.

I feel like ubuntu gets too much attention. While it is good (even though I used it for all of about 3 weeks) it gets way too much attention and I don't know why. I can also say the same about mint. These two distros are probably the most well known and I find they actually lack a bunch of things that I love in my distro. Ubuntu has effectively branded gnome and is basically always bragging like "hey look our animations are at a high fps now" when kde plasma has been doing that for ages. Gnome and cinnamon (i find ) lack a lot of customization options and generally aren't really fun to work with. I eventually settled with arch using kde because I wanted an os that was going to be hard but would be forgiving in it's challenges and customiZations and I got that. Ubuntu and mint can be good for first timers but I feel like they get more attention then they should and others don't get as much.
Sorry for the terrible rant with probably a lot of typos. It's late and I have an opinion, it is always dangerous when I have an opinion. I don't mean to offend these distros or their users. What I say is my opinion and what I believe but hey I might be wrong.
Thanks5 -
Just my opinion, but a software dev job shouldn't be stressful for 9+ months of a year.
I understand sometimes the company wants to launch a product on a deadline, so people have to do extra time at work.
Or an urgent bug fix is needed on the system which requires someone to put in overtime.
But a stressful job for all 12 months of a year is just not worth it, whatever the salary may be.
What do you think?7 -
Kinda annoyed at NDA's right now
Can't discuss what I'm working on with old classmates for another opinion. And my co-workers are self-taught on this job as they needed so everything I'm doing seems like magic to them
So they're probably not going to spark that inspiration I need right now
And I can't reach out to the R&D department full of programers with this cause they're heavily behind so we're told no distracting them7 -
Finally got round to signing up to a VPN for my devices and my sons. After a lot of research decided on surfshark, signed up for 3 years with great discounts. BUT, it doesn’t work on iPhone ( tried everything in the help) still bollox. Cancelled it and went for my second choice which was Nord. The software is great. Worked without issue, same on m1 mac. Thousands of servers worldwide. For me this is great and fast. So if you are looking for a fast reliable VPN Nord is the one. PS not affiliated or work for Nord, just an opinion and hopefully save someone else some grief.12

Can we please normalise using JSON bodies for GET requests? Although iv only been developing in android for around 7 months yet I fail to see the appeal of Kotlin.
It has no real advantage over Java. In my opinion its fucking lazy code. It might look pretty but that's about it. So I don't see why employers are opening their arseholes for people with Kotlin experience.
Im pretty sure they are doing it because its "the next big thing". If you can write solid Java I dont know what the big deal is.. Maybe someone can shed some light on this..
Android studio can convert Java to Kotlin with one click. So No Mr employer I do not see your reason why you employed someone over me because he has Kotlin experience. Its fucked!! So that project I handed you... the one where I had pride in my ability to apply solid Java... It’s not the degree itself or even cs specifically that I find useful, but rather that you learn to put thoughts and ideas on paper in a structured manner. Explaining things you think you know is harder than it seems, especially when you know a teacher is going to grade you on how well you explain that thing.
Technology moves too fast these days for a program to he worth it in my opinion but the degree definitely raises the salary roof, so there’s always that. -
Working on a bug that in my opinion never worked. “Sr. Dev” dares to say the function has worked before. I’m a 100% sure it never did.
“Yes but everything is being tested before we go live.”
Dude, we have a monkey testing our stuff are you serious!?3 -
I just can't mention one specific thing because I'll forget everything that would be worth a mention in my opinion too, so let's say I'm so fucking glad to be born right when this technologic wave started to grow :)
-
I hate coding tests for a job interview. I've done three types:
1) university style of "write function that does x" (fizz buzz)
2) this code has a bug, fix it
3) write a program that does this university style contrived thing (exact change)
One and two usually are timed to 10 to 15 minutes per question. Three is untimed but unstated "time counts".
Off all three, the last one is the best in my opinion. However it still seem like we could come up with something better.1 -
50 build minutes per month? what is this, 1990? it's not like atlassian is scraping around for money either....
sheesh
and the rich get richer...
WELCOME CIRCLE CI! (almost TOO generous in my opinion)4 -
Jesus H. Christ. It really did happen! Just moved from vb6 to vb.net. My personal opinion, going with C#, was disregarded but im still happy to leave that abomination behind.
The sad part is that I have gotten pretty good with vb6 🍻 A drink to that!
PS. VB.net is supposed to be simple and readable but I disagree. C# Is way more readable and there is this elegance about the syntax. As a side project I am thinking of learning Go and make a simple cms. -
Drop or be more flexible with the Math requirements. I took every programming course my High School offered including AP CompSci and passed with high grades. I wasn't able to pursue a degree because I wasn't "allowed" to take CS classes without first meeting the Calc 2 prerequisite. I am terrible with Math but programming makes sense to me, I'm good at it, and I enjoy it. I think it's horrible to stop someone from pursuing a degree because of a prerequisite. I understand the Math/CS relationship but being good at math doesn't make you a good developer. Just my opinion, I could be wrong.2

