Boss - gives tasks to me. Timeline: 10 days.
Me - work hard and finish the solution in 3 days.
Boss- wtf is this. Do it properly.
Me - chills for 15 days. Submit the same earlier solution after that.
Boss - yes this looks nice now! Much better than your earlier work!
Me - dude seriously what kind of stuff do you smoke before coming to work?10 -
Friend: Hey, can you fix my laptop? The hard drive is almost full.
Me: (Looking through his folders) Maybe it's because of this. Why do you have 3000+ files in your downloads folder? Maybe I should delete some of this.
Friend: No no, please don't touch the downloads folder, I have some very important documents there.
Me: Why don't you move them to a separate folder then? You should organize the ones you actually need and delete the rest. This folder is a complete mess.
Friend: No no, the problem is not the downloads folder, there must be something else. Can't you just uninstall some programs to free up space?
Me: I could, but I don't know which ones you actually use.
Friend: What? You should know!! You studied computer science for this!!
Me: First of all, there is not a single class in the whole 4 years of university called "How to uninstall programs and free up space on 128GB hard drives of shitty €400 computers". Second of all, I don't know why you were expecting me to find a magic button on your laptop that immediately frees up all the space in a hard drive without actually deleting anything. That's not how computers work, you know.
Friend: Hey if you didn't want to help me you could have said so in the first place.
Me: FML18 -
The worst part about devRant is the inability to explain to non-devs why I'm laughing so hard at something.
This is also the best part.2 -
Love how a teacher of mine described IO wait for CPUs on a blackboard.
"That's calculation time." *draws three small lines on the blackboard* And this is IO wait. *draws a really long line, goes out of the class, out of the school, comes back* "Yes, this is IO wait. No matter how good and fast your CPU in your gaming PC is, if your hard drive is shit, everything is shit."5 -
Whenever the PM is pushing us to work "extra hard" on projects I usually drop this in the company slack channel 😁24
-
Boss assigned me a task on Google Docs:
Boss: "Please remove this line"
Me: "What!? You're already there! How hard is it to fucking select the fucking sentence with your fucking touchpad and press the fucking delete key on your fucking keyboard!? Why assign me with such a fucking waste of time and fucking trivial task!?"16 -
My worst dev sin is not throwing people under the bus, even when they deserve it.
Literally or metaphorically? I'll leave that up to the imagination.
------
I believe my second-worst sin is my tendency towards perfectionism. It's hard to finish projects quickly if everything has to be nearly perfect. I still make deadlines, but this is due to overworking, thus leading to burnout.
I could relax more if only I sacrificed my principles...5 -
*pops open some Chinese USB Bluetooth dongle*
*finds a chip inside that seems to be a controller*
"Google, what's the datasheet for this thing?"
> Your search - 653uw1f1 - did not match any documents.
I'm doomed... 😟
Finding Easter eggs is hard you say? Try a datasheet 😑35 -
Instructor: "Alright you fresh meat, you're gonna do natural logarithm, factorial, and 2 to the power of N in C++"
My classmates: "Omg this is so hard"
Me:8 -
Was watching a Chinese movie and there's a scene where someone is getting hacked, and this is the fucking code that they are show as the "hacking code". How hard would it have been to find something more legitimate than this?
If I hadn't had a few $0.69 hamburgers from McDonald's today, I would be more upset.14 -
if (someCondition) {
doSomething();
} else {
// THIS SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN
}
Saw this in our repo the other day, face palmed so hard that my face is now a palm.6 -
PM: Please get this done by tomorrow. It's just a small change.
Dev: No its not that simple.
PM: Why is it not simple? Please explain so I can understand.
Dev after a hard thought finally explains: blah blah blah
PM: Well, we have promised the client so please do this by tomorrow, thanks.
Dev: *bangwall9 -
Dear backend dev:
No data is not an error for fuck sake. Don't want 404, or messages if the search criteria filters out all values. Give me a empty array.
Is this hard to understand that we need a team meeting to discuss?
Godamit12 -
It's so fuckin hard to work with people who don't get sarcasm or humour.
The UI guy gives me design (which is a regular design, not something unique)
Me: “wow fresh and unique design (obviously sarcasm).”
Designer: “thanks, I worked on this whole day. Glad you like it.”
Me: “huh...”
Now I feel like a terrible person.6 -
Spoke to a programmering student who insists on writing his Java and python code in PARAGRAPH format, like an essay (the teachers do not teach this). Tried to explain why this is a bad idea. He explains to me that if others can't read his code that it is their problem and that he would never make a silly syntax error like missing a semicolon or a bracket. Called me stupid and walked off.
Life will be hard for him.10 -
After weeks of hard work creating a website:
It looks so beautiful 😭
*opens in a different browser*
WHAT THE HECK! why is all my divs flying here and there !
*opens in mobile*
f*#k this9 -
C is not that hard:
void (* (* f[ ]) () ) () declares f to be array of unspecified size, of pointers to functions, which return pointers to functions which return void.
By the way, I am uncomfortable with the fact that I am comfortable with this statement.6 -
So I tried to start learning Spring 5
How the fuck do you guys do it? Holy shit.
30 seconds in:
"Spring really isn't hard, you start with this request handler interacting with a view parser..."
Alright, sounds good
2 minutes in:
"So in order to use SpringResponseDriverActionHandlerServiceRequesterService you'll need to import com.org.java.spring.util.driver.comagain.request.response.request.drivers and include this 37 level deep nested XML property and finally extend this abstract class and implement it over an iterable list with this specific annotation aaaaaaand.... Done"
> Hello, world!
"See, spring is easy!"11 -
This is my computer workstation.
The computer has 8 GB of DDR3 RAM, a Radeon R5 graphics card and soon I will add an SSD hard disk on which I will install the operating systems.15 -
Can we talk about changelogs for a second?
Almost every major app in the play store has changelogs like "Improving your experience" or "We did some changes to enhance your experience".
Wtf is this bullshit. Is it that hard to write the actual changes in the changelogs so that I know what got changed, huh?
Guess its kinda hard to write " We are shoving more telemetry crap down your throat" in a changelog.
Fuck sake.14 -
Me: well guys, after the 4th attempt and a week of waiting, I’ve gotten a response from the remote backend team about the errors affecting this release. Which are the same issues affecting the last release 2 months ago. The findings are: “there is in fact some issue with the API”.
I’d like to thank everyone who put in so much effort to get us to this momentous step forward. We can expect a fix any year now.
*equally sarcastic colleague on another team listening in*:
oh wow, this months long thing has just been “some issue” all this time? Well that’s fantastic. You should mark the ticket as “done” and reply “thank you” for all their hard work.
..... I laughed so hard at how ridiculous all this is and the joke, that I nearly did, hoping someone from product/business would have to review it1 -
Websites that do this.
Is there a good reason for this? What, you can't strip out the spaces yourself?
Honorary mention: my local council's bin collection schedule website. Says "Invalid post code" if you enter it without spaces (eg, it rejects E123BC, you have to enter E12 3BC).
Dealing with space characters must be really really hard for web developers. Maybe someone should make yet another js framework for that?16 -
"To use the clock you need Adobe Flash"
Really 1&1? You really need flash to show a fucking clock? Its not that hard to do this in javascript, or? Even if it is an analog clock :D There is even a tutorial of the "quality content page" w3schools about implementing this in javascript ... just whyyyyyyy? it 2018, not 2004.
(1&1 is an german ISP. This message occured in their webmailer using it without flash.)6 -
Why it is hard for general public to believe this is fake;
Nasa had performed an experiment in which they got this result an internal network 😂😂😂;
For God sake please don't try seeding torrents on NASA'S internal network 😂😂😂😂;3 -
Today the lead developer and I where loling and wtfing hard to the following code:
if ($looked_column == true)
{
$trunca = 1;
}
else
{
$trunca = 1;
}
Mind you, we had no clue why he named the variable $trunca, and even then it had been set at the top of the file as 1 to begin with....was never used up to this line and $looked_column had also a set to true.
This is why a lot of people give php a bad reputation. This right here is why people make fun of php......15 -
Really, I hate this composer / bower / npm shitholes!
Why the hell is my app 300MBs?!? Because that shitty pudding composer decided to download the ENTIRE git including README.md, examples, 5 hours of assembly-giraffe porn, my granny's pajamas and two wraps of kebabs!
How hard is it to define the folder that contains the REQUIRED library so that our project might stay at 5MBs instead of 300?18 -
OK, I've had enough of this bullshit!
Why the hell do some people pronounce 'Z' as 'C' !?!
FUCK THESE PEOPLE!
Now, you might ask yourself: "But how is this tech related?".
WELL... I was trying to get into a server and had someone spell the password for me; AND GUESS WHO MISSPELLED THE PASSWORD THREE FUCKING TIMES SO HE GOT LOCKED OUT OF THE FUCKING SERVER BECAUSE OF THIS SHIT!!!
FUCK . FUCK . FUCK . FUCK . FUCK!!!!!18 -
public String getDbPasswd(){
try{
String dbPasswd = SomeInhouseEncryptionLib.getPasswd("/hard/coded/path/to/key");
return dbPasswd;
} catch(Exception e){

return "the-actual-password";
}
return null;
}
And this is now in production

Making a Package Manager from Scratch is hard.
Making a Scratch-like education coding software in XAML is hard.
Setting up a server with zero knowledge is hard.
Creating a new file extension for my project and making it work is hard.
But, as a student,
studying and coding is the hardest thing.
Same 24 hours for everyone, and I should code as well as study.
Time.
The most precious thing in Earth.

