This shit is real.
Guy comes to my desk.
Guy: Do you know Python?
Me: Yes
Guy: I want a program that reads a CSV containing IP addresses and tells which of them are valid.
Me: Sure thing. Show me the CSV file.
Guy: (Shows the file)
Me: (Writes a small function for checking whether the IP is valid)
Me: Done Here you go.
Guy: You should be using regex.
Me: Why? This is perfect. No need for regex.
Guy: My manager wants a solution using regex only.
Me: Why so?
Guy: I don't know. Can you do it using regex?
Me: Only if you say so. (Stackoverflow. Writes a humongous regex). Done!
Me: Just for curiosity, what is your application?
Guy: I will port it in Java. You see, regex is easy to debug.
Me: Ohhh Yes. I forgot that. Good luck with your regex.22 -
A client called
Client: Hello Mr. Can you come to our office today?
Me: Yes sure
In fews hours I was there
Client: Check this email we are getting every day
It was email from spammers who asking to redesigning their website because it was not responsive
Me: 🧐Thinking ‘valid point !’
Me: So what you need me to do for you then?
Client: We need you to redesign the site
Lol - thanks spammers for bringing in new client12 -

I don't know why @dfox , @trogus didn't want a username with underscore and I'm sure they must be having some valid reason for it. But how in fuck did this user have the guts to rate the app 1 star simply because it doesn't have a login with fb feature? I mean you can request for a feature but it's dumb of you to rate 1 star because it doesn't have a feature you want. This is true for any app not only devRant.

"could I get admin privileges to reboot this server?"
Sounds valid enough, right?
OH YEAH SURE, YOU'RE A TINY USER ON A HUGE ASS SHARED SERVER, OF COURSE I'LL GIVE YOU ROOT ACCESS TO REBOOT THE WHOLE FUCKING SERVER.
Worst part, he didn't understand why that would be weird.
Can I buy a little common sense somewhere for this guy?28 -
"Your stupidity is so vast that its value can only be stored in a double, because a float has insufficient range" - John Byrd
This insult is from one of my personal favourites and must be one the best programmer insults ever since it is backed up with programmatic proof written in valid C code.
You should really read the post, it's only one of the many gems in there.

Pro tip:
Although 'hmm either kill it or if that doesn't work, sacrifice some of its children' is a perfectly valid sentence in the sysadmin world, it's not in public.

One of the linux engineers gets up with: 'I'm sorry, I just pushed a windows server sale to the sales guy :/'
Linux engineer 1: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE D:
Linux engineer 2: WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT @_@
Linux engineer 3: Why the FUCK would we want to manage yet another piece of problems?!
Engineer who said it: 'But it's still a sale guys....'
All engineers: THAT'S NOT A VALID EXCUSE O_o

Many people want a cashless society. This is especially useful when:
- you just lost your bank card.
- the banks mobile payment app isn't working at all.
- its Saturday evening.
I'm so fucking glad that I've got some cash left at home and that cash is still a valid payment method 😅28 -
Stack Overflow
A valid question making a fair point.
A valid answer with references and examples.
Both downvoted13 -
Our html:
<input type="number"/>
Accepts only numbers, so far so good. Until QA files a bug:
"Numeric input accepts the letter 'e' "
Apparently 'e' is a valid because you can input something like '1e3' which fucking means '1000' !
Our team tried to argue with the QA that 'e' is valid because it simply means exponent but they argue a normal user would not know what an exponent means because they are not "mathematically inclined"
Part of me agrees with what the QA argues but then I think an average user who could use a fucking laptop or mobile will most certainly know what an exponent is.13 -
People who claims "XXX is slow" should put screenshots of:
- CPU/MEM stats
- Task bar in full, to see how much crap is in background
- Desktop, to see how clean your computer is
If you don't have i7/16GB or you install gazillion of background apps, then your "slow" argument is simply not valid.22 -

WHY THE FUCK DOES MY BOSS HAVE ME MOCKING FUCKING RECAPTCHA API RESPONSES? IT'S SO FUCKING STUPID
I CAN'T MOCK THE RECAPTCHA JS METHODS SO I HAVE TO MAKE VALID-LOOKING JSON RESPONSES AND I DON'T HAVE A FUCKING CLUE HOW ANY OF IT FUCKING WORKS
THIS IS THE STUPIDEST THING ANYONE HAS EVER ASKED OF ME (okay, it isn't, but it's pretty damned close.) AND IT'S DURING MY BLOODY PERFORMANCE REVIEW.40 -
How stackoverflow works(for me):
- First some guru will downvote it & someone comments saying it is duplicate/easy/stupid/should be somewhere else.
- Then a very generous person comes in, says its a valid question, answers & upvotes it.
- After few hours/days, other people come looking for the same question & then they upvote it.
This is called a true happy ending.4 -

A client asked me to add a mobile phone field to a registration form and asked me explicitly to use their server side validation for it.

On my way to buy a second hand Oneplus One!
I don't think that not being able to remove Google services from my phone because this phone isn't supported by open source roms is a valid excuse anymore, especially since the new dutch surveillance law goes into plan the 1st of May.
I don't have that much money but I can afford this second hand device right now so let's do this.
Will install an open source rom without Google apps onto it!26 -
I found an interesting job post on SO, I decide to apply. It comes with a programming test. A simple unit test that must pass (see current-1 post). I get it passing, go to send off my resume and code and the fucking email they supplied isn't valid or active. Fuck you. Eat dicks. Useless fucking HR.

