So apparently I got added to a Python dev group by a random person.
I thought okay cool I might learn new things and connect with some great people in the industry.
Turned out that it was just a bunch of noobs.
When I gave an honest response to a question asked by the admin (who turned out to be a noob as well), he kicked me out.
I honestly don't know if there's any official certification for Python other that the one I said.3 -
So one day on tech huddle my tech lead got frustrated, don't know why and told me - "the tasks you're doing can be done by interns"
I felt bad. Ofcourse I was putting my 100%.
That day I decided to put the resignation. I didn't discussed with anyone about it and sent the resignation email directly.
After serving 2 months of notice period I was able to land a better job successfully!
I called the lead on the last working day in that company and shared him the news about my offer letter and a little about the company.
His first question was - "Did you cleared all the interview process?"
In my mind - "That's only why I'm sharing the news here with you man! Stop thinking of me as a noob."
I replied with - "yes, if needed/the new company try to get feedback about me then please be honest atleast there by keeping your ego aside."
You shouldn't pull someone's leg if you aren't able to climb higher!!
Lesson I learnt;
DON'T STAY AT A PLACE WHERE THERE'S NO VALUE OF YOUR WORK AND THE DEDICATION TOWARDS IT!
Working in a startup isn't that easy, mostly for those where there's no work life balance.2 -
Set up a server, code for hours using node and Mongo trying to realize your dream. FINALLY complete it after a lOOOng time of blood and sweat..
Then find out that a Noob who didn't know the first letter of web programming used FireBase and did what you did in a fraction of the time
I think I've reached the point where I can question what I've done, my purpose in life and.. As for my confidence I think it successfully descended during my last visit to the bathroom3 -
I might have got my first freelancing gig. It sounds like a really simple thing, might just take one hour or so.
So comes the eternal question from the freelancing noob: how much should I charge?
I'm thinking approximately the hourly pay I get from my full-time job. Does that make sense? Even though it might just take one hour?1 -
Go to fucking hell SO!
Question: "How to do X?"
Answer: "You can solve your particular problem without doing X."
God fucking damnit, yeah some noob tried to use X to solve a completely unrelated problem and thank god somebody pointed out a better solution. But since all other questions about doing X are labelled as duplicates of this question, could you dickheads at least provide an actual answer to the question instead of an answer which only works for that particular problem and has nothing to do with X?3 -
First rant here, and it's going to be a query to the more professional and experienced members of society (most of you).
I am currently a Sys Admin for a major company, and I develop at night. My primary employment at the moment is the sys admin job (and I code for extra money at nights).
I wanted to start a development department at the company that I am working at, but it was turned turned down. It was stated that we are not branching in development, and that we should stick to our server implementation and support. This was a prompt to me wanting to start studying officially (I wanted to get qualified in JAVA, so that I had some paper behind my name when I looked for another job). HR and my directors outright denied me the ability to study through them (they pay for studies for employees) and I was more than fine with this.
I took a loan and paid for the studies myself. Can't crush a dream, you know?
The director caught wind of me studying, and now has demanded that I develop him a mobile application for the company. I told him that I am not a mobile developer, and that it didn't fall into my key performance areas.
Note, I do my coding on own time, on my own device, and never at work. It's fully my intellectual property. It also in no way interferes with my work during the day, and has NO conflict with my contract this side.
He sent an email yesterday, this is after two months. He is now stating that I WILL do the application, and he has CCd HR and two directors.
I don't want to do the app for this company, I spoke to HR previously about this, and she said that I should try and quote it under my own company name (which I did, but it was denied as it was "too expensive").
Now I am being forced to do something that is COMPLETELY out of my roles and responsibilities, something that this company has ABSOLUTELY no desire to go into further on, and he is basically letting me know that if I don't do it, he is going to start messing with my pay.
I really don't want to do this, and I cannot afford to make my secondary job my primary at the moment. The problem is, too, that I don't have the time during the day to develop AND do my sys admin tasks (I manage more than 300 servers, and 5000 devices).
What can I do in this instance? Or what would you guys recommend, in your experience?
Sorry for the noob question, but I don't know what to do.19 -
Hi all
Recently bought a new mac. I am new to osx any tips from seasoned power users will be welcome
I am coming from Linux16 -
Noob question here, I see that every single iOS developer around here is shitting on Xcode, but then I saw this today on my way to download PHPStorm. Anyone tested it? Thoughts?7
-
Hello there fellow developers, I've a noob question to ask you.
I saw a software logo a few days ago on a tech talk. I haven't been able to figure out what it belongs to.
A red fish and it's sort of curved in a manner that its head and tail are close. I know it represents some open source software. Can anyone help?
Google search is not helping.14 -
So looking to get started on c++ but have a noob question.
Is there a difference between c++ in Linux vs Visual Studio C++...
kinda don't want to install a Linux OS/cygwin to do it, takes too much space13 -
Question: What do you mean that you have a bachelor in computer science from college? What do you mean college?
Answer by me: Are you fucking stupid or something???? Give a fucking code test and I will saw you what college means... Little piece of shit!!!! And next time when you are searching for PHP developer do not ask for site development with WordPress experience you fucking noob!!!!4 -
[serious] I'm a Windows guy. Been so my whole life. devRant community, I'd like to start playing around with Linux. As someone who has never done that before, where should I start? We're talking total noob. Thanks in advance.8

