A: So are you the programmers of this software?
B: Yeah, I did the front end
A: Oh it looks so fantastic! It is simple, yet beautiful and responsive. Truly great design, you are so talented!
C: I did the back end...
A: Oh, you mean the server stuff?
C: Yeah
A: Niceeee11 -
CTO: I heard about this great architecture of microservices. What is it exactly?
Me: it's building many servers with one responsbility each.
CTO: That sound good. But let keep it simple and build only one big microservice.
Me: 😲

I created an open-source module for Angular about a year ago, which is now used in a real project for a big client by someone else! What a great feeling.
Just had to tell someone, my friends and family doesn't understand this code stuff.13 -
Me : You should try this app, its great!
Friend: What is about?
Me : A place where programmers and developers tell jokes and complain to each other
Friend : But you can do that i real life too
Me : But now you don't have to leave your computer to do that1 -
Is devRant Just for rants?
I see such a Great community here that goes way beyond complaining about PMs and users (even though you're all right, usually). I've read comments about support for depression, Anxiety, people being supportive of woman and downvoting/commenting against the common sexism that we see on the internet every single day. We have fun, we all feel like friends even though we can remember only a few names and stumble uppon them once in a while. We mostly understand each other and it all feels like a huge family. It's a Great thing to help throughout all of the struggles I have daily in Life, and I bet many people here feel the same.
Thank you all so much for making devRant this Great community. Papa bless.13 -
So, my boss just overwrote an entire disk with a dd command. Now no of the virtual machines are accessible.
This is going to be a great day.........8 -
Oh yeah no this is fucking great. I get around 5 hours of sleep a night during the week.

Insert logs, build, update, run.. now it freakin works o.O11 -
Gooooood morning devRant! Fucking friday, fuck yeah.

Have a great day everybody and thanks to dfox for keeping me in the loop on this!14 -

Wrote it because fuck it why not. Was sick at home and wanted to build something :)
Feedback would be great!
About the short character limit, I might up it a little but this thing is about writing short messages and not stories so that's a choice on purpose.43 -
This is why my bro is my bro.
I'm in shit with money and rent, so my mate gave me £10 for food and offered me a desktop (I had to sell my laptop) so I can make a bit more money doing software development.
Humanity may be an overall pile of steaming dog cum, but there are some great people in the world2 -
That moment that you have a job interview the next day and your voice just disappeared due to a cold.

Him: *starts going off on all his experience*
Me: that's great. Let's see what you got.

HR: Besides babysitting as a teenager this is the only company I’ve ever worked for.
Dev: I thought so.3 -

I've dreamed of learning business intelligence and handling big data.
So I went to an university info event today for "MAS Data Science".
Everything's sounded great. Finding insights out of complex datasets, check! Great possibilities and salery.
Yay! 😀
Only after an hour they've explained that the main focus of this course is on leading a library, museum or an archive. 😟 huh why? WTF?
Turns out, they've relabled their librarian education course to Data science for getting peoples attention.
Hey you cocksuckers! I want my 2 hours of wasted life time back!

I found this poster in one of my labs at University... Why is he trying to align the CPU with the cooler before the CPU is even in the mother board.
Great play, forgot the thermal paste as well.4 -
Setting up for a bit of work on the patio. Today was a beautiful day in Denver, so I wanted to take advantage. This is the bar at Union Station, abutting the plaza in front of the building. Great people-watching!3

Me: don't limit yourself! Learn more than one thing, experiment and learn more.
Devrant: don't use x. X is a piece of shit and its not worth it. This is better, and you are wrong.
I hate highly opinionated people. Devrant seems to be full of them.
I seriously believe this is why people like AlexDelarge left. Sooo many punchable motherfuckers up in this bitch man.

Week 26 advice - you all probably know this but good to refresh!
Eat healthily
Sleep well
Document clearly
Annotate your code
Use version control properly
Keep yourself in check with project management tools
Your peers are your friends... And competition.
As much as your boss is an idiot respect them and your life will be easier.
With great power comes great responsibility; don't touch that keyboard until you think through what you are doing chances are your first idea is not the best.
Don't write quick fixes and say you will go back to clean it up later on when you have time. That time will never come.3 -
I hate asking for help on here as this place is mostly not intended for that but fuck it for now, I need help on this one!
Installing Arch isn't working for me. Installing any other Linux system (debian or RHEL based) works great.
I've seen some things online about EFI files and so on but I honestly don't understand what that stuff is (about).

From the guy who wrote all the Programming Microsoft books and the Annotated Turing book. Comes this book.
This book is great for beginners great for people who don’t know a lot about software and how computers work, simple read. I like it because it also gives a different prospective, beginning at Morse code and works up from there all the way up to high level languages.
The book gives snippets of code to discuss it not really a tutorial book. It’s a different type of book that all people could understand.
Good read32 -

So my php devduck finally came in! This is seriously the coolest. Me and this duck are gonna have some great convos together xD Thanks devrant!2 -
devRant on a HoloLens!
The HoloLens is really cool, I was allowed to use it after a short hackathon. I am still surprised, but it works great and the concept feels natural after a short moment - web browsing is not recommended as no website is optimized for mixed reality (yet?).
Sorry for the low quality photo (it is not the compression algorithm's fault this time).10 -
Just noticed on "winehq" that the acronym for "Wine" is "Wine Is Not an Emulator". This is great and all, but all my mind can think about is the infinite recursion problem they've got there.11

You are all beautiful people. Thank you for your unique mix of talents to make for a variety filled platform. I have come to appreciate different parts of the industry due to exposure on this site. It is great to joke around and just "be" here. No pressure, just banter and the occasional fighting. I think this is a good thing. I hope this place grows.
Remember, you are important and awesome in your own way.4 -

Hello devRant!
My name is Carter Schaap, a maker from SW Ohio. I've been voiding warranties for most of my life, and am currently at Great Oaks Tech School learning HTML, CSS and soon-to-learn JavaScript.
I dabble in C++ (because Arduino is a thing) and I'm learning Python because I'm getting into Raspberry Pi.
I can't wait to get involved in this community and do a lot of ranting.
Have a great holiday season!7 -