I've been looking for job for a long time now and...
There's no more, just that.
I'm very sad about it, my actual company just doesn't care about my opinion at the dev team...
I've been thinking a lot about go with my own start up. What do you think guys?
Sorry for my bad English :/3 -
What's your opinion on functional shortcuts and 'hacks' in many languages, like map/reduce/filter, ternary operator, lambdas,inner/anonymous classes?
Imo they can make development faster and more efficent but they make the code very unreadable, especially if someone else has to read it, Therefore I try to use them only when it's appropriate. My dev friends use them too much and it makes reading their code a hellish experience, especially in Javascript with Rx.3 -
Not a data loss exactly but a loss indeed.
It was my first week at my first junior developer job, I was just learning git and completely messed it all up. I lost around 3 hours of work.
I didn't want to ask anybody for help (because of that useless junior feeling, you know...) and wasn't as good using Google as I'm now.
So I re-did all the work. Thankfully, I have a decent memory.
If there's something to learn here is ask for help when you've used all your resources and still think you need it. Nobody is going to have a bad opinion about you ;) -
Today I left a post it-note on my desk at work saying “EAGER not LAZY”. Realized that out of context that sounds weird. None of them are positive in my opinion. Hopefully only devs will notice it.3
-
I really find it quite annoying when my colleague refactors my code. I personally don't see the point because I find my code more readable, easy to main and intuitive. That of course is a subjective view. Problem is, there aren't any competent colleagues who can weigh in their opinion on disagreements in the team. In fact, I'm pretty sure they aren't even developers, and have some how infiltrated their way in claiming to be a software developer.
Oh yeah, the manager doesn't review our performance or keep up to date with the work people are doing.
I'm not even exaggerating.1 -
What is the best web full-stack in your opinion?
I have been working with PHP all my life, and I am looking to start something new.3 -
Choose my editor/ide based purely on other people's opinion.
It started when I knew literally nothing about programming. It got better over time, but I still tend to trust other people's opinion before mine1 -
Solarized Dark anyone ? In my opinion one of the best scheme ever invented. Even if you don't like just edit it like you want, it will still be solarized dark.3

I have already been a big fan of Elixir for some time now, but seeing this during my inquiry into Elixir's official catalog of documentation has defanitely galvanized my already colorful opinion of this grate language.4

Need UX opinion.
I need to make a menu which is a single point for everything. Hierarchical menus is the default nowdays, but they get tedious as the entries' list grows and clicks-to-goal can become high af very quickly.
By "single point for everything" I mean that there's only one menu, as tiny (screen-space-wise) as possible, containing hierarchy of options.
What are other options?
What's your opinion on radial menus? I often see them in games and various eye-candies. Radials would solve the overflowed-list problem with classic menus (as radials can have multiple layers of items around the core) and they seem tiny. And I can easily imagine them in touch-enabled devices. How bad are they irl? Are they used in web or just in native apps? What are the trends?
I did my share of research but there's surprisingly little info covering this tool :)4 -
Today on YouTube channels Kiki watches: Fredrik Knudsen.
In my opinion, it has THE most interesting coverage of obscure topics. I loved his two-hours-long video about Deep Blue. Recently, he made a video about EVE Online that is FIVE HOURS long. I know it’s probably very interesting, but can’t build up the courage to start watching.
Oh, and he also covered Mr. Terry A. Davis.

