My employer bought some new 40" 4k displays to the office. The want us to evaluate if they are any good, and if so replace all monitors... No real developers has one, only HR people sitting there with one huge window with office or word open!! It makes me cry! And they will most likely say they are too big!

My boyfriend.
He's an amazing software developer, has a few more years of experience with me, and because he's not a colleague, I feel comfortable asking him dumb questions. Combined with his patience and willingness to explain things very thoroughly, it's helped my post college learning immensely.
I love that I can cook him dinner, and then go to him with a code smell that I found at work, and spend the meal discussing ways to make cleaner code. I'm not sure who the real winner is in that situation. Probably my employer, haha.23 -
I'm almost 29 and only have finished high school. I never new what I wanted to do until 7 years ago. Software engineering and development.
It took me a little while an some effort to find a employer who sees my potentials and is willing to invest in me.
Two weeks ago I decided to finally go back to school again (self study). Last week my boss told me he is proud and willing to share the costs.

I'm the only programmer for my employer. Today I finished a GUI and engine to let our managers easily post annoucments to our TVs.
Nothing crazy; PHP login screen, some forms, small database, and the app to run on the TVs.
When I told my manager it was up and running she asks "Since you can build that, can you start working on a tool to run voice analytics off of our agents phone calls?".
Sure.. I'll get right on that.. Follow up with me in 4 years.8 -
My last employer lost 6 devs and 2 designers within a month because they thought money could buy them the right to treat employees like shit.

Got laid off my by old employer back in 2019 because they have their priorities completely wrong.
Got a mail today whether I could fix something for them (ofc, they wanted me to do it essentially for free).
One of the websites I built for a customer back when I still worked there had a massive bug (that I was aware off and patched in later versions of the library causing it).
They never updated it so, I told them "just update the library".
Apparently, the idiot that was in charge of maintaining said site after I left didn't know how to and completely broke everything.
The hilarious part: While I setup everything using stuff like Docker and Git to make rollbacks easy...
That idiot went back to FTP and manually upgrading the databases through PhpMyAdmin :^)
He nuked the entire site.
Database? Gone.
Codebase? Borked (installed a version with a lot of breaking changes without properly reading the migration guide).
And knowing that shit company, they don't have any backups either.
They said "I wasn't needed because we have other good devs" when they laid me off.
Uhu, I can eh... see those good devs doing their job :^)51 -
My employer keeps sending booze to our houses.
Officially meant for coronaproof zoom social meetings where they play stupid bingo games and quizzes on Friday afternoons.
Why they're sending 2 liter bottles of Rum, 3 bottles of rosé wine and 12 cans of craft beer for the 6th week in a row... I really don't know... I don't even attend the zoom meetings.
All I know is that during breakfast, rum is better mixed into coffee than through cornflakes.
Anyway... Why was this a rant again? Oh right. Can I sue my employer for baiting me into an addiction? 🤔42 -
My previous employer still (contractually) owes me $5k. I still have push access to the repo and prod servers. Should I add a reminder to the admin dashboard? (After yet another email reminder, ofc.)
I could also mail him an invoice, since I have his addresses. Then again, it has been about a year since I was supposed to receive it, so maybe I'll just file a lawsuit. 🙄

Wow this one deserves a rant. Where should I even begin? I got a new job for over half a year now doing work in an agency. We're building websites and online shops with Typo3 and Shopware (not my dream, but hey). All fine you might think BUT...
1) I have been working on the BIGGEST project we have all by myself since I started working at this company. No help, nobody cares.
2) If something goes wrong all the shit falls back to me like "wHy DiDnT yoU WoRk MoRE?". Seriously? How should one dev cover a project that's meant for at least two or three.
3) The project was planned four years ago (YES that's a big fat FOUR) and sat there for 3,5 years - nobody gave a fuck. I got into the company and immediately got the sucky shit project to work on.
4) I was promised some time to get familiar with the projects and tech we use and "pick something I like most to get started". Well that never happened.
5) I was also promised not to talk directly to our customers. Well, each week I was bombarded with insults, a shitload of work and nonsense by our customers because (you guessed it) I was obligated to attend meetings.
6) The scheduled time for a meeting was 30 minutes, sometimes they just went on for over two hours. Fml.
7) Project management. It does not exist. The company is just out to get more and more clients, hires more god damn managers and shit and completely neglects that we might need more devs to get all this crap finished. Nope, they don't care. By the way: this is not like a 200 employee company, it's more like 15 which makes it even sadder to have 4 managers and 3 devs.
8) We don't use trello (or anything to keep track of our "progress"), nobody knows the exact scope of the project, because it was planned FOUR FUCKING YEARS AGO.
9) They planned to use 3 months on this project to get it finished (by the way it's not just an online shop, it has a really sophisticated product configurator with like 20 dependencies). Well, we're double over that time period and it is still not finished.
10) FUCK YOU SHOPWARE
11) The clients are super unsatisfied with our service (who would have guessed). They never received official documents from us (that's why nobody knows the scope), nor did they receive the actual screen design of the shop so we just have to make it up on the go. Of course I mean "I" by "we", because appearently it is my job to develop, design and manage this shit show.
12) My boss regularly throws me in front of the bus by randomly joining meetings with my client telling them the complete opposite of things that we discussed internally (he doesn't know anything about this stupid project)
13) FUCK YOU COLLEAGUES, FUCK YOU COMPANY, FUCK YOU SHOPWARE AND FUCK YOU STUPID CUSTOMERS.
14) Oh btw. the salary sucks ass, it's barely a couple of bucks above minimum wage. Don't ask me why I accepted the offer. I guess it was better than nothing in the meantime.
Boy that feels good. I needed that rant. But hey don't get me wrong. I get that dev jobs can be hard and sucky, but this is beyond stupidity that I can bear. I therefore applied for a dev job in research at a university in my dream country. Nice colleagues, interesting projects, good project management. They accepted me, gave me a good offer and I can happily say that in 6-7 weeks my current company can go fuck themselves (nobody knows the 10.000+ lines of code but me). Just light it up and watch it burn!20 -

