Frontend-developer's day is like:
*moving element by 0.0001px to right*:
- *10 new pages appeared*
- *text suddenly disappeared*
- *pictures pierced bottom of page*
- *window.alert("Kill me")*
- *it's night outside the window, but you totally sure a minute ago was a noon*
*moving element back*:
- *no pictures*
- *no text*
- *no moon*
- *10 blank pages*
- *only darkness left in this world...
...and this fcking element, yeah*19 -
Once a friend asked me to teach programming to him so I started with basics and hello world. Run the code and printed "hello world" on command line. Then my friend opened a new command prompt typed hello world and told me he can write that without all of the bs and that was the end.7

Fun fact: Michael Widenius named "MySQL" after his daughter My. When MySQL was acquired by sun, he decided to start a new open source database, "MariaDB", named after his second daughter Maria.
This guy is (partially) responsible for two of the largest databasesystems in the world.
Imagine his daughters apply for a database engineering job one day. During application process: "One of the largest databases in the world was named after me..." 😂19 -

When learning a new language replace "Hello world" with "Hello darkness my old friend". Sounds more appropriate.4

Had to enter the Apple world when joining the new job.
Used a good hour locating curly brackets, pipe and tilde on that cryptic keyboard.
User-friendly my ass.14 -
The code you write is your child.
When it misbehaves(bugs) you disciplines(fixes) it.
You are ecstatic when it achieve something(into production).
You want them to be at par with the world(adapting to new libraries).
So, to all the developers out there happy father's day.6 -
Hello world! I'm new here. Discovered devRant randomly and I'm so happy I did 😊 Problem is, I can't seem to get any work done now that I'm reading rants all day long 🙃10

Today I welcome a new bot into our little world.
Have you ever had the need to write "did you google it" before?
@lmgtfy will turn your comment into a lmgtfy search.
Just tag @lmgtfy and any text afterwards will be added to a search term. (Excluding emojis - because reasons)75 -
10am: meeting invite for 9:30pm my time.
*decline with comment: can’t attend*
9:40pm: email, “is anyone from engineering going to attend?”

10:05pm: email, ok the results of the call were X, Y and Z. But we’ve been asked to supply architecture diagrams (which don’t exist). Can we do this today?

10:45pm: email, guys this is urgent can we do this ASAP!

It's more than a story bear with me.
Open source world is big enough to scare a beginner like me, which happened when I started with my first contribution in the year 2015. So many platforms, lot of organisations, freaking images of coding languages, pull request, issues and bugs- these all were enough to freak me out.
The only thing which motivated me to stay and know about the open source technology was to develop my first program using python. I was in great difficulty as when I started writing my program I was stuck after almost every two to three stages of compilation, so I needed guidance. I started my search on Github by creating my repository, pushing my code and following developers. I was amazed to see such a good response from people around me, not only they helped me to debug and fix the issue but they also helped me to understand and build my program from a new perspective. Daily discussions and communication, new issue build up and solving them by the traditional way of GUI further motivated me to learn the Git using the command line tool.
I still remember the year I worked on a repo using the command line tool, it was amazing. Within months or few, the fear of open source tools, community, interaction all just flew away. With this rant I will like to suggest all the beginners and open source enthusiast to just step a foot ahead and ask openly to the world- "I need help" and believe me you will be showered with information and help from all the world.
Happy contribution.8 -
So today a colleague totally new to the linux world was installing different distros to try and toy with, he knew I have linux on my laptop and asked what distro.
Apparently he couldn't get Manjaro working so asked if I could suggest him another ... obviously for the lols I recommended Arch ...
Some time later, I checked on him and he was still in the console of the live usb, he told me, he was waiting for the gui to load for the past half an hour ...
... I think he hates me now5 -
When I'm proud of the new function I invented and have no clue how anybody will get a use of it...
The world is just not ready for this2 -
Client: We want an application such that our users can view the 3D rendering of the building we are constructing for them
PM: That's quite easy, we'll get it done
Client: Oh, and the output should be a PDF document, such that they can view the 3D rendering on a PDF reader on the go
PM: That's not a problem, it'll be done
--Right back at the office--
PM: Hey guys, this is our new project....(rants on)
Lead Dev: (in a world of indescribable world) You mean you agreed to that? That's impossible
PM: Just get it done
I wish non coding PM's asked their devs before agreeing to some alien like features4 -

Hello devRant,
I'm new in your community. Okay, not completely new because I try to introduce me in the community and now I think, I know how devRant works and what I could do here.
But who I am?
I'm David from Germany. I'm a hobby developer. I develop lots of stuff, Alexa Skills, Google Actions, Mobile Application for Android and Websites. I'm in a one team member "team"🤣. I develop the background and I "try"😉 to develop the foreground. I develop since 6-7 years and I start with HTML (I know it's not a programming language) but next to HTML I learned CSS. Now, I could programm in CSS, JS, PHP, MySQL, JAVA, C++, PHYTON and I hope I don't forget a language.
But the main question: Why I joined to the devRant community?
The main reason is that I want to see jokes meme and interesting topics. The secondary reason is that I hope I could learn English in a different way. I hope I'm not the worst English speaker/writer.26 -
Did you hear of the story of the fucked up data migration at the british bank TSB? People can't access their money for a week now. And people see the accounts of other bank custumers. The CEO had to call IBM for help.