Honestly I gave Apple a chance and bought an iPhone but oh my fucking god i’m going to throw this overpriced piece of horseshit they call a phone so hard at steve job’s grave that CNN is gonna report it as a meteor strike7

If you ever use emojis for variable naming, please do a favor for the whole developer community by formatting your hard drive twice and then never touching a computer again - because you're an idiot.
Seriously though, why Apple? This screenshot is from the official Swift Language documentation...13 -
Broken app is broken again. This app is broken so often and so hard, I'm struggling to give a damn.
These fuckers need to take their shitty project, code and managers especially, and launch them into Mars
They blame us and everyone else for their shit and I'm done with it. I need to sleep and not have these fools call me at all fucking hours.6 -
Supposed to get paid from a project. After all the hard work I submitted the project and this is what the client says:
"Thanks"
😕8 -
This is what Daily Standups turn into when a hard baked Waterfall team is forced to adopt Agile... and the Manager is made the SMaster! 😳☹️😫😭6
-
I didn't expected that devrant could be this good, facebook is just full of spams nowadays and hard to find dedicated people. Thanks @condor for suggesting devrant16
-
As a self taught C programmer starting comp sci in University, WTF is all this object oriented-ness. Constructors, parents, children, inheritance, polymorphism... I feel like more like an anthropologist than a programmer.
(But really, I get why it's better. Just so hard to learn)14 -
I just wrote this piece of code. Without googling. Call me regex king!
But in fact regex is not that hard, you just have to learn the syntax 😄28 -
!rant
I got a promotion at work!
Is it weird that I don't want it because I still feel like I have too much to learn to no longer be a "junior"? I'm happy that my hard work is paying off but I'm worried that this is how bad senior devs are made.7 -
It's weird that this is the community where I'd be posting this, however.
After 16 years of smoking, I tried to quit smoking yesterday.
boi oh boi it is hard 😂 but 2nd day smoke free so far.
From past experiences, I'm almost past the hardest part.
I decided to quit with the first day of lent to have a bit of an extra motivation so if you're into prayer, prayers and good whishes are appreciated10 -
The FCC Chairman is going ahead with his plan to repeal net neutrality despite objections from fellow commissioners, the CTO, more than a hundred members of Congress, senators and of course, the people.
What the fuck is wrong with this guy? How far up your own fucking ass does your head have to be to ignore basically everyone's vote against you? What the fuck. This guy is a really piece of fucking work. I hope this bounces back to bite him in the ass real hard.15 -
Asking a developer for an estimate is like asking a doctor how long it will take to perform an appendectomy.
Making that estimate a hard date is like telling the doctor, "We need this finished in 45min, no matter what... NO MATTER WHAT!"4 -
Manager: we have reached record sales this month, thank you for your hard work guys.
Employee: can I get a raise?
Manager: your greed is hurting the company.
Employee: but I worked here for 3 years8 -
I’m sick of these kinds of error messages. “Could not be downloaded at this time.” Ok...but why? Are the stars out of alignment? Did the CEO of the company decide that every other Tuesday at noon, you can’t download this app?
How hard is it to give a reason in the error message??3 -
I laughed so hard when I saw this post,i don't know how knowing the Microsoft suite is going to help you become anyone famous worldwide and oh.steve jobs main role was not programming but mostly marketing.7
-
I'm a die hard ViM user and throughout the years I managed to put ViM key bindings in everything, from browser to even my cell phone for some reason (back in the day if I had the opportunity to put them in the fridge, I would have put them - people would have a hard time closing the door, though)
The thing is that it had become a liability because I see that, even though I "work really fast and efficiently" using this tool, when I have to use other things, like a different shell (I use zsh with some ViM sauce) or type in another editor, it sucks so hard.
Everything is wrong, nothing works, the typing is a mess.
Now I'm trying to force myself to use Vscode and I removed all those extensions from my browser and shell. It is uncomfortable, but the idea is to "rewire my muscle memory", if there is such thing.
Yeah.8 -
I know this is just an ad, but who the fuck attaches a hard drive disk directly to a FUCKING oscilloscope?6
-
Manager: This dropdown is hard to use on mobile
Dev: I thought building this for mobile wasn’t in the scope?
Manager: I changed my mind. It’s a lot easier for me to test on mobile so just rework it so it works on mobile. But only for testing.
Dev: How about I make the dropdown a rotary dial instead?
Manager: Good idea!
Dev: …9 -
If living and working in the UK wasn't hard enough as is for a student. This now happens and has, pretty much, screwed everything over.
Promoted lies, PM stepping down, value of pound dropping.
All going great! ☺️🔫4 -
Me: How can I delete pushed commits from origin?
Colleague: Just do git reset --hard and then git push -f
Me: But this is dangerous
Colleague: Wait, I'll do it myself
Colleague: Done
Me: But nothing happened
Colleague: Fuck. I just removed all changes on my own branch2 -
The amount of battery on my phone is inversely proportional to how hard I haven't been working throughout the day. I'll tell you more about this problem once my phone's dead

Seriously? How hard is it for people to do one simple thing. You spell it out for them, and they still find the inability to do their job. This is RIDICULOUS!! 😡2
-
Management: Create [totally idiotic and complicated feature, near to impossible to create]
Me: that's close to impossible and could probably destroy some other parts of the application.
Management: well, then your application is poorly programmed.
DAFUQ? HOW DARE TO JUDGE THE QUALITY OF MY CODE WITHOUT EVEN ABLE TO READ 2 LINES OF CSS? WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK IS THIS?
I'm really not easily offended but this sentence hit really hard.4 -
Just wanted to leave a little encouragement that can be hard to find on a 'rant' board: As a 40 year old dev doing this for 16 or more years... I'm not jaded, I still have a burning enthusiasm for software dev, I'm lucky to be able to pursue this career. Have I been in some shitty situations and health damaging levels of stress? Yes at times, and I've ranted about them here. This career isn't an easy ride, ultimately there's a reason it's well paid - for all of its physical ease it's mentally and often emotionally hard. But, I still find the highs match the lows, there's still thrill in the chase to make the project and product work right. Only advice I would give is be prepared to shift down a career gear for a while when you have kids. That shit is hard. Keep having fun people, we work with machines that extend and force-multiply our minds, what a time to be alive!9

There are two hard things in computer science: cache invalidation, naming things, and off-by-one errors.
This is really the stuff I have to deal on daily basis. -

It's hard to know WTF is going on in this lame-ass company when everybody else is speaking a different language. 😑5