1. If your contract allows it (and it should), get more involved in public dev community. Your employer benefits greatly from making a small closed source core product, with a giant open source ecosystem around it. Write public articles. Working in a community larger than one single business is fun.
2. Start a company coding club, a "labs" division, work in a slightly more exotic language. Great if your employer gives you time, but using some of your own is worth it too. Work on non critical tools, creative experiments. Sometimes you stumble onto incredibly valuable ideas which would never have popped up if you had strictly followed stakeholder requirements.
3. Listen to your body. If you feel restless, go for a run. If you feel tired, take a nap. If you're stuck, wander around the company. If you feel down, go find a place with more than a dozen trees. And always have a notepad nearby for doodling!5 -
What is the most ridiculous over-the-top "startup" thing you've been the victim of as a developer?
Alternatively, what kind of weird startup luxury would you absolutely love to have at your company?
For me, at various companies I've worked at/visited:
1. Hammocks & fatboy beanbags. Current employer has a "Netflix & Chill" corner with nice couches, and a small gym. I have encountered isolation/flotation tanks at the office of one of our partners... which is cool, but over the top in my opinion.
2. A fully automated aquaponics garden in the lunchroom. Was awesome, until some fish died and started to rot.
3. One hoverboard per employee, at previous employer. I splashed hot chocolate milk in an arc over three desks. A coworker broke his ankle while watching me spill chocolate milk.
4. Daily scrum standup meetings, on socks, in a big bouncy castle. Not kidding. Fucking ridiculous... (but secretly fun). That employer also had spiral slides between all floors, a tiny half-pipe with tiny skateboards, and someone who rode a unicycle way too much. It was a fucking circus. Stuck in the office of a Fintech company.
5. Soldering bench (at my current company), with drawers full of breadboards, servos and electronics components. Completely unrelated to my work, but it was my idea. It's just great to build a simple kits together with another random coworker while brainstorming platform features & refining specs... much better than meetings with bullshit slides.
6. Unlimited energy drink. Developed a serious caffeine habit (15-20 cans a day), and almost got a stomach ulcer. Not beneficial to employee health.
7. I really do love working from home + unlimited holidays. Just being able to honestly say "fuck you guys, I'm gonna get drunk and play games today", and at other times working until 4am and sleeping in the next day, or taking a week to work in a park in Rome... It makes work truly feel like my favorite hobby. Combined with a good sprints and curious/ambitious people, you can easily track productivity anyway.19 -
I'm working on my own code editor with 'multiplayer', option to draw stuff, option to design algorithm schemes, option to browse SQLite databases and most importantly - I've based entire interface on HTML/CSS/JS and entire backend on C# and PHP, so it works both online (via browser) and offline (via program).
Tell me whatchu think, it's still work in progress.

