AboutHello, I'm gudishvibes. That's all you need to know, but just in case - I live in the country Boris Johnson better not screw up. That's all, have a good {time_word}.

SkillsI do Python, HTML and CSS. Not that HTML is a programming language. Well, I did see something saying HTML + CSS is Turing Complete, but nevermind...

selfhosting good
anyways, facebook is acting as if apple's privacy ratings will harm small businesses. disgusting.1 -
hi guys, i see you're getting on well and i hope your 2020 has been at least good enough.
just came back to thank @linuxxx and @Root. i'm very sure my first action for privacy (disabling google play services, and even installing lineage!) wouldn't have happened had i not seen these people's anti-corp energy.
have a nice day, everyone!3 -
I've been playing around with my phone over SSH and it's been a fun, useful learning experience. I learnt that -
1. I need to get better at chmod, chgrp and chown.
2. My script to control the router light doesn't work on my phone, why?
2.5. Oh, I needed to turn off Tor this whole time? Oh, that also means I'd have to block every app on NetGuard except Firefox, just to run that script or configure the router - wow.
3. I can control my phone's LEDs manually? Cool.
4. Linux is fun.
:) -
Every time I add ++ to something the supporter badges onscreen change color! Are these Christmas lights?4
-
This should make it harder to deny datamining companies. (Linux Format is the magazine)
Also I saw in there that the Librem 5 is OUT WOOOOOOO
Can't buy it yet though. -
Jeez, everyone seems so advanced compared to me 😂
Anyways, I've been working more on my Discord bot recently (focusing on the economy and fun features more than moderation), but I'm also going to try and be able to have multiple Python files on the micro:bit with one hex file flashed, so I can just press reset and pick a program.4 -
Debug buddy/geeky trinkets thread, because I'm bored, I guess. Here are mine, from left to right:
> Dane-Elec (256 MB, DDR4) RAM stick that I have pretty much every time I go out. School, church, you name it. 256 MB shall always be with me.
> micro:bit (a development board aimed at schoolchildren) that acts as my debug buddy when I debug micro:bit code.
> Another micro:bit that I fried the USB chip on (I think it serves that purpose, might check the specs later) because I wanted to connect an LED to it (I know there's 25 red LEDs to use, but 26 never hurt anyone).
This one just sits in my drawer.
What do you guys have?6 -
just installed lineage, looking forward to seeing what i can do! wow, saw just now the theming engine can change boot animations out of the box, interesting touch.2

HE SAID WE'RE USING WIX!?
WIX?
HE SAID WE'RE USING WIX! OF ALL THINGS! COME ON!
i'll ask my teacher if i can make the site myself, then the school project will be fun.3 -
Science homework site, please stop this. Imagine feeling the need to use Tor browser for your homework; that seems pretty off to me!
Point made, pretty much all I should have to say on this.6 -
If I'd lost the other one instead of frying the USB controller IC thingamabob, I'd have 2 of these to try but que sera sera..
At least they were both free!3 -
JUST BECAUSE I DISABLED GOOGLE PLAY SERVICES DOES *NOT* MEAN MY PHONE CAN'T TURN ON FOR ALARMS!
i do have a workaround, but that feature was still nice10 -
Anyone know what this is? I set my smallest width setting to the highest (960dp), opened dR and saw this. When I set it back, it didn't show.2

What the frick is UDP waterproofing? User Datagram Protocol waterproofing? What's next, TCP dust protection? Blockchain rugged phones?5
-
Running Apache at home, even if nobody outside the network can access the site, is a bit more fun than using Glitch! Both are good though.5