Who led this flattening user input object into the Next.js codebase, also thinking that `runContext` is going to make better companion than `eval`?
Yet another reason to switch over Sapper and other Svelte minimalistic solutions, in my opinion.rant nextjs security react gone wrong pwnfunction this is fine in the light of recent events with log4j code review disasters1 -
Last year my boss decided to outsource a project I did the year before to another company.
Now he wants my opinion on why this company estimates 10h to do an upgrade on a API interface I did on that project.
Like I remember details on what I did two years ago. And like I have any idea how this company is rigged to handle the project. -
I was wondering what do you guys think about companies which dictates which ide devs have to use.
In my opinion every dev should use what he or she can utilize best no matter if a free or paid license is required for the ide.10 -
Going to go on another distro jumping spree but think I'm going to install stock Ubuntu 18.04 on my actual system (Just want to see if it can change my opinion on ubuntu because last physical install i did was the release of 14.04).
Throw me your suggestions to give a gander!
(Also #IUseArch so don't worry, that has firmly been tested, broken, fixed and then fucked beyond reconcile)12 -
What is your opinion on Agile?
I was studying through my textbook for a test tomorrow and the Agile Philosophy section sounded like a Team Rocket manifesto at some parts:
Responding to change over following a plan
Individuals and Interactions over processes and tooks
Working software over comprehensive documentation
Customer collaboration over contract negotiation.4 -
C#
Lately there have been a lot of new features for the language itself, and I fear that a lot of them make the language more and more convoluted.
Also AoT Compilation should be pushed more, but that might just be my opinion.14 -
Sorry for posting this, but I would like to know if you think that this notebook would be good for programming. I will put arch linux on it.
Asus UX31 0UA FC344T Laptop (Intel Core i7, 512GB, 16GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics/Win Home 10) Gold
In my opinion it should be pretty good. It has a decent processer, lots of RAM and a SSD . I won't use it for gaming so I don't think that the bad graphics card is a deal breaker.9 -
to be honest, i hate every OOP, in my opinion it's just add complexity in every way. yet i would like to use Functional Programming but it's fukking hard to learn and hard to get use to. Tryna get used to Haskell.4

Sorry I'm a bit late to the party, what's up with reddit right now?
People are mad because they want money if you use their platform? Like wtf? Of course they do so.
One comment I read had me screaming internally. "I'm deleting all my stuff, I don't want them to make money with my intellectual property!" Thefuck. They make money with the fact they give you a platform for your irrelevant opinion you asshat.
Tbh, I'm just afraid of all the porn I might be unable to access in the future. Does someone archive all and everything tagged with NSFW please?23 -
My manager just rant on twitter .. I think it's time to introduce him this amazing place but I don't want him to listen my opinion about him...
Do we have some kind of block options in devrant??1 -
I love that moment in the company when my opinion does not matter about but the time gives the reason to the crazy tech guy that nobody listen in first place4

Menus and ribbon tabs are the same thing and also my opinion carries more weight than yours. Why yes, this is the only place I've ever worked. How did you guess?

Is granting read access to a client app a good practice? Intefrations should be done through APIs, jms and the like, right? My opinion is it should be a no no to do the integration on the database layer bypassing the app even if both apps are internal service which are completely different products. opinions are much appreciated.9

I took a hakerRank challenge for an interview, I failed miserably.
All challenges included subsequences and I just kept reaching memory limit... My algorithm gets the answer, if just takes forever if the input is too large.
So fuck stupid me.
I am now googling about it but can not find something that explains it clear (in my opinion)
Would appreciate if you guys can recommend some resources.2 -
Whats people's opinion using other design languages on other operating systems.
For example, using the UWP design language on the Xbox android app.
I absolutely hate it... Makes the app look terrible and out of place in my opinion, even worse when they use there square style icon and just put it in a circle for it to 'match' the pixel launcher, for example, LinkedIn -,- -
I have the image of every member of this community to be some top shot dev who's frustrated because others can't keep up. You get that image from the types of rant you see...
It might be the case that the guy who posted a rant about his manager being useless, and the rant getting 100+ ++ is someone who would have never written a test case in his life!!! (in my opinion that's more bad than a shit manager)5 -
!rant. !Stack overflow either because I'm seeking an opinion.
I am an Android developer and I have an i7 5th gen 8GB ram HP machine which is has been very capable for both heavy gaming and Android development. Now kill me for it if you may, but I have been using AS on WINDOWS 10, and I honestly never had any issues.
But should I dual boot my machine with a Linux distro? (most probably Ubuntu).
I don't use the emulator, I test it directly on my device.11 -
I'm 37, been a PHP Web Dev for 12 years. I love doing it but am concerned as I get older, I'm falling behind. I'm not exposed to different tech in my job but am doing courses to vary my skill set (AWS with Docker, vue.js etc)
Is anyone else here over 40 and doing dev work? Any obstacles you found? Or younger peeps, what’s your opinion of older devs? Should I be concerned?7 -

Anybody try to memorize anything large? I am thinking about memorizing books just to do it, and to prove to myself that referencing crap isn't required all the time. Might be interesting.