Some time ago I went for a job interview (Unity3D Dev). I have little experience in this field and never thought that I would get this job but wanted to gain some and thought that it would be a great opportunity.
So after the interview, which was great and I really enjoyed it, I've been tasked with making a simple minigame. Only requirements were that there have to be player controls, character must avoid obstacles and camera must be moving with player's progress. I've made a little spin on those. In 2d minigame I've created you are piloting simple (made out of 3d primitives) rocket. You have to avoid randomly spawned platforms. If you hit one, you explode. You also die, if you hit a wall or fall out of camera and hit Destroyer. Camera is constantly moving as long as you are moving. The spin is that you have very limited fuel. To regain it you have to land on said platforms with your thrusters. It took me around 12h to make this game. The only reason I know it is because they wanted this info. I've learned a bit while working on this minigame and had a lot of fun. It was a great impuls to start learning gamedev again and stop stagnation I fell in when I started my studies and work.
Today I've got response. Obviously I didn't get the job. They took more experienced person and I totally understand that. But there's more. They were so great to give me pretty extensive review of what was done good, what could be done better and how to gather more experience. They said that the game met their expectations and was written well. That's great, because I was worried that it would be bad since I haven't worked on graphics at all.
So, at least I got an impulse to start learning and maybe I'll even go for some game jam!4 -
Hello * ! I'm browsing devrant since few months and finally subscribe.

What really matters about being a developer is how you use your skills, you can know lots but you need to be creative and open-minded.
Don't use your skills for stuff like this, with great power comes great responsibility, don't abuse your powers to give people camcer2 -
Hello Everyone!
This is my first post on devRant. Looking forward to reading and participating in other great posts!21 -
This is my desktop setup reveal 1 of 2, I wasn't sure about the monitor stand (which is why I only got the 2-arm) but really love the extra space it gave me.

i5 4690k

So a few colleagues left the company leaving me as the most experienced person for our project and I hated to do all the babysitting for the new colleagues and trying to hold on against the new levels of pressure.
But I have just realized, that this is a great opportunity for me to evolve from a regukar worker to a leader.
Also this opens the door to creating my own company. I haven't felt this excited in a long time.3 -

I will be pitching my startup idea for the first time in my life to potential investors one on one after qualifying for a second round in a business competition.
I am nervous 😬, desperately need to get the fund, and haven't been a good presenter.
Background: the business is still on prototype stage.
I stutter by default if I am slightly nervous.
From feedback my prototype is great- but my pitching might not be too great.
Damn I just have less than 6 hours to pitch.
Fuck this nervous mess.
Dev wish me good luck😶14 -
Me in my head: I've got this great idea for an app. You can probably build it in a hour. This is going to be awesome!
Ten minutes later: Screw this, can't be bothered anymore. What's on tv.?1 -
Great choice of design.
Now can you guess where the embedded fingerprint reader is on this screen ?

No other language can do something as fucky as javascript.

It will be a great day when JS finally prolapses under the weight of its own hubris.11 -

This is a nice community and this app is a great too. No ads or promotions are also there. So how does app manage financially ,i know there is a swag store but is that enough .As community gets larger, more resources are needed to keep everyone happy ryt ? more servers etc..
Will there be a different model when this expands ?

Today I decided it was a good time to give back to the developers of this awesome platform. I bought some 'Shiny new avatar items' and subbed to the Supporters thing. The community is just great. Keep up the great work guys.
Also, Would it be possible to move the phone a few pixels further away from the monitors? Looks a little bit weird atm.6 -

It's a little dark but I got my MacBook from a failed startup and they paid me with the MacBook. Got the screen pretty cheap on letgo, it's nothing fancy or amazing but it does what I need it to do. It's been said before but devRant is the best. It's one of the only places I can talk with other devs. Even though they're surly. So many people on here who know so much more than me. I can learn and be motivated to get better. This is a great community. I'm genuinely thankful for it.4 -
"We don't use a VCS like git, what are you opinions on this?" This is great in my opinion. You get to see some people sheepishly agree and say it's fine and try back it up, or people put valid points why they think it's wrong. You can start to gauge a person's personality after a few of those kinds of questions.4

This guy is a programmer for sure, he thinks he made a great product, but it's unnecessary and inefficient 😯6

today is one the worst day of 2018, after this
https://devrant.com/rants/1571445/...
I was looking through the websites which were made in the company last year, and while looking at a website I said: "this website is looking total shit, what the fuck is this".
Guess what, the guy who made the website was there and more worst he's my senior, I'm currently doing a project with him. He was not happy with this comment ( I thought the guy who made this left the company ). I totally fucked up.
Now I will search for another job. I can't bear this.4 -

Building a wheel is great.
Building a steering wheel is also great
Building a brakes pedal is amazing.
Making them work asynchronously - not that good of an idea is it...
Who the fuck thought separating data stream (copying bytes) from stream control (when does the stream start/end) is a good idea...?
- open a connection
- send data to the stream
- send() returns
- close the connection
Apparently, the send() does not copy the data and returns. Instead, it enqueues the data copying task end returns. When does the actual copying start? IDK. When does it end? IDK. Can I close the conn? NO!
This thing is UNUSABLE. And I'd riddle it with reflection-based workarounds if it weren't for the static methods.
Fuck!3 -
The devRant July 13 update and roadmap is amazing. Great recap of recent happenings and the map to an exciting future.

Am I the only one that down votes reviews for an app just because the review is from someone who's incompetent?