Hello World!
I started reading things here on devRant some time ago but finally decided to create an account now
TL;DR; Hi. I'm new here.6 -
You know, sometimes I wish I had friends who knew how to code or new a bit about the programming world. Then I could show them my projects and they could help out of they wanted. I could also get them to properly criticize my designs and script. Instead of the ones that just scroll past your shit and say nothing at all, you know, people who would actually give a little bit of a shit. Sigh.4
-
4 step process.
1. Loud music on the way home
2. Vent to the wife. Because she listens and is awesome.
3. Kill stuff in games. ESO or any shooter.
4. Sleep.
After all that the next day is fresh and new and all is good and right in the world.4 -
Is it expected for a new arrival to post a 'Hello World'? Only I don't normally do what's expected. Actually, I don't normally do normal. Then again, I don't know what I am doing most of the time. Or where I am. Or who I am.32

Meanwhile I work 1,5years for a company which makes AutoCAD plugins. I have created a dozen of plugins now, some very complicated.
Yesterday I started on the simplest plugin, a tutorial for new colleagues. It literally prints "hello world" after giving a command.
Guess what... I can't get it to work 😖7 -
Difference n°538592 between developers and regular people:
"Do you listen music at work ? If so what app do you use ?
- (regular people) I don't / I use Spotify/Youtube.
- (me) I usually listen to my personal webradio server (running with icecast+liquidsoap on a little ubuntu DO droplet). Currently has a few funny jingles made by a friend and +3000 tracks (this number grows with time as I listen to new stuff), all crate-digged by myself for myself. Basically the the best radio in the whole world <3"20 -
Just got a new TV, 4K... it’s one of those smart ones, by Samsung.
Anyone want to explain what the fuck “McAfee Security for TV” is, and why the fuck it is necessary!?
What kind, of absolute waster madman goes “I know what I’ma do today, write a virus for a tv”!?
Take that shit elsewhere McAfee.
Now accepting any links to known Smart TV 0-days and attacks...
And I had to sign in to 5 different fucking accounts to get to the fucking tv.

There are many ways of development...
Test Driven Development.
Behaviour Driven Development.
Acceptance-Test Driven Development.
YOLO Driven Development.
But nothing in this world is so frustrating as...
Buzzword Driven Development.
As soon as your managers spot a new technology, it needs to be integrated...

Congratulations? For fucking what. So you built a wix website. Now youre a web developer and the whole world knows it, my services aren't needed anymore.
Congratulations you bypassed half a decade in 50 hours a week of coding, then you have the bone and fucking marrow of emailing me because your like buttons are causing users to create a new instagran account. Good one kid.3 -
Hey, guys!
I'm new here and I want to introduce myself and meet you too.
My name is Mariana, I'm 21 years old and I live in Brasilia, capital of Brazil.
I'm a beginer in the world of development and I joined on this community to know more about this world. I am currently studying js, react and react native, but I am passionate about database, in the future I want to work with data science.
And you? Feel free to introduce yourself too! :)17 -
Me: *submits design document to manager, who sends it to client for review*
Client: "everything is good, except one line here mentions a function that has since been removed" *send email to manager*
Manager: Correct this one line *sends email to me*
Me: uh, ok *deletes line, sends updated document in new email*
Is there any reason in the world the client OR manager couldn't have corrected the line and moved on?
Did we need to get two more people involved and send 3 more emails?4 -
Dear recruiters and so called "startups".
If you want to attract me by starting with the phrase: "Mobile lead role in Startup" and you go on like...
"We are a startup with offices in Shanghai, Hongkong, Vancouver, San Francisco, New York,... "
or
"We are a startup and also the 6th biggest phone network in the world... "
No thanks, enjoy your startup themed cubicles and fuck off!5 -

I'm just C# boy, born and raised in a .Net world ... Today I started some stuff with JavaScript, downloaded the JavaScript standard extension for using in Vs code... It made me do things...it made indent each new line by 2 spaces! Not 4 or a tab but 2! And then what really took the fucking biscuit, it said I couldn't end my statements with semi colons! I need a strong cup of tea and a sit after that shit. How is that at all useful to anyone!? It just made it make less sense!!!!10

Worst: I lost development contract - probably due to covid - after 4 years of work. I got email when I was at bank seconds before signing mortgage for my first apartment.
I signed it anyways as a technically unemployed person without income looking at the world collapsing.
Best: I gained new contract with 40% money raise. Fuck yeah ! -
So I thought it would be cool to build UI/Screens for Flutter apps and put them out for the world to use. People are already using my designs in their apps and it just feels amazing. I am continuously adding new screens and widgets as and when I get time.

So I just opened the node_modules folder of a blank angular app...

Colleges aren't teaching enough practical applications of why we devs do what we do. Get students engaged with small business! Get them to think about how they apply what they learn to the real world!! We need creative new ideas from developers that think outside the damn book!2

In the next 40 years devRant will be non-existential because developers wont be there anymore, you know why?

If you are teaching a newbie HTML and basic JS using ES6/ES2015 features, the "Hello World" app probably would be:
<!-- index.html -->
<html>
<body>
<div id='container'>
<h2> Enter a Name and Hit The Button</h2>
<input id='name'>
<button id='change-name'>Say Hello</button>
<h3 id='name-display'></h3>
</div>
<script type='module' src="./index.js"></script>
</body>
</html>
//index.js
import {sayHello} from './hello.js';
let displayArea = document.getElementById('name-display');
let input = document.getElementById('name');
let button = document.getElementById('change-name');
button.addEventListener('click', () => {
//displayArea.innerHTML = "Hello World"
displayArea.innerHTML = sayHello(input.value);
});
//hello.js
export const sayHello = (name='World') => {
return `Hello ${name}`;
};