Worst error message management.
Can't you just display the valid pattern for an username instead of showing different error message everytime.
If plain ASCII and only letters and numbers same for them, just show only letters and numbers, and
what's that hourly limit.
I just couldn't sign up after wasting time thinking of an username.6 -
Hating WordPress is cool these days, but:
1) Shitloads of themes for clients to choose from (I'm not good with designing and where I live you are more likely to meet a unicorn than a front-end developer that can code).
2) Non technical people can understand it's admin interface without lots of explaining.
3) Huge community makes it extremely easy to find answers even when looking for pretty specific stuff.
For me it's a valid option when making something simple.18 -
FUCK! agshdklgdahgisdahl;k!
I just spent 45 FUCKING MINUTES debugging try to figure out WHY THE HELL a function that is supposed to return either a pointer to a valid object OR ZERO if a valid object is not found, was RETURNING FUCKING EIGHT!
Then I saw it... I typed:
nodeList[index];
instead of:
return nodeList[index];
It took me looking at a stack trace and a disassembly of the function to realize this.
Can't wait for this three-day weekend...18 -
I just got denied access to a metro station because I use the old BuzzyPazz over the new Mobib card, that digitally authorizes you and knows where you are, and when. Debian 9.3's gpg issue is driving me crazy! I can't install anything outside of the default apt repos no matter what I try.
No matter what, apt always does the exact same thing. It adds the repo; then finds, imports, and processes the key; and finally fails with "gpg: no valid OpenPGP data found."
I've spent hours looking this up and trying to fix it.
Just. ARGH!

Challenge: Make valid sentences using DevRant usernames as words in it. Aim for proper grammer, but don't be extra about it. Anything (😈) works, as long as the usernames are valid.

I fucking hate that PHPStorm is the only valid option for serious PHP framework development.
It's the opposite of free in every imaginable way: Expensive subscription license, hard to fully customize, closed source.
But there's just nothing even approaching the intelligence of intellisense. There are plugins for Vim, Atom, Sublime and VSCode which try to emulate it, but they are so fucking basic and dumb.
😠26 -
Bootcrap. Just looked at their main page, and it's a whopping 75k of markup plus 294k of CSS (W-T-F?!), and 224k of JS. All of that shit for a page that shouldn't be more than 10k of markup, 16k of CSS, and that has no reason to even use JS at all.
<a class="d-flex flex-column flex-lg-row justify-content-center align-items-center mb-4 text-dark lh-sm text-decoration-none
Yeah, that crap is supposed to be "easier" to write. That's what you get for totally failing to understand how HTML/CSS even work, clinging to late 1990s practices, and ditching decades of progress since then.
Although the Bootcrap folks do manage to write valid HTML. As low as that sounds, but that counts already as an exceptional skill in the notoriously low-skilled frontend "dev" world that is all about making shitty websites.
Oh, and the rest like Failwind and Bulimia aren't any better. They already fail at delivering valid HTML on their websites.17 -

GUYS I BUILT A FUCKING URL BAR AND IT EXISTS, IT'S ALIGNED, AND IT FUCKING WORKS
It doesn't have a very good check for what is a valid url tho, it is currently working checking for subreddits like /r/<whatever> and it checks if the link begins with http:// or https://. At some point in the near future I want to clean it up a bit, maybe write some regex (oh god kill me now) that'll actually check for a valid url7 -
Not dev related but still a rant:
My company decided that all the network traffic should go throu a virus scanner. But they don't know what the fuck they are doing, so now EVERY valid SSL cert gets rejected by our browsers because the virus-scanner breaks the SSL encryption.

I am using this SDK and I came across a property "Orientation" of type int.
Why int? Is it an enum or something? Let's have a look into the online documentation...
"Gets or sets the orientation."
😣
Yeah, thanks. Very useful.
It's again that kind of documentation which simply restates the property name or method name. Who needs this?
So I tried to set the Orientation property to 1 to see what happens.
A runtime exception then told me that the only valid values are 0, 90, 180 and 270.
Well, this is kind of stupid but ok, I can live with that.
But ffs, put that info into the documentation, where it belongs!4 -
I sometimes forget to close the tab to my bank's website. I flip back to it, hours, or even days later. As soon as the tab becomes active the "You'll be logged out in 60 second" timer starts ticking. Literally, days after I logged in, I can click "Stay logged in" and it works!
Their session timeout logic is all fucking Javascript based!? Don't they log out the session server-side at some point? How the fuck is my session still valid 2 days after initial login?5 -
Boss: we have to fix this bug.
Me: It is not a bug ..the server takes more time to send the response which cause the timeout issue . we may need to change the implementation to increase the performance to send the response quickly. It will take some time
Boss: okay can we fix this by today
Me: ya if we increase timeout to 20 seconds the issue is fixed
Boss: No we want the server to send the response quickly and we need the fix now
I worked for the weekend to fix it finally......Guess what ....the change dint go live since the scenario was not valid and will never likely to happen in production -
My ass of a supervisor threw yet another bomb my way.
He basically said I would fire you if I could, but I don't have a valid reason, however I will not give a good grade for your dissertation because you don't do exactly what I told you. (not exact words, that was just the gist)
So I need to start looking for a new supervisor and a new department. He is not letting or helping me grow. I can't be under this fucking much stress, do this much fucking work and stay sane.
Gonna go cry now. Bye.21 -
So VS Code, you're using ~60% of my CPU and I've let you do that for around 1/2 hour now. Why do you do this? I know your brother can do this as well, but he does have some valid reasons unlike yourself. You're just a glorified notepad with some extensions.11

The website of the italian post service is "closed" between 23:45 and 00:15, everyday.
I don't know if something like this happens in other countries...
And do you know when I really need to access it?
ALWAYS IN THESE 30 MINUTES, not the others 1.410 of the day!
P.S.
What do you think, what could be a valid reason to "close" a web service?
I thought about backup, but other services don't have this problem.4 -