Like ok you incompetent fuck, that's not at all how this shit works.3 -

Making an MVP is hard as hell. It's not even coding that makes it hard, it's knowing when to stop that's so damn difficult. By the time you're ready with something, your brain says "Hey...wouldnt it be great if you added this!" Then you add it, "whoa add this too!"...several days later:
Brain: "The fuck is this, all you needed was that"

tldr; devRant is great
My favorite part of devRant is I ask an opinion on a technology and so many people give me alternatives or ideas to look into and learn about instead. This is why I enjoy this community I'm always learning about new things i probably wouldn't have heard about otherwise. Or at least wouldn't have run into for a long while. Thank you all1 -
And then I thought why not turn my resume into something weird and nerdy. And the result is this, a web app which looks like a terminal and connects to an actual Ubuntu terminal. It's not great, but it's something. 😃

Updated an online profile on a jobsite this morning for a frontend job. Got called this afternoon:
Recruiter: “i have this great frontend opportunity for you. Are you interested and can i mail the vacancy over?”
Me: “yes i’m looking for something so mail it and i’ll get back at you”
A few moments later...
Recruiter mailed a backend function
This is why people don’t like to work with recruiters.3 -
Does anybody out there actually really love their job? Because I do. I'm not sure if it's just me or that my job is actually great, but my coworkers are respectful, my boss lets me have control over each project's pace, I get to write tests and invest in refactoring, and I make good money doing it.
Is this just me?7 -
This bus driver really has to stop wasting my fucking time. He was 8 minutes late in the first place (this line is NEVER late) and then he took a 10 minute detour which means I'll be 2 trains late for work. Fucking great start on the week!5

Refactoring! Refactoring! REFACTORING!
This is one of “those desk books” that you gotta have imo. Personally I love giving names to categories of things, helps us better recognize patterns if we can classify them.
Software can always be improved, this book give you a good majority of the most common refactorings it’s like a recipe book almost.. shows you the code smell... give you the detailed recipes to fix it. Great to have in code reviews.
Doesn’t matter that this book is in JavaScript the concepts and ideas are the big pictures in this book.
Classic “one of those” books.23 -
"'This is just a temporary fix, I'll refactor it into something great and modular later" thought I as I continued to sin for the umpteenth time.
-
"I've quit Facebook" - congratulations, and here is your medal.
Like, most that are quitting facebook raves about how bad it is, but what they don't realize is that they're bringing Facebook behavior to other platforms instead. "Look at me; how great am I for quitting Facebook"-behavior and actions are only seen on Facebook.
I don't like Facebook either (and haven't used it in years), but there is a phrase that is perfect for when shit like this happens: "double standard".3 -
I have a minor feature request for the android app.
I would love to swipe down to refresh the current view. The reason for this is that sometimes my Internet connection isn't great and a rant does not load (or any other page).
It makes the app feel slightly gimmicky while a simple refresh would suffice.

So, I am feeling low in life. I want to do so many things and not a single one is going as planned. On top of that Bitcoin has taken a plunge and my funds are stuck with a shitty exchange and I cannot withdraw till tomorrow.
Le a github issue appears and I am thinking what went wrong now. I had added a few new features to the app which would have broken the old configurations. So, I ask this guy to re-configure and test.
After about 2 hours I get a reply from the guy saying "Thanx for the great new features and for creating this great open source project!!!"
This made my day. And I am thinking Life's good. Life is so easy and we make it so difficult for us. The first thing I am doing after this review is write this rant. Now back to work.2 -
!dev
fucking great, I come to parent's meeting at school, what a waste of fucking time this is.
the cherry on top: a fucking fake einsten quote on my kid's report, the one that says "there are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is."4 -
The new devRant vote info is great! Improvements like this is one reason we all love devRant! Thanks devRant team for implementing this.

Wow, great read for anyone that's interested.

For example, this snippet is very true and I guess a lot of use know it. (It's how I became a programmer).1 -
"Use this great extension for your IDE!"
Yeah, thanks, now I have 57 extensions installed and not one of them is useful because my fucking IDE crashes every fifth minute.8 -
This is probably the only social media platform with relevance to me... I've crossed over into the great beyond and can't turn back!

is devRant opensource or in any way clonable? if not, it should!
is a great app and i alredy have couple of communities that would benefit a lot from using a tool such this one8 -
After 1 year of working as android dev and coding in java, finally switched to another startup where everything is in Kotlin where I will be the only one maintaining that project.
Me: This code has almost no comments
Senior dev: Code is pretty self explanatory
FML
At least she spent 4 days with me and walked me through the code, so I'm not totally lost which is great!2 -
Here is another Tester story for you!
Tester: We have a problem with the application and it says that we cant process the queue to store the objects in the database.
Me: Can we reproduce it easily?
Tester: Yes..
Me: Ok, I'll add some debug for you so that you can see the error and the worker status more easily.
Tester: Great!
<10 minutes later>
After adding the debug output and installing it on his test cluster this happens...
Me: The debug version is installed.
Tester: Ok, great!
Me: How fast does it take to reproduce?
Tester: Well... It happened this morning at 9
Me: Ok..? But are you able to reproduce the issue at all?
Tester: No... i don't think so...1 -
Never thought I would like a standing Desk, but this is pretty great. Got horrible sleep last night, was falling asleep at my desk, so I stood up and pulled the desk up and WAM! No more sleepiness! Who needs Coffee or Soda when you have the power of STANDING.6

Was part of a meeting where the TL was discussing ideas for a product based on a new technology, I had read and played a bit with it myself so added a few cents, here is what unfolded:
TL: Great that u know abt this why don't you build a poc.
Me: It's simple to get this poc working, but how will we monetize this?
TL: You don't worry abt that, build a poc.
Me the next day: Here is the poc you asked for.
TL: Great so this can work let's release a basic version soon, so any ideas on how we will monetize this?1 -

Visual Studio Live Share is finally available for the general public! I beta tested this, it's great. Check it out:
https://visualstudio.com/services/...
Much better than pushing and pulling with git for pair programming.3 -
Me: here is my idea with the code. Does it follow what you had in mind?
Dev lead : this is good...really good but if you could take everything you have here and make it a reusable module that would be great!
Me: so it is or isn't what you had in mind?
Dev lead :: it is but I need you to change it all.
Me....FML -
Just finished a week and a half with 30 hours of overtime AND got my stickers today. This is turning out to be a great Wednesday!2

Stupid fucking communities normally all pieces of garbage. And no, there is no built in garbage collection, but then I find this, I POST 1 THING AND I GET GREAT RESPONES AND REALLY NICE ENGAGEMENT LIKE WTF3

Our team is small but we pretty much always have fun times. Our bosses have been visiting us this week (they work in a different country) and we've been partying almost every evening, they even paid for it. Our new employee who starts officially next week was also invited. Such a great time!1

Most useless feature?
Any this business seems to think is the next great way to make their lives easier - by adding 500 more steps into an already complex series of cowboy processes.
I love and hate my job some days 🤦♂️1 -
Wow, this code someone wrote a while back is really great. Words never uttered by anyone that meant it.1

