anyone know what the current status is on the pinephone is? Was thinking about preordering one if they're still scheduled to release soon2
With my self-loathing narcissism. Got this whole sorta yin and yang, counter balance thing going on. Pretty sure a drunken, celestial debate went on between the ram and the fish the night I was born.2
Any of you electronics gurus happen to know where I might find a 2 ghz bda for a decent price? Or another name to look it up by maybe?
Finally attempting to get to that diy signal booster project I was talking about last year but google and the duck are only bringing me back whole kits or 1ghz amps meant for wifi signals.
I said was gonna go to bed a little earlier tonight but I guess since somebodies beat me to it I might as well play another round...🤔13
That I'm going to be the oldest person in every stack of "junior" applicants anywhere I apply.
Worse, "its working" is rarely enough for me to be satisfied with something i've done to the point of publicly displaying it, so it's liable to be next year or the year after before my portfolio has enough projects in it to even be considered.
If that's the case I'll be pushing forty before I actually find a job. Hopefully my code won't look like a junior's by then and I'll advance fairly quickly but Im not naive enough to believe that I could just skip over that rung of the ladder entirely. Generally, practice only gets you so far in any field, the rest comes after you've actually worked in it.
Part of me is saying to just go the freelance route but that just involves a whole new list of insecurities based on no production and very little backend experience, so it's liable to be just as long before I'm comfortable taking on everything that a client would require me to do.
Even then I'll still have to figure out how to not rip myself off when I try to make them a quote. Judging from how it went with the mechanic service, that part will take a while to get right all on its own. I was so bad at quoting repair tickets that first year, people were routinely paying me more than what I asked them for because they knew I couldn't be charging enough. And I had worked in that field for several years already 🤦🏻♂️27
Neovim. For everything, even general word processing. Weird, I know, but I've got 2/3's an English degree that I hardly ever get to use so leveraging a spelling and grammar checker just seems like a waste.
As far as why neo over any other ide, easy. The bulk of what I'm doing is writing and editing text so to me it makes more sense to use the text editor I like and plug in the other few tools I occasionally need than it does to use something that includes everything else plus the kitchen sink but requires me to plug in the text editor that I want.
The reason I prefer neovim as a text editor is a nobrainer as well. It doesn't rely on auto-completion to be helpful and I don't have to press shift+ctrl/cmd/win+alt+six other buttons to navigate around the document. I also don't have to keep reaching for the mouse or arrow keys every 2 mins just to bring my hand back and feel around for the home keys again a split second later.
To me those are both unnecessary distractions and I'm not the type of person that needs any help getting distracted. With neovim my wrists can always rest in the same positions and there's no split second to stop and think "this button combination" and not the other three or four combinations that are almost identical. At the most I have to hold ctrl or shift with one other button, if anymore are required then the keystrokes are entered consecutively, not all pressed together like some fucked up game of keyboard twister.
I don't even have to reach for the mouse to do things like change key bindings or search the help documentation. Just a ":" then type whatever I need. If I can't remember exactly what the command is then there's tab to help me out, all I have to remember is the first couple of letters.
Much, much quicker than browsing through submenu upon submenu just to click what I already know I'm looking for. Sure, that's only the first few times, then I can generally remember which menu to go to, but only for routine things. Something rarely used, I'm going to spend a minimum five minutes looking for it no matter what. And that's only if the developers didn't decide to change the layout from the last time I used the tool. Not that most make changing layouts a habit, but it has happened on occasion.
Lastly, to wrap it all up, neovim let's me save my preferred configuration as its own file. If I switch workstations all I have to do is pull it down from my repo and place it in the correct path, whether the machine has neovim, vim or any of the other flavors. And if one of them is not on there, then vim-tiny is half a megabyte to download. Not that I change machines a whole lot, but it's still nice to have because I've got a dozen keys remapped and trying to use the defaults at this point is next to impossible.6
Ok so generally I try to avoid asking these on here, but I've ran into a problem that I can't figure out how to word in order to find a solution.
I cloned the vanilla breakout game from mdn a while back then made a svelte version removing the canvas api for svg's. It runs pretty smoothly using an animation frame, there's just one tiny problem. I used my old macbook for testing and have the ball speed set to what it would be for the first level if played on there. But play it on my new machine and it's like starting on level 100 (metaphorically, I haven't actually plugged in levels yet).
Is there a way to mediate the variation between the two? Without making the slower machine choppy. As it stands now anyone playing on a modestly performant machine is goin to have a significant disadvantage.10
Got woken up by a phone call from a recruiter today.
"Do have a minute to answer a few brief questions?".
"Sure thing," as i sleepily start fumbling for my cigarettes and stumble my way out onto the front porch.
I get out there and immediately this weird noise coming from the backyard. It's a 5ft geyser shooting up over the water well.
"So can you tell me the 4 pillars of oop?"
"Ummmm.... water, fire, wind and earth?!?"🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
A couple more similar questions answered sorta correctly and I think it became obvious I was a little distracted. The guy decides he's going to forego the rest and just send an assessment by email.
I hang up the phone and run back in the house to find the breaker for the well. Of course the box isn't labeled correctly so after flipping 2 or 3 of the wrong ones I finally just kill the master. Pump shuts off, along with everything else in the house. Oh well at least I can go back to sleep now...
How's everyone else's morning going?13
Inkscape why do you insist on being so difficult. I typed 350, not 350.00023, not 348.00000009 and not translate (0.00000000000000000000001) 🤦♂️3
To the dev at ziprecruiter that made "Degree" the only required education field, sincerely, fuck you.
If they're not more interested in what I actually studied then I don't want to work there anyway.