Ok, a few days ago I recommended contabo.com as a good and cheap VPS, because our company uses it and it is blazingly fast. BUT! I am definitely NOT doing this!
"False or fraudulent orders are commonplace on the Internet. We have to take measures to prevent such false or fraudulent orders. Our system has identified your order as a possible false order. We must now prove your order as a valid order, otherwise we cannot provide you with the services you bought. We need your help with this. Please send us a copy of your passport or national identity card or something similar which corresponds to the data you have provided to us. Alternatively, you can send us your telephone or electricity bill if it contains your address. The address must match the address you provided on our homepage. It is sufficient if you simply take a photo of the document. The only purpose of this is to prove your order as authentic. This is why it does not matter which of the mentioned documents you send us and it does not matter if you make a scan or take a photo. A scammer could not provide any of these documents, this means one document is already enough to prove that your order is authentic and valid."13 -
Never call me unfair.
A few years(!!) ago, I ranted about how you had to update the visual studio updater before you could update visual studio (which I still think is a valid rant)
Today I noticed that the visual studio installer just does this itself silently now. Therefore, I choose to apply praise to this welcome change and in the name of justice and fairness, recognize this vast improvement.

Tl;dr stupid password requirements
Begin quote
Password must not contain any non-alphanumeric characters.
Your Password change was not accepted. Enter your current Password correctly following the rules for New Passwords. Please try again.
Passwords must be between 8 and 12 characters in length and MUST contain each of the following:
At least 1 lower case character (a-z)
At least 1 upper case character (A-Z)
At least 1 numeric digit (0-9)
But, MUST NOT contain:
more than five repeating characters in a row (e.g. 111111356 would not be valid, but 112233445 would be valid)
spaces or other special characters
NOTE: Your new password cannot be the same as any of your 10 previous passwords.
End quote
Are you fucking kidding me? Only (26+26+10)^8 through
(26+26+10)^12 different passwords to go through? It's like the oxygen wasters that built this website give zero fucks about security.
Why? This is the site that manages money and investments. Just allow passwords up to 64 characters, allow any ascii character and just fucking encod the characters to prevent any Injunction.4 -
"We don't use a VCS like git, what are you opinions on this?" This is great in my opinion. You get to see some people sheepishly agree and say it's fine and try back it up, or people put valid points why they think it's wrong. You can start to gauge a person's personality after a few of those kinds of questions.4

So today a client requested that the domain name in the address bar should be all capital letters because of corporate design. Don't get me wrong, this is a valid request for someone who has no experience in the IT world. But he refused to believe me that it wasn't possible. He even claimed that he has seen it at least hundred times and called me incapable. I don't get clients.1

So according to Pfizer, ~39,000 people received a second dose of vaccine/placebo. So about 20,000 got the placebo, and out of that group only 85 got infected in the span of 3.5 months, during the second wave. That's 0.425%.
So they either:
* Proved Covid is not infectious
* Manipulated the shit out of their data
How that fuck is this considered valid analysis?!
If I tried to publish a paper based on such unreliable, statistically meaningless data, I would be rejected without a blink.56 -
PSA to /[devs who things it's a good idea|management who thinks it's a good idea to force your devs]+/g:
There currently exists 1543 (and counting) top level domains. My email addresses follow the pattern: /^[a-z]+@panduro\.guru$/ and I die a little inside whenever I get told my email addresses aren't valid because you thought it was a good idea (to force your devs) to hardcode "valid" top level domains. There is a reason why the filter for input type email does not include top level domains.
And you can't even begin to comprehend how mildly annoyed I get when I message their support and tell them what the problem is (because I'm nice enough to do that) they instead of telling me "thanks for informing us we'll look into it" they tell me "well just get a gmail or something". I should not have to order social status reducing items with my school mail (especially not since I'll loose that email ¾ pairs of years)7 -

I write a thesis about some data mining project.
I need to process 15 million tracking points - today I finally finished coding my algorithm. I was pretty excited and pressed run:
Now, after 2,5 hours of processing, my program got already through a third of all tracking points, as I realized:
I gave my algorithm a non-valid output path.
And that thouht stuck me, as I was already on my way home.
Now I have to go tomorrow (on my day off) to work, to fix and run it again.14 -
For some reason, I lost my devRant subscription. No label anymore... but I'm also not charged anymore.
Subscribing again doesn't seem to work, there's a success message from the app, but not from the play store (I have a valid payment method and have other subs), no fees are charged and my account stays unsubscribed.
Has anyone else experienced this?8 -
Why is it what so many developers think that they are the sole genius surrounded by idiots and completely lack in interpersonal skills or the ability to see other people's arguments as valid? Honestly, with some people it's like working with an emotionally stunted teenager. I literally spoke to someone yesterday who thinks it's impossible to come to a compromise or agreement about anything unless there is a third party to arbitrate and mindlessly insists on his own way in literally every disagreement, even after admitting his logic is faulty. It's like watching a spotty 17 year old argue about politics online I swear it.5

Valid from, valid until.
Who else has this irrational feeling that in some edge case, it might be not long enough?24 -
Earlier this year I had to deploy an "emergency" fix to production for (luckily) an internal facing, but customer impacting, web application.
It was only the login page they were changing. I backed up the original, copied the new file into place, and marked my task complete.
Then I went and read the details on the incident. Someone discovered that if you supply ANY valid username and leave the password blank, you're in! Put the wrong password and you're blocked, of course. But blank? You must be legit!
Curious, I looked at the timestamp on the original file I had backed up to see how long it had been like this.