Building an amazingly complex system from scratch in Rust means 2 things to me...
1. Really cool tech with great syntax to learn
2. My value as a developer will be going up a lot. In terms of the salary expectations
I really love when I get to learn a new technology, not for a project or course, but to build really cool real-world applications.
That’s what drives me!5 -
I am fucking sick of everything.
This week was an epitome of shit, hatred, frustration and human filth.
At 16 o clock on friday, as I was in the final planning, someone decided to quit and made this week in its last hours a full fucked nightmare.
Maybe I run away this weekend, get a new identity or become a fucking street hobo, dunno.
I think my patience has run out.
Fuck you. Fuck the world. Fuck everything.
Good night.2 -
I'm honestly so happy and grateful to be in the world of web development. It's an amazing space to be in when you enjoy solving problems.
Consistently fast evolving and ever changing technologies means new and exciting problems are endless!
But I swear to all that is motherfucking holy, if I have to keep solving exactly the same problems over and over because the place I work at won't let me provide permanent solutions to old problems... I'm going. To. Lose. My. Freaking. Mind6 -
Really wish the world was less volatile when it comes to opinions!
Commented on a video about fallout 3 being an important game and a tonne of people were bitching and insulting the creator because they think New Vegas is better...
I commented saying I prefer fallout 3 and instantly got bombarded with insults... Ugh
Hope none of my games will ever cause this shit -,-6 -
Fffuuuck you Nvidia, you worthless piece of shit company. There's a part of the world that doesn't use Windows. Grow the fuck up. Torvalds gesture makes complete sense when you get a new kickass laptop, load kickass fedora 25, but are unable to tap into it's graphic potential. You spend 2 days trying to install the fucking driver. The next day you decide to follow one blogpost instead of 2 and You're forced to reinstall fedora and the cycle repeats. The past 4 days have been painfully unproductive.11

I have been learning / developing JavaScript (nodejs and the whole world around it) and I have to say that I love JavaScript 😍 but I would like to learn something new. Something completely different from web-development. I also have some experience in Java / Python so also something different than that.
Any ideas? :)14 -
Spent the whole damn weekend trying to migrate from old pc xampp to clone of the vps by pushing pulling from github... It's a nightmare. Finally I gave up, installed xampp on the new pc as well, pulled all the garbage there and of course it didn't worked, same errors... The solution... some files were not pushed to github.. I really think about to move to some 3rd world country, and become tomato farmer instead.2

Recently got back into Blender to get those 3D modeling Skillz. Lemme tell you what those keybindings do NOT fucking stick in memory over long periods of time.
I felt like someone had detached all of my fingers, shuffled their order, and instructed me to type an essay. Not to mention the new UI, which I love for sure, but is unfamiliar to me.
Anyways, I've always wanted to make a multiplayer VR hangout sort of game set in Disney world so that's my unobtainable goal and reason for doing this.
Yay.9 -
Axioms of writing software for your own business

nobody in my team works at my location. they are all at different sites of the world.

So I log into a great new site with my development machine. 64G of RAM, and 2 hex core CPU's; GTX 1070 video, SSD, etc. 4K display screen. (Motherboard is 5 years old, not trying to brag, just give context). I regularly put 8 pages of text on the screen side by side. Split ergonomic keyboard.
It wants me to load a mobile app for "full access".
Yea, why look at the world with wide open eyes when you can view everything through a cardboard toilet paper tube and type with your thumbs???

While in the banking world, I had a project where I had to automate an import into a shit system called CRAWiz. The data had to come from multiple archaic loan systems with no API and tons of shit data.
After implementing, the shit data came to light. Instead of fixing shit data (and using their loan systems correctly), they decided to go back to digging through physical files and manually importing. They blamed CRAWiz and decided to go with a new system to import their shit data into. I warned them repeatedly that a new system would not fix the shit data but they couldn't accept it. I left at that point. 😂 -
Hello there,
I am new here and I have Quick Question for u guys,
Q: how can one become the best programmer in the world ?

Doesn't matter if you know a lot of programming languages. There is no greater satisfaction than when you write your first "hello world" in a new language.6

Aside from the world going to hell what's new?5 -
As I sit and stare at code, and then stare at the Bills I need to pay as the month starts. I began to think, what if I too was part something new in Tech. Everytime, I see people creating new Tech, getting noticed, I wish I was there on forefront.
Then it gradually dawns on me, "you are just here to make ends meet, survive in the corporate world. Why care about the world. Let it go as it is."
"A shitty life".3 -
How to write a proper Hello World program in Java:
public class ProperJavaProgram {
public static void main(String[] args) {

// Write the hello world file
List<String> lines = Arrays.asList(
"#include <stdio.h>",
"int main() {",
"printf(\"Hello World!\\n\");",
"return 0;",

);
Path file = Paths.get("awesome-program.c");
Files.write(file, lines, Charset.forName("UTF-8"));
// Execute the file
executeCommand("cc awesome-c-program.c -o awesome-executable");
executeCommand("./awesome-executable");
} catch (IOException e) {
System.out.println("You're screwed, just use Java and get over it. " + e);

Any other awesome references for that ?10 -
I've never been a frontend guy, I only could modify existing FE code and had some clues about how to write a hello-world using angular.
I've just refactored ~150 files in an Angular project, created half a dozen new modules and modularized lots of loose artefacts.
And after recompiling the project still works! And is now more maintainable!
I think I now can safely add "Angular" to my resume :)
P.S. Damn it, Angular is cool!!!9 -
There's something special about writing your first "Hello world!" in a new language, no matter how long you've been programming :)
So hello rust, let's see what the fuzz is all about...4 -
End of the world ?

- leave the working and high paying world
- build another startup from scratch
- jump into a very new and controversial industry
- fight against extreme misinformation and prejudice in the above industry
- build some amazing technology that I hope will actually help people
- finally, publicly be my real and genuine self
I am both very frightened and very excited.
Trending more and more toward excited every day.
Can you relate to that? Then let’s chat on the comments!8 -

Travelling and coding are such a great combination! You get to experience the world, see new things and pursue you passion!
Also the stress of programming just floats away. -
boss said: "we need create new version of our software. copypaste old version in new branch. so we will have dozens of versions and all of them online and working."
my question: "what if old bug will appear in all off 100500 branches? we will need fix all the versions of bug in different copies we have modified!"
boss said:"c'mon when we will get this problem then we will think about it. all the devs in world working on many versions. its easy."

