Teaching 7-8 year olds the basics of web design. We're we're playing with CSS and changing colours of block elements and text. One girl put up her hand, completely confused as to why it wasn't working. Her code:
Section {
Background-color: rainbow;
}
Oh the wonderful mind of children26 -
Dear Apple.
Charging $99 for a one-year developer account is bullshit.
Best regards,
Me and every other tech-student on this planet.34 -
Year 2013
- Trying this thing called Bitcoin
- Setup wallet in spare USB drive
- Buy 0.5 BTC (couldn’t afford more)
- Forgot about it
Year 2016
- Remembered I had bought BTC
- Looking like crazy for my USB drive
- Found it!
- Insert it into PC
- only one file in it
- essay_blah_blah_<sisters name>.doc
- poof, gone for ever14 -
My whole interview was like:
"Do you want a beer or water?"
Apparently beer was the right answer, I'm working now since one year at the company6 -
At work today.
Collegue: hey, if you continue like this, you'll be just like me in a year or so!
Me: as, so completely fucked up?
Boss: hahaha rekt!
C: okay gotta give you that one 🤣
Love those random moments :)2 -
I started in 2015 at my current job. The first contract was for a year, very normal in the Netherlands. Also, I had only 6 months of professional experience with programming.
I already knew that I would replace an older colleague who's going to retire and I would get some of his responsibilities.
One year later (6 months ago) I had an evaluation with my boss. He told me he was proud I learned everything so quick and offered me a permanent position and wanted me to take over one of the major products we sell. Even more, he wanted me to decide how to change the framework since it's over 20years old. (Multiple languages combined)
I am currently working on a new design and UX as well, which I presented last year. The love it.
I've never felt so appreciated and valued before.13 -
Teacher: "Whats that key thingy?"
Class: "You mean the keyboard?"
Teacher: "Yes, that one!"
I shit you not, she was my IT educator for a year.
Send help.5 -
No one dare deploy anything the week before Christmas - no fucking way I'm writing a hotfix under the Christmas tree again this year
-
Recruiter: "Do you have at least 5 years of experience with Angular?"
Me: "No, barely half a year"
Recruiter: "Then why did you get in touch with me?"
Me: "You were the one calling me [you moron]"6 -
After one year of procrastination I finally made the game with unity
Ladies and gentleman, spherical voronoi minesweeper
Yes, I made the game before with in c++ which looks quite shitty, but finally, unity29 -
I remember last year in school one of my teachers had us make a little web page with HTML and CSS. She was confused when I was using an external CSS stylesheet. She thought all the CSS had to be in a style tag inside of the index.html file...6

Broke my glasses in half.
Not being able to see shit i took my 3D glasses apart and ziplocked my glasses lenses on the 3d glasses frame. Been using this version of my glasses for a good one and a half year. Yeap13 -
If you hire nine women to make a baby, you won't get a baby in one month.
But if you hire one woman a month and impregnate her immediately, it will still take you nine months to get the first baby, but after that you'll get one baby per month for the rest of the year.
That's the difference between latency and throughput (and that's also how pineapple farms work, since it can take up to a year to grow pineapples).11 -
Company giveaways ain't so bad. Got a one year free subscription to a .tech domain and a Raspberry pi 3. :D5
-
One of my potential clients insisted we guarantee that the software we build will be bug free for a year. Was almost tempted to ask if they'll be OK if it crashes and burns after that.10
-
Discovered this app and the cute avatars. Found out you need at least 10 points to create one, so here I go! Just finished my third year in computer science, now exploiting the positive discrimination for girls to get summer programming jobs ;).17
-
You can hate me: as a 34 year old php developer, i've never used git in my workflow...
I plan to start today using it on one of my personal project (only because i have arrived at "backup-49.rar")(yes i develop on windows).
Finger crossed17 -
Happy 0x7E2!
Fun fact:
2018 = 2 x 1009 (both prime)
8102 = 2 x 4051 (both prime)
Let we all finiah at least one side project this year!11 -
Mom: Go outside a play.
Me: One I finish a couple more lines..
Mom: Get your #ss of the damn computer and go outside! BTW, I'm a 11 year old coder/programmer if you were wondering..13 -
Refactoring and writing tests for code that was code written by intern and is on production about one year
-
Don't be stressed about day-to-day challenges/problems. They'll mean nothing in one year or even one month. But the health damage caused by stress will stay with you.2
-
Hands up, who actually uses this shit?
Seriously, this is one of the most innovative apps I've used in the past year. The developer must be having fun torturing hundreds of people every day. But fuck this shit, it works (and most alarm clocks didn't work for me)37 -
Bought six mini NAT vps's for quite cheap for one year and now deploying them all into VPN servers.
This is very fun 😊11 -
Last year a random company hired me to develop an Angular app. One of the main requirements was that it needed to be compatible with IE6 cus thats what they were using internally... I accepted the offer...5
-
Internship is over and my one year old kitten is sleeping with me. Life can't be better.
Idk if he sees me as an older bro or something lol.
Anyways, good night, fellow dRs!6 -
* Intern comes back to the same company after a year *
[Senior developer] : What did you learn last year at school?
[Intern] : I can develop any Android app now
* Opens his phone and clicks on an app *
* Only one page with text : "Hello World" *
[Senior developer] * drops on the floor in an attempt to hide his laughter *2 -
Yesterday way my one year devRant anniversary! It's been a good year guys and gals (and whatever genders are out here). I can't be bothered to look up rant counts etc right now because I'm in the middle of my exams and I'm fucking exhausted but a bit thanks to trogus and dfox for creating this awesome platform and also a big shoutout to all the awesome people I met through here and have good contact with :). Keep rocking, devs!2
-
Client: hey ***, happy birthday can you help me fixing....
Me thinking: hell no, i deal with yall fuckers 364 days a fucking year and yall can't leave me the hell alone for one cocksucking day. I need this one damn day a year not dealing with yall assholes where i don't snap and drive 300 fucking miles to not drive a nail in a broomstick and drive it up your fucking asdls6 -
There should be a devrant Meetup one day. Basically The community just gets together, rants about stuff to each other but in person so we all meet our social interaction requirements for the year. Then we could buy swag and sit on our computers and work on our personal/group projects. It would give devs a great excuse to take a vacation once a year.14
-
year 1: hoping and praying no-one asks you to do anything on the big scary command line
year 5: if I have to leave the safe haven of my terminal to use some GUI nonsense, someone's gonna pay10 -
I think all the JS framework stickers should be the same size and shape... that way each year when you switch you can just cover up the old sticker with the new one :)2
-
After one year of learning to code I am still not sure if I am an adequate programmer or a really effective Google user...5
-
Every year my team have an award ceremony for stupid things we do throughout the year. There is only really one worth highlighting this year
Alzheimer’s award- given to one of our DBAs for this svn commit message: “updated the comment block but forgot to make the code change”2 -
Dear DevRant Gods,
Please let me filter out the pokemon go posts.
It is getting out of hand!
I'll behave for the rest of the year, I promise. I can either have one less present at Christmas, if that's what it takes!
With rant,
fredrf_3 -
Forty year old fathers squeeze in a quick beer on the way back from the grocery store while the kids are napping. Or at least this one does.12
-
My study organises a hackathon (12 pm to the next 12 pm so 24 hours total) every year and doesn't allow to bring your own coffee machine. Last year, the teachers machine was used but it's so freaking slow (produces one pot an hour or so) that we could hardly get any. Then, at the early night, it broke down. Everyone was going pretty insane without caffeine for that timespan haha. (Loads of people didn't bring energy drink because 'coffee at location' xD)
-
HAPPY NEW FUCKING YEAR BECAUSE IT WILL SUCK WAY MORE THAN THE LAST ONE AND CAN WE PLEASE JUST FUCKING STOP CELEBRATING AND GET BACK TO WRITING FUCKING RANTS AGAIN?! BECAUSE I WILL FUCKING DO!5
-
Im oficial! After one year of studying python / django I received an acceptance letter today. When I began, I didnt expected it would be so soon.
It's not my first job, but my first one as developer (will be doing stuff with python / django / pandas)
So Im happy...! Which is rare for me8 -
Debugger...Chicken I guess? Got it from one of my students last year. Adapter for scale. It's not the size that matters...2
-
Am so fricking happy right now. Last year I posted a screenshot of one my apps hitting over 10k downloads. Well today i woke up and another one of my apps has over 12k monthly active users too. Feeling like a champion!12

