I'm currently rewriting the heart, foundation, core module of my company, that's written with my own shitty legacy code that is old, is dirty, but somehow worked flawlessy during whole 4 years. I'm afraid.4

::Update about Hugh Jackman's meet & greet::
As some of you read this week, I'm a CEO on a Comic Book portal and I've made an app for the Logan movie campaign. Inside of the package, today we would have an opportunity to interview him.
It happened. We watched the movie (which is fucking awesome), I went into the press conference but Fox messed up big time in the end. At the time of the personal interview with him, after 3 hours of waiting, just one person of the company could go talk with him.
I'm a huge fan of Hugh and he was supposed to be my very first contact with someone this famous.
But I was with one of my best employees. I couldn't live with myself giving such a huge disappointment for him if I went there on his place. So I sent him instead and waited outside.
I won't tell you guys that I'm not sad. I am. It is a one time experience for life. But seeing the bright on his eyes leaving his first interview, so glad for me letting him go and so happy for doing something this big, is priceless.
Simon Sinek was right: Leaders eat last.
There will be plenty of other opportunities in the future. Now, I have a contributor that will work with blood, sweat and tears together with us to build something even stronger and open up new possibilities 😉
Thanks for all the hype on the other post guys! 😆8 -
I am a developer for almost 12 years (I am 24 now, I started early), but all my life I've been a lone wolf. I didn't share code, I didn't had to do peer reviews. The only opportunity that I had to do this in a company, it was completely messed up experience and I ended up being the only developer over there, so there was no one to see or review what I was doing.
So I basically grew up my entire life working by myself with no supervision.
It made me a very possessive person about my code and besides knowing that I am a highly above average developer, I can't show it to others because I think they might not really like what they'll see.
The thing is, this is a very stupid conclusion. If they have something to tell me, it means that there's something to learn, to evolve. After months of struggle, last year I've finally open sourced a project -- which in the time was my greatest thing of all time, so imagine how hard was that for me.
The reception was pretty good and even one of Meteor's maintainers gave me a star. Since then, I've been slowly opening the source of some legacy projects that would usually go straight to the trash bin.
So that's the moral of the story people: Don't be shy of your work, make code reviews, learn with other people about your weaknesses -- you'll never know them by yourself.4 -
Whoa guys, I am the CEO and only developer of my company, I just agreed to create a little app for an ad campaign and deliver it tomorrow.
But then I'll meet HUGH FUCKING JACKMAN!!!!!!!!!!
Holy shit I am so excited13 -
Don't you just love macOS when you click on 'Get Info' expecting to get information about all the selected files combined and this shit happens?23

Holy s**t, I was doing MySQL dumps wrong my whole life. An import from a backup service was taking 9 hours to finish. I was so pissed off that discovered mydumper & myloader. Results? Now it finished in 49 seconds. Yay!! 😆1

Programming is actually easy. The art of solving problems with creative and scalable solutions combined with a meeting-addicted dickhead fucking up everything while giving you insane dealines is what makes us unique.

The moment when you reopen a project from 4 months ago and you can't believe that you wrote that code1

"I will do great commits that make sense! I will always track all my atomic chang.... Oh, fuck it, there it goes again".3

Whoa, I was about a two months away from devRant and when I came back people are trying to make PHP as the new Nickelback for programming? That's just unfair, with both of them. I love Nickelback. I love PHP. PHP was my very first language that I started to study around 11 years ago, when I was just 12. PHP made me get my first job and introduced me to a world where I decided to create my own company, a comic book network. PHP led me to my current path, which I deeply love what I do and I fortunately employ 12 people, which are not even coders! See? One language indirectly affected the life of 12 families. Yes, I discovered new languages that I currently have more fun using like nodejs, but that doesn't mean that PHP sucks. Free and unfounded hate sucks.2

After a huge hit of a long term burnout explosion that affected my life and self confidence in many ways, I've decided to focus on video and photography and leave my restless programmer side to rest a little bit. It's been around 25 days without touching on a single line of code. Never stopped this much in my life. It's weird.2

This is it guys, my relationship got corrupted today. The damage is irreversible and there's no backups... I thought she was the one.4

@dfox please make the opened Rant content box shorter or the preview on the feeds wider. When I tap to read more, the content disposition is totally changed because of the different widths and I lose the reading point :(

I know a guy who uses Unicode characters to write variable and function names. I won't be surprised if I find some Emoji function declaration there3
-
Just got in a discussion at a Facebook thread when the guy laughed at me because my application server stack uses 20 servers for redundancy and also because I like to make each service (mysql, redis, php) on its own box. He says that he'll teach me how to be awesome because a much larger app that he maintains uses only one server.3

10 years as a developer and I still struggle to set up that fucking maven thing because those crazy college professors all use Java for lessons like "read a file and create an array with its contents". A shitload of boilerplate that I could've done with 3 or 4 lines of js, python or whatever else. Decided to skip all of them and focus on the tests to compensate the missing grades.1

I just love Pokémon since my childhood, but mate, Pokémon Go has a totally different build quality than the regular series. What a crap app they've launched. A shitload of bugs that prevent me from even keeping it open for more than 1 minute. Nothing works. You can do better, Nintendo. Niantic is using your name. It is not a lack of team or money.2

The moment when you finally figure out what was going wrong with the code. Just had one right now!5
-
Got extremely stuck and I have absolutely no clue about what I am really doing. I think I've messed up the whole codebase with these new changes.5
-
@dfox how about markdown support for rants and comments? It'd be great to express some stuff better!6

Those Rockstar lazyfucks developers! I just spend all Franklin's money on stock market and my portfolio got empty! Lost $200k of game money that took days to get and searching on the web I found that this shitty glitch happens since 2014 and thousands are affected! Go fuck yourselves trying to make me buy game money with real money by making me lose everything you fucking useless devs

Just found an issue on my application and while I was searching for the error location it magically fixed itself. HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO DEBUG IT NOW?

@dfox have you ever thought about making +1's like a coin for swag store, (maybe with a high conversion rate) so people get even more encouraged to make great content inside devRant?6