My local library still hasn't noticed the change of name. They need to stop using a default password for the printer! Imagine how users would feel knowing private documents they scanned can be seen elsewhere? Making good passwords either needs to be incentivised, or factory passwords should be generated. Or I guess one day, people and maybe companies too will have such trash IoT security everywhere else too that you get the smart home hack from Mr Robot.
Seriously, it's dumb.8 -
Me. I'm not even in an actual job, I ditched my biggest (but small) project, then I moved onto another idea and it's fine, but I still can't be bothered to fix the larger (even though nobody cares about it) thing.
Even worse? Gudishvibes won't update to the newer version of the library, and won't make the changes needed to do so.
Tut tut, so unprofessional. -
tl;dr- laptop wouldn't shutdown, was gonna remove the battery but stroking the circuit board restarted it.
I wanted to try Chromium OS, so I live booted it and it was ok. Pretty simple at face value, and obviously very browser based, the annoying thing is I had to go for the Guest account or sign into your Google account, local users didn't seem to exist.
I tried both and it's pretty annoying having to be online for Chromium OS. I assumed it involves a browser and probably Google quite a lot, but this is just pushing it on me! The UI looks alright though.
Ok, now to what happened when I tried to shut the laptop. It just blackscreened and was still on. So I left it and my dad charged it up.
Now, I've opened this laptop before but not while it's on! I thought I was grounded by not touching the carpet, and had released the static electricity. I was planning to read the repair manual and remove the battery then reinsert it, but dumbass me touched the circuit board on purpose, thinking "I can prove to myself I'm grounded!". It restarted. Luckily I didn't mess up the whole system board o_o
yeah that's it3 -
I'm gonna start moving away from Google on my phone, that might mean flashing something like Lineage :^)
I mean, the with the Cambridge Analytica thing happened with Facebook, targeted ads, selling data, web trackers, the fact my email could be on a marketing list right now, and also the points @Linuxx made about the 'PRISM' program and privacy, I think I'm making a great decision not to trust Google too much either.
Your thoughts on the topic of where your data is and what's done with it?23 -
TfL's API sign ups didn't work, so screw them! I found Transport API and my (almost) clone of the Countdown displays seen in London is improving. The only problems I have now are showing offscreen departures (I can adopt the actual Countdown's way of doing this, or I can change the settings in the API request), and turtle making the program hang (info updates every 2 minutes).
Here's a screenshot of it - https://gyazo.com/183f9b7d5c5011909...
Also, my new coding buddy is a 256MB RAM stick! I got it out of an old PC (now thrown away, It had a QDI Platinix 2E motherboard too, a Nvidia video card, and a LAN card! Why'd you waste my stuff, mum!?).
Here's a specs page for it. I can say hi to my new buddy for you if you want! https://electrobyt.com/index.php/... -
Good news - My site is mobile friendly!
Bad news - Why is the location icon still there, I thought it was turned off.. even my mum's phone is pestering us about this location accuracy crap..13 -
Follow up on my mum's laptop - 3 screws fell out from the bottom cover on the screen's side, now it's impossible to adjust the screen without risking ripping the top cover off.
So I went to the service manual online for info, and it was actually a fun read. Read your devices' service manuals and part info.
Open them too, it's all very interesting. -
Ugh, I've applied 2/3 times for the TfL API, I want to try it...
In case you don't know, TfL manages the transport here in London and they have a 'Unified API' for live arrivals, air quality, etc. I sign up and get not a single email or notification -_-2 -
So I decided to clean the fan on my mum's laptop, because I don't want to be using some dusty trash.
And, once I successfully got some dust out it was time to put the screws back on. This one hole, I tried swapping screws too, would keep whatever screw is in it spinning. Never went in.
I had to get the unlucky screw into a small bag and store it away, and another screw which looks like the odd one out for sure went in and worked.
So, tl;dr I likely voided a warranty replacing a screw.2 -
My 7 year old sister has experienced a terrible loss that is a battle scar in coding.
She wanted to make scripts on ROBLOX, so I reccomended she go on something like Scratch.
She eventually found code.org and their Minecraft thing. She navigated bravely through the challenges. Until she left the PC for a bit. My mum came on, closed the tab and went on social media.
My sister came back and it wasn't nice. I was able to symphathise with her on, not a Pythonic level, nor a VS Code level, but a spiritual level.
She had to start from scratch. However, I'm now going to make her an account like we should have from the start.
Don't forget to save, guys.9 -
The repair shops my dad have gone to all use the excuse of 'go to the manufacturer to do that'.
Now my dad thinks you can't buy replacement parts online >>>:(3 -
Why is diversitytickets.org still up?
In my opinion, diversity != giving free tickets to people because of something they didn't choose, like being female, black, or LGBTQ+ And as @finiteAutomaton said, how would they know if you're, for example, gay?
If you *really* want to get other groups into technology, why not do it from the education level? Make sure everyone gets the same chances if they don't. Introduce role models to students, maybe.
Why not something else instead of just 'You're {black, female, LGBTQ+}, so you can apply for free conference tickets.'27