In your opinion, if Zuckemberg or others IT succesfull people had gone in differents universities, they would have the same success that they have? The question is, how much is important to go in a renowned university where they push you to have success? This morning I got up with this question in my mind9

I make programs for a client and ask for what he wants in it specifically. I make the programs how he tells me and when I get to something I have to decide on I just come up with a nice way of doing it(in my opinion). I finish the project and show it to the client and he gets all pissy saying to change how I did something. Of course that something was something I had to decide on and he didn't tell me how to do. 😐

Can people help me please,
Which one is better Android development (Android studio) or IOS development (Xcode)
I learned a bit of both(still a beginner) and here is what i think so far
Pros:
-Android is more wide spread and is more flexible also i have an Android device (testing)
-IOS development is really fun and intuitive and more money is paid to developers because not everyone has a mac in my country.
Con:
-Android studio is messy and java is really dull imo
-IOS requires a developer account which is really expensive in my country.
Any help is much appreciated even if it is a personal opinion10 -
So, my university has a mandatory community service program where basically students are sent to help developing infrastructure and society in undeveloped parts of the country. I and my team are going to depart in the end of this month.
We're going to help raising IT-literacy level by teaching high school students basic programming with Scratch or Python. Is that too much? Should we just start with teaching Ms. Office instead? Or do you guys have any opinion?4 -
What are staging systems for?
In my opinion (and of my dev co-workers): that everyone can test the software before it’s being deployed to production.
PM (at least based on how they act): that we devs test our software. They will test it when it’s live.
Today: cookie banner was missing, and the page has been on staging for around 3 months and it already has been live for 2 weeks.
No. One. Noticed. That. On. Stage.
Ridiculous.4 -
So we have duplicate code because dumb devs thinks Bootstrap (4) is kick-ass for mobile. 😒 Can't do jack with their tables.
I told them to use Flexbox instead. Bootstrap (even 4) is antiquated and there's better options.
My recommendation is to use Flexbox Grid with React to build a modular living style guide with built in unit testing for styles and interactions.
Basically got told that my opinion is just an opinion and is the same as using Bootstrap. 😭
Anyone have some solid "facts" on Bootstrap I can use in the long run? We haven't even launched anything and we're already in technical debt because of this stupid framework decision. Someone please help. 😞3 -
Hello fellow devRanters !
I've been using Linux Mint / Ubuntu for the last 1.5 years and I'm thinking to switch to something else.
I have some distros like Antergos, Manjaro, Apricity and Solus in my mind but I cannot decide which to choose.
What is your opinion / experience with these ? Some pros / cons would help me a lot ! :D7 -
Anyone find it a little worrying the when amazon AWS goes down a large portion of sites goes down. Just my opinion but shouldn't there be more than one company or subset of that company handling smaller portions of sites?2

I'm not the product manager. I'm not the leader. I'm not even in a lot of meetings. Why my colleagues ask me about product/development decisions?
I appreciate they about wanting to know my opinion, but when they come in a rush it is a bit stressful.
And I am not paid for that.
It might sound about selfish, but the reality is I am not one of those roles (and my salary neither) to avoid exactly this.
Whatever.
At least I can redirect them and not lead with the sublaying reasons of the doubts.1 -
What's devrant's opinion on WordPress blogs?
I've wanted to start a blog for a while to share what I know and learn from others who read and want to correct my mistakes on the blog. But as of now my own site is barely held together and nowhere near ready to host a blog. So while I continue learning and building my skills to eventually make my site more reflective of my abilities I'm considering starting WordPress blog to just start now rather than continue the 'eventually' trend I've been following while working on my site.29 -
Thinking about upgrading my security. Found this interesting project on kickstarter:

It looks pretty promising! Open-Source, no cloud services and Windows Hello support.
What do you guys think about it?
I just want a second opinion before I invest money on it!6 -
Unfortunately I am working in a firm where they consider QAs as some second class citizens. Also the QAs we have right now are purely blackbox testers who doesn't know shit about the system.
In my opinion a QA should know about the system and integration. They should also have decent programming skills.
What are your thoughts?2 -
I guess asking my friends for their opinion is part of my workflow and I really shouldn't do, because their reactions tend to be demotivating and frustrating all the time. As if I don't have enough to worry about already.