!rant,
please bare with me :)
What is the difference between having a VPS with OpenVPN and connecting to it and between registering for a VPN provider?10 -
I wanted to update my previous rant in the comment but what happened is such a fucking nonsense I think it deserves its own.
For those who don't want to look what it is, just another C++ noob (aka me) complaining about how the language was a bitch to him by throwing a random SEGFAULT on release while it didn't show up on debug. Welp.
Half an hour and a ton of std::cout later (thought I would try to read a disassembly ? Think again) I figured out what was the problematic section of code. And guess what ? It was a section I didn't even modify and I never had problems with. Something completely unrelated to what I was rightly imagining causing the issue.
To identify which exact subsection was throwing the error to my face I added more tag code.
Rubbing my hands and ready to fix the fuck out of this damn shit, I built it, launched it…
And all of a sudden the code worked.
All I did. Was to add more cout to know which line fucked up. And now it works.
So. Serious question now: is it a clear sign from heaven I should stop working with such languages and should go back in my shitty high level languages kindergarten ?10 -
I did it today...
It wasn't easy, and I'm scared that the consequences may out weigh the rewards, but it was worth the risk.
I posted a question on stackoverflow.
Sorry to sound super dramatic, but the last time I posted to that site I was noob at coding and the responses I got actually made me generally feel bad for asking questions and I can see why people stop coding after they visited it.
Anyway wish me luck and hopefully someone can see what I'm doing wrong or if it's a bug in React Native.
Also I swear to God, if some motherf*cker marks my question as duplicate I will... prove them wrong because I looked all over google like a starving polar bear looking for food in the arctic tundra and found nothing of substance. So I dare you.1 -
Question to all JS Frontend Devs: What light and performant library can you recommend me today?
I'm a C++ dev who is a bit anxious about performance, load times etc. and before I stuck my nose into vanilla js, maybe there is something better/faster. I'm a total frontend noob, e.g. I heard that html tables aren't a thing anymore and that I should use divs?
My task is quite simple, I want to give the users the ability to press some buttons and drag and drop stuff around instead of modifying the URL per hand :/
So if someone could point me in the right direction, that would be awesome!16 -
Hello, Hi! Friendly neighbourhood noob here!
What’s he stuck on today you ask? React and Firebase!
Did he try? Yes he did! Only a little hitch this time.
Really? Little?
...It’s all relative... like the truth!
Anyway PLEASE someone look at my StackOverflow question!!
https://stackoverflow.com/questions...
Firebase and react are awesome tbh. But I cant figure this out!
Thank you!! -
I'm about to graduate and I have no idea what I'm doing. I tried learning the basics and even went through a lot of extra stuff. I can only say I dabbled in scripting, web scraping and a little bit of software development. However when I compare myself to my peers, I feel so out of place. I can't confidently say I know even the concepts I practiced. I am really interested in the field but I feel like I'm way behind and this is constantly nagging me. Is this normal or is there anything I can do about it?3

Very noob question. I started using git/github for my classes in Python, but I dont see why is it any better than google drive or onedrive, since you can also send multiple archives and have it synced to your computer without having to "push". Why is it so popular and needed?10

Noob question
I’m trying to deploy my front end web app (my personal website) to GitHub pages.
In my app, I used react environment variables to store a api key I need in my app.
When I deploy my app with GitHub pages, will the app still be able to access the react env variables?
Let me know if that doesn’t make sense. Thanks!7 -
Html and CSS and Noob
hey guys
trying to do something, search my ass off and can't find it.
So, I have a e page to access tables (another html file)
you can check It at rjpf.ddns.net .
I have a menu, with links to a iFrame, but that is not a good solution for cellphones.
I want to click the button and insert the html inside the main Div , instead of using frames.
how can I do that ?
so>
click the link(CSS button),
opens another page in the div
when I click another button opens another html file in the same DIV
tht way instead of a frame that is had to scroll It would be a single page, easy to paged own in cellphones.
Have another question but this oné must be taken care of first.
Thanks in adance11 -
Noob question
Is it better to implement a cryptpgraphic algo in a function or in a class? Also how?
More info:
I have a cryptography class and I really enjoy implementing the different techniques that we study in class. At first I was just implementing the techniques in a simple function with 3 parameters; key, message and a bool for encryption or decryption. But as they are getting more complex, it is becoming harder to continue implementing them in a single function block. So I thought of using a class but ran into the problem of how do I even do that? Do I make different methods for key generation, encrypting and decrypting?
P.S. It's really just for learning how the crypto technique works and not for anything serious.12 -
Maybe noob question here, but what's the added value of using graph db like neo4js compared to regular RDBMS like PostgreSQL ? I see our beloved devrant uses neo4js so I am wondering if it's worth spending some time digging into this, just that (ok, actually it would be too cool to also have dfox and trogus appear in comments notifications)5