While coding in C, I once forgot to add a semicolon at the end of a while loop polling a register value.
The logic required me to make it zero as soon as it read non-zero and continue the rest of the process. Hence the 'while' that missed the semicolon ended up being a single instruction assignment to the same volatile register that I kept polling. This caused synchronisation issue with the FPGA, and my code got stuck in an uncertain infinite loop.
Took me 2 days and a silly, yet valid question from my teammate to figure out the cause of this stupid bug.8 -
So, the other day, my teacher told me not to use goto in C#, with only the reason that "it is bad".
Okay teacher, I'm going to continue using it until you give me a valid reason. For example for making one loop instead of two. .-.24 -
"Finished" my first PWA today. I bet most of you think PWAs are stupid for valid reasons but I wanted to try something new. And I'm quite pleased with the result even though it's only a simple todo app. Wrote everything from scratch, no dependencies/frameworks/libraries! 😊

STOP sending me fucking videos of the bug you are experiencing. I don't get paid as much as I do to sit around and watch your stupid fucking screen captures for 37 minutes just to find 30 seconds of meaningful information to reproduce something you could have put in a paragraph and emailed to me.
Either you meet me halfway and actually understand the expected outcome and how it differs from what you experience enough to verbalize it, or I ain't fucking fixing your shit. For fucks sake, a 40 minute screen recording with no audio does NOT count as a valid reproduction.3 -
How many times do you mistype "git status" a day?

We pay 10's of 1000's of $/£ to these companies for support and either they don't get back to us or don't listen to the problem or come up with dumb suggestions. More often than not you get a valid answer on Redit or openstack before the supplier has even understood the problem.3

So I just had a bit of a shower thought. Suppose you could get the linguists to break a language down and define all the rules that make up that language as if it were a protocol - exceptions included. If you get an arbitrary string of text, could you match against those rules, then break that down to the information it contains, and use that information against a new rule set to construct a new valid sentence containing the same information. Would you just have made the ultimate translator?16