Someone I know quite well just told me that they have a hard drive with a S.M.A.R.T warning and "the internet says" that he can fix the problem by running this amazing built in windows tool called "chkdsk" (he literally learned about this today, as a long-term windows user) or by reformatting the drive.
I've told him that neither of those methods will work, since it is a hardware fault that is being reported by S.M.A.R.T.
He said that there is hope that it'll work, since someone on the internet said so.
ಠ_ಠ5 -
It's the 21st century. We have this amazing thing called the Internet. It's literally at our finger tips. Any information you want can be found with the tap of a phone screen, and the information will be presented to you in less than a second.
Why is this concept so fucking hard for people to comprehend? Instead of asking me "How do I write a resignation letter?", search the damn internet for resignation letter guides. Like Jesus Christ, it's not that hard of a concept to comprehend. Especially when you've basically grown up with the internet in our lives. -
So Microsoft, you tell me that there is a known bug, if you have Windows 10 with the newest update installed on a SSD and Apps running on another hard drive?! And this bugs causes random freezes of the whole PC from time to time?
WHAT THE FUCK?!
It is a common setup nowadays to have a SSD with windows 10 and software on other hard drives and you didn't care to check it before releasing the update? Which I HAVE to download and install?
FUCK YOU MICROSOFT!8 -
FUCK, I just realized something..
A lot of people are probably aware of the statement "Respect is earned, not demanded/given".
Now, if you are aware of the meme "Press F to *pay respect*", you probably know where this goes.
The statements "pay respect" and "respect is earned" are actually connected. Just like money, you pay money to people who deserve it. You work hard for it.
But if this is true, is "attention" also earned? I often hear "Please pay attention" from my teachers back then.
This is some big brain shit right here8 -
Me trying to take a screenshot with iOS 12:
*holds home and presses lock* (the only way I had found to reliably take a screenshot in previous versions): Siri
Fuck off Siri I want a screenshot!
*tries again same way*: Siri
Fuck OFF Siri!
*holds lock + home*: phone locks
Christ almighty.
*unlocks phone, presses home and lock at the exact same time*
Nothing happens.
*continues holding* I just want my fucking screenshot.
Phone powers off. Hard reset.
Fuck this shit.
How hard is it to monitor two buttons being pressed at the same time? And if it is so damn hard why make it the ONLY WAY TO TAKE A SCREENSHOT??!
Now whenever I want a screenshot it’s basically a crapshoot whether I will get a screenshot, Siri barging in, or my phone locking on me.
Couldn’t they have just used the volume buttons instead? 😡12 -
Diving into genetic algorithms right now (its 4 am), am i just a rare specimen or is this not hard at all?2

The final verdict is out. After almost 3.5 years im getting fired. Im relieved because i’ve been expecting this already since december. No matter how hard i try my mistakes aren’t excepted anymore.
Good thing there are three other companies i have interviews with.
Let’s hope for a new offer and smooth transition soon!11 -
I came acorss this website
https://joshwcomeau.com/
This is one of the FASTEST loading websites i have ever browsed. The interactivity is so smooth and seamless. No lags or stutters. Reloading the page takes under 0.1 seconds. The dude was so bored he even used click .mp3 sounds as you click or hover over links and buttons
This site is built in nextjs.
I keep seeing more and more nextjs sites. In job search i keep seeing nextjs requirements way more than before.
I cannot believe nextjs is this fast and powerful. It's not even hard to learn.
This motivates me to learn nextjs from a-z now26 -
Helping a friend who's a brilliant at mechanics and has his own patents, and got this question when downloading on his 10Mbit line:
"This was supposed to be a fast computer, so why is it taking so long to download?"
To explain the reason was surprisingly hard, considering that this is a guy who's been invited to give a lecture about innovation at a top tech university.1 -
Oh my fucking god people are stupid, or ignorant, or fucking both.
How hard is it to copy a password from an email and paste that fucker in and press login.
Seriously several times of “this is your email” and “THIS” is your god dam fucking password.
God kill me now.
(No the password isn’t stored in plaintext, I reset it myself before sending it to the user)1 -
I'm currently removing hard-coded DB creds in our modules which is in production. I've thought, this format is the worst:
db_dsn = 'db_dsn_conn_1'
conn = pyodbc.connect('DSN=%s'%(db_dsn))
Behold!!
conn = pyodbc.connect('DSN=db_dsn_conn_1') -
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
Okay, I'm feeling a bit better now.
How to stop being a lil bitch? Why does it seem like everyone got the "don't give a shit" patch except me? I'm working hard on getting my shit together, I've made MASSIVE progress, but everytime I'm feeling good and confident and ready to take the world head-on, I just kinda crumble again with the slightest mishap. This needs to stop. I'm really trying SO hard not to snap. Fucking hell, being aware of all this makes it even worse! It's like I'm two people, one is a downer and REALLY good in draining my brain power, the other is the guy who's typing this and knows that life shouldn't be taken this seriously, but doesn't stay in the cockpit for too long. I'm extremely tired and mad. I just fucking hate this.9 -
YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY IT IS HARD TO GET A JOB AS JUNIOR DEV? This is because you don't need any knowledge about coding to get the fucking degree!!
I would love to work harder but it should meen something if you own the fucking paper!
Sorry got triggerd after reading another rant!8 -
Thanks guys for the help in the last weeks.
This is what I was so hard trying to print.
Btw... reminder to self, plastic expands. That's why the stepper has duck tape instead of screws lol33 -
Adding a commit message is so so hard but you can be creative with it..this is the story of "the fisherman "5

I nearly died 3 years ago. I hate this new, anxious me. Being vulnerable is so fucking hard. Fuck.13

So this happened today.
Trying hard not to judge :/
Later the person also said and I quote:
"It is a markup language or what? We had PHP for that."9 -
Why the fucking hell is it so fucking hard to find an Android phone without a shitty ass UI slapped over it?
Holy fucking shit this is fucking ridiculous.18 -
When your offshore co-worker pronounces your colleagues' names like this :|
Hardik - HARD DICK
Dipesh - DEEP ASS
Pinkesh - PINK ASS
"So DeepAss and PinkAss are handling Backend and Harddick is Frontend right"
Me: right 😁😁 -
User: This web page form is too hard to use and is prone to have wrong data filled out.
Me: Uh...ok. Here is a redesign. You literally fill out one text field and a date picker.
User: Oh this is great, thanks.
*checks the database and the very first entry they created had the wrong date.*
Fuck me.6 -
Qin Chen, a 38 year old facebook employee, recently committed suicide and facebook is trying really hard to hide this.
Apparently he was too stressed out at work and was trying hard to steer things his way, he almost succeeded, but then his manager backstabbed him and left him helpless.
Instead of promoting a better work culture and taking steps against such malpractices at workplace, facebook is trying to hide this incident.
Facebook has to realize that them behaving this way not only insults the departed and his family, but also raises a question that is the life of any of their current employees of any value to facebook, or do they just look at them like workforce and not humans?
Let us not be silent. It was Chen yesterday, it could be any one of us tomorrow.28 -
So, this poor fucker right here has spent 3 hours straight trying to install KDE Neon AGAIN, FOR THE 14TH TIME AS OF TIME OF WRITING on an old 0.5TB hard drive with some GiB-wise partitioning size and apparently the disk doesn't like it.
Can someone give me a dildo so I can fuck myself more because life is not fucking me hard enough? No lube needed kthanksbye11 -
To all frontend webdevs here:
Explain to me how do you cope with all this insane clusterfuckness of frameworks, tools and js libraries.
Why is it so hard for a beginner like me to learn webdev? Android and backend are much more logical and sane. Even Node.js is pretty dope.11 -
Best Hardware support team.
I hope every one of you got such team.
My keyboard was not working properly.
programmer's most used special character ; is auto typing anywhere that is obviously keyboard issue so I called H/W support team.
me: *explained above problem.*
supporter : Ya we know that issue ,YOUR HARD DRIVE IS CORRUPTED. We have 2 option
1) either we can formate your system.
2) We have to change hard drive.
Me thinking : *devrant stuff found*
Me: that is really sad part. How many time you solved such problem?
S: This is my first time in this company ,previously I solved such issue more than 10 time.
Me: you really look smart.
S: thank you,any how I will resolved this issue today.
Me: today I am going earlier but yes we will meet on monday. thank you for quick response.7 -
Out of the blue this morning... little spaced out.
Open terminal. Navigate to my project.
$ svn update
Command 'svn' not found, but can be installed with:
sudo apt install subversion
The fuck is wrong with me? I haven't used svn in like a solid 10 years. Old habits die hard I guess.4 -
Slack is cool and all... But do we really have to have an "account per team" ? Damn I cringed so hard when I was setting up two-factor authentication and realized it was this way... Wtf...6

Making an MVP is hard as hell. It's not even coding that makes it hard, it's knowing when to stop that's so damn difficult. By the time you're ready with something, your brain says "Hey...wouldnt it be great if you added this!" Then you add it, "whoa add this too!"...several days later:
Brain: "The fuck is this, all you needed was that"
😭😭😭7 -
Just switched to Kotlin.. For the first like 10 minutes I was like "What is this shit?!" and then I found Java to Kotlin converter and docs. Yay! Looks like it´s not gonna be that hard to do some apps in it.. Hopefully4