<lifeRant> My two year old daughter gets a sticker for going "poo-poo on the potty".... Meanwhile I'm stalking my one rant that is close to getting me a squishy ball! Who's really making progress in their life, me or her? </lifeRant>5

So. My mobile bill is due 24/01/17 and yet it is supposedly "357 days overdue", but a previous one due on 24/11/16 has "295 days left to pay". Some funky handling of the new year going on here....

customer: "hey, feature X is broken!"
me: *asks for details
customer, one week later: "feature X contains information about Y, that *must not* be"
me: *looks at code, at git-history, at related tickets
customer, one year ago: "hey, feature X *must* contain information about Y"
me, all the time: :-|4 -
My progression of learning git rebase:
Year 1: WTF just happened?! Where is my code?! *deletes and re-clones repo*
Year 2: Ok if I do it suuuper carefully I can get the other dev's one-line change into my branch...shit...shit...wait...fuck...oh lol it worked.
Year 3: Oh yeah let me organize my commits real quick. *drop pick pick squash reword pick fixup drop pick* *git push -f* 😎7 -
Our company Nerf wars got a little rowdy one year, and a co-worker knocked over a (senior citizen) co-worker just to “win”. Like full on take down body slam. So much for no physical contact.3
-
The year is 2019.
C++ is still one of the most powerful programming languages around..............with no centralized package manager that is widely adopted by the community that allows one to sandbox libraries from conflicts with one another.
I ain't hating, just find this funny and I love cpp
Apt get/git submodules it is!!12 -
Oh boy some mutex deadlocks inside the 16 year old, unmaintained, company application framework.
Time to look at the stack traces of 24 different threads and try and guess which one fucks it up
(Send help)5 -
Pressing that “deploy to production” button when it usually consists of multiple projects and databases updating at once.
Maybe I should look at separating them one year. -
Italian schools are by far the worst in the world.
I'm in a IT oriented school, where we should learn to code.
We spent the first year writing in Word and "programming" in Excel.
In the second year we started learning Visual Basic, a total waste of time.
In the third year we finally got rid of most of the useless subjects we had and started learning C++.
Sadly we had a teacher who wasn't able to properly speak and teach to students who never really programmed.
We didn't even know what a class was at the end of the year.
In the fourth year, the current one, we didn't have a teacher for the first 3 months.
Now we are learning Java, but just the basics.
Oh, we're also "learning" HTML (not 5) and JavaScript.
Next year, the last one, we will do PHP and SQL.
Maybe also C#, the most pointless programming language in the world.
What a beautiful country.22 -
@linuxxx went from 50k to 70k ++ in few weeks. Amd here am I with 390 after one year on devRant with my rants getting <10 ++ and 0-2 comments.35

Whoever designed the Google Play geographical restrictions had never travelled
1. Changing my country locks it for a year
2. I can only have one country
Clearly, people only cross borders once a year and don't need to download apps like the official local public transport route planner.15 -
this is an average salary ***Per Year*** of an ultra advanced experienced software engineer who lives in serbia, europe. the sad part is not that this is per year, the sad part is that this is so much money in this country that if you have this salary *Per Year*, you're one of the richest men in the block.
another sad part is, these $15,000 american US dollars are equivalent to 1.5 Million in our currency.
so basically people are so satisfied with this salary because they are basically "millionaires".
now tell me again, how bad is your salary?25 -
Now I know for sure that my coworkers can't read error messages.
Every fucking time git doesn't push or pull properly they can't figure out what's going on, almost one year since we migrated to git ... come on... read the fucking message!7 -
One of my clients once assumed that paying me 12$ for the domain entitled them a year of content writing and web development.3

#1 GoogleMap map = null;
#2 map.clear();
I'm used to bad code, since i'm responsible for code review of acadamic projects. But when i saw that one and last year students saying they dont know the reason, i died a bit inside3 -
MS paint is going away...
Wait no it's not...
SHUT UP! No one cares about paint. No one even uses it anyways. And no, because you opened it twice last year to crop a screenshot does not count as using it.15 -
I know last year suddenly lots of animated login popped out.
NPM actually uses one... and it doesn’t look that good14 -

Sooo... my 4 and a half-ish year old iPad (gen 3) has survived for over a 1000 hours on one charge!
And still going strong!8 -
I was going to be a wizard for Halloween, but since I am expected to perform magic year round at the request of clients, I might change it up for one night of the year.1

After dropping my c++ book, I just gifted my python book to a store keeper, in the hope that one day may be her twelve year son will become one of us, a programmer.

