Our product uses a modal component, pretty simple to use and reliable.
One of the clients asked to add a stupid, ridiculous and retarded plugin that screwed with all z-indexes. So we needed to change them dynamically to fix - but obviously that plugin doesn't make my life easy (it's not reactive, doesn't emit events, 0 fucks).
SOO the solution is to change it with the events emitted by the modals. We have around 27 calls to modals around the code AND GUESS WHOSE PACKAGE AUTHOR DECIDED THAT EVENTS CANNOT BE SET TO ALL MODALS like a global hook?
ARGH. AND THE BEST PART: a lot of people asked for this feature and the author replied to all of them with "I don't understand what are you asking" and just closed the requests.
Whom should I kill first, the dude, the client, or myself?
I'm seriously thinking in trying to find out how to implement that in the plugin and just do a pull request when I'll have time - right now I won't escape my fate of updating all modal calls .__.11
kinda rant kinda question:
Recently half estimated wrong the hours for a freelance - half the client was an asshole and increased the complexity of the project when gave me the final assets.
Always had issues with estimates because as I said to my boss, when I zone in coding, I lose track of time.
Does anybody have an idea how can I improve in such aspect? Plus I always feel guilty with freelancing because I am not as productive as in the main work (obviously because I'm tired).
+ probably next year if things won't get better financially speaking, I'll probably need a better paycheck, just by thinking that or I'll have to negotiate or do interviews (and survive them) + prove I'm worthy + make a point that I should get such paycheck, makes impostor syndrome kicks even harder. Why life can't be simple :(18
I have this freelance from the company that has the senior who discussed with me about IE6 (rant here: https://devrant.com/rants/2094425/...)
Back to that times, she used to always give me wrong permissions on repos and servers to piss me off. Today 'boss' sent me the link of the bitbucket for the final delivery.
Guess what permissions she gave me.1
So, asides trying to write css themes for deviantart when I was 15 (which I failed miserably because I got bored with the book I was using as a reference to study https://amazon.ca/Head-First-HTML-C... )
My first dev project was at the internship 6 yrs later where my boss put me to write html table layouts to a terrible cms that could generate blogs and simple pages based on these layouts.
I wish I could bring an amazing morale how this made me a better front-end, but, nah, after 6 yrs of coding I still fucking confuse <tr> and <td> if I don't stop to think/check.
PS: at first I wrote devrant instead of deviantart lmao3
(I'm a little bit tipsy so pls be patient)
I have a freelance to do the front end of a website like the 'old times', need to deliver html+css+scss+js+assets files.
Want use hot reloading to develop fast, but don't know what setup I should do -
some people said to go with gulp+browsersync or gulp+webpack, any recommendations?
Don't have the fondest memories about gulp but I guess now I might be able to deal with it better.6
Today my contract was supposed to be renewed and instead bosses offered me a permanent position.
Honestly, it's so silly but I felt recognized as a professional.
And the best part is they promised to give me more hard tasks, so I can keep improving as a dev.12
I'm mamma's 24/7 it remote support.
I do a little bit of everything: from recovering lost passwords (which all accounts are setup to send the link to my email), to run antivirus, update pain in the ass programs (like online banking security) and even creating occasionally maps for her on google earth pro.
Still, as a mom of two programmers, she does pretty well on her own (even uses chrome and team viewer!) to the point that one day she even dared to say to me this pearl on the phone:
"OH C'MON, DON'T YOU KNOW HOW TO USE GOOGLE?"
Yep, my mom has balls and ignorance is a bliss.4
The day that the back-end of the team complained loud and clear to boss that my code was bad because I wasn't giving support to IE5 and IE6.
At that time IE7 was already dying and the global usage was less that 5% in total (adding IE7 and IE8).
After 15 mins of heated argument between me and her (note that all this time she didn't give a fuck while I mentioned numbers to support my point), boss who wasn't even listening just asked:
Boss: will you develop faster if you don't need to worry about them?
Boss: fine, don't think we need to give support to them.5
I'm still alive, got a thicker skin (and a little bit toxic at work too) so I've been surviving, exercising a lot, studying and trying to leave social media xD
An irony is that I've rushed to watch the last season of GOT to survive spoilers and today accidentally gave a spoiler to boss. C'est la vie, right?