Holy shit I had no idea we can use content: attr() in pseudo elements in css! It's a whole new world baby!2

Feels scary to purchase my first ever dedicated server. After two years using VPSs (and paying 5$ a month for that xD)
It feels scary and exciting to know they are somewhere in the world, setting up a new machine just for me! xD
- regardless of whether they are actually setting up a new machine or just starting a preinstalled machine, let me live the fantasy of being special here xD8 -
I can't remember the last time I had THIS MUCH FUN developing an Android app! 😳 Have a paper due, but learning RN is actually making this pet project a huge distraction! 😳 This is a whole new world of mobile development 😆, but what if another framework takes it's place 😵. But there's still people who know Angular, and that's widely used...right 😓 and moble dev has never been this easy, so maybe it'll stick around like Node...
who cares... I'M FUCKING LOVING React Native now!!! 😆random javascript newbie development reactjs thoughts awesomeness this is the future react native awesomeness overflow omfg4 -

I love the feeling of working on something new but
I hate ending up spending more time getting a workflow setup and chasing down random bugs or hacky fixes just to get something stable so I can start working!!!1 -
Dear friends,
New to dev's world... Need your support to sustain...In it.. 😀
Love to be a part of this ... Geek mythology...
Abbr dev's:: devil's 😘3 -
Have to so a presentation tomorrow about a non dev topic.
While googling stuff I randomly find that cool amazing lib or new tool. Watching a video about it and end up codeing a hello world with it because it's so cool !
3h later: oh wait what was that tab about I opened 3h ago. Fuck.
Anyone else knows ?1 -

I had just finished programmer school (Air Force Tech School), and was all set to wade into the world of C++ programming. Got to my first job, and they set my down at a VT220 terminal on a VAX 11/780 and said, "You are the new sys admin." Talk about disappointment. My first actual coding? I got to apply a software patch to a Gould SEL 67 that only had a Mod 40 TTY as an interface ... yes, pretty much a typewriter ... no terminal screen. I am so happy technology has advanced as much as it has.

I was just watching a web series on X: the generation that changed the world, and damn!! Those X-ers (people born b/w 1961-1981 ) have really made changes that disrupted the whole world! Comparing to them, i feel like we millennials haven't made anything *that* disruptive.
- calculators happened which evolved to computers and then began a crave for knowledge and technology
- Netscape gave a new use to computers
- Tim Berners lee ,napster disrupted the way of sharing data.
- Google changed the way of searching.
- Amazon gave the true business value to internet.
- The revolution of music , hip hop and television.
- ...
(And these are just the first 2 episodes!)
Btw what do we millennials bachieved? Tiktok, heartbreaks, and porn fetishes :/9 -
I'm giving a presentation on different text editors on Friday to the class I'm helping teach. I'm excited it's the beginning of the year and they're new our world and I get to show them and review 5 editors.
If you're curious the the 5 editors are
Notepad++
Sublime Text 3
VS Code
Atom
Brackets
No IDE they have no need for an IDE yet.11 -
Best way to learn something new?
You keep repeating it wrongly until you are blue in the face, the whole world has gone red and the sweet release of death sounds favorable to your current dilemma.
Then, if you are lucky, you get it right out of the many many failed attempts.
But, what you have learned is far greater than getting it right once. You've learned many ways not to do it again. -
Windows guy here, installing Ubuntu. Gonna see if I can get a Hello World going with this fancy new .Net Core.5

PHP is like the janitor in the school who has worked there for 40+ years and is liked by the authorities of the school. He has stood the test of time and has seen the highs and lows of life.
And the new gen-z kids, who don't even know how the world works/recently started exploring the world, hate that man for no reason except to look cool.
BTW, if you plan on commenting anything negative, just remember that the very platform you're using to do so, is built on PHP.4 -

So me being illiterate fuck in C++ and shit, I just broke a build of one of the biggest Autodesk's softwares for hundreds of people around the world and didn't realize it until around a day later (now) after feeling weird about those tens of new mails..
Weeeell, apparently 96.0 isn't float, heh:))))

I used to love my job, the guy that looked forward to mondays, there was always something new to learn, I was passionate about clean code and learning new languages like Elixir. As a software engineer I thought my occupation had a special significance in this world, I saw possibility and potential of creating something so impactful on the world that it would become my legacy.
Now after 5 years I’m realising that none of this stuff really matters to the world, software engineers aren’t special and it’s evident from our salaries how valuable we are compared to other professions in sales, medicine or law. My friend who works as in customer success management makes more than me.
While some of us will be in the lucky few whose work will change the world, most of us will just be another cog in the wheel, all that matters is how many product/features you ship out, nobody gives a shit about code quality, concurrency and architecture design other than us5 -
since i finally have a laptop i can actually get away with doing mobile development... what would you guys, gals tell someone new to the whole Android dev world to use?
Java or Kotlin?
dont worry about my background, i usually just deep dive into anything new, but want to see what the general devRantsis is on the topic.
ive made it this far so... :D17 -
The code will not:
* bad-mouth
* lie
* let down
* abuse
* cheat
* bully
* kill
* run away
The code brings people together no matter if someone has the brain power of protozoa or is the next Euclid. The code is pure with a passive buff to become as perfect as possible. It's the new math for the future world. The code is love, the code is life.
That's why I love (to) code. And you?2 -
I hope that in the future we will have a different way to learn new languages than creating a 'hello world!" object 😂8

This articles are what is wrong with developers. They build these stereotypes for us.