Today.
Client: “can you make this last minute change to something fundamental?” (Paraphrased)
Me: “yes it’s doable but a major pain in the ass at this late stage”
Client: “great! Well if it’s just a quick change sit tight in it just now and i’ll let you know tomorrow if it’s to go ahead”
Me: “is this real life?”1 -
I like my work colleague, great to talk to, bless his heart, however he has this mysterious power to make whatever he writes sound super passive aggressive or aloof. For instance:
Me: this request , to clarify you want me to do this, as per this document
Him: is that what you presume?
Me: 🤨2 -
My first gig straight out of uni was on a project where my role required fixing an FTP client to upload files from a clients machine to our server. It was a spreadsheet. VBA. An excel spreadsheet. FTP client. A spreadsheet.
Me: "why are we using VBA for this?"
PM (was a dev 10+ years ago and started the basics of this 'ftp client'): "VBA is great." *Stern face*
Brilliant3 -
So I'm at a hospital (everything is fine as long as I'm concerned) and there's this pregnancy sign... But it just hit me (not sure how to start this idea) sex is this amazing interaction between softwares so good and well coded that we already know what can create, not only that but the hardware (with some flaws here and there) makes such great UX! Seriously, the join of code (one of the hardest code I know) to make a better code and the interaction thanks to the hardware is great! Thoughts?10

Started my first job as an associate software developer. It feels great.
At this moment life is perfect. -
Ok, so we have the Spotify Agile Model now (tribes, squads, chapters, etc). I have seen it implemented in a few large companies, and they seem to be doing ok.
It's just... doesn't anyone worry about the product that came out of this great way of working?
Spotify is great as a service, but it has to have one of the worst usability/success ratios of any modern mobile / web app. You can almost feel the various squads doing their own thing, not thinking about the whole experience.
Doesn't the product count when considering using someone's way of working? Is the Spotify Agile Model the project management equivalent of Twitter's Bootstrap?5 -
You know what I really like? When apps override the scrolling behaviour...
Yes, I really want you to disable my scrolling settings and enforce your own goddamn scrolling logic, it's so great to have shit I'm used to being forcibly removed from me.
Biggest surprise is the latest place I've seen this is Unreal Engine :O Scrolling the news in the launcher is slow as fuck.2 -
Publishing stuff and receiving feedback and improvement ideas is sush a great feeling. A guy opend an issue today asking for a feature to be implemented and he was very polite. Thanking me for my work.
This is way better than money. Money can't buy that feeling. People like this guy is the reason open source stuff lives. -
Stack Overflow is a great resource for all sorts of programming hints and tips, information and...sadly, desinformation. But if you want to comment on something someone's said you need 50 reputation points. How to achieve that when you need rep points to do anything that could earn you rep points? It's a catch 22 for newcomers that are like totally excluded from any discussions at SO which is more sort of a read-only community to me. This is where devRant shines. Anyone can rant about anything and comment on anyone's rant. Some rants and comments are stupid, and some are great. In the end of the day, freedom of speech is a great thing.9

Finally.
Coming home from my parent's after an extended Christmas vacation, this is a great gift to find on my doorstep (figuratively) -
I know this is sort of off topic but I think Psychology is pretty great sometimes and while it doesn't explain why we behave the way we do, it does a great job studying it, at least. So to explain why fake news is so rampant and why despite us being in the middle of the technology age, so many are still ignorant, they conducted a study on what makes a source credible. It's a very long and thorough study, so I will like it for you to read, but the gist of it is this: any long text which is too boring to read word for word is automatically taken for truth. Images add credibility. And simply adding a reference - even if it isn't a credible reference or if it's not related to the information at all - will make readers assume truth, and most won't even think to validate the links.
Here's the full story:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/...2 -
Me after Linux reinstall: "this is great, now let's get back to work. Let's install the packages, then let's run the test server. What do you mean postgres can't be found? Wait... Fuck. Fuck. Fuck." When you realise that you forgot to backup the test database 😂2

Started this day great with the mention that a coworkers contract isn’t suspended.
In August?
Thats in freaking 6 months. Workload is already fucking insane, and STILL you fucking decide to fucking fire another fucking person from YOUR fucking company.
This has been the 5th i think and my contract is due to July. If it is prolonged i’m thinking of screwing this company over my going away myself. Bunch of mother fucking idiots.
Ended the day great as well.
Heard that a new person is going for lead promotion. Haha.
He has been here for only two months. :,)
Left and right projects are exploding meanwhile i’m in the middle trying to cut the right wire! -
This guy... starts at 11. Ends at 16:00... And i’m supposed to work with him while my day is 9-17. No communication whatsoever. Great. Fucking great. Im boring my brains out meanwhile.1

Today I tried to make an asp.net app and publish it to iis all without the help of Visual Studio. This is teribly difficult!
Then I had a great idea for website to store my .ppt and .doc files (and other school shit) with mongodb and tried node.js as backend. Holy shit did I really host everything all in 10 lines of js!?!?!!! Comment some great tutorials. -
A colleague is walking me trough some of the source code because we try to fix an issue.
colleague: Oh we don't use this anymore

PS: fix will be posted Later.3 -
Wtf is this? I searched for my problem and have to pay money to see the answer an 'expert' gave to another user who needed help? And I don't even know if it would solve my problem. That's definitely a great marketing strategy.

The post-filter algorithm on devrant is really great I'll have to admit it!
Each related posts are aligned in sequence regardless of their tags.
Could this be image meta-data comparison? How does it...?2 -
So I just found out the hard way, that you can't take screenshots, which is great if you want to enforce privacy, but not so great if you want to treasure some of the most awesome comments you find in this community.
Is there a possibility to add a feature like favorite comments?14 -
And another one bites the dust. This is colleague number 5 this year. So far only one person got a replacement. Great that all the rest of us get more workload to handle.
Meanwhile i overheard the manager make a sarcastic comment about developers like “who needs developers”.
Good thing my crypto savings are gaining atm. I’m giving this company another year. Max.2 -
This is really awesome ! First time I saw devRant I thought that hardly anyone is checking this out but with every day I see so many new, great rants !2

Every single time I present a tool for data visualization:
"Oh that's great! Have you considered integrating it with service XYZ? It would be great to see the data from XYZ alongside this."
The answer I would like to give:
"No, you retard! Nobody gives a fuck about your crappy service! Nobody uses it, not even your own team! This is the 10th service that I've been asked to integrate and I don't have time to dig into the details of yet-another-shit. If you have time to waste, please go ahead but don't bother me."2 -
I love python, but a short way to enforce interfaces on arguments would be great. I mean, this is the third function where type checking is longer than the actual body.1

"The thing I want to change is very simple.."