And this is the sleeve I did for my mechanical keyboard. And yes, it's genuine leather, and no copyrights were infringed :)2
The worst I’ve experienced was a psychopath boss who liked to throw employees against each other with lies and gossips. He loved to talk shit about everybody, used to disappear during the whole project just to appear at end anticipating the deadlines and scolding everybody.
Plus he used delay monthly paychecks in 2 weeks minimum and liked to say that this practice was good to find out who’s loyal and thick skin.
But now my bosses are quite toxic too and I feel gaslighted because I’m unsure up to which point it’s my fault.
Guess things never change much.8
3 rants in 1 because my day was shit:
1- feel veeery shitty that I lost the afternoon trying to do a specific mansory grid the way my boss told to do so, to :
a - find out the way he said won’t work
b - to listen him say that my solution is not good enough and I’ll need to solve it in another way
2- every time I think I did something good he simply undo it sooner or later
3- after one month waiting my mechanic keyboard from USA, canada post cunt will simply return to sender because the unit number is missing and they don’t have the capacity to call me like they always do when they are too lazy to buzz the door2
It breaks my heart that a lot of people thinks that front-end is a sub job inside IT. It’s contradicting that one consider itself very intelligent and superior but cannot grasp that we take care of way more stuff than “what’s the color of that button”11
I want to start writing articles/tutorials related to front-end, but where and how without being repetitive with documentation?6
I've got a coding challenge where the provided open API does not give me the data I need, I cannot change it, neither get access to the authenticated one that might give all the data.
And the person who gave me the challenge is just a HR so she did not understand when I questioned about the missing data.
I don't even know what to think about all of this.4
So, I’ve installed Manjaro awesome distro on a virtual machine and it crashed. Still I’m motivated to do a dual boot with win 10.
As a dev who didn’t use Linux for a long period - what do I need to do/install to make sure it will work nicely after doing the dual boot?
Or it’s better to gather courage and read the 130 pages official user guide?8
I feel kinda bad to rant about this but I got a book which is months old on testing, and already on the second chapter I can barely proceed because every single instruction breaks something. And the author is not really useful on the forum.
I just wanted to learn, not suffer and then learn .___.6
I have huge fear that I'll be treated as a junior forever, even though I take a lot on my plate alone.5
I just wanted to share that I've never been so close to have a consistent routine of programming studies and I'm happy because of this.
Each day I study one of those 3. Not the most efficient schedule, I agree, but at same time not killing me of boredom.
PS: look at my dev buddy :)13
How you guys manage to study at night and sleep properly?
I've been having nightmares for the whole week that I coded until few minutes before going to bed, and obviously, my nightmares were about bugs that I couldn't fix.6
get a good grasp of vuex/react/react native and do one or two complete projects with them :)
make the startup where I am grow (and hopefully get a permanent position)
start to write somewhere - medium or personal blog
start to develop and sell it stuff like mugs or t-shirts xD
help my boyfriend get a cool job as a dev8
Don’t hate me: Is there any OS with:
- Mojave’s shortcuts and gestures
- terminal like linux
- compatibility with games and graphic software like windows?
I don’t like MacBook’s price neither it’s hardware, but I don’t want to have to use something like Gimp on Linux neither have to build drivers lol and windows is slowly killing my laptop’s performance9
A few days ago I sent an email to a restaurant telling them that they were overcooking the meals and got credits as an apology. Today I decided to use them, but for this I needed to order using the app.
When I chose to pay with the virtual coins, the taxes value become NaN and you ‘pay’ just the order price.
Before I thought it was a bug, but thinking better, I feel partially inclined to say it’s a feature lol.3
Guy whom I know that wants to be a famous and relevant front-end dev in my home country wrote an article saying that he uses stack overflow to measure the reliability and potential growth of a new technology before learning it.
I’m a junior but I felt pity and shame for him.6
I forget to reply people comments and messages;_; even recruiters. And when I remember it feels too awkward to reply them after so long3