Recently, I was hired by another company. It's a huge change for me and my career, so I'm looking forward for start in my new position.
By then, in my current company I just started a high-prioritary-super-important project for the company. So, I asked to my new company some extra time before join them in order to finish some stuff on that project and to make a good project transfer.
Today, halfway throught that extra time, boss anunced me that super critical project is no prioritay anymore due bussines decisions, so only we have to do is usual tasks (which my junior coworker can do without me).
I feel like newbie in the world of work.3 -
Past two years when I was in 7th grade, my computer teacher taught us the first programming language ie Python. At first, I just copied the syntax in my copy, and in the evening, I searched for it on YT
This introduced me to a new world of programming and I started learning it further3 -

There is now a new subfield in web3 called DeSci which is decentralized science of studying memecoins and how to go from rags to riches just like one guy bought a shitcoin for $27 and now he cashed out $8m a few days ago
Web3 is absolute joker clown world dystopian shithole where only the rich get richer by taking the money from poor and middle class.
But if you think about it this is exactly how the whole web2 even works! The whole world works exactly like this and web3 has just helped us amplify the gruesome truth of reality6 -
So I'm soley a Java developer, and I got the task of making a server so I was like what a great time to learn C++ or something. With no prior knowledge of what c++ looks like I make a new project and open the damn template to be confused asf on where to start. I lookup some hello world tutorials and now I'm even more confused. Thanks C++13

as a follow-up to @green-portals zombie apokalypse question.
apokalypse happened, most of humankind faded, the global economy, logistics and infrastructure collapsed, nature however seems to be okay with it. there's no electrical power available (let's say nuclear plants are fine nevertheless)
you're one of the survivors living in the post-apokalypse era, finding yourself in a settlement where technology level has fallen back to medieval times (people lack knowledge AND material supplies). The outside world is dangerous, due to human raiders and extremely violent groupings, as well as environmental hazards. what do you do for a living?
is there a place for a software engineer in this new medieval world?12 -
A bunch of people who know a bunch of frameworks but lack intrinsic understanding CS, therefore bringing the degeneration of overall quality.
This ultimately leads to:
1- shitty dev jobs (the future blue-collar job, always in risk to be automated)
OR
2- super high-end dev jobs (most likely AI engineering, devops, data science)
As generations pass, this shapes out a whole new world economy.2 -

Day #1: You start working on something new, you feel stupid because you don't know anything.
Day #2: You learned the basic concepts. Start feeling so well.
Day #3-9...: Start feeling like you know everything.
Day #?: You start something new, you feel like the last piece of shit un the world.

I'm new in the programming world; when I need to learn something new I generally look at documentation and articles to get an understanding of the basics.
Then, if it's still interesting to me, I just try it out.
Sometimes I might ask a fellow more experienced programmer or a teacher to explain it to me.1 -

No desire to work hard or learn new coding stuff. This world is so messed up now that I have a difficult time caring about anything anymore. I spend a lot of time browsing for and posting anti-wokeness and pro-libertarian memes and watching the world burn down around me under the illusion that it’s being “saved” and “improved” by monopolistic authoritarian governments and technocracy. All that’s really happening is a handful of really powerful people are pissing on our heads and telling us it’s raining. Invest in umbrella manufacturers.16

Joined a new project. The codebase is… Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter, is there ANY decent project in vue which has an hint of readibility in this damn world?
Every single time anyone talks about vue I roll my eyes “no I swear we managed it well!” 600 lines of code components. Is there even a good way to structure it for big apps?9 -
To be fair, I don't have my degree yet (just two more semesters...) but I'm working as a dev second year now and studying is really nothing compared to real-world experience. Yeah, I know I haven't said nothing new.1

Just wondering what did I miss.
I missed this place a lot. My poor netbook from last post is on its final few moments. Got new hardware, finally. Now, I'm learning more and more.

Went on this 2 day business show...
Next to me a 100 inch tv... 4k quite awesome jittery video at points ? Codec or cable is wrong...
What was on the right of my stand ... To the cake.
"How to make money online"
He proceeded to state things like I now have 20mill my dream car etc ...
*Me trying not to laugh\be disgusted*
His power point ... Well a 10 year old can do better looks built in 1995
People were buying into it ! How the fuck does someone who has apparently 20mill give such a shit design to people and they listen...
I seriously wanted to go on and say... Don't listen to this fraud this, piece of shit snake oil salesmen.
But I didn't... And.. I regret it. On the bright side ... My stand had the shortest setup in the whole place bet by far the best websites! -
For the past week I've been rewriting an application with just pure php, html, js and css (with a sprinkle of bootstrap), and I gotta say that in this new modern world of frameworks & CMSs, it feels great building a "problem solving" application with nothing but my bare hands!4

Okay I'm back to Dev Rant tho it still looks new and confusing sometimes, maybe because I'm new to programming world. Well I need some type of advice , I like web development, I started learning PHP (I know it an old language but it all I can help myself with, by learning). Is there any thing I'm missing? Any link on improving my skills ?
I will be glad to learn a lot from the senior developers on here . I really want to go wide into programming I'm ready for the challenges because I know the path isn't always easy!!
Thanks in advance10 -
I don't hate ubuntu but I really feel that deepin is what ubuntu should have been.
When I was new to the linux world (maybe I am a new still), whenever I used to ask someone about linux Os, they used to tell me to install ubuntu.
But the ui was not that appealing. Deepin is what I should have installed and I would have ditched windows long ago. I know there are many distros, maybe better than deepin but deepin looks and feels good and is easy to use. The deepin store is awesome.

I was today years old when I created my first node.js Hello World app. I managed to add some basic routing with express.js, managed to read a mysql table and some JSON. I'm starting to 'get' the node.js environment. Shows you're never too old to learn something new.3