Programmer: We really have to refactor the codebase!
Director: That's not important. Do you think our customer would care what it looks like under the hood if we are selling cars?
One year after...
VP: We need to build a new platform for flexibility!
Director: Let's rewrite!1 -

This is fucking horrible and if this happens at many companies I understand why women leave techjobs.12 -
Not really rubber, but he's my duck.
He's literally one year younger than me so it makes it quite special.
I really like him 😄6 -
After EVERY. FUCKING. RESTART... I have to delete one of my keyboard layouts and re-add it so Im able to switch between them. Its been a YEAR now! But hey! Notepad has tabs now! M$...Bunch of glue sniffing monkeys...12

"The new platform is launching tomorrow. Get the most perfect first time user experience and registration flow. Don't leave until it's done."
Exactly one year later: "We are finally about to launch the new platform"1 -
Anybody else feel like you've missed the crypto-currency bus?
It's one of my frequent regrets this past year, and I'm still figuring out how to get started earning some BTC.7 -
Last year my goals were two:
- work less
- earn more
and I only achieved the second one.
Based on that, my new resolutions are:
- sleep more
- do not work more
- earn more or equal
- to gain stability
- more efficient workouts7 -
The year is 2030. Apple have attached cameras to their new glasses models.
Jobs at risk due to people leaking footage of their friends' jokes made with little thought.
No one is safe. Everyone is cancelled.8 -
Today, January 13th 2019, marks the one year anniversary of the initial release of DXVK.
https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk/...
Through DXVK, I've personally seen compatibility like never before with running Windows games on Linux. Some games which I had never been able to play on Linux before, games which tied me down to keeping a Windows desktop around - no longer bind me.
At the same time, today marks one year remaining for Microsoft's support of Windows 7 - which will be cut off at January 14th 2020. At which time those shackles would bind to a corpse.
I felt it appropriate to celebrate with a DXVCake!1 -
My mom has a blood pressure problem. She has to take medicine at 7:30AM and after dinner at around 9PM everyday. I installed a medicine reminder app and created two reminders. It’s been one year or so now, she’s still following those reminders😁9

Does anyone else get that surreal feeling where you actually realise you're paid to sit and write a language which most of the world doesnt understand, no one can speak it, and the those who may have the capability to write it don't really want to understand?
I mean, I'm pretty sure that a book written in Latin wouldn't sell well enough to pay the author year-on-year.
Pretty much job security through obscurity.
Surreal.3 -
Me asking my boss some deadline information through email: "Should this feature be added ASAP or delayed until the new year"
Him: "Yes"
Which one damnit?!6 -
I know, a rant about Mac vs Windows is nor fun nor original anymore.
But really, I restarted more times my Windows PC in one morning than my Mac in one year.
What should I do, while waiting for the n-th restart?
Re-fuck you.16 -
Truth to be told, I've learnt more programming here on DevRant in about a month than in one year of my computer science course in college.5
-
Just finished 2nd year of uni and got a summer placement doing game Dev. I walked in to be the most experienced person there because I am the only one doing it.5
-
The only reason I'm still using WhatsApp or Facebook is because my classmates have a social group in which they share important information and tbh that's easy than dealing with emails.
Have to deal with bullshittery for one more year.9 -
You know your expertise is increasing when you're working on your side project for over a year, and you thought the code you wrote in the beginning was so awesome and such a master piece. Now, one year later you realize it's shit.3
-
Guy I work with messaging me: Hey could you check my SQL syntax to get the date part for the month and year.
Me thinking: Ughhh this is going to be something stupid I know it. Why doesn't he just check it himself?
I check it... 2 queries that are very, very, very... simple... and similar except one returns last year (2017) and the other returns the current year (2018)
Me: Not sure what your issue is... I'm not getting any syntax errors. They are executing
Him: Well it shouldn't show 2017, it should show 2018
Me thinking: learn to debug you lazy fuck
Me: Well you're adding a -1 to your year...(Not sure why your even adding to it if your just getting the current month and year)
Him: Oh you're correct! That makes sense
Waste of my time2 -
I'm about to take my first real vacation in about a year. One of the things I'm most looking forward to? Time to work on personal projects.
WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH ME?1 -
Abuse "new" google meet background feature level : 999
- while in meeting take screenshot of one of my team mates
- mirror the screenshot and put is a background
- now pretending that I'm at their place
after half an year of lockdown... It was fun1 -
Last year, one of our assignments for school was to implement a caesar cipher in Java. There is that one guy, that doesn't understand the concept of dynamic variables, so he HARDCODED every single possibility for every character. More than 1000 lines for something this simple. Yes, we are studying informatics. Yes, he passed last year1

Year: 2006
Dad bought a 2nd hand computer from his office.
Configurations:
OS: Windows 98
RAM: 256MB
HDD: *Forgot*
15" CRT Monitor
Floppy Disk Drive
And the best moment of joy was when my then best friend who had 2 PCs with one of them was the best configured system of that era with wireless mouse and keyboard (wireless was extremely costly and rare then), comes to my house with a PC Game (WWE some year) and tells me that this game only works in 98.
Also, one of the most Proud moment I ever felt for my computer.1 -
Worked on a 13 inch laptop for one year straight. Back and neck started to get really f'ed up.
I bought a 27" monitor and still lean forward and my neck is still fucked.1 -
This year, Lord willing...
* get married
* take a one week honeymoon without a single frantic phone call/email/IM from work or clients. Way way harder than getting married!2 -

Sometimes when I have a 10s break, I think about what I did to get here, and what to do to get... somewhere alive (if possible)
6 years ago, I got my high school diploma in letters.
5 years ago, my depression started while I went to a development / management school. Dropped off one year before graduation, but I prefered to stay alive than having this diploma in my coffin.
1 year ago, I got this (kind of shitty but it pays well but it has drupal so fuck) job and my depression ended.
In two weeks, I'll get back to school for this last one year that I'm missing, so I'll finally get a better diploma.
Within 4 years maximum, I'll leave France to start a new / better / better paid life in Canada.
One hell of a ride, ain't it?5 -
In school, for the last project of the year
Had to show it to the teachers in charge
When I entered in the room they said my name and looked at me with a big smile
The usually took 15min per project, but they looked at mine for ~35min
One teacher was testing and the other one was writing
Everytime the second one was asking about a feature the other one said "perfect"
I was so proud of me 😁1 -
I don't know why but every time I look at a clock and it says 20:15 I always think like ohhh it's the current year. I then realize that it's not 2015 anymore. Am I the only one who does this?8
-
999 frameworks that do the same thing and every year 1 of them becomes the fad and many things written in last year's fad gets rewritten in new one.2
-
New year is the only +1 I do not give a fuck about. All it means is I am one year closer to death, so I will smoke one more cigarette after the last, one more cup of coffee with far too much sugar, and I will keep coding one more line after the other, and frankly it is just to distract me from the fact that there is always another +1, one more person to hate, one more word spoken, all so I can get to through one more year. So fuck the new year because there will always be another. But I won't always get a +1 on a rant.5