I really want 2017 to be a great year...
One thing I do is have a movie marathon ... Last few years I did the Hobbit movies ...
I can't think what to do to start of this year 🤔
I'm already building this site ... For new year's day but I dunno what to watch to get me in the spirit , any suggestions ?5 -
So... This is the deal... I'm currently working part time (15 hours a week) while studying. We have a pretty hectic week at school and my boss is in the states. He told me I could take the week off. Great!
I now have a mailbox close to exploding and 20+ hours of work that has to be done this week. Bye bye weekend -
Maybe this is naive, but I feel if an application/feature is strategically important to a company, at least two developers should always be assigned to support it routinely. This great resignation is no joke, and I’m getting tired of being the last man standing here. I’m too old for this shit.8

Had a task of service discovery, went through following phases:
1. UDP broadcast
2. Wait why not Bonjour?
3. JmDNS for desktop works great
4. Android NSD on Lollipop, this is easy
5. Kitkat WTF..!! Why did you put it there when it's so buggy.
6. Replaced Android NSD with JmDNS and it's great
7. Network switching on Android... done
8. Wait how are others doing it.. JmmDNS.. awesome.. fuck not working...
9. Read mDNSJava is much faster... replace JmDNS.. why haven't they uploaded parent pom on repo
10. mDNSJava freezing my Android device... revert to JmDNS
11. Let's see if it works with Wifi Direct.... Come on why aren't you working...
12. UDP broadcast it is 😢2 -
I do not work developing, besides this is really a passion for me. Said that, today I was talking with my boss.
Boss: Your idea is great, I love this tool you made.
Me: Thank you, I just need to finish some details, this last dramatic change in our structure messed up with a lot of things.
Boss: Yes, I have some ideas to we code more.
Me: Great! I love development! We can do ...
Boss: No, we can use your time with other things as it is more expensive. I'm going to get a boy still in college to develop.3 -
"You send an email this morning that you're going to reset the firewall, is there anything I can help with?"
"Well a good blowjob would be of great assistance" -
Great how I’ve just started a new job, haven’t been given all the licenses I need to run the software, there are multiple products with little to no documentation (and by none I mean the word “Architecture” is all there is in one of the main products ReadMe file) and I’ve a year of this! How is a company that’s this big not in any way documented like! This is gonna be long 😑2

In the latest update of firefox, the dev console shows all tabs as labels instead of the icons that never really made any sense to me, and in Swedish too! This is a great improvement, I love it! :)1

Finally got round to signing up to a VPN for my devices and my sons. After a lot of research decided on surfshark, signed up for 3 years with great discounts. BUT, it doesn’t work on iPhone ( tried everything in the help) still bollox. Cancelled it and went for my second choice which was Nord. The software is great. Worked without issue, same on m1 mac. Thousands of servers worldwide. For me this is great and fast. So if you are looking for a fast reliable VPN Nord is the one. PS not affiliated or work for Nord, just an opinion and hopefully save someone else some grief.12

Yes ! Just copy paste an entire fucking react dashboard into our NextJs project !
But don't stop there mate. Fuck up your branch and mine too to a point even gitkraken can't tell me exactly what fucking operations you did.
This is my first Next project and my first time working with this new client and it's going tits up in less than a month. Fucking great job.3 -
I'm a beginner in the programming world and I know this is kinda crazy. But how great is the idea of me specializing in C++(not saying just that) ? Will I have a lot of scope? I'm already learning frameworks like qt. So am I wasting my time? Thought I should hear from ppl in the field already. Thanks9
-
I could use some advice. Immagine this: you recently started a new job where the people are great, the product is pretty cool and pay is good. But the code you have to work with is the biggest pile of shite you've ever seen and your manager does not want to change any of this, even after you suggest you would build something that would be a thousand times better, not only "code wise" but for the users too. What would you do?9

Devrant isn't like twitter where every fucking tweet is either a recycled tweet or fucking irrelevant to your life. This is a good app for a change. I mean you can ask industry questions here and get great answers and insights unlike twitter where everybody wants to be savage. Maybe I shouldn't even compare the two in the first place but fr twitter is bullshit2

So this is about one assignment I had in my first programming class in university, I had a group which had 3 members, one saw the assignment and just quit, the other was always saying, "I Know what we have to do to complete this exercise" and I was like "great, then do it"...
Seconds later he just didn't do anything like "WT* man"2 -

My favorite line he said is " In effort to evaluate betn mediocre programmer from great programmer certification available is pathetic, this is why Alien don't come to visit us anymore".
He also talks about RubberDuck and many more. -

My sis wants to career switch into being a dev.
Sis is a kindergarden teacher (great credentials, went through a rigorous program for all the best certs), divorced last year, has a 5 year old. She's a single mom making less than 30k, in Portland, OR -- not great. She's also just started her career/finished school this past year.
Trouble is, sis can be a bit unrealistic about plans at first. She "heard from some people" about making 50k+ starting wage after a coding boot camp. She wants to do this by the end of the summer -- she's never coded in her life.
I can't advise her; I'm in my undergrad c++ courses and I don't know the industry, but my gut tells me this is a bad idea.
Please advise.8 -
Have you ever experienced receiving this type of footer in mail?

