Fuck those customers...
Wednesday: Sprint Planning
Customer: We want those two datepickers in the job application form to be text fields instead
Me: Okay, this will take some time bc I have to change the data structure too.
Customer: Okay do that. this is urgent
Thursday: implemented and merged
Monday: QS approved it
Yesterday (Tuesday) in the morning:
Customer (via Slack as a PN): Hey! Why are those fields no datepickers anymore? We want to show that to our boss this Friday! And why do we have this small icon on the right side of the field (Chromes autocompletion)
Me (to PM): Could you please tell them to think before creating tickets or writing some shit?2
Thats gonna be a nice Monday.. I am back after two weeks of holidays and still have a little hangover. My co-worker, who should be responsible for my hand-over is spontaneously in holidays for two weeks and the PM is sick. Typically I start working as early as possible, what's around 7:30. Now I have to wait for another co-worker who can bring me up to date, but he will arrive at round about 10. So I think I will read those 30 PRs which were merged the last two weeks...
Currently I feel like the personification of the term "thrown into cold water"
After I finished my bachelors degree, I started working on first of april. The first full-time job I had. Therefore I had some training in the first 2 weeks and after that I joined a project after easter. Fast forward two sprints:
Currently I am the only dev in that project, tomorrow is sprint review with the clients and I have to present like 5 tickets of the 10 planned for this sprint. Of my 8 working hours a day, 4 are planned for my self-training and 4 for tickets. Actually its more like 6 for training/reading/understanding the code, because its mostly a whole CRM I am supposed to develop... PM said another dev will join the project in one or two weeks. I hope the client didn't slay me till then..2
I am about to build a new server for personal purposes. My current one is called Thanos. Now I am thinking about a new name. I wish to choose a name with a literary or cineastic reference. Currently my only idea is Prometheus but i am not sure about that.
What do you guys think? Have you any ideas?10
I am a dev for about 8 years now and I just posted my very first question on StackOverflow and I am actually interested how this will go... I actually found everything on there until I got to this problem this week and never thought I would need to use a StackOverflow account for myself.
Wish me luck17
It is really nice to be in this Industry I think. Currently I am writing on my Bachelors Thesis and applying for my first full time Job. I was invited to interviews by every Company I applied to. Except of one that hasnt answered till now, the 4 other companies wanted me to work for them. After kicking the 2 bad ones (first has only the legal Minimum of Holidays and the other one wanted to pay me extremly low), I have to contracts in front of me. One paying me a Little less but has 3 days more off per year and the other one paying me better and they let me talk About more Money earlier. Both giving me a new Notebook, phone and a Bonus depending on the total earnings of the Company. I am really struggeling which Company to choose bu I think free time is much more worth than a Little more mony5
Yeah! The first Goal for 2020 is just reached.
Applied last Monday for a backend Job, got invited on Tuesday for a technical interview on thursday. the interview went great and 20 mins after i left their Offices and still were on my way home, i got a call and they invited me for Friday to talk Business with their CEO. So now i have a contract in just 5 days for a great Job, i am really Looking Forward to.1
Me in the bus to Office
me: *press the stop button*
me: *see my Station driving pass me*
me: Sorry? I pressed that button?
bus Driver: Oh! You wanted to Exit?
me (thinking): no, this is a unit test and your unit just failed….
me: uhm, yes? thats why I pressed that button...5
[Two collegues A and B are working on a complex regex together]
A: What does this fucker want?
A: Some dumb Client
A: [accepting call] you know regex?
A: Because thats what we working on for half an hour
B: What did he say?