Dreaded this moment for 1.5 years now, and now decided to come clean.
Did I know that an irrational fear about being fired over some memes was indeed irrational? Yes. Do I feel better now? Yes, hell yes!
To be completely honest with you, it was today's @scor interactions that finally empowered me to do it. A dumb fear of getting doxxed was with me way before @scor started attacking me, but now I ended it: my partners (I'm polyamorous) know about devRant, my friends, my ex-colleagues, and now my current employer knows it too. Everyone from my public life knows who I really am and what I really think.
Not as a step in a dumb “beef” that doesn't exist, not as a slide, not as an insult, I'm going to say THANK YOU, @scor, for finally pushing me over that tiny obstacle. One and a half year of annoying obscure itching is finally over.28 -
Well dear former employer thank you for everything. Thanks for taking me on as a junior and not providing any training at all. Thanks for changing my job role without consulting me whilst I was on holiday and again failing to train me for a job I had no idea about, but you apparently needed me to do for you. And finally thank you for letting me work nearly a full shift before telling me how much you like me, don't have a bad word to say about me, and you're really happy with all my work but the company and I "aren't a very good fit for each other anymore".4

This applies to all employees, including our many remote employees (I wonder how they plan to enforce that). I’m trading in my nice quiet wireless keyboard for some Cherry MX blues to protest. Encouraged a friend to quit his current job. He is mentally unstable now because of his employer. His jerk employer harasses him and blames him stuff he didn't do. Blames him pre-existing bugs/bad features/bad codes from three years ago! He just got employed by that jerk employer two months ago. I know how my friend works because he was once my team leader for 19 months. He works harder and is one of the best devs I've ever met. He doesn't deserve a dickhead employer and that dickhead employer DOES NOT deserve a talented(skillful) software engineer like my friend. My employer thinks their Wordpress site is great because it's so easy to find a Wordpress "developer". That's like commissioning artwork patched together from colouring books because it's easy to find someone who can use crayons.

At my previous employer my boss asked me how long a project would take. Told him about a week maybe two. He then informed me it was due that day. Apparently the client gave it to him months ago. I worked a 35 hour weekend to make it happen. Then he complained that my weekly time sheet was higher than normal. He didn't think it was accurate and underpaid me. So glad I got out of agency work.6

I was working on a team with people with various employment statuses. Contractors, employees of the client, and me as a regular full time employee of the company that “owned” the contract. My HR manager gave us a presentation about our reporting structure. I had at least seven managers for different reasons across various projects.
I got a new position so needed to resign but I had no idea which managers were the ones I should notify. I looked at the org chart that the HR lady showed. I sent my resignation to five managers that would be affected by my leaving. Unknown to me my project manager was actually a contracting manager hired by the client. He let his employer, the client, know that the lead dev quit.
Apparently it destabilized the contract for my employer. If I hadn’t just issued resignation they would have fired me for telling a customer about a significant internal staffing change. They didn’t fire me because the optics would have been worse for them.2 -

I assume this only happen in my country (Malaysia). We have multiple inconsistent lockdown...
So most of us went from working in the office to Working From Home. During this time Our employers expects us to clock in to Zoom Meetings or Dingtalk meetings for 24 /7 , microphone must be turned on and camera must be turned on at all time, other wise it consider as a void(that means salary deduction, not consider working) .
Employers here have the mentality of ""IF I DON'T SEE WHAT ARE DOING WITH MY OWN EYE , I CONSIDER YOU ARE NOT EVEN WORKING.".

I am back with some more emotional shit.
So tomorrow is my last working day at my second employer where essentially I'll just walk into the 10 seater serviced office to drop my laptop in a cupboard because no one else is here.
So today, an hour ago, they had a virtual farewell for me and everyone spoke of me highly with specific examples.
Well that's not what this post is about, but the emphasis is that I am still in dual mind of whether I made the right decision to quit my second employer so soon (in just 10 months)?
If I had stayed for two months more:
1. I'd gotten a hike this week
2. More RSUs in that hike along with cash
3. Joining RSUs would have vested for the cliff period of 1 year
4. Tenure would be at least a year
5. Would have found a better job with higher pay (on the new hiked salary).
I surprisingly got the grip of the product and that's when I decided to quit.
The reason I quit is I wanted to optimise for WLB and timezone with better team culture.
While the next job is surely a company I wanted for a long time and that too in B2C space, I really lost my affection for that role and that's where it came to me upfront and I rejected them initially before picking up the offer again.
My second employer is a very global and one of the largest brands. Really wanted to stick around and never got to enjoy the benefits which others did.
Only time can tell, because when I chased something I never got it, when I stopped, it came to me.
And what I am chasing now is something I am unable to achieve.
Why is life so fucked. Seems like I am about to lose one of my biggest and only life and career dream.
Maybe I fucked up this decision. Maybe not. Only time can tell.12 -
So I got an email from my employer/prof saying that there's a really important software that needs to be installed on a specific server, and it (the email) had all these additional "highly technical" stuff. So I open the link to this software.