Decided it was high time to give windows the boot, other than the very rare gaming I do there seemed to no longer be a valid reason to keep it. So off I went, kubuntu looked nice, but after 2 hours I determined it did not like me much. No matter how much I google, could not find out why it would not pick up sda in the installers drive selection.
So figured, last try, grab the Ubuntu ISO and booted with that, and what do you know, 5 min later I am installing my software....1 -
So they are back, wanting another quick PR approved.
The PR:
```
switch value !== "" {
switch inputStatus {
| Valid =>
switch inputData {
| Ok(a) => a !== 0.0 ? false : true
| Error(_) => true
}
| _ => true
}
}
| false => true
}
Using the console to print out variables is a perfectly valid method of debugging for new developers: often, it can help you resolve the problem faster than using a debugger.2
Today I took the time to learn the basic SQL(ite) and just finished learning in depth about the art of querying.
I just had to do this, because I am very unsatisfied with the way we learned it in school. Almost literally only translating the words CREATE, TABLE, SELECT, FROM, WHERE, UPDATE, DELETE in MySQL.
Funny, irrelevant fact: Before I could download the meme below I encountered this beauty of an errorlog:
Developers who think complex code is good.
"Oh, lookie here, I can swizzle methods and inject dependencies in the runtime!"
"Although we have no valid use case, let's use dependency injection and follow the commandory stateor patterns because I watched a video."
Spent the afternoon listening to a colleague rant about Python's json.dumps not producing valid JSON, churning out single quotes. Turns out he was trying to encode a STRING that contained data that looked like JSON, instead of a dictionary of objects - which he swore it in fact was.2
Linux or Windows - still a problem for inexperienced computer users.
I was an IT professional for 35 years but haven't looked at a line of code for 10 years. And it certainly looks different today -
I have trouble using my smart Phone. I have always disliked the intimidation tehniques practised by Microsoft over the years. When
I was running OS2 in the 90's I couldn't get any software for it because MS had persuaded the developers not to release any OS2 versions until Chicago (AKA WIN95) was released. I was forced to use Windows for years until I finally decided to try Linux. Linux
is a great answer but unfortunately unless you are a current programmer there seems to be some situations that force you to maintain a version of Windows (setting up devices, Printers and developed software). Now that UEFI has been introduced as the standard in new PCs it is very difficult just to install and run Linux. So as WIN10 (the most invasive and slow running Windows to date) is the only "Valid" OS - MS is still dictating what we can and can't do. I decided to sell my new PC and pick up an old BIOS PC so that I could run linux and Win 7 to accomplish
my needs. How long can this go on? When will Linux be a "valid" Operating System. And when will a non-programmer be easily able to setup his hardware and find necessary software to run on Linux.9 -
I've always thought I was somewhat lazy about not caring about plaintext password in RAM in WPF (or whatever) but then this guy made a super valid point...
I really think a hacker would just keylog at that point rather than trying to read your obscure program's memory for your password... especially if they have access to raw memory...3 -
"Manual testing is often quick and easy and satisfying – you can directly test your application, one can see the results immediately on your screen, and one can interact with the application “for real”, instead of in the sometimes-awkward scripted/mocked mode of unit tests. It’s a very natural instinct.
However, it’s also largely-wasted effort! A manual test only verifies the current state of the code base. As soon as you make a change, you’ve started to invalidate the results. If, however, you take the effort to encode the test in code as an automated test, it continues to be valid indefinitely into the future."
Spent the entire morning updating a SQL query.
Client wanted to have different expiration times for different products. So the full package would be 1 year of access and a module would only be 6 months. Then when you renew your account the renewal is 1 year if you have the full package else it's 6 months.
The query takes 0.7s to run and left joins 3 tables. Only to return about 100 results. Still it's faster than the guy who wrote the original query which just dumped the hole db into memory then looped through it appending valid entries to a new array. -
Fucking fuck sonarcloud and everything about it. Part of the build pipeline for us to deploy code is to ensure that 90% of the code is covered by a unit test. Great in theory, horrible in practice. You think you've written enough tests that actually add value and test a valid piece of functionality but NO, sonarcloud throws a fucking fit because you're at 89.888 then your branch is going nowhere. Because everyone else gets to this stage and writes just enough tests to get the coverage to 90.01% then it becomes a stand off of who will break first; the code coverage threshold or your mental state.4
Important rule of programming: don't swallow exception and provide details for troubleshooting.
Visual Studio: The project file contains a property value that is not valid.8 -
In a helper for a testing environment there was a flag called CheckLayoutConf. The documentation stated: if set checks if the layout configuration is valid and fixes it. I was curious about the validation and fixing mechanisms, so I looked into the code. But if the flag is set, then the layout configuration is just deleted, so in the next start of the program a new default layout configuration is created. Nice "validation" and "fixing" you for there, I thought to myself.
Writing a full interpreter for a pseudo-assembly language.
It's kinda fun but the things a bit of a cunt of a problem because I only did this once before almost a decade and a half ago.
getting just the right format and deciding on the syntax is a slog. Just need something thats quick and sufficiently expressive because I'm not writing the assembly myself, I'm generating the assembly code that runs through the interpreter, so it has to be valid under a lot of conditions. -
"in Windows I know where all the things are..." is not a valid excuse to hate on the OS...
I never liked YAML. But lately, I'm starting to dislike it more and more.
I mean, wtf is that?
- digest YAML input -- a valid YAML
- digest JSON input -- a valid YAML
A language that embeds another language.
Can it be any more confusing..?
Sure it can. the
```
script:
- echo "John said: hello there"
```
will fail YAML linter, because, even though I used quotes, yaml sees `echo "John said` as an object key
I think I'm yet to find more nonsense with YAML. And eventually, I'll grow to hate it.8 -
Ok so I'm taking a developer survey, and since this is the best community of devs I know I'm taking it here first. This is for research purposes attempting to draw parallels between thing such as favorite language and favorite editor, tabs vs spaces and years of development experience, etc.
My dumbass colleague thinks the best idea to a Restful API backend is to store some kind of session based on the token.
It'd be great if that remained as an idea instead of this 11 month-old system he built before I got in.
MOTHERFUCKER.
Yes, it does mean that if the server boots for whatever reason, everyone has to login again to get a valid token LOL6 -
Does anyone else find Stack Exchange exhausting?
Windows is so magical. I mean it doesn't support syslog which is in a way essential in large environments. Today my coworker told me about a tool named nxlog which has the function to send log messages from windows directly to a central syslog server. It can also read files... well theoretical because nxlog does not accept ":" as a valid character... cya C:\something2
Teach data structures by showing how they're used in real life situations. Don't make us do some nonsense puzzle shit. For example, a friend of mine is learning stacks/queues right now and his assignment is to build a simple HTML parsing algorithm to determine whether an HTML file is valid. This shows the student a practical use of the data structure and reinforces that this shit actually does get used in real life.