Person1: Can I follow you home?
Person2: That is creepy...1 -
The old company I was working at, was absolutely treating their new employees as shit. Everything was handled by the old timers who "knew how the world worked" (to those, TDD was useless, because as proven by this company only, it was a waste of time).
Everything that the new employees or "young talent" came up with, had to be talked through in a senior group, without the young talent. Never got anywhere, their software was absolute garbage (yet worked by sheer magic!!!!)
Today I learned that a former coworked had hos LinkedIn account say "[company]: waste of time."
And before you say "No company you work for, is a waste of time, as a software dev." i say, working for this company made you a worse developer. By. The. Fucking. Day.1 -
Electronic companies nowadays are no different than ranchers that force their slaves to earn money to buy new stuff cause people can’t repair old electronics or fix software bugs cause it’s not theirs or it’s not maintained and source code is not existent.
Damn you software and hardware corporations.
You tell everyone that you care about environment, yet you don’t fucking support your software and hardware as long as people use it. When you stop support you don’t make everything open source but keep it on your private repositories as intellectual property and fuck your clients.
Literally all electronics and software should be mandatory made open source to the people who purchased product so they can use it as long as they want not as long as corporate assholes want. This is insane law that is splitting our world and making it burn. If I could fix my laptop in nearby shop I wouldn’t have to purchase new one.
If it won’t change we will end up with <10 corporations that would rule world economy, everyone who will work for those corporations will be rich and happy and everyone else will be poor and unhappy . Mind me if this is not already happening and this planet slowly becomes Elysium movie nightmare.
Stop buying new stuff you stupid people cause this make things worse.
If it won’t change in 10 or so years there will be connected to cloud robots all over the world guarding us and some dick shit rich John Conor kid will hack them to exterminate humans by executing order 66. After that there will be big power outage that will put us into the role of battery and we would be closed in the barrel full of pink shit connected to matrix.
Get me out of here you asshole.1 -
Have you ever written a very complicated code to look like a professional programmer??
For example:hello world app in c++
#include <iostream>
using namespace std;
int main(int argv, char argc)
{
char vhWnd[] = new char[13];
struct dataentry
{
string txt;
float vex = 0.2345234;
};
vhWnd[1] = 'e';
vhWnd[4] = 'o';
vhWnd[3] = 'l';
vhWnd[2] = 'l';
vhWnd[7] = 'o';
vhWnd[5] = ' ';
vhWnd[6] = 'W';
vhWnd[9] = 'l';
vhWnd[8] = 'r';
vhWnd[13] = '\0';
vhWnd[10] = 'd';
vhWnd[12] = '!';
vhWnd[11] = ' ';
vhWnd[0] = 'H';
for ( int i = 0, i=13, i++)
{
nhttp << vhWnd[i];
}
return 85037593;
}19 -

In this new World of Microservices Architecture, I fail to understand the monolithic application. My context being for interviews. They keep asking about the old ways. What patterns were used and security situation. How do you tackle that when I did not get a chance to work on old monoliths. But

So.. currently working on updating some hybrid mobile apps. Major updates, so requires drastic measures..
anyway, over in my Nx workspace now, I generate a new Angular app, add Capacitor and generate a new Android project.
Then when I open my new project in Android Studio, it recommends updating AGP from 8.0.0 to 8.1.1.
Waiting for the new packages to download, AS shows an orange warning message popup that reads "sync is taking an unusually long time", or something like that.
Software development from a third world country sucks donkey dick. Because I've "only" got a 20Mbps connection. 🤔5 -
unlimited time is not the only problem. During that time I'd get hungry, cold and tired -- I need to afford to buy food, have a home with roof and warmth. So with unlimited time, I'll also need unlimited funds.
And if I had unlimited funds I'd spend most of my time AFK: buying a house, making it pretty, setting up my own lab and a solar+wind powerplant, recruiting some folks to finish my project for me. Then travel all around the world, while my code monkeys are busy making me famous for introducing new tech to the world - so new, that it'll change the way we live, that it'll change our communication, interaction and other habits. And then I'll be ready for the EternalLife underground project, where another set of teams of bio-monkeys will be busy making my consciousness alive after my body wears out.
If only I had all those funds...
Care to chip in? -
Start with simple projects then keep improving it until you reach the depth level that you want.
I used to learn a new language/technology every month, I did that all this year until now, I learned 3 new languages, 2 new databases, 1 new paradigm, so many frameworks and methodologies and design patterns applying in real world projects ! -
How can we go to a new world?
No need death.
Just read a fantasy book
Or learn new programming language.
For example, if you're a php Dev, learn c#, Java or c++.
Believe me, it's a new world.2 -
Learning Philosophy.
It is the most important thing for anyone to do to.
Everyone has one either implicit or explicit.
Learning metaphysics, and then more specifically epistemology has greatly increased my ability to process new information and build better models of the world around me. -
btw I made an instagram account dedicated for my tangram designs ( I do a new one each day for the gf to guess ( w/o the weekends 4 her ) and tought I might as well share them with the not so big world ).
Almost all of them are made by me ( I do copy some from the net if I got lazy or forget to make a new one ( I do them the previous day ) ) so hopefully some of them are not on the net already
If you are interested to check it out : your_daily_dose_of_tangram ( and yeah, I know... but we all do it to some extend either way ;) )1 -

Happy Friggin New Years to all the Devs in the world !!! :D may this year be filled with lots of code and happiness :)
-
All that I have been ranting about this year are first world problems. Not only because politics is the only taboo on devrant, but also because I have been making too much compromise again.
It seems that most of the money is paid in projects for industrial companies, marketing, and useless products. So I ended up doing only some work for impact projects and ecological startups, taking time to learn new technology, and otherwise waste my potential to make a change by doing web development for well paying companies.
Still better than the years before, when I was an employee. Corporate culture sucks, at least it seems so at most companies in Germany and probably also America and even more so in other countries?! As a freelancer, at least I have the choice not to agree to any offer. And I did say no to many offers this year.
But still ...
New year resolution: prioritize customers with a purpose to make the world a better place. Make less compromise. Stop complaining about bullshit tech and just get things done instead.4 -
Im new here. Im from Indonesia, the country that if you can write hello world, you're a programmer1

Starting a project in work learning some new tech. After a brief introduction to the tech, the lead dev can't wait to tell us about how we need to coordinate our daily standups with another team in a different part of the world.
Honestly, I'd rather stand up in front of a firing squad. -
Today I started a new study. It's a study focussed on all kinds of technologies. AR, VR, Illustration, photo, video, motion capture & so much much more.
We immediately got an assignment to prepare a presentation about a skill we already have. They chose me to go first.
Guess what: I'm gonna learn my classmates JavaScript tomorrow 😏 -
Hello World! I'm new here. Hey guys. What are you guys working on right now? Unless you're just staring at a wall or playing video games that's fine too.9