I dont work weekends ever. And I dont bring my work home with me, once I finish for the day, Im finished. Even if there is a deadline looming or something is due for a weekend release. I will only work when Im in the office. And I wont work extra unpaid hours. All that does is create unrealistic expectations from your employer and clients. I did it once and learned that there was no point and I could have just gone home and it would have been fine. Im never doing it again.3

I started doing a little HTML coding for a training site I wanted to build for my employer. Every time I thought "there must be a way to do this..." There was! It was so rewarding to build something by myself that I kept going into CSS and JavaScript, then PHP, and now Python. A few months ago I could just about code a hyperlink and make some bold text, so I'm quite proud of how far I've come :)1

#forexposure, for experience, flexible hours (especially when coupled with work from home, it makes your workplace too accessible and management can guilt trip you into working at ungodly hours way too easily), and such I'd really avoid.. not that I have much experience with these things though. Oh and also, startups. They're small so very intimate in a way but too unstable.
Honestly though, I have difficulty in working for any employer, especially when that employer isn't a very technical one. Maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to go self-employed... 🤔

One of my ex-trainees, mid-level dev at the time of the story, from the previous job asked me and insisted to work with me and if it's possible to open a position for him at my new employer (i was a team lead). We were also somehow friends, spending a lot of time together - including our girlfriends - outside of work.
He went to the interview, passed it and he received an approx. 1500 euros salary, jumping from around 1k euros. He was very happy with it and accepted the offer.
One week before starting his new job, my manager came to me and asked: "hey what happened with X?". I was like: "what happened?". "Don't you know? He sent an SMS this morning to announce us that he doesn't want the job anymore."
I had absolutely no idea about that. The second thing that I did was to give him a call and ask him about his decision. His argue was that "my current employer made my another offer: 1550 euros". I said something like "ok, have fun".
I got back to the manager to tell him about that. He offered to make another offer of almost 2000 euros to the guy, but I refused.3 -

I already had a previous succesful interview the day before and just went to my current employer out of decency.
The previous day gave me so much confidence, that I dominated the complete interview and asked them what they could offer me, that I would choose them.
On my way home they send me a text how much they were interested in me and that they will show me code as I demanded.

So I'm tasked with rewriting the old software my employer uses to track basically anything in his company. They want to stick quite close to the old workflow as much as possible, I get that.

Me: The API team is pushing code overtop of live endpoints that can break them?
Employer: Yes, we need the updates to work with a new product we are developing.

Employer: We looked at that but it cost extra and required us to use the cloud solution so we don’t use versioning.

Me: No, so when do I need to regression test all 7 production apps?
Employer: The API’s are moving to production at 4am and we need it signed off by 7am.
Me: I only have 3 hours to regression test 7 production apps at 4am? Each app, if I just skim over them, would take me 2 hours each. I will do my best but that’s a very short time to ensure complete functionality.

My employer uses latest and greatest macbooks. It's fuking awesome. I wasn't a fan until I found the ease of android and iOS development on it. I even started using Atom for web development. And I bought a Mac mini for a dedicated jenkins server. I don't think I'll ever go back to windows. There's just no point. I know it's expensive but it gets the job done. No more fukin mac VMs on VMware. Fuk that shit.20

I find every employer is looking for someone with just enough ambition to “move up” in their company but any ambition of your own outside that seems to come off as threatening.
I try to keep the 2 separate but I have always thought that by not wanting people with actual ambition a company is only hurting themselves.

I was hired as a junior game developer and I had a senior who was working alongside me on a client’s project.
Within one month they moved my senior to another project and made me the project manager of the project that I was working on.
Worst fucking experience ever. Client’s were unresponsive for a week sometimes and pretty strict when it came to deadlines. Needless to say my employer lost the client and I was made the junior developer again.3 -
My employer forced me to do video courses and pass quizzes/tests. Questions were vague, not directly related to the video and it took me over a week to get past them.
I think i should mention, there was a month for this, but I missed the email and learned about this courses by being warned that deadline is near.
On the second day I made a userscript that stores given answers and mark the correct ones in the next attempts, so that brute-forcing would require less copy/paste.
Topics covered by the courses are a nice subject for another rant. -
When used properly No-SQL databases are an incredible resource but my employer keeps hammering them in problems which could better be solved by traditional SQL databases in an attempt to be more "hip" and "cool".
This causes huge PITA in making the database work properly with the ORM we're using and waste of time since we're force to emulate basic features which are already exists in almost any SQL database (i.e. relational integrity) using No-SQL storage.1 -

It is sending it back to a data center and doing evaluations on the code. This is like handing your code to an unknown entity with no guarantees for privacy or copyright protection.
This concept bothers me and I would have to consult with my employer to even determine if we wanted to take that risk. I think it is just a matter of time before a bad actor takes advantage of this and rips off a company somewhere.8 -
Applied for a new job today! It's in a different city, but it's with a company I'm familiar with, doing tech I'm familiar with. They provided my current employer with managed hosting and occasional bugfix and upgrade support before we completely changed our tech stack last year.