P.S. You forgot to invalidate whitespace, Dick5
Wow, for some people who are all stuck at home under quarantine you guys are kinda dead tonight. Almost feel like we need to make roll call just to check on everyone.
Anyway it seems like it would be rather patronizing to do a big speech again this year so I'll save it. However I do still feel obligated to note that old man winter has officially passed and spring is now upon us.
So if you thought to stop by the liquor store while you were out grabbing rations last week and you've managed to not drink it all by now then join me in saying a farewell to the fish, for she was a bitch this year, and let's give a toast to the ram, may his stubbornness bring about a bit of good news despite it all.
Well fuck, I gave ziprecruiter my email address, I guess there's no turning back now. It hasn't been ten minutes and I got a email telling me to finish the application for the listing I was looking at 🙄1
Anyone else find it annoying when people use sad face emoji's to indicate when options are turned off?
Like, it's ok little buddy. You don't have to be my default browser. That just means your special.4
Nope, shit's breaking down as much as it ever was. Me personally, I'm more likely to be stocking up on bug spray than I am hand sanitizer given that I usually encounter more mosquitoes than people. West Nile is as much of a thing here now as it ever was in the press. Plus bug bites in general are rather annoying so birds, stone 🤷♂️1
anyone else notice that npm has support for funding open source projects now? You finally have a way of tracking down and paying the devs that wrote all those shitty bloated packages you guys are always bitching about. No way this is going to get abused 🙄1
Thank you jesus, i can finally go get cigarettes.
Note to self: learn to grow tobacco before zombie apocalypse14
What the hell is the point of having your text editor autocomplete closing tags? It's not saving you any time if you have to type the closing tag to advance the cursor past it and moving your hands to the end or ctrl/cmd and arrow keys probably saves you even less. I could see it maybe if your ide is set up with an alternate hot key to handle jumping over, but do we really have to include this feature into all of our web applications where most of your typical editing shortcuts have been replaced by browser functions?
I'm probably in the minority, but seeing the character already there fucks up my train of thought. I can tune it out while I'm finishing whatever I was typing within (usually), but when it comes time to move on I see the expression closed and for a split second assume my cursor is past that point. Sometimes I'll catch myself before I actually start typing again, sometimes I don't, but either way it still causes an annoying pause that comes on nearly every line of code.22
Designing those new smart urinals. Not that the job itself would be all that horrible but imagine having to tell people...
What do you do for a living?
I'm a software developer.
Oh so your like hackerman?
Nah more like hackerjon.
Well what software have you developed, anything I might've seen?
Idk when's the last time you had to use the restroom at the mall?
Just the other day, why?
Well did you enjoy seeing ads while you pissed? Your welcome.
Ugh, I could so use a mechRant right now.
Y'all know those legacy code bases you guys are always bitching about that are over 15 years old and everyone that knew how they worked quit ten years ago and everyone since has just been hacking away at it just trying to make do?
So imagine that only the code is wrapped around and between a quarter inch of solid steel and covered with a two inch layer of mud, grease and oil. Was going to replace a faulty key switch, usually a simple job, but when I unplugged it I decided to test the wires to make sure it was just worn and not something major... Every motherf'ng wire had power feeding to it.
For anyone that isn't that up on electrical, the key switch generally has one wire feeding power in and it sends power out to all the other wires dependent on the key position. I say generally because I'm sure somewhere out there is probably an exception, but this goddamn forklift ain't one.
And the more shit I unbolt to see what's going on, the more and more hacks and other fuckery I find. Ffs people if you don't know what the fuck your doing the don't fucking touch it. With all the oil and diesel leaks it has, it's a miracle the whole damn thing hasn't turned into one giant fireball yet.13
oh ffs windows, I kept you around for one reason and one reason only. I don't care about what your automatically doing or are automatically gonna do and no I don't wanna buy the extended warranty or anything else you might feel the urge to offer me. If I did I'm sure I wander around that clustfuck that you call a start menu long enough I'm sure I will come across the offer.
Pro tip: If you have a dozen applications that all start with the word "windows" then it can be beneficial to group all of those applications into their own subdirectory labeled windows. Just a thought though, wouldn't want you thinking too far outa your little box there.
Also, when someone tells you they want to disable popups, that doesn't mean they want the alternative of minimizing their active fullscreen window just to see the number on the tiny little notification icon change. And god forbid I ignore you, because you'll continue to interrupt me every 30 seconds until I respond.
Oh wait, turn your notifications off? Yea, fuck that craziness, you do what you want. I swear it's like you come with some ancient 90's popup virus preinstalled.
I just wanna play my game, that's it. You know, the thing you keep wanting to display under all my other windows, screwing my pointer up, causing me to have reload it. So can you just shut the fuck up and be an xbox already? 🤬🤬🤬1
So quick question before I royally screw something up... How likely am I to need a recovery disk for a new windows system if I use the disk utility to shrink its main partition before booting up and installing ubuntu?
New as in nothing has been done to it other than setting a password and local user. I've got no idea where my external hd is at the moment and my patience is getting the better of me. I was doing good just to find my thumbdrive for the boot disk.10
Anyone saw "The Crash" yet?
Feel free to discuss the technical merits of the film, after all this is devRant, but I've only got just one question. If you've may already know, if not, spoilers be waiting 😈1
Um, when are holiday party stories not awkward?
Like seriously, it's as if murphy's law intensifies ten-fold anytime there's a tangible reference point for everyone and their mama to remember it by 🙄
So I think it just suddenly dawned on me why the south has been so slow to embrace the 21st century....18
First the web, then then the world muahahaha 🦹🏻♂️
Ok no really, probably just try to get a remote job building ui's or doing animations then who knows, maybe I'll build a robot or something 🤷🏻♂️1