How do smart (and, I presume, well-educated) people get an idea like "Oh, I know what this world needs, another video where someone scientifically disproves a story from the Bible" or "I should commemorate the new year by telling everyone how insignificant this day is for the universe"? How does someone spend years traveling the world, giving speeches about science, teaching curious people about physics, history, mathematics, chemistry, the space, etc., and then figure that the next thing they should share from their impressive knowledge is an edgy video disproving some old story or tradition?24 -
That person on here that created an enterprise hello world project, i think i have a new challenge for you:

"Designers tend to overvalue differentiation and originality. We are taught this in design school. The best solutions are created ex nihilo, break new ground, resemble nothing else in the world. Everyone wants to stand out, or else what’s the point? But this isn’t true. Most people don’t want to stand out. They want to fit in. More precisely, they want to fit in with the people they like, or want to be like." - Michael Bierut

Hello world!!
Can anyone help me with new ideas for graduation projects?? );
Asp.net(C#), android apps or unity games
Help please8 -
Some of you might appreciate this, thought I'd share.
I'm currently on the board for a new school, and one of the choices we've made is to require a basic software programming class (most likely python) in middle school or jr high.
As a board, we've decided that it serves a couple great purposes: teach critical thinking and understanding (even a little bit) how software is written, since that's the axis of the world.4 -
Here is my problem. The team I'm on has developers from other areas that were "put" into a new team. Two use "structured programming" but the requirements make me think we need "domain driven design". How in the world can I get them to evolve into another mindset while still meeting the deadline?1

As a newbie dev, I'm looking for partners to work together. You know I feel like unmotivated right now for some unknown reasons. So I thought of changing the pace by meeting with some new people who feel the same. By working on some not-real-world-project or silly ideas together, we can learn how to work in collaboration. We can also share some new ideas together!1

Hi guys! I'm new here, it seems fantastic!
Any of you is a front-end enthusiast that want to learn about UI & UX design? I'm a student, I don't know about work world. Is someone out there works as front-end dev and designer? Is it possible?
It seems developers are descriminated about graphic design. What do you think?2 -
Create new possibilities in the digital world, moving "everything" into the digital world, creating new solutions as a service. A more connected world. Find a problem even though it is small and make it as a service, changing lives for the better.

I try to wake up early, do some productive things, try my hands on different stuffs in life, learn a new skill, switch to a new career field, become famous and change the world... but these damned bug fixes make me stay up at nights and so goes the cycle of my life.😑

so my mom said that if i try to live away from her, she will not be able to live life normally. if she gets even a false news about me or related to me, she will have a heart attack/ commit suicide.
hello new world. I am just a visitor to you and your opportunities of happiness, i will be going away to my mom's lap after this to remain sad, useless poor and unhappy10 -
So, next monday I will be starting a new project in my company, the very first I have to manage as a sort of project owner in addition to my usual develer rolem. I will be asked to manage the relationship with the customer and all' the details, issues et cetera. Well, I dont know if I am ready and I tought to ask here some advices. So, what do you experienced developers suggest to a fresh meat? (2 years experience pro it world)

I'm very new to the business world, this is my first freelance project, a website with articles, editable profile pages and a calendar. I can't say no to the customer so the scope grew a bit too fat. I'm moving to England and starting university next week, and the project is going to be transferred to some guy, supposedly for maintenance, but it's not even close to complete. I feel like shit for failing them and especially I feel bad for the poor guy after me.2

Option #1 when installing new software: "Install database and web server on same server (typical)" ... Typical!? What kind of world are we living in here?
-
I like the new WhatsApp!!
There I said it.
Why?
- Snapchat was practically useless piece of crap for me. No one that matters to me used it. That app is a data hog and battery killer.
- Meanwhile, What'sapp cared enough to be datafriendly to those in developing world. Like, enabling video playing while it's downloading.
- Whatsapp is not a data hog or battery killer.
- Snapchat sucks shit unlessn on ios.
- I hate Facebook because if it's spam and i stopped using it. With new WhatsApp update, I'm less likely to miss out on what is happening with people i actually know. I know facebook owns WhatsApp, but it doesn't really matter.
- No stupid discover ads or promos like in snapchat -
I have decided that massive natural selection events are a thing with humans. When resources appear to be getting low a group of people will prepare and wipe out a large portion of consumers. The most straight forward way is to create a crisis and then offer the "only" solution. Make that solution a weapon and you are done. The masses gladly accept the solution. At all times appear benevolent. Silence dissenting voices swiftly. Make the dissenters look like nutters and publicly humiliate them and apply labels to them. Labels are effective because it creates pariahs. People like to not be singled out and called names.
What do you end up with? People who distrust government and the institutions. I don't know how this benefits the orchestrators (how to spell) of the genocide. Perhaps if the numbers are small enough they can just be rounded up and killed by force rather than coercion.
I get the feeling this approach has been used in the past. Like it has been at least tested on smaller scales. Maybe even on past civilizations. Did we learn to do this from space visitors? I wonder.
2021 has certainly been an interesting year. I used to think people were just stupid. This year has confirmed that for me. But I am not sure stupid is the right word. They are certainly book smart. Maybe naive is a better word. I pray and hope 2022 turns out better for people. Maybe they start seeing signs they have been lied to by people they trust. Maybe not. When you are in the matrix it is hard to see through the facade. The matrix feels very real, until it doesn't.