Whatever you do on any system, always make sure you know and are able to revert your changes so you can return to the last working system state.

It is basically somewhat similar to "always have a backup". But it goes much further in my opinion because it also implies that you know for certain that a recovery works as well since:
"Nobody wants backup, everybody wants recovery" -
What is your opinion about courses?
I got into the world of development from the world of Sysadmining and security with 10 month long Java course and now doing web courses in my free time.
I feel this really helped me, as before I tried to learn completely by myself but failed. Now I feel much more confident learning by myself(albeit I still feel Noobish as fuck)
How did you learn? Did you take courses? Completely by yourself? Through work?4 -
A question or more discussion / looking for feedback.
Let's say we have
Application Firewall
- Application Routing
-- API Gateway
Then lots of containers.
Would you use host based routing in the containers?
It seems wrong to me, as in my opinion it breaks the boundary the API gateway provides.
Maybe someone can share his experience, I'd be delighted.5 -
Hi there..
I have a strange question (at least in my opinion). I learned Flutter for over 1 year (as of now). I don't consider myself advanced on it, but I'm very capable when it comes to create complex UIs, work with APIs and DBs, etc. However, it came to my mind to visit frontend development. I started with Angular, and I LOVED IT.
I'm wondering, is it possible to master both crafts (i.e., mobile and web development) at the same time 🤔.. I'm really into programming and any CS-related content in general, but I wonder if there's an answer to my question :).8 -

In my country the law says that you get paid sick day after the 3rd consecutive sick day.
Meaning that if you where sick 2 days in a row you won't be paid.
In your opinion:
In the yearly terms update talk.
Is it acceptable to ask the company to pay from the first sick day ?
( It's allowed by law and a lot of companies acctually does it)3 -
I feel stupid about once or twice per day because of samll and obvious mistakes I make.

What's your opinion on Ruby on Rails vs Java?
I'm honestly leaning towards Java for no other reason than look of the code and the fact that it's what my school teaches for comp sci.7 -
My dear developers I would really appreciate if you could recommend me technology for diving into web development. I am thinking about django/python or laravel/php but I am not sure.
I know it is opinion based question but I need your help to decide..9 -
Me and @asafniv cannot settle this argument and we need your conclusion.
What syntax makes more sense, Objective-C or Swift?
In my opinion, Swift's syntax is better than Objective-C, but Asaf's opinion the the opposite.
We failed to settle this argument and that is why we need YOU to give us your opinion.
In the comments I will send 2 identical functions, one is written in Objective-C, and one is written in Swift.17 -

Hey there, I've never really done anything like this but I'm in the second year of college.
I really want to go into the security area, not completely sure but pretty inclined to pentesting.
The question is, what, in your opinion, do you think is a good starting point so I'm pretty much ready to start working when I finish my 5 year course? My college doesn't have any or many security classes, so I'll have to do it all by myself.
Right now I know java, C and html, css and Javascript, which I'm learning by myself.5 -
In your opinion, is it better to work in a dedicated development company (or otherwise dedicated to your IT specialization) or be in-house?
I'm currently one of 2 in-house devs for a small enterprise. So my software engineering practices and code won't be of the highest quality but at this early stage of my career I'm gaining experience in various different aspects of the job and doing many individual different things. So overall I'd say being in-house is good early on for initial exposure, so long as you have a mentor to help you out. -

What's your take on Symfony? My dad is making a project in Symfony but he asked me if the current stack I'm using is better (Rust + Sapper/Svelte). I said Symfony is fine (I have very limited experience in it) but I want to give a more useful response to him. Do big projects inevitably turn into a mess in Symfony? Is it enjoyable to work with? Probably this was asked before many times but I want your updated opinion.
1) What is the best Linux distro you used? Why?
2) Do you still use it? If not, why?
My answer:
1) Debian. Because I find it very comfortable and it run in Raspberry Pi and other small computers. It has the software that I usually use and it's very light.
2) Yes but not as my main OS because the lastest version of software that I use weren't updated yet (and probably they won't update them on a short time). I had to move to W10 as my main OS.5 -

