My new co-worker, a Jr. developer who started 2 weeks ago told me; "I am starting to see in my dreams the solutions of my tasks."
"Welcome to the club.", I said. :P3
New employee joining the company next week. Where should she start on JS?
New employee is joining the company I work for next week, and I have the responsibility to teach, train and give her tasks. It is my first time training someone so I really have no idea how to do this. :P
She knows a little bit of Vanilla JS. Our projects are built with AngularJS (v1) with ES6, Webpack & Babel, ReactJS & jQuery. I want to put her on the project using AngularJS.
What order of learning do you recommend? VanillaJS, AngularJS & ES6? AngularJS & ES6? Or if you have any other suggestion, feel free to let me know.
Me: Hey SEO guy. I am updating our online store from Flask/jQuery in ReactJS.
SEO guy: That is amazing. Google LOVES ReactJS and it will crawl the site very fast.
SEO guy: Hey, did you change anything in the site because the site is not ranking anymore on Google. The URLs are dynamically generated in front end. Google does not like that.
ME: But you said that Google loves React. It took me nearly 1 month to migrate the code in React.
Serious question. And apologize if I sound stupid.
Why do people, especially here on devRant brag about Arch Linux?
What is so special about this OS?
What does this OS do better than Ubuntu, Debian, Kali Linux, Fedora etc?13
I think UPS' Api documentation and service must be the worst documented and build API I have ever seen from a corporate.
1. The developer website is a mess. A total mess. You can barely find the API type you are looking for.
2. When you get the API and download the documentation, the files, .pdf etc is still a mess. Pages long that most are craps.
3. Each request returns Status Code 200. Even if it is an error. This blew my mind.
4. Each request, based on error type or based on tracking activity returns different JSON schema.
For example, the JSON Schema for a shipment in transit is different from JSON schema for a shipment that has been delivered. A shipment that has been returned, a shipment that required signature etc. They are different from each other.
5. And the worst. They do not provide with test tracking codes. I have found some on internet, but they do not work in development and production environment.2
Is it unprofessional if I write "No recruiters! Thank You." in my LinkedIn Summary? Because I get at least 3-4 messages a day from recruiters with a lot of buzzwords.19
Is is better to tell the interviewer that you are a solo developer in the current company? Or that you are a team of 2-3 people?
Just shower thoughts11
Every night and every time I shower I think if I will still have a job after I am 35-40 because I have heard that the companies are replacing old age developers with new ones.
It makes me very anxious and depressed every day.3
With `Back-End` he understands `the Dashboard`. The system that is used only from company's employees.
`Front-End`, the software that is used by our customers.
I have explained him many times that he was wrong, but he seems to use this term. And now I have to use these terms like him.9
Has anyone used YouTube iFrame API?
I do ask first here before going on SO.
I am trying to play a YouTube video in sync from 2 different computers.
Luckily YouTube iFrameAPI has an event called `onStateChange` that is fired every time a video is paused, played, stopped etc.
This is the scenario...
1. Host creates a session and sends the link to guest.
2. Guest connects with the host.
3. Host plays/pauses/goes to specific time in the vide the video. The video is synced on guest session.
Now I have to figure out how to sync when Guest does an action. The thing is, every time an event is triggered in Host, it sends the command to Guest. The guest obeys BUT THEN the event `onStateChange` is triggered on guest and sends the command to Host. It is an infinite loop that I cannot seem to figure out if the onStateChange is triggered from API or from User interaction.
What I have tried so far...
1. Global variables. No luck.
2. Disable the event handler when the guest is gets data from host and after it finishes syncing, activate the event handler. But the handler still triggers.
3. Timeframe. (an ugly one) . Checks when the last time that event was triggered. If it was less than 1.5 seconds (or other second), it does not send the commands to host.6
Just a legal question here.
Is web scraping legal in USA? I am asking here for the sole reason that I am sure that someone might have developed projects with web scraping.
I've heard that Walmart does it a lot.25
I have become the only thing I always hated in a developer. Building a project without a proper documentation.
As a solo developer in a company where I have to do database architecture, front-end, back-end, testing, NETWORKING (I am the most ignorant guy when it comes to networking), product design, there is no time for documentation.
But hey, I have structured the project, files and functions (with comment, parameters type and return type) properly and I understand what I've done even after 4-5 months without touching that specific project so I got that going for me which is nice... I guess.3
Has anyone had to start undergraduate/transfer studies a little bit late? Need help with CV/Resume.
So, I dropped out of University because I had to move to USA. And now I am applying for University here in Massachusetts. (transfer my studies to be precise)
I have worked since 2014 as a developer (currently working) and I want to know how to structure my CV/Resume for University.
Do I need a simple one just like when I apply for a job, or a detailed one 2-3 pages?
Thinking of applying at Boston University, Northeastern & UMass.
I have seen in a lot of forums (here, Imgur, reddit, LinkedIn etc) that there are a lot of developers without a job.
And most of them live in USA. I have not seen a person who is struggling to find a job in EU or some other place.
Why is this the case? In USA where the demand for developers is very high.
I read a post on LinkedIn: "40 INTERVIEWS and no one HIRED! Yet another friend telling me she can not find good talent. My thinking - If you interviewed 40 people and did not hire someone, then it's time to look in the mirror. The problem is recruiters and hiring managers are looking for the 'PERFECT" candidate. NEWSFLASH! There is no 'perfect' candidate. If you have someone with the right attitude and skill set, and they fit in with the team, why not HIRE them? There are so many qualified individuals still job searching. Yet I see the same jobs re-posted, over and over again, being left vacant for months. Who took a chance on you? Maybe it's time you a took chance on someone."