My first post of 2019.
One month to Valentine's Day, Last year's was spent with beer, the pervious with her. This year I want to spend with her and beer.
I somehow feel I will get neither.3 -
That's it. A year just passed, and here i am sitting in my dorm, watching from my window all those fireworks blazing, exploding, dazzling the sky.
I got no one to party. No one accompanying me.
That's all. Happy new year all!5 -
I can vaguely remember the 4 year old me turning the computer on while my cousin starts a dos shell to play Dangerous Dave.
5 year old me finds wolfenstien installed on my windows 95 , doom a few years later , quake after that .. one masterpiece after another.
Little did I know that software can make memories.
I grew up with software made by these legends and nothing excites me more than the dream of one day being in a team just like theirs with the goal of having fun and spreading it.
Carmack and Romero .. the people who architected fun from code.2 -
Rant
I'm a CS student at a university in the global top 10. We currently have two courses using Java, where we have to submit our work to a judge program. One of them is running Java 7. the second one Java 6! Come on, what year is it? Just update your fucking software and the assignments, you lazy fucks!
First rant. Am I doing this right?6 -
So it turns out that the iPhone X was one of the most popular christmas gifts this year in Norway. I mean fucking hell, how is that even possible given the price?1

Microsoft seems to get progressively worse every year. My work transitioned from google products (email, drive, chat) to Microsoft & it was a humungous step backwards. Everything crashes & doesn't save. Edge sucks. Windows 10 sucks. IE always sucked. Office 365 sucks. One drive sucks. MS Teams sucks. 😑9

OMG! the ancient one... amazon sells data mining book from year where not even computer existed.
FYI - if it's typo then not fixed for months3 -
My company doesnt have promotions. We do get quaterly pay raises. But a person with one year experience has the same title as someone with 10 years experience.
I did get a promotion article at the train station today for drink yoghurt with a flavour.2 -
Crossed the 3k mark.. 😁
Thanks to everyone.
Every rant, comment and conversation has been wonderful.
One of the best decisions I took in last 1 year was to join DevRant...9 -
One thing I've learned in the past year. Never start working on a task that's based on a lot of assumptions.3
-
Another rant reminded me of one of my dad’s favorite sayings about experience...
Some people have ten years of experience. Others have one year of experience repeated ten times.
..and for ohers, the recursion interval is shorter still...
As a bonus, here’s another personal favorite: “Nobody’s completely useless. They can always be used as a bad example.”1 -
Online tag, it was a small game topdown only using programmed graphics (simple circles squares and lines). One could hide underneath trees, and there were powerups, toggleable walls.
Was quite popular for a year or two. Would love to make a remake of it.2 -
This morning, i showed the communication manager how to use Photoshop (layer, image resize).
A year ago, I worked on the website, it has never been put online. The company's users never provided the content.
This afternoon, other people asked me where the site was, one year after!
I don't know whether to laugh of cry.
Ps : I'm sorry, my english level is low. I speak english as a cow speaks spanish.2 -
Please just let me cancel my 1-year subscription for the end of that one year NOW without only giving me an option to cancel everything right now and still pay 54 € fee, that's not only silly, it's what makes customers shout FUCK YOU Adobe! Long gone the good old times, who needs your outdated stuff in 2022 anyway?5

Today I got kicked out of college. On one hand I'm happy that I have more time to work on my company but on the other hand I'm scared I may have fucked myself for my future.
They said I have the possibility to return after 1 year. Anyone have advice for what I can do over the next year?10 -
I started my actual gig as CTO of construction group (Innovation Hub) a year ago. And it was a hell of a ride, implementing kind of a scrum-ban for project management, XP, peer-reviews, a git-flow, git commit message formats, linters, unit testing, integration tests, etc...
And it's the fun part because with the CIO we had to drive the board to do A LOT of changes in their IT/Innovation drive.
But in one year there is a lot of KPI that went up :
* Deployment: When I arrived it took three stressful days to deploy a new version of one application, once a month. Today we do it every week, and it takes three annoying hours.
* We had no test. NOTHING! Today we have 85% code coverage for the unit test, and automatic integration tests run by our CI server every day.
* We had almost no documentation. Today our code is our documentation (it automatically extracted and versioned).
* We had 0 add value in the use of git. With commit messages as "dev", "asked task", inside jokes and a lot of "fix" and "changes". Today we have a useful git, and we even use it to create our deploy changelogs (and it's only mildly annoying!).
* More important, the team is happy! They get their purpose, see betterment in their tech mastery. They started doing conception, applicative architecture, presentations, having fun.
There is still a LOT of bad things we are still working on, and trying to solve (support workflow and betterment). But seeing what they already did, I'm so proud of my TEAM! I'm a fucking asshole, workaholic, "just do it" kind of guy. But they managed to achieve so much. Fucking PROUD!! -
Coding along, frustrated already, need to restart computer to test something.
Of course im running on Windows and then I realize I have no restart opinion, the only one that exists is "update and restart"
*sigh*6 -
I finished a bunch of coursework yesterday and turned them in so that I could have some time to work on my side projects or self study for a few days before focusing on class again.
Today was gonna be my first day to enjoy this.
I recieve an email with the second batch of coursework thats due in a week. 7 quizzes, two exams, and 7 project labs.
Yeah, fuck you, too.2 -
Today is the first day of the last year of my bachelor's degree.
It's also the first day of work for one of my closest friends.
I wish him the best for this new adventure.
Good luck my friend and have a nice day !1 -
Lol, my boss wanted me to sign a one year contract for a shitty money, because "that's the standard in it". Well... no.5

My favourite year was probably 2016, when I left my previous job and became a full-time dev. That year, the OS project I'd been working on hit 10 000 users, and one of the collaborators decided to hire me.
Moved country, and had a really exciting time, and the years since have been pretty great too.1 -
!rant
I need a new OS.
I have one year of Kubuntu, one year of Fedora KDE and there years of Arch Linux (Openbox, KDE, i3wm).
Now I'm undecided between debian and Arch Linux as a stable System.
What do you guys recommend me?
I hate picking huge software from AUR and need to compile it, but i hate having always a, yes stable package, but under versioned...
(and, exist a Debian minimal without everything Archstyle?)13 -
2nd year programming professionally I designed, coded, and released a PCI compliant credit card encryption system, including updating all 7 million records (at the time) in our existing database to utilize the new system. By some miracle, it worked with only one small hiccup (see previous rant).