I've had this idea for some time now. How about a website that gathers some of the most well written open-source code and allows you to easily read it for educational purposes? Everyone says that reading source code can be a great learning tool but directly jumping into github is not very friendly to newcomers. I saw what underscore.js has done with the annotated code link and I think it's great. What do you think?6

This Collab thing is so interesting. I have come back to devRant after a long time and its so very nice to see some insane ideas floating around here. This app is not only about Rants now it is a world of its own. Great work David !!4

How "commented" is your org's codebase?
I joined this company a few months ago, and I've yet to see a single comment explaining how/why some code (doesn't) work.
It's a great company for the most part, this just seems to be the standard practice here and I'm wondering how many more like it are out there.9 -
To the guy who made the chrome extension for DevRant, please make a back button. Everytime I read a comment I need to go back at the top of the news feed, which is kind of annoying.
Despite this - great job and thank you1 -
Since the issue is within the legacy backend data, this brings us the great opportunity to solve and sanitize the data on the frontend and therefore killing the performance of the application! Sincerely, a manager that doesn't give a shit3

Hi I just joined this great Community and here is my thoughts about programming tap "++" if you agree if not then change your mind.
For me programming is like becoming wizard of next generation. Like wizard you can control or create anything because in future you will find electronics containing programs written by a wizard (programmer). We are not people who can repair computer but greater then that because a pc is just a box without programs (software)
You are reading this article because you loves challenges and you are hard working too.1 -
I’d like to have a DevRant dataset so I can make some great visualizations, text analysis, etc. of the things we hate the most. This is top priority, thanks in advance.5

New job had me working on a Mac.. great! Let's give this a shot and see what the fuss is about.
One year later and I can now knowledgeably say that macOS is balls slow, the worst Unix I've used day to day, Debian/Ubuntu 4 lyf.1 -
Got offered great opportunity to learn x86 for Linux from someone with years of experience. Happily accepted. Later realized this is eerily similar to the beginning of a horror movie.7

I have an internship at some research company. My point is making face recognition apps with prog lang I know. This place is awesome. Well, compsci it's not my background, but I met many people. And they are great at math ....
.....
... Like they do 29 gray-scale images as a vector for PCA algorithm with size 64x64 pixel and COUNT A COVARIANCE MATRIXES WITHOUT TOUCHING ANY CALCULATOR OR PEN AND PAPER AND GET THE RIGHT NUMBER!
Man, this is insane. I don't even know 64x64. I love compsci1 -
That is one thing I hate:
Every second programming tutorial in Youtube is made by Hindu, and unfortunately their spelling is not so good. That is why learning from this tutorial becomes twice difficult and ridiculously funny...
I need a function of searching only videos with great spelling XD
P.S. It's not question of nation, but of spelling12 -
This company is giving me such a great offer, i would be able buy 2 i phones and will still have a lot of "exposure" left2

Just taken on a new client through my own business. Great news! They pay well, everything seems to run smoothly and they're a great team.
They gave me access to their Gitlab repos and all looked well...until...no branches! They have zero branches to determine what is the current live distributed project, dev project or any of the various other reasons. I don't often use git but this really bugs me!7 -
I hate that i feel like I should be coming up with the next great tech innovation just because I'm in the industry. The onus is put on us to create the next Facebook and make a success of it, when no one would expect an electrician to create the next light bulb or a store worker to create the next great product. Why do we put this pressure on ourselves?rant startup tech developer devrant pressure success we can't all be the next zuckerburg random idea1

Did some analysis on some servers that a partner of ours is hosting:

-TLS_RSA_WITH_RC4_128_SHA preferred Cipher Suite for ALL TLS Versions.
I almost barfed at my desk.4 -
So after having a rather shit day at work I notice that my phone (samsung s7 edge) is at 50% and indecide to fast charge it...then i notice it "Fast charging, 55 minutes till ready" great....fucking....great. please don't tell me that the battery is fuckd up...i really do not need this

Working with others is always a great way to improve, no matter their skill.

They're better than you, you get to learn new things
They're worse than you, you get to learn how to be a better leader.
Rest assured, folks.

Not everyone will know this guy. But the ppl who know what he is responsible for ... will agree ;) -
I assigned work to my minions aka Jr. Devs for the first time. Feels great. Is this what being a CEO feels like?5
-
Time to face the truth.
I'm being moved from one team to another. Which is great.
But the reason I'm being moved is to take over for another dev. So that dev can get a promotion. So basically I'm getting a promotion, without the pay raise.
I can't fight this either.
So I'll take this as an opportunity to get all the experience. Also begin looking around.1 -
Wow! My rights to merge work is just revoked. This is fucking bullshit. Whenever i want to merge my work the project lead has to do it. And when he’s sick ill have to go to the fe lead, who is in meetings 24/7. Fucking great2

It is always great when I download a major release of a software I love and it only gets better.
1Password new version is exactly that. It took a great product and made it better integrated with the laptops I use every day.
Not really ranting... but I wish this happened more often. -
After 6 weeks of coding in VBA (Excel's integrated IDE) the project is nearly finished. When I updated BossMan on it he said "This is really great. I can see the team using this. Is it possible to put it online and have the interface be on the website?"
.... I don't know what to say. This was my initial protest about using VBA but I wasn't vocal enough. Guess what my next project is.
You're right.. porting 2.5k thousand lines of VBA into some form of WebApp.
While I'm exited at the prospect of using a real IDE again I'm angry that I didn't start this was from the beginning.5 -
Stackoverflow is great but sometimes I want to ask 'bad' questions. Questions that cannot be answered. I just want to see opinions no matter how biased. Maybe this is the place? Or is there somewhere else?
btw anyone know if there is any is a decent free ui for mongoDB that works with Atlas?2 -
I am a programming teacher in a local university, I started five years ago, but in this semester I feel very tired, the students don't want to learn. I tray many methodologies and practical protects but the interest show by they is very low. the worst thing is that in anonymous evaluation I get good score but my objective is that students become in a great programmers ¿any advice?2

