I've been using Linux for almost 2 years now, but as an installation from a USB stick. Today 8th Nov, 2018 I've decided to finally get rid of my windows installation from the main drive after not having booted into it forever. Programs, music and code junk by 14yo me. I will miss you.
Almost through the wipe. Past the point of return now!
For all you Data Science dudes/dudettes! Just found out about this!
And yes. Free GPU accelaration!!!1
Spending a year writing the code and designing the architecture for an insanely complex OSS project that is supposed to "save humanity".
Still only 100 commits in and 0.1 % of the way to pre-alpha.
Turns out similar project already exists, was written by PhDs with stats/math background and has significantly more access to funding and resources.
So...what do you guys think of this fight between Oracle and Google?
Am I the only one that thinks that APIs shouldn't be copyrightable? Any programmer would come to the same conclusion that API design almost always converges in similar function names, strategies and architecture. So am I nuts? Am I the only one that thinks this?1
Announced beta release date in 15 days to motivate myself to write code faster.
Major bug in a dependency I'm using and I'm now waiting for the author to fix it.
How do you guys deal with rude maintainers/owners of an open source library?
I usually fork their project and build my own version, pull patches as needed if it's a large project. Sometimes going as far as to rewrite the library (if it's small) from scratch and make a better version just so my own users will feel welcome.2
It's funny cause I started web development using pure XML on one of those easy website building sites back when Symbian was still a thing. Oh how proud I was when I did the marquee effect. Ofourse I was only 12 and by the time my dad bought a laptop in 2007 I was already teaching him how to use it.
But I suppose my real exposure to computers was when I wrote a batch file to play an explosion sound whenever someone at my local internet cafe would open up Internet Explorer instead of Firefox. I didn't even know how to program in batch.
I was pretty fucked up back then. Still am.
Intelligent triggers for real-time systems. Think, controlling drones using a portable brain scanner(EEG) and think using any language to interface with those libraries. The scientific applications are endless here.8
Worst dev sin?
Storing all my personal repositories on a luks encrypted persistent live USB and losing the latest commits of everything because the drive got corrupted.
No backups. Aww yeah 😎.
Am I the only one that keeps checking GitHub issues every 20 mins to see if the author has responded? I feel so frustrated, even if it is just for my personal project 🙁!4
(~˘▾˘)~ Lazy Mode: On
a) Rewrite 100 lines of complex code to over 300 lines to hopefully solve issue.
b) Use depreciated legacy module to solve problem instantly.
I receive those Nigerian prince scam emails all the time. I've always wanted to know more about them. So I sent them an embedded IP grabbing image link in my reply.
Turns out they really are from Nigeria. Just reported them to their ISP. Take that you pricks 😛 !!!6
Me to me: I should go to sleep.
Also me to me: Fuck it. Just one last feature.
Wakes up and looks at the time:
Start coding again
Fellow ranters, I need advice !
Discord / Gitter
Gitter has an IRC gateway. While that's cool, for some reason both Vue JS and React are on Discord.
So yesterday, this babe posted on a Facebook group saying she was looking for a tutor for her Python course in uni. I though to myself, "I'll be good lad and help someone out for the good of it". I messaged her and said I'd help when she asked me how much I was charging.
WAIT I'M GETTING PAID FOR THIS ?
"Awesome, this is gonna be the easiest job in the planet". Here I was the idiot, about to do it for free.
So we decide to Skype(The new interview feature) so I can start teaching immediately. Mind you it was 3 am in the morning. I'm a night owl and we're a time difference of FUCKING 14 hours.
So I opened up the skype interview website and sent her a link. 10 mins later I realize that I don't even fucking have webcam drivers installed on my laptop that I'd been using for over 2 years. How the Fuck does that happen?
Anyways I start searching for drivers and realize it's going to take a hell of lot more time to install the drivers. So I boot into Windows, YUCK, went on Skype and asked her what she knows so far. She says she knows the basic syntax and concepts. So I ask her to do a simple while loop and she puts the print outside the fucking loop. "Oh well, i guess it's going to be a long night".
Two hours of absolutely no progress later, she sends me a small 2 page pdf which is her homework/exercise. I politely told her I'm not there to do her homework, but I can show her how to do the concepts. After a while we ended the chat and I decided to go to sleep.
*gets up from the bed*
Wait, why did she look so worried about the homework? I opened the pdf.
I should have asked for higher pay. This is going to be impossible.
Fuck me :/6
AlphaHooks is an Integrated Library Environment used to hook between multiple libraries written in different programming languages.13
Friend: "No need to hash the passwords. It's a waste of time."
Later that day...
Me: "I always suspected you had a thing for Rose."
Friend: "What, where did you hear that ?"
Me: "I hacked into your MySQL database. Your password is 'il0verose'."
Friend: "How do I hash passwords again ?"18
Just great. Some idiot downloaded movies via torrent on the shared WiFi and the ISP cancelled the service. The landlord turned on port blocking. So now I can't access IRC or SSH without using a fucking VPN. Every fucking port... I have to use port 53 to bypass the filters. Fuck off. Fuck. Fuck this shit.9
I tell my professor If he could help me with a threading issue in my program. Tells me he hasn't done threading.