Refactoring a method of a 5 year old system. Probably one of the ugliest code I have ever seen. This is just a little piece of the ugliness6

So...
I'm doing an internship on the best company ever....
Boss is so awesome he waited half a year so I could do the internship... Cause Corona and fucking stupid Public workers (half my class didn't finish... Like... It's a pandemic and lets not facilitate, it's just one year of their life's)
Workers are great... Environment is so good that yesterday one coworker went to talk to the boss and me and the other did his job on his back... So we could all leave in time.
And I probably won't stay after... Because thers not enough work to hire me....
Fuck Corona. -
Will be leaving the current company at the end of the Year without being able to end the worst project I have ever seen.
Tempted to write an apology in the comments of one of the core files.... -
Continue with my ALL-OUT year of JUST DO IT. Trying to see what happens when I go YOLO for a year.
It started well about 4 months ago, but I slowed down a bit. I just want to pick up the pace again and JUST DO EEET. See where it leads.
Been working on a lot of side projects. I want to finish a few. One is already pretty much finished.
Then, towards the end of the next year, I think I'll start looking for a dev job.2 -
Currently taking apart a 25 year old scalextric power supply, trying to work out why one side isn't working. I'm thinking about buying a soldering iron, but can't see anything obviously wrong...15
-
I do some robotics stuff on the side. We built our robot around a Raspberry Pi last year. We had 2 Python scripts talking over TCP, one for the bot, one for the controller. Overflowed the buffer on the bot and it went berserk once the script crashed.
-
so I work at a mid size agency as full stack dev, the only one, at almost 1 year and just found out that my boss is trying to sell wix websites to clients LOL
I don't know what the hell is he trying to do...2 -
Wish you all a Happy New Year! Being a part of this community has made me feel a sense of belonging and that I'm a part of something bigger! Seeing all your fuck ups made me feel better that in not the only one, seeing all your accomplishments motivated me to achieve more in life! I would like to take this moment to thank you all and to make me feel proud of being a dev! I wish you all an amazing new year and may you all get whatever you wish this new year!

STUDENTS NEED MORE HANDS ON COURSES !
I'm doing a year abroad for the fourth year of my masters. I come from a school that really pushes projects, pitches and research forward while leaving in some theory.
Now that I'm at another uni in a different country I can't help but note how UNPREPARED students are for a professional setting ! And they are one year away from finishing their masters in Software Engineering...
Students should use version control tools, they should test their software, they should apply their knowledge to a concrete project ! A 3 hour course on software testing is only as good as its practical counterpart. -
To have only one Javascript framework which everyone can use which does not do breaking changes every fuckin 6 months or year. And newer versions are backwards compatible. And will not endorse in any framework wars1

I need to buy a laptop to replace my 5 year old one. My work is mostly in data science. My budget is really flexible. Any suggestions?6

Training a developer... After one year, he still doesn't understand "Update-Database"
Create a powershell command and just tell him to click on it after every git pull -
What kind of project sizes do you prefer and why? Big one, lasting year(s), or smaller ones, in range of months?6

Start developing one of the two games that I have been designing in my head for the last year or so.1

One year of work for request info on a new project, silence... First day of vacancy, request a how to on a function implemented 3 month ago. Fuck You...1

One day you're looking for a job for almost half a year, and the next you're being called by a company because they stumbled upon your resume (indirect path) ?dafuq? Wel today was that day, i hope I pass the intake though, wish me luck1

One of the projects started a year ago was to replace our tech/status dashboard. Two of our new people were even dedicated to developing it full time for 6 ~ 8 months. I found out today the entire board is gone, and it's been replaced to a link to Service Now.
Nearly a year of work, completely flushed down the tubes. Glad I wasn't on that project.2 -
There are multiple impoverished 12 year olds in 3rd world countries that have already built their own apps with thousands of downloads, while I haven't even finished one.3

System.out.println("Hello Programming and DevRant");
One year since I started learning programming and one day since I have DevRant.
Maybe I'm just gonna get crazy.2 -
First year of PhD over, no idea where my thesis is going, no friends who can understand, no one to ask for honest advice, no support, lab mates don't care, advisor is busy with I don't know what....... seems like I'm fucked9

And another one bites the dust. This is colleague number 5 this year. So far only one person got a replacement. Great that all the rest of us get more workload to handle.
Meanwhile i overheard the manager make a sarcastic comment about developers like “who needs developers”.
Good thing my crypto savings are gaining atm. I’m giving this company another year. Max.2 -
Female lead PM told me to another field to a already overcrowded screen, I slipped out the phrase: "Another one? It's already tighter than a Virgin just not as wet...."
Guess I just figured out why I didn't get a raise this year.3 -
I am curious if this companies hiring requirement would be a red flag for you. They want at least one year of Typescript experience. Fine. They would not consider a person with 5 years of Javascript and zero Typescript experience.7

Reminiscing my first tech sticker, this one's from my first hack-a-thon. :') gonna go to the same one in 2 weeks, kinda nervous because I didn't really learn much compared to last year. (but I shamelessly collect the stickers)1

Tomorrow, I'll start my last year of study at a web development school.
At the end of it I'll get a title that'll allow me to get recognition around the world, but the school doesn't end until 9th September 2018, so in roughly in a year.
I'm honestly shitting my pants, wish me luck 😅2 -
Why can't Google spend one whole year without deprecating some API?
I have an app on Play Store and every now and them I receive an email asking to update something until some date because it will stop working.
What a waste of my time >:(2 -
Last year, one of our government organizations' websites' edit page was editable without login credentials... People can easily modify or even delete a company. They had a login functionality for employees and was pretty much useless.

wtf boss!!!! Is it so hard to understand that having one column per year is a horrible bad practice?9

Omg I have to check 2350 svn commits.
We have 2 seperated frontends, one for maintaining old UI and one for new UI which is going to production in one month. So now I have to check if any CR/bug was implemented/fixed only on old UI. Frontend2 was created last year on july. Fuck my life2 -
Didn’t shower. Didn’t fix my hair. Wasn’t asked a hundred questions that could have been easily Googled. Got to chill with my one-year-old while waiting for Magento 2 to reindex. Lovin’ it.1

Contributing to large open source projects.
It's something I wanted to do since I fell in love with one programming language (which shall remain nameless here). However, I'm not restricting myself to one project. I have many projects I'd like to contribute to.
I even wrote this down in my 5-year plan for the future.2 -
ffs windows I should be the one who dictates when you update, fuck you.
Honestly, the best thing I've done this year was switching to Linux, the difference is astronomical.7 -

You either spend time organising the code even for a “small project” which “will never change” or cry at your mess one year later