Oh my god my brain is hard wired to write c++ in snake case. Spent 4 years doing it. This code base uses camel case.9

newlifenewhope Update No.1 / Day 2
It's so hard to formulate company's Vision and Mission, even rubber ducks is not helpful. I need my vision to be unambiguous. this will take a while to finalize

Fuck, I only need to hire ONE fullstack developer who fucking knows what he's talking about and not trying to weasel their way into this job. I tell them that there are no annoying managers, no KPI, no bullshit, I thought this is kinda valuable, but no
How hard can it be?25 -
A story from around 2005:
Customer laying out specifications: “We expect this software to need to last 25 years or so, and it will need to keep historical file processing data by dates for at least that long, assume storage is no issue.”
Devs at the time: “look best I can do is support that start with 200 or 201, anything else is really too much to ask. Also understanding how to work with dates at all and not just string manipulation is waaaaayyy hard yo.”
Fuck you lazy motherfuckers. This is why people thought Y2K would be a problem. -
I was assigned to maintain the website as full stack dev but the code from backend is horrible previous devs didn't use SOLID principle, DRY, KISS, or Design patterns. I had to adjust from OOP mindset to Procedural its hard to debug in this state.3

A friend of my mom asks me transfer some files from her hard disk to her pendrive because I am supposedly *good with computers*.
As an obedient son, I go to her house to do the needful.
I switch on the laptop and plug both right in. At this point, I am wondering if this really my life is for.
Lost in my thoughts, I accidentally format her hard disk. Now I freak out. Seeing no possible way out, I remove both and say her work is done.
I quickly leave the house and never look back. To this day, I have never gone back to her house.2 -
CTO for the picture.
This is so real, people are having a bad time because of the covid-19, productivity could be affected by this, my colleagues are having a hard time since they cant realy separate work from work anymore, the situation is hard as it is, i hope we all get through this.
Please Give Loving Comments below so i can show this to my dev/non dev friends that are having a hard time.12 -
I think my hard drive is going to die.
My laptop takes 15 minutes to start up and it takes a fucking long time to open any program but once they're opened they run pretty well... And it does since two weeks ago!
This is a hdd related problem, isn't it?13 -
Being an expatriate, too far from my people..
Being an employee in a sucking company..
Being with responsibilities, husband, soon to be father..
All of this sometimes make me sad and not feeling well
I think life is getting hard for me.17 -
If I write something erroneously on SO because the program or operating system uses it erroneously in the error, don't edit my fucking question to what you think it should be. People who Google for the same error aren't going to find it as a possible fucking solution. How fucking hard is this to understand?1

When I was 14 years old my mom wouldn't buy me a game which was for sixteen years old people. At this point I didn't know how hard programming actually is so I decided to make the game by myself. And now I'm sixteen and in love with programming. (by the way started with C++)2

Sit for hours to figure out obscure bug - oh yes, definitely.
Sir for an hour to do some basic tenth class math - oh my god, this is sooooo hard

Just another day , playing fortnite again . Got my wife frustrated over the past few days , once more today she pulled the plug while i was playing on my PC
I can't take it anymore guys , its so hard to get rid of it .
I mean the wife , yeah. Thank god for divorce . Just filed for divorce ! Yep , I didn't think it would be this hard but I found the one for meself and I'm not going to let her go .
Fortnite I mean.
Jus kiddin, But really what the hell is with all this fortnite divorce stuff..
You don't talk about addictions like weed , or alcohol that make people widow their wives or even kill them but somehow this is trending now and the game is the reason!
Fuck you world , for giving birth to humans. This feels like the fucking stone age damn it . Senseless fuckers spreading news like this undermining all the real fuckery going on.
A world where fortnite causing divorce is news and where drug addictions and related murders and deaths are too mainstream is just stupid.7 -

My project is finally officially launched, it is a though and hard move since it's not yet finished.
Now for the next step, i need to find investors to fund our project. We got our publicity from news media, i hope i can get investors attention.
Nonetheless i'm proud from what i've created. I hope this company last
This is one of the picture from local news post about our launching.14 -

Coworker: I've been working on this computer for an entire day now and it's still having issues
Boss: Well, we can give the client an option to get another SSD and clone to it before reinstalling the OS.
Coworker: But he doens't have an SSD...
Boss: Yes he does
Coworker: *opens computer* let's see, two 1TB hard drives... but no SSD... Oh, there it is. It's hidden. But it's booting too slow to be....
*epiphany*
Coworker: Oh my god. I've been telling the computer to boot to the wrong hard drive. That explains everything!1 -
How are you? I have burning open position, are you interested?
Are you open to the position?
Are you open?
ARE YOU OPEN?
Well how would I know? You didn't tell me literally anything. Why won't they start with tech stack and salary range instead of 20 "how are you messages". Why is it so hard? Why are recruiters so hopeless, I'm never gonna get this how and why this garbage ineffective way of working is tolerated by companies.1 -
Me: "Some kind of algebra library would be really useful for this code/math course I'm doing, but it'd be hard to write"
Python devs: "Is this what you're looking for?"
https://www.sympy.org/en/index.html
Me: Yes. I'm now conflicted, coz on one hand I'm like, "I don't want to use any external hard to use libraries because that's the point of teaching it... But this makes the math easier to understand..."18 -
So I have this idea of a potentially amazing idea but I'm so conflicted as to whether or not it is a good idea (I know it will probably never happen) but it's really hard to put it in writing for people's opinions and input on it...
Anyone else have these moments?7 -
Is apple a fruit? Yes.
Is orange a fruit? Yes.
Is apple an orange? No.
Does apple equal a fruit? No.
Does orange equal a fruit? No.
If you're capable of understanding this, then WHY IS IT IT SO DAMN HARD TO UNDERSTAND 0 == ""?14 -
Was in a meeting with the execs and the boss singles me out and asks me where is this functionality at. I told him the dev working on it will have it ready today. He goes no no no this needs to happen now. I am speechless have no idea how to tell him this employees are working very hard and is doing the very best with the limited time we had. I personally was up at midnight coding to deliver on time. That was the start of my bad day ... crap just pilled on :/1

Brave Browser was found hardcoding referral links to partnered Crypto sites, even if you manually type the URL.
Since then , they have fixed the bug but it's hard to trust Brave again.

I've made a fucking retro game and it takes too much time and effort to make this thing when I complete my game I showed this to my cousins and their first words was it is too boring anybody could make it could you make something like pubg or fortnite when I listen to these words they were fucking demotivating and made me drive crazy I don't know how do I explain them how much hard to make something like this.14

This Safari Bug is sooo bad, really hard to find it. (It initializes new variables with the element where id and variable name is the same, why?)10

Luckily I don't work at a place like this anymore, but I sure hate it when a company touts that they are an effective company who has implemented agile "the right way", then when they describe their process in detail, it is almost exactly the opposite of what agile is supposed to be.
I've worked for a couple places that just couldn't get their head around the fact that one of the reasons agile exists is because estimating software is hard, and only after doing agile the real right way for an extended period of time can a company expect to have realistic estimates. The business can't go a week without hard deadlines.2 -
I'm getting beat up pretty bad by Rust. I like it so far but man is it hard. Imposter-syndrome is almost making me lose motivation. Almost, but I won't quit, one day I'll get there.
I think the primary reason I think I'm having such a hard time is that I'm trying to learn stuff that prevents me from making some mistakes that I have never run into. I know a bit of the theory but no hand's on experience on double-free errors, memory leaks and weird low-level stuff. I read the documentation, mostly understand what stuff is for but when I go write code I'm just like "now what?". I don't have enough experience to know when and where to use some concepts and I'm super lost. I don't know where to start and the feeling of being completely overwhelmed by all sorts of new stuff is at the same time exciting and frightening.
I have never, as a programmer, thought something was hard. All of my past knowledge required dedication, work and patience, but I wouldn't say I ever felt something was *hard*. But Rust... damn. Rust is hard.
Hopefully at the end of this super steep learning curve I'll know a lot more stuff and have stronger "dev powers" and be one step closer to being as knowledgeable as some of you guys around here to whom I look up to.2 -
Got a promotion at the end of April this year from Junior Dev to React Engineer, and HR STILL hasn't amended my contract... At this point I'm owed 2 months of backpay... Why is it so hard for HR in any business to just change a field, sign some forms and bung it off?7

Recently I tried implementing a 2d grid you could drag (for performance I decided it would auto genetate new grid tiles)
Gotta say, I have a lot more respect for people who try to build this without a framework, I am building it using JavaScript and pixi.js
But man, drawing graphics is hard 😅
It's worth it though, performance is mad 💪3 -