"So... you know SQL? Great!! Here, I have this project for you to fix a few things."
"What is it?", you ask... SSIS packages and stuff!
Where do I start??!! -
We have a (huge) project being converted from cpp to cs. This is done by another company.
We wanted them to also create unit tests for the cs version and they recommended MbUnit and Gallio.
I know a few libraries but didn't know MbUnit. All fine, I learn quick. Also MbUnit works like a charm
But then... I recently switched to VS2015 and somehow I couldn't get my unit tests to work. Turns out it doesn't support the compiler from VS2015. Also MbUnit stopped in 2013 T_T
Guess I have to stick with VS2012 for this project then.
Great start of 2017
Nothing bad to the guys in Belarus, though! They deliver great work!
If you read this, keep up the good work!
Rant on -
Just dug up a project I abandoned half a year ago. This is so fucking bloated that I'll probably need about a weekend to see if it's at least acceptable to deploy security-wise.
Just. Fucking. Great.
Also, hello, world!1 -
Why is it so easy to just keeping thinking to yourself, I really want to do this project. Then literally never want to actually touch it, so many great ideas filling up multiple text files strewn between devices. Stupid motivation.
-
Why does the Fat Free Frameworks (F3) $db->exec() method have its array count from 1 and not 0.
Instead of doing:
[$param1, $param2]
You have to do:
[ 1=> $param1, 2=> $param2]
WHO THE FUCK THOUGHT THAT WOULD BE A GREAT IDEA?
This is something that PHP PDO gets right, AND I FUCKING HATE PDO!!!4 -
What's your thoughts on the newly released .app tld? Is it going to be the new .io?
It also seems like Google provides TLS certificates for free to all .app domains. I know there's let's encrypt but I still think that this is great. Google is really pushing a more "Secure" internet. -
How many started of development as a hobby and will to create something awesome and then got soaked into is so much that at a later stage in life you are really not left with any option because you invested all your time and health into sitting front of computers ? This is serious question and it would be great if someone experienced, like who is in their late twenties or thirties answer it !7

With all this AI generative stuff I feel pretty ok with having done an exit from actual coding work some time back. (I know there is infinite work left but anyways…)
And…
YOU FUCKING IMBECIL FRONTENDERS. MAKE BACK WORK! PERSIST THE FUCKING VERTICAL SCROLL POSITION!!! MAKE WEB GREAT AGAIN!!! #MWGA2 -
Once and a while a smarty pants developer I like will mention something and I'll assume they use it often and have vetted it. In this case, I'm pretty sure the person only used WordPress Pods once on some very specific thing - because after digging into it and using it on a project, I can't imagine this being a good idea... This is definitely its own path... It sure is a lot of extra work to get some basic relationships going. I'm sure it's great for some people, but for me - it's a lot of fighting what is supposed to be helpful.1
-
I had this great fun idea and i started programming immediatly. Yes! i'm feeling great and this is going to be amazing!
But Oh! then i had this amazing and super fun idea! It's almost the same, although it requires me to make massive changes to the code... Ok, no problem, i can do this. It's my project and it's fun. This is going to be great!
But then... FUCK2 -
This is a story of a lovely lady.
she had several clips of bills stuffed in her dress
and a frustrated programmer
found that they were there where I had pressed.. them.
now heres a story of a crap economy that gave quite more than a hunch that to hang on to your well paying shit job, gets their panties in a great big bunch
a great big bunch a great big bunch
keep your job and in their nuts
they feel a punch :P
now dont you chase no, brand new techy, most of it for complete suckers. by the time that its usuable, the company that made it gave up :P
it gave up
it just gave up
if it was real in the first place at all it just gave up :P34 -
Weekend is coming friends! I just found a great life lesson for you. This video is dubbed in English only for you. Please do see this video. Spare some (2hr)time from your day and click this link.

Hmm, this front-end framework looks great, it would be a shame if... "the latest version of jQuery is required"... Well, fuck you then, let's see the next one.
My day in a nutshell. -

Pretty good explanation of why emacs is great. I was an evangelical vim user until I came to realise these points.
TL;DR main point:
The editor is second to the powerful and extensible underlying runtime, that makes extensions far easier to make and thus provides a better ecosystem. Although neovim is making strides to fix this5 -
My heart has skipped a beat..
I like to do front end in Angular, and Im learning asp.net core, so this is great for me.2 -
Woow. Thank you. This is a great information for my production system.
(Obviously I'm ironic)
Php version: 5.6
File: php.ini3 -
Got this mail from a recruiter:
"I thought I would reach out to you as I have a client working that is looking for 3 Senior Developers with strong PHP experience and either Smyfony, Laraval or Drupal experience ..."
I have heard that Laraval and Smyfony are great frameworks.3 -
I think one of the great things about this app is how we handle bug reporting. Any time someone posts about a bug, people independently do extensive tests to determine the extent of the bug (or at least what devices are affected), and people nearly always give detailed replication steps. I think this is a great feature of this community1
-
I pitched this crazy sentiment analysis story and it got approved.
Which is great... only now, I have to start learning regular expressions to tokenize my data. Regular Expressions are the worst. 😒5 -
"Hey, I think you'd be a great fit for this great startup we're doing. The work is all PHP."
"Umm, I don't have any PHP experience on my resume. And I never want to."
"Are you sure? We think you'd fit in great over here? " -
This is great. I get to talk shit about idiots I work with. Have a guy who still thinks Tape Backup is a good solution2
-
I sadly don't remember who set this up and posted it on devRant (give me a distro) but it seems to be down :/
Would be glad to host it again if needed, I think it is a great idea. ^^5 -
How many projects is too many projects to single-handedly develop for a company as an intern?
This place I'm at fam! The fucktards won't even offer me a job, yet they're trying to put me on a 3rd & 4th system, after single-handedly delivering 2 projects already that met their expectations. A recommendation letter is great, but what I want/need is a fucking job!2 -
Hello technical people. This article was a great read.
It talks about innovation, outsourcing and whether your company is turning into a zombie company with contracts.

Dependabot neither supports pnpm nor yarn:
https://github.com/dependabot/...
https://github.com/dependabot/...
The intention from GitHub is clear, Microsoft acquired npm and the fancy new supply-chain-security is just a lousy way of walling people inside the ecosystem.
GitHub is great, github.dev is amazing, VS Code is sick. But no, this one guy of Isaac Schlueter makes me hate this whole supply chain.
pnpm, renovatebot and GitLab: I choose you!4 -
I'm currently working on a polyfill for backdrop filters. It's going great so far, stuff like backdrop blur is just so awesome fur UIs! The polyfill will be compatible with WebComponents, :hover, :active..., transitions and scrolling/resizing. Would you have use cases for this?4

Nearing the end of my holiday in this fantastic city that is Warsaw, Poland. Great place, lots to see and do. No computer only my phone, too scared to look at emails. Fuck them, everyone needs a break and change of environment. 👍🏼