Hello fellow devranters,
I never thought I'd make a post like this but I need your help/opinion.
My thesis work is about to get published, I worked on a C++ software that solves what we call equivalent reactor network models (basically, different ideal chemical reactors interconnected in various ways). This extends an ecosystem in my research group that is OpenSMOKE, and every collateral applications usually follows a xxxSMOKE naming scheme.
I came up with NodusSMOKE (Nodus is Latin for fishing net) first but it doesn't feel right. Other names I came up with are LinkSMOKE or NetworkSMOKE.
I believe here I might find people who are much more creative than me. I kindly ask your help my dudes.2 -
Where is the mac vs ubuntu vs windows war for developers? I am a Windows user (on a dell latitude e5570), but I am considering a new laptop because everyone says macbooks are great and outperform windows (which on gradle builds is true).
I mainly use my laptop only for developing and programming things like: full-stack, Android and a little bit of deeplearning/ML.
So which one would you recommend and why? These are pretty heavy tasks, from my opinion.10 -
Can a React.JS expert help me to understand something?
In short, I would like to know what are the main differences between react version 15.6 and 17, in terms of browser issues, and component compatibility?
We have a legacy code base that is in version 15.6 and the team wants to upgrade it and I am attempting to argue with my dumb CTO to upgrade to version 17. However, I’m not versed in react, I'm just a PO and the CTO doesn't know anything but for some odd reason is adamant about staying on an older version. The developers gave me their opinion but I'm interested in an outside opinion.5 -

So I recently started my internship with a company that has created their own CMS for web development. They are currently looking into developing a hybid app.
I'm lucky enough to be tasked with the development of it since learning their CMS in combination with the frameworks they use would take a couple of months according to them.
Now they have their eyes set on the Cordova framework with Sencha Touch, but I'm also aware of Xamarin
Anyone on devrant who has used both and what is your opinion of the two? -
Being undecided, my first attempt to make a website was first made with django, then pylons, then pyramid (I know, pyramid is the "newer version" of pylons, but they are different enough to be considered different things in my opinion), my first real attempt at making a game was first made with pygame + cython, then cocos2d-x + cython, the cocos2d, then oxygine, now trying to learn unreal engine

My opinion on CSS & component frameworks?
>Build your own and reuse.
Have I done so? No, but always wanted to and I will have the opportunity to build one next year for a company I work for. Best of all, it will be open sourced.
SUPER EXCITED2 -
[Serious] Senior Java Devs, one of the lead dinosaurs of my workplace convinced the higher-ups to make various applications from a new contract using a framework called ZK.
What do you think of this framework and what is your opinion of the overall feeling the java community have about it?
(I'm not personally found of this kind of approach to developing and I'm kinda new to the Java language)8 -
To all my sysadmins/devops, what's your opinion on GoAccess (if you've used it or are currently using it)?

I ask for help
I want you to go to my website and give your opinion on its content, is it good or what?7 -
Quick question.
I feel like I'm quickly developing a Bitcoin addiction. I've figured out how to backup my wallet to 'The cloud's by saving a file to Google drive in case I lose or spike my phone. Tested it out, it works. Got like 98% faith that the crypto is safe as far as not being able to access it like the dogecoin that's sitting on a phone that I still need to repair the screen of. First it was 20$, then 40$ in the BTC ATM. Felt like magic.
My question is:. Is you're opinion of me stupid?14 -
I was looking at 2019 stateofjs survey. I'm really surprised with all this hate towards Angular. I've been using Angular for past 3 years now, and apart from the mess with versions, I think it's the most complete and beautiful framework out there. I get that not all the people like Angular that much as me but 38% satisfaction (compared to 78% for preact and 88% for svelte for example) in my opinion is craziness.

Doesn’t the discovery of gluons and W/Z bosons kinda make Einsteins unified field theory…. Not a theory?…. The man was brilliant but, didn’t really believe in quantum mechanics… Only reason he would of been wrong in my opinion…. And I already thought he was right.10

(sort of rant but not totally)
so I am using Directus for headless cms and I'm always looking around for other options such as Contentful, but the problem with Contentful is that it is hella expensive in my opinion (249$/month at least after you exceed the free tier with limited capabilities)
So the real question is, do you guys know of any other Headless CMS? -
I would like to ask you guys (and girls) for your opinion on finding a job. I made a website chagaifriedlander.cf and I'll post my resume in the comments.
I'm just finishing studying computer science and I'd love program something for Android, but I'm also open for anything else. My favourite place would be Switzerland but I'm open to working anywhere. I would like to work in a team at the beginning because a I need to gain some experience and b I just don't like working alone to much.5 -