Happy Birthday devRant. Still the best community for devs and future devs.
I hope this will still grow and become more recognized in the future1 -
Monday morning: "Hey uuuh the client receives 3 mails instead of one and only one of them is good, there's a problem, go fix it"
Yesterday, me: - "Hey I've been looking everywhere, made hundreds of tests, there's a problem with the files attached to the mail, they're unreadable"
-" I told you it's in the code, you didn't look deep enough"
This evening: "Umm it seems that there's indeed a permission issue. So I'm gonna rollback everything you've done since Monday"
One year. One year and I live this hell. -
I'm a workaholic.
My boss literally told me I've only used 1 PTO day this year and with only 2 weeks left I HAVE to take at least the rest of this week off.
Guess... I'm getting a really long weekend, took tomorrow thru Friday off, Monday and Tuesday are holiday, so only 3 days left of the year after 5 today.
Not taking the last 3 days next week because I don't trust my one co-worker to do end of month/year procedures without me there to verify they didn't fuck up anything.
Now I just have to get through that time stressing about things I'm responsible for breaking while I'm not there.5 -
My Mentor during the 1st year of my College
Set High Expectations and very frequently used to throw insults and shame me as if I knew nothing. And he was not wrong. I sucked so bad. Did learn some basics and promoted me one level from the "total newbie" state
But my best Mentor would have to be my PCs, Compilers, Debuggers. Couldn't find a better one1 -
Well i am working as an intern at this startup. Initially it was all simple crons and database. After one month one of the founder asks me to map two tables, create an api, integrate a fucking payment gateway and i am now left with a lot of work and confused state of mind.
PS: i am first year cse student -
I really want 2017 to be a great year...
One thing I do is have a movie marathon ... Last few years I did the Hobbit movies ...
I can't think what to do to start of this year 🤔
I'm already building this site ... For new year's day but I dunno what to watch to get me in the spirit , any suggestions ?5 -
Ok...
FUCK ASUS

Oh well... saved the grafics card, HDD and SSD... time to get new Parts and build a custom one myself...
FUCK YEAH!

What I did?
A hard coded one.

I'm close to one year at this company, and so much has changed. the amount of responsibility i have now is insane compared to last year. we'll have an intern this year, so there's gonna be someone learning the ropes from me. I'm having a say in bigger projects , I'm schooling people way over my pay grade, people actually come after me for help now, that's insane. what a fucking year1
-
My goal for 2020: actually finish a personal project.
Last year, I built 25% of a website, 10% of a companion app for a video game, and half of a command-line utility. I would really like to finish an entire project this year, but considering that I just started a new project that promises to be huge and unwieldy, that will probably have to wait for whatever project I try next after burning out on this one.1 -
I've been working for a company since last year. I was very enthusiastic and happy because that company always boasted about being the leader of cloud solutions in my country and I was really interested in everything related to the cloud computing world . However, after one year, my current task is updating stupid fucking private products that no one knows on fucking old windows server.....3

My father mainly believes I'm the one fucking his settings up. I only use his computer to read my e-mails. Once a year.
My mother keeps asking me: "what about your work? Shouldn't you be doing something about THAT instead?" -
As a dev, the present one. First year working as a dev since march. I learned a bajillion things and am being payed.
As a dev this was easily the most productive year of my life. -
So, this happened.
We are supposed to get bonuses by this time of the year, but at the evaluations meetings we were told that this year we won't because we've lost a client and bla bla.
Later this week, one of my colleagues just opened himself and told me that he and one more received the full bonus!!
So basically our employer just lied to everyone.
What would you do?
I'm leaving for sure, already think that this company is hitting a dead end, but i think leaving is not a good enough for the company to open their eyes and starting to value all its employees, even after I leave.7 -
Let's begin this year like the last one.
By drinking pretty hard and then only getting 3 hours of sleep.1 -

This week was probably the most creative, focused, and productive one I've had all year. Feels good.
3-day weekend, here I come!1 -
Worried about college because there's only one year to go for me to graduate, but now I don't give a fuck about it nor I care about any of my subjects. All I want to do is working on my own coding projects and play video games4

After one year of WFH I've just realize that I'm much much productive (and happier) by sleeping some extra hours at morning, doing outdoors activities during day and deeply focus working at late night.
I wish it to be healthy. I will let you know.2 -
CS wants me to do INCREDIBLY BASIC Scratch 1.4 (not even the new web one) instead of learning Rust.
It's second-year CS (UK), but seriously?3 -

And may we all get what we want :) -

New job had me working on a Mac.. great! Let's give this a shot and see what the fuss is about.
One year later and I can now knowledgeably say that macOS is balls slow, the worst Unix I've used day to day, Debian/Ubuntu 4 lyf.1 -
Meetings entire day. Management/PMs fucked things up and forgot an ENTIRE system. They just spend A YEAR for the requirements. A YEAR!!! Just unbelievable. Guess who has to shoot from the hip just fucking guessing things to fix it before everything should be in production? So sad. I just have to quit this incompetence. Just…incompetence. I know it is complex but to forget an entire eco-system of applications is just beyond idiotic. One whole year and God almighty know how many workshops and business travel expenses. I am fucking distancing myself from this organization. I have no hope. No hope.3

I'm starting Monday whish me good luck. I don't know if I'm more excited or more stressed I will know Monday.4 -
Well not actually a "loss" but in my previous class, a year ago, I've lost one of my USB-Sticks.
And suddenly, a year later, some random teacher got into class and asked for my name, then gave me my USB-Stick back! After one year!
I didn't remember the stick in the first place but then I realized it was the one I've lost!
Btw it was a 2GB one, with just a few files on it... -
I was just preparing my resume, since the old one was too immature . Realised that i couldnt put anything of note..that wasnt immature..
A complete year wasted on nothing.. -
So I quit my old job almost a year ago because of high stress and bad salary. The last day there was one of the happiest days of my career.
Now that I’ve enjoyed better pay, nicer work hours and zero stress for a year I am bored as hell. Thinking that I might need to change again just to get some stress going again (joke). Am I a horrible person? 😰3 -
I wonder why devs care so much about which programming language will die soon, so they keeping jumping from one language to another every year, while what I think is you will die before the language or you will be old by then and writing one line of code will be nightmare for you. Stop jumping languages jut get shit done.4

All of our products have a 16x2 lcd. Every April fool's we make all of them say some offensive/funny stuff. One year I made an Arduino controller for one of the other engineers units it took him a few hours trying to figure out how I was doing it 'cause he couldn't fix it.