Today I learnt something, I wish I learnt this earlier (I'm 25 now , it is late?).
What I learnt:
1. Never out -shined your superior, as it naturally stir up all sorts of resentments , envy, insecurities and possibilities of getting you replace by someone level intelligent. Because superior feel threatened.
2. Never try to fake what you don't know, and real to what you know. (As I saw someone faking themselves as someone who they are not, they eventually manifested tonnes of shit to themselves.)
So is what I learnt is actually make sense and valid? or just an opinion?4 -
I just released my first NPM package that is actually functional and used in a private project (https://npmjs.com/package/@lbfalvy/...) and I have to say, the quality of debug tooling for Node is abysmal. I spent 4 hours just on Webpack's "Field browser doesn't contain a valid alias configuration" error which simply means "package not found", and then getting Rollup to output a working compiled javascript _and_ a d.ts was its own day-long ordeal.4
With an attitude like that, please piss off in the opposite direction. I hope we never cross paths again, you arrogant prick.6 -
We kinda feel the feature you lead was messy because even though you brought up valid use cases and we decided to postpone the development of those till the next release, the user wanted them and we pressured you to get it done in a couple of days…which lead to a slightly buggy less than perfect release…so yeah, even tho you saved our asses for secretly starting development of those extra use cases beforehand we won’t showcase it as a successful release.
What makes free ssl "Unsuitable for e-commerce websites", Please read to end to see my view point.
From Namecheap:
Free Certificates are domain validation only which means they don't certify the identity of the website owner, they simply ensure a secure connection. Customers can't be sure of the integrity and trustworthiness of the website owner. If you need to secure credit card and personal information on e-commerce websites, free certificates aren't the answer. It's important your customers trust your business is safe enough to hand over these details. To gain this trust, you need a certification of your authenticity, which you can only get with a (paid) Business Validation or Extended Validation SSL Certificates.
https://namecheap.com/security/...
* "To gain this trust, you need a certification of your authenticity"
~ But isn't that just Domain Verification and other Extras, What justifies somebody or business's authenticity? Tax Id, Valid Address, Nobody is going to study the ssl cert to make sure that amazon.com is a valid business and has a tax Id.
* "domain validation only which means they don't certify the identity of the website owner,"
~ Wouldn't this just be the domain validation test that is required when using services like LetsEncrypt using Certbot etc, or are we referencing back to this idea that they look for a Valid Tax Id sort of thing?
* "If you need to secure credit card and personal information on e-commerce websites, free certificates aren't the answer"
~ Why is the paid version going to do double encryption, is the CA going to run a monitoring tool to scan for intrusions like a IDS or IPS? (disregard the use of DNS Validation being in the picture)
Am I missing something, this just seems like well crafted text to get people to buy a cert, I could understand if the encryption was handled differently, Maybe if they checked the site for HSTS or HTTPs Redirect or even, They blocked wildcard SSL before and now with the paid its included, but overall it doesn't sound like anything special. Now I'm not just picking on namecheap because domain.com does the same.14 -
I hate it when managers and team members don't utilise JIRA as the one source of truth.
When you move your card into the Review column, set the assignee to `unassigned` so that people know to pick it up. It's so much easier to understand the state of it !
"But then we don't know who's worked on it" - is NOT a valid reason to leave the original author as the assignee. It just leads to work not being reviewed. -
Asp.net core. There's a page with the users list and invite form. The invite form opens automatically on page load, if the viewmodel isn't valid. So the invite button opens the quack'th page of the table.
Someone please explain to me how error messages such as
There are days I like to pull my hair out and create a dynamic 4D map that holds a list of records. 🤯
Yes there's a valid reason to build this map, generally I'm against this kind of depth 2 or 3 is usually where I draw the line, but I need something searchable against multiple indexes that doesn't entail querying the database over and over again as it will be used against large dynamic datasets, and the only thing I could come up with was a tree to filter down on as required.6 -
I upgraded a Linux server one time and data that was serialized in yaml stopped being parsed properly.
It turns out the libyaml people decided to change how hashes were handled, which made any previous hashes come back as blank.
A whole database of valid data in dev was coming back invalid in prod. It was maddening.
It took a day to figure out the problem and how to update the data to the new format in rails.
I now serialize in json.11 -
It never ceases to amaze me just how big 64 bit memory space is. It's so unrealistically big that on contemporary processors you can't address the middle and the size of that dead spot (the number of high bits that must be the same in a valid address) is barely worth mentioning.1
Sup: You're using Salesforce Commerce Cloud, requests might be blocked through their firewall
Me: I don't think so, here are some sample requests and responses I just created. The object returned matches the one in your API Doc.
Sup: This isn't a system controlled by us, no support.
Me: So how in the world can it be you don't control your own endpoint?
Seriously, if you don't want to help, next time just say fuck you...5 -
Why the fuck does microsoft feel the need to be different?
One small example is VBA (Visual Basic for Applications).
When calling a function iw does not allow you to use brackets.
Example: Funct (arg1, arg2) is not valid but Funct arg1, arg2 is.
If you want the damed brackets you'll have to use call.
Call Funct ( arg1, arg2)
because after the first function is called, functions within that as arguments need to have the brackets...9 -
Important thing I learned is not to listen to devs who suggest to learn a framework because its pointless
If i ask should i learn react or angular, some will say angular some react, and both have valid arguments why
When i branch to react and ask if i should learn nextjs or nuxtjs the same thing will happen
No matter if the arguments are valid or not people will prefer a framework they have been biased towards
All frameworks have cons and pros there is no such thing as "the one" perfect framework
No matter how framework is good people will always find a reason to take a shit on it
So from now i wont ask IF i should learn framework X, I'll ask for the order in which to learn it
For example i Know i want to learn A for whatever reason, should i first learn framework B or C?
I dont need your subjective opinion to tell me how B or C sucks and i should do D instead of A5 -
That feeling when you are about to add a new feature to a project and when you start reading the spaghetti mess the previous developer puked when he/she was monkeying around, your blood pressure goes up, you lose a bit more hope in humanity, you start thinking about buying a gun, and start theorizing how torture could potentially be a valid recourse in some cases.3
First post on devRant... Aaaaand it's university hw... I can't wrap my head around this...
So, the problem is: I have to implement writing and printing 64 bit decimal integers (negative and positive with 2s complement) in NASM Assembly. There are no input parameters, and the result should be in EDX:EAX. The use of 64 bit registers is prohibited.
There is a library which I can use: mio.inc
It has these functions:
- mio_writechar (writes the character which corresponds to the ASCII code stored in AL to console)
- mio_readchar (reads an ASCII character from console to AL)
It also has to manage overflow and backspace. An input can be considered valid or invalid only after the user hits Enter... It's actually a lot of work, and it's just the first exercise out of 10... 😭