This is such a great relief from my student life and I'm sure brings smiles to fellow software devs when working. Thank you devRant!
-
I don't know if you guys know this one, but here is a great place to visit and find useful tools, products, apps ...
https://www.producthunt.com
devRant is already there :D4 -
This type of data scientist are the worst of them all. The lesson he is giving on this ost is, "I am great." But keep a look at his post, he have not even followed basic syntax rule.3

So i'm currently an IGCSE student, and i learn programming as a hobby, but this year is the graduation year and i took all the subjects necessary for The Faculty of Computer Science, but i wanted some advice from the people working in this field, so is it a great job with good income? and are thier many job oppurtinities out there on the market? And finally which is better Software engineering or CS?
Thanks for your time.5 -
I'm an alien.
I've never told anyone this before, so please keep it a secret.
This is why I'm so fucking great when it comes to programming.4 -
Been waiting for pur internet to get set up for a while now. We've finallu beem connected. Initially we thought we'd be stuck on a ADSL2+ connection with a max possible download speed of 20Mbps. Then we found out we could get cable through a different ISP, so we went with that. We were expecting a decent downloas but not this... this is just great!11
-
Ionic-capacitor is just a plugin paywall
They want you to get stuck when using capacitor plugins, they've eliminated the configurations for these plugins so you get stuck and pay for their shitty closed-source plugins.
Don't fall into this trap, don't ever use Ionic capacitor, stick to react-native or even flutter.
If you are going web, then Ionic is great3 -
I’ve seen so many rants on here about people wanting things for free for whatever reason.
While devrant is great, I think this is the best rant on the subject ever.

For anyone with kids, this is a great way to teach them about coding.

LinkedIn is like the Instagram for career dudes, what kind of bootlickery is this?!
some post and comments are just cringe
we know he is a great guy or they are a great company, what is all this poetry for?3 -
why do we do this to ourselves. Create an VM that is accessible via rdp. It souds great isn't it? Until some FUCKFACE CO-WORKER STEALS YOUR FUCKING RDP EVERY GODDAMN TIME. FFFFUUUCCCKKK1

Why does my Android camera app mirror my selfies, and why again, as I already turned this off some time ago. Only noticed when there was a sign in the background. Annoying misfeature, wtf (yes, please tell me why this is a great feature for you, this might actually make me happier)2

Client keeps contacting me telling me customers are having issues purchasing tickets (events site). Stripe is picking up potential fraudulent activity (high risk).
We know the people who are trying to buy, and they're genuine. Anyone else having issues like this?
It's not happening a great deal, I would say maybe 1 in 20 times.2 -
Did a dual boot of Fedora XFCE with an existing Xubuntu installation in my laptop.
Things are great but the battery consumption of Fedora is too high when compared with Xubuntu.
I already installed tlp before doing this test.
So is there anything else that i could do to reduce the power consumption..?2 -
Too much googling.
This is a great skkll and I know it leads you to amazing links and resources, but currently i have a list of things to work upon and it has crossed a timespan of next 2 years!! -
We need to go live by this month 10.
Yep, infra is ready in production. You can push the events and see the results right away.
PM: Wow, great. Setup staging we need to test it.
Me: FML, staging machines are smaller, can't even start the program.1 -
"Sometimes I’m amazed that I spend my days creating magic and fantasy and that people buy it. It’s like connecting with the inner child in me; I’m just having a great time, and I’m chuckling to myself that this is really happening, that I can do this with my life." - Lita Albuquerque

In the middle of a deployment call and the dev wants to "add a feature" on the fly (what could go wrong right!?). Next thing I here on our phone call is the client saying "great idea let's add that feature now! I'll wait to test!" Wait... WHAT THE FUCK is the client doing on this deployment call?!1

Corona virus: we will make America great again!
Makes sense, doesn't it?
[this post is not intended to be political - just an observation]11 -
New year, new Google HashCode!!!
I need a new stupid name for my team, last year "SicroMoft" by @Fast-Nop was great, but this time I need something even better (or worse)
Also, who else is participating?6 -
I just wanted to say that most rants I saw today were great. Loads of original pics and good stories. This, while others think devRant is becoming more and more of just a repost forum. Any thoughts?1
-
I need a package repository and I find jfrog artifactory. Seems great, except the OSS version is utterly useless. The pro version is overpriced, and does not support s3 buckets and the Enterprise version is >25k/year, just to store a half dozen npm and PHP packages on s3 storage? Are you fucking kidding me???
How can companies justify this much money for a package manager?9 -
HAI >o<
it's great that this community is alive after so many years. i hope this is the last account i have to create (i create one every two years, make 10 posts and leave it).
how are you all?1 -
Just wasted two hours finding out why one of our clients rest API is not working. Apparently it needs a referer header for no good reason and this is no where to be found in the documentation...
It is great that you even have documentation, but please include all basic details!! -
Oh yeah, I wanna rant... What is this awful image compression on DevRant?! A lot of time, images posted by ranters are illegible if they contains text. If we are lucky enough, the ranter will then post an Imgur, else... It would be really great to get an image quality equal to DevRant quality... Please!2

so.. k
my name is not my name and i'm only 40 years old and its really 2022 ! I give ! Or Take or whatever ! and the world is fine, and people are great and none of this happened before ! can I do something different now or could all of you fucking fucks ?3 -
This is very annoying. Even more annoying because everything appears to be working great other than this ugly malformed error message:

What are some examples of really large javascript projects that are not frameworks themselves ?
I ask this because a video suggested typescript is great for large complex projects, but... I wouldn't ever use a js backended language to code a 'large' project.6 -

Just cut down registration from 5s api response (because its sending email confirmation) into 70ms using rabbitmq (emails are now delegated in rabbit queue and sent whenever the queue takes place)
But still around 70ms to register which is great and fast (because it also generates jwt token and returns the whole user object + jwt) so its difficult to keep this at 7-9ms response time
Is this normal and is it fine to leave it at 70 or can this be optimized (or should it be)?7 -
I am a technical writer. I have good knowledge of Node and Angularjs so my all blogs are related to these technologies. But now, I want to write something related to online food delivery services. This business is in demand at this time and mobile application is the reason. Any advice or suggestions related to online food delivery mobile app development would be great for me.
Currently, I am collecting some information through this resource https://iglobsyn.com/on-demand-food...