I am one year experienced Android developer... just got an opportunity to work as a game developer in the same company(they will provide training)... I'm in dilemma whether to accept or no.. Is it safe to keep on changing fields😟6

So I just got the cyber security pack on humblebundle... $15 for a year of PIA, a year of spider oak one cloud backups and a year of Dashlane are the notable ones (I’ll give away the antivirus ones for free since I don’t have windows).
But that wasn’t the awesomest part...
I installed Dashlane and after transferring all my stuff over from LastPass, I went to delete my LastPass
Dashlane autofilled the username...
It’s like so subtly aggressive in an unintentional way. Honestly this password manager Battle Royale is totally worth the $15 regardless.13 -
Finally after one year, we finally released the app on playstore

My dear fellow programmers, I introduce you the best manga reading app for all platforms: Comet!

I've been DEV'in from past 4 years
Last year groups of 3 were formed for a group project, after a week one group mate asked me "what should I keep the file name for this java file".
Group Projects in college time still haunts me. -
How does a company in 2022 NOT have the option to buy more seats during the year you have some seats paid for?
We bought 10 seats (the min.) to test the App out and then wanted to buy 37 more but we had to go through days and days of dealing with people trying to figure out how to do that.
Their story is that no one ever buys more seats until the year is over. My guess is that no one continues with this company after dealing with this garbage. They have other products. Seems this one product is just ignored. Which gives me a business idea.2 -
TL;DR
I just got a mail from our universities tech support for a ticket I openend a fucking year ago... They didn't respond for a whole year and are now working on it?
One year ago I had problems connecting to eduroam on my Linux machine. No matter what settings I tried I never got it to work.
So I decided to open a ticket at my universities tech support. Fairly fast they answered me and tried to find what the problem was. Somehow only half my username made it to their server which means their is no way I can log in.
The conversation went on for a few mails but we never managed to solve the problem...
Now after one year they send me a mail stating that I can call them if I still have this problem.
Wtf? Who answeres to a ticket from one year ago? Why is the ticket still open? Did they work on it or just randomly decide to reply to old mails? Why didn't they write anything in the meantime?2 -
I fixed one problem we had at work with SSL over a year ago. Since then, whenever anyone has any problem vaguely to do with SSL, they come to me. The "expert". So I guess I'd like to become what I'm already perceived as... SSLman1

Isn't it weird that some parts of the world have crossed over to the next decade and some haven't. (If you consider 2020 the start of a new decade).
Anyways cheers to the end a year and the beginnings of a new one. Wishing everyone a very Happy New Year4 -
For a year straight my mom was yelling at me to get off my but and do something. little did she know I was learning to program and would one day land an awesome high-paying job.
-
So.. I had lots of jobs.
Since my 20s I picked mostly heavy work instead of intelectual work.
Went to the army, drove trucks, Cutted steel , worked a lot in were houses.
One of my jobs was cutting steel for the molding industry. I was replacing a guy who lost his finger in a saw.
Temp that was there for less then a year tought me so well in the first day, one year latter I was still working exactly has he tought me.
Best worker I ever saw, all movements were precise, exact measures to the mm, ways to do the work better and more precise...
Then proceeded to do shit, spent hours in the bathroom watching anime and playing on his phone.
Turns out he was already on his second year as a temp (wich is illegal in my country, can only do 1 year as a temp), and to make a contract the company wanted to pay even less then minimum wage.
Leaving me doing all the work.
So.. I broke my back, stopped working and as a thanks (I was still a temp and was already at the end of my second year) they just finish my contract.
One year after, the guy I went to replace got fired because couldn't do the work as me or my pro college.
My pro college got a better job.
Now I usually work in the molding industry and many of the companies I used to cut steel to changed suppliers because they started to have problems with that one. Like blocks of steel smaller that what they needed....
To bad this guy wasn't in a manager position... His the kind of guy professionals want as a boss -

Gotta calibrate it.

Almost finished upgrading our web app (react based). And I feel some killing urges towards some of my developers... But on the good point, it's almost finished, and I have to admit, the code the did last month was way better than the one the committed (yes it should a fucking crime!!) one year ago... So that's a good point.

My first Rant/Story
One year ago I was told I'll be working on a Magento 2 project.
I was told it's great you'll see it's so much better then Magento 1 (at that time I didn't even know what Magento is or what it's used for).
Now one year later, a day doesn't pass that I don't discover something new in it to hate. Every day there is something new that doesn't make any sense at all. But I found my way to live with it.. at least it isn't boring haha -
Working on an intense feature with a deadline, totally in the zone. Now being asked to have the borders fixed on a div as they are not the "right" shade. Took them one year to notice that. And no, I am not doing it now.
-
So this one dude at my school asked at a student conference, if they could swap Google for Ecosia as the search engine for all school computers. This ended up becoming an actual thing there a year after my graduation.
Imagine if a lot of other schools would do that too? Planting trees and ditching a monopoly, because one simple change from the IT department.1 -
It's funny.
When you are underpaid, you boss treats you well. Grants you everything you wish, etc.
After one year, when you request a raise, and asking to be paid NEAR the salary you deserve, and after you agree, he starts to act cold. -
Been worrying all year that I won't find a job next year after I finish my studies im november. So I decided to study for one more year, just to learn a little more of the tech before I enter the real world.
A day after my registration went through and my studies are paid for, I get a call from a recruiter to come in for a interview. Fml2 -
One year ago I made a resolution to do one of two things: get serious about learning neural networks, or finish one of the side projects (markdown based wiki with some nifty features). Didn't do the first one, and got the second one to about 50%.
Not really happy as I did not complete any goal. Still some decent work was done and built an open source parser. So, I guess I am 50% happy.
What were your achievements this year? Did you achieve 100%?3 -
Fuck me...
I had to get up at about 5am this morning to go to uni. From there I went to my GGJ site. I gave not one, but two mattresses to a friend so I'd have one if someone has the great idea to borrow my mattress. It's fucking 3:22am now and both are taken. Next year I'll bring a mattress for everyone I know... -
This week is the week of planning ahead for the whole left year upto beginning of next year.
My tongue has muscle soreness, my brains gyri are straightened out, my throat is hoarse... And talking really feels like licking a cactus.
I. Hate. Talking.
Just one more day with 8 hours of meetings.

I just had a ptsd (not real ptsd) attack cause I remembered in one of my first jobs we had gulp, grunt AND webpack to build our angularjs project.
Did I fix that mess? Sure!
Will the memory of it stalk me until new year? Absolutely.1 -
Just a random question: how much does it cost to retain a domain name?
I know we can rent a domain name for like an year or such for $5-10 if its a unique one. After 1 year, we have to pay an increased amount for every subsequent year (which keeps on increasing i guess?)
So how does these new emerging companies ( or any company in general ) retail their domain rights? For eg paypal.com would have costed only a few bucks when first bought, but when the company got famous, its domain rent must have increase by a 1000 times. So does these big companies pay millions of dollars just to retain their domain name?8 -

After a year working in an office where everyone worked part time (manager 3h, other programmers 5/6h per day) and I was the only full time employee …

I really love development, but I hear lots of great things about CS...
Do you guys have any input?1 -
Have anyone in Norway/Scandinavia ordered a devduck/apparel from the swag store and can tell me how long it did take? Want to order one, but not until at the start of next year.