The problem is actually just the input - printing should be easy, once I have valid data...
Please help me!3 -
It makes my blood boil when my colleagues (who have been here for ages) know that maintaining dependencies in code is important but don't even action it because they give the excuse of having no time or the pressure of finishing it on time.
So we used to build these awful "promotion" pages for a leading manufacturer in the area. Because the website was old as dirt, there was no CMS and everything was static html using Coldfusion for a few include files like for the nav and such.
Every year we would get a new project to tweak the promotion details a little, and change the year from 2011 to 2012, etc.
My predecessor put the digit "1" in an HTML file called year.html, then included it like:
"valid from January 1 though December 31, 201<cfinclude template="year.html">..."
Why? Just why? And if you're going to use include files, for Pete's sake at least use the proper .cfm file extension!1 -
Play Picross.
...Pretty much that's how I come up with the "bright" idea of making a generator for it. It works but it generates valid hard-to-solve maps (I like randomized Picross but my script's is...hurrgghh....)2 -
If you somehow, someway, for any reason didn’t know it, emails are valid action attributes for HTML forms.
Yes.
You can submit forms to emails, and it works for ages now. Backend isn’t needed.6 -
How does it always go to this...
It is a rare occasion I get to be the only human being at home during evening time, so I really should make the most out of it (my own space and peace is really important to me, so living with another human being is exhausting, no matter how much I love them), yet I find myself yet again slouching on the sofa trying to figure out what to do and commenting on rants while time flies by and I find the hour so late there's no point in starting to do anything anymore...
What a waste of perfectly valid oxygen..2 -
You know i was just thinking to myself how most of the valid applications for most forms of technology are essentially related to communications, optics, number crunching, and data storage.
and mostly the only things we could trust would be used for military or intelligence purposes.
and most of the things we can trust have already been developed for the government.
so the moral of the story is support your local militia group or warlord if you want a job. because every other application is just a rehash.
on a lighter note most of the things hobbyists would do require more people than they have and/or more investment than they can afford.3 -
I am preparing for interviews and brushing up on my algorithms. I understand what BFS and DFS do, but trying to transform the word
CAB to DOG
I am getting very discouraged when it comes to these "Medium" problems (or at least like this). I don't know how to approach them. Reading the solution just feels like cheating and I should be able to get there by myself.
Can anyone help me not feel discouraged? I just feel very shitty right now.3 -
How difficult is it to create a custom 401 page in apache while requiring basic auth for the web root. I cant work out how to allow just the file /401.php
I keep getting:
Additionally, a 401 Unauthorized error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Any suggestions?
I've tried the following
ErrorDocument 401 /401.php
AuthName "Site Under Construction - Dev Only"
AuthUserFile /etc/apache2/.htpasswd
Building a site in Foundation 6, and there's a form where users may need to add new possible entries to a pool of valid choices, so I've got a second form that loads in a modal below the main form.
The second form loads fine, but when I try to use AJAX to submit the form and process things without leaving the page, Foundation stops working.
jQuery(document).ready() breaks it.
Just doing jQuery('form.ajax_form').ajax() without the .ready() wrapper breaks it, too.
Going to just wall it off as a beta feature for now, but if anyone has any idea why it isn't working, I'm all ears. -
I missed my scrum today. Missed the team meeting with VP, he asks everyone what are they working on, a good way to get in touch with peers.
Reason being, when I was sleeping the family started screaming in the morning for 2 hours they went on. I got little stressed and my eyes are still swollen.
Is it the valid reason not attending the meetings. I'm working for a promotion and 1 day in 2 weeks miss my scrum due to some reasons. What do you people think, should I stop struggling for promotion now and find another job?4 -
i had a project in a networking class where the provided code was meant to act as a proxy (aka just passing bytes around), but because of the implementation, every byte had to be a valid unicode character
Lessons from a really big project I will almost certainly finish:
When specifying a program, a lot of inputs become valid which have few to no real use cases, simply because they logically follow from the requirements.
When implementing a specification, some narrow use cases become unexpectedly difficult to handle.
It's important to recognize the intersection and reject it. -
Quirk of C++ (also C I think)
The SIM card saga goes on:
To verify yourself, you need to go to some postal office and show them your ID and stuff. Not that this is complicated or anything (well actually, it is. Welcome to 2018 in Germany. We use more papers than potheads for the simplest shit), but you need to have a valid ID. Valid as in NOT EXPIRED. What the fuck. Why does my ID expire. Do I stop existing 3 years after getting it? What does it mean if it is, why is it culpable to have your ID expired. And who gets charged for having none, I mean obviously my ID doesn't identify me anymore?
What the hell man. I don't exist for 6 months now. Am I law free as not identifiable entity or how does it work?
And now the real question:
We got something called Bafög in Germany. Basically you get a bit money while studying. (I still work tho, I don't get really much from it.)
To apply for it, you need some tax number, which seemingly can be seen as a proof of my existence and my identity.
Why is this enough, why don't I need a valid ID there?
Germany is weird man. On the one hand government is all social and you get help if you need it but on the other hand you need to sacrifice 17 virigins to apply for said help..2 -
I just had to drill an error reporter through the entire Orchid codebase for multiple fatal error reporting. The caller constructs a reporter and passes it into the interpreter, various internal interpreter functions put errors into it and return meaningless but valid substitute values, then the caller checks the reporter for recorded errors and avoids using the return value if there were any.
I got a really really fast computer from my previous employer with a valid windows 10 license (Enterprise) as a farewell gift when I left them in December 2016.
Yesterday my 3 year old daughter magically entered the Windows Activation window and entered a bogus key.
Since my previous boss doesn't work there anymore and you have to log into the corporate domain to re-enter a valid corporate key.. I was forced to buy a valid key.
Well, at least now the license is mine. But it was expensive...3 -
Our software outputs some xml and a client has another company loading this xml into some data warehouse and doing reporting on it. The other company are saying we are outputting duplicate records in the data.
I look and see something like this:
<foo name="test">
<bar value="2" />
<bar value="3" />
</foo>
They say there are two foo records with the name test..
We ask them to send the xml file they are looking at. They send an xlsx (Excel!) file which looks like this:
name value
test 2
test 3
We try asking them how they get xlsx from the xml but they just come back to our client asking to find what we changed because it was working before. Well we didn't change anything. This foo has two bar inside it which is valid data and valid xml. If you cant read xml just say so and we can output another format! -
Hi all. at the moment I work in a medium-sized company, but I have enough work to do, and now we have a problem with databases and our system administrators can’t handle it, and I was instructed to find a reliable company that will either deal with what we have or it is possible that our databases can be transferred On another platform, a real specialist administrator is generally needed. thanks in advance.6