I got such a bad employer… oh, pardon me: committent-but-actually-employer-minus-the-responsabilities that I developed bruxism, rage bursts and chest pains due to anxiety.
Bright side 1: i quitted by saying them in their face “you don’t even fucking know what docker is and you claim to be an expert, get a fucking update”
Bright side 2: They failed a while… Oh wow much surprise, very unexpected considering that they fired the only dev with experience on the product and that they re-made the interface every other day making everyone’s job a miserable joke. Smart move, 10/10 would invest in them.
The “bright side” in this is mostly that I’m forced to accept I was a very valuable asset and shut up any imposter syndrome related to that bs work.

With my previous employer, it was the whole "we're doing Agile and sprints and all the things" with "finish the project in six weeks plus here are some more requirements" garbage. Plus my tech lead always let the business roll over her and add unplanned requirements during a sprint without adjusting the deadlines set by the project managers. In summary: a fuck-all combination of Waterfall deadlines, Kanban tickets and Scrum timeboxes.
At my current employer, it's our business partners who're a bunch of douchebags that don't plan for anything except making sure their bonuses stay intact. Recently they terminated support for a third-party product that literally drives 99% of their web application then says to us "Hey, we need to build our own replacement for the vendor product using an entirely new stack. You have 3 months or our clients will get pissed." Oh, and these business partners keep raising new issues without any documentary basis except "this doesn't feel right" when they test our in-progress work. So helpful <sarcasm />
On the bright side, I'm getting paid whether or not this project fails, so... meh. -

In my previous job, they made me feel like they were lucky to have me. In my current job they try make me feel like I’m lucky to work for them.
I certainly preferred the precious position where I felt valued for what I brought to the company.
If I have any advice to give, it’s the following: if your current employer appreciates your work and treats you well, you should stay there a long as possible.

When you need to learn something due to the pressure, you'll learn faster. It's the same as learning a new language - I'd rather go to live in a country where it's mainly spoken that language and learn it due to the necessity than buy courses online. -

I had literally JUST learned to code, after completing an online course. I had played around making some tiny C# programs was looking for my first Junior job. A recruiter got in touch and to him I sounded like I knew what I was talking about. So he contacted the employer, called me back me later on and said that the employer wanted to see some sample code of mine.
"Sure!" I said eagerly and pasted my programs into an email. My two programs were probably about 20 lines of code in total - both Console apps. One was a stopwatch which I "hadn't quite got working yet", the other a Quadratic Equation solver.
The response came back that I was "too Junior for the position".
I know we all have to start somewhere, but I painfully cringe when I think about this employer and probably alll the devs there crowding around his monitor, pissing themselves at my tiny programs.3 -

What a coincidence, my new employer is exactly his old employer. Although I liked the company with my impression from the interview, knowing this fact made me nervous. What if this is the place that bred him into what he is today?...
Turned out the reality is not cruel. I'm joining a team that is formed way after he left. And this new team is expected to bring changes to the old-fashioned existing product (or simply a revamp/remake if you call it).
And it's interesting for me to now come to understand the poor decisions he has made. I said I "understand". This does not mean I agree with him now. His approach makes sense when I look at the old-fashion product I am working on. But it still feels wrong in many ways for the product he is now in charge of.
There, I witness that someone with experience is not necessarily smart.

I get amazed almost every work day by how buggy the File Explorer is in Windows 11.
Actually, it's the whole Microsoft experience, that never worked for me. Most products are not at all intuitive (e.g. Google Sheet UX > Microsoft Excel UX), some other products shouldn't even be released (e.g. I've tried Loop, which is supposed to be a Notion clone, but it's more like a cheap demo).
I really need to start insisting about Linux, so my employer allows me an installation (or at least they could provide a Mac, if Linux doesn't cut it)4 -

The HR for my last employer sucks.
After I left, my employer changed record keepers for the 401k before I could rollover the funds to an IRA. I thought, “It will be fine. I’ll wait until they finish setting up the new record keeper. Then, I can do the rollover.”
When the blackout period was about to end, I didn’t receive any instructions about the new record keeper. The funds had been transferred already and I called the old record keeper to confirm it was done by my former employer. I think, “Maybe they forgot to contact me because I’m no longer an employee.”
I email HR and ask when I can expect instructions on how to access the new record keeper. Idiots send me instructions for the old record keeper and how to file for a distribution. HR had actually called the old record keeper for these instructions when the funds were no longer with the old record keeper. WTF 😤
It takes all of my strength to write a civil email. I remind them that funds were transferred nearly 2 weeks ago by them to a new record keeper. I repeat that I need instructions on how to access the new record keeper and I don’t need instructions on how to file for a distribution from the old record keeper.
I’m effing glad I don’t work there anymore. I can’t deal with that HR’s idiocy anymore.1 -
Recently I've been considering switching to another job. I've been at my current employer my entire working carreer, and a switch might be a healthy choice soon. My current working environment is changing (and not for the best in my opnion), and I have never really looked over the fence. I've also felt that my current job lacks some real meaning.
I currently work on software for logistical purposes, but I don’t feel that my work aligns with my values, or that it tries to solve issues that are important to me.
I have received many job offers with higher pay and benefits, but again, none that really work on issues that I find important.
My question to you is wether (and if so: how much) you let your values and ethics weigh in your choice of an employer/project. And are you willing to offer up (financial) benefits for a job that aligns better with your values?4 -