Have recently delved into the world of js. And i must say its really refreshing. Whenever i start up a new project, i hit the ground running. Everything from node to react has been a fun experience.
This might be because i dont try to follow any principles. I just create and refactor
This doesnt take Anything from the other languages i work in. I just like how it ended up being so to the point. And as i mentioned, i might be doing everything wrong 😜 -
That moment when you find out stuff like letmegooglethat.com or foaas.com exists... and then think of the countless ocations you had to use them... and the ones to come...2

Two days left until I finally start my first job in IT. Have had an adventurous journey through the mechanical and electronical world throughout my education, but I think, I will finally arrive, when I start this new challenge.1 -
Started developing an interest in programming after creating warcraft 3 maps using the world editor. I still remember those days where I used the gui trigger editor, where I don't even know the difference between local and global variables, preventing memory leaks by using leak check and etc. Creating new skills using triggers was so exciting. Then I discovered JASS, but I didn't really learn or use much about it. Now I'm working in Unity3D and it is awesome!2

I resigned from my job, and now there are 6 weeks left at my old desk, until I can leave and jump into a new world.
Now, I have done all points on my checklist/todo-list and I'am now surfing the web all day long.
Any suggestions for websites to learn something / interessting reads?5 -
1. I want to know how many JS frameworks will the world have
2. Will I stop drinking alcohol one day?
3. Will programmers create robots to conquer a new world?1 -
Got in a great company wherein I will be transformed from php to mean/mern stack. Improvise adapt overcome.
Will apply php best practices in the JS world.
After mean/mern, study react native or flutter. I like flutter but in my company there are only react native projects. Hhmm maybe because flutter is just new. Exciting future indeed 💪8 -
Hey-a. Started a new organization to bring better software to the world that will follow DRY, KISS and SOLID principles as much as possible. Using Golang as the main language for evertything including W3 stacks replacement. Check it out on my GitHub.2

Found a new terraform course and started learning terraform. Course is 7 hours long. The course is now 8 days old. I started following it on day 3 when it came out and ive only passed through 1h 20min for these 5 days. What the fuck? I thought terraform is gonna be easy and quick to learn. This feels like im learning an entirely new fucking language. A new fucking realm of SWE world. Shit takes up so much time. And now I'm just waiting for someone to come here and trashtalk terraform! Any tech stack i choose to learn, someone always comes here to write how it's shit! Go ahead tell me why terraform is shit10

Started out with C++ when I was 17. Being passionate about programming, loved to learn and explore more of the coding and programming world.
Reached out to the books for different languages such as Java, Python, PHP, etc.
Enjoyed learning anything that I came across.
My initial stages as a programmer, relied on books and video tutorials.
Now, relying upon documentation and other people's source code examples.
You know you can call yourself a developer, when you know how to use a particular language to develop applications that solve real world problems and perform tasks.
Now whenever I start out on a new language, I begin straight away with frameworks, hoping that I can grasp the syntax in parallel. -
One where my team has creative freedom, a positive impact on the world, and something new to learn every day.4

Hey guys, I'm looking for some feedback for a new website I launched socialfeedapi.com. It provides quick and easy API access to any Instagram media feed (for any public username or hashtag). Is this something that you guys think will be useful in the dev world? Is it just me, or has anyone here tried to gain access to an Instagram feed and was frustrated in doing so? Thanks in advance!7

I have for a very long time wondered about, what do people do when using git and databases? If I locally add new columns to the db, how in the world would you easily make the change in production?
Do I really have to manually do it or take the time to make scripts for it?2 -
I haven't coded a new project in a long time. I want to build something, show it to the world and hope people use it. I love webapps as I'm pretty experienced in this, and have a huge interest for smart homes, internet of things, twilio, innovative payments and more. What could my MVP be?
-
I have been using CakePHP 1.3 and 2.x fore some years. I built two custom platforms on them that we used for almost every project at work, and also some of my freelance ones.
We've built all kind of stuff, from basic CMS to large scale CRM/ERP systems, and it held it's own!
But now I wanna build another one! :D
I wanna build a platform on CakePHP 3.x fore sume time at work, but the constant flow of projects leaves little time for this.
And I am not talking about the shitty stuff like the sorry attempts you can find oh GitHub right now, that I never even managed to use once for a real project (I really tired!), I am talking about a real platform, for real world projects, with a real world interface, and real world functionallity, for real world use cases!
I was thinking to start an open source project, but I never managed one so I have some concerns...
Like it will not get any contributors and I will eventually do it on my own anyway, or like it WILL get traction and I will not be able to manage the project, or the community.
I am the head of the dev dept at work, but open source seems like a whole new ball game for me...
Anyway, what do you people think? Would you work on something like that? Would you use it? Should I create a GitHub project and add a collab? Or is it doomed already? -
Yesterday 2 hours meeting about how to keep functional a Delphi6 software with a 2.5 firebird.
Today the HEAD of our WORLD tell us he is going to buy a new software and trash the Delphi6 one...
So why did you organized the meeting HEAD?3 -
Well, it doesn't necessarily affect my work, but apparently E3 2020 was cancelled because of fucking covid-19, which does affect my happiness to some extent. It really may be the end of the world as we know it without new games to get hyped about:

Is it okay to feed your pet dog the scraps left over from eating dog?
I also pointed out to a coworker that New York has huge rats. I then said: "street steak".
The response was: "Why?!"2 -

SAD END😭😭
The world of cinema is in mourning as the actor Jason Statham, who plays Frank Martin in the film "the transporter" was shot in his home in New York by thieves who broke into his home.
He wanted to stand against them to protect his family but the thugs were right about him.
He was shot 4 bullets one in the head three in the chest 😭
This all happened around 2:18 am in a movie I watched last night.
SAD END🙄🤫8 -

This place has fucking ducks everywhere. Duck is the new Cat here.
Why? What the fuck! If we want cuteness we should have images of http://rethinkrobotics.com/intera/ here. This cuteness will take over the world one day.
Probably, that's why! We'd all be sitting ducks. That's what this duck trend is signifying. Ah! I might see it now.
But, still! Fuck you duck 🦆!2 -
There are two kinds of people in this world. The ones who've listened "Tower 4" podcast and the ones who don't have. It's too cool. But just listened last episode, have to wait a month for new one. Six are available now.
Tower 4 is just a story, but it's very well made. It's about a guy that becomes firewatch living in tower 4 and only has the girl in tower 3 to talk to. Much nice dialogue. There exists a game, much like it.
What are other nice story podcasts?6 -