The highlighted lines are a part of a flask app I'm writing in Python2(not python3 because I'm a bit too lazy to fix few dependency errors). All functions work as expected and all templates are rendered individually, and routes are all defined. check_date checks for invalid dates like 32Jan, 2018. It returns 0 if date is valid. add_data basically returns 0 if it decides to add user data into the database(db).
The problem is that line 60 renders but lines 54,57 don't. Any ideas as to what might be going wrong.?
PS: I'm building this app for learning and not for a production environment...1 -
Tip: when doing transactions, don't pay as cash even if they tell you it is a requirement. Tell them you will pay via cheque or via bank transfer with a contract first with a seal from an attorney. You must have a valid copy first of the contract before doing payments. Also, get a photo of 2 valid IDs the person you are doing transactions. They require you personal infos and IDs? Me: "How could I handle all these conditions? Would I be somehow able to implement them in the database so my code could just grab it there?"
Mentor: "No, that would be impossible"
Me: "Oh how about I just save them as a valid question in the db and the user will have to answer!"
Mentor: "No, you're supposed to automate that process for the user."
Why is my test not failing? The actual and the expected json is completely different? What the fuck!?!
It says:
static::assertJson($expected, $actual);
right there.
Oh wait.
Nevermind.
`static::assertJson` only checks for any VALID json string that I always provided in with my own expectation m)
Use `assertJsonStringEqualsJsonString` instead.
What.
Who needs meaningful defaults.
(I would claim that `assertJson` should be defaulft for string equalness, and assertValidJson should be for any Json validation. But you are free to disagree.)4 -
Every time I am tired of writing default values for optional values (values that can be nil but HAVE to have some default value unless they break the app / program I just tell it to be any valid value instead of nil,and if it’s nil the app / program crashes the fuck up.
I test it by feeding it ONLY valid data.
Irresponsible, I know, but none of my projects have passed testing phases and all of them never really finished development.1 -
So it's been 4 months and my struggles with Power bi continues. The .net developer I once remains only a bleak memory.
So yesterday the client thought about securing reports, I appreciate the step and suggested embedding them in SharePoint Web parts and securing the access from the desktop app. The client wasn't thrilled with my suggestion as his clients might not have SharePoint, valid point. Instead he wants me to create a small web app with a login page to share the public web url of the reports.
He can't trust client by giving them direct urls but will trust them to login first and then have the url....1 -
Dear frontend dev,
if you can't check whether a variable is defined or not, why do i have to change the back end to accept urlparam='undefined' as valid and replace it with your default value in my backend? Why are you afraid of 40X's? You should be interested in the bugs of your code.
It feels awful to have a middleware in place catching all errors and replacing them with empty 200 responses 😭. All of this because you don't fucking ensure your variables exist before use.3 -
JsonLint ParsingException "composer.json does not contain valid JSON" is an incorrect statement. The file contains 99% valid JSON except for 1 incorrect character which is correctly pointed out as an "Invalid string, it appears you have an unescaped backslash at: \-dev".
And why do people in tutorials keep calling it "Jay's on" instead of "Jason" like "Jackson"? I can only imagine what they would call the "King of Pop" musician ... "my cal Jack's Onn"?6 -
When you work on a project for months, the newly appointed tech lead says "we all (him, the boss and other colleagues not involved in this project) looked at your code and decided that it should be dropped and we are starting from scratch again....now I'm not against code review (which we never did) so I welcome the input but allow me to vent my frustrations about how this is being done. Also to have a review & verdict without me being present?
So I ask what was so wrong:
* You changed the database structure. Valid, I tried to make your db an actual db with relationships, so I added some foreign keys, delete fields that were never used, all because they told me to use an ORM.
* You used to much logic in setters, validation etc, valid again but this would be something we could look at and fix imho.
* You are passing classes in your constructor, valid I wanted to use DI to make unit testing possible. Ohh but I don't like unit testing so I don't see the point and it makes it to complicated was the response.
So not only was the project cancelled, the new iteration is being developed without me, I'm shunned from all meetings. Ohh and from what I see they are now using 5 tables instead of 25 and completely started the db model from scratch...5 -
What is your worst project you have worked on ?
Ans) my self, I have worked on CMS project called as Ellis pathway, which is my ever worst project I have worked on. It was developed on the language called omnimark, have you by any chance heard about it ?. Moreover it was used to process XML and the worst nightmare would when XML is 500mb and it is not valid after process. I have spent shit lot of hours fixing XML manually.. I literally fucked my self there. Thank God I somehow managed to quit and move on. -
This partnership gives Google advertisers access to Unity’s mobile gaming network through Universal App Campaigns (UAC). This means Unity mobile app developers will be able to monetize with Google’s ads without any additional required development work.
To date, the partnership has resulted in video completion rates of 87.3% compared to the average benchmark of 32.5% (Source: Moat Analytics Benchmarks: Q4 2017). Furthermore, Unity has consistently scored 97.8% for valid and viewable rates, well above in-app benchmarks of 54.7%, providing a brand-safe environment for advertisers while also creating value for developers and gamers alike.2 -
Javascript is my main tool at work right now, Typescript to be precise. It never ceases to amaze me, I guess as most of you.
What I've encountered recently still doesn't make sense to me but it seemingly works:
function a(){
// other stuff ...
}
someString can be a string or undefined, someFunction can be a function or undefined.
How is that valid Javascript, without an assignment? Haven't found any explanation yet.22 -
I couldn't find an answer to it online.
I know WG supports roaming, so switching a connection to a different route.
But how does WG handle multiple valid routes, before a connection can be established?
Eg, when I'm at home I could have 3 valid routes.
Connecting over LAN.
Connecting over public IP of the router.
Connecting to a vserver, using it as a bridge to connect to my server, if it's behind a firewall.4 -
Assert ref != NULL rather than conditional check it more often.
Silently returning / ignoring is way worse if object was meant to be valid.
The caller should deal with it. (As abstract as possible preferably...)
Obviously there's places where conditional is necessary.. but silent null checks can cause more pain than good. -
I have to reimplement a couple of complicated OOXML parsers (docx, pptx, vsdx, etc). Actually, I’ve implemented them in Python ~5 years ago but now I have to improve them and add support for nested/embedded formats and some other stuff. As you could expect, none of the OOXML validators are valid themselves, so it's better to have an MS product installed locally, just to get reassured that everything works fine and the parser produces the format that's recognizable by M$.
So I’ve bought a key on eBay (yep, I’m not paying full price for this shit: release valid validators first, bitches; don't make me buy things I don't need). The key is valid, everything is fine. But no, you just cannot have a link to download this fucking installer, no-no-no-no. We won't give you a link until after you enter a key. FEEL DEPENDENT. OBEY.
But I digress. Here's their MANUAL about DOWNLOADING the INSTALLER:
So, what's wrong with it? Oh, just a minor misunderstanding. They always give you a link to download an exe-installer. Even if you use Safari.