Well after working a normal office job for a while I'm kinda starting to think I thrive on isolation.
All of the people, the noise, the distractions, the lights, it's all so overwhelming. I have constant anxiety attacks.
Idk does anyone relate with this? We're they ever able to overcome? Cope? Bend their employer to the will of their isolationism by working at home more often and still producing results despite the Beck and call to "please stay in the office and fit in our prescribed work time box, you robot."3 -

What was the period you informed your employer/project manager in advance about your resignation and leaving? 2 weeks, a month? more? And was it enough time for the manager to find replacement? Did you leave in good terms?3 -

Pro tip: don’t accept a meeting with a potential employer for the beginning of your holidays (I know, ’muricans, you don’t get this concept where basically everyone taked paid vacation for several weeks during summer) so that you’ll end up thinking about whether to jump ship or not for most of your holidays, effectively ruining your time to potentially relax for you.

I've had a lot of jobs, and they've all employed some form of single sign-on. But all of them have required enough individual logins for various services that I had to maintain a full category for that employer in my keepass. Until now.
This company has, by far, the most comprehensive SSO I have ever seen. Perhaps it should not be surprising that it works so well, as it is 100% made in-house. But for a company of this size, that's an amazing achievement. It speaks to excellent planning, it seems to me.

We are supposed to get bonuses by this time of the year, but at the evaluations meetings we were told that this year we won't because we've lost a client and bla bla.
Later this week, one of my colleagues just opened himself and told me that he and one more received the full bonus!!

My employer should burn his DevOps system to the ground: esoteric configuration split on 1000 files, bugs and downtime almost daily, not communicated breaking changes which breaks pipelines, shitty documentation, few opportunities for customization and for everything you have to open a fucking ticket, I love programming but since I have to spend more time on a fucking ticketing system rather than on Vim my motivation is gradually falling to pieces.5

Although iv only been developing in android for around 7 months yet I fail to see the appeal of Kotlin.
It has no real advantage over Java. In my opinion its fucking lazy code. It might look pretty but that's about it. So I don't see why employers are opening their arseholes for people with Kotlin experience.
Im pretty sure they are doing it because its "the next big thing". If you can write solid Java I dont know what the big deal is.. Maybe someone can shed some light on this..
Android studio can convert Java to Kotlin with one click. So No Mr employer I do not see your reason why you employed someone over me because he has Kotlin experience. Its fucked!! It's always irked me that people can't RTFM simple things. But I've often just hacked my way through code, brute-forcing equations here and there until they work by trial and error. Nothing for an employer or anything, but nonetheless, I was not RTFMing. I was doing all the D and as little of the R as possible in R&D, just to save time. I'm trying to change that about myself. It's easier to implement systems when you properly understand them. No more hackery.

Sooo I've just learned that one of the new guys I'm helping train (And is a level below my role in seniority) is being paid approx. 12.9% higher than what I'm being paid; I got promoted a few months back (Been with the 'biz for over 4 years) and he was hired around the same time (A few months back). I learned this as we've both become good friends, and were on the topic personally and informally. Our salaries are not publically known outside of personal disclosure. Honestly at this point my closest guess was "Joe, who must have fucked up big time" because Joe is the company's SysAdmin and has a lot of fucked up records (One time Joe tried to convert all system OSes to Linux even with our hydra servers with pre-installed windows running smoothly, his action caused a noticeable server down-time all for the reason of Joe being a Linux freak). He and only he has the power to transfer/switch/off/on servers at will. I really don't know what Joe must have done but sure thing is there is a fuck up somewhere.
Talking about me, I was only a developer enthroned only within his desk and secondly I no longer worked there. Who fucking calls a retired soldier about a lost battle after six freaking months later! Just fucking sink with your ship captain!
But how can I explain all of this to G.M without implicating Joe and also not look like snitch, I thought to myself.
While I was pondering within myself and the call which has long been disconnected, CC broke the silence.

The woman that just called is the G.M. of the firm I had formerly worked with and she's also the wife to the M.D of the same firm which was my former direct Boss whom I respect a lot. Having a disjunct with the wife can also affect the relationship with the husband, which I don't want to lose. So we cool!