A: He hung up
B: Perfect. So lets go on.6
So my Goals for 2020 are:
- finish my Bachelors degreee
- get a full time job as a backend dev
- build my own Server at home for dev, media Streaming/transcoding and gaming
and if I have enough spare time, I want to try to build my own voice assistant or at least a chat-bot assistant for my home. Fuck Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant.1
TLDR; Fuck those HR People
As I am near to finally finish my Bachelors Degree, I am searching for a Job to start my Career. For this my University has a yearly Event, where companies can present themselves and what Kind of Job offers they have for graduates. I had a real nice talk with a recruiter of a small Company that really fits my skills and sounded interesting. As I am a Little stresed bc of my Bachelors Degree, i wasnt able to send them my resume and stuff. But a few days later the women i talked to wrote a mail to me, that they are very interested in me and wanted to meet me at their place. Without asking me to send any docs. We decided that i will come over to them next week and then bring my resume. I was really happy bc this Job was still very interesting and i saw they pay good for their size on glassdoor.
BUT yesterday i got a mail from their Head of HR that the interview is cancelled bc they found someone else.
What? They hire someone (who is happy to get this Job now I hope) without even reading all the resumes of the interested? They asked ME to meet them and not the other way around. I have absolutely no idea how to react to this unprofessional behaviour…
So today we had a Skype conference with external devs about a database topic. In the middle of the call they wanted to present what they already did and opened up the browser. On a domain available for the general public. With our internal data they signed to keep safe.
Our manager stopped the call immediately and our lawyers are working on a lawsuit now.
Today after work I am getting two kittens for my gf and me. It is a suprise for her as she wishes to get a cat for like ever.
Now I thought she could Name one and I will give the other one a Name but except for Erwin (Schrödinger) I have no creative ideas. I`d really like to give him/her an IT related Name.
Big Company rant #2
As I said before I have no admin permissions on my working Notebook and everytime I want those, I have to call the inhouse support, make an Appointment and then they Access my Computer and type in their root Password. Of Course after I had explained them what I want to do nearly a hundred times.
next Thing is our custom Firewall. It is global in our Network and all the Computers have a custom Root Certificate for SSL installed, BUT this certificate seems to be not recognized by nearly every program I want to use. Git-Bash, npm, python/pip, docker, .. everywhere I have to manually install this cert, but most of the time I Need admin Rights to edit those.
After 3 weeks in this Company I thought I have everything correctly installed and configured.
But Company said no.
I received a mail over the Weekend which said my Notebook will be replaced because the one I had was an Interims device and they only waited for a new delivery of devices.
So now I am sitting here at my desk unproduuctive, configuring my Setup AGAIN7
I think I prefer to work for smaller companies... I started working in a startup while going to university. It was very chaotic and they paid low, but now while working for my bachelor thesis I am at big company and I am kind of fucked up by a lot more of things... It starts with the fact that I have no admin permissions on my notebook. Then I have to use Windows because legacy stuff. This is also the reason we have to use IE or sometimes Edge. I tried home office this week and after 2h in which I had a 1h phone call with the in-house support, where I tried to figure out why the company VPN doesn't Work on the company notebook, what finally won't work and I will get another notebook next week, I switched to my personal computer and wrote documentation as this was the only thing I could do. Next thing is the fact, that the IT building is actually a few meters in front of the actual company area. I have no access to this area but there is the cantina and the machines I am working with. So every time I want to go there, I have to ask a colleague to come with me to pass the controls at the entrance. I also noticed that my access card is only valid between 7:30 and 17:30 because reasons so I literally can't come early if I want to leave sooner.
All these things are so disturbing..4
My plan is to finish my Bachelors degreee by march, take a 2 month break, work on a few personal Projects I had no time because of University and earning Money on the side. Maybe one of those will work out to pay my bills but in the first place I just want to see if they will work. After those 2 months I want and have to work so in my break I will apply to a few companies.
But for my future I really think About freelancing but not Right after university
I was sitting in Office, reading some documentation today before I can leave for Weekend. Suddenly my co-worker next to my shouts fuck.
He is one of our database engineers and he got notified that one of the prod db Servers was on 100% and the storage was on 95% out of nowhere. So he checked that and someone else started a comparison between two large datasets.
Line by line.
Logging every cell result in a log file.
That resultet in a insanely fast growing lock file in the size of a few hundred Gigabytes.
So he looked up who did that stuff and tried to call him but it seems like the other dev leaved Right after starting his crappy script.