Google wanted to be politically correct and gave faces different colors. But apparently using "black" or "asian" is a shame too so all of these emojies have same name.
This decision was very poor as it's hard to implement this duplicity in frontend so as always Devs choose easiest choice - just use the first one. And first one is always yellow...
Congrats on making whole lazy Dev world using your "correct" emojies enforcing only one face style.3 -
Damn this week topic is hard.
I am gonna go with managing a team. I have to use the DRY SOLID YAGNI KISS on daily basis at non-dev tasks too.3 -

Why doesn't Skype of business have an application for Linux? Every company meeting where a developer isn't involved is run on sfb. Being on Ubuntu it is hard to attend any such meeting. Any meeting between developers is on zoom so we're good.
We can't really convince every one (other than developers) to start using zoom.
Do we have any other alternatives? Is this a lost cause?20 -

I am a computer science student and have worked with Java and C++ until now. A week ago i started in a job i have gotten from my professor. I have to reverse engineer a big python project and figure out how some things work on the serverside. This is the first time i have to work with python.
I get that you can write code fast with this dynamically typed language, but BOY. Is it just me or is this language fucking hard to reverse engineer? I mean what the fuck. There are some member variables in which can be anything. Like you suggest there is an object of this and that and then python comes in and is like: Good guess, but fuck you.4 -
In january this year i convinced my whole team to switch from Skype to Stride. And now Stride announced that they are teaming up with Slack... I am going to look like complete idiot because we have to switch once again ... 😥7

Just came across a function with a typo (this is in TypeScript) - let's call the function slightlyComplicaedName - see the typo? t is missing. Wanted to refactor the function name to fix the typo. Next thing I know, the project doesn't compile anymore. There was already a function called slightlyComplicatedName in that file and it was doing something completely different.
I get that naming is hard, but using typos to differentiate between functions seems too much :)2 -
Me: Ah, I need to delete /path/to\ some/directory

rm -rf /path/to
finger slips, touch "Enter" too hard for my comfort, heart skips a beat, but nothing is happening. Phew. I dodged a bullet.
I'll never ever learn this lesson.2 -
Why is it so hard to remember, that devs need an error message if they should help you. just saying "it does not work" is not helping.
I even wrote you a checklist. so f*ing use it! I'm not there to be called every time just to tell you to do something that's already on this list.
Every. F**ing. Time.2 -
Today I heard my first "This is a feature, not a bug" from a enterprise which gives us a SaaS.

I don't know why, but in DevRant's weekly rant, I always find a word that I cannot understand. Even google translate is not that helpful in those cases. for this rant, the word is "Procrastination" :-/
Why some English words have to be so terrifyingly hard? These words always make me stay away from writing for the weekly rants :-/18 -

I have this urge to get better at coding and software architecture and design. But fuck me if I'm not lazy about it.
All these crazy good books and lectures and here I am, doing jackshit to improve. Can't even finish my own personal projects. Bah.
I know how I'm supposed to go about it, how to keep engaged in a cycle of personal betterment. I lack self-discipline to do it though... Tried meditation for a time, but haven't really stuck to it. Currently trying to follow stoics (Seneca, Marcus Aurelius and some others), but the mindset is not so easy to adopt, and the practical philosophies even harder.
Oh well. Life is hard. Blah-blah-blah. Thanks for reading. Just wanted to vent, really.8 -
I'm currently founding a startup right after graduation. As the CTO with no employees at the moment I'm like every position in the company related to dev and Ops. It's the biggest challenge I've faced as a dev so far. Though I really learn a lot and grow mature pretty fast and it is challenging in a good sense from a technical perspective, I'm facing hard personal problems like insecurity in decision making, doubting my skills since I'm definitely no senior and a mid to high effectiveness to stress.
I've mixed feelings about the pure speed and developments right now, but the good side of things is far more exciting then the bad side is frightening.
What truely pisses me off though, is the missing time to spend here on devRant. FUCK. FML.
Have a good (REST) weekend.4 -
I don't have a "most painful error".
The real pain for me is the
WHY ISN'T THIS WORKING

THIS SHOULDN'T TAKE THIS LONG...
It's just the worst combo of events / feelings / leads to the hopeless depths of imposter syndrome and etc.1 -
"My generation's obsession with having established careers before 25 has led to everyone being hyper competitive, opportunistic, self-centered and deeply insecure. I wish everyone could relax a bit!"
I came across this quote few days back and I don't know why but this did hit me hard. Every word was so so true, I wish I along with everyone of this age group could relax a bit and enjoy this wonderful life.
Do you feel the same as I do, or is it just me ?10 -
To my friend who will (hopefully) never see this:

Stop writing motherfucking state management libraries every week that are supposed to "take the pain out" of redux. Fuck this. If you find redux hard, I don't think we should work together. Shit, there are so many difficult concepts regarding web development, but redux? Redux is hard? Fuck you, stupid bitch!3

You will get far more rejections than acceptance. A lot of the time it has more to do with the interviewer and not the candidate (assuming the candidate is a genuine hard worker). The job search process is similar in this regard to finding a mate or compiling your code.
Keep moving forward! -
48 boolean variables.

It's clear why the class name is "GameHardActivity", this certainly is hard to maintain, understand, edit, and believe.

Need opinions on testing as a career:
- is it good?
- Do you find your work interesting?
- Is it rewarding(in terms of salary/timings/other stuff)?
- Does it has a good career growth?
- How hard is the work for a fresher in this?
- How much mentor support does a fresher gets in this?
- How much salaries are there in this?
- how true do you find the believe that software testing will get automated and jobs in this area will get reduced in future?
(Better if you can give a comparison in your answers, with developer profile) how tru

How hard can it be to make a calculator app. Apparently Microsoft cannot get it right. You might say hey, but it works already. No it does not. See in math 1-(-1)=2 because the double minus sign cancel each other and turn into a plus. Well the w10 calculator app, just does 1-1=0 and show that this is the result. Yes this is the result of one minus one. This is not the result of one minus minus one. This is basic math .... Stop focusing on the interface and code the base right Microsoft.15

So I just found out the hard way, that you can't take screenshots, which is great if you want to enforce privacy, but not so great if you want to treasure some of the most awesome comments you find in this community.
Is there a possibility to add a feature like favorite comments?14 -
Why does noone implement autoupdater, especialy on linux side? Is there a reason i dont get? Sure, most system stuff is better in apt, but if i install servers, i do not want to wait for these stupid linux release timings! If it were hard, id understand. But most of this is possible with something like GitHub API and 20 Minutes of time. I mean, yeah backwards compatibility and what not, but then handle that internaly.
Example: I use dnsmasq on a raspberry pi. RPI is running raspbian. Raspian is debian 8. Debian 8 has a version of dnsmasq with a pretty annoying bug, which prevents me from using dnssec, as i cant open any cloudflare pages. Why, o why isnt this updated at MY will? Then, if it isnt, why is it so impossible hard to compile this myself, no docs for that, no binaries, NOTHING? Dear server devs, please add atleast basic autoupdate functionality without having to rely on the base os.
Or, give me easily deployable binaries, if you cant write something integrated.12 -

Hi this is my first post. Kind of annoyed at the job market right now. I've applied to a lot of positions without much luck. My internship last summer got cancelled bc of covid, so all my actual job experience is retail. It's hard to break into the field even with a college degree.8

I am so sick of this place. Production deployment shouldn't be such a massive cluster fuck of different departments and sometimes redundant configurations. Knowing who to talk to about a problem shouldn't change daily, and it shouldn't be hard to figure out.
My jvm doesn't appear to be running in production. I hunt down the fucker who is supposed to be handling this problem today...but he's out of office and no one knows who his stand in is...GODDAMNIT!2 -

After all the rants I've written on this topic, no, no, fuck no. I ain't answering jackshit. The trauma is very real. I'm trying to not have a panic attack just remembering few of the times I've lost work, personal data, side projects, accounts, you name it.

With a nice cup of coffee, you start earlier than your colleagues, you do the hard part that everyone is afraid to touch.
But there is always someone who starts late his day and leave usually the first with a stupid smile.
I'm not the manager, so it's not my responsibility to control this person, I admit seeing this affects my motivation but I don't need to have his load on my plate.
I know that this case is quite common but I needed to rant about it.