I don't think it is the "competition" because I see everywhere. I have seen entry-level or JR. open positions that are not filled for months.
It took me 1 month, sending nearly 20 applications every day to find a job in USA.
And the second one I got lucky. I applied in Europe and after some month I got transferred in offices in USA.
I do not know how true this is, but seriously, what's wrong with companies in USA that require the PERFECT candidate. Or is it something else?25
Went from "I fucking hate ReactJS" to "Holy fucking shit. I have been watching React tutorials for 6 hours straight without pause."6
I am going to rant about this here because there is nowhere else where I can "SCREAM".
My work process....
Working on a project that does not have mockups nor a plan. I am building as I go. Design, infrastructure, EVERYTHING. Because my boss is a "genius".
And the project goes like this....
1. Boss tells me to build something.
2. I tell him the functionalities and design.
3. Boss, "Figure out yourself and we will see how it goes".
4. Me, Builds something.
5. Boss does not like it and demands changes.
6. I make the changes.
1 year and a half for one project that is a simple e-commerce. Show the products, a search functionality, users sign in and can order and show their orders.
A simple page in which does not take time, but without a plan, without A FUCKING PLAN this project will go on forever.
I am losing my mind. I put on test and tell my boss to test it for bugs. He demands a meeting and tells me, "we need to add this".
OH FOR FUCKS SAKE. TEST THE SITE FOR BUGS YOU FUCKING USELESS THING. I WILL FIX THE BUGS AND THEN WE WILL TALK FOR NEW MODULES.
I am doing documentation, database infrastructure, front-end, back-end, testing (because my boss cannot do it. It took him 2 week to start testing for some things after asking him every fucking day "Did you test it", "Did you test it").
Maintaining out CRM for bugs and new modules and maintaining our company's website.4
Spent nearly 2 hours why the module/plugin on the system was not working. Delete the plugin. Get it from git. Nope. Restart all services, restart server. Still the same. No errors, nothing.
Realized that I had cloned the wrong git repository.
How do you find motivation to learn new things? I am not saying regarding new technologies or frameworks.
I am 26 and I am starting to continue University but I need to learn for TOEFL and SAT. (Long story short, I dropped out because I had to move to USA, and it was choosing USA or University.)
I am working as Software Developer here in USA, but I am preparing to study in University. IT is kinda difficult to find a job here without a degree and I got lucky that I have one.
I start learning for TOEFL, easy stuffs. Just learning how to prepare for it. After 30 minutes or less I zone out. Start thinking about other stuffs that are not related to anything. Daydreaming.....
I am thinking I might have ADHD, but still it is just a though and I do not want to go to doctor and get diagnosed.
Or I am just lazy and kinda depressed that I do not have motivation for anything.
So, I am asking you dear devranters, how do you find motivation for university?1
*2 days ago in a meeting*
Boss: "We need you to develop this, this .... *adds 10 tasks in Trello*
*1 day ago. less than 24 hours*
Boss: "So , what's new regarding the tasks?"
ME (angry): "You just gave me all those tasks less than 24 hours ago. What kind of news do you expect?"
*Boss leaving to his desk, laughing from embarrassment.*4
I am so bad at web designing (and hate it) that every time I start a personal project, 90% of the time that the project is not finished is because of designing. Of that fucking CSS.7
George Hotz, the guy who hacked iPhone and Playstation 3 back in the days has made a 11 hours straight coding session some months ago.
Let's assume I have a technical interview in Python. What are the question that you are going to ask me?
P.S. Asking this question for everyone. I have seen a lot of websites but still don't know what to read first so I am asking you.10
I am very frustrated today and I do not know where to "scream" so I will post this here since I believe you will know how I feel.
Here's the case...
I am developing an e-commerce web application where we sell industrial parts. So my boss told me on March that when we are going to show these parts, we should not show Part Number to visitors because they will steal our information.
Ok, this makes sense but there was a problem.
The Primary Key for these products in our internal system is a string which is the Part Number itself.
I told him on March that we have to come up with another unique number for all the products that we are selling, so this unique number will be the primary key, not the Part Number. This will be best because I will be dependent from the original Part Number itself. And in every meeting he said "That is not priority". So I kept developing the part using the original Part Number as primary key and hid is from the web app. (But the Part Number still shows on URL or on search because this is how my boss designed the app.)
I built the app and is on a test server. Until one of out employees asked my boss: "There is no unique number or Part Number. How are the clients going to reference these parts? If a client buys 20 products and one of those has a problem, how is he going to tell us which products has a problem?"
My boss did not know what to say, and later said to me that I was right and primary key was priority.
I really hate when a guy that knows shit from developing does not listen to suggestions given by developers.
FUCK MY LIFE!
I'm sorry if you did not understand anything.6
Got a job interview on about 2 hours. I am starting to panic because I have done only 2 job interviews in USA.
It is for a big corporation and I will conduct interview with 5 people... in .NET framework which I have not used for 1 year.
And I am terrible at remembering things and I am starting to panic so bad.6
I hate recruiters. Especially those who are being unprofessional.
P.S. I hope you can read it.5