So he had to get his private number to call him so they could kill that script without Breaking the prod db…
Wow.. I just received a message from a recruiter for a Position as a WordPress Dev and because I was bored, I started reading the Job description and they wrote as a Benefit of their Company: "Thank God, its Monday! At our place, you will love to come to work even on mondays.
And thats it. No Explanation or other Benefits.
What do they think will happen? That i will read this crap and just believe them?2
Actually I learned a lot. But not those things that were teached but while studying I had a lot of time for personal projects.
At the university the biggest impact was to get to know dozens of people interested in coding
Its my current one. at uni we have to do one big project that takes around one semester and is a collaboration with an actual company. so we have the project to create an augmented reality app for the hololens for blind people to orientate in a room with acustic feedback, just like bats do.
So currently we are working with unity on a hololens and a htc vive we got from the company, we are working with.
Because I am nearly blind too, this is just a gazillion times more interesting and cool for me. Really looking forward to the resulting software and I really enjoy learning all the skills in AR and VR.5
So I just received the WiFi Route for my new apartment where I will move in with my girlfriend next week. This friday I will install this thing so everything will work when we arrive next week. So now I standing in front of the most important question:
How to call my network? Any suggestions? Maybe not that hard tech/coding relating bc I really don't want to explain it to everyone visiting me.
Thanks for your ideas!5
Just deleted Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. This shit took way to much time and personal data for absolutely no reason. Hope to use my phone not that much anymore in the future11
I absolutely hate release days..
Yes I am happy that it will never be a friday in my company but you can tell everyone at office that the page will be down for like half an hour and this a month before actually doing it and they still call you 20 times in that half hour while everyone at the IT department already knows about those important issues and we are already yelling at each other
at those days its really hard to stay strong and not start again smoking..
Got a new task today.
I don't really know what to do with it.
My boss just came to me.
Boss: You know that part of our app?
Me: Yeah but never used it and someone else wrote it
B: Yeah I know. You have to make it better.
B: Just make it better. Think about it.
So now I'm sitting here looking at that feature (which works perfectly for everyone using it) and have absolutely no idea what to improve with it7
Soooo in less than 2h I have the last try to pass my second math module at university. It’s an exam where I just have to speak with the prof
I fucking nervous cause my study will be terminated if I fail.
One the one hand I just want to work because my study is very annoying but on the other hand I’m in Germany where grades are everything
I want to pass but I am so nervous...7
Listen to some really good and fast music, take a (cold) shower and let the motivation kick back in while singing aloud.
Worked as expected yesterday whole learning maths for a exam tomorrow
I want to buy a server for private use for a long time and now I found a good offer on ebay for me. The problem now is:
How do I explain the need of a server to my girlfriend? She does not really sees any use for a private server at all and it still is a big amount of money we have to discuss. I want to host a media server on it, a backup server and a gitlab server for personal projects. Any other use cases I can explain to her? Really want this thing.
Gonna talk to her after work in a few hours about that topic.5
My boss just got a call from a client because he needed to install an outlook plugin for them.
In the call he needed to explain them how to install teamviewer like
Boss: just install the teamviewer software on your computer
Client: the what?
B: teamviewer. its a software giving me access to your computer to install the software
C. ok and how will i do that?
B: go to their website, download and install it
At this point he needed to explain them EVERY FUCKING 'next' button
in between they needed to switch to skype with a video call and my boss explained them 3 times to click the green phone to accept the call.
at ome point when there was a delay while installing the client really asked my boss (a senior web dev) to fix their printer.. I looked at him with a huge grin and never saw him with such a fucked up face.
At the end he ended the call telling them he has a meeting now and they need to call back later (then they will get a real support call they have to pay for)
btw the "meeting" is going to McDonalds for lunch
I really had to control myself to not laugh out loud while this call4
Because of the current debate I'm starting to get more into all the cyber security and privacy stuff.
So now I am searching for a password manager.
Do you have any recommendations for me?
Or maybe some additional tools I really need to use?
(Got PGP for mail, signal as my new messenger, a vpn and tor for now)4