Service status pages that poorly reflect actual service status are so annoying. Ex. GitHub is having a lot of latency issues with processing updates and like 5 people in my office noticed it while their status page still says everything is fine.
This isn't to explicitly call out GitHub since many service status pages behave like this, but it definitely shows a general weakness in these health checks. I've seen similar issues with tons of services, web hosts, etc. Monitoring is definitely hard but will hopefully keep getting better.1 -
We have a external demo this thursday. We still need to merge a lot of branches and somehow get a online environment working.
It's 30C and my motivation is dropping by the hour.
At least im not the one to actually have to demo this for people in suits giving you a hard time.
But there are a lot of responsibilities open and no one is taking a lead or having somekind of plan. -
Wtf is happening to tech security... Last 4 months
All WiFi is now crackable. .. in short amount of time

iPhones cracked ...

Android been suffering.
And everyone knows Mac's security is joke ...

And I know how to do all this... It's all out in the open not even hard to find8 -

Why is it so hard to explain to people that
The speed of time = 60 minutes / hour

Hey everyone!
Me and my team have been working very hard to create this programming language which people thought impossible to make. After years of work/research and hard-work we are now announcing the first beta release of this programming language. This programming language which we call "English_Code" is going to be revolutionary since it understands any English sentences. Now the programmers can finally code in English without learning the if-else, loops and other syntax keywords. Errors will be shown in pure English and your managers can now understand your code.
Anyway, let us know what you think, and we hope you enjoy!4 -
I am on a conference call and I have this system admin saying it is hard to create a Windows virtual server. And so it starts... *eye roll* 😒😒😒

Hi I just joined this great Community and here is my thoughts about programming tap "++" if you agree if not then change your mind.
For me programming is like becoming wizard of next generation. Like wizard you can control or create anything because in future you will find electronics containing programs written by a wizard (programmer). We are not people who can repair computer but greater then that because a pc is just a box without programs (software)
You are reading this article because you loves challenges and you are hard working too.1 -
What does my current job hate descriptive names? Like to the point of active antagonism? We're a subscription based service. Why is SubscriptionExpiration the date you log in? Why does SubscriptionStatus only contain the name and id of product you're subscribed to and nothing to do with an actual status? All I need is the date a user subscribed. Why is this so hard!?!?7

I am unable to see anything useful in current social networks. It all looks like big advertising platforms and I am not interested in looking on ads. This personalization is so shitty that original content is very hard to find. All is so political correct and trendy and what about uniqueness of human individuals. Shitty socialists networks. Hope this website would not be another one.5

How do I become good with functional features(map, reduce, filter, zip, flatmap) in Javascript and Python?
It feels so alien. I'm so used to writing plain old loops.
Reading and undersranding this kind of style in other people's code is really hard for me, especially if all this is happeining on the same line.4 -
(As of Tuesday at 10:00 PM) We have a project with a hard due date Sunday.
We have yet to get a proof of concept finished.
My team has no grasp on reality or how long this project is going to take.
I'm screwed. -
One of my very first PR's didn't even get a comment and I worked hard on it...
Feels bad man, all I need is some kind of yes, thanks for this, or no, this doesn't fit the project goals.
After patiently waiting, went ahead and created my own gem! No response sucks.
Why does this happen?1 -
What a coincidence. This will be that day. Not as dev, but as a student. I know this place called DEVrant, but I'm really nervous right now, because of the tests today. I didn't learn and I'm gonna fail all.
But not the tests the only thing I worry about. I hate this world becouse everybody needs to work hard and there is no break. Rarely you can get some air, but one second later you're in the deep again... I don't know what to say or what to do. This will go in my entire life? This is horrible.
I know. I'm just a student. "It will be harder." you say. But I've had enough of this.3 -
My most recent side project is meant to be a lighthearted thing with a dynamic subdomain where anyone can type [whatever-subdomain-they-want].is.obviously.best or [whatever-subdomain-they-want].are.obviously.best or [whatever-subdomain-they-want].is.not.obviously.best or [whatever-subdomain-they-want].are.not.obviously.best.
I have a list of political terms and people that route to an HTML page that says “[subdomain] has been flagged as political. The creator of this site intended this domain to be used to spread joy and merriment and feels that pushing political agendas undermines that intent.”
I have sentiment analysis in combination with a disallow list on is/are (positive, rather than is.not and are.not) routes that if the subdomain is flagged as negative by sentiment analysis or matches a term in the disallow list, it serves an HTML page that says “[subdomain] is/are NOT obviously best. What the hell is your problem?”
Sentiment analysis only goes so far and it’s hard for it to catch a lot of things (since it’s a small amount of input) and I’m not confident that I’ll think of all of the possible things that really shouldn’t resolve to is/are OBVIOUSLY best.

If it helps, the disallow list so far is https://raw.githubusercontent.com/A...16 -
Becoming a dev is hard, what was the thing that motivated you the most in your journey?
Currently coding as a hobby, but hoping to turn this passion into a full time job someday.
Also, why is devRant so obsessed with hentai?20 -
If you ever try to learn C++, give C Primer Plus 6th edition book a try. This is one of the best books that are prepared to teach, not tell about C++.
I tried Bjarne's boooks, but damn they are hard to understand, with badly formatted non-monnospace font code examples and terrible technique to teach. -
So at work, I was trying to convince a senior programmer to adopt Golang for a new project that would need to handle large amount of throughput as oppose to Django with gunicorn and other optimizations (which is what we usually do).
The response was "we'd have a hard maintaining it, as no one really knows Go and it will be hard to hire people with Go knowledge".
So my question: "in your opinion, is that a good reason?" I have some go experience from other jobs, it seems like a superior solution for this problem.6 -
My goal is to study for 300 hours (coding problems, behavioral, and system design combined) before I start applying for companies.
Is this overkill? Is it enough?
I put a "stop" on my studying since I know there will always be a question that's a "got-ya" or some extremely hard Leetcode question that require some obscure algorithm from college that had 1 figure about it.5 -
Why are hooks so awful?
What justifies having everyone using React relearn how to do things when hooks do not bring any new features to React?
Why does getting setInterval to work with hooks require a ~3000 word blog post by a maintainer which constantly assures you this IS a step forward?
Is scrolling up and down a class component really so hard that this clusterfuck is worth it?
>:(6 -
When the PMO tells you to: "Aye, what's up with that delivery program you started yesterday? Is it done? I already promised some licenses for next Moday (morning ofc)"
You stupid illiterate baboon, be gratious I even picked up this NP hard task, it's like solving the Travelling Salesman problem, not easy!
Fucking PMO -
*me to myself* okay this time I'm not solving that problem with recursion. The assignment is hard enough already.
*A ton of sweat, blood and hours later* Whoops. -
Simple question, I'm writing a coding course that does some cloud stuff.
Which cloud providers actually allow you to limit spending without some stupid "setup a service to nuke everything" fuckery?
As far as I can tell, Azure and Oracle. It's stupid how often this is raised as a concern for beginners and how hard it is to actually limit.8 -
Javascript in a nutshell:
Function in a teaching example for a framework, checks for validity of input, dev returns null instead of false when it isn't. In another place, uses !variable to check if variable is 0.
fucking follow the semantics of the code you write cunt why do you have to do this why is it so hard to write variable !== 0
I'm sorry, this really triggers me.

I know the world doesn't owe me anything but why is it so fucking hard to get a job in this industry?? Unless you have a few years experience in a job behind you. Well if I can't get a fucking coding job in the first place how the fuck am I supposed to get work experience. The world is deluded fucked up place. Rant over!8

So on Friday I completed my last day of full time employment to break out into the world of freelance. Sunday night my PSU decides life is too hard and cooks itself... Is this a sign of things to come?

What's your thoughts on Ethereum Name Service? Do you think this will take off?
ENS is basicly a decentralized DNS based on the Ethereum blockchain.
It seems like a significant piece of technology to me but I'm having a hard time to judge how significant or useful it will be and to whom.

Anyone seeing this rant from Sydney? If yes, why is it so hard to get any IT/Dev jobs for an international student? Sucks.

FUCK i just lost 20€
I fucking hate "real" cash. It is dirty unhygienic and you can so fucking easily loose it. I swear losing a Note is a worse pain than cutting yourself or burning your hand. It's just as bad as stomping your head really hard. I HATE THIS FEELING22 -
I spent the entire day trying to force WordPress to enqueue jQuery and fonts.googleapis.com in the footer. Why is this so hard to do? Why is this still a problem? Does Automattic just not know that PageSpeed Insights flagging render blocking is even a thing?

incredible how many clowns are out there... saw a guy asking about "blocks" and "plugins" on reddit about gatsby... what is this, 2001 with PHP? GTFO or learn your shit, its clear you are an absolute clown. its 2023, nothing is hard unless you make it hard (deep truth that only the good ones will understand; stubborn idiots will remain stubborn and bitter)

I love it when a coding assignment is to take the last assignment and do one thing more optimized !!! 😄😄
All the hard stuff is already done and all I have to do is some optimization that I’ve done before in other languages and just have to implement in this one 😄6 -
A new year, a new job.
After a years hard graft learning front end code I finally landed my first dev job!
Even though the job is a while away, there will be nothing stopping me getting there and learning all I can in this industry.