I always make sure i can code on Vacation on my own projects. The flipside of this is tho: i never take time off, since my work is rather relaxed anyways.
My employer messages me about that recently, that i still have 100% of my vacation days left, so what i did is using it all up until the year is over. Essentially im almost all the time on vacation until the end of the year (+ a little), and can work on my own projects. One rust project might be in a publishable state soon actually. -

I know people are upset over this whole "they're raising the minimum wage to $15/hr" thing but consider the following:
if your employer doesn't raise your wage/salary to higher than that in response, they were only paying you the minimum possible amount to be attractive for your position, and would've only been paying you minimum wage if they could've. They really don't value you as a worker.
note: apparently some businesses have to be approached by you for a "raise" before they can do this in some positions even if they want to raise someone's wage/salary, or so i've heard?9 -

I got a really really fast computer from my previous employer with a valid windows 10 license (Enterprise) as a farewell gift when I left them in December 2016.

My previous employer went bust.
As soon as it was announced, I got flooded by e-mails, messages and calls with job proposals. I went through a lot of interviews, half of which were interrupted by the potential employer, and half by me.
In the end, after a good recommendation and a short 1h interview, I got hired by my current employer, in a rush that made me quit the old company before my contract ran out due to it being bust.
Now if someone I worked with recognize this story, I say to you: Hiya! And probably congrats to reaching the same island as me :) all devs from all departments were absorbed into this company. -

I am working on startup since 4 months as mid level ML engineer and my employer called me to say that they might fire me because my performance is not okay. He was true that my performance is far from good because I am busy preparing documents for my MSc. I am thinking about quitting but at the same time, pandemic is hitting hard and lots of jobs are lost and I might be unemployed after this.6 -
I started a new job a few days ago. I'm already adapting to the team's workflow and codebase. A new offer came up, same salary, but the company is near my place and have many green field projects. It wouldn't be any legal repercussions if I quit, but I would feel guilty for resigning just a few days after starting, the employer would have to start the hiring process all over again and some bridges will be burnt. Dashlane sucks. It’s the absolute worst password manager ever. Not a day goes by when it tries to log me into a site incorrectly, forgets a password, freezes up, etc. Yesterday I attempted to very carefully change the master password and it locked me out with the new password. Had to reset using the revoke process and it sent me back 6 months in time. Now I have to reconstruct all my logins a day before I go on vacation. I’m stuck with it because my employer reviewed LastPass and decided Dashlane had a few features LastPass didn’t that they really need. Seriously, SCREW DASHLANE!!2

I just finished a few interviews with a very interesting company in another country and the recruiter says they are offering max 66k.
Problem is, it's in a high tax country (Sweden) . So that 66k means take home pay of 3600... That's a 9% pay cut over what I will make starting next month.
Now I'm not sure how to approach this. I calculated what I want (10-15% raise over my current - next month's - salary and the number is *way* higher: 90k.. This means take home 4600 (15% increase)
I also calculated what it would take to match my employer and even that is much higher at 77k.
The recruiter asked me what they would need to offer me for me to accept and says max budget is 66k. This is of course after I told him 66k would net me less than I make now...
There's also the possibility of working remotely (as a contractor I am guessing) from where I am, and I think in that case the 66k would net me roughly the same as my employer, but I'm not sure as there might be additional costs.
But being a contractor means the employer doesn't pay any tax contributions for me, right? I calculated they would be paying 22k tax (on top of 66k salary) which as I understand is freed up. If that's the case maybe I should be asking for more (as contractor)?
How do I approach this? Anyone been in a similar situation?16 -

And so, if I put 60 technical skills on my resume, my employer is going to sit there with their hands in their hair and be utterly confused (which has happened to me a few times before). They're going to have no idea what it is exactly that I'm capable of..
I'm not exactly surprised because in my English Business Skills course in college they also said in regards to quality: K.I.S: Keep It Simple.
Stick to a maximum of 6 skills and that's it..

My current employer is service based. Its a good work culture and everything, But..
They are not evaluating their employees skills and stuff. They assign roles of employee on the basis of their business needs, which is fine at certain extend.
But this ultimately causing some employees (including me) to Not have the role we have expertise in.

