Do you actually say the words “mebibyte”, “gibibyte” etc?
Would you? Do you avoid them and use the “mega” and “giga” instead?13
It’s 2019 and back-office software for defining till receipts still results in £ turning into ú when printed.
You just have to know that you need to write ^156 instead.1
I am now a system administrator, but only for as long as it takes to integrate a new EPOS, then I go back to my crappy old job.
When writing a troubleshooting section in a training / reference doc, don’t ask users to “check the power cable is connected properly”, instead say “unplug the power cable from the device and from the wall. Check for damage. If undamaged, plug back in to device and wall”.
Don’t say “ensure wall power is switched on”, say instead “switch power off at the wall, wait 10 seconds and switch back on”.6
Was super pleased with my eBay purchase of a Dell 3008 30” monitor. Not so fucking pleased this evening when the fucker just won’t turn on.6
Imagine having do some Excel integration stuff for an ERP system that very few people use, there’s some documentation for but there are no forums, knowledge base or community at all.
If I want anything more than troubleshooting support, it’s a rate of £850/day.3
After 10 years with the same monitor, I upgraded. To another 10-year old monitor.
Behold, the Dell 3008.7
Fedora and Mint Linux as a VM hosted on unRAID. Both of them won’t let me type “&”. Instead I get “K”
Impossible to google for a solution.2
I have multiple Windows licenses for machines and VM’s but I really just want one license for Windows Workstation. I can turn off all the bullshit in Pro, but a fresh install of Workstation is just so nice and clean.1
People bitching about Microsoft wanting to acquire GitHub.
Really? You understand Microsoft are actively developing VSCode, one of the best editors on any platform? The same Microsoft responsible for integrating Linux in Windows?
Windows itself is rightfully the target of some criticism, but Microsoft in recent years are doing some amazing and positive work. Server 2016 is a quality product. Visual Studio has been awful for a long time but appears to be heading in a good direction now. Honestly, get over yourself if you can’t seem to shake the MICROSOFT IS BAD meme.90
Mom bought a Commodore Vic-20. We had a fair amount of games. I used to get up at 3 or 4am to play on it. Learned BASIC using it.
I was around 6 years old.
I’ve no idea how to set up OpenVPN on my server and phone to allow me to browse securely while I’m using open WiFi spots, and it’s really getting to me that I can’t figure it out.4
Intel CPU + Vega GPU on the same package is the best innovation in years.
We may finally have a MacBook Pro that is not only worthy of the name, but may be the first MacBook with GPU that won’t suffer a common defect failure requiring the threat of a class action before they announce an extended support period.1
Ordered a new LG TV. First thing I did was hoist “install PiHole” up to the top of my to-do list so that I can make sure the TV isn’t going to be reporting telemetry to anyone.
Glad I did. My phone and Windows VM’s now pull DNS only from the PiHole. What a great piece of software.9
My C64 Retro Game Dev book didn’t arrive today because the courier “couldn’t find your front door”.
Seriously?! 30+ orders in the past 6 months and this dumb fuck couldn’t find me?
I live at a goddamn museum, signposted all through the town.2
TV volume goes from 0-50
I like it when it’s on an even number or 25.
If it lands on an odd number, I have to change it.
What the heck? Is this just me?11
Fuck RAM pricing. Fuck limited availability of unbuffered ECC DDR3. Fuck my unRAID server with too little RAM for all my VM’s and a PSU that claims 650W yet shits the bed if I use the 2nd GPU to do anything or even max the CPU whilst 1 GPU is working hard.2
Looks like I’m going to take the analytics route to future prosperity. If I’m lucky.
I’ve followed so many directions over the past 24 months and I just haven’t focused enough on any one thing to get anywhere near skilful enough to have the courage to apply for a relevant job.
iOS development, HTML, node, Angular, CSS. I know enough of each to have an understanding, but not enough that I feel I’m competent.
So, make or break time. I have an opportunity to focus on learning Google Analytics (and data analytics in general) and potentially becoming comfortable with Google Tag Manager.
If I can’t focus on this new path and make something of it, I will be a wannabe dev until my retirement.
Intel’s glueing Vega GPU into mobile packages and none of the YouTube videos covering the topic have made a leap of logic to speculate what Apple will do with their MacBook Pro lineup next year.3
Reasons for the Nvidia GTX1070Ti existing...
1. NVIDIA targeting AMD’s Vega 56.
2. Using up failed 1080 cores.
3. Using up stockpiles/forward orders of GDDR5.
4. Mining GPU’s haven’t sold well, so the 1070 Ti targets that market instead.
What do you think?
Mine is on preorder as of today2
Robust, foolproof, UX-centric data-entry system using node. How hard can it be?
Starting this journey tonight.
Recruiter reached out. Client wanted someone with my exact job title, but with advanced Excel skills.
That’s exactly me. Excel is my secret weapon.
I tailor my CV, explain in a covering email about my Excel proficiency.
I’m not selected for interview.
Someone fucked up and it certainly wasn’t me.1
Main feature keeping me from switching to Linux from Windows...
Windows Remote Desktop is so much faster and more capable than any Linux alternative.19
I have a high tolerance for difficult or lengthy learning curves, so I’m willing to put in the work for a longer term payoff in efficiency.6
Followed a tutorial about putting together a fairly simple node app using express and the Stripe API to create a web page where you can accept a card payment.
I used it as a way to get more familiar with hosting projects on github, paying attention to keeping API keys secret.
Tried deploying to heroku, but I couldn’t get the API keys stored in config vars to be seen in the app.
Now I’m out of time and won’t be able to revisit this until Monday night.
I hate having to stop in the middle of a project2
Recruiter emails and texts about client looking for someone doing the exact same job I am already doing but with emphasis on Excel skills.
I reply and provide a tailored CV and some relevant comments in the reply email. I’m expert with Excel and I am already doing everything they are looking for.
Don’t get selected for interview.