I have to install Windows server on a system that's been running a modified version of Ubuntu (yes, there is a very good reason for this), there are for raid6 configured hard drives, problem is Windows server can both delete and repartition the the hard drives, but can't see the partions when I want it to install to them! WHY, OH WHY? YOU MADE THE PARTITIONS YOURSELF! WHAT DO YOU MEAN ITS NOT THERE?!?!?1

Me : .. but sir without sass/js compiled, how can we address the issue?
Boss : that is not an issue, issue is with on approach we have taken?
You sick fuck, you take other developers un-finished work, expect me to finish it (which it did) and when the other developer is not smart enough to copy paste the solution, you give an "update" to me, I mean how the fuck, what ever..
I really really put efforts to make this shit happen, I know very little about your commerce cloud shit, but when you question my logic on basis of someone who will pay you to finish her work, it is very unethical and hard to swallow it down.
Maybe this is my first real job, that is why this is so hard, but I gotta do what I gotta do -
I thought I had lost a password to devrant on my old phone tried to rest my password I don't no which email I used among my army of emails address
Well my thoughts today are on a call worker who has a terrible work attitude.... fuck I hate3 this guy .. probably am tired of this job... is it too hard to ask for a company that has better pay and organised work flows .. here is hell hound projects come left right center everything is urgent the system is broke or roten from the core can never be fixed -
I use this little guy as a rubber ducky now. He's useful when I'm trying to study stuff which is particularly hard to remember.5

Hey guys, how would you rate iOS vs Android for privacy? I read recently that Android pulls up to 10x more data off of your phone (for data mining) than iOS and that overall, iOS is really the mobile OS of choice when privacy and control of your data is a priority.
Anyone have any hard evidence to support this?12 -
So. My new machine at work has decided that running visual studio is too hard and our build script has decided that building vcxproj files is too hard. And our one sysadmin for our team of 100+ is the only one allowed to fix it.
Luckily I have an old box that *only* takes 45 minutes to run our build, a hangover, apparently I am going through early manopause because it is hot as fuck in this office, and today is the day that everyone wants to loudly ask every question ever.
I guess what I am saying is I blame everyone else for my bad decisions and project them into my you-me instead of focusing on my me-me. Also I really don't want to talk to the S.A. He is difficult.undefined this place is a tinder box spiritual awakening fucking dad who thought a 1 to 100 ratio was a good idea -
Studying and working at tge same time is hard. I woke up before seven, spend 6 hours studying for exam I have tomorrow, now I'm going to office, and when I get back at 7pm I have to finish project for tomorrow and study some more for exam. Hate days like this one4
-
So, working on real multi language support today I was searching for countries and country-codes. Yes this one is easy peasy. Also easy if you want every countryname in your supported languages.
But why is there no source for the states or provinces translated in every language. It's so hard to find...
Anyone knows a source for it? Is it worth to create a project for such translations?1 -
Been coding for over 5 years and today I'm going into a college exam about simple GUI with Windows Forms and simple class structures.. This will be so hard

I like my job, but I will happily admit there is always something better out there, though it will be hard to find, which is fine with me. To assist with this, I made a form response for recruiters:
Is it a contract?
Is the budget for the role less than XXX a year?
Is it located in a suburban place with limited or nonexistent transit access?
If any answers are yes, I am not interested.1 -
Greatest minds of humankind processed all that eternal questions and hard problems of ourselves and the outside world. They all formed the outcomes and conclusions into comprehensive messages.
Are they hidden somewhere? Is this some hidden knowledge that is extremely exclusive? Where is that library and how hard it is to get there? Maybe it is impossible for me?
No.
It’s right there, hidden in plain sight and often overlooked.
It’s called art. That packages are artworks. I just realized that all that time people much smarter than me spent their lives thinking about all that stuff and I can get all their answers right now, for free.
Art is not a steal.
Art is a robbery.17 -
I'm working real hard for my studies and I'm loving it because I'm getting the results. However, friends keep on telling me how I'll regret that later and that this is my only youth etc...
I don't know if what I'm doing is right, the idea to waste a period is scary, but also I really want to succeed to be good in CS later on ...3 -
So, I'm really really impressed with London. This place has an amazing history, culture, and the people are great. After visiting Copenhagen, Stockholm, Berlin and now London, I love London the most.
I've never tried to get a visa and my American friends tell me it's hard. Well fuck you I don't care if it's hard. All the better if it gives me a goal in life.
I leave at the end of the week but I swear I'm going to get back here next year. Don't care how hard it is.
Also I saw Alan Turing's Bomb. Pictures below.3 -
I fucking killed my hard drive by installing the guest additions in a Windows VM! Everything freezed and crashed suddenly, how the hell is that possible? How can Windows fuck everything up, even in a VM??
(Probably wasn't Windows fault, that makes me even more angry).
This hard drive wasn't even two months, his predecessor died heroically in a tragic magnet incident :(3 -
Recently took over a freelance project to update an existing app, and this thing is full of comments like "TODO: Remove This" with no context. So hard to work with.
For the love of God, add some context to your comments. Especially if someone else is going to be seeing your code. -
"getConfig ()", where "config" is literally in the same mothfucking file and the fucking function's not even exported.

Guys, i've searched long and hard for a custom Kindle fire 1st Gen ROM... Digging through the internet to find this shit is hard. The dropbox links on XDA for OtterKat aren't working.
I managed to flash Cyanogen to my other kindle (Fire HD 7) - which my dad wants back, even though he dosent use it. I'm left with this first gen, and i've been at it all day2 -
Why does it have to be so incredibly hard to get an nvidia card to work under Linux? The driver is in available, we have the technology but every time I try to get this damned thing to work I end up in front of a fucked XServer and this stupid "Something went wrong" gdm screen only to apt-purge nvidia from my drive and start from the beginning once more.5

'Complicated is easy, but simple is hard☝️ '

PHP 7.4
Anonymous functions in PHP can be quite verbose, even when they only perform a simple operation. Partly this is due to a large amount of syntactic boilerplate, and party due to the need to manually import used variables. This makes code using simple closures hard to read and understand.

Background: I am working on task x. On successful completion of task x, task y may be given to me. Task x is haaaaaard. My group is not the only player and any fuck up will break my group and at least two others. Now here is my story:
Me: Yeah I am doing this hard thing and that hard thing and getting ready for these hard meetings.
FormerCoWorker fcw (): wow that sounds hard.
CurrentCoWorker ccw (): yeah he's working on task x and task you.
Me me (): what? No I'm not. I am working on task x. Don't go randomly assigning me tasks like that.
ccw: well if you finish task x you will be an expert in section z of code. So it is only natural you take on task you.
me: yeah but task x sucks and task y is why several engineers have quit the company. You never know. You could be assigned task y and quit. Why do I have to take on task y and quit?
NGL, I will do it of they promote me. I may be a whore, but I am gonna get paid. -
Hi guys, this is my first post, I am currently doing an internship as a backend intern and I'm constantly anxious if I'm good enough I come from a no name college and everybody here is from a top tier college and I constantly worry that I am not on an equal footing as other interns.
Make no mistake I work hard, yet I start to feel insecure. I hope this feeling goes away when I get more experience.13 -

Even if world heals from Covid 19, I don't think Bill Gates and his family is going to recover from the PR damage.
The image he built up through his philanthropy is in shambles. I don't know if it's misinformation by conspiracy theorists about vaccination agenda, but Bill gates' smirk during his interviews on a serious subject is definitely not helping him.
He is gonna have a really really hard time coming back from this.26 -
Something like what the optgroup tag does in Excel.
Anybody?
Why is something this simple so hard to find how to make? -
I got a request on LinkedIn to endorse a past hard-working colleague of mine, but honestly, the only thing I remember about them is that they used to hang a hand-written sign over their cubicle that simply said:
if (!pain){
gain = null;
}
Is writing this a compliment?6 -
Need opinions: When your knowledgeable colleague backend-developer chooses 1,2,4,8,16 as enum values instead of 1,2,3,4,5 (for roles associated with permissions, which may be cumulatable) in order to be able to do bitwise operations, is it a sound decision for this scenario? Is it a best practice, just as good, or pedantic?
I want to master bitwise but have a hard time grasping such operations as quickly as logical ones.11 -
First year as a professional developer, and this Thanksgiving break is making it hard to get back into the code base here at work. Am I the only one?2