Started learning salesforce 1 month back. Felt somewhat manageable.
Got the repository on Monday. Its a fucking spaghetti. A billion different conventions all around the place, no comments anywhere (except for 1% maybe 5 of the places where it needs to be), and for some reason the Checkpoint sync wont work with this project (although it works if I use a scratch or or trailhead playgrounds).
I am starting to think about unlearning this and try some new department of the company. Problem is, the employer is great at Salesforce himself, and he has high hopes from me.7 -

So I'm not sure what I should learn next. Developers love vue more than react. But I prefer to work remotely and I lost the count of how many job ads require React js experience. Every employer wants react. Would you still suggest to learn vuejs despite this? Right now I know javascript and I abuse jquery (front end developer here)2

A maps behemoth created by a single dev (↑). It took "only" 2 years to get a halfway proper version out. Said dev could have saved half of the time if he (well, his employer) bought the control from a company that has all their devs working on just that (.NET controls) and thus the dev wouldn't have had to reinvent the wheel with the very basic control of the map service provider.9 -
The fact that I can hear my work provide MBP 13" through my bose QC35's means that my current employer cheaped out on hardware end of story!!1

You now hear your employer is purchasing 40% in said company to outsource 'certain' projects too (off shore developers). You don't really rate this developers skills AND the work so far from this outsourced group has been sub par. How does this make you feel? What issues do you perceive? Am i right to feel concerned?5

So, I've been with my current employer four years now, three and a half of which have been spent working as a time material developer for a huge fashion company. I've been trying to get out of It for the past six months only for my exit to be postponed everytime. There's also no clear idea as to what I would be moved to, going forward. Nobody Is telling me a thing and I think other developers will be moved to different projects before I do.
That's why I took matters into my own hands and started getting back into the recruitement process. I'm about to receive an offer. A fairly better one.
The thing is, I wanna use such offer to see if my current employer can reedem himself and propose to me a good counter offer. I'm not in the mood of starting over, but I want security and management to have a fucking idea of what my future Is gonna be like at this fucking company.

Why avoid? Maybe it's part of the experience. Lets you appreciate a good company even more.
(That said my first employer was a bit.. twisted. Small, workaholic family, hands on. Lots of pressure. Probably drove some into depression or burn out. Learnt a ton though, and maybe made me a bit more thick-skinned) -
Just wasted one hour on an employer info session. Can't understand why people ask stupid questions like "how is the work life balance?". Like those chosen representatives would tell the truth. Can't understand why those new grads working at the company would want to perpetuate the stupid interview process. "We want to hear how much you resent us while doing stupid white broad interview questions." Do they stream leetcode solving process to TikTok all day for work?

Last employer -- a major health care insurance carrier -- had over a million current and former subscribers data in SQL database with no encryption on SSN or other personally identifiable information. I reported this as an issue, and was told that since they had intrusion detection, etc. they don't need to encrypt the data. Guess they have never heard of zero day vulnerabilities or disgruntled employees?

What is the best way to use/implement metronics theme?
My employer has a project that I am on and so far metronics -- what I gathered to be easy to use front end etc has really just made developing in the frontend feel like walking around in mud. Am I missing something? -
So........ My employer want me and another senior to complete 2 mobile applications on Qualcomm's CSRMESH both in Android (Java) and iOS (must use objective-c) to complete in 3 months time with 198 complex functionality. Some of them are hidden features(employer want us to find out our self) (this app is from Hong Kong)
The problem is , the library is shit and the sample code is messy. CSR still use Grade 2.1.1 for the project. Boss want us a new UI for the app, I should not code it but design it first in figma, because boss keep changing things from second to second.8 -

Requested my data from my old employer sent a link to a sharepoint folder can't download in batch lots of files in _allerrors.txt. How can I do this, internet suggests powershell but commandlets require admin on sharepoint business side and I only have a personal account.
Nearly 16k files to download.

First
When he walked up on the one guy he was likely trying to turn the tables so the guy would taze him
Second on arriving and determining he was drunk I'd have determined how drunk
The guard might have been able to say the approach was mildly threatening
They did ask where he came from and how he got here which wouldn't matter if they didn't test his level of intoxication
Additionally he has no id
And he doesn't speak English very well
That would have resulted in me demanding records from his supposed employer
Basically a bit more digging to ensure this wasn't an imm issue
He is asking the correct questions and they did call in an interpreter
So. Overall.
However I wouldn't have let a bystander sit back down until I moved him further away and I would not have turned my back on a perp
He didn't do anything confrontational to the cops so it's not unheard of to cut him a break but I'd follow up with the employer to make sure he isn't an illegal and didn't have any pending warrants or a history of drunken behavior or probation or parole
Apparently not that great of an interpreter and suddenly he speaks better English lmao3 -
Today I visited my ex-employer's company website and then checked what is new and what is still same. I was chatbot developer. Then after some hours one colleague(he also left there) told me that our old employer called him and was angry about what did we do. That friend is fullstack dev and I don't know much about those stuffs too. But while surfing the website, I tried to use their platform but couldn't because it didn't give me any resoonse.
So either the employer is dumb, or fullstack dev did something f*kstack and it is broken by just clicking 'login as guest' and receiving nothing. What do you think? -