This guy was giving an introductory course on Big Data one year, was boring as f, came in class with unreadable 80 slides presentations, asked us to re-code one of the assignment he gave us for the term exam. I went to two of his classes and still rocked the assignments, flunked the exam tho.

One year ago I graduated from university college,
Thought I had a stack overflowing with knowledge.
How wrong can one man be?
Very wrong, apparently...
Even though I only had a bachelor degree,
I landed a job at a nearby company.
Today I'm maintaining the code I wrote back then,
Seriously wondering if I could just write it all again.
The code I wrote I would consider a crime,
But it's good to see improvement over such a short time.
I still dread coming back to this code in another year,
Thinking yet again; "What the hell went wrong here?".2 -
Pick one:
Live out your school life again as a 10-year old with the same level of knowledge you have now.
Or,
Be 65 years old with $10 million in the bank.42 -
If you're one of us terminated / unable to find a job / massive paycut due to "market conditions" -
Make sure you remember.
Remember and make them pay.
Through the nose.
Next year (I hope..). -

Anyone have any experience with organising hackathons from the very start? I'm part of the Google developer group for my city and am a co organizer with a friend. We're not planning on one this year but we would definitely like to organize one for next year. Could anyone give some tips on how I could perhaps finesse sponsors into participating? 😁1

I'm all for alternative methods of learning but this post on FreeCodeCamp is total bollocks.
How does someone take and complete a class in data structures in one week?

Sitting at my desk, happy tapping away at code, and one of our newer team members asks a general question (4 of us in the office)....
"Uh.. how do I undo a git revert?"
🤔🤦
FML... Very much looking forward to leaving this place next year.5 -
Last year, a new project manager started that wants every limitation fixed that was approved by the previous one...
It feels he will open the Pandora's box for very very minor gain.1 -
I wonder if anyone else realizes how stupid it is to loop years around for fear of arbitrary artifical consequences designed to just keep people as land bound surfs.
seriously.
everyone travels
everyone fucks
or wants to.
and people fall down sometimes
doesn't mean you have to invent a system that drags them back through years of history to get that 60k job all over again !!!
also next year means take the calendar year and add one assholes !8 -
PM: 'the project is going down but the client is so happy from you.. he is inviting you to a new similar one'

Every year a company holds a 6 hour competition for three different universities. The first year I basically showed up and sweated a lot cause I was pretty new but the next year I was in third place for the first few hours. I eventually fell behind, but it was way better. The one for this year is coming up in a couple months and I'm pretty excited.

In our final year project of my course in 12th grade we have to present a project that shows what we have learnt over the years. I my self am doing a game in unity and i was very surprised to discover one of my colleagues had decided to do a quizz as his final year project... in unity which he is them going to export to web. I'm not one yup judge but i think it's a very poor choice of platform.
I hope the projects are better this year because last year was a disaster and somehow there still were people with good grades.5 -
I want to merge select and delete/drop query together and make it as one in MySQL. For ex:
Select * from t where year = 2015 and drop table tab;
or
Select * from t where year = 2015 and delete from tab;
and ya you can't use ';' for merging4 -
If i ever finish this college one year and get that degree ill go to every interview with 0 knowledge and brag about having a degree so they can hire me just so i can see how much is the degree worth

Which makes more sense: Coding a website membership system based on a design pattern of renewing 1 year to the day of initial registration? Or coding one that renews everyone on June 30th regardless of when they first registered?3
-
A few hours ago, I randomly got a Dribbble invitation from someone.
Very surprised because I only uploaded one design in potato quality half a year ago 😯 -

Just finished binge watching salvation in two days. One of the best series I watched in the last year. I highly recommend it. Although the technical aspect is unrealistic af.

My opinion on CSS & component frameworks?
>Build your own and reuse.
Have I done so? No, but always wanted to and I will have the opportunity to build one next year for a company I work for. Best of all, it will be open sourced.
SUPER EXCITED2 -

Having one year of experience in javascript and almost a year of experience in java. I am still not sure which one to use for interviews.
Would I able to handle questions on hashmap and hashset if I chose to work our data structures problem in javascript?.1 -
My New Years resolution is to learn at least one new language.
Post what you think I should learn and I will give you a language to learn this year. -
The project I’ve been working on for the past one year has been put on maintenance mode so the number of deployments will be significantly limited (around 4 per year). So what does this mean for me? I will be moved to a new team? Or I need to start looking for a new job? Or nothing changes?
I’m backend dev btw— I don’t deploy it. DevOps does it.1 -
In this time of the year is a tradition to spend time with the family (they expect you to do) but I have to do other things (e.g. my project).
So I have to balance those compromises... I kind of feeling that one of both is a time waste... can you guess which one?
How do you spend this holidays? Any tradition in special(unique)? -
For my university last year research i would think to do augmented reality based research. does any one know research areas along with augmented reality?1

One of my office mate said that she is making the same resolution since last 8 years... And the resolution ia:
To not make any resolution for the year..😎 -
Do you have some recommendations on server providers with hour based billing?
I wanr to run some simulations which need appr. 8 cores and 32gb of ram for one or two days and I don't want to rent a server a hole month or year for this.19 -
How do you decide on what languages and/or frameworks to use in personal projects?
My uni work is done for the summer on Friday and I want to start working on a couple of side projects.
I use c# at work, and this year I’ve been doing Java and next year I’ll be doing python with uni.
There’s a handful of languages I’d like to work with, but I know that I’ll get the best out of picking one language and digging into it, but I’m not sure how to pick the right one.1 -
Happy new year! Happy new year!.....and so onn.

I need advice: study 4th year (Bachelor's) or work?
Thought I saw a similar thread a while back but can't find it in search right now.
21 years old, end of this year I'll graduate with a diploma (3rd year). I have one option of university here because they're the only one that offer my course (IT instead of CompSci like the others). Their administration and general status is not stable (see my earlier rant or Google CPUT protests in the news). Couple this with a deep desire to move out (housemates and drama) and wanting to keep working instead of going back to study.
Thoughts? My current best bet I think is to hedge my bets and apply anyway, then if I don't want to study next year I won't. Still seeking opinions though. Local market (mostly recruiters) values qualification too much. Planning on moving away anyway but will need a job to hold me over until then.