Remind me again why we have to use/support a weird entity creating framework across all microservices? So that every entity is consistent? (Who cares? Microservices shouldn't) Because hibernate is hard? (It isn't, and it's better documented than this, which needs hibernate anyway).
I'm just building a fragile distributed monolith. -
Replace "Check out this devRant" with the first line when sharing.
I have saved a lot of rants but they have the same title and it is hard to see which is which. I suggest to replace that with the first line or first sentence. -
In my whole carrier as developer. I never felt so helpless as in naming things.
Could be class, method, file name. The worst thing is it become hard as the code base increase.
How you overcome this?8 -
Hello everyone, someone else is stressing the huge amount of technology, especially tools, frameworks that go from one day to the next, and this need to know and adapt them to your vertical or third party projects? ..... for me It's exhausting, sometimes it's really hard to focus ....2

I'm betting that it's just me... but this whole (req, res) in express.js is hard to adjust to. It may as well be (r, s) or anything that doesn't look so similar. I'm writing (request, response) but I'm thinking about just using entirely different words that don't start with the same letter.1

A workout platform, which isn't focused on "hard" facts like hr or distance, rather using "soft" measurements like: Was the workout mentally demanding? How was your sleep? Etc.
Then combine this with some "hard" facts and see what makes your training more effective.
The api is more or less finished. Now the apps have to be developed.3 -
Random hardware question if anyone knows: On the various types of hard drives (Spinner, SSD, M.2, etc.) does it require the same amount of energy to read and write a bit? Or do they take a different amount of power. Is this even effectively measurable? If they're the same, what about at the byte level?6

It is snowing hard here in the mid-West of the States, just wish that we had 4-day work week system since 2 days is not enough in this weather. Wonder how European devs (esp in Germany) enjoy their extra 8hrs?9

I cant find 1 single normal Fucking tutorial explaining how to code FULL DEVOPS PIPELINE for deployment to AWS.
A pipeline that includes
- gitlab (ci cd)
- jenkins
- gradle
- sonarqube
- docker
- trivy
- update k8s manifest
- terraform
- argocd
- deploy to EKS
- send slack notification
How Fucking hard is it for someone to make a tutorial about this????? How am i supposed to learn how to code this pipeline????10 -
So I was given a project to work on a week ago. The expectation given to me was completion in one week. I am a newbie hoping to keep my job so I jumped in head first (didn’t know any better). I ran into several road blocks which I communicated to my boss. Today, he (boss) is freaking out (blaming me for being behind the deadline). We have a meeting with the lead dev (who should have been doing this all along). He says wow. This is way too hard. Let’s scale it all back and focus on an MVP: 10% of what was originally requested. Of course. I get no thanks. No recognition for hard work. I’m just happy my coworker sees the work I’m doing.
- The Scapegoat. -
At the beginning of a master course at my university the students need to do a little task to ensure they know fundamentals about programming. 70% fails the test. They had no Internet access but a reference card for c, c++, Java & python. Is this really that hard?16

NodeJS and MongoDB. And tutorials.
Everywhere tutorials show simple example of console.log output of findOne. Good, that works... But when I try to extrapolate example to assign results to variable, it won't work. Inside that fetch anonymous function it works... But outside, simply undefined no matter what I try. Return doesn't return either...
Why it is so hard to make tutorials and examples that would be actually useful. I've spent hours with this already.
And on top of that it is really hard to find tutorials staying with minimum extra dependencies. Like most tutorials in this case throw mongoose in the soup. And I don't want that.
Sometimes makes me question why I try to learn these new things, when I have knowledge of other technologies that I could use faster and easier...3 -

As theKarlisK and Root stated "When it works it works beautifully, when it doesn't a bit of Google-fu finds a fix".
some issues I found in this journey:
- stuttering in some games, even using custom proton build(halo mcc)
- some titles are hard to even start(my RE7 D:)
- bluetooth with my dongle isn't good, takes to long to connect my xbox s controller, sometimes with doesn't even work at all. had to do a workaround in the first place to pair (but this is a problem with ubuntu, not linux gaming but had to mention it)
- games outside the proton ecosystem can be a pain in the ass to get working. LoL on lutris crashes 3 times at startup, don't wanna even try to install overwatch on lutris
- rbg software can be "hard" to find or the alternative is not that good. (got an alternative for mystic light but is just command line. did not found a logitech keyboard software :/, hadn't search hard enough )
pros:
- being able to game on linux is like a dream come true
- most of my steam games runs out of the box
- is linux
- is linux
but the issues are starting to bother me...5 -
My number one problem whenever I need to write original unique code is this question: "What's the next line supposed to say?"
I just really have a hard time knowing what the next thing is I'm supposed to write, even when I know pretty well what the thing is supposed to do.
Anyone else? -
debugging escalated hard. started with neos, went over Apache and nginx. no more problems there after a clean db import. spent the whole day on this and endet up with the "result", that varnish, this fkn (most of the times helpful) bastard, is the problem. didn't get any results after that. meh.

There an ambiguity between VS2019 and VS2022
VS2019 simply works, and VS2022 is slow and full of bugs and MS keep telling they don't see the problem.
So I did nothing to this file, except adding one more test method and all of a sudden when code was broken elsewhere VS started to hard complain, fixed elsewhere compilation, but stuck with this1 -
i just learnt how much clearcase sucks the hard way. i always used git for personal projects and am used to finding a simple solution to any problem at most one stackoverflow away, i just messed up my local repo, and experienced people could not manage to undo it. i mean come on, this is a f**king versioning software, how hard can it be to delete everything local and re-pull from remote without messing up configuration files? either clearcase has some serious design shortcomings for my understanding of a versioning software, or it is so overly complicated that nobody actually knows how to revert this mistake.2
-
Wanted backing up my windows files so I can install Linux but my 500gb hard drive is acting up, just closed a pop up telling me installed successfully and it never showed up even on my disk management.. I hope it's not dead, pls is there anyone who has experienced this before? 😰2

Promotions that take ages and end up with no title changes when successful.
Why is it this hard to update a title especially for someone who's been here for 3 years and still has the same title as day 1? And it doesn't seem like Workday is the culprit here.6 -
Who knew running Fiber Optics cable would be so hard smh. thought this job was gonna be legit. First IT gig but damn. running 250k,500k abd 1000k cables is no joke. I really would like a desk job ugh!!1

I fucking hate math. Today tried to make 2 unequal rectangles align along 1 axis. This isn't that hard when they aren't rotated but it fucking when they are rotated. I know I have to use geometry to get them aligned and I got it somewat working but as the gap is bigger so is the drift in which it over compensates to the other side and I have no fucking clue how to fix this 😩.
The worst thing is tomorrow I have to be at this again1 -
Ending my internship this week. Past couple of months have been really stressful. Being a startup, I assumed the workload would be high but never guessed it would be this much. They make the interns work just as hard as the full time employees for less than 1/4th the pay. Is it always like this at startups? Man, never worked for more than 8 hours before but 12-14 hours of work is normal here. I just want to survive the week. Wish me luck!1

Me: I hate our current graphing frontend, its super hard to do anything more complex in here and it looks like it was made in the last century, we need a more modern solution!

Does anyone have any advice for making api integration tests data independent? We have a few hundred tests firing against our seed data and they all check for hard coded values. But the problem is that this means adjusting seed data is really really slow as you have to fix integration tests too, which can be thousands of lines of values needing to be corrected.

Fuck today is just one of those fucking days. I'm THE junior and I'm just hitting a fucking wall with my task.

I just got the new ARM-based macbook. I was shocked that the menu bar is sooo fucking high now, and that there is a gap between the menubar and the maximized app.

Typescript is so fucking frustrating sometimes to deal with
The snippet above AND below do the EXACT SAME FUCKING THING. But because you double tap, it loses the fucking (not needed) type before the mapTo. If you aren't paying attention, you get this extremely fucking aggravating wall of red.
God damn it, can't this be better? RxJS is pretty fucking important, so why is this so god damned hard to just get some coherent fucking code highlighting!?

God I hate blaming technology for your mistakes. Don't get me wrong, there is bad shit out there. But this random bashing is annoying.