Am I missing any steps?do i need to do something in my embedded tomcat server?13 -
for fellow Data Scientists/Analysts..
I was wondering...which is the longest maintained time series data of all time? i am just learning about trends, seasonality , etc in a time series, and wondered if the pattern still exists in fairly large data, like for 100 years or 100,000 days or if our present forcasting models like arma/ arima would cover them -
So I have noticed if I think I know much of logic in programming and I can solve this problem better way I actually code better.
And when I think no I'm just a noob programmer I ask stupid question to myself and get my self confidence blown.
Thing is don't think you are bad, think of just you'll put all the experience all the knowledge you got in this program (according to its requirement) -
PHP Devs quick question,
I have a project using PleskPHP5 (or that's the processor I found in config)
I'm a bit familiar with Laravel though I'm not sure, are they different? How to migrate to Laravel?
And the project was developed on Windows and I want to use it on Linux do I need to change anything?
I'm a complete noob in php but I want to learn with that project11 -
When project have errors related to libaraies that I don't fully understand what it does, what is the good habit for more efficient troubleshooting?
Should I read their GitHub documentation and understand the problem on my own first or simply find answer at SO?
And when should I just give up and post an issue? -
What things do you keep in mind when learning a new language, when your main goal is to use it in building projects in a framework?
For eg i am beginning to learn flutter and i am finding a need to learn basic dart things like creating variables, loops, classes, functions, constructors, etc...
What are the most important "language concepts" if you may say it that?1 -
Hi react developers. Noob question, I am making a new (my first) react+redux toolkit+axios website…

Hey, just had a doubt. https://null-byte.wonderhowto.com/ take any website like this one (ideally any type of site with lots of links to other pages or posts). So my doubt is , is there a way to not hardcode all the links in the master page?. Or how exactly do professionals manage such sites?. I tried googling a lot but couldn't find the exact answer i was looking for. It'll be great if u can help me with this. Ik it's a noob question, but still😅8

Okay, i have a question.
I am a real Noob when it comes to Java programming. I am trying to establish a database connection between my program and a sqlite database. I have everything ready:
- The Model
- The View
Now the problem i am having is defining the DBController that establishes the connection. And i have no idea how to start?!
Please help me :(
Love yall3 -
So noob question, is automated web scraping a thing? What would you do if you wanted to grab the same information off similar sites and store it in a table that can be manipulated later? All you would have to do is enter the web site link after you finished coding it. I've used Chrome web scraping extensions but want a more automated solution.10
-
Just a question people. Consider me a noob.
I have worked on php for a project. It's not too advanced or something but I don't get why people hate it so much.
I really need reasons.2 -
Another noob question.
After some searching I was only able to find the total opposite of what I wanted.
Is there a way to always automatically boot into BIOS instead of Windows without having to press any keys?
I've searched through the settings but couldn't find any.
Thanks2 -
Hello, I am doing master in Pharmacy, but I like programming and consider to switch or connect somehow industries. I could write simple scripts and small programmes in Python, but I want to write code with good practice from beginning.
So my question what should I know and put in use, maybe some resources if someone has them or just terms for further search. At this moment I use gitlab for VCS (my commits sucks and my whole usage of Git sucks, but at least I use branches), I am trying to separate control from model (MVC but I guess I do it poorly), also I use keepchangelog rules for changeling, and semantic versioning for versions, PEP8 and Pokemon names for my variables and functions as it helps read code later.7 -
Completely noob question and before you say it, yes I have googled but I'm tired and I just get walls of text.
How do I merge a pull request?
A nice guy has submitted a pull request to my repository on GitHub, how can I merge it??
I tried what I thought was merging but it said that a file is conflicting. I tried deleting the file and it still didn't merge.4 -
Honest question, when would you host your website using something like AWS vs a bare bones server like Digital Ocean.L (Taking into account DevRant itself is hosted on DO)
I'm a noob on this :p2 -
Hy all,
I have a question to those that use nodejs, express.
A while back I've seen a project from a friend of mine and one thing intrigued me.
He was using a route.json file to call from it in his back-end api.
I am a noob still but I would really like to know what was that technique he was using.
I hope my description wasn't to vague.4 -
Probably a super noob question: I have a droplet on DigitalOcean with a website. What is the best to update it, make changes? My idea was to clone the droplet, make the changes and then point my domain to the new ip, but I have to wait for hours for the changes to take place...4
